That’s a good question, given it costs $2 to buy a Mega Millions lottery ticket that could pay off with an estimated $810 million prize —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/iowa-d074aec16d0f17eba2cc51c814faa99e">the nation's fourth-largest jackpot</a>&nbsp;— after the game’s next drawing Tuesday night.

To start with, your&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/north-america-lottery-us-news-ap-top-news-ia-state-wire-b5572da1e5d74f6e974bea45c707b5cb">chance of winning the grand prize</a>&nbsp;is minuscule, at one in 302.5 million. You have better odds of a smaller payoff, such as winning $1 million for matching five regular numbers but missing the Mega Ball. But even that is one in 12.6 million. To put that in perspective, your chance of dying in a car crash — something to consider as you drive to the mini-mart for a lottery ticket — is around one in 101 over a lifetime, according to the nonprofit National Safety Council.

As lottery officials note, players should think of their $2 bet as a chance to dream while accepting the reality they likely won’t be entering a new income tax bracket Tuesday night.

Still a fortune, but a smaller fortune. That also doesn’t account for the possibility that someone else will match the winning numbers, meaning they would need to divide even those smaller winnings in half or more, depending on the number of lucky players.

To put that in perspective, consider that the median U.S. household income in 2020 was $67,500, meaning a lifetime of work at that rate would be less than 1% of even the smaller jackpot after taxes.

But sadly, if you had won that same prize a year ago, before&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-economy-prices-consumer-74e1a5c9bced40460e4079f62e980095">the nation endured a year with an inflation rate of about 9%</a>, your buying power would have been significantly higher.

Eventually, though the reason the grand prize&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-c750b32664d0b02d318ae8030f671952">has grown so large</a>&nbsp;is because no one has matched all six numbers since April. That's 28 consecutive drawings without someone hitting the jackpot.

With so many people playing now that the potential top prize is so large, it becomes increasingly likely that someone or multiple players will finally end that streak. Still, past prizes have grown larger, as the biggest payday was a $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot won in 2016.

Mega Millions is played in 45 states as well as Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The game is overseen by state lottery officials.

Russell announced that Jeremy Davis, 45, was sentenced July 22, 2022 in federal court in Omaha, Nebraska, for distribution of 50 grams or more of methamphetamine.&nbsp; United States District Judge Robert F. Rossiter Jr. sentenced Davis to 70 months’ imprisonment. There is no parole in the federal system.&nbsp; After his release from prison, he will begin a four-year term of supervised release.

The WING Task Force used a confidential informant to purchase methamphetamine from Davis.&nbsp; On March 5, 2020, the confidential informant purchased 28 grams of methamphetamine from Davis.&nbsp; On March 9, 2020, the same confidential informant also purchased 61 grams of methamphetamine from Davis.

This case was investigated by the Nebraska State Patrol and the WING Task Force.&nbsp; WING is the Western Nebraska Intelligence Narcotics Group and includes the Nebraska State Patrol, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Sidney Police Department, Alliance Police Department, Gering Police Department, and Scottsbluff Police Department.

Oshkosh man sentenced to federal prison for selling meth

CHADRON – Pioneer photographer Fred W. Farrar chronicled the Black Hills from the turn of the 20th&nbsp;century through the 1930s. An exhibit that opened in July at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center consists of 30 of 39 pieces displayed in the 1980s in a collection organized by the late Dr. Allen Shepherd, a former CSC History Professor, and the late Mary Farrar, daughter of Farrar.

Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m.-noon and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. and Friday 10 a.m.-noon. The exhibit will be open until Dec. 15.

Farrar leaves a legacy of images of life in the Black Hills around the turn of the century. He took photos of people, parties, babies, weddings, and scenery. His photos include parades, fairs, the circus, and the largest Rapid City event of the year from 1898 to 1910, Stockmen’s Days.

According to Shepherd and Mary Farrar, current generations owe a considerable debt to roving photographers like Farrar. With a mobile dark room, camera, and glass plate negatives, they ventured into the wilderness, photographed a cross-section of his era, and often received little remuneration.

