Missing Panhandle man found deceased in Wyoming 

NORTH PLATTE — Taytom Timbers, Alliance, has become the second signee 
to join the North Platte Community College Knights men's golf team for its inaugural season in the 
fall of 2023.

Timbers is a multi-sport athlete for the Bulldogs and will showcase his talents on the course as part of the
 Knights' first signing class.

"I chose North Platte because of the opportunity to pursue a degree in business and play golf at the next level,"
 said Timbers.

Alliance student-athlete signs to golf for North Platte CC

AURORA, NEB.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol, Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, and Hamilton County Attorney are able to release additional information regarding the investigation into a homicide that occurred in Marquette.

The investigation began at approximately 12:45 p.m. Sunday, when the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at a residence of 502 Carnahan Street in Marquette. Inside the home, the Sheriff’s Office located a deceased woman, identified as Angela Adams, 49. The Sheriff’s Office requested assistance from the Nebraska State Patrol.

Investigators learned that Adams had been with her husband, Jeffrey Adams, Saturday evening, but he was not at the home when authorities arrived to investigate the incident. A short time later, Jeffrey Adams arrived at the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office to turn himself in. He was arrested by Nebraska State Patrol investigators.

Investigators have determined that the incident began with an argument, during which Jeffrey Adams struck Angela Adams multiple times. Jeffrey Adams then left the home. Adams, 47, has been lodged in Hamilton County Jail for second degree murder. The investigation remains ongoing.

Prescribed fire workshop to be held in Gordon 

LINCOLN — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Lincoln man after a hit and run crash led to a pursuit in north Lincoln.

At approximately 3:35 p.m. Sunday, a trooper was on patrol on 27th Street near Interstate 80 in Lincoln when he saw what appeared to be two vehicles that had just had a crash. The trooper contacted both drivers. As the trooper was attempting to investigate the situation, the driver of one of the vehicles, a Chevrolet S10, reentered his vehicle and fled the scene. 

The vehicle fled northbound on 27th Street with speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. The suspect then turned eastbound on Mill Road and north on 40th Street. The suspect turned right onto a rural driveway and entered a field. After a short time in the field, both vehicles reentered the driveway where a collision occurred. The vehicles left the driveway and struck agriculture equipment in the field. The trooper was then able to take the suspect into custody.

The suspect, Donald Roth, 62, of Lincoln, was transported to Bryan Health West Campus for treatment of minor injuries. The trooper was not injured. Roth has since been medically cleared and has been lodged in Lancaster County jail for driving under a 15-year license revocation, willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, leaving the scene of an accident, and criminal mischief. The investigation remains ongoing.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will certify youth fishing instructors at workshops in five locations across the state in the coming months.

Instructors are part of the Youth Fishing Program, a statewide team of volunteers and Game and Parks staff who host educational fishing events.

Workshop participants will receive training and tools to conduct youth fishing clinics. These volunteers will have access to Game and Parks’ loaner fishing equipment and educational materials for events. They also will receive program incentives. Instructors are encouraged to volunteer for such Game and Parks programs as Community Fishing Nights and the Outdoor Expos.

Wildcat Tales preschool program is March 14

Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area will host the monthly Wildcat Tales preschool program March 14.

The program Leaping Leprechaun will meet at the Nature Center at 10 a.m. Mountain time. There will be a lesson plan, story and hands-on activity specifically targeted for children ages 2-6 years.

The program is free, but a vehicle park entry permit is required.&nbsp;For more information, contact the Nature Center at 308-436-3777. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Homeschool Hike set for March 15-16 at Schramm Park SRA

Homeschool families are invited to join an outdoor educator on a guided hike to learn about evergreens at Schramm Park State Recreation Area near Gretna during the Homeschool Hikes program March 15 at 9 a.m. and March 16 at 2 p.m.

Homeschool Hikes is a monthly nature exploration program hosted by the Schramm Education Center geared toward homeschool families.

Wildlife viewers’ survey topic of webinar

Wildlife viewing is one of the fastest growing wildlife-related recreation activities in the nation, but wildlife viewers do not contribute much to funding for wildlife conservation. Wildcat Hills to host&nbsp;Beautiful Butterflies&nbsp;homeschool program

Learn about butterflies, their adaptions and the places they call home during the Wildcat Hills Homeschool program Beautiful Butterflies on March 16.

