OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts is defending his decision to send state patrol troopers to the U.S.-Mexico border at the request of fellow Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas. 

Ricketts also is using it as an opportunity to rail against the Biden administration. 

Ricketts has said he'll send 25 troopers to Del Rio, Texas, for a deployment to last as long as 16 days. 

The troopers will partner with the Texas Department of Public Safety. 

It's not clear what they’ll be doing or how much the mission will cost.

Alliance Public Library celebrates children's garden

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — New data released Wednesday shows that Nebraska’s unemployment rate remained one of the lowest in the country as it fell even lower in May. 

The state’s 2.6% unemployment rate tied with Vermont for the second-lowest rate in the nation, behind only New Hampshire’s 2.5% unemployment.

East Point Horspice to hold open house

CHADRON – Chadron State College student and military veteran JR Shaffner knew he had to do something when he lost six friends and fellow veterans to suicide. Shaffner is the Assistant Director of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.castingvets.org/" target="_blank">Casting Vets</a>, a non-profit agency, in Hot Springs, South Dakota, that helps military veterans recover from the aftermath of combat. Shaffner, a Psychology major, has earned 10 internship credit hours with Casting Vets. After graduating from CSC in 2022, he plans to earn his master’s degree and doctorate to continue to help with the issue of veteran suicide.

Casting Vets was founded by Julius Johnson in 2018, a year after he was a patient at the Black Hills Veteran’s Administration (VA) hospital. The goal of Casting Vets is to assist veterans recovering from PTSD, drug addiction, and homelessness. This includes veterans in the Transition House, a 90-day program where they work and check in regularly with the VA after they are released from the domiciliary.

“I found fishing to be a release and helpful to my recovery,” Johnson said.

"When I met JJ and he saw my passion for fishing and helping fellow veterans, he asked me to come on board with Casting Vets," Shaffner said. “When fishing worked for me and helped my PTSD, I thought, ‘Why wouldn’t this work for other vets? Let’s get them out in the fresh air away from dark thoughts.' A lot of them have never fished before, so sometimes it’s like watching a little kid catch their first fish. Taking veterans out to fish is my own therapy. I know for however long they are with me they are OK and won’t be part of the 22.”

National statistics indicate that an average of 22 veterans complete suicide every 24 hours, according to Shaffner. Casting Vets is part of a South Dakota suicide prevention coalition established by the VA.

“I wanted to get involved in a solution,” he said. “Based on our research, about 1,200 veterans live in the Black Hills. We want to reach out to them so they know about Casting Vets.”

Shaffner and Johnson rely on an all-volunteer staff and advisory board to publicize and provide their services.

Starting May 13, veterans were able to fish at Angostura State Park from a donated boat. Shaffner also teaches vets how to fish from banks of local streams. In 2020, Casting Vets began to include ice fishing and were featured on a Joey Cruise&nbsp;<a href="file:///C:/Users/tcook/OneDrive%20-%20Chadron%20State%20College/News%202021/iframe%20width=%22560%22%20height=%22315%22%20src=%22https:/www.youtube.com/embed/NMIpqDQB70U%3fstart=988%22%20title=%22YouTube%20video%20player%22%20frameborder=%220%22%20allow=%22accelerometer;%20autoplay;%20clipboard-write;%20encrypted-media;%20gyroscope;%20picture-in-picture%22%20allowfullscreen%3e%3c/iframe" target="_blank">YouTube</a>&nbsp;video.

Some records are being set by the group. Shaffner’s wife, Julie, who is also a veteran, caught a 39-inch, 21-pound northern pike, and a guest of the group caught a 39-inch, 18-pound northern pike. Entire families are welcome to Hook ‘Em and Cook ‘Em events at Angostura and Custer State Park in the summers.