Farrar, along with others, provided an invaluable service by capturing images of space and time which no conventional historian could. Part professional and part amateur, part artist and part historian, part user of glass plates and the new film negatives. His portraits range from local historical figures to unidentified residents. Some of the most powerful images are unknown subjects and many capture the essence of the era and the human experience, both joyful and tragic, according to Shepherd and Mary Farrar.

Farrar was born in 1885 in Iowa and came to Rapid City with his family when he was two. In addition to photography, he enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, horses, music, and gunsmithing. He attended Rapid City High School and the South Dakota School of Mines. He died in 1975 at the age of 90 in Chadron and was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City.

He had five sons, and one daughter, Mary, who preserved the collection for many years, who died in 2015. Farrar’s granddaughter, Dede Farrar, inherited the collection of more than 2,500 negatives, photographs, and ephemera and donated it to the Minnilusa Historical Association and Pioneer Collection at The Journey Museum in Rapid City in 2017.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="http://www.journeymuseum.org/visit" target="_blank">http://www.journeymuseum.org</a>

Sandoz Center exhibit features pioneer photographer

An Oregon, Missouri teenager drowned in the Missouri River this weekend
after coming to the aid of his brother.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reports 18-year-old Alexander
Harris went under the water and didn't resurface after coming to the aid of a younger man struggling in the water.

The patrol reports Harris and the other boy were swimming
in the Missouri River Saturday afternoon about a half mile north of Payne’s
Landing in Holt County.

A Facebook post from the family stated Harris kept his younger brother afloat until his mother could save him.

The Holt County Coroner pronounced Harris dead at the scene.

As a physician with 45 years of practice, I’ve seen my share of diseases. I have usually been on the physician side of the diagnosis-treatment paradigm. However, knowing the rationale for diagnostic screening tests, I fortunately did not shirk my own.

Testing too much or too frequently leads to insignificant findings that may have no long-term consequences yet create worry and further testing. Too often, this can lead to surgery that does not save lives but carries pain, disability, unnecessary expense, and sometimes post-op infection that occasionally is fatal. Knowing what and when to test is a crucial conversation to have with your doctor.

Although annual prostate-specific antigen, or PSA testing is no longer recommended, periodic testing may raise suspicion if a rising pattern is seen. As luck would have it, this turned out to be my dilemma, so I retested six months later, and when my PSA continued to climb, I went in for a biopsy. The biopsy showed a very aggressive type of cancer, the type that metastasizes very quickly to bone. Surgery was scheduled and computed tomography or CT scans ordered to help with staging my surgery.

Even though I had had three colonoscopies in the preceding 25 years, the CT scan showed a tumor inside my colon that was only about one millimeter from breaking through the wall and spreading to other organs. An extra year of procrastinating would almost certainly have found me with two cancers that would have already spread. Catching them early, surgery was curative, and I was one of the lucky ones who did not have to undergo months of radiation or chemotherapy.

So, please, have this discussion with your doctor, and review the American Cancer Society’s screening guidelines, as these vary with age, family history, and your unique set of risk factors. Go to www.cancer.org and be proactive. Catch it early and you too can go on enjoying life with your family for years to come.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Patients enrolled in South Dakota's medical marijuana program will have their first opportunity to buy cannabis from a state-licensed facility next week.

It has been a year and a-half since state voters overwhelmingly approved medical marijuana. The co-owner of one dispensary, United Rd. in Hartford, says the business has secured the first initial inventory available to state-run stores and the showroom is ready for customers.

The building was created with security in mind, said co-owner B.J. Olson.

“We started with a vault and then built the building around the vault. We have eight inch poured concrete walls, reinforced with rebar,” Olson said.

The business is a Unity Rd. franchise,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.keloland.com/news/your-money-matters/1st-licensed-marijuana-dispensary-opening-next-week/">KELO-TV</a>&nbsp;reported.

“The beauty of partnering with someone already established that has a plan in place is that we obtained the play book,” co-owner Adam Jorgensen said. “This is stuff that we don’t have the ability to go out and procure on our own. This is part of the design team that comes specifically with our partnership with Unity Rd.”

