 Unfortunately, a male was located and pronounced deceased at the scene.

  At this time, the male’s identification is unknown, but a lead is being pursued.  Depending on the outcome, additional details regarding the male’s description may be released at a later time.&nbsp;

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — David P. Huebner, a North Platte native, former Border Patrol agent, and agricultural producer, has officially announced his candidacy for Nebraska’s 3rd Congressional District. He will run as a conservative Republican, challenging longtime incumbent Rep. Adrian Smith of Gering, who has held the seat since 2007.

In an interview on Sandhills Spotlight On Eagle Media's <a href="http://www.z935country.com">Z 93.5 Country</a> with Derek Beck this week, Huebner emphasized his deep local roots and hands-on experience in farming, law enforcement, and small business ownership as key qualifications for the role.

“I want someone in Congress who has skin in the game,” Huebner said. “Someone who knows what it’s like to get up in a snowstorm to check on calves or to put on a badge and a gun and serve on the southern border.”

Huebner, 38, returned to western Nebraska five years ago to raise his family and operate a small ag business. He believes his background gives him a direct connection to issues central to the district, including agriculture and border security.

“Border security is national security,” he said, recounting his years of service under Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama, and Donald Trump. “We need to codify policies that protect our borders and our citizens. That’s not partisan—it’s common sense.”

The 3rd Congressional District covers most of western and central Nebraska and is among the largest districts geographically in the country, with 80 counties. Huebner said he’s already begun a grassroots campaign, attending events in York and Buffalo counties in the days following his May 30 announcement.

“I’ve got 46 weeks to cover 80 counties before the primary. We’re hitting the road hard. Voters deserve to meet the person asking for their support,” he said.

In addition to agricultural and security issues, Huebner voiced concern about how undocumented immigration may impact future U.S. Census counts and congressional representation for Nebraska.

“If we don’t fix how illegal aliens are counted, we risk losing a House seat. That could mean losing the 3rd District entirely. We have to get ahead of that now,” he said.

Huebner said his campaign will be grounded in bold conservative values, including support for law enforcement, border security, Christian principles, and rural America.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission will consider recommendations for a 2026 mountain lion hunting season at its June 13 meeting in Sidney.

The meeting begins at 8 a.m. Mountain time at the Country Inn and Suites, 664 Chase Blvd.

Staff will recommend a mountain lion season in the Pine Ridge, Niobrara and Wildcat Hills units, with adjusted harvest limits compared to the 2025 season.

The harvest limit in the Niobrara Unit would increase to a maximum of six mountain lions, with a sublimit of three females; the maximum harvest in the Wildcat Hills Unit would decrease to two, with a sublimit of one female; and the harvest limit in the Pine Ridge Unit would remain at 12 with a sublimit of six females.

Adjusted harvest limits are based on changes in mountain lion populations in the units, with the Niobrara population likely expanding, and the Wildcat Hills population likely significantly reduced compared to the previous season due to a high number of documented mortalities from various causes in that unit.

The objective for each unit is to provide a harvest opportunity for mountain lions that allows the population to remain resilient and healthy, while reducing the population in the Pine Ridge, keeping the population stable or slowing growth in the Niobrara Valley, and maintaining the present population in the Wildcat Hills.

Season 1 in all three units would take place Jan. 2, 2026, through the end of February. The season would end immediately in a unit if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit were reached.

Up to 960 permits could be issued by lottery in the Pine Ridge Unit, up to 480 permits in the Niobrara Unit, and up to 160 permits in the Wildcat Hills Unit. Permits are available to residents only.

An auxiliary season that allows the use of dogs would be March 14-March 31, 2026, if the annual harvest limit or female sub-limit were not reached during Season 1 in any unit, and also would close immediately if either the limit or female sublimit for the unit is met. A number of permits equal to the number of lions remaining in the limit would be issued by lottery to unsuccessful permit holders from that unit who apply for the auxiliary season.

Staff also will recommend the Commission approve to modify Duck Zones and Goose Units for submission to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Changes would not become effective until the 2026-27 waterfowl season. The network is designed to give small, independent hospitals the power of scale—sharing costs, data, and best practices—while allowing them to remain autonomous and responsive to local needs. Through a coordinated effort, NHVN hospitals will work together on clinical and business strategies to enhance patient care, control costs, and partner more effectively with insurers.