In addition to helping vets, Shaffner also has a keen interest in fitness. He is pursuing a minor in exercise science and training for the Trans South Dakota race that starts July 17 in Beulah, Wyoming. He wants to qualify in the Elite category by finishing the 714-mile race in four days. He will complete 709 miles with a bike and paddle down the Missouri River at Pierre, South Dakota, for five miles. The race ends at Sioux City, South Dakota.

His other biking efforts include&nbsp;<a href="https://www.facebook.com/Team-Shake-and-Bake-20-173792310932473" target="_blank">Team Shake and Bake 2.0</a>&nbsp;which was organized to help a veteran with medical expenses. Shaffner is also training to compete in Amazon’s&nbsp;<a href="https://ecochallenge.com/" target="_blank">Eco-Challenge Patagonia</a>.

“I love the butterflies I get when I’m in endurance races. If something goes wrong, I have to get out of it myself,” he said.

Chadron student helps veterans through fishing

The Pillars for the Park dedication ceremony will be held this Saturday, June 26 in Alliance's Central Park.&nbsp; "I just can not hardly believe that it is here already," Pillars for the Park Chairman Tami Cox Swearingen said. "All that time of meetings and all the people raising money...I mean everyone has been so fabulous. The folks at K.L Wood and Croell...and Hubbell, they have all done such a fabulous job. It's looking beautiful." The celebration will start at 2 p.m.

"We have a fun day planned and of course Crossbell will be there to play," Swearingen said. "It's just going to be a fun day in the park and I hope everybody comes out and enjoys what they've done for the community. I've talked to Larry McCracken and they will be having the American Legion Color Guard to present the flags. Matthew and Jack Moomey will be playing trumpet to the National Anthem. Mr. Mike Dafney, our&nbsp;illustrious Mayor, will be there to speak. I will be there of course to speak because that seems to be what I do best. Following that the 7th Street Dance Studio kids will be there. All of my board [Pillars for the Park] will possibly be there. Of course we lost Wayne McLaughlin this year and we're very sad about that. We're just all so excited, it's just amazing." The original construction of the pillars was in the 1930's. Panhandle Post asked Swearingen how she feels to revitalize a feature of the park.&nbsp; "I'm really using the word amazing a lot lately, but it is an amazing feeling," Swearingen said. "I've always kind of been a history nut anyway. When I moved back to town, I wanted to do something meaningful and something special. Those poor gardens have lived a long, long life and it looked so bad...so to be able to be a part of bringing that back and see the excitement in people. I read on the Facebook page [Pillars for the Park] that I have and people say that looking at the pictures now, they have tears and they remember when they were there. It's kind of giving a gift back to the kids so they have all those same memories we do. It's just an awesome feeling." Swearingen said the remaining original pillars were torn down in 2008.&nbsp; "They were there for an awfully long time," Swearingen said. "They were replaced once. The kids from the Job Corp...they wanted them to learn how to do that sort of thing, so I guess they replaced some of them. I was not here, I had moved when that happened. But you know time does everything...we're hoping that these stand the test of time a little bit better. They are made of fiberglass. They are made out of better construction materials from what the old things were. They should be there for a long, long time."