This program meets at 10 a.m. Mountain time at the Wildcat Hills Nature Center.

Venture Parks offer education programs in March

A variety of fun, educational events are scheduled throughout March in Nebraska’s Venture Parks.

Venture Parks, Nebraska’s four state parks and recreation areas along the Platte River – Eugene T. Mahoney State Park, Platte River State Park, Schramm Park State Recreation Area and Louisville State Recreation Area – are where unique experiences and enhanced camping opportunities have been created in response to demand.

Spring Break Days –&nbsp;Fight boredom and spend a day off from school at Spring Break Days. This fun, educational event will be March 10 and 17 at Schramm Education Center.

The theme is Fabulous Foxes, as participants learn all about foxes. There are activities from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for seniors and ages 4-12, and ages 3 and under free.

This workshop March 17-18 in North Platte will equip educators with curriculum and the experience of seeing prairie chickens in-person before teaching about them in their classroomsDuring this workshop at the West Central Research and Extension Center, participants will have the opportunity to view a lek from a viewing blind to watch the birds’ unique mating rituals.

Lessons covered during this workshop will best suit educators of youth in K-8 settings, but all educators are welcome to attend.

 BLUFFS, Iowa — Diamond Cook, age 31, of Omaha was sentenced on
 February 16, 2023, to 48 months in prison following his plea of guilty 
to being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm. After he is 
released from prison, Cook will serve three years of supervised release.

On February 24, 2022, a Fremont County Deputy stopped a car on 
Interstate 29 for not displaying registration and a nonworking brake 
light. The deputy could smell marijuana coming from the car. Cook was a 
passenger and lied about his name. During a search of the car, law 
enforcement located a loaded handgun. Cook is prohibited from having any
 firearms because he is a convicted felon.

United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District 
of Iowa made the announcement. The Fremont Cunty Sheriff’s Office, the 
Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, 
Firearms and Explosives investigated the case.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program 
bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they
 serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our 
neighborhoods safer for everyone. In May 2021, the Department of Justice
 launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN based on 
these core principles: fostering trust and legitimacy in our 
communities, supporting community-based organizations that help prevent 
violence from occurring in the first place, setting focused and 
strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring the results.

Nebraska man sentenced in federal court for firearm offense

The Alliance Volunteer Fire Department battled an early morning building fire this morning (Feb. 25).&nbsp;

The fire was in an abandoned home outside Alliance in Box Butte County.&nbsp;

"[The fire was] fully involved upon our arrival," Alliance Fire Department said. "We had one engine, two tankers, a command vehicle and nine firefighters on scene."

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will accept archery paddlefish permit applications March 1 to 14.

The application period begins at 1 p.m. Central Time on March 1. Postal mail applications must be received in Game and Parks’ Lincoln office by 5 p.m. CST and online applications by 11:59 p.m. March 14.

A nonrefundable $7 application fee is due at the time of application. Applicants supplying valid email addresses will be notified when the draw is complete. Those not providing valid email addresses will be responsible for monitoring their status online.

Results of the draw will be made available by March 20. Payment for awarded permits is due by at 11:59 p.m. April 5.

Permits will be issued in a random drawing based on preference points earned; applicants with the most preference points will receive the highest priority. Permits awarded but unpaid will result in the applicant losing preference points and forfeiting the permit. Unpaid or unawarded permits remaining after the drawing will be made available to the next resident applicant.

An applicant will receive a preference point if he or she is not awarded a permit in the drawing. An additional preference point will be added each year he or she is unsuccessful in the drawing. Any person who is issued a paddlefish permit and any person who does not apply at least once during five consecutive years will lose all accumulated preference points. In lieu of participating in the draw, anglers may purchase one preference point per season during the application period. The cost is $10 for residents and $20 for nonresidents.

Two people – both residents or both nonresidents – may submit a joint application. That application will be assigned to the applicant with the fewest preference points.

A person may have no more than two archery paddlefish permits per year: one earned via application and one bought over the counter, if unsold permits remain. According to the Preamble to the Constitution, the purpose of the federal government is “…to establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity.” These goals are achieved through federal government taxing and spending.

