In June 2023, BLIXT received a National Endowment for the Arts Creative Forces grant to support Not Too Far Distant and collaborative engagement activities for veterans, their families, and communities. The revised and updated production features a cast of five actors and premiered at the Lied Center for Performing Arts in November 2023. Not Too Far Distant by Becky Boesen will perform in 10 Nebraska communities in 2024-25, including Lincoln, Albion, Gothenburg, Omaha, Red Cloud, Fremont, Valentine, Nebraska City, Sidney, and Alliance.

Not Too Far Distant is inspired by the real letters of Nebraskan Staff Sergeant Clarence Williams, a member of the 42nd Infantry during WWII who helped liberate the Dachau concentration camp. Sgt. Williams wrote a letter almost daily to his wife Gretchen, and through the extraordinary work of Dr. Beth Dotan in collaboration with History Nebraska, the Center for Digital Research in the Humanities and the Harris Center for Judaic Studies at University of Nebraska – Lincoln, those letters and other assets have been preserved and are available through an online educational portal: Nebraska Stories of Humanity: Holocaust Survivors &amp; WWII Veterans, Network Portal &amp;amp; Educational Website.

New drama ‘Not Too Far Distant’ brings history to life in Alliance

People my age grew up with a map of the world that had been created by Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569. But in 2024, Nebraska law mandated that those Mercator projection maps needed to be replaced by new designs, recommending either the Gall-Peters Projection or the AuthaGraph World Map. Schools do not have to destroy old materials or textbooks, but new map purchases must comply.

What is going on? State Sen. Justin Wayne of Omaha proposed the legislation, arguing that Mercator projection maps have given generations of students a misleading understanding of the world. I looked into the research prepared by GIS Analyst Tim Erickson for the Nebraska Legislature in 2024.

The Mercator map was designed for world exploration and marine navigation. It gave us the idea of north at the top, and the directions of east, south, and west being consistent on maps. Angles are correct, so it works well for navigation and continues to be used by Google Maps for local areas.

What is the problem? When we take a round map like the globe and flatten it into a rectangle, we distort lengths and widths. The countries near the poles, like Canada and Russia, appear much larger than they really are. Those at the equator appear much smaller. Erickson uses the example of Greenland to show this distortion. On the Mercator map, Greenland appears to be the same size as Africa. In reality, Africa’s area is actually 14 times larger than Greenland! It looks like Alaska and Australia have the same area; Australia is four times larger.

Remember that the 1500's were the Age of Exploration. Tiny European nations set out to colonize the world to obtain resources, and the Mercator map was designed for them. Having their nations appear much larger, and the areas of Africa, Southern Asia, and South America appear much smaller than reality helped to justify their actions.

The Gall-Peters Projection, one of the new maps recommended in Nebraska Law, was first developed by James Gall, a Scottish clergyman, in 1855. German Arno Peters brought attention to it in the 1970's. He recommended the switch to the Gall map as being fairer to equatorial regions.

The Gall-Peters Projection gained support among groups advocating for social justice and a more accurate representation of the world. By accurately portraying the sizes of developing countries, it "challenges historical biases and promotes a more egalitarian perspective," meaning that it is more fair to third world nations.

One of the criticisms of the Gall-Peters map is that, although areas are accurate, shapes are distorted. It is not as attractive, and it is not as useful in navigation.

The AuthaGraph World Map appears to me to be the biggest change in maps, because it doesn't maintain the rule of north being the top. Architect Hajime Narukawa and his collaborators invented it in 1999. The map is made by dividing a spherical surface into 96 triangles. Those are transferred into a tetrahedron shape which keeps the area's proportions. Finally the tetrahedron is unfolded into a rectangle to make the map.

According to&nbsp;<a href="http://authograph.com/" target="_blank">authograph.com</a>, the AuthaGraph world map can be tiled in any direction without visible seams. Any region can be placed at the center. "Just as the center of global politics, economy and culture is shifted and decentralized, this map tries to reflect such new global vision in the 21st century."

