On Friday, April 7 at 7:55 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a reported tractor trailer hauling hay colliding with BNSF locomotive.&nbsp;

The collision happened at&nbsp;County Road 9 and BNSF&nbsp;Rail Crossing 089185H approximately 1/2 mile south of Hwy 26. &nbsp;The crossing includes a Rail Road Crossing sign indicating two tracks. &nbsp;There are&nbsp;no automated arms nor alarms. &nbsp;Both tracks had locomotives&nbsp;on them. &nbsp;The south track had an east bound locomotive,&nbsp;and the north track had a&nbsp;west bound locomotive.&nbsp; Deputies determined that west bound locomotive&nbsp;struck&nbsp;a north bound tractor/trailer driven by Johnny Hill, age 69, of rural Morrill man. 

&nbsp;Hill was transported to Regional West Medical Center by the Morrill Fire Department for non-life threatening&nbsp;injuries and later released.

In addition to the Sheriff’s&nbsp; Office and Morrill Fire Department, responding agencies also included the Nebraska State Patrol and Valley Ambulance

Keith County's 2023 Big Give drive set for June 1 to 15

Spring turkey youth shotgun season opens April 8 and Hunter Nikolai, Nebraska hunter education coordinator with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, reminds hunters to always practice the four basic rules of firearm safety.

Nebraska’s spring turkey archery season opened March 25, and the spring shotgun season opens April 15. All spring turkey seasons close at sunset on May 31.

“Turkey hunting brings excitement and anticipation for many, but never let your emotions get in the way of a safe hunt this spring,” Nikolai said.

“Hunting is one of the safest outdoor recreational activities, thanks in large part to the many volunteer hunter and bowhunter education instructors across Nebraska’s communities,” Nikolai said. “Be sure you’re reviewing these basic safety practices with your friends and family before you hit the field this spring.”

Never make movements to signify your presence.</li><li>When hunting turkeys in the timber, sit against a tree or stump wider than your shoulders and taller than your head.</li><li>Do not wear white, blue or red while turkey hunting, as these colors are displayed by male turkeys in the spring.</li><li>Carry decoys and any harvested birds in a bag when moving or packing in or out of your hunting spot. Wear a blaze orange cap and vest when you’re on the move to increase your visibility to other hunters.</li><li>Check yourself for ticks after a hunt, especially along waistbands and in hair. Permethrin can be used to treat boots, clothing and other hunting gear to help reduce tick exposure.</li>

Hunter education expert: Safe turkey hunting is no accident

The Dead Unicorn Society (DUS) has officially opened in Alliance on Flack Ave. near Dairy Queen. 

Is it a brothel, satanic worship place, swingers club, etc. (all rumors from the infamous Alliance Rumor Mill)? No, not at all. But, it is a new music venue in western Nebraska; a restaurant, a place for all arts, and an antique-boutique shop. 

So, how did this unique place come into reality? 

"The DUS is a collective idea between myself, Darren Jelinek and Derek Johnson (Megan's husband), and everyone who has embraced our vision and helped us build it from the ground up," Megan Johnson said. "So many people are a part of this.  We have infused our individual passions into a single location to give our local community a fully immersive arts experience. First and foremost, we are all involved in musical endeavors including multiple bands (Brucey Pratt and The Strange Love, Shon Townsend Band, Loaded Dice, Kalin Krohe Reference, New Wave Time Machine, Riverfront Boys). Our closest friends are a part of Alliance's music and arts community, and so we wanted to create a venue for all of us to enjoy and a space that is open for the music and arts lovers in Alliance and the surrounding area. Our love for music is also supported by our love for food and drink, as well as the unique and bazaar items that we will have for sale, as well as sharing our private collection of oddities with the community."

It took years and years of blood, sweat and tears for this idea to come into reality for the three business owners. 

"We've spent years dreaming up the idea, and the past three years collecting the items that you'll find here," Megan said "We've spent a lot of time in antique shops, oddities shops, and scouring private collections in person and on the internet."

"Our planning for the Dead Unicorn Society all came to us based off our enjoyments we seek in life," Derek Johnson said. "For as long as we've all known each other, we have adventured and seeked out any and every music venue, art gallery, antique shop, bar. You name it we have come across it. We've [Darren Jelinek and I] rode our motorcycles through all the lower 48 states,  traveled through Canada, Mexico and everywhere in between. Through our adventures we have taken ideas from all our favorite places and conglomerated them into what is now the Dead Unicorn Society."