Federal spending can be broken down into two primary categories: mandatory and discretionary. Mandatory spending is required by existing laws creating things like Social Security. Mandatory spending represents nearly two-thirds of annual federal spending.

Discretionary spending is voted on by Congress in their annual appropriations process. Generally, Congress allocates over half of the discretionary budget towards national defense and the rest to fund the administration of other agencies and programs.

What does our federal income tax pay for? In 2022, the federal budget broke down like this: 19% Social Security; 15% Health; 14% Income Security; 12% National Defense; 12% Medicare; 11% Education and Training; 8% Interest; 4% Veterans Services; 2% Transportation; 2% Government; 1% Other.

Federal revenues come from a variety of sources. The largest is individual income tax, 52%. Social Security and Medicare make up another 34%. The other 14% comes from corporate income tax, excise tax, estate tax, customs and tariffs, land leases, admission to national parks, etc. When our revenues are less than our spending, the government borrows and we have a deficit.

According to the OECD (Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development) the United States actually collects less in taxes than most other nations, 26.6% of our GDP. The international average is 34.1% of GDP.

Income taxes in the United States began in the 1861 to fund the Civil War, and then were repealed in 1872. Prior to and after the Civil War, tariffs on imported goods and excise taxes on products like liquor funded the government.

In 1913 the 16th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified. "The Congress shall have the power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration."

Income tax was set up to be progressive, because the tariffs and excise taxes on products were terribly regressive, meaning lower income people paid a much higher percent of their income to support the government. Progressive taxes divide income into parts called brackets, with

each bracket paying a different rate. If part of a person's income falls into the top bracket, only that portion pays that rate.

Congress in 1913 enacted 1% tax on net personal incomes above $3,000, with a 6% surtax on incomes above $500,000. By 1918, the top rate of the income tax was increased to 77% on income over $1,000,000, equivalent of almost $20 million today, to finance World War I.

In 1932 the top marginal tax rate was increased to 63% during the Great Depression and steadily increased, reaching 94% in 1944 (on income over $200,000, equivalent of $3 million today). During World War II, Congress introduced payroll withholding and quarterly tax payments.

Income tax now is paid by almost two-thirds of the population. The lowest-earning workers, especially those with dependents, pay no income taxes. We each receive a standard deduction to subtract from our total income. Child tax credits and the Earned Income Tax Credit also reduce taxable income.

Taxes continue to be controversial, and there are lots of suggestions for changing the system. Should we all pay more so we don't have a deficit? Should corporations pay more, because they benefit the most from national defense and trade policies? Should we switch to a flat tax rate? National sales (consumption) tax? Value added tax? Each of these has drawbacks but will continue to be debated.

For now we just need to download that Form 1040 and figure our share.

Getting Ahead: Federal taxes 

My Road Trip this week, took me clear across town. For Valentines Day, my friend Betty Jo and I decided to go to Sam &amp; Louie's right here in Alliance. She had a lunch of lasagna and tomato bisque soup, with tortellini's in it. She said it was fantastic and it was under $10. I decided to go for the T Rex spaghetti. It was huge! It came with a salad, bread and a huge plate of spaghetti with meatballs, bacon, mozzarella. And it was so delicious. It may be my new favorite.

Needless to say we both had to ask for boxes to take our food home. 

Our waitress was a very sweet and charming young lady and on top of things. Hope to get her again next time. 

Owner Chris Mills came in, and was working the tables. I got a chance to visit with him about Alliance, which is my favorite subject. He truly believes in Alliance and the people here. 

Sam &amp; Louie's has always been very supportive of the community, the kids, and the non profits. Glad to have them in Alliance, and cant wait to&nbsp;&nbsp;go for lunch again. Their pizza is out of this world!

 States Attorney Steven Russell announced that Socorro Alejandres 
Alvarez, 32, of Mexico, was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Lincoln,
 Nebraska, for distribution of 500 grams or more of methamphetamine.&nbsp; 
Senior United States District Judge John M. Gerrard sentenced Alvarez to
 180 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp; 
After his release from prison, he will begin a 10-year term of 
supervised release.

