HARRISON, Neb.- Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is hosting its first dark sky event of the year, titled “Moon and Planet Alignments” on Friday, June 27, from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m.

The program will start with a ranger led evening hike from the visitor center to the Fossil Hills from 7:00- 9:00. Temperatures will be cooling. Visitors are encouraged to dress in layers. Bug spray is also recommended, for the scenic walk across the prairie with the changing light as the evening deepens.

Western Nebraska Community College Professor Tom Robinson is scheduled to lead the program on the planets and moon alignment in conjunction with telescope viewing of the night sky. A park ranger will be on hand to fill in with constellation spotting and stories. Camping chairs or blankets are recommended for this portion of the program. A red filter or regular flashlight is also recommended for visibility during night sky events.

Box Butte General Hospital (BBGH) is pleased to announce, Dr. Brian Shelmadine, DO, PhD, CSCS, CASQSM as the Interim Chief Executive Officer (CEO) effective June 12, 2025. Dr. Shelmadine will pause on clinical work starting July 1, but with the support of the board and the senior leadership team, his intention is to start practicing medicine again by September.

Current CEO, Lori Mazanec, has been out for a medical leave of absence and will continue due to a new treatment option that has been presented to her through Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. She hopes to return early this fall. Dr. Shelmadine is the current Chief Medical Officer and has been with BBGH since 2020. He has been a primary care and sports and lifestyle medicine provider since 2015 and has been working in adjacent fields of exercise, nutrition, teaching, coaching, and strength and conditioning since 2003. Michael O'Dell, Chief Financial Officer, has been the Interim CEO in Mazanec’s absence and will be leaving BBGH at the end of June. Mazanec stated, “On behalf of the entire BBGH staff, I am grateful Mike was willing to step into the interim role during my absence, and want to thank him for his service the past several years, along with helping us fulfill our mission. I wish him the best in his next chapter.” Lutz and Associates, an accounting firm, will assume the Interim CFO role while BBGH recruits a Chief Financial Officer with the help of Bryan Health’s Rural Division in Lincoln, NE.

“Our leadership team and board are committed to providing the best care that we possibly can. I take great pride in building trust with our community and am excited to meet the challenges and demands for an ever-growing medical facility. Ogallala, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— A Nebraska State Trooper narrowly escaped injury after his patrol vehicle was struck on I-80 overnight in western Nebraska.

At approximately 12:00 a.m. MT Thursday, troopers were called to the scene of a broken down semi blocking a lane of travel on I-80 between Roscoe and Ogallala. That area of I-80 is currently under construction with only one lane open in each direction of travel.

As troopers were directing vehicles to keep traffic flowing through the area, a westbound semi failed to slow down and struck a trooper’s parked cruiser. The semi then struck the trailer of an eastbound semi.&nbsp; The trooper was not in his patrol vehicle at the time and was able to run out of the way to avoid the collision. There were no injuries in the crash.

What do our kids do in the summers when they aren't in school? If kids aren't doing things that challenge their brains and their bodies, they might be way behind when they return to classes in August. This can be especially challenging for families in poverty or for low-income families.

It's too easy to park kids in front of a television or computer or gaming system. And what a disservice to them if that is their whole summer! Summer is a time for kids to grow physically, intellectually, and socially.

How does your family plan your summer activities? What do you have for resources? How much money can you budget for things like park passes and pool passes? Can you afford any summer camps, or get scholarships to help cover that expense? How much time can you spend with your children - a few hours a day? A week off work? Is there a circle of friends or relatives who would take turns planning activities?

I think back on what we did as kids - pre internet by a long way. I grew up in a small town in northeast Nebraska. Busy working parents meant we entertained ourselves. We read - a lot - heading to the library every couple of days. We went swimming every day. We played in the park with our friends: swings, slides, merry-go-round, softball, croquet, hide-and-seek, climbing trees. My brother biked to a farm pond two miles out of town to go fishing. We were all in 4-H, so that meant hours spent on sewing and cooking projects. We also played lots of cards and board games.

Here in Alliance our children enjoyed many of those things as well: the library's summer reading program, swimming lessons and pool passes, playing with kids in the neighborhood or at the park. They went to Vacation Bible School every year. Some of their friends went to VBS at several churches during the summer. Our family rode bikes all over town and spent a lot of time at Laing Lake learning to identify all the different kinds of birds and ducks that used to be there. We did arts and crafts and science experiments.

Think about all the skills we build when we cook: following directions, doing math, measuring, discussing nutrition, learning about different cultures and the foods they eat. We loved to cook with our kids and would turn the kitchen over to them as they got older.

