GRAND ISLAND, NEB.&nbsp; — One of the most notable times of year in Nebraska is underway: Construction season. Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol are adding emphasis around work zones to keep construction crews and motorists safe during the summer months.

“The crews working on road projects during the summer months deserve safety on the job,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “As they work to improve our roadways, troopers will be on patrol to keep crews and motorists safe, by monitoring for unsafe driving in and around construction zones.”

In Troop C, based in Grand Island, troopers will be performing localized efforts thanks in part to a grant for $41,300 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office. Troop C’s effort runs through September 30.

“When driving in or near a construction zone, focusing on the road is imperative,” said Captain Jeff Roby, Commander of Troop C. “The choice to put the phone down could be a life-saving decision for one of the many professionals working on these construction projects.”

Street work continues in Alliance

Break a rack and avoid those gobble holes!

With more than a century behind it, one Crawford building has received a facelift and is home to a new business that encourages kids and adults alike to put down their phones and enjoy simpler forms of entertainment.

The Brick House Emporium opened in April in what has long been known as Old City Hall at 209 Elm St. in Crawford. Owner Nina Anderson has fond memories of spending time at The Chief in Crawford when she was growing up, settling into high-backed booths, playing pool or pinball and listening to music on the jukebox.

“We’d just set there for hours. Adults and kids hung out there all the time. I wanted to give Crawford a place like that back,” she said.

Anderson’s career took her away from Crawford as an adult, though she returned to the area in 2002 to take a position in Scottsbluff before later moving to Kansas City. After 30 years with the Federal Aviation Administration, Anderson retired in 2019 and returned to Crawford, where her three sisters and son, Ian, who graduated from Crawford High School while she was stationed in Scottsbluff, still lived.

The Northwest Nebraska community has tried to support a youth center in the past, but never quite succeeded, she said. Anderson, along with her son and Brittany Horan, set out to open a business that would provide a safe place for kids to hang out but also be a fun, relaxed, alcohol-free environment for people of all ages.

“It’s just something Crawford needed,” Nina Anderson said.

The trio looked at a few buildings before settling on Old City Hall.

“We figured it had more potential,” said Ian Anderson, noting that in addition to the business, his mother also lives in the upper story of the building.

Constructed in 1914 for $12,800, the western half of Old City Hall was home to the city government offices, while the Crawford Fire Department occupied the east half from 1915 until the 1960s when it moved across the street. The Crawford Public Library also called the building home, moving into the second floor in 1965 for 20 years.

The fire department’s electric siren was installed in the building’s cupola in 1930, replacing the original 1891 bell and the 1907 steam whistle.

“The siren is still up there because it was too heavy to take down,” Nina Anderson said. The city’s abandoned jail cells still reside in the basement, as well. The building more recently has been home to an antique mall and a café.

With more than two years of sweat equity, the Andersons and Horan are proud to add the Brick House Emporium to the Old City Hall’s history. Pool tables and pinball games, including a Lethal Weapon game they completely rebuilt, offer hours of entertainment while the jukebox plays in the background. Popcorn, snacks, and smoothies keep hunger at bay, and on Mondays Horan, a Scottsbluff native who has worked in delis and bakeries in the Panhandle, prepares and serves homestyle meals from 11 a.m. until the food runs out. She also offers specialty cupcakes every Wednesday.

Though they haven’t been open long, Ian Anderson said it’s been amazing to see the community’s reaction.

“The community has been very supportive,” Nina Anderson said.

The building still needs additional renovation, including Anderson’s living quarters, but when the group looks back over the last two years, they realize just how much they’ve accomplished.

While that old siren is still there, it’s now been enclosed so birds and bats can’t do any further damage. The building has been rewired and the power upgraded, and new windows, insulation and HVAC were installed. The roof on the small side of the building was redone, and one bathroom was converted into two. A kitchen with cabinets by a local craftsman was constructed so Horan can whip up her weekly specials, and in the main room of the business, they painstakingly hand-painted the wall to match the brick wallboard in the kitchen.

Once the structure was sound, they began decorating, choosing steam punk as their theme, Ian Anderson said, pointing out things like gear boxes for light switches.