The Nebraska Department of Education shows the Equal-Earth Projection Map and has links to the other two. This map looks similar to the ones we are used to. It shows continents and countries at their true sizes and keeps the shapes and directions we are familiar with. The sides are rounded to stress the shape of the earth.

Every map has advantages and disadvantages. How can you tell if you are looking at one of the newer designs. Remember that Africa is more than three times the size of the United States. If your map doesn't show that, it's probably time to retire it!

The residence halls and dining services will remain open.

According to the National Weather Service, an extreme cold warning is in effect for the city of Chadron and surrounding areas beginning this evening at 10 p.m. The warning expires Thursday at 11 a.m. Tonight, wind chills may be as low as negative 35 degrees. The National Weather Service recommends if individuals must go outside, they dress in layers, including a hat, face mask, and gloves.

Chadron State College campus closure

February 17, 2025 (OMAHA, Neb.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is heartbroken to announce that a Nebraska State Trooper has been killed in the line of duty today.

The&nbsp; Trooper was Kyle McAcy #302, who gave his life in the line of duty this morning while assisting motorists who had been involved in a crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland. 

Preliminary investigation shows that Trooper McAcy was responding with other troopers to a crash on Interstate 80 near mile marker 424, between Ashland and Greenwood. During that response, Trooper McAcy was outside his patrol unit and was struck by a snowplow.

Trooper McAcy has been a dedicated Trooper for 10 years and an incredible friend to countless people. Please keep his family, friends, colleagues, and all who have the honor of knowing him in your hearts following this unimaginable loss.&nbsp; Trooper McAcy served in North Platte prior to taking post on the eastern side of the state.

“Our NSP family is devastated today,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Kyle was a dedicated trooper, a devoted public servant, and most importantly a good friend to many in Omaha and beyond. His loss is being felt by countless people. Please keep his family, friends, colleagues, and community in your hearts as they deal with this unimaginable loss.”

Trooper McAcy, 31, was a ten-year veteran of the Nebraska State Patrol. He was a graduate of Camp 56 and wore badge #302. Trooper McAcy has served in the Patrol Division, Carrier Enforcement, and as a Crisis Negotiator. He was stationed in Omaha.

NSP has asked the Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office to conduct the crash investigation. As winter weather conditions continue across the state, NSP urges all motorists to be safe if they must travel.&nbsp;

Former North Platte Trooper killed while responding to crash on Interstate 80 near Ashland

The City of Chadron has declared a snow emergency, effective from Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 4:00 A.M. until Tuesday, 10:00 A.M. on February 18, 2025, and will remain in effect until all the snow in the streets has been removed. 

When a snow emergency has been declared all vehicles, trailers, and obstructions must be removed from the designated snow emergency routes. Vehicles, trailers, or obstructions remaining on the routes may be ticketed or towed at the owners' expense. &nbsp;More information about the snow emergency routes is available on the City’s website.

Chadron Hospital: Notice to patients about immigration enforcement

CHADRON – A lifelong connection to agriculture and a passion for education led Sydney Linse to the unique 3+1 agriculture education program between Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Growing up on her family’s ranch near Springview, Nebraska, Linse was actively involved in 4-H and FFA. Those experiences helped her recognize the importance of advocating for agriculture. Initially studying elementary education at Chadron State, she soon realized she missed being part of the agriculture industry. Thankfully, the 3+1 program provided an opportunity to combine her interests.

“I loved the small-town feel of Chadron State,” Linse said. “It was a great fit, and the program allowed me to take my agriculture courses there before transitioning to UNL for agriculture education-specific coursework.”

In 2023, an&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/news/2023/csc-and-unl-announce-31-ag-education-program.html" target="_blank">agreement</a>&nbsp;between Chadron State College and the University of Nebraska Lincoln was revised so students seeking an agriculture education degree can attend three years at CSC and then transfer to UNL for the final year.