Their franchise partnership means all their display tables, cases and security devices in the building are all the same as other Unity Rd. locations across the country.

Medical marijuana so far has only been available on tribal land in South Dakota, but next Wednesday Unity Rd. will be the first state-licensed dispensary to offer cannabis.

State-licensed medical marijuana store opens next week in South Dakota

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A man who was hiking on an unmarked trail in southwestern South Dakota that was featured in a social media challenge died when he and another hiker ran out of water, authorities said Thursday.

The Pennington County Sheriff's Office said 22-year-old Maxwell Right, of St. Louis, was hiking in Badlands National Park Wednesday when he collapsed and died of suspected dehydration and exposure.

A 21-year-old man from Missouri who was hiking with Right was flown to a Rapid City hospital, where he was placed under observation for exposure and dehydration. The weather in the park has approached 100 degrees most of the week.

Sheriff's office spokeswoman Helene Duhamel said she didn't know about the specifics of the challenge and would rather not advertise it “but clearly it's out there.” Pennington County has put out numerous public service announcements warning hikers to be prepared for the elements and stay on marked trails, she said.

“We've said many times, you have to have enough water, water, water," Duhamel said. "But I don’t think people understand and they underestimate the heat, especially in the Badlands.”

WIND CAVE NATIONAL PARK, S.D. – Darrell Red Cloud, a graduate of the Oglala Lakota College and great-great grandson of Chief Red Cloud, will present a one-hour talk on Lakota culture Saturday, July 30. This free talk will be given at the Wind Cave National Park Elk Mountain Campground Amphitheater beginning at 9 p.m.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

KEARNEY, Neb.-An Indiana man is in jail in Buffalo County after deputies discovered narcotics in his vehicle during a traffic stop.

According to Kearney police, officers conducted a traffic stop on a speeding 2021 Kia Forte near mile marker 277 on Interstate 80.

Officers made contact with the driver and lone occupant of the vehicle Benjamin Rodway, 52, of Jefferson, Indiana.

During the stop, police said officers observed several indicators of criminal activity and a police service dog was deployed to do a perimeter search of the vehicle.

Following an alert by the K9, officers searched the vehicle and located approximately 10.5 pounds of marijuana and a small amount of LSD inside the vehicle.

Rodway was arrested and jailed at the Buffalo County Jail on suspicion of felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and other related drug charges.

Shortly after 10:30 p.m on July 21, a Scotts Bluff County Deputy attempted a traffic stop on Highland Road in eastern Scotts Bluff County.&nbsp;

 This led to a pursuit, and the driver abandoned the vehicle south of Minatare and fled on foot. &nbsp;

Officers recovered a loaded handgun near the vehicle, and items inside indicating Lance Gibbons was the driver. &nbsp;

Multiple agencies responded and searched the area for several hours unsuccessfully.&nbsp;

Gibbons has a history of flight to avoid arrest and weapons possession.

Agencies involved include the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Scottsbluff, Gering, and Minatare Police Departments, the Nebraska State Patrol, and the Morrill County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp; &nbsp;

On July 21 at 9:42 a.m. the Scotts Bluff County Communications Center received a report of a single vehicle rollover south of Highway 92 on County Road 26.

20-year-old Caitlyn Charles of Scottsbluff was driving a 1998 Toyota that left the roadway and rolled.

Charles was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

Valley Ambulance transported Charles to Regional West Medical Center where she was being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.   

"Excessive speed is a possible contributing factor, no drug or alcohol use is suspected," Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Mark Overman said. 

Minatare Police Department, Nebraska State Patrol and the Gering Fire Department assisted with this accident.

CHADRON – Several Chadron State College departments collaborated to provide bookmarks to young students involved in western Nebraska libraries’ summer reading program, Oceans of Possibilities.

