The sounds of Nebraska will fill the air during the 2025 Nebraska State Fair as the Pepsi Live Music Series brings 47 different bands and performers from across the state to its stages representing 54 genres of music, all included with fair admission.

“This year’s lineup is truly homegrown,” said Karli Schulz, Nebraska State Fair events and entertainment director. “Every band and artist performing as part of the Pepsi Live Free Music Series is based right here in Nebraska.”

From classic country and red dirt to pop, rock, Latin, polka, folk and blues, the Pepsi Live Music Series offers something for every taste. Performances take place at three key locations — Earl May Fair Square, ACP Park Stage and the Pump &amp; Pantry Party Pit — with multiple shows daily throughout the Fair.

“The Nebraska State Fair is one of the largest events in the state and one of the largest stages for many of our performers,” Schulz said. “Whether an artist is looking to make it big or just loves to perform, the opportunity to be in front of people is here.”

Nebraska State Fair Live Music Series Showcases 47 Nebraska Bands Across 54 Genres

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Nebraska Public Service Commission (PSC) reminds consumers that it will be holding virtual town hall meetings as part of the Black Hills Energy Rate case (<a href="https://psc.nebraska.gov/natural-gas/ng-124-black-hills-nebraska-gas-llc-dba-black-hills-energy-rate-case" target="_blank">NG-124</a>) application process. On May 1, Black Hills Energy filed an&nbsp;<a href="https://psc.nebraska.gov/sites/default/files/doc/NG-124%20Application.pdf" target="_blank">application</a>&nbsp;with the PSC seeking a $34.6 million general rate increase. The proposal will increase Black Hills’ fixed customer charges and distribution charges, the rates regulated by the Commission.

As part of the process, and to provide information and address questions regarding the potential rate increase, the Commission will hold three virtual town hall meetings. A formal hearing on the Black Hills Energy rate case application (<a href="https://psc.nebraska.gov/natural-gas/ng-124-black-hills-nebraska-gas-llc-dba-black-hills-energy-rate-case" target="_blank">NG-124</a>) is set to take place in the Commission Hearing Room, 1200 N Street, Suite 300 in Lincoln, Tuesday, October 14 through Friday, October 17, from 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m., daily. Testimony and comments during the formal hearing will be limited to the parties involved in the proceeding. Individuals who are not a party to the proceedings can access the hearing to view through the calendar on the PSC website.

PSC Gives Reminder Of Town Hall Meetings In Black Hills Rate Case

During the late-night hours of Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2025, Officer Deines conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle along the 400 block of Bordeaux Street for failing to dim high beam headlights and not having an operational low beam headlight.

During his contact with the driver of the motor vehicle, Officer Deines observed suspected drug paraphernalia inside the vehicle. Officer Deines called for K-9 Sukey and Handler Officer Orsborn to assist with the traffic stop. Officer Orsborn deployed K-9 Sukey, which then alerted to suspected narcotics being inside the vehicle. A search of the vehicle was conducted with officers locating approximately 7.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine.

As a result, the driver of the vehicle, 29-year-old Dean Hawley was placed under arrest for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Hawley was transported to the Dawes County Jail and booked into custody. Bond was set at 10 percent of $20,000.

Rodney “Rod” Romig, a 1962 graduate of Alliance High School, exemplifies a life of excellence in education, global leadership, community service and the arts. His distinguished career as a writer and creator spans continents, institutions and decades, making him a fitting Recipient for the Alliance Public Schools Foundation Wall of Fame. His roots in Alliance have continued to inspire his efforts to give back, support future generations and uplift the community where his journey began.

According to his website, Romig "lived and worked in Hawaii, where he served as the Dean of the College of Business Administration and Professor of Economics at Hawaii Pacific University," for 19 years.

Also, Romig "was a regular columnist for Pacific Business News for several years and served on numerous local not-for-profit boards, including the Hawaii International Film Festival. He still travels extensively from his home in Sarasota, Fl. to South America, the Middle East and Europe."