On June 24, 2020, while incarcerated in the Great Plains Correctional
 Facility in Hinton, Oklahoma, Alvarez used an illicit cell phone to 
contact Rosalio Reynosao Arrellano in Los Angeles, California, to 
arrange for a package of methamphetamine to be delivered to Nebraska.&nbsp; 
Law enforcement intercepted the package, and it contained 420 grams of 
actual methamphetamine.&nbsp; Alvarez had made prior shipments of 
methamphetamine to Nebraska while incarcerated.&nbsp; These shipments were 
sent to Shannon Rojas, Shane Lawrence, and Jeremiah Schnoor.&nbsp;

Shannon Rojas was sentenced to 70 months’ incarceration on May 27, 
2022, for distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.&nbsp; Shane 
Lawrence was sentenced to 198 months’ incarceration on February 11, 
2022, for possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of actual
 methamphetamine. On February 15, 2023, Jeremiah Schnoor entered a plea 
of guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to 
distribute 500 grams or more of methamphetamine. He is scheduled for 
sentencing on May 18, 2023.

This case was investigated by the WING (Western Nebraska Intelligence
 Narcotics Group), which is made up of the Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts
 Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff Police Department, and the 
Sidney Police Department.&nbsp; Kearney Police Department was also involved 
in this investigation as was the&nbsp;&nbsp; Central Nebraska Drug and Safe 
Streets Task Force (CNDSSTF).&nbsp; CNDSSTF consists of the Federal Bureau of
 Investigation, Grand Island Police Department, Hall County Sheriff’s 
Office, and the Nebraska State Patrol.&nbsp;

This effort is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force
 (OCDETF) operation. OCDETF identifies, disrupts, and dismantles the 
highest-level criminal organizations that threaten the United States 
using a prosecutor-led, intelligence-driven, multi-agency approach.

Mexican man sentenced for conspiracy to distribute meth

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. — We're a month into the tax season and officials with the Internal Revenue Service reporting things seem to be going smoothly.&nbsp;

Spokesman for the IRS Michael Devine said as of Feb. 10 almost 29 million tax returns have been filed for this tax season. &nbsp;

Devine says to get your returns ready to be filed, most people should be looking out for their W-2s from employers and a variety of the form 1099.&nbsp;

"So, these are the forms that you normally get, and unless your situation has really changed from last year go back and look at the 2021 tax return," Devine said. "That would give you a very good starting point on what your 2022 return will look like, and it will also tell you what documents you used then and which ones you should have now."&nbsp;

Devine said people should already have their tax forms, and if you do already have those forms, there's no need to wait until the last minute to file.&nbsp;

"Because April 18th is the date you have to file your tax return or get an extension, it's also the day that you have to pay any taxes that are due, there's no extension on paying just an extension on actually preparing the tax return," Devine said. "So, waiting until the last minute is something a lot of people do, it's not a good thing to do."&nbsp;

Devine says if you have not received your tax forms by the end of this month you should check your spam folder if they were emailed or call your employer.&nbsp; You can also contact the IRS for help if you are missing forms.&nbsp;

This year, thanks to some legalities, taxpayers will have extra time to file their returns.&nbsp;

Devine says normally tax returns are due by April 15th, however that day falls on a Saturday and legally taxes cannot be collected on a weekend or holiday, so it would roll over to the following Monday&nbsp;

"Unfortunately, or fortunately for taxpayers, April 16th is Emancipation Day, that's a holiday that's celebrated in Washington D.C." Devine said. &nbsp;

And because that's on a Sunday, the federal holiday would move to Monday, April 17, pushing the tax deadline to April 18. &nbsp;

"So, this year you have three extra days to file, but we really say if you've got all the documents you need, don't wait," Devine said. &nbsp;

Devine said just because the deadline to file is April 18, you still have to pay those taxes that are due, which you cannot get an extension on.&nbsp;

Since then the City has used these funds to assist with a suicide awareness and prevention training;&nbsp; purchase umbrellas and octopus at Big Blue Bay;&nbsp; construct Hal Murray Softball Complex sidewalks&nbsp; and protective backstop fencing;&nbsp; replace Senior Center windows; install Bower Park sprinkler system;&nbsp; expand the Rolling Prairie Disc Golf Course;&nbsp; assist with purchase of the holiday decorations for 3rd Street; and contribute toward the outside play equipment for the AllianceRecreation Center.

