As of today, 7,090 or 8.1% of Panhandle residents have received the COVID vaccine. Health care personnel, long-term care, and those 65 and older are currently being vaccinated. This will take several more weeks. People who have received both COVID vaccine doses, will not be required to quarantine due to close contact.

If you have received your first dose and have not heard when you will receive your second dose, don’t panic, you will be contacted by the vaccine provider that administered your first dose.

Five additional deaths are being announced as follows, bringing the total deaths to 180:

Panhandle under wind chill advisory 

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — An eastern South Dakota prosecutor says a Rapid CIty police officer who shot and seriously wounded an armed teenager will not be charged. 

Minnehaha County State’s Attorney Daniel Haggar was asked to review the investigation into the Dec. 25 shooting. 

Haggar says the officer acted in “an objectively reasonable manner” and the shooting was justified. 

Authorities say the shooting happened after a routine traffic stop in Rapid City.

 A 15-year-old boy eventually exited the vehicle with a 12-gauge shotgun in one hand and a bottle of liquor in the other hand.

 Investigators say the suspect ignored commands to put down the gun and instead pointed it at the officer, at which time the officer fired.

CRAWFORD – There will be more happy campers at Fort Robinson State Park. Or, at least there will be room for them.

The park is adding 42 new pads to the Red Cloud Campground, which serves visitors seeking full hookups for their recreational vehicles and campers. Each pad will have connections for 50-amp electricity, water and sewage. The expansion will more than double the size of the campground, which has 32 pads.

Mike Morava, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission regional park superintendent, said the project was needed because the campground often reaches capacity during the busy season between June and September. He is hopeful the new sites will be ready for visitors this summer.

The estimated $1.27 million cost of the project is being paid for from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission Capital Maintenance Fund. The fund consists of money collected from taxes on the sale of motorboats and personal watercraft.

The campground is one of three at the park. The Soldier Creek Campground offers 98 sites for everything from tents to RVs, while another campground is exclusive to those who bring horses to the park.

Fort Robinson State Park expanding campsites for RVs

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Director of College Relations Alex Helmbrecht received the national Blue Key Outstanding Advisor Award for 2021 during the organization’s virtual conference Jan. 15.

Former CSC student John Murphy of Harrison, Nebraska, nominated Helmbrecht for the honor. In his nomination, Murphy wrote Helmbrecht is an advocate for Blue Key members.

“During his career at CSC, he helped two students, both Blue Key members, receive national writing awards for blogs about their time as CSC football members,” Murphy wrote. “He has become another father figure to me and is someone I know I can look up to for any reason.”

Helmbrecht, a 2005 CSC alumnus, served as the institution’s Sports Information Director from 2007 to 2014 and was named the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Sports Information Director of the Year in 2013. Helmbrecht has been the Director of College Relations since 2014. He is responsible for the management and operations of the College Relations’ department, and has a wide range of duties related to the successful design, implementation, and execution of marketing and communication plans.

&nbsp;“Serving as Blue Key’s advisor has given me so many rewarding experiences. I’m thankful to all the officers and students who have been actively involved with Blue Key over the years, as well as all the co-advisors. This award is as much theirs as it is mine,” Helmbrecht said. “I get to play a small part in these students’ lives, but I have no doubt they all go forward in their communities embodying Blue Key’s motto of ‘Serving I Live.’”

Blue Key is the oldest honor society on campus and its membership values leadership, service, scholastic achievements, citizenship, and an adherence to principles of faith. The organization assists with the annual Homecoming parade, hosts the Brain Bowl Quiz Bowl, assists Cardinal Key with blood drives, serves as ushers for various events, and co-hosts Ivy Day with Cardinal Key each spring to recognize top students in each major.

Helmbrecht values traditions and has started some of his own. Last year, he asked Project Coordinator Kate Pope to write the names of all CSC Blue Key members from when the chapter began in 1932 in an&nbsp;<a href="https://chadronstate.smugmug.com/News/Recent/i-Gjc8pgJ/A" target="_blank">official roll book</a>. Now, all newly inducted members sign next to their names.

Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Jim Powell wrote he has been impressed with Helmbrecht’s dedication to Blue Key in a letter supporting Murphy’s nomination.

“His energy and passion in the promotion of the chapter and all it represents is commendable,” Powell said.

In her letter of support, Student Activities Coordinator Megan Northrup said Helmbrecht is involved on campus and possesses an immense knowledge of the school’s history, as well as clear vision for CSC’s future.

Dr. Tracy Nobiling, Professor of Justice Studies, said in her letter of support that Helmbrecht’s service on campus committees is extensive and diverse.

“He seeks out opportunities to serve students and the campus in ways that make students a top priority. All of these activities reflect his innate leadership abilities and eagerness to assume leadership responsibilities; his role as Blue Key Honor Society advisor is one such example,” Nobiling wrote.