Big vacations like trips to Disneyland were out of our price range. But our state park pass was well used! We had an old canvas tent which was later replaced by a dome tent from Cabela's. It didn't take long to load up the tent, blankets, sleeping bags, backpacks, and coolers to head to one of the nearby parks.

Chadron State Park was our favorite. We hiked a lot, and there are lots of trails there. Lookout Point let us see Laramie Peak, Harney (now Black Elk) Peak, and bluffs, lakes, and towns in northwest Nebraska. Our kids loved the pool, the trail rides, the crafts at the activity center, archery, paddle boating on the ponds. They learned to identify constellations. They got to saw wood and cook over fires.

Fort Robinson was where we camped when we wanted activities that were more educational or cultural. A ride on the tour train meant learning about the history of the Fort, and the history of our area. Our family saw all the musicals and went to the art show every year. The kids loved the museums, especially the Trailside Museum with the skeletons.

We hit all the parks and recreation areas within an hour or so. Bridgeport SRA, Walgren Lake, Scottsbluff, Chimney Rock, Toadstool, Agate Fossil Beds. Each location offers something different for a family to enjoy. Nebraska Game and Parks and the National Park Service have special programs during the summer, and you can find these online. Rangers give talks and lead hikes. There are youth fishing opportunities, with well-stocked ponds. Most activities are free, but you need a park sticker for your vehicle.

This weekend, June 13-14, Chadron State Park will be celebrating their 104th anniversary. All kinds of activities and exhibits are scheduled on Saturday.

Fort Robinson will host the Western Wildlife Art Show July 2-4, and special programs from Humanities Nebraska will be offered each day as well.

Getting Ahead: Summer activities for families 

North Platte, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an Illinois man wanted in connection with a Chicago homicide investigation.

Wednesday afternoon, NSP was alerted that a homicide suspect was believed to be traveling through Nebraska, driving a semi. Troopers were able to find the specific semi just after it had exited I-80 and parked at a business south of the interstate.

Troopers located the driver, Essian McGinnis, 34, of Tinley Park, Illinois, and took him into custody without incident. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail on an active warrant for homicide issued in Cook County, Illinois.

The Nebraska State Patrol is working with the United States Marshals Service and the Chicago Police Department on this case.

By NSPNorth Platte, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an Illinois man wanted in connection with a Chicago homicide investigation.Wednesday afternoon, NSP was alerted that a homicide suspect was believed to be traveling through Nebraska, driving a semi. Troopers were able to find the specific semi just after it had exited I-80 and parked at a business south of the interstate.Troopers located the driver, Essian McGinnis, 34, of Tinley Park, Illinois, and took him into custody without incident. He was lodged in Lincoln County Jail on an active warrant for homicide issued in Cook County, Illinois.The Nebraska State Patrol is working with the United States Marshals Service and the Chicago Police Department on this case.

LINCOLN, Neb.&nbsp; — Twelve Nebraska counties have been designated as primary natural disaster areas following prolonged drought conditions, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced in a letter to Gov. Jim Pillen on June 2.

The designation, made by USDA Deputy Under Secretary Brooke Appleton, comes after data from the U.S. Drought Monitor showed that the counties either endured severe drought (D2) for eight or more consecutive weeks or experienced extreme (D3) or exceptional (D4) drought levels during the growing season — thresholds that trigger federal assistance.

The affected counties include Blaine, Brown, Dawson, Deuel, Hooker, Kimball, Lincoln, Logan, McPherson, Platte, Rock and Thomas.

This Secretarial disaster declaration allows farmers and ranchers in both primary and contiguous counties to apply for Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans. These loans are designed to help producers recover from losses by financing the replacement of essential assets such as livestock or equipment, covering operating expenses, or restructuring existing debt.

Eligible producers have eight months from the date of the declaration — until February 2, 2026 — to submit loan applications. Each application is evaluated on its individual merits, including the extent of production losses, available collateral, and the applicant’s ability to repay.

Producers seeking assistance are encouraged to contact their local FSA office for guidance on the application process.

The Rally for America will be Saturday, June 14, 10:30 am to noon at 3rd and Box Butte in Alliance. Those attending will share concerns about programs they see that are in danger of being cut by the federal government. A cross section of local people will be rallying and carrying signs to support programs that are used by all Americans: Medicaid and Medicare, National Parks, affordable health care.

