Chadron Community Hospital Offers 20% Discount on Patient Balances Paid in Full During May

On 5/1/2025 at approximately 3:46 PM, the Alliance Police Department responded to a report of a juvenile possibly in possession of a firearm near Alliance Middle School. Officers arrived quickly and located the juvenile near 12th Street and Laramie Avenue. The item in question was determined to be an&nbsp;Orbeez-style gel toy gun, not a real firearm. The toy was confiscated, and officers spoke with the juvenile at length about the seriousness of the situation — especially the dangers of carrying or displaying anything resembling a weapon near a school.

Parents and Guardians:&nbsp;We ask for your help in reminding kids that&nbsp;toy guns can easily be mistaken for real weapons, especially from a distance or in fast-moving situations. Even though this was a toy, the response was treated as if it could have been a real threat — because safety will always be our top priority. In today’s world, there is zero tolerance for any item that causes alarm on or near school grounds. What may seem like a harmless toy can quickly escalate into a very serious situation. Alliance police respond to incident near Alliance Middle School

LINCOLN, NEB. – Despite a $2 billion decline from 2022, Nebraska’s agricultural exports totaled $7.9 billion in 2023, marking the third-highest export year on record. That’s according to a Nebraska Farm Bureau’s annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nefb.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/NEAgriculture-InternationalTrade_2023_Proof2.pdf" target="_blank">Agriculture and International Trade Report</a>&nbsp;released today.

The report, prepared by economist Jay Rempe of Rolling Prairie Economics, provides a comprehensive look at how global markets are driving and challenging the economic future of Nebraska’s farm and ranch families. According to the report, trade remains a foundational pillar of Nebraska’s agriculture-driven economy.

“Our state ranks fifth in the nation for agricultural exports, and we lead the country in beef exports. Yet, the story behind the numbers is about the Nebraska farm families whose livelihoods depend on access to global markets,” said Mark McHargue, president of Nebraska Farm Bureau. “When trade thrives, Nebraska thrives. That’s why it’s critical that we push for new trade agreements and work to eliminate barriers that unfairly limit our access to overseas markets.”

The report, released annually since 2017, examines the most recent data provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), sourced from the year 2023 and includes county-level estimates showing the importance of trade at the grassroots level. Cuming and Platte Counties led the state in total agricultural export value, each exceeding $200 million, while Phelps County topped the list for per-farm export value at an estimated $474,832. Counties like Kearney, Fillmore, and Boone also ranked among the highest per-farm export values, a reflection of the size, productivity, and diversity of their farming operations.

“Trade translates directly to income for farm and ranch families,” said Rempe. “Whether it's corn from Dawson County, soybeans from York County, or beef from the Sandhills, the ability to sell these products overseas can make the difference between a good year and a tough one for many Nebraska producers.”

According to the report, soybeans, corn, and beef remained solidly entrenched as Nebraska’s top agricultural exports, accounting for nearly two-thirds of total exports. Nebraska ranked first in the nation for beef exports at $1.59 billion. The state ranked third in corn exports and seventh in soybeans. Exports of pork and soybean meal were among the few that increased in value, rising 3% and 12%, respectively.

While commodity prices and increased global competition from countries like Brazil contributed to export declines, Nebraska producers remain competitive and resilient. However, trade uncertainty and tariffs continue to pose significant challenges.

Floyd’s Truck Center Acquires Nebraska Truck Center

“He (Pope Francis) is very close to us,” said Father Gabriel Romanelli. “All the time he called us throughout this war – this horrible war – for more than a year and a half, he would call for peace and send his blessings to all of Gaza’s people.”

Every day since the beginning of the war in Palestine 18 months ago, the Pope rang the Holy Family Church in Gaza City around 8 pm. Father Romanelli is the pastor of Gaza's only Catholic parish. On most days, the call lasted about 15 minutes, during which the Pope would speak with the church leaders and some of the Palestinians sheltering at the church. His final call, on the Saturday before Easter, lasted less than a minute.