"The name DUS has many layers of meaning for us, and part of that is reflected in the antiques and oddities that we have on display," Megan said. "We are displaying and utilizing a lot of old, rare items that are being brought back to life and used within the business.  From the 1916 National Cash Register,  to the antique china we'll serve our dinners on, to the late 1800s lamps and stained glass window on display and in use. Unicorns are mythical creatures, rarely seen, but often talked about, and as the talk around town would suggest, we must be unicorns too!  And as far as a dead unicorn goes, I would suggest that a dead unicorn would be even more rare, unicorn beings don't technically even exist. They're beast of legend, and we've all got a personal legend we're living out loud with our voices and our paint brushes, our hands, and our hearts.  For the most part, it's just a unique name for a place that is offering an artistic counter-culture for those in our community who are already immersed in the arts or who are curious about what the counterculture of the arts is all about.  We're here to be ourselves, have fun,  and create a space for self expression for all the other Dead Unicorns in our community." 

Megan went on to say, "That's part of the Dead Unicorn name too, remembering the people who are gone that have influenced our local arts community.   I'd also love to mention musicians such as Rick (Gonzo) Gonzales, Mark Vallejo, Brian Laughler, Mic Gonzales, Peter Brain, Terry Houston, and many more that I haven't named.  They'll all continue to live on because their art and influence does, and they live on in all of the people they touched with their music."  

Panhandle Post asked Megan why the arts are important in a community. 

"The arts themselves create a community, and place of belonging, and our mission is to be welcoming to all who walk through our doors whom are open to enjoying a unique experience," Megan said. "We're not looking for cookie cutter people or those experiences here, we're looking for the unique spark that makes every person an individual."  

You'll find many antiques and educational items inside the DUS.

"I've already named a few of the antique items previously, but one of our most loved items is Hector," Megan said. "Hector is a medical specimen from the University of Omaha who was used to teach medical students about human anatomy for the past 50 years.  He was someone invested in science who willingly donated his body for medical purposes when he passed.  And he will be overseeing our oddities and antique shop for the entire future of the Dead Unicorn Society as a permanent part of our collection. We also have available for sale a collection of antique 1800s era books illustrated by Gustave Doré, including a German Bible, the History of the Crusades, as well as other related items.  These are rare books that you won't see often."

You'll also find great home-cooked food at the DUS. 

"Our menu will be chef's choice daily," Megan said. "You can expect a lot of comfort foods with a unique flair, made from scratch as well as both alcoholic and non alcoholic beverages.  We've also partnered with 719 Brewery to bring you a custom Dead Unicorn Pale Ale available only at the Unicorn itself."

Bands and acts will be performing on a sound system and lighting that is state-of-the-art.

"We are using a suspended overhead sound system to keep the sound spread out and even," Darren said. "There are strategically placed speakers throughout the space using the number 13 with orientation to help induce the brown note. It’s the best!"

"Through all the years of attending live performances and also performing live in bands, Darren and I have payed extra attention to what type of rooms have the best sound, best lighting, arrangement of a room, etc," Derek said. "It all means something. Everything down to the materials used in music venues. The woods, concrete, cloths, it's all very important to the sound in a music venue. We have put together a lighting and sound system that really highlights the dead unicorn. I'm sure everyone will be impressed. All that being said, performer's that come to play here will have the freedom to just perform, be yourself and have fun. We will take care of the rest."

The venue will have a large focus on original music. 

"Music is easily available by just picking up your phone and searching for two seconds. The original music is still rare," Darren said. "You get a feel and a move from it you can never find from any phone and headphones...and if you have ever felt the drive of the amplifiers and the energy of someone playing their own music from their heart you will understand what this is for.   Any thing that is out of the ordinary are what we are hoping to line up.  Music, art, professional thumb wrestling and Mongolian throat singing are just a few."

Megan, Derek and Darren have been artists and musicians for a long time. 

"I've been an artist since I could hold a paintbrush, and have had the pleasure of learning from some of Alliance's greatest, now gone, artistic influences, including Jack Sampson, and Elaine Johnson," Megan said. "I sang in my first band with Mike Boots, Larry Steele, Jim (Spaz) Martinson, Darren and Christy Jelinek in 2001, and then took a hiatus for awhile before getting back on the stage, but regardless, music has always been a passion for me, and we're all very excited to share it with the community of Alliance."

"I've been playing music for 20 years now," Derek said. "There is nothing more fulfilling. Seeing people enjoy original music you have created is a feeling you never can get enough of and we are so happy to be providing a place for people to do that. We hope all alike are as excited as we are."

"Music makes me feel funny things in my tummy," Darren said. "I got my first real drum set on my 14th birthday.  My uncle gave me a 30 second tutorial and off I went. After finding other people to jam with, perform with, there was no going back."