Swearingen said she can't believe how fast the construction process went.&nbsp; "They started last fall and it was pretty darn cold," Swearingen said. "They were working and unless it had snow down there, they were working when they could. They got started back up with it this spring. Of course the rains kind of messed with it a little bit.&nbsp; I drive by there and there's a guy up to his neck in dirt and everything...and it's raining on him like crazy, but he's still down there shoveling. They have done such a good job. The quality of work is just fabulous. The engineers, Baker and Associates, followed their puzzle or game plan and they have done a great job of it. Man, these guys aren't slacking. You go by there and there might be 15 guys and not one of them is standing around. We had hoped that it would come in and be 100 percent done for the dedication; it's not going to be. It's going to be very, very close.&nbsp; It will be enough that we'll have our dedication. They will finish after we're done, but they're almost done anyway. I've been thrilled, I think they have done this in great time. I think it's really more than we could hope for." Swearingen said the pillars will bring back old memories and create new ones for the community of Alliance.&nbsp; "Almost all of my class when we graduated [Alliance High School] we had our pictures taken down there," Swearingen said. "I know already that there's people interested in getting married there. The Knight Museum is where they would call if they want to reserve the sunken gardens. But they got people already reserving them for weddings and what a beautiful place. I think it will increase our tourism. We have so many wonderful things here anyway. It's just a give back project from the heart from a whole lot of people." Swearingen said the total cost of the pillars project was around $544,000.&nbsp; "I know some people seem to think that high and I don't know why they think so," Swearingen said. "You got engineers that are paid...you know there's so many things that have to be paid for all along the way and they don't realize that. It is a lot of money. It cost us $7,000 to hire this Mr. Alvacanta and he will be here for the dedication also. He's the one that wrote one of the big grants and he worked with Shana Brown [Cultural and Leisure Director] on it with Jeff Sprock [Former Alliance City Manager]. We could not have done this without Jeff Sprock. He was so behind us and such a good guy. Anyway we paid him [Alvacanta] to raise some of the money through grant and that grant was a huge one. It ended up covering all the rest of it and of course our&nbsp;anonymous donors. A lot gave from out of town. We had every state, but two in the United States&nbsp; that didn't have somebody from Alliance donate money from their state.&nbsp; The rest of it was all...everything from lemonade stands to dances, raffles, etc. Everybody that goes down there on Saturday and is there for that ceremony and everything...it's a little bit of us, it's a little bit of Alliance."&nbsp;&nbsp;

Swearingen excited for 'Pillars for the Park' ceremony in Alliance

The Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) programs provide assistance to people with disabilities. Both are administered by the Social Security Administration, and individuals who have a disability and meet medical criteria may qualify for benefits under either program.

Social Security Disability Insurance pays benefits to you and certain members of your family if you are "insured," meaning that you worked long enough and paid Social Security taxes. Supplemental Security Income pays benefits based on financial need.

First you have to meet Social Security’s definition of disability, which is different than other programs. Under SSDI or SSI you must have total, permanent disability. They consider the following: You cannot do the work you did before. You cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition. And your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or will result in death.

No benefits are available under Social Security for partial disability or short-term disability. Social Security assumes that working families have access to other resources to provide support during periods of short-term disabilities, including workers' compensation, insurance, savings, and investments.

Social Security looks at five questions to determine if you are disabled. 1) Are you working? If you are working in 2021 and your earnings average more than $1,310 a month, you generally cannot be considered disabled. 2) Is your condition “severe”? Your condition must significantly limit your ability to do basic work-related activities, such as lifting, standing, walking, sitting, or remembering – for at least 12 months. 3) Is your condition on the Social Security list of disabling conditions, or as severe as a medical condition that is on the list? 4) Can you do the work you did previously? 5) Can you do any other type of work despite your medical impairment?

There are special rules and benefits for people who are blind and for disabled widows or widowers. There are also benefits available for disabled children. An Alliance man will serve up to 40 years for a stabbing death.

On June 21, 67 year-old George W. Smith of Alliance was ordered to serve 30-40 years at the Nebraska Department of Corrections.&nbsp;

Smith was convicted of Manslaughter and Use of A Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony in the death of Steven Oliver of Alliance.&nbsp;

The stabbing death occurred on June 19, 2020 at 1020 Toluca Avenue in Alliance.

A jury trial was held May 3-6 in Box Butte County District Court.

HILLSDALE, Wyo. (AP) — Some rail shipments are delayed after about 15 train cars derailed in southeastern Wyoming. 

Union Pacific Railroad is investigating what caused the derailment near Hillsdale around 2:15 a.m. Monday. 

Union Pacific spokesman Mike Jaixen says some of the cars were empty and some loaded. 

The cars were being cleared and the track would be inspected and repaired if necessary.

 The rail company says the derailment could delay some shipments 24 to 36 hours.

