Columbus, Neb. - Nebraska Public Power District (NPPD) is asking power customers around the state to be wary of scammers demanding payment or your power will be disconnected. These predatory individuals will call and state the customer’s bill must be paid immediately or the power will be shut off and will recommend several methods of payment. Sometimes the scammer’s caller-identification is falsified so it appears to originate from the utility company, a practice known as ‘spoofing’. 

“Scammers continue to be creative and are always looking for an opportunity to take advantage of others,” says NPPD Retail General Manager Pat Hanrahan. 

Keep the following in mind when answering phone calls and always be wary of such scams. NPPD offers the following tips and suggestions:

· We DO NOT ask customers for credit card numbers or demand payment with a pre-paid card.

· We DO NOT go door-to-door demanding payment.

NPPD cautions customers of increased scam activity

The Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports of phone scams.

Some of the scams will show a local number and they will always ask for money. The scams will either say you won money and will have to pay a fee to collect the money. The Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center, managed by NNF&amp;G, will be open on select weekends during July,&nbsp; August, and September.&nbsp;⁠The&nbsp;Hudson-Meng Education and Research Center is home to one of the most important paleo-archeological discoveries in North America.&nbsp;Visitors can tour the bonebed enclosure and discover the mysterious past of the Bison antiquus (extinct bison) that died there.&nbsp;

⁠The Center will be open for visitation from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm:&nbsp;July 15th-16th, July 29th-30th, August 12th-13th, August 26th-27th, and September 2nd-3rd.&nbsp;

The Alliance Arts Council announced today that it has been awarded a grant of $9,634 by the Nebraska Arts Council. This grant will support the Alliance Arts Councils 2022-2023 season of performing, teaching and visual arts events.

Another Fourth of July has come and gone. A comment I frequently hear from my (middle-class) friends is, "Those people have no money. But they spend hundreds of dollars on fireworks. What's that about?"

Yes, that money is gone in a puff of smoke. After a great flash and bang. But for those in poverty, life is all about relationships. For them the celebration is logical.

Look at the way many of us celebrate the Fourth. We get together for the day. We share a lunch, then play games all afternoon. Then we share an evening meal. Watch the city fireworks display, then return to our block to set off our own rockets and fountains.

Is there a better way to show how we value others than to share our time, our food, and our entertainment?

Remember that most people in poverty are controlled by the tyranny of the moment. When they get money, there are so many demands that they can't decide how to spend it. Several bills have to be paid - some past due. Children need food, clothing, school supplies. There may be medical issues or car problems.

For those of us in the middle class, we would make a plan. We'd pay off any bills that are costing us the most in the long run - rent so we don't get evicted, utilities so they don't get shut off, credit card bills because the interest is ridiculously high.

For those in poverty, dealing with tyranny of the moment creates so much stress that they cannot reason this all out. Even though those fireworks give short-term entertainment, it's worth it to relieve that stress. It's worth it to show your children that life isn't all bad, that there are times to celebrate. And it is worth the cost, even if a bill goes unpaid for another month.

The other thing we have to understand is the present vs future conundrum. Those of us in the middle class think about and save for the future. We set aside part of our paychecks to buy a car or a house. We plan for our children to go to college. We choose jobs that have benefits and retirement accounts, and we invest in funds or IRAs so that we can stop working after a certain age and still live comfortably.

Remember tyranny of the moment? People who live in poverty do not plan for the future. It's all they can do to live in the present. There isn't enough money to save. If extra funds do come in, through a work bonus or a tax refund, that money is immediately spent. If this month's bills are paid, then it's time to buy something like a new television to celebrate and to provide that entertainment for the family. Plus, if you don't spend it, you'll feel obligated to give it to that next friend or relative who comes asking for help. After all, you may have been on the receiving end in the past, and you may be again in the future.

Through our poverty trainings, we have learned that people who live in poverty have a different mindset from those who live in middle class. We shouldn't judge when things seem illogical to us. Spending on fireworks, for someone with different values, makes perfect sense.