"You get a feel and a move from it you can never find from any phone and headphones...and if you have ever felt the drive of the amplifiers and the energy of someone playing their own music from their heart you will understand what this is for. Any thing that is out of the ordinary are what we are hoping to line up. Music, art, professional thumb wrestling and Mongolian throat singing are just a few."<figure>

"I've been an artist since I could hold a paintbrush, and have had the pleasure of learning from some of Alliance's greatest, now gone, artistic influences, including Jack Sampson, and Elaine Johnson," Megan said. "I sang in my first band with Mike Boots, Larry Steele, Jim (Spaz) Martinson, Darren and Christy Jelinek in 2001, and then took a hiatus for awhile before getting back on the stage, but regardless, music has always been a passion for me, and we're all very excited to share it with the community of Alliance.""I've been playing music for 20 years now," Derek said. "There is nothing more fulfilling. Seeing people enjoy original music you have created is a feeling you never can get enough of and we are so happy to be providing a place for people to do that. We hope all alike are as excited as we are.""Music makes me feel funny things in my tummy," Darren said. "I got my first real drum set on my 14th birthday. My uncle gave me a 30 second tutorial and off I went. After finding other people to jam with, perform with, there was no going back." <figure>

Country Gospel Band to perform at Alliance church 

My road trip this week took us to Rushville, we found a neat little place called the Bunkhouse Bar and Grill. It is a true gem of the sandhills. 

 From the minute we walked in the door, the staff all said hi, we didn't feel like strangers. It was nice to have that greeting with the enthusiasm  that is usually reserved for people you know. 

We set down and Michelle our waitress came over to tell us the lunch specials, and get our drink. We just loved her, awesome gal. My faithful side kick Betty Jo noticed the little chuckwagon salad bar. We both are crazy about them. And were pretty danged excited about it. So, we placed our order and hit the salad bar. Lettuce salad and fixin's along with a potato salad that was awesome, a shell pasta salad, and the best Frito taco salad i ever tasted. Amazing doesn't do it justice. Next came our meal, I had a yummy ribeye and their french fries are so dang good, they look the shape of a wide piece of bacon that's been twisted once.  Their taste was beyond fab. 

Betty Jo had chicken fried steak and said hers was great too.  We of course ate to much, and took some home. And plan to return soon, that salad bar tickled us. Not the biggest, but the tastiest.

 We met one of the new owners Tom Eichenberger on the way out, and told him we had a great meal, and enjoyed our visit. Every person that worked their stopped by the table to see to our drinks, food ok,  can I get you anything else. Or hey stop in again sometime. Friendliest bunch of folks I ever met.&nbsp;

 Enjoy the Sandhills and treat yourself to a great meal. See you there!

Road Trip: Bunkhouse Bar and Grill in Rushville

CHADRON – In the first Graves Lecture of the spring semester, Chadron State College English Lecturer Katelyn Lambert shared a feminist critique of more than 20 Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films she conducted for her award-winning graduate thesis at the University of Nebraska Omaha.

In her presentation, Women in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, from Iron Man to Black Widow, Lambert gave examples of how women characters have been sexualized and objectified in the MCU, a media franchise consisting of various films and television and streaming series based on comics from the 20th Century. The main characters include Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Black Panther, and Doctor Strange.

“I use feminist film theory as the cornerstone to ground my observations. In essence, feminist film theory observes and analyzes women's on-screen portrayal, trying to gain an understanding of their role within a film. Are they protagonists, or do they exist just to bolster male counterparts? Are they a love interest or do they actually serve a purpose beyond just being the girlfriend or damsel in distress,” she said.

As of 2021, the MCU was estimated to be worth nearly $53 billion, according to Lambert. Movies starring women such as She Hulk, Miss Marvel and Hawkeye were not opted to be blockbuster films in theaters.

“Instead, they were put on streaming services and I imagine it's because of the belief that there would not be the same amount of financial gain by putting them on the big screen,” Lambert said.

She shared research that proves poor representation of women in film leads to lower self-esteem among women who consume that media.

“Female college students, when surveyed, tend to identify and dislike the hyper sexualization of female characters. These portrayals can promote the objectification of women being societally normalized,” Lambert said.

She used four phases to show the shift in how MCU’s women characters were constructed and portrayed from 2008 to 2021.

“The resounding conclusion I came to is that the work has indicated a shift toward more authentic representation of women. But there is still a significant amount of work remaining, especially regarding characters who don't fall into the confines of being white, cisgender, and or heterosexual,” she said. “My goal is for you to gain a better understanding of the nuanced and subliminal forms of sexism found in the MCU.”

She hopes her research will provide some foundational research that others can reference in future critiques and help lead to positive change toward more authentic representation of women in film.

