LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol, Governor Jim Pillen, and a grateful Nebraska family were pleased to present the NSP Life Saver Award to Trooper Braden Heidbrink.

“Most of you that enter this profession are very humble. You don’t do this job for moments like this,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh. “We sign up to do this job because we genuinely have a passion to serve, to protect, to be there at the most horrible, horrific moment in somebody’s life, that we can hopefully make a difference in that moment.”

On May 10, 2025, Lancaster County 911 received a call of a medical emergency in which a 4-year-old child was severely injured in a lawnmower accident in Hallam. Trooper Heidbrink was the closest first responder and arrived within minutes. Upon arrival, Trooper Heidbrink found the child’s father attempting to care for the child, who had serious injuries to both legs. Trooper Heidbrink quickly applied a tourniquet to the child’s right leg and then bandaged the child’s left leg. Hallam EMS arrived on scene and transported the child, Percy, to the hospital.

The injuries eventually required amputation of Percy’s right leg, but the quick actions of Trooper Heidbrink were credited with saving Percy’s life.

Tuesday, Percy and his family joined NSP, Governor Pillen, Trooper Heidbrink’s family and several members of Trooper Heidbrink’s National Guard unit for the presentation of the NSP Life Saver Award. Percy also got to show off his prosthetic leg.

“You responded, took care of this little guy in an incredible moment,” Governor Jim Pillen told Trooper Heidbrink. “Amazing stuff. He’s going to have a great life because of what you did in that moment.”

SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — Authorities have confirmed that skeletal remains discovered last month at Scotts Bluff National Monument belong to Chance Englebert, the Moorcroft, Wyoming man who went missing in July 2019. After a six-year investigation involving dozens of agencies across multiple states, officials say there is no evidence his death was anything other than accidental.

According to a joint press release from the Scotts Bluff County Attorney’s Office and the Gering Police Department, hikers found what appeared to be human remains on October 10, 2025. Law enforcement responded immediately and secured the scene. Dental records and DNA testing later confirmed the remains were those of Englebert.

Experts in forensic dentistry, anthropology, archaeology, pathology, and DNA analysis — including specialists at Physicians Laboratory in Douglas County, the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, and the Center for Human Identification in Fort Worth, Texas — assisted in identifying the remains. The Douglas County Coroner’s Office determined the cause of death to be “a pattern of blunt force trauma most consistent with a rapid deceleration event including, but not limited to, a fall from height.” The death has officially been ruled accidental.

Investigators found evidence aligning with this conclusion. The release states that Englebert died as a result of a fall from a significant height at Scotts Bluff National Monument. The distance from the likely point of the fall to the location where his torso was found ranged from roughly 130 feet at the shortest point to nearly 290 feet.

Englebert disappeared on July 6, 2019. In the days that followed, law enforcement and volunteers conducted extensive ground searches throughout the Scottsbluff and Gering areas. As the case progressed, the investigation shifted toward gathering technical and forensic information. Officers executed numerous search warrants, reviewed phone and social media records, examined financial data, interviewed hundreds of individuals, and followed up on countless tips.

The search efforts also included multiple large-scale operations with K-9 units, forensic teams, specialized search and rescue crews, and partner agencies from across Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, and beyond. The release notes that agencies including the FBI, Nebraska State Patrol, National Park Service, Nebraska Game and Parks, multiple county sheriff’s offices, fire departments, medical examiners, and the NamUS Center for Human Identification all contributed to the investigation over the last six years.

Despite the volume of tips and extensive forensic work, authorities say none of the information gathered over the years indicated foul play or suggested that Englebert’s disappearance was anything other than a tragic accident.

Family and next of kin were notified prior to the public release of the findings.

Competing against thousands of entries from fairs across the nation, and around the world, the Nebraska State Fair once again stood out as a leader in agriculture, guest experience, commercial exhibits, commercial marketing and sponsorship innovation.