The Alliance Public Schools Foundation asks that community members join them on October 25th&nbsp;at the Golden Hour at their annual fundraising event to honor and celebrate this distinguished AHS alumnus. Tickets will be sold in September.

Dr. Rodney Romig Set to Join Alliance Public Schools Foundation Wall of Fame

Open Plains Transit (OPT), which serves most of western Nebraska with rural and intercity bus transportation extending into South Dakota and Wyoming, is honored to receive the South West Transit Association’s (SWTA) Annual Spotlight Award in the Hit the Spot – Electronic category for rural systems.

The winning entry, “Planting the Seeds of Collaboration!” was created to showcase the vital role public transportation plays in people’s lives, its impact on rural communities and how working together can spark regional change—especially in places like Cherry County, Nebraska.

“We were thrilled to win a Spotlight Award for our ‘little video’ with a big heart,” said Jonnie Kusek, Director of Transportation for OPT.

“I wanted to create a video that showed the heart of public transportation, so Valentine, NE—known locally as ‘Heart City’—was the perfect setting. Cherry County was a newer project we wanted to highlight, and October offered the perfect backdrop—beautiful colors, crisp air and a sense of freshness. We set out to show three things: the availability and connections of our service, how public transportation can boost rural economies and the power of partnerships.”

Kusek co-directed the video with Kate Littrel of White Shutter Media, who also served as videographer.

“Kate was an absolute trooper—seven months pregnant—this was her last shoot before having her baby, and I had her running between Cherry County, NE, and Rosebud, SD. We raced to capture as much footage as possible before we lost the light. Then the rain and sleet came, and we had to ground the drone. I’d worked with Kate on other Nebraska Panhandle projects, and she completely understood my vision for Cherry County.”

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Martha Siegfried, Sandy Lurz, the late Rodney Hockenberry, Kim Burge, Mark Hagge and our OPT employees—all the true stars of our video. Perhaps the most scenic ride of all is the Sky Tram, now included with your wristband. “I personally love the Sky Tram at night,” Glock said. “You get a bird’s-eye view of the barns and buildings, and as the sun sets, you really feel the magic of the Fair. Carnival Wristbands, New Attractions at the 2025 Nebraska State Fair

A new boat ramp is about to open at one Sandhills lake near Hyannis, while another one will be temporarily closed.

Construction workers are nearing completion on the new boat ramp at Avocet Wildlife Management Area’s Beem Lake, and it is scheduled to open Aug. 21. On the same day the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will close all public access to nearby Frye Lake WMA so contractors can complete the new boat ramp there.

The new concrete ramps are being built on elevated peninsulas that extend into the lake, functional for varying water levels. While Frye is accessible until the closure date, visitors are being advised to take caution entering and exiting as workers have already begun hauling rock to the site. The project is expected to be completed this fall.

In addition to the ramps, both lakes are getting improved parking areas and docks compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. A new vault toilet is being installed at Frye.

Funding is provided through the Recreational Boating Safety grant program managed by the U.S. Coast Guard, with matching funds from the Game and Parks Game Cash Fund.

Summer fish kills, a natural phenomenon of fish dying off in large numbers during the summer months, often are caused by low dissolved oxygen levels in the water.

One major contributor to these events is a stretch of cloudy days following a stretch of warm sunny weather.

“Under normal conditions, aquatic plants and algae produce oxygen through photosynthesis using sunlight; however, when sunlight is blocked by clouds, oxygen production can drop quickly,” said Aaron Blank, a fisheries biologist for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission.

“Algal blooms can further complicate things as algae can die off much quicker than rooted aquatic vegetation and once they die their decomposition consumes oxygen.”

Fish kills are more prevalent in smaller bodies of water because of their limited volume and the potential for rapid oxygen depletion.&nbsp;Small, shallow ponds with abundant vegetation are particularly susceptible to summer fish kills.