Alliance Public Library announces April events for children, youth

People planning to launch boats in Nebraska this spring should beware of low-water conditions across the state.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission advises boaters to be patient and cautious when launching and loading a boat.

“We are hoping not to have to close ramps,” said Zach Horstman, Game and Parks’ boating access coordinator. “While many of our ramps have been designed or extended to counter these low water conditions, the recent drought conditions still warrant users to be cautious while launching and loading.”

Horstman recommends boat operators have a spotter with them or check to see if the end of the ramp is visible from the shoreline or dock before launching, if water clarity allows.

He added that local staff are a great resource to get the most current ramp conditions as water levels and ramp conditions vary from one lake to the next.

When a lake’s water level falls, less of the boat ramp is underwater, reducing the length of the ramp for a successful launch, which can cause problems launching and loading a boat.

Once on the water, boat operators should be mindful of the increased possibility of underwater hazards during low-water conditions.

Chadron Chamber, Chadron Community Hospital to hold Easter Egg Hunt

Walking through an art gallery, maybe the Carnegie in Alliance or on an island for a Father’s Day getaway, I pause to gaze at each piece reading the narrative, artist’s name and media – “mixed” is the best. You pause and guess what really went on that canvas or into that sculpture. Mixed media will be the norm later this month at “Untrashed”, a Keep Allance Beautiful art show sponsored by Box Butte General Hospital.

The event is an opportunity to create art out of recycled goods – anything that is recycled, upcycled, reused or would have otherwise been thrown away. Artists are invited to select supplies from the KAB recycling center. Contact Executive Director Kathy Worley (308-762-3333) for questions/arrangements. Submission is free and open to anyone. There are no rules for the art and the only reqfuirement is that it be made out of “untrashed” items. Multiple entries are accepted. Artist categories are grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12 and adult with media subcategories: plastics, fiber, paper and mixed. Prizes will be awarded for each category.

Artist pieces need to be submitted to the Knight Musem, where they will be exhibited, no later than Wednesday, April 19. The show will open 6-9 p.m. Friday, April 21, with art on display and available for auction until April 28. All proceeds will be donated to KAB.

Regarding impact on artists and attendees, Kathy said, “One thing would be to open the doors to creativity – look at objects that would be artful instead of trash.” She also views the show as an opportunity to generate greater understanding of what KAB does. “More than ever we need community support.”

The hospital has been a long-term partner with KAB. Karisa Lemoncelli, promotions specialist-Marketing Dept., and Chief Operations Officer Jim Bargen described how the idea emerged for an art show. Karisa said BBGH donates funds to KAB each year as part of their mission. In the past, BBGH has donated the use of a billboard. However, “We wanted to do something to raise money,” she said. “I think the biggest thing is to raise awareness for KAB. You don’t need to be a great artist. (I hope kids showcase their talents.)”

Bargen heads the hospital’s sustainability committee, where a major emphasis is on reducing waste. The timing of the exhibit, the day before Earth Day, adds to the atmosphere. “If it’s successful it could be an annual or bienniall event. I really want people to come out and enjoy the show for a good cause,” he said.

“I do think it’s a great opportunity to see how impactful reusing materials can be,” Karisa said. “You don’t need to use everything new.”

Art itself has been a hallmark of KAB, such as supporting public projects ranging from crosswalks to the downtown bulldog mural. “Goes hand-in-hand with our painted windows to get the community’s attention. People are going to notice art in a different way,” Kathy said, adding the message is finding alternatives and using less. Although the public may gain a greater appreciation of what KAB does, I hope the artists’ creativity ultimately sparks environmental awareness and action. “Maybe it’s just another way,” Kathy said. “This is beyond important right now.”

Keep Alliance Beautiful: Untrashed - Create recycled art

LINCOLN, NEB.&nbsp; — April is Distracted Driving Awareness Month and the Nebraska State Patrol is reminding drivers to keep their focus on the road to help keep themselves and other motorists safe.

“Taking your attention off the road while driving is extremely dangerous,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Younger drivers have a higher rate of texting while driving, but motorists of all ages are engaging in this dangerous habit. We encourage all drivers to create a new habit to eliminate the temptation. When you buckle up, put the phone down.”

Nationwide, 3,522 people were killed in distracted driving crashes in 2021, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The Nebraska State Patrol and numerous law enforcement agencies across the state are teaming up this week to raise awareness on the dangers of distracted driving.

The&nbsp;U Drive. U Text. U Pay.&nbsp;initiative is a nationwide effort organized by NHTSA, running from Monday, April 3 through Sunday, April 9. During the week, troopers, deputies, and officers will be on patrol across the state, watching for dangerous driving. NSP’s portion of this effort is made possible thanks in part to a grant for $14,160 from the Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office.