“I love steam punk décor,” Nina Anderson said.

In addition to the pool and arcade games, the Brick House Emporium is working with local artists to offer their crafts, jewelry and tie-dye. The variety of offerings and the possibilities they hope to explore in the future led them to the business’ name, Ian Anderson said.

“The definition of an emporium is all inclusive, and that’s the idea,” he said.

The Brick House Emporium is currently open 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Monday; 2-8 p.m. Tuesday; 7 a.m. – 5 p.m. Wednesday; and 8 a.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday – Saturday. It is closed Sunday to the public but is available for private parties.

Shoot stick, play pinball at Brick House Emporium in Crawford

On May 31 at approximately 2:05 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department, Scottsbluff Fire Department and Valley Ambulance were called to a two- vehicle rollover accident at the intersection of Highway 26 and 14th Avenue.

A northbound 2004 Suzuki Grand Vitara failed to yield the right of way to a westbound 2014 Dodge Ram pickup.

"The resulting collision caused the Dodge pickup to roll onto its side while striking a light pole," Scottsbluff Police Sergeant Cody R. Enlow said. "The two occupants of the Dodge pickup were extricated from the vehicle by Scottsbluff Fire Department and transported to Regional West Medical Center by Valley Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries."

The 16-year-old male driving the Suzuki was issued a citation for failure to yield to a motor vehicle. 

Both vehicles had to be towed from the scene.&nbsp;

The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Public Power District assisted with the accident.&nbsp;

The campaign has recruited over 150 paid volunteer circulators who are traveling the state to help collect, and a team of over 600 volunteers have also ramped up their efforts. In addition to the overall signature requirement of 87,000 valid signatures on each of the two petitions, ballot initiatives must also qualify at least 38 of the 93 Nebraska counties. Currently the campaign has a combined total of 80,000 signatures across their two petitions.

“Over the last two weeks, Nebraskans have made it clear that they absolutely support this issue. They want to sign our petition to put medical cannabis on the ballot, and they have stepped up to help us do just that,” said State Senator Anna Wishart.

Crista Eggers, mom to 7-year-old Colton, and Statewide Campaign Coordinator said, “We need Nebraska to continue to rise up as they have these past two weeks. We cannot stop and we can’t slow down. Go sign the petitions, apply to be a volunteer or paid circulator, and donate if you are able. This can be done.”

Neb. medical marijuana group qualifies over 15 counties, doubles signature count

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Rapid City law enforcement officials say police shot and wounded a woman after she tried to run over an officer following a failed traffic stop and chase.

 Rapid City Police Chief Don Hedrick says the incident began about 4 a.m. Tuesday after officers unsuccessfully attempted to pull over the silver Mitsubishi sedan for an unspecified equipment violation. 

Police tried several tactics to stop the vehicle, the last of which involved an attempt to block it with a squad car. 

Hedrick says the woman than drove in the direction of an officer, who fired several rounds at the car. 

The woman is being treated for several gunshot wounds.

Bridges Out of Poverty uses the lens of economic class and provides concrete tools and strategies for a community to alleviate poverty. Are you interested in learning more about Bridges Out of Poverty, but you don't really have the time to attend day-long workshops? Please join us for dinner and a conversation with Bridges Out of Poverty national facilitator Jim Ott on Wednesday evening, June 8, at West Side Events Center, 2472 County Road 62, Alliance.

Social hour begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner served beginning at 6:00 p.m. Dinner will be Pulled Pork, Potato Salad, and Fruit Salad, for $12.00. Conversation with our guest speaker will follow dinner. Jim will give a brief overview of the Bridges programs and highlight how we as community members can work together to address poverty locally. On Thursday, June 9, 2022, the Alliance Poverty Task Force will be hosting the national program Bridges Out of Poverty: Community Lens. People from throughout the Panhandle will be hosted at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center. The program is open to anyone, but is especially valuable for government officials, service agencies, school personnel, law enforcement, church leaders, businesses, and other community leaders. Registration is at panhandlepartnership.com/events, and the fee is $45.00.