Anglers who observe dead or dying fish should call their nearest Game and Parks office. National Poll Worker Recruitment Day is Aug. 12, 2025. Secretary Evnen is also marking the day by thanking Nebraska’s poll workers who take on the task of staffing Nebraska’s polls.

“Nebraska is continually recognized as a leader in election procedures and security, and that is due in large part to our county election officials and their poll workers,” said Secretary Evnen.

“We could not conduct our elections smoothly and independently without the work of thousands of Nebraskans who step up and serve their communities as poll workers.”

Nebraska has long been recognized as a leader in election administration. More than 9,000 Nebraskans are necessary to staff polling sites and county election offices for each election. While retired Nebraskans have historically made up the largest portion of the state’s poll workers, Secretary Evnen is urging young Nebraskans to take this opportunity to enhance their civic engagement by becoming a poll worker.

Throughout the 2025 Summer EBT period, households with eligible school-age children can receive assistance in buying groceries with the program’s second year of operation. A one-time payment of $120 will be issued for each eligible child, intended to cover the three summer months at $40 a month.

The sixth issuance was sent to eligible students as reported by school districts and any new eligibility determinations through public assistance benefits and Summer EBT applications.

Summer EBT cards will be mailed to eligible families using their registered address with DHHS or their child’s school. Once families receive the Summer EBT card, it must be activated using the instructions mailed with the card.

Eligible families will have 122 days, or four months, to use Summer EBT benefits. The 122-day count begins the day after benefits are issued. If benefits are not used within 122 days, funds will be returned to the federal government and cannot be reissued.

The facility features dedicated, high-quality courts for both volleyball and pickleball, including up to 12 hardwood volleyball courts and 4 indoor pickleball courts. With expansive spectator seating, modern amenities, and a mezzanine-level walking track, the Sportsplex is built to deliver a top-tier experience for both athletes and fans.

In 2024, Nebraska NetFest Volleyball State Championships welcomed 53 teams across three divisions, while the Nebraska NetFest Pickleball Singles and Mixed Doubles Championships drew 93 participants across all divisions. Nebraska NetFest Volleyball and Pickleball Registration Open

Indoor concerts, outdoor shows, motorsports and bull spectacles offer high-energy entertainment for every fairgoer

With something for every generation and interest — indoors and out, on stage and in the dirt — this year’s Nebraska State Fair ticketed lineup includes concerts, comedy, motorsports, and wild bull action.

“We’ve put together a lineup of events that truly reflects the spirit of the State Fair,” said Karli Schulz, Entertainment and Events Director for the Nebraska State Fair. “There’s something for every Nebraskan to Showcase Your Fair Face.”

Among the highlights of the concert lineup are comedian Brian Regan and the nostalgic act Forever Young.

“Fans have long asked for a comedian back inside the Heartland Events Center,” said Courtney Glock, Marketing Director for the Nebraska State Fair. “And Brian Regan is a hilarious, family-friendly choice to lead the way.”

Forever Young is headlined by Vanilla Ice and features a collection of other 1990s and 2000s pop sensations, including Chris Kirkpatrick of *NSYNC.

“We expect to see all ages of pop fans singing along to favorites like ‘Ice, Ice Baby’ and ‘Bye, Bye, Bye’ — among many others,” Schulz said.

Another highlight is the newest addition to the motorsports lineup: Crossroads Chaos.

“Crossroads Chaos features drivers racing around a figure-eight-shaped track attempting to avoid collision at the intersection point,” Schulz said. “The name ‘Chaos’ seems incredibly fitting for the Twisted Chrome series.”

Tickets Remain for All 2025 Nebraska State Fair Events

On Aug. 1, 2025, at approximately 9:14 p.m. the communications center received an automated message of an accident with airbag deployment at the intersection of the South Beltline Highway and 21st&nbsp;Avenue.&nbsp;

Investigation revealed that the vehicle was northbound on 21st&nbsp;Avenue and left the roadway to the east, traveling through the intersection, colliding with a ditch embankment and coming to rest on the railroad tracks.