Scheiderer, a Literature and Creative Writing major, plans to attend graduate school for Library Science and plans to one day become a librarian. &nbsp;

With dreams of being an editor, Scheiderer settled for what she feels is a more realistic goal, while choosing a career that could one day help her to achieve her dreams of going into editing and publishing. &nbsp;

Growing up in a small town, Scheiderer said there were multiple contributing factors that fostered her love of reading and writing. &nbsp;

“My middle school English teacher had a library in her classroom and would give us extra credit for reading books from it,” Scheiderer said. “That’s when I remember my love of reading really starting, and I’ve known I wanted to do something with English or books ever since.”&nbsp;

Scheiderer describes sharing her love of reading as her main goal of being a librarian.&nbsp;

“I think libraries are a valuable resource for the community and I spent a lot of time there when I was a kid,” Scheiderer said. “So I want to give back to a community and help kids fall in love with reading as much as I did.” &nbsp;

Scheiderer feels her activities during college helped her expand her English knowledge and skills, especially joining clubs. &nbsp;

“I originally looked to join clubs to get more involved in the English program and work at constantly improving my English skills, but I realized there is a really great social aspect to it as well and it helps make English a little more fun,” she said.&nbsp;

She praises CSC’s English program for the community created to support English majors.&nbsp;

“I’ve made a lot of really great friends in the English community here,” Scheiderer said. “We all get to know each other and being in clubs, getting time together outside of class has helped.”&nbsp;

Both Sigma Tau Delta and Tenth Street Miscellany have helped Scheiderer in different English aspects.&nbsp;

“Sigma Tau Delta [a nationally recognized English honors society] has been great for me because it pushes me to continue writing,” Scheiderer said. “There is a great social aspect to it as well. There is a national conference in Denver coming up that I’m going to and I feel fortunate to have it close to Chadron.&nbsp;

“I’m also an editor for Tenth Street Miscellany \[CSC’s student-operated literary and arts journal], so I can’t submit any of my work to it right now, but I will probably submit some entries after I graduate.”&nbsp;

Associate Professor of English Markus Jones praises Scheiderer for her efforts in the classroom. &nbsp;

“Bek is a thoughtful, creative, and curious person. She has a wonderful sense of humor and keen observation skills that make her an essential part of the classroom conversation,” Jones said. “Her curious nature not only pushes our discussions in class, but it frequently spills over into office hours, where she keeps me on my toes by asking nuanced questions or challenging certain ideas in unexpected ways.”&nbsp;

Jones also takes note of Scheiderer’s writing talents and dedication to her work. &nbsp;

“Although Bek is an incredibly talented writer, she distinguishes herself from her peers through hard work and perseverance. Like any discipline, writing requires focus and dedication, and Bek works as diligently as any student I have encountered to achieve the perfect balance in her craft,” Jones said. “She ensures that the purpose of a project is not just personally satisfying but also well received by her audience.”&nbsp;

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to help students succeed. Project Strive also focuses on career exploration, cultural and social enrichment, and self-awareness. To be eligible for the program, a student must be one of the following: A first-generation student where neither parent has a four-year degree, meet low-income status based on U.S. Department of Health and Human Services criteria, or have a documented disability. Scheiderer named March Chadron State Student of the Month 

LINCOLN — Leaders from the 
Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources at the University of 
Nebraska-Lincoln and the Agriculture Builders of Nebraska&nbsp;will visit communities across Nebraska during a statewide listening tour in April and May.

The 
listening tour, which kicked off Monday, will present an 
opportunity for the public to share their thoughts and visions for the 
future of Nebraska, their communities, and the state’s agriculture 
industry with university leadership including Mike Boehm, NU vice 
president for agriculture and Harlan vice chancellor for the Institute 
of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The tour is being conducted in 
conjunction with IANR’s Celebration of Innovation, which marks the 50th&nbsp;anniversary of IANR, as well as the 150th&nbsp;anniversary of UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“As we reflect on 
the first 50 years of UNL’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural 
Resources, we also want to look toward the future,” said Boehm. 
“Nebraskans have a key role in framing IANR’s next chapter, and this 
listening tour is an important step in co-creating our shared future 
vision.”

