United Way of Western Nebraska to hold 'Color Dash' in Gering

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today announced that 
interest rates will increase for the calendar quarter beginning July 1, 
2022. The rates will be:

Under the Internal Revenue Code, the rate of interest is 
determined on a quarterly basis. For taxpayers other than corporations, 
the overpayment and underpayment rate is the federal short-term rate 
plus three percentage points.

Generally, in the case of a corporation, the underpayment rate is the
 federal short-term rate plus three percentage points, and the 
overpayment rate is the federal short-term rate plus two percentage 
points. The rate for large corporate underpayments is the federal 
short-term rate plus five percentage points. The rate on the portion of a
 corporate overpayment of tax exceeding $10,000 for a taxable period is 
the federal short-term rate plus one-half (0.5) of a percentage point.

The interest rates announced today are computed from the federal 
short-term rate determined during April 2022 to take effect May 1, 2022,
 based on daily compounding.

IRS interest rates increase for the third quarter of 2022

SCOTTSBLUFF -&nbsp;Planning has begun for the 11th annual Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon, scheduled for Sept. 24. The race will again have a full marathon, half marathon, 5K run/walk, and a three-person half-marathon relay.

The Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon is the largest annual fundraiser for the WNCC Foundation which supports students, programs, and facilities at WNCC. Last year the marathon celebrated its 10th year as a premier event in Scotts Bluff County, drawing runners to the area from around the country and as far away as Kenya, Africa. WNCC Foundation Executive Director, Jennifer Reisig, is also Race Director for the marathon.

“Thanks to the generosity of our title sponsor, Platte Valley Companies, our runners, volunteers, and other sponsors, we have raised more than $450,000 in our first ten years," Reisig said. "In 2021 alone, we raised $55,142 to support student scholarships at WNCC. That’s more than any previous year of the Monument Marathon.”

Hod Kosman, President and CEO of Platte Valley Companies, said “We are honored once again to be the title sponsor and to partner with WNCC on this great part of our community that touches lives in so many positive ways. We’re very proud to be part of an organization as good as the Monument Marathon and thankful to the whole crew for expanding ways for individuals to participate throughout the day. The scholarships raised through this race add value to the lives of individuals who then contribute to our community.”

This year, race organizers unveiled a new sponsor level, the Friend of the Monument Marathon. This will replace the Mile Marker sponsor level and give a chance for more people to get involved in supporting the race. The Friend of the Monument Marathon sponsorship can be made in honor or memory of someone, and it includes recognition at Five Rocks Amphitheater on race day, two free race entries, two free tickets to the expo pasta feed on Sept. 23, an option to have a table at the expo, and a pair of Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon socks.

Two local businesses have already signed on to be a Friend of the Monument Marathon, Bellevue University and Gering Valley Plumbing &amp; Heating. Jennifer Schwab is a Monument Marathon runner, volunteer, and the Relationship Manager for Bellevue University.

“For Bellevue University, it’s about fostering and building on our partnership with WNCC," Schwab said. "We see success when WNCC is successful. The amount of money raised by the Monument Marathon to provide WNCC student scholarships is helping students to see educational opportunities that they may not have otherwise. As a long-term resident born and raised in Gering, I know that when WNCC is successful it helps our entire community and Panhandle.”

Julie Thompson helped promote the Monument Marathon in its early years at an expo in Colorado, and she is the HR Manager at Gering Valley Plumbing &amp; Heating.

“Any event that promotes and brings people to our community is something we want to support. Our owner, Bill Schlaepfer, is very involved in the community and easily says yes to events like this. We’re honored to be able to be a sponsor.”

Last year's marathon included 491 registered runners from 29 states. There are already over 150 registered runners for the 2022 race. Two runners who ran last year and are registered to run again in 2022 are Adam and Rachel Harper.

“This will be my fourth Monument Marathon and our second Monument Marathon together. What got us started running together was that our lives got so busy, and our training runs became our time together. I love that this is in our neighborhood. It’s a course that we can practice on and get comfortable with, and the course is amazingly beautiful. I highly recommend this course to anyone who wants to do a half marathon,” said Rachel, a fifth-grade teacher at Northfield Elementary in Gering.