James Murray, 57-years-old, of Scottsbluff was the sole occupant and registered owner of the vehicle.&nbsp; Murray was transported to the hospital by Regional West Ambulance, where he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Due to his injuries, Deputies cited Murray for DUI in lieu of arrest.

Scottsbluff PD officers were the first to arrive and assisted with the investigation and traffic control.&nbsp;&nbsp; The Scottsbluff Rural Fire Department also assisted at the scene.&nbsp;

Updates on Motor Vehicle Accident in Scottsbluff Earlier this Month

Lincoln, Neb. – The Nebraska Department of Correctional Services (NDCS) continues its emergency response plan following extensive roof damage to two housing units at the Nebraska State Penitentiary (NSP).

There were no reported injuries, and all impacted individuals were safely relocated.

“In corrections, we train for the unexpected,” said Director Rob Jeffreys.

 “The team at NSP and across NDCS came together quickly and immediately worked to make sure everyone was safe during and after this natural disaster. While many of our staff were facing damage to their own homes, they still showed up to keep their teammates, the population and Nebraska safe. This weekend was a testament to the team’s commitment to the NDCS mission: Keep people safe.”&nbsp;

The storm impacted two dormitory-style housing units at NSP, which housed 387 incarcerated individuals. Staff moved 250 individuals to the gym and other available housing at NSP. The remaining 137 individuals were relocated to gyms at the Omaha Correctional Center and the Tecumseh State Correctional Institution.

<a>Contractors will begin identifying the extent of damage today. Initial internal estimates indicate repairs will take at least one month.&nbsp;</a>

Nebraska Dept. of Correctional Services Continues Storm Damage Response

On August 8, 2025, at approximately 6:44 p.m., Alliance Police Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of Laramie Avenue for a report of an assault.

The victim, Alliance Assistant Fire Chief Bradley Schrum, reported that he observed a male and female walking northbound on Cheyenne Avenue near the Alliance Fire Hall. The male was seen discharging a fire extinguisher in the driveway and on the sidewalk outside the Fire Hall. When Assistant Chief Schrum confronted the individuals in the 600 block of Laramie Avenue, the male approached the driver’s side of his pickup and discharged the fire extinguisher directly into his face. The discharge caused temporary breathing difficulty, eye irritation, and left residue inside the vehicle.

Officers located the individuals a short time later in the area. The male, identified as Fred John Red Nest, 46-years-old, of Alliance, refused multiple lawful commands to stop and was taken into custody with the assistance of additional officers. The female was identified as Jennifer Jensen, 47-years-old, of Alliance.

Fred John Red Nest was transported to the Box Butte County Jail and booked on felony assault and additional charges. The case has been forwarded to the Box Butte County Attorney’s Office for prosecution.

The Alliance Police Department appreciates the cooperation and the assistance of the Alliance Fire Department during this incident.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp;- Today, Governor Jim Pillen appointed Chawnta Durham of North Platte as district court judge in the 11th&nbsp;Judicial District. That district includes Arthur, Chase, Dawson, Dundy, Frontier, Furnas, Gosper, Hayes, Hitchcock, Hooker, Keith, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Perkins, Red Willow and Thomas counties.

Since 2023, Durham has operated her own law practice, focused on family, criminal and immigration law. She previously worked at Lindemeier Law Office and was a deputy public defender and deputy county attorney in Lincoln County.

Durham continues to serve her community and the legal profession through a variety of positions including as chairperson of the Mental Health Board for the 11th&nbsp;Judicial District and mock trial events organized within local schools.

Durham received her undergraduate degree from Union College in Lincoln. She earned a juris doctor at the University of Nebraska College of Law.

Durham fills the vacancy due to the resignation of Judge Matthew D. Neher.