“Working together enables our member hospitals to make impactful investments—like in population health management—that wouldn't be possible alone,” said Tyler Toline, NHVN Board Chair and CEO of Franciscan Healthcare in West Point. “We can stay independent and still reap the benefits of a larger system.”

The network’s foundation is a clinically integrated network (CIN) that currently serves nearly 300,000 patients. A physician-led Clinical Integration Committee will oversee quality standards, data-sharing, and care coordination across member hospitals. The goal: reduce administrative burden while improving patient outcomes.

“Through the CIN, we’re showing insurers the high-quality care we already deliver—and building stronger, value-based partnerships as a result,” said Dr. Jared Kramer of Howard County Medical Center in St. Paul.

In addition to clinical collaboration, NHVN will help members cut costs by coordinating purchases and sharing operational expertise. An operations committee made up of hospital leaders will facilitate this work.

NHVN becomes the fifth rural hospital network launched by Cibolo Health, a company that supports independent hospitals through clinically integrated networks. Alliance, NE – Storm Peterson, 35, of Alliance was found guilty of 3rd Degree Sexual Assault of a Child following a jury trial held in Alliance on June 4th. 

Sergeant Josh Norris and Officer Brandt Smith investigated the complaint in October and developed a criminal case in collaboration with the county attorney and a child forensic interviewer from Capstone. 

Thanks to a thorough and detailed investigation, the evidence presented to the jury resulted in a guilty verdict.

 A sentencing hearing will be held at a later date.

Jury finds Alliance man guilty of 3rd Degree Sexual Assault of a Child

After operating for several months without federal funding in the hopes that it would receive its new grant, the Retired &amp; Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) at Northwest Community Action Partnership (NCAP) was notified that it will not be funded. Operations will be wrapped up by the end of June and the offices in Chadron and Crawford will be closed.

"The impact of this program cannot be understated", said Rachel Johnson, Director of Volunteer Services at NCAP, "RSVP has been in Dawes County for over 50 years and volunteers have been involved in almost every aspect of the community from bell ringing and food outreaches to museums and cultural events. RSVP's efforts have made this a better place to live." Johnson said. Johnson has been the director of the RSVP program since 2013 and stated the program typically engaged almost 200 seniors age 55+ and annually they served approximately 24,000 hours. Johnson said "Volunteerism is not only good for the community, but it improves the health of the volunteer. We are encouraging our volunteers to continue serving, but the loss of an organized program will become apparent as the service of existing volunteers wanes and new volunteers are not recruited."

“Our staff have run a phenomenal program for decades with an impact that goes beyond what words and numbers can adequately describe. We are devastated about this sudden loss in funding. We hope that volunteers will continue to serve the community in whatever capacity is meaningful to each of them”, said NCAP CEO Brooke Smith.

Since the program began electronic record keeping in 2006, over 1,090,000 hours have been reported and nearly 1,300 seniors have been part of the program - many of them serving for decades. Independent auditors have valued the work these volunteers provide at approximately $750,000 per year.

“The time and effort members of RSVP have selflessly dedicated to Dawes County has made a tangible difference in the lives of so many, this loss will be heavy on our hearts”, Smith said.

NCAP will be hosting a farewell appreciation lunch at the Dawes County Fairgrounds on Tuesday, June 24 from 11:30- 1pm and the public is invited to come and celebrate the volunteers and their service to the community.

Dawes Co. Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) loses funding

The Hemingford American Legion Post #9 is proud to announce that Ryan Ragsdale and Jacob Bryner have been selected for Boys State and the Hemingford American Legion Auxiliary Unit #9 has selected Laney Dahlberg for Girls State.

The American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls State are summer leadership and citizenship programs for high school juniors, which focus on exploring the mechanics of American government and politics. The programs are sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary respectively.

All three students will be attending the campus of the University of Nebraska in Lincoln from June 1st through the 7th.  During that time they will study local, county and state government processes in this nonpartisan political learning experience. Every spring, the Boys State and Girls State program provides approximately 25,000 young men and women with hands-on educational opportunity designed to instruct tomorrow’s leaders in the privileges and duties of responsible citizenship.

Delegates receive special instruction in parliamentary procedure and organize themselves into two mythical political parties. Then they campaign, hold rallies, debate and ultimately vote to elect city, county and state officials. Once elected to office, delegates are sworn in and perform their prescribed duties. Citizens not elected to office are given appointments and visit the offices of their elected or appointed counterparts in actual state, county, and local government.