Adults only: Virtual webinar talks animal love in time for Valentine’s Day

LINCOLN&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is urging caution in extremely cold temperatures throughout the state this week. Any motorist who becomes stranded should stay with their vehicle and call for help.

“The cold temperatures we are expecting throughout the state this week can be dangerous,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “It’s critical that motorists are prepared in the event they become stranded while traveling. That preparation includes knowing what you need to do and having the proper items with you to help.”

If you become stranded on the road, stay with your vehicle and call for help. The vehicle is the best shelter from the elements and is the easiest thing for emergency personnel to spot while looking for a stranded motorist. Any motorist who becomes stranded can call the NSP Highway Helpline at *55 or 800-525-5555 and speak directly with an NSP dispatcher.

All travelers are urged to&nbsp;keep a winter weather survival kit in their vehicle. Some basic items to include are: First Aid Kit, phone charger, ice scraper, shovel, small bag of sand, flashlight with extra batteries, blankets or sleeping bags, extra clothing and winter accessories, jumper cables, tow rope, tool kit, matches, candles, red flag or bandana, high energy or dehydrated foods, and bottled water.

Anyone traveling should use well-traveled routes and alert others to your destination, route, and estimated time of arrival. That information can assist in locating a stranded vehicle.

Nebraska administers nearly 5% more vaccine doses last week

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — The coronavirus pandemic is bringing to Wyoming an influx of people who work remotely. 

They include tech worker Ty Lunsford, who grew up in Casper and left in 1998.

 In November, Lunsford moved back with his wife and three sons.

The COVID Tracking Project ranks South Dakota’s death count at 40th highest in the country overall and the sixth highest per capita at about 204 deaths per 100,000 people.

 The update released Sunday showed 98 new COVID-19 cases out of 509 examinations that were processed in the last day, lifting the total number of positive tests to 109,229.

ALLIANCE - Firewood harvest is usually prohibited at Box Butte Wildlife Management Area, but people with authorization will be allowed to collect it Feb. 1-March 10.

Non-commercial firewood users who receive permission from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission may cut any fallen dead timber in specific areas during the six-week period. Those with the authorization form will receive a map of areas open for harvest and vehicle access, and will be urged to use safe practices while cutting.

Allowing people to collect firewood not only aids in habitat management of targeted areas on the property. It also reduces the amount of wood that may become hazardous to boats on the 1,600-acre reservoir and provides an opportunity for people to fuel their fireplaces.

The free authorization form may be obtained by contacting Hunter Baillie, Game and Parks district wildlife manager, or Justin Powell, wildlife biologist, at 308-763-2940, or by stopping by the Game and Parks Commission’s northwest district office at 299 Husker Road in Alliance.

Firewood harvest temporarily allowed at Box Butte WMA

McCOOK, Neb. (AP) — The head rodeo coach of Mid-Plains Community College in southwestern Nebraska is recovering after undergoing emergency surgery to treat a head injury he received from a horse last week. 

The college says in a news release that coach Garrett Nokes sustained the injury after returning to his home in McCook after rodeo practice the evening of Jan. 28. Nokes was taken to McCook Community Hospital, then flown to Kearney, where he underwent surgery. 

The school said Friday that Nokes remains in Kearney after being moved to the acute rehab unit there a day earlier.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — U.S. Air Force bombers from military bases in the Dakotas will be flying over Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida, for the Super Bowl.

 Three different bombers are scheduled to fly over during the national anthem on Sunday. 

They include a B-1 Lancer from Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City, South Dakota; a B-52 Stratofortresss from the Minot base in North Dakota; and a B-2 Spirit from the Whiteman base in Missouri.

Nebraska sees jump in vaccinations, lag in follow-up shots

The Alliance Fire Department has released more information on the Feb. 4 basement fire.&nbsp;

The Alliance Fire Department responded to 1100 block of Platte Avenue on Thursday at 6:33 a.m. regarding smoke coming from the basement of a house.

"Upon entry there was a moderate amount of smoke coming from the basement," Alliance Fire Chief Troy Shoemaker said. "The fire was located in a room on the west side of the home. Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire and the smoke was ventilated from the home."

A female and juvenile male were in the house during the fire and were transported to Box Butte General Hospital for observation for potential smoke inhalation.

"After an investigation and interviews conducted by the Nebraska State Fire Marshal Investigator, the fire has been determined to have been intentionally set," Shoemaker said. "This case remains active with the fire marshal’s office."

The Alliance Fire Department was assisted by the Alliance Police Department, City of Alliance Public Works/Electrical Department and Black Hills Energy.

Sasse on Thursday posted a YouTube video response to county GOP activists in Nebraska who are pushing to censure him a second time after he said Trump deserved some blame for inciting the riot. 

The Nebraska Republican Party’s State Central Committee is expected to vote Feb. 13 on whether to censure him. 

The committee has censured Sasse once before, in March 2016, after he criticized then-candidate Trump.
