ALLIANCE, Neb. - The Activities Hall of Fame is organized as a way of maintaining the rich heritage and tradition of the successful activity programs at Alliance High School. The Hall of Fame will serve as a means of recognizing, preserving, and honoring the athletes, performers, coaches, sponsors, directors, contributors and alumni who made significant contributions to activity programs. The Activities Hall of Fame will help maintain the spirit, pride and sense of community, as well as serving as a historical account of the great activity traditions of Alliance High School.

The selection committee meets once a year to vote on new members. &nbsp; In order for nominee to be inducted, the nominee must receive at least a 75 percent majority vote from the selection committee members in attendance.

On September 24 the selection committee met and reviewed 24 outstanding applications. The list currently contains 11 state champions or first team all-state athletes. Seven different nominations received at least one vote from committee members. The new nominations this year made the process extremely difficult for the committee. Finally, three athletes, one performer and one coach were settled on to represent the Class of '25.

Wayne Brown (Coach) - Coaching responsibilities at Alliance included boys’ basketball 1975-1977. Girl's basketball 1977-1981 which was the start up years for girls’ basketball in Nebraska. Boy's golf 1977-2007 with a state title in&nbsp;1979 and a third-place finish in 2001.&nbsp; District titles in 1977 and 1979 with four runners-ups.&nbsp; &nbsp;Western Conference: 1st,&nbsp;1979, 1989, 1999, 1997, 2000.&nbsp; Runner-up six times. Girl's golf 1977-2006. Start up for the girls’ team in Alliance. Girl's golf participated in nine state tournaments.&nbsp; Best finish was 1979, sixth place. One district championship in 1979. Western conference: 1 championship in 1985 and four runners-up finishes. Academic All-State Players; 18 girls and 16 boys. Taught in the middle school math department 1975-76, the high school math department 1976-2007.

Collin Cox - Class of 2015 (Performer) -&nbsp;During his time at Alliance High School, Collin led multiple victories in regional, district and state competitions for vocal and acting performances. Collin secured the Class B State Championship title in One-Acts and was awarded the title for Best Male Performer in 2012. Collin was a finalist and champion in multiple NSAA State Speech competitions for oral interpretation of drama, humorous prose and duet acting from 2012-2015. He participated in numerous extra-curricular activities, from serving as the President of the AHS National Honor Society to starring in lead musical roles, earning multi-year superior ratings in district vocal performance and winning the 2015 Stars of Tomorrow competition with Christa Horn. Collin also participated in a nonprofit show choir group called ‘Rendezvous,’ which was selected to compete in the national FAME show choir competition in Hollywood, California in 2012. After graduating from Alliance High School, Collin went on to earn two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s in public administration from the University of Kansas, where he received a university award in leadership and academic excellence and served as the Vice President for the KU Board of Class Officers. In May 2025, Collin graduated from Florida State University with his Ph.D. in public administration and now serves as an adjunct professor in the Askew School of Public Administration and Policy.

Larry Johnson - Class of 1956 (Athlete) -&nbsp;Larry was named the Top Athlete in 1956. He was active in Football, Basketball, Track and Baseball. He was the co-captain of the basketball team and a member of A-Club. Larry was part of the 1955 State Championship team. He continued his career in the United State Air Force and then Kearney State College. Larry settled into coaching for 40+ years. He volunteered at the Nebraska State Track meet for 46 years!

Brittany Lurz - Class of 2007 (Athlete) -&nbsp;Brittany was a four-year starter and letter winner in Basketball. She was named All-Conference, Academic All-State, Honorable Mention All-State, All-Region, and to the State Tournament team. She played in the State Tournament, Panhandle All-Star game, and the NCA All-Star game. She was also an outstanding softball player earning two letters. She was named All-Conference, Honorable Mention All-Region and All-State. Brittany also lettered in track two years.

Bryan Wilson - Class of 1982 (Athlete) -&nbsp;Bryan was a runner up in the 1981 State Wrestling Tournament and the Champion in the 1982 State Wrestling Tournament. Bryan went on to compete with the Nebraska Contingent Wrestling team where he competed in Mexico and Venezuela. He then wrestled for Northwest College and then Wyoming where he won a WAC Championship in 1986. Bryan eventually returned to Alliance where he spent over 35 years volunteering at various levels of the Alliance Wrestling Program!

The induction ceremony is scheduled for October 17 at 2 p.m. in the PAC of Alliance High School.

Panhandle police activity, Sept. 18 - Sept. 29

KEARNEY, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Kansas man after an incident on Highway 2 in Buffalo County on Friday, Sept. 26.