Neb. State Fair Takes Home 14 IAFE Awards, Including Seven 1st-Place Honors

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen and First Lady Suzanne will host the 77th&nbsp;annual lighting of the State Christmas Tree in the Capitol Rotunda on Saturday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. Attendees to this year’s event will be required to present a ticket for entry.&nbsp;Hosted by award-winning broadcaster Charlie Brogan, the program will include music by the Sharpshooters Woodwind group from the Nebraska National Guard 43rd&nbsp;Army Band and a variety of choral and musical performances. Gov. Pillen will deliver a holiday message prior to the lighting.

This year’s Christmas tree is a spruce donated by Pat and Ana Lostaglia of Ashland. It is scheduled to arrive at the State Capitol early next week. Workers will then adorn the tree with lights and decorations in preparation for the event on Dec. 6.&nbsp;This year, the tree lighting ceremony will be a ticketed event. Tickets will be issued through the offices of each of the 49 state senators. Anyone wishing to attend should reach out to the senator representing their district for information.

Throughout the holiday season, visitors are welcome to the State Capitol. Free guided tours are offered hourly Monday – Friday at the following times: 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. On Saturdays, tours begin at 10 a.m. and on Sundays at 1 p.m. The State Capitol will be closed on Christmas Day (Dec. 25) and again on New Year’s Day (Jan. 1).

The 2026 festival will take place January 18–24 in Rochester, Minnesota.

WNCC is part of KCACTF’s Region 5 — the largest of the eight national regions — which includes hundreds of programs across a wide range of institution types and sizes. As a two-year college competing alongside four-year universities and graduate-level programs, WNCC stands in rare company. Two-year colleges are seldom nominated, and even more rarely selected, making this recognition especially significant.

“This marks our second production nomination out of the three we’ve submitted during my five years here,” said Violette Briggs, WNCC's theatre instructor. “To be considered among large, well-funded, fully staffed programs speaks volumes about the exceptional work being created here in the Panhandle and the dedication of our students, faculty, designers, musicians, and the entire performing arts community. Our productions are deeply collaborative across music, theatre, and design, and this honor reflects that shared commitment.”

Specific Landfill Operations Closed Due to Wind Speed

CHADRON, Neb. - On Monday, Nov. 24, 2025, Sgt. Chelsey Stolley and Officer Christina Hanson were called to a residence in Chadron to remove a female who was intoxicated and causing a disturbance. On arrival at the residence., Sgt. Stolley and Officer Hanson located 40-year-old Stephanie Catches screaming loudly and rolling around on the porch of the residence.

The reporting party advised Sgt. Stolley and Officer Hanson that Stephanie had became drunk and become violent and wanted Catches removed from the property. Sgt. Stolley gave Catches numerous commands to leave the property and Catches refused, resulting with the officers placing Catches under arrest for 2nd Degree Trespassing, a Class III Misdemeanor.

Catches was then transported to the Chadron Community Hospital, for medical clearance for admittance to the Dawes County Jail. While in the emergency room, Catches continued to yell and scream and kicked at Sgt. Stolley striking Sgt. Stolley in the head. As a result, Catches additionally was charged with Assault on an Officer, Class II Felony.

After medical clearance was obtained, Catches was transported to the Dawes County Jail for further processing and lodging. Bond was set at 10 percent of $30,000.

SCOTTS BLUFF COUNTY, Neb. — Human remains discovered last month near Scotts Bluff National Monument have been confirmed Monday night through DNA testing to be those of Chance Engelbert, the Wyoming man who vanished in July 2019.

Engelbert, then 25, went missing after walking away from a family gathering in Gering. Despite years of searches, public attention, and ongoing efforts by law enforcement, no trace of him was found until October, when a person in a rural area on the north side of the monument reported finding remains and personal items.

Those items matched descriptions provided by Engelbert’s family, prompting forensic testing that has now officially identified the remains.