Two outstanding citizens, known as “senators” are selected from each of the 50 Girls State and Boys State sessions held across the country to represent their state at the American Legion Boys Nation and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation held at Washington D.C. in July.

The office, currently at 299 Husker Road, will move into the strip mall at 1317 W. Third St. Hours of operation and the office’s phone number will remain the same.

The temporary move allows Game and Parks to build a new service center with a biological laboratory at the Husker Road site. The old building’s infrastructure was significantly failing.

Game and Parks operates district offices or service centers throughout the state. Our federal government is currently in a cost-cutting mode. President Trump and/or DOGE have recommended major funding reductions in a number of programs and departments. Most of the cuts being debated directly affect low-income people. Should we reduce or eliminate Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, SNAP, federal student loans, veterans' programs, school lunch, public radio and television, National Parks, etc.

News stories that announce these cuts often include phrases like "however, this program was established and funded by Congress." It may be up to the courts to determine whether agencies created and funded by Congress can be eliminated by the Executive Branch.

Something that makes our Constitution a brilliant document is the separation of powers and checks and balances. This divides the duties of governance among the three branches and gives each branch some control over the other two. The legislative branch (Congress) makes laws, the executive branch (President) enforces them, and the judicial branch (Supreme Court) interprets them when settling legal disputes.&nbsp;

Article One of the Constitution establishes the Legislative branch, Congress, which is given the power to make laws. The House of Representatives and the Senate have seven specific powers: to introduce legislation, regulate commerce, levy taxes, declare war, approve or reject certain presidential appointments including judges, create policies under implied powers, and oversee the executive branch. They pass laws that are necessary and proper to carry out those powers.

Article One establishes procedures for passing bills. Congress has the "power of the purse," meaning Congress controls government spending and taxation. Tax and spending laws originate in the House of Representatives, then are sent to the Senate. A final form is sent to the President who may veto and send back to Congress.

Interstate and international commerce are regulated by Congress. They coin and regulate money and establish a credit limit, allowing the government to borrow.

Even though the President is the Commander in Chief, Congress establishes, regulates, and funds the military. Congress also declares war.

Other enumerated duties include determining how a person can become a naturalized citizen, rules for patents and copyrights, bankruptcies, and a few others.

Congress has the power to impeach, which has only been applied to presidents and judges. The House of Representatives brings the charges, and the Senate holds the impeachment trial, with the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court presiding.

Other duties are listed in Article I of the Constitution, and the body is also granted a "necessary and proper" clause. This means there are implied powers necessary to carry out laws that have been passed.

The ninth section of Article I of the Constitution places limits on Congressional powers and the powers of other branches.

The Writ of Habeas Corpus cannot be suspended unless we have had a rebellion or invasion. This means that a person must be brought before a judge or court to ensure that their imprisonment is legal.

No ex post facto laws - you cannot be punished for violating a law that was written after the action occurred (and was legal at that time).

No head taxes, poll taxes, and no tariffs on products traded between states.

No money may be taken from the Treasury unless Congress appropriated it.

No person holding office may accept presents, emoluments (money or other gifts), or titles of any kind without the consent of Congress.

Our Constitution places various limits on the powers of Congress and state governments, as well as the Presidency and the Supreme Court. Each branch has certain duties as well. Congress is debating the budget bill. Federal courts are hearing cases. Our Constitution was designed to provide balance and grant powers to protect rights of citizens. The Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District (UNWNRD) is hosting the sixth annual amateur photo contest, in search of natural resources related photos from residents within the district encompassing Box Butte, Dawes, Sheridan and Sioux counties.

The goal of the photo contest is to encourage the residents of the district to capture and appreciate the beauty in their own backyard. “Northwest Nebraska is a beautiful place, with everything from rolling plains in the sandhills to the towering Ponderosa Pine trees in the Pine Ridge, our natural resources close to home are definitely something to showcase,” commented Dave Kadlecek, UNWNRD Director.

In order to narrow down the photos the district will organize the incoming photos into five different categories: Agriculture, Nature, Wildlife, Recreation and Other. “The 2024 contest procured nearly 300 photos and with these categories, we were able to award five different photographers for their breathtaking photos,” stated Nancy Fisher, UNWNRD Director.