At approximately 9:30 a.m. Friday, NSP received a report that a motorcycle rider was driving in a reckless manner and had threatened another vehicle with a shotgun. The rider had reportedly pulled the shotgun out of a motorcycle saddlebag and waived it in a threatening manner at another vehicle.

A trooper was able to locate the motorcycle at approximately 9:45 a.m. and observed the motorcycle speeding on Highway-2 near Berwyn, in Custer County. The trooper performed a traffic stop. During the traffic stop, the trooper located the shotgun in the motorcycle saddlebag.

The rider, Kyle Sales, 25-years-old, of Wichita, Kansas, was arrested for terroristic threats, use of firearm to commit a felony and possession of a short shotgun. He was lodged in Custer County Jail.

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State College honored Homecoming royalty during a pep rally Thursday on Elliott Field. Homecoming Queen, nominated by the International Club, was Natali Keni of Kahuku, Hawai’i. Keni is also involved in The Nest and is a member of the CSC Volleyball Team. Homecoming King, nominated by The Nest, is Cort Rummel of Gurley, Nebraska. Rummel is also involved in Intramurals and serves as a student coach for the volleyball team.

The first attendant to the queen was Beta Beta Beta nominee Kiauna Hargens of Parkston, South Dakota. Hargens is also involved in Student Senate, Pre-Vet Club, Residence Life Association, Chemistry Club, Health Professions Club, and Cardinal Key. The first attendant to the king was Beta Beta Beta nominee Liam Blaser of Duncan, Neb. Blaser is involved in the Health Professions Club, Chemistry Club, Blue Key Honor Society, and a member of the CSC football team.

The second attendant to the queen was Revive and Student Senate nominee Tianna Martin of Kearney, Nebraska. Martin is a Justice Studies Peer Mentor, involved in RLA, Cardinal Key, Rural Law Opportunity Program, and the Eagle Mentor Program. The second attendant to the king was Night of Country Swing (NOCS) nominee Levi Van Beek of Crawford, Nebraska. CSC Homecoming Royalty Crowned

ALLIANCE, Neb. - Keep Alliance Beautiful’s financial associate will leave our affiliate Oct. 15 after more than five years here. Chandra Krug’s knowledge of this non-profit and her role in its success belie a title that alludes to dollars and cents on a balance sheet. I will miss her and the expertise she wielded on almost any KAB question.

As recycling coordinator (a more straightforward title) I usually see Chandra at least once a week to drop off reports, receipts and the paperwork dejure. As I descend the well-worn exterior steps and enter the office, in the lower level of the City Municipal Building, I can hear her classic rock/pop on the speaker and often look for her pint-sized pooch, Bella. Conversation covers anything not already relayed by text, such as the latest business call to pick up recycling or a request I may have for supplies or information. Chandra’s positive attitude is always refreshing in a business where we measure volume yet never ‘get ahead’.

Chandra has deep roots here – growing up in Alliance and graduating from Alliance High School. She and husband Keith have two adult children. Dalton, 22, works at Box Butte General Hospital and is attending school to be a registered nurse. Jaiden, 20, is working at Head Start while pursuing a degree in Early Childhood Education. While she did not attend college, Chadra noted that “Every single thing I know I learned from doing. I haven’t had a whole lot of jobs, I stay forever.” She continues to work at 7th Street Dance Studio after 19 years and spent 20 years at Expedient Claims Service, starting there in 1994. So why join a Keep America Beautiful affiliate?

“In May of 2020, Kathy (Worley, executive director) called me one day. Diane was retiring, they asked me to help out and here we are.” Personnel changes also led to resource coordinator duties as part of Chandra’s job description.

As she leaves the duties will be split among two people again. Though what Chandra does fills four and a half pages (as categorized for her successors) she mentioned a number of highlights. “Lots of spreadsheets, all the grants, I pay the bills, get payroll ready for the accountant to do, in-kind spreadsheets . . . balance the ledger. I didn’t realize how much I’m doing until I started teaching it,” she explained. Chandra also posts this column to our Facebook page, keeps track of recycling volumes, takes phone calls, checks multiple email accounts and just about anything to “make sure everything keeps running,” she said. “There’s a lot more to it. You wouldn’t believe how much you have to do . . . One person can’t do it – it takes a team, kind of mindblowing. You have to have a good relationship with the grant places. You have to know how to talk to people.”

Among her favorite aspects of the job, Chandra said that she loves running the numbers and making sure everything balances as well as seeing when grants are awarded. Accounting for “in kind” was challenging to learn. She also learned a lot about spreadsheets, a skill she values and plans to implement in the future.