Future of Nebraska, agriculture the focus of listening tour

Over the past two years, consumers everywhere have 
felt the consequences of stifled energy production and dependence on 
foreign energy sources. From day one of the Biden administration, the 
president’s misguided energy policies have caused skyrocketing energy 
prices. As fuel prices shot up more than 60 percent, families struggled 
to pay for essentials like gas and groceries. Sadly, this forced many to
 resort to increasing their levels of household debt or burning through 
their family savings. Americans everywhere have seen firsthand what 
happens when we fail to prioritize domestic energy production.&nbsp;

We have also seen what happens abroad when nations 
are at the mercy of energy imports from nefarious actors. Vladimir 
Putin’s invasion of Ukraine brought the problem of energy security front
 and center and highlighted the risk of dependence on foreign energy 
sources. Unfortunately, the Biden administration’s response offered 
little relief as the president’s approach to energy policy created an 
unprecedented number of obstacles to domestic solutions to the energy 
crisis.

I am a staunch supporter of the mission to unleash 
American energy independence, and this week I joined House Republicans 
to advance an actual solution to the problems we are seeing. If enacted,
 H.R. 1, the Lower Energy Costs Act, would boost domestic energy 
production and exports, cut the red tape restricting development of all 
industries, and reverse the anti-energy policies of the Biden 
administration.

H.R. 1 expresses disapproval for President Biden’s 
cancelation of the Keystone XL pipeline, which effectively prevented 
creation of an estimated 11,000 American jobs. The bill would also 
enforce transparency from the Biden administration on their plans for 
offshore oil and gas lease sales and stop the administration’s efforts 
to phase out gasoline and internal combustion engines. Restricting 
access to these fuels only raises the cost of energy and makes the 
United States more dependent on supply chains primarily controlled by 
China.

The federal government should not be in the business
 of picking winners and losers in energy. Whether biofuels, nuclear, or 
petroleum to name a few, our approach must embrace an all-of-the-above 
path forward in which the best solutions are allowed the freedom to 
enhance prosperity for the future.

Because I recognize the potential of biofuels to be a
 significant part of this path forward toward American energy 
independence, I recently introduced bipartisan, bicameral legislation, 
the Consumer and Fuel Retailer Choice Act. This bill – which I lead 
along with Senator Deb Fischer – would ensure nationwide, year-round 
sale of E-15 at the pump. Year-round E-15 has broad, bipartisan support 
in Congress and from key stakeholders. Moving forward with year-round 
E-15 would provide consumers affordable fuel options while boosting 
American energy independence. Consumers need year-round, nationwide 
E-15, and I’ll keep working to ensure biofuels are part of our 
all-of-the-above approach to energy production.

H.R. 1 is an important step toward American energy 
dominance. American energy production has the power to lower prices and 
strengthen our energy supply chains. Increasing production and 
untangling energy from burdensome regulations is key to providing 
certainty and lowering costs for American businesses, consumers, and 
families.

Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame

Andy&nbsp;Birkel, Lincoln Southeast (2004):&nbsp;Birkel&nbsp;was undefeated in the 100, 200 and 400 meters as a senior, winning the all-class gold medal in each. He also was a standout on Southeast’s state championship football team. He started his prep career at Lincoln East, where he set a school record with a 90-yard interception return. In college, he earned all-conference honors in football playing at Northern Colorado.

Nicole&nbsp;Brungardt, Norfolk Catholic (2008):&nbsp;She set Norfolk Catholic records in volleyball (kills) and basketball (points scored), and&nbsp;won seven Class B gold medals at the state track meet. In college, she started four years for the Wayne State volleyball team and was a two-time track All-American.

Ted Butler, Lincoln Southeast (1994):&nbsp;He won back-to-back state heavyweight wrestling championships as a junior and&nbsp;senior, andwas a standout center and defensive lineman in football. On the baseball diamond, he led the Knights in home runs and doubles. In college, he was a two-year starter at center for Boise State.

Matt&nbsp;Herian, Pierce (2002):&nbsp;A three-year all-state selection as a tight end,&nbsp;Herian&nbsp;also earned all-state honors in basketball, scoring more than 1,000 points, and was a state qualifier in track. At Nebraska,&nbsp;Herian&nbsp;became the Huskers’ all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards for a tight end.

Lukas&nbsp;Hulett, Bellevue East (2006):&nbsp;A track specialist,&nbsp;Hulett&nbsp;ran the fastest 400 in Nebraska high school history while winning the 200 and 400 at the state track meet.&nbsp;At&nbsp;Nebraska, he was a four-time All-American and earned 18 Big 12 meet medals.

Chris&nbsp;Kelsay, Auburn (1998):&nbsp;He earned all-state honors in football and&nbsp;basketball, and&nbsp;won state meet medals in the shot put for Auburn. He went on to earn All-American honors playing defensive end at&nbsp;Nebraska, and&nbsp;followed that with a 10-year NFL career after being drafted in the second round by the Buffalo Bills.