Last week the world was saddened by the death of Pope Francis.

Why has this Pope moved the world in ways no other has? Even those of us who are not Catholic watched his actions and read his messages.

Elected pontiff in 2013, Pope Francis had been archbishop in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He represented a region that was not Europe or an area formerly controlled by the Roman Empire, and he saw the world through a different lens. As a Jesuit, he focused on the poor and marginalized. He was concerned about violence throughout the world and about the effects of climate change, especially on third-world nations.

I remember Christmas messages where Pope Francis reminded us that the Son of God was an outcast who faced rejection and lived in poverty. He reached out to the poor, the forgotten, the invisible. He talked about Joseph, Mary, and their baby Jesus fleeing to Egypt. Migrants, refugees.

This week, as I followed stories about Pope Francis, I learned that his family was also migrants, refugees. His grandparents and father, devout Catholics, fled from Italy under the rise of Mussolini's Fascist regime.

According to the New York Times obituary, he organized food kitchens, tripled the number of priests assigned to the slums, and built schools and drug rehabilitation centers during Argentina's 2001-02 economic crisis. Before every Easter, he visited prison inmates, AIDS patients or older people, a practice he continued during his papacy. We've all seen pictures of him washing feet during Holy Week.

Since I am not a Catholic, I cannot speak to the changes in the church under Pope Francis. But I am a member of the Alliance Community/Poverty Task Force. I have felt his nudges (sometimes elbows) as we work to provide assistance to the people in our community who do not have enough resources to support themselves. The Pope appealed to us all to "use the resources available to help the needy, to fight hunger, and to encourage initiatives that promote development."

His Easter, 2025, message, which Pope Francis was unable to personally deliver, included prayers for these war-torn nations: Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, western Balkans, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan; and Myanmar after their devastating earthquake. His Christmas message included prayers for these regions, as well as the African nations whose people were dying of a measles outbreak.

"What a great thirst for death, for killing, we witness each day in the many conflicts raging in different parts of our world? How much violence we see, often even within families, directed at women and children? How much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized, and migrants?"

Marriages, divorces February & March 2025 

CHADRON, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Labor, in partnership with Nebraska VR, Dawes County Veterans Service Office, and the Hot Springs, S.D., VA, will host a Hiring Event and Veterans Stand Down on Thursday, May 29.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dawes County Fairgrounds, 300 E. Norfolk Ave., in Chadron. The hiring portion will run from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Stand Down will offer essential supplies for veterans, including blankets, coats, duffle bags and more, provided by the Hot Springs VA. A variety of support resources will also be available, such as caregiver support, homeless services, suicide prevention, intimate partner violence assistance, and veterans justice outreach.

 </figure>CHADRON, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Labor, in partnership with Nebraska VR, Dawes County Veterans Service Office, and the Hot Springs, S.D., VA, will host a Hiring Event and Veterans Stand Down on Thursday, May 29.The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dawes County Fairgrounds, 300 E. Norfolk Ave., in Chadron. The hiring portion will run from 1 to 3 p.m.The Stand Down will offer essential supplies for veterans, including blankets, coats, duffle bags and more, provided by the Hot Springs VA. A variety of support resources will also be available, such as caregiver support, homeless services, suicide prevention, intimate partner violence assistance, and veterans justice outreach.

On April 28, 2025 at 8:15 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department was notified of a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision with suspected injuries at the intersection of Avenue B and South Beltline Highway West.

 Investigation discovered a Lincoln SUV was Westbound on South Belt Highway West occupied by five and a Ford SUV occupied by two was Southbound on Avenue B. 

The Ford SUV failed to stop at the Stop sign and entered the intersection, striking the Lincoln in the passenger side of the vehicle. This caused the Lincoln to spin and strike a sign in the median of South Beltline then came to rest in the Eastbound lanes.

 Driver of the Lincoln was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained an injury to the head. Three juvenile passengers in the back of the Lincoln SUV reported injuries to abdomen and pelvis as well as neck injury. One of the passengers injured was not wearing a seatbelt. 