The Bridges out of Poverty work was begun about 25 years ago by Dr. Ruby Payne, a school administrator who wanted to provide tools to educators who were dealing with children living in poverty. These tools were designed to help the teachers understand a survival environment and provide strategies to improve both learning and discipline. Dr. Payne formed a company called aha! Process, which offers a number of programs and books aimed to equip educators and leaders who want to tackle poverty in our schools and communities. Publications and training have expanded beyond education, and the aha! Process offers programs and publications for business, health and healthcare, criminal justice, faith-based efforts, first responders, postsecondary education, trauma-informed care, and workforce development.

Jim Ott has been a national consultant with aha! Process since 2010. He has been a school psychologist with the Mississippi Bend Area Education Service Agency out of Bettendorf, Iowa, since 1984, serving a variety of schools in rural Jackson County, Iowa, for his entire career. Jim is the co-founder of the City of Dubuque’s Circles Initiative, which is applying Bridges Out of Poverty Concepts at the community level through workshops, trainings, and Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World groups. Jim also presents Emotional Poverty workshops.

Bridges programs open our eyes to the challenges of poverty and equip us with the resources to cultivate sustainable success rather than providing more handouts to the poor. We can improve the lives of so many in our area.

Poverty In Our Area: Bridges Out of Poverty dinner and conversation

CHADRON – The Upward Bound TRiO grant at Chadron State College has been renewed for five years for nearly $1.5 million, an increase from the last five-year grant cycle, according to Upward Bound Director Heather Barry. Barry, who is starting her third year, said the program will be required to serve 63 students compared to 60 high school students in Chadron, Crawford, and Alliance.

According to Barry, this is the fourth renewal of the federal grant program that started at CSC in 1964 before it lost funding. The program was reinstated in 2007 and has been funded continually since then.

Upward Bound operates during the school year, as well as during the summer. The program employs two academic advisers, Kevin Coy, who serves Chadron and Alliance, and Brad Gaston, who serves Crawford.

“They are in the schools on a daily basis helping students with academics, ACT prep, financial aid, tutoring, building class schedules, and career goals and assessments. Anything that will help prepare them for their future,” Barry said.

During the school year, the students and advisers take a fall trip and a spring trip to visit college campuses in eastern Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, and South Dakota. The program also conducts quarterly meetings which have included Upward Bound students participating in community service projects such as The Big Event and assisting with Friends of Pets fundraisers.&nbsp;

“Sometimes we do some financial aid workshops and others on related topics to give them more skills and knowledge for their future,” Barry said.

The four-week summer program offers about 25 high school students the opportunity to experience what college is like including life in the residence halls with a roommate, college-like classes, eating in the cafeteria, and afternoon activities. Students who graduated from high school in May can also take part in the Summer Bridge Program to help prepare them for college this fall.

“I've seen several students join our camp as incoming freshmen when they won't step outside their comfort zones.&nbsp;However, as they continue to be a part of our program, they gain more confidence in themselves and come out of their shells,” Barry said. “It warms my heart to see how much they grow, change, and build relationships with students from other schools as they figure out who they want to be.”

The June agenda is full of educational and recreational activities. The students will take a backstage tour at the Post Playhouse at Fort Robinson and see the Sound of Music.&nbsp;

David Kiem, a CSC alumnus and science teacher at Crawford High School, will teach students how to use 3D printers, and work with drones and robot kits.&nbsp;Recent CSC graduate Isna Patel from India will teach a Hindi language class, and two guest chefs will visit the cooking class taught by Gaston.

“The students always look forward to the cooking class.&nbsp;It teaches them necessary, hands-on skills for when they are out of school and on their own,” Barry said.

Four winners of the essay contest in the English course taught by Kelly Cooper McLendon, an English teacher at Crawford High School, will travel to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with Barry and other staff later this year.

An additional aspect of the Summer Upward Bound program is the opportunity for upperclassmen to complete paid internships in lieu of afternoon activities.

Barry said one student did an internship as a pilot program last year. This year, Riley Ambrose will intern with Jim Gardner at an accounting firm, Trinity Bannon is interning with Kara Benavidez who does equine therapy, Aisha Corral will intern with Courtney Kouba, and Ty Brady is interning with Laure Sinn, both at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center.