During her time at UNL, she connected with other future agriculture educators and gained valuable insights into the field. That experience, combined with student teaching at Valentine High School, confirmed her passion for the profession.

“I could not have asked for a better experience,” she said. “I learned how to provide students with hands-on learning, manage a classroom, and run a successful FFA program.”

One of the most rewarding moments came when her students excelled in FFA competitions.

“As an agriculture educator, you spend a lot of time preparing students for contests,” Linse said. “Seeing them succeed is incredibly fulfilling.”

She believes the 3+1 program offers students flexibility and diverse learning opportunities. For those considering the program, she emphasizes the importance of advocating for their education and finding strong advisors.

Linse sees agriculture education as providing essential skills.

“Not only do students learn about agriculture, but they also develop communication and leadership skills that are valuable in any career,” she said.

By sharing her experience, Linse hopes to inspire others to consider agriculture education as a career.

“We will always need more agriculture teachers,” she said. “I hope promoting this program encourages more students to enter this amazing field.”

The University of Nebraska Medical Center has announced its fall 2024 dean’s list for students enrolled in nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and the allied health professions of medical imaging and therapeutic sciences program and medical laboratory science.&nbsp;&nbsp;

To qualify for the dean’s list, nursing and the allied health students must be enrolled for 12 or more hours during the semester and have a grade point average of 3.75 or above. To qualify for the pharmacy dean’s list, students must place in the top 20% of their class and maintain a grade point average of 3.5 or above. Dental students must be in the top 10% of their class for the semester.&nbsp;

The following is a list of students, their hometowns and the colleges in which they are enrolled.&nbsp;The names of students who chose not to be listed due to privacy reasons — protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act — are not included.&nbsp;&nbsp;

President’s Day Closures of City of Alliance Facilities

Alliance, Ne – According to the Alliance Police Department, officers
were dispatched around 3am on Saturday morning to Box Butte General Hospital in
Alliance for a report of a male who had been assaulted. Officers arrived and observed
the victim to have sustained possible life-threatening injuries. The initial
investigation revealed that the suspect drove the victim to the hospital after
the assault. Witnesses stated that the suspect punched the victim repeatedly
after a verbal argument escalated.

The victim fell to the ground, striking his head on the
pavement. The suspect continued to strike the victim several times until a
witness intervened. The suspect then drove the victim to the hospital and did
not disclose that he had caused the injuries to the victim. The suspect was identified
as Dreyson McCormick of Alliance. Following interview with all witnesses,
McCormick was located and taken into custody without incident. The victim
remains in critical condition.

McCormick is currently being held in the Box Butte County
Jail where he is facing a charge of First-Degree Assault.

witness intervened. The suspect then drove the victim to the hospital and did
not disclose that he had caused the injuries to the victim. The suspect was identified
as Dreyson McCormick of Alliance. Following interview with all witnesses,
McCormick was located and taken into custody without incident. The victim
remains in critical condition.<figure>

Flu can cause mild to severe illness, and at times can lead to death. Flu symptoms usually come on suddenly. People who have flu often feel some or all of these signs and symptoms:

 fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone with flu will have a fever)

 some people may have vomiting and diarrhea, though this is more common in children than adults.

“PPHD’s school, hospital, and wastewater surveillance is showing high rates of Influenza A around the area,” said Jessica Davies, Panhandle Public Health District Director.

Davies added, “If you test positive for Influenza A, it is important to remain at home until you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, and your symptoms have been improving for 24 hours.”

Most people who get flu will recover in a few days to less than two weeks, but some people will develop complications (such as pneumonia) as a result of flu, some of which can be life- threatening and result in death.

Antiviral drugs like oseltamivir (Tamiflu) should be used as early as possible in people who have flu-like illness. For those who aren’t sick, preventive measures along with flu vaccines can help prevent flu and other winter illnesses.

In Nebraska, there have been a total of 34 flu-related deaths so far this season. Influenza A is the most prevalent strain of flu this season, with a total of 10,658 cases reported statewide so far.