Poverty In Our Area: Fireworks and poverty 

A-Town Zesto has been an Alliance staple since 1950. It's hard to miss the neon-lit glow of the building in the evening.

A-Town Zesto is located at 711 West 3rd Street.

"It has multiple owners, but we bought it in August of 2018 and opened it in May of 2019," Zesto owner Tearza Mashburn said. "And then COVID happened, so that made things interesting. In 2020, we had supply chain issues, so that made it interesting. But the business has been here and it's just a part of the community. You know, when you think of summertime, you think of the Zesto's and you think of the blue goo [ice cream]. We've had multiple people come and take pictures with the neon [lights] or tell us stories that they came for ice cream when they were little. It's interesting to hear those stories from the people that came when they were younger."

Mashburn said the decision to purchase Zesto was made because of the business history in Alliance.

"Okay, that is tough," Mashburn laughed. "We sell a lot of cheeseburgers and people love our cheeseburgers, but we also have a jalapeno burger where it has jalapenos and onions minced into the meat. And then topped with jalapenos and pepper jack cheese, and your choice of condiments. People that like spicy food, they absolutely love that and order doubles and I don't even know how to get it in their mouth. It's so big. And then we have the house burger, which is flavored with apple wood liquid smoke and topped with onion rings and barbecue sauce."

Mashburn said her favorite thing about the Alliance community is that people help each other out.

"With the Westco fire and stuff, we closed our business to keep people away from the area," Mashburn said. "You know, with being right next to that gas station and the fertilizer, so we didn't want anybody down here for their safety. And like with supply chain issues, the Eagles works with us to get stuff if we can't. It's just a small town. We're there for each other. And that's what Zesto's has been known as to. So that's what I love about our community."

A-Town Zesto continues burger legacy in Alliance 

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — The chairman of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe has slammed the federal agency that delivers health care to approximately 130,000 Native Americans located in North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Iowa for declining to hire tribal leaders’ choice for an area director. 

Chairman Harold Frazier released a letter to President Joe Biden criticizing the decision for Indian Health Services to re-advertise the Great Plains area director position after tribal leaders had interviewed and recommended a candidate. 

Frazier’s criticism comes as tribal health advocates have pushed for stability in an agency that’s chronically underfunded and struggles to meet the needs of Indian Country.

In Nebraska, we’ve endured more than our fair share of adversity over the past 3+ years.&nbsp; The floods of March 2019 were the most widespread natural disaster in state history.&nbsp; Then, the coronavirus struck our state in March 2020 and continued upending lives throughout 2021.&nbsp; This spring, our state experienced the worst wildfires of the past decade.&nbsp; Meanwhile, families are dealing with the financial pressures of the highest inflation in 40+ years.

Our communities have navigated these successive disasters with inspiring strength, showing the grit and resilience Nebraskans are known for.&nbsp; As a result, we’re in great shape as a state.&nbsp; However, these challenges have taken a toll on the mental health of many of our families, friends, and neighbors.&nbsp; It’s imperative that we look after the mental well-being of our loved ones and provide immediate help to those who need it.

On July 16th, Nebraska is rolling out the new 988 suicide prevention lifeline.&nbsp; It’s patterned after 911 and gives callers a simple, easy-to-remember number to dial for assistance during a mental health crisis.&nbsp;

While it can be hard to start conversations about mental health, talking about mental illness can be lifesaving.&nbsp; It is never too early to seek assistance for mental health concerns—either for yourself or someone you love.&nbsp; Use your eyes, ears, and heart to be alert for signs of mental distress.&nbsp; These can include:

If you suspect someone may be thinking about ending his/her life, it’s okay to ask them about it directly.&nbsp; Starting July 16th, you can also dial 988 if you’re concerned about a loved one who may need crisis support.