CHADRON – The Chadron State Foundation has launched a crowdfunding platform,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/foundation/crowdfunding/" target="_blank">CSCrowdfunding</a>,&nbsp;so donors can support student-led programs and campus initiatives.

The first round of crowdfunding has launched with the following projects: CSC Rodeo roping chute, Biking USA, Social Work conference, scholarships for Rising Sophomores, and CSC women’s wrestling.

The Rodeo team is raising funds for a new roping chute since the current one is 13 years old and needs replaced.

Biking USA is a group of students and faculty who plan to bike across the U.S. in the summer of 2022. Along the 4,000-mile route, students will complete a multidisciplinary capstone project encompassing their CSC education and experiences from the trip. Funds will help students with trip expenses and compensate them for missing a summer of work.

The third project is the 2021 Social Work Conference on Forgiveness Nov. 3. Donors have supported past conferences and the senior students in Social Work hope the new platform will open the opportunity to others.

Scholarships for Rising Sophomores is a fund to provide scholarship support for students who have gone above and beyond in a variety of categories during their freshman year. Award winners are nominated by faculty, staff, or peers.

The fifth project supports the recently announced CSC women’s wrestling program with support for scholarships and equipment.

Chadron State Foundation launches crowdfunding

The Alliance Police Department has investigated reports of four separate vehicle thefts.&nbsp;

They occurred over the last week and the vehicles were stolen.&nbsp;

A 1999 Chevrolet Blazer, 1997 Dodge Dakota, 2019 Doolittle Cargo trailer and a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu were all stolen between June 15 - June 20.&nbsp;

The trailer is the only vehicle, which was not recovered. All cars had the keys inside.

“I appreciate all our community working together to make sure this stops, Alliance Police Chief Philip Lukens said. "It is everyone’s responsibility to prevent crime in our community. Officers have investigated the recovered vehicles to include swabbing for DNA. I highly encourage the individuals involved to get in front of this and reach out to police. We won’t allow this trend to continue in our city.”

The police are reminding all residents to do the following:

-Lock vehicles and remove your keys from the car.

-Any trailers need to have hitch locks or boots.

-Call the police for any suspicious activity.&nbsp;Alliance police said you are not bothering us.

LINCOLN — A 24-year old Omaha man was injured in a jet ski collision at about 4 p.m. June 21 at Lake McConaughy State Recreation Area in Keith County.

The man was taken to UC Health University of Colorado Hospital with nonlife-threatening injuries.

He and a 27-year-old Omaha man were driving their jet skis in the Martin Bay area of the lake near beach area No. 2 when the 27-year-old collided with the man’s jet ski, striking his leg. The man fell off and was taken to shore.

Keystone Lemoyne Fire and Rescue emergency medical services provided medical treatment at the scene. Nebraska State Patrol and Keith County Sheriff’s Office also assisted.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission is investigating the incident. No citations have been issued at this time.

But state lawmakers and city governments are moving forward with their own pot plans. 

Officials statewide have warmed to the idea of legalization since voters passed a constitutional amendment in November legalizing marijuana for adults. 

Some cities want to own and operate recreational marijuana dispensaries. 

If the Supreme Court keeps the drug from being legalized, state lawmakers are planning to craft a legalization bill ahead of next year’s legislative session. 

Republican Rep. Hugh Bartels says he anticipates the Supreme Court will rule on Thursday.

At the peak of cases last fall, Nebraska reported 16,740 new cases during the week of Nov. 20.

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Revenue, Property Assessment Division, reminds property owners that valuation protests must be filed on or before June 30, 2021.

If there was an increase or decrease from the 2020 assessed valuation of a real property parcel to the 2021 assessed value, the county assessor was required to send a notice of valuation change to the property owner on or before June 1, 2021. If a change of valuation notice was not received, and there was a change in value from 2020 to 2021, contact the local county assessor for more information.

