Alliance, NE – Tanner Blomenkamp, the former manager at the Alliance Runza, has been sentenced following a plea agreement in March. Judge Travis O’Gorman sentenced Blomenkamp to a term of four to six years in prison for possession of child pornography, and two additional years for enticement by electronic device. The sentences will run consecutively. 

Blomenkamp was originally charged with multiple counts of possession of child pornography but entered a plea to avoid trial.

Key in the successful prosecution of this case was forensic evidence obtained from Mr. Blomenkamp’s cell phone. The Alliance Police Department is the only department in the western panhandle with the technology to perform forensic investigations on cell phones. Without this crucial evidence, this case could have ended differently, perhaps without any prison time. Sergeant David LaDuke and Officer Tyler Sherlock should be commended for their hard work, dedication and their pursuit of justice for the victim.

Meals will be served Monday through Friday from May 27 through June 20, 2025, at Emerson Elementary, located at 700 Black Hills Ave., and at Alliance Middle School at 11th Street and Box Butte Avenue.

I'm a big fan of PBS and NPR - public television and public radio. Nebraska Public Media broadcasts from Lincoln and is sent to us via a tower near Angora. PBS and NPR reach 99% of America, and there is no charge. Families of any income level can enjoy their programming. When our children were little, we didn't pay for cable, and there weren't subscription stations then. Our antenna picked up two Scottsbluff television stations, and we got PBS.

It seemed like PBS was the only television station our TV was ever on. We had a one-hour limit on TV on school days. The kids watched Sesame Street and Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood when they were small. Then they advanced to Reading Rainbow (How many of those books did we buy because Levar Burton recommended them?) and The Magic School Bus (again, buying lots of books about science with Miss Frizzle). By Middle School we'd moved on to MathNet, Bill Nye the Science Guy, and Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego? Remember when Carmen Sandiego was captured at Carhenge? (It was before the cars were all painted gray.)

I'm not sure whether any of these shows, besides Sesame Street, still air. I've looked at the list of children's programs on PBS over the last few decades, and it is exciting to see that PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) have continued to focus on educational programming that is fun. What incredible shows! They help children learn, quite different from network television's focus on selling sugary cereal or toys.

I hadn't really thought about how special and how different these stations were until President Trump signed an executive order to "cease federal funding for PBS and NPR".&nbsp;

PBS and NPR get $535 million in public money through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. PBS receives about 15% of its funding from federal funds. The network is also funded by donations from viewers, corporate sponsorships, foundation grants, and programming dues.

What about NPR? Their annual budget is $279 million. 36% comes from corporate sponsors. 30 percent comes from the program fees that stations pay for NPR shows. How about donations from "listeners like you"? About 23%. NPR gets 1% of their funding from the federal government, about $1.50 per citizen. However, member stations that license NPR's content receive an average of 10 percent of their funding from the CPB.

In the last few years local newspapers and radio have been struggling, with fewer reporters covering state and local news. Area television stations have been sold to larger markets who want the bandwidth. We still read the Alliance Times-Herald and listen to KCOW, but with few reporters, they rely more on press releases all the time. It's difficult to get local and state news from sources more reputable than social media.

Earl and I have been donors to Nebraska Public Media for decades. We watch shows on PBS and Passport and we listen to public radio. Nebraska Public Media broadcasts Nebraska news and stories from all over our state along with PBS programming. Every morning we hear Nebraska news on 91.1, our local NPR station, and we make sure we tune in, especially when the Legislature is in session.

We thought we could get news from Lincoln or Omaha via Paramount (CBS) or Peacock (NBC). However, they share Denver news. When our son was home from Lincoln, he tried logging into his accounts to get Lincoln news. They shifted him to Denver stations, too. Back to Nebraska Public Media to get our Nebraska news.

How did we end up with public broadcasting anyway? Radio and television shows were offered by commercial networks and supported by advertisers. In the 1960's the Carnegie Corporation decided to launch a study to determine whether non-commercial television was feasible. There was little incentive for NBC, CBS, and ABC to offer educational programming. Carnegie's recommendation was to create public stations across the country. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was created by Congress in 1967, during the presidency of Lyndon Johnson.