“We started running together because COVID happened," Adam, an attorney who works with Legal Aid of Nebraska, said. "We could focus our efforts, and even our anxiety and stress over what was happening, on running together. Until two years ago we never had a desire to run more than four miles.”

This year the couple has a goal of running a sub two-hour half marathon. They say the beauty of the course keeps them coming back. They encourage other runners who aren’t sure if they can tackle 13 miles to ease into it over the next few months.

“We’ll build up over the next two months to a base of six miles. In July – September, we find a 10 – 12 week program where we increase miles each week. Saturday is our long run. Two years ago, every Saturday run was the most I’d ever run. For the average citizen, like me, it’s about taking it slow and steady. It’s been rewarding,” Adam said.

If runners aren’t ready this year for 13 miles, the 5K and half marathon relay are great options.

Reisig encouraged community members and longtime runners to step up to sponsor the race and help students at WNCC.

“For our runners who have run the race for years, they may opt to sponsor as a Friend of the Monument Marathon to increase the impact they have," Reisig said. "They know this race and love this race and what it does for our students and community. We were also looking for more ways for community members to connect with our runners. People love hearing the stories of who the runners are, why they came here, and where they came from. The benefit of the tickets to the pasta feed gives a chance for community members to sit down and share a meal with our runners.”

Chadron City Transit has more exciting news to share with the community. After the community public forum last week, we are now moving forward with the PILOT PROGRAM for a second Transit Bus that will be a FIXED/DEVIATED route. This is in ADDITION to the existing DEMAND route the City Transit currently runs.&nbsp; This will be effective June 1st, 2022.

The DEMAND route is Monday - Friday; 8 am - 4 pm. Calls received are dispatched immediately.

Rides to the AIRPORT are by APPOINTMENT between 8 am - 4 pm.

The FIXED/DEVIATED route is Monday - Friday; 10 am - 2pm with designated pickup locations. (i.e. if you are at Walmart and need a ride home, you can catch the bus based on the designated times listed on the schedule. If the DEMAND bus dropped you off at Walmart, you wouldn't have to call for a return ride...just hop on the FIXED route pickup).

This PILOT PROGRAM is to see 1) if a second bus is needed and 2) if the locations and times are suitable which we will adjust accordingly.

Chadron City Transit moves forward with pilot program

GORDON – Ragged Sky Productions is proud to announce the premiere of “Fortress of Sin”, a thriller featuring several native born Nebraskans in the cast and crew.

The film is the brain child of Paul Chomicki, the genre cult film actor from such comedy horrors as Deadly Xmas and Paranormal Halloween. While in Los Angeles, Paul befriended Nebraska filmmaker, Christian Voss. Voss told Chomicki his plans to return home to Nebraska, where films could be make easier while utilizing the vast wealth of local talents.

Frequent collaborator, Dave Campfield, suggested that Nebraska would make the perfect backdrop for Chomicki’s screenplay Fortress of Sin, a story that chronicles one fathers search for his daughter across haunting and powerful backdrops. Prepped with a budget of under $8,000, Voss, Chomicki and Campfield assembled a team that included regional theater director and actor Ryan Lovell. “I received a call from Christian Voss about appearing in a local film, and I jumped at the opportunity.”, said Lovell. “I've always been a stage actor with only one small film role to my credit, so I was looking forward to the opportunity to be in front of a camera again.” Ryan became so instrumental in production, and likewise took on the job as Assistant Director.

The cast also includes Katie Otten from Omaha, who’s body of film work continues to grow. Says Katie “The best part of this entire experience was the friendships that forged from being on screen with others who love it as much as you do. I will cherish that forever.”

Fortress of Sin deals an issue relevant to many of those who live in Nebraska and South Dakota regions, the disappearance of many woman of Native American heritage. “Fortress” hopes to shine some light on the situation. It’s already won several international awards at festivals, including Best Feature Film at the Eastern Europe Film Fest.

Fortress of Sin will be screening June 11 at 7 p.m. at the Gordon Theater. Several of the stars will be in attendance. The film will be released to streaming and DVD later that month by Wild Eye Releasing.