“I'm excited for these four to get hands-on experience, to see what it's like to have a real job, and gain behind-the-scenes knowledge,” Barry said. “I want to keep growing and expanding the internship program. Eventually, I'd like to see every junior and senior in our summer program have an internship opportunity. That'll help them grow and prepare for their future.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

This year, at the end of the summer program, the group will travel to Yellowstone National Park and participate in activities such as whitewater rafting and horseback riding.

Omaha – After a 2021 postponement due to the Covid 19 virus, the Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) is back for its 40th year in 2022.

 This touring event offers bicyclists the opportunity to take part in a week-long bike ride celebrating our state’s scenic beauty. BRAN is a 501c3 non-profit organization that provides scholarships to Nebraska high school seniors from the overnight host communities to attend Nebraska trade schools, colleges, universities and other secondary opportunities.

The theme of this year’s BRAN is “NEBRASKA --- BEST BY BICYCLE” which will provide the opportunity to ride on paved highway shoulders on Highway 2 of the Sandhills Journey Scenic Byway through the scenic sandhills of central Nebraska – a top 10 scenic route in the US. The ride will start in Alliance on Sunday, June 5 and overnight in Hyannis, Thedford, Callaway, Ord, St. Edward, Shelby and ends in Wahoo on Saturday, June 11. This year’s BRAN will again have 3 and 4 day options to ride as well as the traditional 7 day tour.

While we do provide scholarships, our ultimate goal is to offer bicyclists a safe and fun ride each year. BRAN awards scholarships to students selected from the host communities’ schools with the only qualifier that those students attend a Nebraska school or other educational opportunity.

The cost of the tour is $350 for the week or $200 for the 4 day and $150 for the 3 day tour; registration increases after April 15, 2022. Included in the fee are transportation of all gear during the week, stationary and mobile support on the road including water and refreshments, hot showers, coffee in the morning, a commemorative t-shirt and water bottle and the opportunity to ride with fellow cyclists who enjoy taking the full day and stopping to enjoy what Nebraska has to offer. Bus rides to the beginning town of Alliance is an additional charge. Registration should be done on-line at BRAN-Inc.org. There are no paid employees and BRAN is run completely by volunteers who use personal time to work for the week for the benefit of the riders.

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol removed from the road 20 impaired drivers during Memorial Day Weekend. Troopers also assisted 226 motorists in need of help throughout the state.

The annual&nbsp;Click It or Ticket&nbsp;national mobilization continues through this week. Troopers will continue working overtime as part of that effort to maintain a safe start to the summer driving season.

“Summer will be full of vacations and holiday celebrations,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “If those events involve alcohol, plan ahead to have a sober driver. And no matter how far your travels take you, always wear a seat belt.”

In addition to the 20 arrests for driving under the influence, troopers also issued citations for speeding (292), open alcohol container (14), minor in possession of alcohol (14), driving under suspension (26), no proof of insurance (18), no seat belt (5), and improper child restraint (7).

Troopers in Troop D also participated in a localized enforcement operation focused on impaired driving around recreation areas. Troopers made seven DUI arrests as part of that effort this weekend. The Troop D campaign was made possible thanks in part to a grant for $10,030 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation -Highway Safety Office.

On May 29 first responders from many agencies responded to Lake Minatare.

The Scotts Bluff County Communications Center received two calls that sounded like different circumstances.

The first call, at 3:36 p.m., reported “a 16-year-old male came here and advised he was hit by a tree and is hurting pretty bad...advised he was hit in the chest," said Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman.&nbsp;

Sixteen minutes later, a Game and Parks officer on scene said that the subject was alert and responsive...and responders could drop their emergency response.

The second call, at 3:37 p.m., reported “a 911 call with a female screaming, barely able to understand...heard terms, 'water is too strong…I’m getting…by the water'…help," said Overman.&nbsp;

The communications center made multiple unsuccessful attempts to call the party back.

"Eventually, law enforcement determined that both calls involved the same individual," Overman said. "The individual was transported to Regional West Medical Center by private parties. Law enforcement spoke with the parties involved and determined that the incident was accidental and did not involve any serious injuries."