President Trump and many Republicans contend that PBS and NPR are biased, although both have always enjoyed bipartisan support in Congress. The White House posted that public television and radio “receive millions from taxpayers to spread radical, woke propaganda." However, independent analyses have found both PBS and NPR to be among the most objective and reliable news sources in America.

PBS has done a great job of helping to educate America's children. NPR provides news and music no other radio stations offer. Both offer programming that sets them apart from commercial media. They deserve our continued support.

Getting Ahead: PBS and NPR

Alliance, NE – The scheduled opening date for the pool is May 30 th if weather and water temperatures allow. The schedule for the first few weeks is as follows.

6-7 am: Adult lap swim (18 and older) (M-F only)

12-1 pm: Adult lap swim (18 and older), 5 and under tot swim (accompanied by adult 18+, remain in zero depth area)

5-6 pm: Adult lap swim (18 and older), 5 and under tot swim (accompanied by adult 18+, remain in zero depth area)

In an effort to maximize public access, Big Blue Bay will no longer be available for private parties. The public is encouraged to use the pool for parties, but those parties will take place during normal operating times. If you call to schedule a party, pool staff will reserve several tables as necessary to accommodate the event. This policy change allows parties during open swim and allows the public more access to the pool.

Night swim will begin June 25 th and will be from 6-8pm Wednesday through Saturday.

Measles is an acute, highly contagious respiratory viral disease. Symptoms include fever, runny nose, cough, and rash. Although measles is usually considered a childhood disease, it can be contracted at any age. Children under the age of five, adults over the age of 20 years, nonimmune pregnant and immunocompromised people are at greatest risk of developing severe complications from measles. There is no specific treatment for measles.

The best way to protect yourself and your family against measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases is by immunization. Children should receive their first dose of measles vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age and another dose at four to six years of age. It is recommended that infants from six to 11 months old in Sheridan County receive an early dose of the MMR vaccine. A resident with only one dose of MMR should receive their second dose as soon as possible.

In the United States, the MMR vaccine is generally first given at 12 months of age, but is sometimes recommended for children as young as six months of age who are traveling internationally or could be exposed in a local outbreak. Any Nebraskan planning to travel, particularly internationally, needs to ensure they are up to date with their MMR vaccine. If you have not had two doses of the measles/mumps/rubella (MMR) vaccine, talk to your health care provider or local health department right away about getting caught up.&nbsp;The MMR vaccine is safe and 97% effective at preventing measles after two doses.

On 5/25/25 at approximately 8:19 a.m., Scottsbluff Police were dispatched to a reported structure fire at 405 W Overland in Scottsbluff. 

 Upon arrival to the residence, Scottsbluff Police found three occupants of the home on scene near the rear entry door of the residence where there were visible flames coming from inside the home. 

 Two occupants of the home had visible injuries and emergency medical response was requested by on-scene officers. 

 Scottsbluff Fire Department arrived on scene and extinguished the fire within the home. 

 The two injured occupants were transported to Regional West Medical Center for treatment. 

 70 year old occupant Sandra Hagen succumbed to her injuries at RWMC and the second occupant remained hospitalized for treatment of injuries.  Next of kin has been notified. 

 The cause of the fire was deemed an accidental ignition of a medical oxygen supply. 

 The residence sustained estimated damages of $30,000.  The 400 block of W Overland was closed for approximately one and a half hours during the investigation.

LINCOLN, Neb. — Twenty high school seniors from across Nebraska have been selected for a prestigious University of Nebraska–Lincoln program aimed at addressing a critical shortage of food animal veterinarians in the state.

The students were named to the second cohort of the Nebraska Elite 11 Veterinarian Program, a competitive initiative launched through a partnership between Gov. Jim Pillen and the university. The program seeks to develop a pipeline of skilled veterinarians committed to serving Nebraska’s livestock producers, particularly in rural communities.

“I’m excited for the futures of these students,” Pillen said in a statement. “They are pursuing a career path that is certainly in high demand. We need skilled veterinarians who can provide advice and services to Nebraska’s livestock producers. Their commitment to working in our rural communities will help ensure food security, now and into the future.”

OMAHA, Neb. — A federal grand jury has indicted a Big Springs man on multiple charges, including two counts of methamphetamine distribution and one count of illegal firearm possession, U.S. Attorney Lesley A. Woods announced Wednesday.