Court: Some rail rate talks allowed in price-fixing suits

CHADRON — As Intralinks nears the completion of their Chadron office, they hired two new employees: Robert Sullivan as a Network Specialist and Grace Sorenson as a Receptionist. Intralinks, which provides services for personal and business computer needs, is opening a new Chadron location at 130 West 3rd Street, open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. They will be having an open house on June 9 from 2-6 p.m. with food, drinks, and a prize wheel, with a ribbon cutting at 5 p.m.

Robert Sullivan, Network Specialist, grew up in Bellflower, California. Robert has also lived in Arizona, Colorado and moved to the northern Nebraska panhandle in 2019. Robert has an AA Degree from Pueblo Community College and Attended Western Governors University for networking and currently holds A+ certification. Robert has many years of technology experience, which includes businesses and schools from desktop support, networking, to being a Director of Technology at a large school district. Robert’s enjoys spending time with his family: wife Lauri, son Patrick and his family, son Michael and his friends, as well as fishing and riding his motorcycle.

Grace Sorenson, Receptionist, grew up in Chadron, Nebraska. She graduated from Chadron High School in 2020 and is now a student at the University of Notre Dame where she is majoring in English and minoring in History. She is home for the summer. In the fall, she will be studying abroad for a semester in London. Grace enjoys spending time with her family and friends, as well as reading.

Nebraskans will enjoy this summer boating on waters across the state. To mark National Safe Boating Week, May 21-27, the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is urging boaters to keep safety the top priority.

Boaters and paddlers should not take safety for granted. Game and Parks suggests ways boaters may reduce the risk of incidents and help ensure a safe and enjoyable day on the water.

Before Launching&nbsp;– Ensure your boat is in good running condition. Get the boat registered and, if a nonresident, purchase an Aquatic Invasive Species sticker on Game and Parks’ website. Let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. Paddlers of kayaks or canoes should physically inspect their planned take-out point to make sure it is accessible.

Wear a Life Jacket&nbsp;– Children under age 13 and anybody on a personal watercraft are required by law to wear a United States Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device. People being towed by a boat on skis, a tube, or other similar device also must wear a life jacket. Every vessel, except sailboards, must carry a flotation device for each person on board.

Be Wary of Surroundings&nbsp;– Look around for other boats, personal watercraft, swimmers, stumps and other hazards. Speeds in excess of 5 mph are prohibited if within 30 yards of any other vessel, swimming area or dock. If padding a kayak or canoe, be aware of possible debris below the surface or under bridges.

Have All Required Safety Equipment&nbsp;– Life jackets, throw cushions, fire extinguishers and bailing devices are required on most boats.

Avoid Alcohol&nbsp;– Boat operators can become impaired with less alcohol than motor vehicle drivers due to heat and dehydration. Boating Under the Influence is a criminal violation and is enforced actively.

Watch the Weather&nbsp;– Storms can pop up quickly in Nebraska. Check the weather in advance and monitor it during the day, if necessary.

Avoid Hypothermia&nbsp;– Even though temperatures are rising, the water still can be cold. Hypothermia is caused by exposure to cold weather or water. Take caution to prevent hypothermia.

Nebraska Game and Parks urges safety while boating

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission has completed stocking over 26 million walleye fry in the North Platte River above the reservoir and upper portion of Lake McConaughy. To help increase survival, most fry were stocked from a boat to distribute them into areas with adequate food resources and fewer predators.

Beginning in mid-June, an additional 1.5 million walleye fingerlings with an average length between 1.25- to 1.5-inches will be stocked. A portion of those walleye fingerlings will be raised and stocked at a larger 2-inch size. Both the fry and fingerling stockings will be evaluated by Game and Parks research crews and University of Nebraska-Kearney fisheries science graduate students to determine stocking success.

Game and Parks is working with the Nebraska Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to design and conduct an angler survey in 2022 and 2023. Anglers will be asked about the number of fish caught at the reservoir, including at night in April and May and during the day between April and October.

This will be a multiyear effort to account for varying lake levels and potential weather effects on stocking and survival rates and will aim to balance the needs and concerns of anglers for successful management of the lake’s resources.