This year’s Choice Gas selection period will run from April 6-26, 2023. ACE Funding for the City of Alliance

<a>Carnegie is pleased to announce the award recipients for the exhibit,&nbsp;Box Butte Art Society Judged Spring Show.&nbsp; </a>

<a>This years’ exhibit includes twelve adult artists and two youth artists. There are thirty-four pieces total.&nbsp; Works include&nbsp; photography, sculpture,&nbsp; mixed media,&nbsp; wood working,&nbsp; oil painting,&nbsp; watercolor painting, and acrylic paintings.&nbsp; Art educator Millicent Butler of Hemingford&nbsp; served as the judge for the exhibit this year and had the very difficult job of selecting awarded pieces from a wide array of beautiful artwork.&nbsp; &nbsp;</a><a></a>The awards selected are as follows.&nbsp;

Best of Show was awarded to Clarice Hynes watercolor, “Winter Flicker.”

Certificates of Excellence went to Robert Peltz’ acrylic painting, “Oasis” and Audrey Powles’ photograph, “Velma” from her Cows in Hats series. 

Honorable Mentions went to Becci Thomas’ mixed media sculpture, “Serengeti Splendor”,&nbsp; Steph Mantooth’s photograph, “O Give Me a Home”,&nbsp; and Mark Van Housen’s wood sculpture, “Bud Vase.” 

Youth Certificate of Excellence went to Olive Radice’s mixed media piece, “The Curious Burning of Ms. Dorothy.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

The exhibit will be on display in the Skala upper galleries and will exhibit from February 14th&nbsp;through March 18th!&nbsp; &nbsp;The artist receptions will take place March 11th&nbsp;from 5-7pm.&nbsp; The event is open to the public and food and beverage will be provided.

Don’t forget to also check out Alliance Arts Council featured artist, Michaela Bradley from Omaha, NE.&nbsp; Her exhibit&nbsp;Holographic&nbsp;exhibits digital artwork creating using a computer.&nbsp; Michaela is the owner of her own design agency, Painted Wolf Studios&nbsp; and will be visiting us all the way from Omaha, NE for her reception on March 11th.&nbsp; Please come celebrate her talent as well as our many local talented artists on display right now.&nbsp;

There are thirty-four pieces total.&nbsp; Works include&nbsp; photography, sculpture,&nbsp; mixed media,&nbsp; wood working,&nbsp; oil painting,&nbsp; watercolor painting, and acrylic paintings.&nbsp; Art educator Millicent Butler of Hemingford&nbsp; served as the judge for the exhibit this year and had the very difficult job of selecting awarded pieces from a wide array of beautiful artwork.&nbsp; &nbsp;</a><a></a>The awards selected are as follows.&nbsp; Best of Show was awarded to Clarice Hynes watercolor, “Winter Flicker.”<figure>

 </figure>Honorable Mentions went to Becci Thomas’ mixed media sculpture, “Serengeti Splendor”,&nbsp; Steph Mantooth’s photograph, “O Give Me a Home”,&nbsp; and Mark Van Housen’s wood sculpture, “Bud Vase.” Youth Certificate of Excellence went to Olive Radice’s mixed media piece, “The Curious Burning of Ms. Dorothy.”&nbsp;&nbsp;The exhibit will be on display in the Skala upper galleries and will exhibit from February 14th&nbsp;through March 18th!&nbsp; &nbsp;The artist receptions will take place March 11th&nbsp;from 5-7pm.&nbsp; The event is open to the public and food and beverage will be provided.Don’t forget to also check out Alliance Arts Council featured artist, Michaela Bradley from Omaha, NE.&nbsp; Her exhibit&nbsp;Holographic&nbsp;exhibits digital artwork creating using a computer.&nbsp; Michaela is the owner of her own design agency, Painted Wolf Studios&nbsp; and will be visiting us all the way from Omaha, NE for her reception on March 11th.&nbsp; Please come celebrate her talent as well as our many local talented artists on display right now.&nbsp;As always, we want to thank the incredible local businesses that support arts opportunities for our community.