Although the college experience presents some new academic, personal and emotional challenges for students, it can also be an amazing opportunity for growth. Schreiner will highlight what helps students successfully navigate the transitions to college life so they are able to thrive. She will provide specific strategies for success and well-being, along with ways family and community members can support students in the process.

Schreiner is a Professor of Higher Education at Azusa Pacific University in southern California, where she teaches in the doctoral program. An award-winning teacher and researcher, her work focuses on creating a thriving campus where students, faculty and staff are meaningfully engaged in their work, energized by learning, involved in healthy relationships and making a difference

Author of the Thriving Quotient, Schreiner has studied more than 200,000 students from more than 300 universities across the U.S., Canada and Australia. She has also contributed to numerous publications, as well as editing the book, Thriving in Transitions: A Research-Based Approach to Student Success.

In addition to research, Schreiner has created instruments to assess thriving among college employees and is co-author of The Student Satisfaction Inventory, as well as books about sophomore success. She has consulted with more than 200 universities about student success and thriving, faculty and staff well-being, leadership support for thriving employees, and effective teaching strategies.

Galaxy Series Kicks Off Fall Semester Focused on College Success

On August 7, shortly before 2 p.m., Crawford Rescue and the Dawes County Sheriff's Office responded to an apparent horseback riding accident in rural Dawes County, south of town.

Upon arrival, it was determined that 74-year-old Linda Verhage had died on the scene and the Dawes County Coroner/Attorney was dispatched to coordinate the investigation. After viewing the scene, it was determined that Ms. Verhage had indeed died of injuries received in a horseback riding accident.

CHADRON – Following a nationwide search, Dr. Shaunda French-Collins has been named the Dean of the School of Business, Mathematics, and Science.

“I’m very excited to be back in the School of BMS and in the deanship role. I look forward to continuing to collaborate with the talented students, faculty, and staff in these fantastic departments,” said French-Collins, who served as interim dean of Business, Mathematics, and Science from 2022-23.

French-Collins said the best insight she gained as interim dean was to remain student-focused and colleague-focused.

“I will continue to ask, when making decisions, ‘Is this decision best for our students? Our faculty, and our staff?’” she said.

French-Collins began her teaching career at CSC in 2011 and has sponsored several successful events, including The Big Event. Most recently, French-Collins was a Professor of Communication Arts and Department Chair, as well as CSC’s Teaching Excellence Award recipient in 2021.

“My mother was a teacher for 40 plus years and showed me the definition of empathic leadership. She has shaped me as an educator throughout my life, and I strive to lead like her each day,” she said.

In 2022, French-Collins was accepted in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) with Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht, who was recently named the Dean of Applied Sciences. Dr. Charles L. Welch, former chair of the AASCU Board of Directors and ELP coordinator, said the leaders in the class reflected the strength and value of the AASCU network. Welch served as CSC Commencement speaker in May 2025.

“Attending the Emerging Leaders Program motivated and inspired me to pursue an administrative leadership role. I think strategically and vision-minded and appreciate those types of conversations with other colleagues,” French-Collins said.

In Feb. 2022, French-Collins and two other CSC employees made a virtual presentation at the national Academic Chairpersons Conference. French-Collins outlined how the Communication Accommodation Theory developed by Howard Giles relates to verbal, non-verbal, upward, and downward communication specifically in academic leadership roles.

“With my background in communication studies, I think I am much more aware of the importance of clear and consistent communication, effective listening, and conflict resolution skills. This knowledge has helped shape my leadership style significantly,” she said.

French-Collins received her bachelor’s in public relations from Northwest Missouri State University in 2006. In 2009, she earned her master’s in speech communication from the University of Central Missouri, and attained a doctorate in communication studies from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2015.