Walleye fry stocking completed at Lake McConaughy

OGALLALA, Neb.-Loud bangs and bright flashes are the highlights of the Independence Day celebration in America. But, the skies in Keith County will be dark and quiet this year.

The Keith County Board of Commissioners announced that fireworks will be prohibited in the entire county this year.

The commissioners said under the advice of area fire departments and the National Weather Service, the decision was made to immediately ban the sale and use of all fireworks.

Commissioners cited drought conditions that would create an "unmanageable atmosphere for fires."

The resolution did not describe penalties for those who violate the fireworks ban.

A couple of weeks ago, the city of Ogallala announced that fireworks would not be allowed in the city limits, causing many to express concerns that residents would discharge fireworks in the country where there is more open land and a greater risk for fires.

Fireworks banned for 2022 in Keith County

On May 17 at approximately 7:50 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department was called to the area of South Street in Terrytown regarding the report of possible a gun shot. 

Scottsbluff police responded to the area and established a perimeter. 

"The reporting party said that they had seen three males running from the area north of South Street near the North Platte River," Scottsbluff Police Captain Lance Kite said. "Two of the males were described as wearing dark clothing and the third as wearing grey clothing."

The area was searched on foot by police for an hour. No suspects or evidence of a firearm being discharged was located. 

"Officers spoke to several citizens along the river that were in the area when the noise was reported," Kite said. "None of the citizens contacted reported hearing a loud noise. Officers then conducted a neighborhood canvas of South Street. No one along South Street reported hearing a loud noise."

The Scottsbluff Police Department was assisted by the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office and the National Park Service Law Enforcement Rangers.

Today marks Officer Aly Konopnicki’s last day being the School Resource Officer.  She has spent the last four years helping at the schools and has made such an impact on so many students.

APD officer Sherlock to take over as School Resource Officer

Last June, following the Bridges Out of Poverty program in Alliance, Educational Service Unit 13 offered a class for teachers to learn how to better deal with children who are experiencing poverty. Since I’m a retired teacher and on the Board of ESU 13, I signed up.

As part of the class, we were each given a copy of Emotional Poverty by Ruby K. Payne, published by the aha!Process, the parent company of Bridges Out of Poverty. The class and the book address the problems teachers face every day when their children cannot control their anger, outbursts, anxiety, even avoidance; in other words, children with emotional poverty. These children feel “less than” or “separate from” others. Schools are now challenged with adding Social and Emotional Learning to their lessons.

A quote from Dr. Payne’s book: “There is an emotional dance that goes on every day in the classroom between the educator and the students. It is a dance between safety and belonging, between relationships and structure, between discipline and learning.”

Dr. Payne’s book covers brain functions and development. She explains what happens when a child has a melt-down and techniques to calm and diffuse the situation. These techniques might include having the child drink a glass of water. Or holding a child’s hand. A teacher might ask a child to look up at the ceiling for several seconds. These simple acts shift the brain away from using the parts of the brain that control emotions and feelings. Of course, there are strategies for behaviors that are more serious. Understanding the reason for the inappropriate behavior is the first step in modifying the behavior.

A great deal of research has been done on child development, both physical and mental. Babies first learn to trust. They learn to process sensory information. They gradually develop autonomy, which includes such things as crawling, walking, toilet training, learning to dress themselves. Around age four they notice more about their environment and become curious. They begin to play with other children (not just beside them). They continue to learn new skills and develop mental, emotional, and social skills at every age. They gradually assert independence until they are finally ready to move into adulthood and take care of themselves.

But what happens when their development isn’t reinforced by their caregivers? They may not develop the emotional resources they need to become happy human beings with a strong inner self. Then they are experiencing emotional poverty.

Sometimes trauma happens to children. Children might be neglected or abused. Maybe a parent died. Or their family was torn apart by an illness, divorce, or a job loss. Then the child might become stuck; their level of mental and emotional development isn’t keeping up with their physical development.

COVID created isolation and barriers we still haven’t completely overcome. Our students lost several months of interaction with their classmates, time normally spent developing those social and emotional skills. Teachers, now more than ever, are dealing with their students’ emotional issues.

