Wally A. Seiler has announced the recent awarding of grants and scholarships totaling $7,000 by the Darold A. Newblom Foundation to one organization and seven individuals. Seiler serves as the Secretary Treasurer of the Foundation which was created under the terms of the Last Will and Testament of the late Mr. Newblom.

The organization receiving a grants is Post Playhouse, Inc., Crawford, Nebraska awarded $3,500 to benefit college student actors/technicians as a means to supplement their theatre education.

Individuals receiving scholarships, each in the amount of $500, are Alliance residents Lilli Allen, Connor Blumenthal, Jacqueline Gilbert, Emma Machado, Emily McCune, Taylee Thompson and Ayvrie Waldron.

This marks the thirty-fifth year that grants and scholarships have been given by the Newblom Foundation which was established to support activities for the moral, mental, intellectual, and physical development of young men and women in Box Butte and Dawes Counties, Nebraska; to provide scholarships for assisting students in obtaining an education; and to assist in the founding, equipping, and maintaining of associations or institutions engaged in the advancement of learning. During the past thirty-five years, the Newblom Foundation has provided funding of $424, 051.19 in support of its goals.

Grants and scholarships from the Newblom Foundation are awarded once a year. Applications for the 2026 grants and scholarships will be available from Seiler after November 1, 2025, at his home at 1208 Laramie Avenue, Alliance, Nebraska 69301.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.&nbsp; -﻿&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College will host a series of Registration Day events throughout the and summer to allow first-time college students to register for classes in the Fall 2025 semester.

Registration Days is open to all first-time college students and graduating high school seniors who plan to attend WNCC in the Fall 2025 semester. Students can sign up for classes, tour campus, discover student resources, and more. Families are welcome to join.

The events are also open to individuals who want to learn more about WNCC's academic programs, student services, and more. Admissions representatives will be on site to help with the application process and answer any questions about the admissions process.

On May 2, 2025, it was brought to my attention that Hemingford School Bond Election voters residing in Dawes County were issued ballots that failed to include the initials of an election official at the bottom of the ballot. This issue is limited only to Dawes County residents.

The Dawes County Clerk’s office will be mailing corrected ballots today to each affected voter. Return postage for these ballots has been paid.

Upon receipt of the reissued ballot, I encourage you to verify that initials of an election official are present on the bottom of your ballot prior to submitting your vote. Ballots that do not contain the initials of an election official will not be counted.

Hemingford School Bond Special Election – Dawes County Residents

On May 3, 2025 at 8:36 pm, Officers received a report of a disturbance involving a firearm in the 600 Block of East 11th Street. 

After investigation at the scene, Adrian Cross, 18, of Scottsbluff, was arrested for Terrorist Threats and Minor in Possession Alcohol. 

Victim statements advised Cross pulled what appeared to be a handgun from his waist band and pointed at multiple people. Cross was described to make statements of shooting people at the scene. A physical altercation ensued where the handgun was taken from Cross. A CO2 handgun was collected from the scene and was identified to be the weapon Cross used in the incident. 

Minor injuries were reported by Cross and one victim for scrapes and scratches from the physical altercation. 

Scottsbluff Officers were assisted by Scotts Bluff County Sheriff Office, Scottsbluff Fire, and Regional West Ambulance.

On 5/1/2025 at approximately 3:46 PM, the Alliance Police Department responded to a report of a juvenile possibly in possession of a firearm near Alliance Middle School. Officers arrived quickly and located the juvenile near 12th Street and Laramie Avenue. The item in question was determined to be an&nbsp;Orbeez-style gel toy gun, not a real firearm. The toy was confiscated, and officers spoke with the juvenile at length about the seriousness of the situation — especially the dangers of carrying or displaying anything resembling a weapon near a school.

Parents and Guardians:&nbsp;We ask for your help in reminding kids that&nbsp;toy guns can easily be mistaken for real weapons, especially from a distance or in fast-moving situations. Even though this was a toy, the response was treated as if it could have been a real threat — because safety will always be our top priority. In today’s world, there is zero tolerance for any item that causes alarm on or near school grounds. What may seem like a harmless toy can quickly escalate into a very serious situation. We appreciate the quick action of school staff and thank the community for continuing to look out for one another.