The driver and juvenile passengers were transported by Regional West Ambulance to Regional West Medical Center for treatment. The driver and passenger of the Ford SUV reported no injuries. 

The driver Elizabeth Johnson, 45 of Gering, was cited for Stop Sign Violation and No Valid Registration. 

Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to disabling damages. The intersection of Avenue B and South Beltline Highway West was closed for about one hour for the investigation and clearing the roadway of debris.

Scottsbluff Police Department were assisted by Scottsbluff Fire Department and Regional West Ambulance.

Two Arrested After Stolen Pickup, Stolen Guns Recovered in Panhandle Pursuit   

ALLIANCE, Neb. — The Alliance High School senior class of 2025 will participate in the annual “Passing of the Bulldog” ceremony on Wednesday, April 30, at Bulldog Stadium.

The event begins at 10:30 a.m. and invites both senior and kindergarten parents to attend. During the ceremony, seniors will symbolically pass down the Bulldog spirit to the district’s current kindergarten students.

Kindergarteners will be transported by bus from Emerson Elementary to the football field and will return following the conclusion of the activity.

HOT SPRINGS, SD&nbsp;– Cave tours through Wind Cave are suspended until an elevator transformer can be replaced. The transformer malfunctioned Sunday afternoon, April 27. It is currently unknown how long the replacement will take or when tours will resume.

In the interim, rangers will be offering virtual tours of the Natural Entrance Tour using Lidar technology. Please check the park website for updated program times. This virtual tour is an excellent option for individuals with mobility issues to experience the cave.

Additionally, the park has new exhibits in the visitor center that tell the story of this land and the people who have lived on it. The park visitor center is open from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with extended hours as summer approaches.

Transformer malfunction shuts down tours at Wind Cave near Hot Springs, SD

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.&nbsp; -﻿&nbsp;Western&nbsp;Nebraska&nbsp;Community&nbsp;College&nbsp;is pleased to&nbsp;announce that Dr. Lisa Blair has been promoted to the Vice President of Academic Affairs.

Blair joined&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;in 2024 as the Dean of Instruction, and has a long career in higher education with roles in the classroom and in administrative roles. Prior to&nbsp;WNCC, she was the vice president of academic advancement at Northwest Kansas Technical&nbsp;College&nbsp;for one year, and the Dean of Academic Advancement for two years.

She also has experience at Washburn Institute of Technology, Grantham University, Southern Illinois University, Southeast Missouri State University, Northeastern Junior&nbsp;College, and Emporia State University.

"We are very excited to add Dr. Blair to our Leadership team,"&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;President Greg Dart said. "She brings a wealth of administrative and teaching experience to the role and I value her collaborative working approach to leadership."

WNCC&nbsp;has also transitioned Dr. Grant Wilson to the Vice President of Enrollment Management &amp; Student Services. Dr. Wilson has been serving as the Vice President of Educational Services and his current role since 2021.

School officials called the experience both educational and inspiring, thanking courthouse staff for their time, hospitality, and commitment to civic education.

Bryan Slone, a Gering native and president of the Nebraska Chamber of Commerce &amp; Industry will deliver the commencement address. He has served as the president since May 2018. Previously, Slone spent more than three decades as an attorney and accountant. In the 1980s, he spent time in Washington D.C., where he was a legal advisor to the IRS and a staff member under former U.S. Representative Hal Daub an helped draft the 1986 federal tax law.

Slone holds a law degree from the University of Nebraska College of Law and a bachelor's degree in business administration from UNL.

The commencement ceremony is scheduled for 10 a.m. in Cougar Palace. WNCC will hold two additional ceremonies, starting with the Nurse Pinning on Friday, May 9 at 5:30 p.m. in Cougar Palace. The Adult Education graduation is set for 2 p.m., May 10, in the Judy Chaloupka Theater.