Nebraskans calling in to 988 will be in excellent hands. &nbsp;Almost all the calls made to 988 will be answered by Nebraskans working at Boys Town, our state partner in suicide prevention.&nbsp; The Boys Town National Hotline has provided crisis hotline services since 1989 and has been the Nebraska provider for the Suicide Prevention Lifeline since 2005.&nbsp; In 2021, Boys Town handled 8,777 calls from Nebraskans.&nbsp; Their team de-escalated over 97% of callers to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline without requiring external emergency intervention.&nbsp;

The new lifeline number, 988, provides a direct connection to trained, compassionate counselors for anyone experiencing mental distress or thoughts of suicide.&nbsp; Support is available 24/7, and all calls are free and confidential.

Moving to 988 does not mean the previous Suicide Hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255) will go away.&nbsp; After July 16, 2022, both numbers will get callers to the same services.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Nebraska has highly trained, mobile crisis response teams working around the clock throughout the state.&nbsp; These teams will cooperate closely with 988 counselors to follow up on calls made to the Suicide Prevention Lifeline.&nbsp; The mobile crisis teams include clinicians who can conduct home visits or make telehealth connections to assist Nebraskans.

The State has been proactive in ensuring that Nebraskans have access to behavioral health resources. &nbsp;U.S. News and World Report&nbsp;ranks Nebraska fourth in the nation for mental health.&nbsp; And we have a lower suicide rate than any surrounding state.&nbsp; While these stats are encouraging, we know there’s much more we can do.

The availability of 988 is a great addition to the variety of resources we offer at the state for those dealing with mental health issues. &nbsp;We continue to partner with nonprofits, behavioral healthcare providers, and schools to help prevent suicides.&nbsp; Here are some of our primary efforts:

 <li>Earlier this year, the State invested $40 million of ARPA funds to grow our behavioral healthcare capacity.&nbsp; Additionally, the Legislature allocated $60 million for a rural health complex at UNK, which will help expand education for rural healthcare providers.&nbsp; Senators also allocated $5 million for a loan repayment program for individuals who pursue careers as nurses or behavioral health professionals.</li><li>On June 6th, we launched the Governor’s Challenge to Prevent Suicide Among Service Members, Veterans, and their Families.&nbsp;</li><li>The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) was awarded a five-year federal grant in 2018 to build a behavioral health “system of care” to support those battling mental illness in a less restrictive setting.&nbsp; Since its launch, there have been over 1,800 youth crisis response encounters.&nbsp; Of those encounters, 75% successfully resolved the immediate crisis and supported youth and their families in the community without the need to refer them to inpatient care.&nbsp;</li><li>DHHS has collaborated with the Nebraska Department of Education, schools, educational service units, and localized systems of care to create the Behavioral Health Resources for Schools guide.&nbsp; It serves as a mental health toolkit that identifies local protocols for accessing behavioral health services.</li><li>Nearly 30,000 Nebraskans have been trained on Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), a suicide prevention program.&nbsp;</li><li>The State provided Mental Health First Aid training to 943 people last fiscal year.&nbsp; Trainees are equipped with skills to respond to the signs of mental illness and substance use.&nbsp;</li><li>DHHS, in partnership with Boys Town, operates the 24-hour Nebraska Family Helpline (888-866-8660).&nbsp; Since launching in 2010, the Helpline has received more than 68,300 calls.</li>

With summer sizzling, now’s the time to hit Nebraska’s water trails for a chance to cool off.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission features 10 water trails along stretches of the state’s well-known rivers and creeks.&nbsp;For the most part, these water trails — which cover more than 500 miles — are calm and perfect for kayaking, canoeing, tubing or even tanking. Choose a trail or a portion of the trail to suit your interests and skills.