Sam Koch, Seward (2001):&nbsp;While he played multiple positions on Seward’s football team, it was his skills as a punter that made Koch stand out and carried him into his future. He was a two-year starter at Nebraska, setting a school record for average yards per punt. The first Husker punter drafted by the&nbsp;NFL,&nbsp;he spent 16 years with the Baltimore Ravens.

Dennis Korinek, Ulysses (1951):&nbsp;A six-man football phenom, Korinek still holds the state’s six-man career scoring record with 821 points, an effort that includes 118 rushing touchdowns. He led Ulysses to the six-man state championship with a win in the 1949 Apple Bowl. He won two events at the state track meet and tied the state record in the shot put before going on to the University of Nebraska, where he lettered three times in football and once in baseball.

Preston Love Jr., Omaha Tech (1960):&nbsp;All-state in football and basketball and a state champion in the high hurdles, Love was considered the best football player in the state his senior year. He attended Northwestern on a football and track scholarship, placing third in the Big 10 indoor hurdles, before transferring to Nebraska, where he lettered in football and track.

Luke Pinkelman, Cozad (2007):&nbsp;He set a state meet record in the shot put and won the all-class gold medal in the discus his senior year, capping a career in which he won three Class B shot put gold medals and two all-class discus golds. After a year at Iowa State, he returned&nbsp;to Nebraska, where he earned All-American honors in the shot put and discus.&nbsp;Also&nbsp;a football standout, he was a two-time all-state pick for the Haymakers.

Cami (Hubbs) Pruett, Omaha Westside (2007):&nbsp;Nebraska’s only undefeated four-time state tennis champion, she led Westside to three state titles while amassing a 117-0 singles record and a 22-0 doubles record. At Ohio State, she set freshman records for most wins in singles and&nbsp;doubles, and&nbsp;was twice voted the team’s most valuable player.

Stephanie (Streeks)&nbsp;Ruffridge, Gering (1993):&nbsp;Class A’s record-holder for blocks in a single volleyball match and blocks in a season,&nbsp;Streeks&nbsp;emerged as Gering’s premier three-sport star, earning all-state honors in basketball and winning the all-class gold medal in the high jump.&nbsp;Streeks&nbsp;played at Long Beach State, which won the NCAA volleyball title her redshirt season.

Tim Cannon, Omaha Bryan/Millard North:&nbsp;Back-to-back state titles at Millard North capped his 43-year career in&nbsp;boys&nbsp;basketball. His career record was 539-375, including 401-288 in 34 seasons at Bryan and 138-87 at Millard North.

Jerry Cover, Norfolk:&nbsp;In his 42 years as a golf coach, the last 37 at Norfolk, his teams were girls state champions three times, and he retired after his 2019 boys state championship team. The Panthers were state runners-up 11 times.

Dave&nbsp;Eppert, Lincoln East:&nbsp;A two-time national coach of the year in gymnastics, his Spartans were state champions five times in girls and four times in boys, with seven runner-up teams. East was ranked No. 1 nationally in&nbsp;boys&nbsp;gymnastics in 1988 and 1989.

Jean Janssen&nbsp;Groth, Wisner-Pilger (deceased):&nbsp;In only two of her 41 seasons did the Gators finish below .500 in volleyball. Her career record of 828-252 included 14 state tournament appearances, five trips to the state finals and the 1994 Class C-2 state championship.

Ron&nbsp;Mimick, Aquinas:&nbsp;The ninth coach to reach the 300-win milestone in football, he’s been at Aquinas since 1991. His football teams have won seven state titles and been in two other finals, and his boys track teams have won two titles and been runners-up twice.

John&nbsp;Farrand, Lincoln:&nbsp;Beyond his 41 years in coaching cross country, track and football in Classes A and B, the past president of the Nebraska Coaches Association has been a starter for cross country and track meets, a floor manager for state tournaments and has sat on the board of appeals for the state track meet.

James Ayres, Ogallala: He was involved in wrestling officiating for 49 years, starting with junior varsity matches and working state and district meets from 1976 to 2007, he continued as head supervisor and assistant supervisor of officials at the state tournament until 2019.

–Lincoln East’s undefeated 2022&nbsp;boys&nbsp;tennis team: The Spartans, with three freshmen, two sophomores and a senior, didn’t lose a match all season in any of the four divisions while winning the program’s 11thstate title. Hunter Nelson and Samarth&nbsp;Sajeesh&nbsp;played singles. Kirby Le and Caden&nbsp;Haar, and Joseph Bicknell and Kayden Le, were the doubles teams.

–South Sioux City&nbsp;girls&nbsp;basketball, 1995-2005: The Cardinals, coached by Kelly Flynn, were Class B state champions 10 of the 11 seasons and runner-up the other year.