'Rally for America' to be held in Alliance

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - Planning has begun for the 14th annual Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon, scheduled for September 27. The race will have a full marathon, half marathon, half marathon relay, and a 5K run/walk.&nbsp;

The Platte Valley Companies Monument Marathon is the largest annual fundraiser for the&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College&nbsp;Foundation, which supports students, programs, and facilities at&nbsp;WNCC. Last year the marathon celebrated a record setting 13th year, attracting 602 runners and their families to Scotts Bluff County, raising $78,672 dollars for&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;students, and bringing the total funds raised to $636,208 since the marathon's inception in 2012.&nbsp;

"The continuing success is made possible by the generosity of Platte Valley Companies, and their CEO, Hod Kosman," Jennifer Reisig, Race Director and&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;Foundation executive director said."We are so grateful to them for their support for the fourteenth year in a row.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

"It's a very prestigious event locally, and it's getting more and more prestigious around the marathon circuit in the world," Kosman said. "We should be proud of what our community does. How this marathon showcases our people, our community, and what we are about: helping students reach their goals and help them succeed in their lives. Year after year we hear stories about how we've done that and how important it is. We are very honored to be a title sponsor."

Reisig also mentioned the records set last year, “In 2024 we were able to capitalize on efficiencies and increased marketing made possible by our sponsors. This helped reach a record number of runners, which brought more people to Scotts Bluff County, and ultimately provided more funds for&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;students. One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event stay in the Panhandle and help students on&nbsp;WNCC's Scottsbluff, Sidney, and Alliance campuses.”&nbsp;

WNCC&nbsp;Foundation staff were in attendance to speak about the year-round work it takes to put on an event of this magnitude. New to the team is Monument Marathon summer intern, Mia Arnold. Mia is a recent graduate of&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;who will continue her education at Bellevue University in the fall.&nbsp;

"I was a volunteer in '23, that's when I first knew about the race and got interested in it," Arnold said. "When I saw there was an opportunity to be an intern, I was super excited and jumped on board. The Foundation has provided a lot for me as a student. I graduated in May 2025, and I just wanted to give back to something that's given a lot to me."

For the September 27, 2025, race there are already more than 270 runners registered from three countries and 35 states.&nbsp;

“Looking ahead to the 2025 race, we’ve seen even more support from sponsors and grant funders, and our registrations are up 50% compared to the same time last year. As this event grows, we keep focus on the purpose of the race: to promote the beauty of the region, to build tourism, to encourage a healthy lifestyle, and most of all to support&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;students,” said Reisig.&nbsp;

The Marathon requires a year-round planning, coordination and upwards of 300 volunteers that help on race day.

"We have some phenomenal volunteers in the community," Alena Haun, the volunteer coordinator and development director for the&nbsp;WNCC&nbsp;Foundation said. "We have more than 39 spots that we put course marshals and over half of those are two shifts. There are people that have been there nearly every year. We love the enthusiasm of our volunteers, they make it a lot of fun."

Both the full and half marathons are certified and sanctioned by the USA Track and Field Association through 2033, making the event a Boston Marathon qualifier. The marathon is excited to announce that pace runners will once again be available at this year's race, sponsored by Kelley Bean Company.

Lexington, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people after locating more than 20 pounds of suspected fentanyl and cocaine during a traffic stop on I-80 near Lexington.

Sunday, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Honda CRV for speeding on I-80 near mile marker 239. During the traffic stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity.

Troopers performed a search of the vehicle and found several packages of suspected fentanyl and cocaine. The total weight of the packages was approximately 23 pounds.

The driver, Miguel De Sala Rudecindo, 25, and passenger Geudys Cabreja Nunez, 31, both of Bronx, New York, were arrested for possession of cocaine, possession of fentanyl, and possession with intent to deliver. Both were lodged in Dawson County Jail.

City of Alliance invites community to Shelbi Pitt Dedication Celebration

Lawnmowers join a neighbor’s barking dog long after birds silence early morning songs on a late spring morning. A nearly perfectly manicured front yard is not the only grass some people care about as May grows warmer. Much smaller plots garner attention when people tend to the final resting places of their loved ones.

Whether downtown parkade flowerbeds or a country cemetery I admire the unseen individuals who work behind the scenes to keep it beautiful. This year, on either side of Memorial Day, I can attest to the latter.

My family and I stopped to visit the graves of my grandparents and great uncle at the Hemingford cemetery on our way to see a play at the Fort Robinson Post Playhouse early afternoon the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. A number of cars parked along the lanes as small groups of people visited and others knelt to place flowers or perhaps a toy in memory of a son taken too soon. I assume employees from the Village were responsible for the freshly cut grass and absence of litter. The grounds continue to reflect pride and respect with recent additions (maybe not new since I last visited a few years ago) such as benches.