If a property owner disagrees with the assessed value, whether or not a notice of valuation change has been received, a protest may be filed with the county board of equalization. The valuation protest may be filed in person or by mail with the county clerk in the county where the property is located. Requirements for filing a protest are on the Notice of Valuation Change.

If the protest filing deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, the filing deadline is the next business day. If a protest is sent to the county board of equalization through the U.S. mail, the protest is considered filed on the date of the postmark. If a protest is sent through the U.S. mail using either registered or certified mail, the date of registration or certification will be considered the postmark date.

July 4th is nearing and the Chadron Police Department would like to remind everyone of the City Ordinances pertaining to fireworks.

 According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, on average, 180 people go to the emergency room every day with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday.

Within the City of Chadron, permissible fireworks can be discharged starting on June 25 and ending on July 5.

· June 25 through July 3 permissible fireworks can be discharged from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

· July 4 permissible fireworks can be discharged from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. on July 5.

It is unlawful to discharge fireworks within 300 feet of a fireworks stand, gas station, or in a public park. 

Fireworks may be discharged at other times upon obtaining a special permit approved by the City Council. 

All local vendors will have what is considered to be permissible fireworks.

While enjoying the holiday, remember these safety tips:

· Only use fireworks as intended, and according to their instructions.

· Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

· Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.

· Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

· Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

· Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

· Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

· Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

Chadron Police Department reminds residents to have a safe 4th of July 

Martin Luther King, Jr. once famously said that “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically.&nbsp; Intelligence plus character–that is the goal of true education.”&nbsp; For generations, Nebraskans have supported our public schools to do just this—to help build the next generation of educated and involved citizens in our state.&nbsp; To that end, our public schools have generally focused on teaching material that supports our communities, and have steered away from hot button political issues.

Here in Nebraska, the Department of Education does not report to the Governor.&nbsp; Our public schools are independently governed by local school boards with oversight from the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE).&nbsp; Unlike many other state agencies where I appoint the directors, I do not manage NDE.&nbsp; NDE is governed by the Nebraska State Board of Education, which is elected by the voters of Nebraska.&nbsp; The elected members of the board set the vision, hire the employees, and make all management decisions.

It’s in this context that I want to bring to light two major issues that are threatening to inject politics into the classroom and to steer our public schools away from their core mission.&nbsp; Right now, NDE is weighing radical sex education material and has also started promoting controversial civics material that tries to rewrite our country’s history.&nbsp; I’ll briefly comment on both issues, and share how you can take action.

First, Nebraskans have been speaking out against the proposed sex education topics in NDE’s draft health standards.&nbsp; The standards would inject non-scientific, political ideas into curriculum standards.&nbsp; That’s why I, along with many others, have called on NDE to scrap the proposed sex education topics in the standards.

It’s important to understand just how radical the draft NDE standards are.&nbsp; The standards say that first graders should be taught to define gender identity.&nbsp; Fifth graders would be educated to “explain that gender expression and gender identity exist along a spectrum.”&nbsp; At 12 years old, students would be taught about anal and oral sex when many kids that age haven’t yet reached puberty.&nbsp; This material not only sexualizes our kids, it goes far beyond basic biological facts about reproduction and clearly crosses the boundary of what’s appropriate to discuss in the classroom.

Over the last few months, hundreds of Nebraskans have testified against the standards at State Board of Education meetings.&nbsp; NDE is still taking feedback on the standards.&nbsp; You can read the standards for yourself by visiting&nbsp;<a href="http://www.education.ne.gov/" target="_blank">www.education.ne.gov</a>.&nbsp; I encourage you to mark your calendar for their next meeting, which will be held on August 6th&nbsp;at a location that is to be announced.