Alliance police respond to incident near Alliance Middle School

LINCOLN, NEB. – Despite a $2 billion decline from 2022, Nebraska’s agricultural exports totaled $7.9 billion in 2023, marking the third-highest export year on record. That’s according to a Nebraska Farm Bureau’s annual&nbsp;<a href="https://www.nefb.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/NEAgriculture-InternationalTrade_2023_Proof2.pdf" target="_blank">Agriculture and International Trade Report</a>&nbsp;released today.

The report, prepared by economist Jay Rempe of Rolling Prairie Economics, provides a comprehensive look at how global markets are driving and challenging the economic future of Nebraska’s farm and ranch families. According to the report, trade remains a foundational pillar of Nebraska’s agriculture-driven economy.

“Our state ranks fifth in the nation for agricultural exports, and we lead the country in beef exports. Yet, the story behind the numbers is about the Nebraska farm families whose livelihoods depend on access to global markets,” said Mark McHargue, president of Nebraska Farm Bureau. “When trade thrives, Nebraska thrives. That’s why it’s critical that we push for new trade agreements and work to eliminate barriers that unfairly limit our access to overseas markets.”

The report, released annually since 2017, examines the most recent data provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), sourced from the year 2023 and includes county-level estimates showing the importance of trade at the grassroots level. Cuming and Platte Counties led the state in total agricultural export value, each exceeding $200 million, while Phelps County topped the list for per-farm export value at an estimated $474,832. Counties like Kearney, Fillmore, and Boone also ranked among the highest per-farm export values, a reflection of the size, productivity, and diversity of their farming operations.

“Trade translates directly to income for farm and ranch families,” said Rempe. “Whether it's corn from Dawson County, soybeans from York County, or beef from the Sandhills, the ability to sell these products overseas can make the difference between a good year and a tough one for many Nebraska producers.”

According to the report, soybeans, corn, and beef remained solidly entrenched as Nebraska’s top agricultural exports, accounting for nearly two-thirds of total exports. Nebraska ranked first in the nation for beef exports at $1.59 billion. The state ranked third in corn exports and seventh in soybeans. Exports of pork and soybean meal were among the few that increased in value, rising 3% and 12%, respectively.

While commodity prices and increased global competition from countries like Brazil contributed to export declines, Nebraska producers remain competitive and resilient. However, trade uncertainty and tariffs continue to pose significant challenges.

Floyd’s Truck Center Acquires Nebraska Truck Center

“He (Pope Francis) is very close to us,” said Father Gabriel Romanelli. “All the time he called us throughout this war – this horrible war – for more than a year and a half, he would call for peace and send his blessings to all of Gaza’s people.”

Every day since the beginning of the war in Palestine 18 months ago, the Pope rang the Holy Family Church in Gaza City around 8 pm. Father Romanelli is the pastor of Gaza's only Catholic parish. On most days, the call lasted about 15 minutes, during which the Pope would speak with the church leaders and some of the Palestinians sheltering at the church. His final call, on the Saturday before Easter, lasted less than a minute.

Last week the world was saddened by the death of Pope Francis.

Why has this Pope moved the world in ways no other has? Even those of us who are not Catholic watched his actions and read his messages.

Elected pontiff in 2013, Pope Francis had been archbishop in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He represented a region that was not Europe or an area formerly controlled by the Roman Empire, and he saw the world through a different lens. As a Jesuit, he focused on the poor and marginalized. He was concerned about violence throughout the world and about the effects of climate change, especially on third-world nations.

I remember Christmas messages where Pope Francis reminded us that the Son of God was an outcast who faced rejection and lived in poverty. He reached out to the poor, the forgotten, the invisible. He talked about Joseph, Mary, and their baby Jesus fleeing to Egypt. Migrants, refugees.

This week, as I followed stories about Pope Francis, I learned that his family was also migrants, refugees. His grandparents and father, devout Catholics, fled from Italy under the rise of Mussolini's Fascist regime.