“The people that come and go, the people who stay,” was a memorable part of her time at KAB. Also, “It made me feel good I was able to do both (KAB and 7th Street Dance Studio). Both were challenging but in different ways. At 7th Street I put the program together and help with the little ones. KAB is much more financial numbers.”

Most of the time Chandra mans the office herself though she shared a few memories: (Former recycling coordinator) G.O. used to come up to the office with his muddy boots and I had to make a giant sign for him to wipe his boots before he walked on the carpet so I didn’t have to scrub it. I always liked the people I worked with. Also, some days were a little bit rough and on those days Kathy always brought me flowers to make me feel better. I got audited one time from NET . . . and I ended up passing with flying colors.

Kathy reflected on Chandra’s role at KAB. “It’s entirely rare to have an employee like Chandra, she possesses all of the best qualities for her job as financial associate. Truly dependable, she knows the Keep Alliance Beautiful mission thoroughly. At the risk of sounding cliche, Chandra is dedicated, hardworking, honest and great at what she does; which is to keep us all good at what we do. We ultimately depend on her to let us know where we are in the budget, as to whether or not we can add another employee, buy a necessary piece of equipment, or take a couple of days off.

“In fact, Chandra is so good at her job, NDEE (now DWEE) uses her formula for teaching its grant recipients how to submit their quarterly reports. That’s really good!!”

The letter reads in part: “The submitted change in Section 019.0FA would have removed specific regulatory language describing what constitutes inappropriate physical contact and paved the way for patrons to explicitly, physically touch agents or employees of licenses. In other words, the Commission (through its prior composition) has proposed that I approve a rule change that would effectively provide government permission for customers to touch the dancers at a strip club. I will not.”

Nebraska Recognizes Access to Recovery Resources This September

“A new interchange between the existing Highway 370 and Highway 31 interchanges on I-80 will address gridlock, improve safety, and support economic development in the state’s largest metro area,” NDOT Director Vicki Kramer said. “This investment increases access to Nebraska’s main economic corridor, potentially attracting new growth while also alleviating existing safety concerns due to congestion.

“Under Gov. Jim Pillen’s leadership, NDOT is finding innovative ways to responsibly invest in critical infrastructure that enables growth. While we’ve been planning for this for some time, today marks a formal commitment to the location as we push for an accelerated delivery timeline of this important project.”

The location of the new interchange was informed through the process of a Planning and Environment Linkages (PEL) study by the Omaha-Council Bluffs Metropolitan Area Planning Agency, conducted in coordination with Sarpy County and the cities of Gretna, Papillion, and Springfield. The PEL study examined existing infrastructure, traffic patterns, projected growth, and environmental and community impacts within the area.

With the announcement of the selected location, NDOT is formally moving the project to the next steps of development, which includes completing environmental reviews as part of the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) process and progressing with early design. NDOT has already begun coordination with the Federal Highway Administration through the process of an Interstate Access Justification Report. This required document will explain NDOT’s proposed access changes to I-80, as well as its plans to ensure safety and operational efficiency.

“The proposed new I-80 interchange in Sarpy County is more than an infrastructure project — it is an investment in connectivity that brings Nebraska closer together,” said Heath Mello, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. “This interchange will strengthen our position as a hub for interstate commerce, making it easier for goods, services, and people to move across our region and beyond.”

Mello, a member of the Nebraska State Highway Commission, added that strategic infrastructure investments are critical to ensure that Nebraska remains competitive. The new interchange will help alleviate traffic congestion in the Omaha metro area, which recently saw its population surpass one million, according to U.S. Census estimates. Sarpy County is one of Nebraska’s fastest-growing areas.

LINCOLN, Neb. — The state of Nebraska has extended health alerts for Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs), also known as toxic blue-green algae, at Cub Creek Lake in Jefferson County and Rockford Lake in Gage County.

Iron Horse Trail Lake in Pawnee County has been removed from health alert.

Samples taken earlier this week at the lakes on alert measure above the threshold of eight parts per billion (ppb) of total microcystin, which is a toxin released by certain strains of blue-green algae.

When a health alert is issued, signs are posted to advise the public to use caution, and designated swimming beaches are closed during the alert. Recreational boating and fishing are permitted, but the public is advised to use caution and avoid exposure to the water, particularly by avoiding any activity that could lead to swallowing the water. Do not let pets get in the water or drink from the lake. People can still use the public areas for camping, picnics, and other outdoor activities.