Memorial Day weekend marked the unofficial start of summer and a dangerous time of year for young drivers. Nationwide, more than 30 percent of deaths involving teen drivers occur during what’s called the “100 Deadliest Days” - a period that runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.&nbsp;

For every mile driven, new teen drivers (ages 16-17 years old) are three times more likely to be involved in a deadly crash compared to adults.&nbsp;Now that school is out for summer, these inexperienced teen drivers will have more time to spend on the road. That means more time driving at night and potentially engaging in risky behaviors like speeding, texting, or simply sharing the vehicle with teen passengers. The risk gets even greater when you add more vehicles on the road.

“This summer could prove to be even more dangerous for teen drivers as the 100 Deadliest Days coincides with what is expected to be a busier summer driving season than last year,” said Brian Ortner,&nbsp;spokesman for AAA – The Auto Club Group. “AAA expects two years’ worth of pent up travel demand&nbsp;to increase&nbsp;in the coming months. That means more traffic on our roadways, which raises the crash risk – particularly for young, inexperienced drivers.”

Teens should also learn how to adjust their speed based on roadway factors like reduced traction and visibility and varying traffic volumes.</li><li>Distracted driving.&nbsp;&nbsp;Teen passengers are the biggest distraction to teen drivers, but cell phones come in second.&nbsp;Many teens admit to interacting with their phone and in-car infotainment systems while behind the wheel despite clear dangers. Make a family rule covering these and other distractions that everyone abides by.</li><li>Drowsy driving.&nbsp;Teens have a hard time getting enough sleep and often struggle with drowsiness. Drowsy driving is as dangerous as drunk driving, and teens have the highest risk.&nbsp;Ensure everyone who is behind the wheel has gotten enough sleep.</li><li>Impaired driving.&nbsp;Driving impaired from alcohol and other drugs puts everyone at risk.&nbsp;Enforce strict zero tolerance rules with your teen and be a good role model.</li>

AAA: 100 deadliest days for teen drivers has begun

It’s not just my opinion that we have a kid-friendly state. &nbsp;Nebraska has received national recognition for our children’s well-being.&nbsp; Our work to improve child welfare was recognized with the Jim Casey Building Communities of Hope Award in January 2020.&nbsp; In 2021, Nebraska ranked #7 out of 50 states for child well-being according to the Casey Foundation. &nbsp;Compared to the national average, kids in Nebraska are more likely to be proficient in reading and math, more likely to be physically fit, and more likely to enjoy economic well-being.

While a great place to work and raise a family, Nebraska also has a wonderful quality of life.&nbsp; We have some of the best turkey, water fowl, and deer hunting anywhere in America.&nbsp; With nearly 80,000 miles of rivers and streams, Nebraskans have abundant opportunities to fish. &nbsp;The sandy beaches of Lake McConaughy and the Calamus Reservoir are attractive destinations to soak up the sun or take a swim.&nbsp; This year, we passed major legislation to enhance water recreation in Nebraska.&nbsp; We’re constructing a new marina at Lake McConaughy, significantly expanding the marina at Lewis and Clark Lake, and creating a 3,600-acre reservoir between Lincoln and Omaha.

Nebraska also boasts one of the best college sports scenes in the nation. &nbsp;Omaha is home to the College World Series, will have the NCAA volleyball Final Four in 2022, and regularly hosts the Olympic Swim Trials.&nbsp; Nebraska Cornhuskers, Creighton Bluejays, UNK Lopers, and Omaha Mavericks athletics are all big draws. &nbsp;

With these abundant options for recreation and entertainment, it’s no wonder Nebraska ranks as the #6 state in the nation for work-life balance.&nbsp; In fact, SmartAsset lists both Lincoln and Omaha among the top ten cities in America for work-life balance.&nbsp; While Nebraskans work hard, we prioritize spending time with our family and friends. &nbsp;We enjoy the Good Life together—at county fairs, small town festivals, holiday parades, church picnics, and backyard barbecues.