In the ESU class we talked about the language barriers that children from poverty households face. They’ve learned to communicate through gestures and reactions, which may not be appropriate in school. They haven’t developed the vocabulary they need for their school work or to communicate what they are thinking or feeling. All of this leads to frustration, and teachers work hard to prevent or contain their behavior problems.

Teachers have always had the responsibility of teaching formal language to their students. This includes reading, vocabulary, grammar, writing skills, and speaking skills. In recent years we added the requirement of financial skills. Our students learn to create budgets, calculate wages, get a loan, buy insurance, make rental agreements, get a mortgage, save money in a variety of investments – skills that will help them create a bridge to a secure financial future. Teachers work on physical, mental, emotional, and creative development. Of course, they also teach lessons in their core subjects.

Ruby Payne and her colleagues continue to research different types of poverty and the resources we need to be successful. Bridges Out of Poverty programs are designed to help professionals and communities develop strategies for dealing with the issues that separate social and economic classes.

GOODLAND, Kan. (AP) — The National Weather Service has confirmed a series of weak tornadoes across rural parts of northwestern Kansas and a county in southwestern Nebraska along the Kansas line. 

The tornadoes hit Tuesday afternoon as a line of storms moved across the Plains.

 National Weather Service meteorologist Ed Holicky out of Goodland, Kansas, says spotters and video confirmed separate tornadoes in Decatur, Norton and Gove counties in Kansas and an one in Red Willow County in Nebraska. 

Holicky says there were no reports of injuries or damage from the tornadoes. 

The system brought gusty winds, heavy rain and some hail, leading to downed tree limbs some roof damage across the region.

'The Bones of Paradise: A Novel Examined' to be held at Alliance library

After serving 40 years as a prosecutor in Nebraska, United States Attorney Jan W. Sharp announced today that he intends to retire at the end of May.&nbsp; Sharp, a native Nebraskan, attended the University of Nebraska College of Law graduating with distinction in 1982.&nbsp; That same year he began his career as a prosecutor serving as a Deputy Lancaster County Attorney in Lincoln. &nbsp;He spent six years in the office handling a variety of criminal cases ranging from white collar crimes to homicide.&nbsp; During his tenure he worked with the newly created Technical Investigations Unit of the Lincoln Police Department on white collar criminal investigations.&nbsp;

In 1988 Sharp joined the United States Attorney’s Office in Omaha where he handled a wide variety of criminal matters including terrorism, violent crime in Indian Country, white collar fraud, political corruption, drug trafficking and civil rights violations.&nbsp; In 2001 Sharp was named Criminal Chief for the United States Attorney’s Office, a position he held for 17 years.&nbsp; In 2018 he was appointed to the position of First Assistant United States Attorney under United States Attorney Joe Kelly.&nbsp; Following Kelly’s resignation in 2021, Sharp was appointed as Acting United States Attorney and later appointed by the United States District Court to serve as Interim United States Attorney, a position he has since held.&nbsp; The United States District Court will appoint Sharp’s successor to take over as Interim United States Attorney following the end of his service until such time as a presidentially appointed, Senate-confirmed U.S. Attorney is named.&nbsp;

Sharp said, “I have been blessed to have worked with so many talented and dedicated attorneys, support staff and law enforcement officers over my 40-year career.&nbsp; I was also fortunate to have practiced in front of Judges who were intelligent, collegial, and completely committed to the honorable performance of their duties.&nbsp; As I leave, I truly believe that during my tenure in the U.S. Attorney’s Office, I held the best job in the legal profession.&nbsp; Working with people dedicated to making our communities safer is a privilege and I leave with the utmost admiration for the professionals who continue to carry out the mission.”

DETROIT (AP) — Nearly 43,000 people were killed on U.S. roads last year. That's the highest number in 16 years as Americans returned to the highways after the pandemic forced many to stay at home.

The Good Life we all enjoy is made possible by the courageous men and women in blue.&nbsp; After traveling the state for the past 7 ½ years as Governor, I know Nebraskans appreciate all that law enforcement does to keep them safe.&nbsp; While other states cut funding for the police, Nebraska is boosting our support for our law enforcement.