Christine Fullerton, public services librarian with CSC’s King Library, said the opportunity to distribute the bookmarks to Panhandle libraries at their annual spring meeting was a great way to show appreciation and support for the region's public libraries. The bookmarks were designed by College Relations and funded by Academic Affairs, Enrollment Management, and College Relations.

“It is always rewarding when I get to interact with my public library colleagues,” Fullerton said.

Cindy Osborne with the Western Library System said children, young adults, and adults appreciated the CSC’s&nbsp;support of young readers.

“The bookmarks are as special as they are cute and practical for readers, and they fit the Oceans of Possibilities theme. It expanded our partnerships. People were impressed that CSC was interested in the Summer Reading Program and the children in western Nebraska to the extent they made and provided the bookmarks,” Osborne said. “This collaboration with CSC is unique.&nbsp;We will never know what possibilities it will provide.&nbsp;Maybe in 10 years, a first-year student at CSC will bring their bookmark with them.”

Teri Faimon, Stratton Public Library director, said children were pleased with the magnetic bookmarks in the shape of a narwhal.

Jennifer Holthus with the Grant County Library in Hyannis said summer readers have enjoyed the CSC bookmarks.&nbsp;

“In preparing the bags, we had help from the seventh graders at Saint Agnes Academy and some of their comments included ‘These are so cool,’ and ‘Awesome.’&nbsp; What a wonderful way to add more joy to our Summer Reading Programs,” Horn said.

OGLALA, S.D. (AP) — Officials say a wildfire that started earlier this week west of Oglala has burned about 11 square miles and is 40% contained.

 The fire began near Prairie Wind Casino on Tuesday evening and moved southeast. 

Oglala Sioux president Kevin Killer says local groups from the tribe, such as the Emergency Management Department, focused on structural protection while the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs’ Wildland Fire Management focused on putting out the fire. 

Two air tankers were dispatched to the area. 

State fire meteorologist Darren Clabo said weather conditions, including 40 mph winds, high temperatures and low humidity, most likely contributed to the fire.

The Mega Millions jackpot starts at $20 million and continues to grow each drawing until it is won. There have been 27 consecutive Mega Millions drawings since April 19 without a jackpot winner.

The Nebraska Lottery began offering Mega Millions in March of 2010. The largest Mega Millions jackpot on record occurred in October 2018 when one ticket was sold in South Carolina for a $1.537 billion jackpot.

Mega Millions jackpot increases for Friday drawing

Spend some time this summer in Nebraska’s state parks. During August, a variety of events are planned for those interested in history, conservation, nature and just having a good time. Here are several examples:

Merritt Reservoir SRA to host Spectacular Stars, Magnificent Moths Nocturnal Insects

Uncover the fantastic world of nighttime insects at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, renowned for its dark skies, on Aug. 4.

The program Spectacular Stars, Magnificent Moths Nocturnal Insects will introduce visitors to the process of “moth lighting.”

In moth lighting, a large bright light bulb and white bed sheet are set up. Moths are attracted to the light and the bed sheet, as a background, will help experts identify different species. Moths will be captured, photographed, then released. Come out and see how many species are captured.

The program starts at 3 p.m., with moth lighting beginning at 8:30 p.m. Meet at the Snake River Shelter.

A Nebraska vehicle park entry permit is required.

Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area invites stargazers to bring a blanket and lie beneath the stars Aug. 27 during its Night Sky program.

The program, from 8:30-9:30 p.m. Mountain time, will begin at the Nature Center. Visitors can explore constellations, mythology and much more. They will have an opportunity to watch the Perseids meteor shower, one of the best meteors showers of the year.

The event is free, but a Nebraska vehicle park entry permit is required.

Learn about the history of dolls Aug. 5-31 at Arbor Lodge State Historical Park. Special doll collections will be on display throughout the mansion.

The display will be open 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.

A Doll Tea Party is scheduled for Aug. 14 from 11 a.m.- 2 p.m. in the lodge’s sunroom. Feel free to bring a favorite doll or stuffed animal to also enjoy the event. The tea will include small savories as well as hot and cold brewed tea. Reservations are required as space is limited. Tickets are $20.