The second issue confronting schools is critical race theory (CRT).&nbsp; Before I comment, I want to briefly share a definition of what this is.&nbsp; According to the Encyclopedia Britannica, it is an “intellectual movement and loosely organized framework of legal analysis based on the premise that race is not a natural, biologically grounded feature of physically distinct subgroups of human beings but a socially constructed (culturally invented) category that is used to oppress and exploit people of colour.&nbsp; Critical race theorists hold that the law and legal institutions in the United States are inherently racist insofar as they function to create and maintain social, economic, and political inequalities between whites and nonwhites, especially African Americans.”

Make no mistake: critical race theory is an attack on our country’s core values.&nbsp; The American founding is based on the idea that “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”&nbsp; While America has fallen short of this aspiration at times, we must all work together to live up to this ideal.&nbsp; The effect of CRT is to pit Americans against one another, rather than building a more perfect union that promotes the dignity of all Americans and respect for people of all backgrounds.

I am concerned that CRT ideology will be pushed in our schools.&nbsp; NDE’s website promotes the 1619 Project, a project of the New York Times that presents a revisionist history of the American founding.&nbsp; Last week after I posted a statement on social media opposing CRT, the founder of the 1619 Project responded to my statement claiming that white supremacy is a “core value” of America.&nbsp; Furthermore, NDE’s website promotes the Zinn Education Project, an organization carrying on the work of self-described socialist Howard Zinn.&nbsp; The Zinn Education Project has been a vocal opponent of states who have sought to ban CRT from being applied in K-12 public schools.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Some have tried to say that teaching CRT is necessary to rooting out racism in our country.&nbsp; This simply isn’t true.&nbsp; CRT is a philosophy of history that is fundamentally anti-capitalist and that aims to destroy our country’s institutions.&nbsp; The ugly parts of American history should be taught and racism must be rooted out. &nbsp;Students should learn about the evils of slavery, the lynching of Will Brown, and the Tulsa Race Massacre. &nbsp;All of this can be done without CRT.&nbsp; We can do this by identifying specific instances of racism and addressing them—without tearing our country apart and pitting people against each other.&nbsp;

It’s not too late. &nbsp;The State Board of Education can take action to address both of these issues.&nbsp; It is important for parents to get involved.&nbsp; You can find the contact information for your board representative at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.education.ne.gov/stateboard/members/" target="_blank">https://www.education.ne.gov/stateboard/members/</a>.&nbsp; Local school boards can also step up and make their voices heard.&nbsp; Make sure you reach out to your school board members.

For generations, Nebraskans have supported our public schools to do just this—to help build the next generation of educated and involved citizens in our state.&nbsp; To that end, our public schools have generally focused on teaching material that supports our communities, and have steered away from hot button political issues.Here in Nebraska, the Department of Education does not report to the Governor.&nbsp; Our public schools are independently governed by local school boards with oversight from the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE).&nbsp; Unlike many other state agencies where I appoint the directors, I do not manage NDE.&nbsp; NDE is governed by the Nebraska State Board of Education, which is elected by the voters of Nebraska.&nbsp; The elected members of the board set the vision, hire the employees, and make all management decisions.It’s in this context that I want to bring to light two major issues that are threatening to inject politics into the classroom and to steer our public schools away from their core mission.&nbsp; Gov. Ricketts: Back to the basics

KEARNEY, NE – A federal court has ordered a Kearney pizza and burger restaurant and its owner to pay $17,216 – $8,608 in back wages and an equal amount in liquidated damages – to 13 workers after the U.S. Department of Labor found overtime and recordkeeping violations of the <a href="https://www.dol.gov/agencies/whd/flsa">Fair Labor Standards Act</a>.

U.S. District Court Judge Richard G. Kopf entered the judgment and injunction against The Flippin Sweet Eateries and its owner, Jason B. Alexander and
 prohibited them permanently from future FLSA violations. The court 
entered the default judgment after the defendants failed to comply with 
court orders and respond to a complaint filed in 2019 by the department.

The department’s Wage and Hour Division
 found the restaurant wrongly classified workers as exempt from 
overtime, when they were not.&nbsp;Consequently the employer failed to pay 
employees overtime at time-and-one-half their hourly rate when they 
worked more than 40 hours in a workweek and failed to maintain accurate 
records of employees’ wages, both FLSA violations. 