–Rachel&nbsp;Balkovec, Omaha: The first woman to be a full-time manager of a minor-league baseball team has returned for her second season with the Class A Tampa Tarpons in the New York Yankees organization. The Omaha&nbsp;Skutt&nbsp;and New Mexico graduate has been in pro baseball for 12 seasons.

–John and Delores&nbsp;Bellar&nbsp;family,&nbsp;Walthill: The&nbsp;Bellars’ three sons were teachers and coaches – John has retired from BRLD, Jay is retiring as NSAA executive director and Jeff is football coach at Norfolk Catholic —&nbsp;and many of their grandchildren have been&nbsp;high school athletes.

–Ansley volleyball, 1973: Under first-year coach Pat&nbsp;Hoblyn, the Warriors completed a 19-0 season by winning the Class C state championship.

–Blair&nbsp;boys&nbsp;soccer, 1998: Coached by Todd Wick, the Bears, who won their first state title, were the first undefeated boys team in the first 11 years of NSAA-sanctioned soccer and were ranked nationally.

Ogallala&nbsp;girls&nbsp;basketball, 1998: In an epic rematch of the previous year’s Class B final, the Indians beat four-time returning champion South Sioux City 69-58 for their first state title and a No. 23 national ranking by USA Today.

RABUN COUNTY, Georgia —&nbsp;The Georgia State Patrol has arrested a Nebraska woman on suspicion of second-degree vehicular homicide following a wreck in Rabun County, Georgia.




The crash happened just after 8 a.m. on Wednesday, April 5, on GA 2.&nbsp;

According to the state patrol, Jennifer Rzonca of North Platte was driving a Ford Explorer eastbound on GA 2 when the vehicle
 ran off the road in a curve. The crash killed a passenger in the 
vehicle, identified as 40-year-old Douglas Rzonca, also of North Platte.

Jennifer Rzonca sustained minor injuries. EMS transported her to Mountain Lakes Medical Center in Clayton for treatment.




A trooper with GSP Post 7 in Toccoa investigated the crash and 
says the 30-year-old Rzonca was “traveling too fast for the curve.” In 
addition to vehicular homicide, the trooper arrested her on suspicion of not 
exercising due care and failure to maintain lane.

One from North Platte dead, one arrested after accident in Georgia

United States Attorney Steven Russell announced Wednesday that Jason Charles Fink, 43, of Omaha was sentenced today in federal court in Omaha for transmitting an interstate communication containing a threat. Chief United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter Jr. sentenced Fink to 12 months and 1 day of imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system. After his release from prison, Fink will begin a three-year term of supervised release.

On May 26, 2021, Fink, using his cellphone in Omaha left a voicemail with Community State Bank at their Ankeny, Iowa, branch.&nbsp; In the voicemail Fink threatened to harm Community State Bank employees.&nbsp; Fink’s voicemail was eventually received by employees of Community State Bank who reported the voicemail to law enforcement.&nbsp;

This case is part of Project Guardian, the Department of Justice’s signature initiative to reduce gun violence and enforce federal firearms laws. Initiated by the Attorney General in the fall of 2019, Project Guardian draws upon the Department’s past successful programs to reduce gun violence; enhances coordination of federal, state, local, and tribal authorities in investigating and prosecuting gun crimes; improves information-sharing by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives when a prohibited individual attempts to purchase a firearm and is denied by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS), to include taking appropriate actions when a prospective purchaser is denied by the NICS for mental health reasons; and ensures that federal resources are directed at the criminals posing the greatest threat to our communities.

Neb. man sentenced for threatening bank employees

GRAND ISLAND—
 Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Colorado minor 
and located two missing juveniles during a traffic stop on Interstate 80
 near York.

At approximately 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, a trooper observed a Chevrolet Colorado pickup driving with a headlight out on eastbound
 I-80 at mile marker 347. The trooper performed a traffic stop.

During
 the traffic stop, the trooper discovered that the license plates on the
 vehicle belonged to a different vehicle and
 that the pickup had been reported stolen from Colorado. The driver was 
taken into custody. Troopers located two juveniles in the pickup as 
well. The 17-year-old male and 12-year-old female had both been reported
 missing from Colorado. Troopers discovered that
 the driver was in violation of a protection order against one of the 
passengers.&nbsp;


The
 driver, an 18-year-old male, was taken into custody for theft by 
unlawful taking $5,000+, kidnapping, violating a protection
 order, possession of an open alcohol container, possession of drug 
paraphernalia, obstructing a peace officer, and other charges. He was 
lodged in York County jail.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;