 Avoiding contact with people who are sick

 Covering your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing

 Practice health habits such as rest, drinking fluids, and staying physically active

Lincoln, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to over 200 weather-related incidents during the most recent snowstorm.

As the snow fell across Nebraska, troopers remained busy across the entire state. Troopers investigated 34 crashes, performed 161 motorist assists, and helped other agencies with 18 responses from the evening hours of Tuesday through the Thursday morning commute.

After a bitterly cold start to Thursday, frigid temps are in the forecast for most of next week. NSP advises all motorists to be prepared during winter driving conditions and extreme cold.

“Exposure in extremely cold temperatures can be dangerous after only a short amount of time,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “Everyone on the road should have a plan in case they become stranded. Keep a winter survival kit in your vehicle and have a full tank of gas before you hit the road.”

CHADRON - The Theatre Department at Chadron State College will perform Ruthless! The Musical from Feb. 27 to March 1 at 7 p.m. and March 2 at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Black Box Theatre.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Ruthless! The Musical follows ambitious, spotlight-seeking characters on their journeys of becoming stars, according to director of the play and Theatre adjunct faculty member David Craven. All of the characters are focused on themselves and their own successes, which encourages a competitive nature. Craven said the musical will be full of dark comedy, catchy tunes, and outrageous characters. The performance will poke fun at the genre of musical dramedy and is recommended for older children and adults with a film rating of PG.

“I am approaching this as a satirical musical dramedy. It could be played as a farce or a melodrama, but I want the actors to create real characters that have depth, and yet play into the ridiculous circumstances they find themselves in. This is proving to be a fun challenge for each actor, and they get to shine. Almost all of the technical crew are in the show. Everyone in our department is serving double duty, which means we all have a big investment in the production,” Craven said.

Chloe Shatswell of Rapid City, South Dakota, is learning to balance the roles of assistant stage manager and cast member.

“Although I have experience within stage management, I don’t have a lot of experience as an actor which is an exciting new challenge. I am enjoying juggling these two hats during the rehearsal process,” Shatswell said.

Other cast members have commented on the comedic aspect of the production on the CSC Theatre Instagram page.

“This show is a hilarious comedy all about the insane world of fame. The humor is as sharp as a tack and hilarious songs to boot,” Jarret Buchholz of Arnold, Nebraska, said.

Riley Perry of Box Elder, South Dakota, believes audiences should view this production for multiple reasons.

“Ruthless! is a hilarious show filled with lots of fun, laughter, and a chaotic, in a good way, storyline,” Perry said.

Craven recognized retired professor Scott Cavin for his help with the production.

“Our commitment is a reflection of Scott Cavin, who retired last year, and is still a driving force for theatre at Chadron State College, for over 28 years. We have all worked with him and used lessons he taught us as students or peers. He is still advising us through email, and we couldn’t be more thankful,” Craven said.

The Musical from Feb. 27 to March 1 at 7 p.m. and March 2 at 2 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Black Box Theatre.&nbsp;&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/academics/theatre/seatreservation/" target="_blank">Tickets</a>&nbsp;are free and open to the public on the theatre web page&nbsp;<a href="http://www.csc.edu/academics/theatre/" target="_blank">csc.edu/academics/theatre</a>/. Reserved seating is encouraged since seats are limited.Ruthless! The Musical follows ambitious, spotlight-seeking characters on their journeys of becoming stars, according to director of the play and Theatre adjunct faculty member David Craven. All of the characters are focused on themselves and their own successes, which encourages a competitive nature. Craven said the musical will be full of dark comedy, catchy tunes, and outrageous characters. The performance will poke fun at the genre of musical dramedy and is recommended for older children and adults with a film rating of PG.“I am approaching this as a satirical musical dramedy. It could be played as a farce or a melodrama, but I want the actors to create real characters that have depth, and yet play into the ridiculous circumstances they find themselves in. This is proving to be a fun challenge for each actor, and they get to shine. Almost all of the technical crew are in the show.