 <li>Calamus River Water Trail:&nbsp;Found in northcentral Nebraska, this river flows gently from its start in the Sandhills to the Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area. It flows even in the hottest and driest summer months because it's fueled by groundwater from the underlying Ogallala Aquifer. The trail can be extremely meandering, with some bends curving nearly 360 degrees. Views of the gently rolling Sandhills dunes are sure to wow travelers. Though the entire trail is 56.6 miles from Nebraska Highway 7, south of Ainsworth, to Calamus Reservoir State Recreation Area, the float can be broken into smaller sections.</li><li>Republican River Water Trail:&nbsp;This southwestern Nebraska water trail, a slow-flowing braided journey, offers the opportunity to see abundant wildlife. The best times to canoe are July and August, when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers releases large quantities of water from Harlan County Lake. The trail is 49 miles from Harlan County Lake Dam to Red Cloud. Hot dry weather or intensive irrigation can affect the water levels, so be sure to check ahead.</li><li>Platte River Water Trail:&nbsp;Drop in at the canoe and kayak launch at Schramm State Recreation Area and float down the Platte River to Louisville SRA — about 4.9 river miles or about one hour of float time. The difficulty of this east Nebraska water trail varies with water level and river flow, and during the summer, the navigable channel will narrow. Except at its lowest levels, the Platte’s flow is gentle, varying from 3 to 5 mph. If you want a bigger challenge, float the whole trail: about 55 miles from North Bend to Louisville SRA where a recently completed boat ramp and canoe access facility is located on the east end of the park, just before the Highway 50 bridge.</li><li>Niobrara River Water Trail:&nbsp;The combination of spectacular scenery and an easy float trip have made the Niobrara River one of the top canoeing rivers in the country, drawing tens of thousands of people each year. In some spots, rock beds form short stretches of fast water, riffles and rapids (clearly marked by the Park Service), but for the most part, the flow is a lazy 2 to 3 mph along this north-central river. From the Cornell Bridge to Norden Bridge is 30.4 miles, but avid canoers and kayakers can do the entire 76-mile Niobrara National Scenic River stretch over multiple days.</li><li>Lower Missouri River Water Trail:&nbsp;Most of this river is wild, appearing much like it did when Lewis and Clark traveled up it in 1804. This river winds back and forth between high banks, and those on the water will see Nebraska’s high, wooded bluffs and gorgeous exposed shale. Keep in mind, the Missouri can be 25-feet deep or more in places, so remember to wear your lifejacket. Drop in at Mulberry Bend Wildlife Management Area and end at Ponca State Park for a day trip over 22 river miles. Or plan a multiday trip along the entire 57-mile segment starting at Nebraska Tailwaters Recreation Area below Gavin’s Point Dam north of Crofton, Nebraska.</li>

LINCOLN, Nebraska – With the swoosh of a pen and eager applause, Gov. Pete Ricketts proclaims July 11-15, 2022, as NRD Week in Nebraska to celebrate Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) 50th anniversary.

“We are proud to celebrate five decades of protecting, conserving and improving Nebraska’s nature resources,” said Dr. Orval Gigstad, Nebraska Association of Resources Districts president. “It’s amazing to see the conservation progress that has been made these last 50 years and NRD directors and staff know the work we do today – planting trees, water management, soil health – will directly impact our future.”

After the devastation of the Dust Bowl, special purpose districts were developed to solve local soil and water-related problems. But the puzzle of overlapping authorities and responsibilities provided confusion at best.

In 1969, Senator Maurice Kremer introduced legislative bill 1357 to combine Nebraska’s 154 special purpose entities into 24 Natural Resources Districts by July 1972. In 1989, The Middle Missouri Tributaries NRD and the Papio NRD merged to become the Papio-Missouri River NRD resulting in today’s 23 Natural Resources Districts.

Today, Nebraska’s unique system of locally controlled, watershed-based conservation is widely admired throughout the nation.

NRDs deliver several state and federal programs including many projects with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE), Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NeDNR) and the University of Nebraska. These partnerships equate into real dollars for Nebraska agriculture and communities.

“Nebraska policymakers had incredible foresight when creating the NRDs realizing that our strength lies in collaboration with partners to champion conservation,” Dr. Gigstad said. “Our partnerships with local, state and federal agencies have helped deliver conservation to millions of acres reducing soil loss and improving water quality and quantity.”

Across the state, Natural Resources Districts construct projects, implement programs and aid landowners in conservation and natural resources management. When necessary, they enact regulations to protect our resources. While all NRDs share the 12 main responsibilities, each district sets its own priorities and develops its own programs to best serve and protect Nebraska’s natural resources. Often the most recognizable NRD responsibilities include groundwater management, flood protection and conservation trees.

Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts are responsible for protecting one of our most precious resources – groundwater. This mean ensuring there is enough for all users and protecting it from pollution.

As the No. 1 irrigated state in the nation, managing Nebraska’s water to ensure there is enough for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes is essential. NRDs work with irrigators to monitor water use, establish groundwater recharge projects, and implement water-wise programs. This is especially important during times of drought.

NRDs have been developing groundwater quality plans since the 1980s, which are an essential part of protecting our water. Addressing groundwater quality issues requires regular data collection and recognizing and planning for changing conditions. Regulatory and taxing authorities allow NRDs to develop locally based incentive and educational programming and to enforce regulations when needed to protect Nebraska’s groundwater today and into the future.

From Gering Valley in the Nebraska Panhandle to Papillion Creek in the Omaha metro, NRDs across the state employ a watershed protection approach. Utilizing floodplain management measures, NRDs design and build dams, levees, dikes, drainage ditches and other structures to keep flood waters from taking lives or damaging crops, buildings and roads.

Flood control projects are developed for multiple purposes and often provide the additional benefit of recreation including activities such as boating, fishing, camping, wildlife viewing and pedestrian trails. Trails are built atop levees and flood-control reservoirs often develop into recreation areas. Habitat areas and wetlands are available for hunters and often preserved for interpretative nature study.

This spring, the NRD Conservation Tree Program planted its 100 millionth tree – that’s approximately 50 trees for each Nebraskan. Annually, the NRD Conservation Tree Program provides hundreds of thousands of low-cost, bulk trees and shrubs for windbreaks, erosion control, wildlife habitat and other conservation purposes. Districts collect orders for trees between November and March, then trees are distributed in April for spring planting.

Natural Resources Districts’ staff and directors will plant the ceremonious 100 millionth tree on the Nebraska Capitol grounds in a public ceremony this fall.

Dr. Gigstad noted that Nebraska’s NRDs will continue to adapt to meet future conservation needs.

“Protecting our precious resources like soil and water is something we can all agree on,” he said. “NRDs are uniquely positioned to help manage our natural resources to protect lives, property and the future of Nebraska’s communities.”