On Monday, Engelbert’s mother, Dawn Engelbert, issued a public statement confirming what investigators shared with her family:

“As most have already read on Facebook, unfortunately including our family before I could let them know, that the DNA confirmed that it was Chance. I was on the phone with Gering PD when it was posted. All I can say is, that this is not any type of closure to us — will just always be more questions. I am told that the State Attorney will be doing a press release Wednesday and his remains will be released to his next of kin at that time. I thank you for all the support, prayers and love! Please stay kind and careful what you post!”

Authorities have not released details regarding the cause or manner of death. Officials say additional forensic analysis is underway, and more information is expected following the State Attorney’s planned press release later this week.

Engelbert’s disappearance has remained one of the region’s most followed missing-person cases for more than six years. The confirmation of his remains answers long-standing questions about his whereabouts but leaves the circumstances of his final moments unresolved.

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;Caregiving for an ill, aging, or disabled family member is a challenging and rewarding endeavor.&nbsp;During November, the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) celebrates the vital roles all caregivers play in bolstering communities with priceless natural supports, allowing loved ones to live independently and in their own homes for as long as possible. The DHHS Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) also recognizes the resources available for caregivers to replenish, rejuvenate and balance responsibilities.

A family caregiver is defined as someone who provides assistance and support to an individual with a special health care need. In Nebraska, an estimated one in five adults are family caregivers.

“Caregiving can seem isolating, taxing, and confusing. Caregivers often assist their loved ones automatically without considering the personal physical, mental, emotional and financial investment of supporting a family member with a chronic illness, disability, or age-related condition,” said Tony Green, Director of DDD.&nbsp;“Supporting a loved one can involve constantly rearranging your schedule or learning to do a range of unknown and complex activities. Remember to set aside time to recharge, guilt-free. Utilize a respite service and allow yourself time for personal care or rest to restore your stamina, energy, and positivity.”

In Nebraska, around 312,000 individuals provide care to a family member or friend. Caregivers help their loved ones manage medical care, medicines, meal preparation, eating, bathing, home maintenance, feeding, dressing, chores, finances, grocery shopping, transportation and more. Even if a loved one does not live close, they can still provide valuable care by calling to check in, ordering supplies, assisting with scheduling appointments, and more to tend to their loved one’s unique needs.

Several caregivers work full or part-time jobs, which may lead to moments of feeling overwhelmed because of their “double duty.” In 2024,&nbsp;an estimated 31 percent of caregivers care for both a child at home and an adult.&nbsp;An estimated 62 percent of caregivers worked while also providing ongoing care to a loved one or friend. Caregivers may have to take time away from their jobs due to being in the role of a caregiver and meeting the immediate needs of the care recipient. Employees covered under the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) may be able to take up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave a year to care for relatives.

Nebraska Revised Statutes § 77-3163 to 77-3166 outlines the tax credits for those providing care to family members with additional needs. Family Caregivers Strengthen Nebraska Homes and Communities

NORTH PLATTE, Neb.&nbsp; —&nbsp; Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted local alcohol compliance checks in Keith County.

During the afternoon hours of Sunday Nov. 16, 2025, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Keith County. In total, 10 businesses were checked. Of those businesses, eight refused to sell alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 80 percent. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID. One of the businesses that sold were also cited for allowing a minor to sell.

The businesses included convenience stores, restaurants, bars and liquor stores. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.

This project was funded (100 percent, $427,899) by the Region II Human Services Substance Use Prevention &amp; Treatment Block Grant (1B08TI088119-01) through SAMHSA, contracted through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Behavioral Health.