Most recently, French-Collins was a Professor of Communication Arts and Department Chair, as well as CSC’s Teaching Excellence Award recipient in 2021.“My mother was a teacher for 40 plus years and showed me the definition of empathic leadership. She has shaped me as an educator throughout my life, and I strive to lead like her each day,” she said.In 2022, French-Collins was accepted in the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) with Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht, who was recently named the Dean of Applied Sciences. Dr. Charles L. Welch, former chair of the AASCU Board of Directors and ELP coordinator, said the leaders in the class reflected the strength and value of the AASCU network. Welch served as CSC Commencement speaker in May 2025.“Attending the Emerging Leaders Program motivated and inspired me to pursue an administrative leadership role. I think strategically and vision-minded and appreciate those types of conversations with other colleagues,” French-Collins said.In Feb. 2022, French-Collins and two other CSC employees made a virtual presentation at the national Academic Chairpersons Conference. French-Collins outlined how the Communication Accommodation Theory developed by Howard Giles relates to verbal, non-verbal, upward, and downward communication specifically in academic leadership roles.“With my background in communication studies, I think I am much more aware of the importance of clear and consistent communication, effective listening, and conflict resolution skills. This knowledge has helped shape my leadership style significantly,” she said.French-Collins received her bachelor’s in public relations from Northwest Missouri State University in 2006. In 2009, she earned her master’s in speech communication from the University of Central Missouri, and attained a doctorate in communication studies from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2015.

French-Collins named Dean of Business, Math and Science at Chadron State

CHADRON, Neb. – Two Chadron State College pre-health professions students had a rare opportunity during an international camp for high school students on the CSC campus this summer.

CSC Associate Professor Dr. Mary Keithly, a faculty member for Summer Science Program International (SSPI) for several years, hired CSC students Piper Ryschon of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, and Paige Boitz of Pueblo West, Colorado, as paid lab assistants during the xx-week camp at the Math Science Center of Innovative Learning.

Boitz said a typical day included class activities, lectures, and labs with the high school students.

“We were the busiest in the labs. We were expected to answer many questions about the project and help with math calculations and other tasks. Meals with the students were the best, as there was always a range of topics to talk about since they all came from different backgrounds. It was one of my favorite parts of each day,” Boitz said.

Ryschon helped make the chemical solutions for the experiments throughout the program. She also helped culture bacteria and extract the proteins from them.

“After the proteins were extracted, I helped purify the proteins with a low-pressure liquid chromatography (LPLC) system. I was also in charge of autoclaving media and biohazard waste,” Ryschon said.

Boitz said she helped with all experiments, but specifically culturing bacteria, making solutions, and purifying proteins. The experience helped her learn the aspect of science that she enjoys most.

“I knew I liked being in a lab, but when failures and successes came from the students and I saw the joy their successes truly brought them, it was enlightening. I learned the skills to aid high school kids through one of the toughest programs in the country. I grew just as much as the students did just from helping them,” Boitz said. “The students’ excitement when an experiment worked reminded me of my love for science.”&nbsp;

Ryschon said she learned valuable insights about lab experiments.

“This summer, I got to see firsthand how long some laboratory techniques take and the amount of critical thinking you need to combat obstacles that pop up during the experiment,” Ryschon said. “There will always be hard days when nothing goes right and you do a lot of problem-solving. It can be repetitive and aggravating. You even second-guess your ability to do science and whether you should even be in the field. But there are always good days where you love every second, and it makes everything worth it. Most days in the lab don’t even feel like a job, you just get to do what you love.”

It also introduced me to a world where women in STEM are capable of doing anything that they put their mind to,” Boitz said.Ryschon said the faculty at the camp provided her with excellent input on her future career and graduate school options.“One of the new professors I met provided me with great networking opportunities in the biotech industry, which I would have never received otherwise,” Ryschon said.Ryschon said she enjoyed the students’ different outlooks on the world and science. She also enjoyed their fun-loving personalities.&nbsp;Boitz’s favorite moment was a trip to Chadron State Park on July 4.“For some students, it was their first time in the U.S. for July Fourth, so it was fun for them to experience the outdoors and everything the park had to offer,” Boitz said. “I connected quite quickly with the students from different countries and cultures because I was curious to learn about where they came from.”