As we wrap up National Police Week, I want to recognize all that Nebraska’s law enforcement agencies do for us, 24/7/365.&nbsp;

Everyone knows law enforcement intervenes to stop crime, sometimes in heroic fashion.&nbsp; In March, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call in the middle of the night from a woman being held captive inside a moving vehicle.&nbsp; A county deputy located the vehicle, which fled an attempted traffic stop.&nbsp; A State Trooper aided the response, took lead on the pursuit, and performed a tactical intervention to stop the escaping vehicle.&nbsp; The female passenger was safely removed, and the driver was arrested on charges of false imprisonment and flight to avoid arrest.

Our law enforcement agencies also keep deadly drugs off our streets.&nbsp; This work has become especially important as drugs flow into America across our broken southern border.&nbsp; In 2021, the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) seized triple the amount of cocaine than it did in 2020 and more fentanyl than in 2019 and 2020 combined.&nbsp; While fentanyl is a rapidly growing concern in our state, methamphetamine remains the #1 drug threat in Nebraska.&nbsp; In 2021, 768 pounds of methamphetamines were removed from our streets thanks to law enforcement.&nbsp; They’ve also formed a statewide coalition to help inform citizens about the dangers of meth consumption (<a href="http://www.ago.nebraska.gov/life-or-meth" target="_blank">www.ago.nebraska.gov/life-or-meth</a>).

Additionally, our law enforcement agencies root out human trafficking.&nbsp; In 2021, York County Deputy Taylor Samek made a traffic stop at Petro travel center.&nbsp; The vehicle he pulled over had a missing girl from New Mexico inside.&nbsp; Thanks to his alert policing, this young teen was rescued from being trafficked and safely returned to her family.&nbsp; Just one year prior, in 2020, a sheriff’s deputy in Furnas County interviewed a girl and recognized she was a victim of sex trafficking.&nbsp; He immediately put together a team of state and local law enforcement and prosecutors.&nbsp; After months of investigative work, that team secured a conviction and a 176.5-year sentence for the man selling the 15-year-old victim to local men.&nbsp; Over a dozen of these men are also facing felony charges.&nbsp;

Law enforcement also keeps our children safe at school.&nbsp; On March 14th, Hastings School Resource Officer Emily Ostdiek was monitoring the high school cafeteria when she noticed an unresponsive student experiencing cardiac arrest.&nbsp; She took immediate action, using an automated external defibrillator (AED) to apply a shock as medical responders rushed to the scene.&nbsp; The AED shock given by Officer Ostdiek saved his life.

And law enforcement officers patrol our roadways to keep motorists safe.&nbsp; That’s no small task in a state where there can be tornadoes, dust storms, and blizzards all in a single month.&nbsp; On May 2nd&nbsp;alone, NSP performed 61 motorist assists and made 28 crash responses when a late spring snowstorm hit western Nebraska.

Our men and women in uniform are in a job that demands the highest level of integrity and adherence to the rule of law.&nbsp; They’ve willingly put themselves between danger and their fellow citizens, accepting risks to their lives.&nbsp; These risks have grown in recent years, due to reckless calls to “defund the police.”

This irresponsible rhetoric emboldens criminals to attack law enforcement.&nbsp; The number of assaults on law enforcement officers increased by more than 4,000 from 2019 to 2020.&nbsp; In 2021, 73 of the nation’s law enforcement officers were intentionally killed in the line of duty.&nbsp; That’s a 58% increase from 2020 and the highest number since 1995.&nbsp; While none of these murders took place in Nebraska, we mourn the loss of law enforcement officers across the country.

As we see attacks on police around the country, I want law enforcement in our state to know that Nebraska backs them 100%.&nbsp; This year’s legislative session made this support crystal clear.&nbsp; I signed into law several bills that make critical investments in law enforcement:&nbsp; LB 1014e allocated $47.7 million to expand the Nebraska Law Enforcement Training Center in Grand Island so that agencies in our state can provide new recruits with training that’s second to none; LB 1241e devoted funds to help local law enforcement agencies recruit and retain new officers by offering incentives for years of service; and LB 1273 provides tuition waivers for law enforcement officers and a health insurance tax break to qualifying retired officers.&nbsp; Additionally, we’ve invested $16.9 million to upgrade our State Patrol Crime Laboratory to better process evidence to solve crimes.&nbsp; And we provided pay raises to recruit, retain, and support our Department of Corrections officers, who are important members of our law enforcement community.