 </figure>NORTH PLATTE, Neb.&nbsp; —&nbsp; Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol conducted local alcohol compliance checks in Keith County.During the afternoon hours of Sunday Nov. 16, 2025, investigators conducted alcohol compliance checks in Keith County. In total, 10 businesses were checked. Of those businesses, eight refused to sell alcohol to a minor for a compliance rate of 80 percent. All of the businesses checked the minor’s ID. One of the businesses that sold were also cited for allowing a minor to sell.The businesses included convenience stores, restaurants, bars and liquor stores. Businesses that sell alcohol to a minor are referred to the Nebraska Liquor Control Commission. Clerks who sell alcohol to a minor are cited for procuring alcohol for a minor.This project was funded (100 percent, $427,899) by the Region II Human Services Substance Use Prevention &amp; Treatment Block Grant (1B08TI088119-01) through SAMHSA, contracted through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, Division of Behavioral Health.

Alcohol Compliance Checks Held in Keith County

Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD) is excited to announce the official launch of its new Maternal Self-Monitoring Blood Pressure (SMBP) Program, beginning Tuesday, Nov. 25, at the PPHD clinic in Scottsbluff. This free, walk-in program is designed to empower pregnant and postpartum mothers with the tools and confidence to monitor their blood pressure at home—an important step in preventing complications and improving maternal health outcomes.

“Elevated blood pressure can be a warning sign for serious pregnancy-related complications,” said Dez Brandt, Maternal and Child Health Program Manager at PPHD. “By equipping moms with the knowledge and tools to check their blood pressure at home, we’re helping them better understand their health, recognize when something isn’t right and seek care early.”

PPHD has partnered closely with hospitals and clinics across the Panhandle to introduce this resource and ensure seamless coordination with healthcare providers. The program provides education and support that complement, rather than replace, routine prenatal and postpartum care.

“Keeping moms healthy keeps babies healthy,” Brandt said. “This program is another step toward strengthening maternal health support in our rural communities.”

-Free blood pressure cuff and education: Every participant receives a complimentary home blood pressure monitor along with personalized guidance on how to use it correctly and interpret their readings.

-Walk-in access, no referral needed: Pregnant or postpartum mothers may visit the clinic Tuesday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m. at 18 W. 16th Street in Scottsbluff (behind Sam &amp;amp; Louie’s).

-Coordinated communication with providers: Any concerning or urgent readings will be shared directly with the patient’s provider based on notification plans set with each hospital and clinic.

-Quarterly check-ins: PPHD will host regular touchpoints with healthcare partners to collaborate on maternal health initiatives and ensure clear communication.

-Expert-informed education: The program is developed in partnership with the American Heart Association and the Nebraska DHHS Cardiovascular Health Team to ensure all materials align with the latest evidence-based practices.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is seeking information on the illegal shooting and wanton waste of a white-tailed buck in southeastern Arthur County.

The deer was shot on Nov. 11 or 12 south of Bucktail Lake.

People are encouraged to send information to Conservation Officer Hunter Lee at 308-280-4320. Kimball, Neb. — The Kimball Police Department has released details on three separate child-abuse-related arrests over the past week, outlining unrelated incidents investigated between November 15th and November 21st.

November 15:
Officers responded to a report of an assault in the 700 block of Chestnut Street. Following an investigation, police say probable cause was established to arrest 38-year-old Steven Nunley on a charge of child abuse. Officers attempted to contact Nunley at his residence, and after obtaining a search warrant, he exited the home and was taken into custody without incident. The Kimball County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

November 19:
Kimball officers responded to a report of child abuse in the 400 block of South Oak Street. A forensic interview conducted with Capstone in Gering and a joint response with DHHS led to the arrests of 31-year-old Becki Russi and 29-year-old Christopher Stewart. Russi faces three counts of child abuse; Stewart faces two. Both were arrested on scene. The Kimball County Sheriff’s Office assisted.

November 21:
Police opened an investigation involving suspected child sexual abuse material. Following the investigation, officers say they established probable cause to arrest 45-year-old Kenny Rogers. Rogers is charged under Nebraska Revised Statute 28-1803 with possession or receipt of child sexual abuse material.

In each case, the department noted that information is preliminary and may change as investigations continue. No additional details will be released to protect the integrity of the ongoing cases.

All individuals are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