The deadline for the 2025 contest is July 1 st . Please see the list below for requirements to enter your photos.

 The photo must be taken within the district (Box Butte, Dawes, Sheridan, Sioux counties).

Hemingford to host annual City-Wide Garage Sale

Jessica Hare filled this space for Keep Alliance Beautiful long before I ever applied for a job at our Keep America Beautiful affiliate. I plucked her columns and others from the newspaper email and filled the page. I cannot attest to the date though I’m certain one or more of her submissions expounded on the Alliance Recreation Center garden.

The garden came to mind recently during a meeting at the recycling center. Kathy Worley, KAB executive director, mentioned that she would be planting marigolds to attract butterflies at the ARC this spring. She explained that Jessica had started the garden and the ARC has continued the practice since she moved away several years ago. Whether for raising vegetables, growing flowers or to accentuate the beauty of your space, gardens transform what could have been an unremarkable tract of land. The ARC’s garden is still impacting dozens of children as they learn outside of school each summer.

The ARC’s executive director, Reve Fries, and Sarah Meyer, childcare director, updated me on plans for 2025. Volunteers Paul and Lori Coryell are back for their fourth season to show summer camp children how to grow a garden – starting with planting at the end of May (delayed a few days by welcome rains). The setting for the beds also speaks to the tenants of KAB with a mural painted by Carnegie Arts Center artists in 2023 to enhance the “beauty” there. Sarah explained that the sign – designed by the kids – is made from recycled bottle caps. An old deck became repurposed for the current fence. Two years ago Beyond School Bells helped fund an irrigation system. The ARC has also bought garden tools for the kids – 72 enrolled this year from five years old by July 31 to children entering the fifth grade.

Tending the garden fits in the daily schedule. “In the morning we’ll take a group of kids and see if any weeds need pulled,” Sarah said, noting they will harvest and serve anything ready to pick later on. Reve added a lot of the harvest is done by the after school program students during the fall after summer camp, such as pumpkins for the kids to decorate. Last year they brought in 159 zucchinis. They especially enjoyed this vegetable since Lori brought it back as zucchini bread. Sarah said they set out the produce they don’t use in the lobby for members and others to take.

Gardening is part of a robust summer program at the ARC. Local partners and presenters offer a unique experience. Kathy will be among the visitors as she shares about how to keep Alliance beautiful. Reve said the children will use cardboard boxes for a “city build” as they envision what Alliance will look like in 2040. Sarah said they take ideas from the classes and vote where to go on field trips.

“(We are) really focused on helping the academic slide decrease (with) a lot of extended learning opportunities,” Reve said. There are 25 children on rate reduction scholarships this year (with $15,900 in scholarships awarded so far). Scholarships will also be available this fall as the ARC steps up to fill the gap left when Alliance Public Schools begins its four-day school week. Reve said, “We will have a Fifth Day program for kids in the fall.”

Kathy Worley, KAB executive director, mentioned that she would be planting marigolds to attract butterflies at the ARC this spring. She explained that Jessica had started the garden and the ARC has continued the practice since she moved away several years ago. KAB: Sowing Seeds For The Future At The Alliance Recreation Center

SUTHERLAND, Neb - Cyclists hit the road early Monday morning as Day 2 of the 2025 Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska (BRAN) took off from Sutherland, continuing the weeklong trek across the Cornhusker State.

Riders will follow a scenic 71-mile route along the Platte River, passing landmarks like Buffalo Bill’s Ranch in North Platte and the historic Fort McPherson National Cemetery near Maxwell. The day’s ride will end in Gothenburg, where participants will rest before continuing eastward on Tuesday.

There will be seven food trucks in the parking lot at the Impact Center in Gothenburg to greet the riders this afternoon beginning at 4 pm, with music in the event center by Rascal Martinez from 6-9 pm, along with a cash bar and a Pints for Polio fundraiser by the Gothenburg Rotary Club.&nbsp;

The annual ride began Sunday in Oshkosh, with riders camping overnight in Sutherland. Tuesday’s route will take cyclists from Gothenburg to Broken Bow as they make their way to the final stop in Fremont on Saturday.

The Transportation Department will be closing Frontage Road south of 27 th Street on Monday June 2 and will remain closed for up to 2 weeks. Access to the Uptown Scottsbluff Mall and adjoining stores will still be available by way of Frontage Road from Circle Drive.