Pete Ricketts proclaims July 11-15, 2022, as NRD Week in Nebraska to celebrate Nebraska’s Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) 50th anniversary.“We are proud to celebrate five decades of protecting, conserving and improving Nebraska’s nature resources,” said Dr. Orval Gigstad, Nebraska Association of Resources Districts president. “It’s amazing to see the conservation progress that has been made these last 50 years and NRD directors and staff know the work we do today – planting trees, water management, soil health – will directly impact our future.”After the devastation of the Dust Bowl, special purpose districts were developed to solve local soil and water-related problems. But the puzzle of overlapping authorities and responsibilities provided confusion at best.In 1969, Senator Maurice Kremer introduced legislative bill 1357 to combine Nebraska’s 154 special purpose entities into 24 Natural Resources Districts by July 1972. In 1989, The Middle Missouri Tributaries NRD and the Papio NRD merged to become the Papio-Missouri River NRD resulting in today’s 23 Natural Resources Districts.Today, Nebraska’s unique system of locally controlled, watershed-based conservation is widely admired throughout the nation.NRDs deliver several state and federal programs including many projects with the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy (NDEE), Nebraska Department of Natural Resources (NeDNR) and the University of Nebraska. These partnerships equate into real dollars for Nebraska agriculture and communities.“Nebraska policymakers had incredible foresight when creating the NRDs realizing that our strength lies in collaboration with partners to champion conservation,” Dr. Gigstad said. “Our partnerships with local, state and federal agencies have helped deliver conservation to millions of acres reducing soil loss and improving water quality and quantity.”Across the state, Natural Resources Districts construct projects, implement programs and aid landowners in conservation and natural resources management. When necessary, they enact regulations to protect our resources. While all NRDs share the 12 main responsibilities, each district sets its own priorities and develops its own programs to best serve and protect Nebraska’s natural resources. Often the most recognizable NRD responsibilities include groundwater management, flood protection and conservation trees.Groundwater ManagementNebraska’s Natural Resources Districts are responsible for protecting one of our most precious resources – groundwater. This mean ensuring there is enough for all users and protecting it from pollution.As the No. 1 irrigated state in the nation, managing Nebraska’s water to ensure there is enough for domestic, industrial and agricultural purposes is essential. NRDs work with irrigators to monitor water use, establish groundwater recharge projects, and implement water-wise programs. This is especially important during times of drought.NRDs have been developing groundwater quality plans since the 1980s, which are an essential part of protecting our water. Addressing groundwater quality issues requires regular data collection and recognizing and planning for changing conditions. Regulatory and taxing authorities allow NRDs to develop locally based incentive and educational programming and to enforce regulations when needed to protect Nebraska’s groundwater today and into the future.Flood ProtectionFrom Gering Valley in the Nebraska Panhandle to Papillion Creek in the Omaha metro, NRDs across the state employ a watershed protection approach. Utilizing floodplain management measures, NRDs design and build dams, levees, dikes, drainage ditches and other structures to keep flood waters from taking lives or damaging crops, buildings and roads.Flood control projects are developed for multiple purposes and often provide the additional benefit of recreation including activities such as boating, fishing, camping, wildlife viewing and pedestrian trails. Trails are built atop levees and flood-control reservoirs often develop into recreation areas. Habitat areas and wetlands are available for hunters and often preserved for interpretative nature study.Conservation Tree ProgramThis spring, the NRD Conservation Tree Program planted its 100 millionth tree – that’s approximately 50 trees for each Nebraskan. Annually, the NRD Conservation Tree Program provides hundreds of thousands of low-cost, bulk trees and shrubs for windbreaks, erosion control, wildlife habitat and other conservation purposes. OMAHA&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is proud to host the 2022 Uniformed Safety Education Officers Workshop (USEOW). The event has brought state troopers from around the country to Omaha this week.

“We are tremendously honored to host our fellow troopers in Nebraska this week to share traffic and public safety ideas that will make each of our states safer,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol.

USEOW began in 1968 with a partnership of the Nebraska State Patrol, Kansas Highway Patrol, and Iowa State Patrol. Since then, it has grown significantly and now draws troopers from across the country to participate.

Throughout the workshop, troopers will demonstrate the traffic and public safety presentations they give in their local communities. Troopers from other participating states are encouraged to adapt those presentations for use in their own state.

“Those are the kind of things that break down barriers,” said Colonel Bolduc. “Having a trooper in uniform, talking to the public, humanizing that badge, and presentation safety education to our communities, that builds trust.”

Governor Pete Ricketts, Colonel John Bolduc, Kansas Highway Patrol Colonel Herman Jones, and Iowa State Patrol Major Mark Stine each spoke during today’s opening ceremonies, which also featured Omaha Police Department Pipes and Drums. NSP Hosts National Traffic Safety Education Workshop

The Tailgate Bar and Grill is located in the heart of downtown Crawford at 303 2nd Street.

Mandy Horn has owned the restaurant for about two-and-a-half-years.

"I bought it the year of COVID, which was kind of chaos," Horn said. "I had worked here for several years, just a couple of nights a week off and on. So I kind of already knew the place pretty well. And before I bought it, I actually started kind of managing it for the owner who had it at that time. We ended up deciding to buy it and we got it February 1, 2020...everything was great. And by March 15, we were shut down to ten people. And April 1 we were closed except for carry-out only until May. So it's kind of a crazy start."

Despite COVID restrictions, they offer some of the best burgers in the Panhandle.

"A lot of people go for the swiss mushroom burger," Horn said. And it's just our 1/3 pound hamburger with swiss cheese and mushrooms melted on it. And then we also have a bonfire burger that people really like and that's with pepper jack cheese and jalapenos. They're all pretty good and a lot of people like our patty melts too."

Horn said what she likes best about the Crawford community is that "everybody's kind of like a big family here."