Weekly sampling has been conducted at 56 public lake sites since the first week of May. The lakes will continue to be monitored weekly through the end of September. Health Alert Extended for Cub Creek Lake and Rockford Lake

KEARNEY, Neb. — The Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA) presents its newest exhibition,&nbsp;Cindy Weil: Only Wool, opening October 9 in the rotating exhibition gallery on the second floor. The exhibition brings together sculptures by Omaha-based artist Cindy Weil for her first solo museum show, celebrating the versatility of wool as a medium for soft sculpture.

Transformation is ingrained in Weil's artistic process. She often engages the concept of liminality expressed as a state of transition, change, and letting go.&nbsp;Cumulus&nbsp;(2024) depicts rounded masses of raw wool on the verge of expanding, bursting open or dispersing.&nbsp;Shape Shifting&nbsp;(2025) is one of her clearest references to liminality with its unmistakable fluidity of form—strands of raw wool, fleece and silk provide a visual transition of light and dark. Her art can produce fleeting sensations or a sense of dreamlike serenity. Fundamentally, liminality is present in her techniques and discipline. Wool is malleable yet unpredictable. It is a transformative practice to build sculptures from such an unconventional raw material.

Weil's history as an artist and relationship with wool are communicated through the material of each sculpture. For most of the sculptures in the exhibition, she sourced her wool and fleece from a farm in Ashland, Nebraska, sheared from sheep she met in person. Through her intentional choice of local material, her art is inextricably connected to the state where she was raised.

"I source wool from all over the world. Different wools behave differently in the felting process, so I use the most appropriate wool for the effect I am trying to achieve," Weil said.

With&nbsp;Crutches&nbsp;(2025), she modeled raw Icelandic fleece into a remarkably ethereal yet grounded sculpture. Three vertical 'crutches' are constructed from felted wool, standing exactly six feet tall. She collected the wool in 2019, when she completed her residency at the Icelandic Textile Center in Blönduós, Iceland.&nbsp;

That Time I Moved Home&nbsp;(2024) captures the familiar yet unfamiliar feelings of a homecoming. Strictly manipulated strips of wool are starkly contrasted by the earthy tones of the sculpture, reminiscent of golden fields or yellowed stalks. Weil reflects on the transitional experience of returning to a place that has changed over time. She moved back to Omaha, Nebraska in 2021 after spending 25 years in other cities.&nbsp;

To create the works featured in&nbsp;Only Wool, Weil colored the wool by hand.&nbsp;Musicfield&nbsp;(2024) shows how she can meticulously dye raw wool to resemble stones, almost indistinguishable from the real stones in the sculpture. In a piece like&nbsp;Badlands 2&nbsp;(2023), she departs from reality in exchange for somewhere far more surreal. She occasionally applies acid dye on the wool to achieve specific colors and effects.&nbsp;Stomach Ache&nbsp;(2025) is acid dyed to produce the muted pinkness of internal organs, the felted wool tightly forming twisted pathways. Through shape and color, she blends the unrecognizable and recognizable, otherworldly yet organic, liminal but still rooted in nature.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Elephant in the Room&nbsp;(2020) is one of the few sculptures in the exhibition built on an armature. Tufts of grayish wool sprout from a conical structure protruding from the gallery wall, calling to mind taxidermied trophy kills. Other sculptures featured in&nbsp;Only Wool&nbsp;include&nbsp;Do Not Touch&nbsp;(2024),&nbsp;Black Box&nbsp;(2021),&nbsp;Cairde Anam&nbsp;(2025), and&nbsp;Salon Wall: Cool Loneliness&nbsp;(2021-2025), which incorporates Icelandic horse hair and specialty alpaca wool.

Weil's sculptures seem to capture a transformation in motion, a carefully considered exploration of color, softness, and depth—an intimate conversation between the viewer, artist, and the wool.

MONA will host an opening reception for museum members and press on October 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Weil will give brief remarks at 6 p.m. MONA will also host a free and public artist talk with Weil in February 2026 to discuss her profound interest in wool and its materiality. NDOT to Host National Seat Check Saturday Event

Contractors at Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford have started demolition of the swimming pool complex to make way for a new aquatic facility.

The new aquatic center — to be built on the same site within the park — will feature a zero-entry outdoor pool, two slides and a splash pad. Fort Robinson-themed elements will include a water-tower dump bucket, a stagecoach-inspired children’s slide, and spray features shaped like horseshoes and longhorn cattle.

Crews also will construct a new bathhouse and shade structures.