For example, Burlington Capital and Invest Nebraska announced a partnership in September to raise $11 million in seed funds for ag tech innovators.&nbsp; Companies in Nebraska brought in more venture capital in 2021 than in any previous year.&nbsp;In addition to having abundant career opportunities, Nebraska is a great place to raise a family.&nbsp; There’s a reason why we have the fourth-highest birth rate in the nation. &nbsp;We have good schools, excellent entertainment for kids such as our world-class zoos and children’s museums, and safe and supportive communities.&nbsp;It’s not just my opinion that we have a kid-friendly state. &nbsp;Nebraska has received national recognition for our children’s well-being.&nbsp; Our work to improve child welfare was recognized with the Jim Casey Building Communities of Hope Award in January 2020.&nbsp; In 2021, Nebraska ranked #7 out of 50 states for child well-being according to the Casey Foundation. &nbsp;Compared to the national average, kids in Nebraska are more likely to be proficient in reading and math, more likely to be physically fit, and more likely to enjoy economic well-being.While a great place to work and raise a family, Nebraska also has a wonderful quality of life.&nbsp; We have some of the best turkey, water fowl, and deer hunting anywhere in America.&nbsp; With nearly 80,000 miles of rivers and streams, Nebraskans have abundant opportunities to fish. &nbsp;The sandy beaches of Lake McConaughy and the Calamus Reservoir are attractive destinations to soak up the sun or take a swim.&nbsp; This year, we passed major legislation to enhance water recreation in Nebraska.&nbsp; We’re constructing a new marina at Lake McConaughy, significantly expanding the marina at Lewis and Clark Lake, and creating a 3,600-acre reservoir between Lincoln and Omaha.Nebraska also boasts one of the best college sports scenes in the nation. &nbsp;Omaha is home to the College World Series, will have the NCAA volleyball Final Four in 2022, and regularly hosts the Olympic Swim Trials.&nbsp; Nebraska Cornhuskers, Creighton Bluejays, UNK Lopers, and Omaha Mavericks athletics are all big draws. &nbsp;With these abundant options for recreation and entertainment, it’s no wonder Nebraska ranks as the #6 state in the nation for work-life balance.&nbsp; In fact, SmartAsset lists both Lincoln and Omaha among the top ten cities in America for work-life balance.&nbsp; While Nebraskans work hard, we prioritize spending time with our family and friends. &nbsp;We enjoy the Good Life together—at county fairs, small town festivals, holiday parades, church picnics, and backyard barbecues.Nebraska has welcoming communities where neighbors are quick to lend a hand.&nbsp; We’ve seen this through floods, wildfires, and a global pandemic.&nbsp; Nebraskans give generously to those in need.&nbsp; We volunteer our time and talents to strengthen our communities.&nbsp; It’s ingrained in us to take care of one another through thick and thin.The pandemic has reinforced the attractiveness of our way of life here in Nebraska.&nbsp; We didn’t shut down our state due to the coronavirus.&nbsp; As a result, Nebraskans were able to continue spending time with loved ones and engaging in their communities. &nbsp;People want and need that social connection.&nbsp; In Nebraska, we made it a priority throughout the pandemic.&nbsp;We’ve also made ongoing investments in public safety in Nebraska.&nbsp; Over the past year, we’ve seen people flee states that have neglected public safety and move to states that respect law and order.&nbsp; Activate Alliance is working to keep all physical activity options accessible for a variety of ages and abilities and is excited to kick off a community bike share program at no charge to users.

Gently used bikes have been tuned-up, painted bright green, and each have a reflective sticker indicating it’s part of the Alliance Community Bike program. They are available at participating locations around the community with additional locations added in the coming weeks:

Committee members have been excited to make this happen, donating countless volunteer hours, and even personally financially donating because they believe in the cause. If you are interested in donating a bike, volunteering to maintain bikes, or being involved in planning, the Activate Alliance committee meets the 3rd&nbsp;Thursday of each month @ 9am.

The committee has been excited to see a number of successes including crosswalk beautification, signage upgrades, walk audits, and various communications. Activate Alliance includes the school, community residents, hospital, city, law enforcement, public transit, senior services, community center, and public health. Their goal is to make Alliance a safer place to walk, bike, and roll and are funded in part through the Box Butte Health Foundation.