Walking down the rows on a rainy, misty day I recounted for my children when their grandpa and uncle had served their country as flags marked each veteran’s grave. A week later I helped gather the same flags at Calvary Cemetery just north of Alliance. The Knights of Columbus place the flags at this Catholic cemetery though I am not sure who is responsible for the same courtesy at Hemingford. At both places I paused here and there to think about the person’s life behind the flag. There were Civil War veterans who served so long ago and people I knew already gone a decade or more.

At Calvary a man asked who took care of the cemetery. I told him. This caretaker, who was in my high school graduating class, has been doing an excellent job for years as his dad did before him. That is among the benefits of serving on a cemetery committee: knowledge of how things run smoothly while having a hand in decisions.

Maybe when I was the age my son is now I remember asking grandpa about a few seemingly random items in the trunk of his maroon Honda Accord – sharp garden shears, a tiny scrub brush and plastic cups with what looked like long nails on the end. He told me about how he cared for his son’s grave at the vast veterans’ cemetery where attention to detail by the grounds crew had been slipping then. I went with him on more than one occasion to place flowers at the base of the white marble stone. Now he is there with my grandma where he knelt to snip uneven grass the trimmer missed. The names of the caretakers there I do not know, yet I hope somebody takes pride in their resting place much too far away to visit on a Memorial Day drive.

KAB: Keepers Of Marble And Concrete Angels

LIncoln, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles are warning about a scam that has targeted numerous Nebraskans today.

The scam involves a text message purportedly from the Nebraska DMV claiming that the recipient has unpaid traffic fines and that several penalties are possible unless the recipient clicks a link to pay the supposed fines.

“None of these text messages are legitimate,” said DMV Director Rhonda Lamm. “The Nebraska DMV does not send any such official notice via text message. Thank you to the many Nebraskans who have reported this scam quickly to several law enforcement agencies.”

The aim of this phishing scam is most likely to steal personal or financial information. DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK.

“Scammers can be relentless, but there’s a rule of thumb to protect yourself from this type of scam,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Never click links or provide personal or financial information on unsolicited messages. If you think the message may be legitimate, go directly to the source and initiate contact yourself rather than clicking the unsolicited link.”

By NSPLIncoln, Neb.&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol and Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles are warning about a scam that has targeted numerous Nebraskans today.The scam involves a text message purportedly from the Nebraska DMV claiming that the recipient has unpaid traffic fines and that several penalties are possible unless the recipient clicks a link to pay the supposed fines.“None of these text messages are legitimate,” said DMV Director Rhonda Lamm. “The Nebraska DMV does not send any such official notice via text message. Thank you to the many Nebraskans who have reported this scam quickly to several law enforcement agencies.”The aim of this phishing scam is most likely to steal personal or financial information. DO NOT CLICK ON THE LINK.“Scammers can be relentless, but there’s a rule of thumb to protect yourself from this type of scam,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Never click links or provide personal or financial information on unsolicited messages. If you think the message may be legitimate, go directly to the source and initiate contact yourself rather than clicking the unsolicited link.”Additional information about spotting and reporting scams can be found at the&nbsp;<a href="https://oig.ftc.gov/ftc-imposter-scams" target="_blank">Federal Trade Commission website</a>. NSP, DMV warn of widespread text message scam

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. — The spotlight shone bright on North Platte this weekend as Gabriella Swift and Makinzie Gregory were crowned the 2025 titleholders in the annual Miss Nebraska Scholarship Competition.

Swift, representing Douglas County, was named Miss Nebraska’s Teen 2025, while Gregory, representing Old West Balloon Fest, was crowned Miss Nebraska 2025 during the final night of competition. Both young women will go on to represent the Cornhusker State at the national Miss America’s Teen and Miss America competitions, respectively.

Throughout the weeklong pageant held in North Platte, contestants competed in a series of categories that highlighted their poise, performance, service, and scholarship.

During Night One, Gregory won the Evening Gown Competition, while the Miss Nebraska Talent Competition ended in a tie between Miss Douglas County Alayna Wilson and Miss Omaha Jacee Pfeifer. In the teen division, Cora Frans, Miss Midwest’s Teen, claimed the Talent Competition, and Ella-Kathryn Anderson, Miss Omaha’s Teen, won the Evening Gown Competition.

On Night Two, Swift impressed judges with her performance to win the Miss Nebraska’s Teen Talent Competition, while Gregory took top honors in Miss Nebraska Talent. Frans earned a second Evening Gown win in the teen division, and Wilson captured the Miss Evening Gown title.

Community service was also in the spotlight, with Anna Meier winning the Teen Community Service Award. In the Miss division, Alayna Wilson placed first, and Sierra Little took second.

The Miss Nebraska Scholarship Program, held annually in North Platte since 1937, empowers young women from across the state through education, leadership, and community service opportunities.
