Alliance students honored for Academic All State - NCPA and NSAA

On February 4th, 2025, the Alliance Police Department received a complaint regarding a male pointing a firearm at an individual. The initial investigation revealed that the victim reportedly went to a residence on the 500 block of Platte Avenue to ask about a dog that was possibly up for adoption. It was reported that the suspect engaged in a short conversation before retrieving a shotgun, loading a shell, pointing the shotgun at the victim and pulling the trigger. For unknown reasons, the weapon did not fire and the victim fled the scene. Officers attempted to locate the suspect but were unsuccessful. The suspect was identified as Kory A Rasmussen W/M DOB: 07/24/1988. Additional investigations were conducted, and a search warrant and arrest warrant were drafted for the individual and the residence.

On February 8th, 2025, at approximately 6:30am officers on patrol observed the suspect operating a motor vehicle northbound on Box Butte Avenue. Officers conducted a high-risk traffic stop on the vehicle in the 1200 Block of Box Butte Avenue, where the suspect was taken into custody without incident. Officers located a handgun on the suspect, as well as a long gun in the vehicle. The suspect was transported to the Box Butte County Jail.

Officers then proceeded to the suspect's residence, where the crime had occurred, and executed the search warrant. In the initial clearing of the residence, officers located drug paraphernalia in plain view. The search warrant was amended, and executed on the residence, which yielded quantifiable amounts of both methamphetamine and marijuana, evidence of drug distribution, two more long guns, and several items of drug paraphernalia. Those items were seized as evidence.

The suspect, Kory A Rasmussen, is currently being held in the Box Butte County Jail, facing charges of:

• Possession of a Firearm While Committing a Felony

• Possession of a Firearm w/ FELONY 2 Drug Violation

• Possession or Use of Drug Paraphernalia

APD executes search warrant resulting in multiple charges

North Platte, Neb. - No injuries were reported after a Sunday morning Union Pacific grain train derailed outside of North Platte according to officials.&nbsp;

According to Union Pacific Spokesperson Robynn Tysve, the Sunday morning derailment occurred around 10:30am central time. The train that derailed was a loaded grain train.&nbsp;

The derailment occurred near N Airport Rd and E Long School Rd and crews are on scene cleaning up the derailment. The N Airport Rd will be closed. Tysve stated to the POST that no one was hurt, and no hazmat is involved&nbsp;

Local first responder agencies assisted on scene included the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, North Platte Police Department, North Platte Fire Department, Union Pacific.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Sunday's derailment was the <a href="https://northplattepost.com/posts/5dd1cb1f-ab44-452e-b6c5-d21a50436eb8" target="_blank">second one to occur in the greater Western Nebraska area when a Intermodel train derailed outside of Dix</a>. That accident occurred around 7:30am.&nbsp;

Union Pacific is investigating a derailment that occurred Sunday around 7:30 a.m. CT just west of Dix, Nebraska. 

No one was hurt, and the cause is under investigation.

Alliance High School Activities Calendar: Week of February 10th

NORTH PLATTE, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested three people after locating 110 pounds of suspected methamphetamine and 85 pounds of suspected marijuana in traffic stops this week on Interstate 80.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Kia Forte as it was traveling eastbound on I-80 near North Platte. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

A search of the vehicle revealed several large packages of suspected methamphetamine inside suitcases in the trunk of the vehicle. The total weight of the methamphetamine was 110 pounds. Troopers also located a small amount of marijuana, suspected drug money, and four counterfeit $100 bills.

The driver, Yafet Kidane Berhe, 27, and passenger Douglas Cameron, 33, both of Toronto, Canada, were arrested for possession of methamphetamine, possession with intent to deliver, possession of money for a controlled substance, and possession of marijuana – less than one ounce. Both men were lodged in Lincoln County Jail.

Thursday, at approximately 11:30 a.m., a trooper performed a traffic stop on a Volkswagen Jetta at it was traveling eastbound on I-80 near Overton. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

Troopers searched the vehicle and located 85 pounds of suspected marijuana concealed in trash bags in the trunk. Troopers also located a handgun.

The driver, Matthew Maly, 31, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, was arrested for possession of marijuana – more than one pound, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm during a drug violation, no driver’s license, and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was lodged in Dawson County Jail.

On Thursday, February 6, 2025, at 3:48 p.m., Deputies responded to a reported injury accident/rollover east of the intersection of Sugar Factory Road and Lake Minatare Road. Callers reported that the vehicle was in the ditch, on its top and smoking. &nbsp;

A few minutes later, witnesses stated that the occupants were out of the vehicle, and one was complaining of shoulder pain and the other of a headache.