&nbsp; As everyone is likely aware, a tornado came through part of our service territory yesterday afternoon. We are seeing significant damage in the Bingham area and North of Ashby, with dozens of poles on the ground and conductor either down or badly twisted up. We currently have our crews out patrolling line to assess the damage, and they are beginning to repair the known issues. Mutual aid from Roosevelt Public Power District is also on their way to lend a hand.

If you see any downed poles or lines, it is very important to stay clear of them. Just because they are down, does not guarantee they are de-energized. We also ask that you help us by reporting any damage you see by calling our office at 308-762-1311. If your power goes out from now going forward, please notify us as we may not be aware of your area having problems.

PREMA continues to restore power following tornado near Bingham, Ashby area

FORT ROBINSON STATE PARK, Neb. – Post Playhouse, a nonprofit professional summer theatre based at historic Fort Robinson State Park, is proud to announce the purchase of a home in nearby Crawford, Nebraska, to house professional company members during its annual summer season. Thanks to the generous support of donors, including lead gifts from two community members, the Peter Kiewit Foundation, and the Dawes County Travel Board, the home is undergoing renovations and will be ready for the 2025 season.

“This new home is a vital investment in our future,” said Dewayne Barrett, Post Playhouse’s Artistic Director. “This home ensures our ability to provide comfortable, professional accommodations for our artists and opens the door to future growth.”

Each summer, the Post Playhouse brings nearly 40 theatre and music professionals from across the country to live and work in northwest Nebraska, offering high-quality Broadway-style performances. While the Post Playhouse has a longstanding partnership with Fort Robinson to provide housing for a portion of the company, those spaces are at full capacity, making additional housing in Crawford essential for continuing to attract top-notch, national talent.

The Post Playhouse is grateful to residents of Crawford, who have helped ensure each summer season is a success by providing rental housing for company members. The addition of this newhome will complement that ongoing support and help reduce the annual burden of sourcing multiple rentals in a tight housing market.

Post Playhouse expands housing to support summer company

Earth Day came and went Tuesday, April 22. None of the mainstream radio stations or websites I visited that day lumped the observance with the top news, just a run of the mill feature story here or there if you dug to the next level. Environmental coverage hums 24/7 for anyone willing to take even a cursory look. The key is to constantly build awareness and adopt ways to be proactive.

Consumers can choose to support sustainable and environmentally friendly products and companies while also considering the best options for their own health and well being. Packaging may tout how much of the container is from recycled materials or if renewable energy powers the facility, for example. What about the ingredients in that lotion you are slathering all over or the tasty snack the children crave with several nearly unpronounceable names? Of course, people need to decide whether the consumer reports for environmental considerations are reputable. If the source you decide to consult passes muster then the data is there to make sound decisions. Can I find a healthier alternative while shopping locally? Does the fact that contaminants are below legal levels yet still considered unhealthy by some experts matter to me?

Environmentally responsible corporations should be rewarded by businesses from like-minded consumers. Local stewards of the land should be the first choice whenever we can support our friends and neighbors who are usually more than happy to share how they raise chickens or bake gluten free bread.

Buying what is good for us can be good for the Earth. If enough people move that direction perhaps the headline next Earth Day will tell about how many more businesses voluntarily sell what is good for the Earth.

None of the mainstream radio stations or websites I visited that day lumped the observance with the top news, just a run of the mill feature story here or there if you dug to the next level. Environmental coverage hums 24/7 for anyone willing to take even a cursory look. KAB: Determining Environmental Health From The Sum Of The Parts

BINGHAM, Neb. — A BNSF train was nearly completely derailed Sunday evening after being struck by a giant wedge tornado near Highway 2, just east of Bingham.

Nebraska State Patrol troopers responded to the scene and worked to keep the public safe from downed power lines. Panhandle Rural Electric Membership Association crews worked to restore power in the area.

A BNSF spokesperson told Panhandle Post, "Cleanup operations are currently underway, and we anticipate reopening one track by midmorning on Monday. "