The pool improvement project is funded through the Land and Water Conservation Fund with matching dollars from the Nebraska Game and Parks Capital Maintenance Fund and anonymous donors.

The project is expected to be completed in 2026. It builds on other park improvements completed in the past several years, including the Mare Barn and Red Cloud campground expansions, cabin and lodge upgrades, and added experiential opportunities. All are aimed at improving the guest experience at the park that annually sees more than 350,000 visitors.

Fort Robinson’s pool was 46 years old and in need of significant repairs.

Robert C. Mock Named 35th Peru State College President

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;– Today, Governor Jim Pillen announced that Nebraska is one of five states that will be part of a pilot program designed to improve the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, as required through the Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA). &nbsp;Word of the selection came from the US Department of Health and Human Services through its Administration for Children and Families (ACF).

Following a rigorous national review process, ACF determined that Nebraska’s proposal stood out for its strong alignment with federal goals and its innovative approach to reducing dependency and increasing workforce participation.

“Since taking office, from SEBT, to SNAP, to Medicaid, I have insisted that assistance programs be run the Nebraska Way -- to encourage self-sufficiency, independence, and self-worth,” said Gov.&nbsp; Pillen. “Now, thanks to the Trump Administration, we can align the TANF program with Nebraska values to achieve greater results.”

The TANF pilot will last six years. Nebraska will utilize the first year of participation to finalize the pilot design, establish baseline performance data, and negotiate targets, with up to five years to measure performance.

“Nebraska’s selection as a TANF pilot is a testament to Governor Pillen’s leadership and vision to advance innovative approaches to improving employment and family stability outcomes for participants,” said Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) CEO Steve Corsi.

When applying for the TANF pilot, Nebraska placed an emphasis on moving families from dependency to independence by promoting work, personal responsibility, and the development of strong, stable families at the forefront of the Employment First Program. Employment is one of the best ways to help Nebraskans escape government dependence, as it enables individuals to take ownership of their goals, create plans, and provide for themselves and their families.

“The Trump Administration recognizes the best economic program is a job, and Nebraska’s pilot reflects our shared commitment to promote personal responsibility and move families out of poverty,” said Acting Assistant Secretary of ACF Andrew Gradison. “Through the Employment First Program and by integrating TANF with other federal programs such as Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood, Nebraska is strengthening community ties and ensuring families have the support they need to secure good jobs and build lasting self-sufficiency.”

The Nebraska TANF pilot emphasizes employment as the most effective path out of poverty and government dependence. Central program elements will include:

Employment is one of the best ways to help Nebraskans escape government dependence, as it enables individuals to take ownership of their goals, create plans, and provide for themselves and their families.“The Trump Administration recognizes the best economic program is a job, and Nebraska’s pilot reflects our shared commitment to promote personal responsibility and move families out of poverty,” said Acting Assistant Secretary of ACF Andrew Gradison. “Through the Employment First Program and by integrating TANF with other federal programs such as Healthy Marriage and Responsible Fatherhood, Nebraska is strengthening community ties and ensuring families have the support they need to secure good jobs and build lasting self-sufficiency.”The Nebraska TANF pilot emphasizes employment as the most effective path out of poverty and government dependence. Central program elements will include:<ul>
 <li>Career Coaching &amp; Pathways&nbsp;– Participants will receive individualized coaching to identify career goals, set milestones, and gain access to training and employment opportunities.</li><li>Employer Partnerships&nbsp;– The state will collaborate with businesses to align training with workforce needs and connect participants with real job opportunities.</li><li>Education &amp; Training&nbsp;– The program will expand access to vocational training, apprenticeships, internships, on-the-job training, and community college partnerships.</li><li>Supportive Services&nbsp;– Participants will continue to receive help with childcare, transportation, and other supports to ensure barriers do not prevent success.</li><li>Support for Individuals with Physical or Mental Disabilities&nbsp;– Flexibility within the pilot allows participants with physical or mental health challenges to receive tailored support toward meaningful employment so they may become more involved in their community, be more independent, and earn additional income.</li>
 </ul>“Our team is honored to be selected and looks forward to beginning the design and implementation of this important pilot, which will help Nebraska families achieve independence and self-sufficiency,” said Office of Economic Assistance Director Shannon Grotrian. “Under Governor Pillen’s direction, Nebraska will serve as a model and lead the rest of the nation by approaching it the Nebraska Way, just as we did with the SEBT program.”The employment service components of the program will include:<ul>

 </ul>Arizona, Iowa, Ohio and Virginia were also selected for the TANF pilot. Additional information will be available as implementation of the program progresses.