According to the New York Times obituary, he organized food kitchens, tripled the number of priests assigned to the slums, and built schools and drug rehabilitation centers during Argentina's 2001-02 economic crisis. Before every Easter, he visited prison inmates, AIDS patients or older people, a practice he continued during his papacy. We've all seen pictures of him washing feet during Holy Week.

Since I am not a Catholic, I cannot speak to the changes in the church under Pope Francis. But I am a member of the Alliance Community/Poverty Task Force. I have felt his nudges (sometimes elbows) as we work to provide assistance to the people in our community who do not have enough resources to support themselves. The Pope appealed to us all to "use the resources available to help the needy, to fight hunger, and to encourage initiatives that promote development."

His Easter, 2025, message, which Pope Francis was unable to personally deliver, included prayers for these war-torn nations: Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, western Balkans, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan; and Myanmar after their devastating earthquake. His Christmas message included prayers for these regions, as well as the African nations whose people were dying of a measles outbreak.

"What a great thirst for death, for killing, we witness each day in the many conflicts raging in different parts of our world? How much violence we see, often even within families, directed at women and children? How much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized, and migrants?"

Before every Easter, he visited prison inmates, AIDS patients or older people, a practice he continued during his papacy. We've all seen pictures of him washing feet during Holy Week.Since I am not a Catholic, I cannot speak to the changes in the church under Pope Francis. But I am a member of the Alliance Community/Poverty Task Force. I have felt his nudges (sometimes elbows) as we work to provide assistance to the people in our community who do not have enough resources to support themselves. The Pope appealed to us all to "use the resources available to help the needy, to fight hunger, and to encourage initiatives that promote development."His Easter, 2025, message, which Pope Francis was unable to personally deliver, included prayers for these war-torn nations: Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, western Balkans, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sudan, and South Sudan; and Myanmar after their devastating earthquake. His Christmas message included prayers for these regions, as well as the African nations whose people were dying of a measles outbreak."What a great thirst for death, for killing, we witness each day in the many conflicts raging in different parts of our world? How much violence we see, often even within families, directed at women and children? How much contempt is stirred up at times towards the vulnerable, the marginalized, and migrants?"

CHADRON, Neb. — The Nebraska Department of Labor, in partnership with Nebraska VR, Dawes County Veterans Service Office, and the Hot Springs, S.D., VA, will host a Hiring Event and Veterans Stand Down on Thursday, May 29.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Dawes County Fairgrounds, 300 E. Norfolk Ave., in Chadron. The hiring portion will run from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Stand Down will offer essential supplies for veterans, including blankets, coats, duffle bags and more, provided by the Hot Springs VA. A variety of support resources will also be available, such as caregiver support, homeless services, suicide prevention, intimate partner violence assistance, and veterans justice outreach.

On April 28, 2025 at 8:15 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department was notified of a two-vehicle motor vehicle collision with suspected injuries at the intersection of Avenue B and South Beltline Highway West.

 Investigation discovered a Lincoln SUV was Westbound on South Belt Highway West occupied by five and a Ford SUV occupied by two was Southbound on Avenue B. 

The Ford SUV failed to stop at the Stop sign and entered the intersection, striking the Lincoln in the passenger side of the vehicle. This caused the Lincoln to spin and strike a sign in the median of South Beltline then came to rest in the Eastbound lanes.

 Driver of the Lincoln was not wearing a seatbelt and sustained an injury to the head. Three juvenile passengers in the back of the Lincoln SUV reported injuries to abdomen and pelvis as well as neck injury. One of the passengers injured was not wearing a seatbelt. 

The driver and juvenile passengers were transported by Regional West Ambulance to Regional West Medical Center for treatment. The driver and passenger of the Ford SUV reported no injuries. 

The driver Elizabeth Johnson, 45 of Gering, was cited for Stop Sign Violation and No Valid Registration. 

Both vehicles were towed from the scene due to disabling damages. The intersection of Avenue B and South Beltline Highway West was closed for about one hour for the investigation and clearing the roadway of debris.

Scottsbluff Police Department were assisted by Scottsbluff Fire Department and Regional West Ambulance.