“A federal court has held this employer accountable to 
complying with federal wage laws and court orders and ordered them&nbsp;to 
pay 13 workers not only their hard-earned wages, but also damages to 
help make up for the fact that they weren’t paid properly,” said Wage 
and Hour Division District Director Marcy Boldman in Des Moines, Iowa. 
“The Wage and Hour Division is committed to ensuring that all workers 
receive their rightfully earned wages and that employers abide by the 
law. Other employers should use the outcome of this case as an 
opportunity to review their own pay practices to ensure they comply.”

HARRISON – Old-fashioned story-telling, through cowboy poetry and music will conjure up images of sitting around the campfire or working the ranch during the first-ever Cowboy Culture Night, scheduled for June 26 in Harrison.

The event, spearheaded by Harrison residents Tami Hughson, Katie Reece and Annette Oldaker, will shine the spotlight on traditional cowboy poetry and music by Robert Dennis, Yvonne Hollenbbeck and the Ramblin’ Rangers.

Dennis, a rancher near Red Owl, S.D., has been a regular contributor to Cowboy Magazine and has published three books of poetry and short stories, as well as a CD of cowboy music. His poetry and singing have taken him to events across the region, but when he’s at home on the family cattle ranch, Dennis will likely be in the saddle or building one.

Hollenbeck lives on an Angus and Quarter Horse ranch near Clearfield and uses her experiences as a ranch wife to inspire her poetry, stories and weekly articles in the Farmer-Rancher Exchange. She is also an avid quilt maker and quilt historian, often presenting programs about her collection of family quilts, which span 150 years.

The Ramblin’ Rangers – Brad and Bonnie Jo Exton – worked as rangers in forests, parks and monuments throughout the West, and their music is influenced by their experiences as they honor the western way of life.

In addition to the featured entertainment, organizer Tami Hughson says several local artists will serve as opening acts for the evening, which also includes a meal starting at 5:30 p.m. Free-will donations will be accepted, with proceeds to the Harrison Community Club to benefit the annual events the club sponsors.

By Erin Lee,&nbsp;Upper Niobrara White NRD&nbsp;Groundwater Management CoordinatorThis is the Crop Water Use Report for the week of June 21st.Over the past week, wheat used 2.42 inches.Expected use by wheat for this week is 2.64 inches.Over the past week, corn used 0.40 inches.Expected use by corn for this week is 0.43 inches.Over the past week, beets used 0.22 inches.Expected use by beets for this week is 0.24 inches.Over the past week, potatoes used 0.22 inches.Expected use by potatoes for this week is 0.23 inches.Over the past week, dry beans used 0.13 inches.Expected use by dry beans for this week is 0.14 inches.Over the past week, soybeans used 0.22 inches.Expected use by soybeans for this week is 0.23 inches.Over the past week, sunflowers used 0.22 inches.Expected use by sunflowers for this week is 0.24 inches.Over the past week, alfalfa used 2.20 inches.Expected use by alfalfa for this week is 2.40 inches.Over past week, actively growing lawns used 2.50 inches.Expected use by actively growing lawns for this week 2.60 inches.In the past week average ET gauge readings were 2.15 inches.The average rainfall for the district was 0.48 inches.The weather forecast for the next week shows highs ranging from the upper 70s to low 100s, and lows in the 50s and low 60s. It will be mostly sunny and dry throughout the week with a chance of showers and thunderstorms later in the week.In the last week, soil moisture monitoring station 2 showed 57% water available at 12”, 65% water available at 24”, and 80% water available at 36”. The producer did irrigate. Remember this is in a Loam soil type with Beets planted and will vary depending on site, weather, irrigation management, topography, crop, and soil type.The crop water use report is completed using the average growth stage for each crop and ET gauge reading from across the district.