"We all know each other and whether we all get along 100% of time, it doesn't matter," Horn said. "You know, if somebody needs something, everybody's usually right there to help. And it's kind of like one giant family here."

This run has grown the estimated jackpot for the Tuesday, July 12 drawing to $440 million or $247.8 million with the cash option selected.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in October 2018 when one winner in South Carolina won a $1.537 billion jackpot.

Tuesday's Mega Millions jackpot climbs to $440 million

The 2022 North Platte Community College raffle car, a 1985 Oldsmobile Cutlass 442, will make an appearance in Ogallala next week.

The Cutlass will be on display at the A&amp;W Restaurant, 1103 W. First St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 22. Tickets will be available for purchase at that time.

The Oldsmobile is the 17th raffle vehicle produced by NPCC’s Transportation Division. It was restored by students in the Automotive Technology and Auto Body Technology programs.

The original interior and rear end of the Cutlass were maintained.&nbsp;The Automotive students put in a L33 aluminum block engine, which was introduced in 2005 as the “high performance” 5.3L engine.

They also installed a 4L65-E heavy-duty automatic transmission - designed to harness performance engines on the street and strip.

Additionally, the Automotive students were responsible for a Kilduff Lightning Rod Shifter, a swap harness from Johnson’s Rodz, tubular upper control arms and 2-inch drop spindles, a custom camshaft and performance tune and tire clearance of the chassis.

<a>Auto Body students added a custom hood and a rear trunk spoiler, painted the vehicle its original gray and silver color and repainted the pinstripes on the sides.</a>

The Oldsmobile will tour the state throughout the summer, making appearances at car shows, parades and cruise night events. A detailed schedule is posted at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.mpcc.edu/academics/programs/classic-car-raffle.php" target="_blank">mpcc.edu/academics/programs/classic-car-raffle.php</a>.

A total of 10,000 raffle tickets will be offered at a cost of $10 each. Proceeds will be used for scholarships for students in the college’s transportation programs and to help offset the cost of producing the next raffle car project.

A number of businesses, organizations and individuals have offered to sell tickets. In North Platte, those include: Don’s Motor Company, Cohagen Battery Store, Levander’s Body Shop, Grandma’s Memories Antiques and Collectibles, Isabelle’s Auction House, A.J. Janas, Pat Smith, Jody’s Auto Sales and LKQ Corporation.

The Yellow Rose Lounge and Herrick Auto and Marine, in Curtis; Top Notch Auto and Towing and Moe’s Graphics, in Gothenburg; Kent Silvester, in Imperial, Neil Noel, in Beaver City, and Duncan Upholstery, in Cairo will also have tickets.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Additionally, tickets will be available everywhere the car is displayed and at the welcome centers of MPCC campuses in McCook, North Platte, Broken Bow, Imperial, Ogallala and Valentine.

The drawing for the Oldsmobile will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 10 during the annual Colonel Cody’s Cruise Show and Shine in Memorial Park.&nbsp;

North Platte Community College raffle car to visit Ogallala

PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — Proposed changes in veterans’ healthcare facilities in South Dakota and elsewhere are on hold for now.

Some U.S. senators, including South Dakota’s Mike Rounds and John Thune, have agreed to dismantle a commission tasked by the Department of Veterans Affairs to carry out closures, downsizing and other significant changes to medical facilities.

That means the VA Hospital in Hot Springs will remain open.

“That would have closed, not just facilities here at Hot Springs. It would have significantly reduced facilities in Sturgis. It would have shut down, in Wagner, South Dakota, the clinic there. it would have taken out the emergency room in Sioux Falls,” Rounds said.

The commission was considering moving VA medical services from Hot Springs to Rapid City. Those programs include inpatient and outpatient care, nursing home and rehabilitation services.

The senators are choosing not to confirm appointees to the commission. Rounds says that means the commission will expire and not have enough time to review recommendations,&nbsp;<a href="https://listen.sdpb.org/2022-06-27/us-senators-cancel-commission-looking-to-realign-va-close-hot-springs-facility" target="_blank">South Dakota Public Broadcasting</a>&nbsp;reported.