Kenneth M. Johnston Jr., 46, is accused of distributing 50 grams of methamphetamine on two separate occasions—July 10 and July 14, 2023. Each count carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years and up to life in federal prison, along with a possible $10 million fine and at least five years of supervised release.

Johnston is also charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm on or about January 22, 2025. That count carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, a $250,000 fine, and up to three years of supervised release.

The charges are part of a larger announcement involving 16 unsealed indictments from the federal grand jury for the District of Nebraska, naming a total of 22 defendants. Prosecutors emphasized that indictments are only accusations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Under current law, feedlots within a brand inspection area in Nebraska can become registered feedlots and be exempt from brand inspections when shipping cattle to slaughter. Inspection of RFLs is required, however, when cattle enter the feedlot and the Nebraska Brand Committee can conduct regular audits of RFL records at their discretion.

Sumner Sen. Teresa Ibach, sponsor of LB646, said only the western two-thirds of Nebraska is within the brand inspection area, while the eastern one-third of the state has no branding inspection requirements.

As amended on first-round debate, the measure would require a $1,000 fee to operate a registered feedlot in Nebraska and increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head. The measure also would allow for new inspection exemptions for cattle:

• transferred to the care of another individual without transfer of ownership if proof of temporary possession is established;

• being transferred to or from a qualified dairy;

• transferred to an affiliated grow yard from an inspected RFL under certain conditions; and

• transferred from an affiliated grow yard to an RFL under certain conditions.

North Platte Sen. Mike Jacobson offered an amendment on select file that he said was the result of continued negotiations among various stakeholders.

The amendment, which replaces the previous proposal, would increase the cap on the physical and electronic inspection fee the Brand Committee may charge to $1.50 per head, exempt from inspection cattle shipped to or from a qualified dairy and set the feedlot registration fee at 50 cents multiplied by the feedlot’s maximum livestock capacity.

Jacobson said the amendment would cut the current feedlot registration fee in half. The state’s brand inspection system is important to cow/calf producers, he said, and the compromise amendment would ensure that all factions of the industry are treated fairly.

Calling the amendment “a good first step,” Ibach spoke in favor of it. She said further reforms need to happen, but that the proposal would “move the needle” in the right direction.

“I feel like we’ve made some progress,” she said.

Whitman Sen. Tanya Storer also supported the amendment, although with reservations. A vigorous opponent of the measure on the first round of debate, Storer called the negotiation process “frustrating” and said she had “fought like hell” to make sure the integrity of the state’s brand inspection system was maintained for cattle producers.

“This industry is the core — the foundation — certainly of my district, but I believe of the state of Nebraska,” Storer said.

She offered and later withdrew a floor amendment to the Jacobson amendment to replace a mileage reimbursement system with a flat surcharge fee for travel expenses incurred by brand committee members for inspections.

Ibach said the change was not part of the agreement that was reached during negotiations, but she offered a floor amendment with those same provisions that also included a $20 cap on the surcharge.

She said she was willing to do so in order to not derail the bill and “keep talking” about the change before the final round of debate. The Ibach amendment was adopted 36-0.

Following the 37-0 adoption of the Jacobson amendment, senators advanced LB646 to final reading by voice vote.

Alliance, NE – The Knight Museum &amp; Sandhills Center staff and volunteers will be hosting a “Grave Witching” program and demonstration on Friday May 24th and 25th at 2 p.m. at the Alliance Cemetery. Warm weather brings rise in animal bites - PPHD issues Safety Reminder  

OGALLALA, Neb. — Officials in Keith County have issued a ban on all open burning and the sale and discharge of fireworks due to heightened wildfire risks stemming from ongoing dry conditions.

The Keith County Board of Commissioners approved the emergency resolutions Tuesday following recommendations from local fire chiefs. The fire ban is in effect until further notice and applies across the county, including popular recreation areas like Lake McConaughy and Lake Ogallala.

“No open fires or fire pits are allowed,” officials said, noting that the ban includes campfires and beach fires. Propane-fueled stoves and fire pits remain permitted, according to Nebraska Game and Parks.

Fireworks are also restricted under the new measures. While discharge of fireworks is already prohibited in state recreation areas, the sale and use of fireworks throughout Keith County is now banned.

While the state wide burn ban expired yesterday authorities urge residents and visitors to exercise caution and comply with the restrictions to prevent potential wildfires.