Our law enforcement officers sacrifice time away from friends and family to protect the public.&nbsp; They’re working when their fellow citizens are enjoying a holiday.&nbsp; They’re on the job in the middle of the night when most Nebraskans are fast asleep.&nbsp; They miss out on baseball games, dance recitals, or birthday parties while answering the call to serve their communities.&nbsp; These men and women give up a lot to keep us safe, and they deserve our respect and gratitude, long after Police Week has ended.

Severe weather possible for Panhandle today 

Scottsbluff — During this year’s national Click It or Ticket seat belt campaign, which will take place May 23 through June 5, 2022, Scottsbluff Police Department will be teaming up with law enforcement nationwide for a Border to Border (B2B) kickoff event. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is asking all states to participate

in B2B, a one-day, 4-hour national seat belt awareness event on May 23 to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible seat belt enforcement for drivers at

state border checkpoints. Scottsbluff Police will participate by having officers conduct saturation patrols within the City of Scottsbluff.

According to NHTSA, in 2019, there were 9,466 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. In that same year, 55% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign and the B2B kickoff event is nighttime enforcement. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations both day and night. In Nebraska, the penalty for a seat belt violation is $25.00 and you increases your chance of a fatal injury by 45%!

“The Click It or Ticket campaign is important because it raises awareness about seat belt safety during a time when seat belt use is decreased,” said Sgt Philip Eckerberg #121. “With an increased number of cars flooding the roads due to the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, it’s imperative we get the word out about the importance of seat belt safety.”

“In 2021, Nebraska lost 135 community members because they did not buckle their seat belts,” said Bill Kovarik, NDOT Highway Safety Administrator. Over twice as many males were killed in crashes as compared to females, with lower belt use rates, too.

“We aren’t handing out tickets for the thrill of it. If enforcement wakes people up to the dangers of unrestrained driving, we’ll consider our mission to be a success,” said Sgt Eckerberg. “If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please let them know you are counting on them to buckle up. Help us spread this lifesaving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction. Seat belts save lives, and everyone — front seat and back, child and adult— needs to remember to buckle up!”

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is asking all states to participatein B2B, a one-day, 4-hour national seat belt awareness event on May 23 to increase law enforcement participation by coordinating highly visible seat belt enforcement for drivers atstate border checkpoints. Scottsbluff Police will participate by having officers conduct saturation patrols within the City of Scottsbluff.According to NHTSA, in 2019, there were 9,466 unbuckled passenger vehicle occupants killed in crashes in the United States. In that same year, 55% of passenger vehicle occupants killed at night (6 p.m.–5:59 a.m.) were not wearing their seat belts. That’s why one focus of the Click It or Ticket campaign and the B2B kickoff event is nighttime enforcement. Participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt law enforcement, writing citations both day and night. In Nebraska, the penalty for a seat belt violation is $25.00 and you increases your chance of a fatal injury by 45%!“The Click It or Ticket campaign is important because it raises awareness about seat belt safety during a time when seat belt use is decreased,” said Sgt Philip Eckerberg #121. “With an increased number of cars flooding the roads due to the upcoming Memorial Day holiday, it’s imperative we get the word out about the importance of seat belt safety.”“In 2021, Nebraska lost 135 community members because they did not buckle their seat belts,” said Bill Kovarik, NDOT Highway Safety Administrator. Over twice as many males were killed in crashes as compared to females, with lower belt use rates, too.“We aren’t handing out tickets for the thrill of it. If enforcement wakes people up to the dangers of unrestrained driving, we’ll consider our mission to be a success,” said Sgt Eckerberg. “If you know a friend or a family member who does not buckle up when they drive, please let them know you are counting on them to buckle up. Help us spread this lifesaving message before one more friend or family member is killed as a result of this senseless inaction.