Investigation revealed that the juvenile male driver and his juvenile male passenger were eastbound on Lake Minatare Road in an Acura MDX exceeding the speed limit.&nbsp; The vehicle slid through the intersection at Sugar Factory Road and eventually lost control and rolled 6.5 times before coming to rest on its top south of the road.&nbsp; Witnesses at the scene assisted the two occupants in getting out of the vehicle.&nbsp;

The driver, age 15, from rural Minatare, was transported by family to Regional West Medical Center.&nbsp; His injuries appear to be minor and non-life-threatening.

He was cited for Willful Reckless Driving and Violating a Stop Sign.&nbsp;

The passenger, a male age 16 from rural Minatare, was transported to Regional West Medical Center by Regional West ambulance.&nbsp; His injuries also appear to be minor and non-life-threatening.

Seat belts were in use and there is&nbsp;no&nbsp;indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.&nbsp;

Callers reported that the vehicle was in the ditch, on its top and smoking. &nbsp;A few minutes later, witnesses stated that the occupants were out of the vehicle, and one was complaining of shoulder pain and the other of a headache.Investigation revealed that the juvenile male driver and his juvenile male passenger were eastbound on Lake Minatare Road in an Acura MDX exceeding the speed limit.&nbsp; The vehicle slid through the intersection at Sugar Factory Road and eventually lost control and rolled 6.5 times before coming to rest on its top south of the road.&nbsp; Witnesses at the scene assisted the two occupants in getting out of the vehicle.&nbsp;The driver, age 15, from rural Minatare, was transported by family to Regional West Medical Center.&nbsp; His injuries appear to be minor and non-life-threatening.He was cited for Willful Reckless Driving and Violating a Stop Sign.&nbsp;The passenger, a male age 16 from rural Minatare, was transported to Regional West Medical Center by Regional West ambulance.&nbsp; His injuries also appear to be minor and non-life-threatening.Seat belts were in use and there is&nbsp;no&nbsp;indication that drugs or alcohol were involved.&nbsp;

7 th Street Dance Studio has been committed to giving back to their community and were delighted to give their entire ticket sales from their 2024 Christmas recital, “Winter Wishes”, to this wonderful organization.

Western Community Health Resources Respite Program is a short break for family caregivers who are caring for someone with special needs. Many times, children with special needs are those who receive special education services at school or who are seeing a mental health provider. The respite program applies to all ages and all disabilities so if you are caring for an adult or elderly person who has special needs such as an intellectual disability or Alzheimer’s disease, please reach out. Respite funding can be used at Community Organizations who partner with us such as 7 th Street Dance or by having an individual provider come in to watch the child. We have seen how valuable respite can be at a Community Organization. The child can do activities with their peers and the parent still gets that short break. We assist individuals in applying for state funding, most often through the Lifespan Respite Subsidy Program. For those who do not qualify, we have implemented a grant funded program. The funds received from 7 th Street Dance will help those families who receive funding through their grant program.

Their little studio has raised just over $18,000 with their annual benefit Christmas recital since 2019. “I started this as my mission to teach my students the importance of sharing their talents and supporting their community” says Lori Davis, studio owner and artistic director. “Dance is so much more than steps. It’s commitment, accountability, confidence, working together and helping each other succeed. I am very proud of the work we do and I love our little studio with all my heart!”

CHADRON – Longtime historical researcher and interpreter Bill Gwaltney will present Beyond the Pale: African Americans in the Fur Trade of the Far West, at the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center Tuesday at 7 p.m. The event is co-sponsored by the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Galaxy Series. Admission is free and open to the public.

Gwaltney, a member of the Fur Trade Museum east of Chadron, plans to speak about the diversity of the fur trade industry while specifically addressing black trappers and traders on the northern and southern plains, and the far west.

A seventh-generation American from Washington D.C., Gwaltney has extensive experience with the history of the fur trade as a historian, interpreter, and contributor. He has established fur trade encampments, including the Mountain Man Outpost and Bent’s Old Fur Trade Encampment, worked as a technical advisor for historical films, instructed students and museum parishioners, and belonged to numerous boards related to museums or western history.

Throughout his professional career, Gwaltney served in a variety of roles for the National Park Service. He was a museum curator, a seasonal interpreter, a ranger, interpretive specialist, superintendent at Fort Laramie National Historic Site and Booker T. Washington National Monument, and the Chief of Interpretation at Rocky Mountain National Park.

Gwaltney has been involved with more than 50 Civil War interpretive public events and more than 100 fur trade interpretive events. He has remained involved with the Boy Scouts of America as a scoutmaster, earned numerous awards and commendations for his interpretive work, and recently made a historical replica of a Derringer flintlock trade rifle with hand tools.

Food insecurity has been a major national problem. We have done a remarkable job of providing access to food in Alliance, and we have every right to be proud of that fact.

How can the hungry get help? Five days a week, hot meals are provided in Alliance to anyone who shows up, no questions or judgment. Monday through Thursday volunteers cook at Community Table; 11:30-12:30, at the Masonic Center, 123 West 3rd Street. On Thursdays a sack lunch is handed out for Friday. And on Saturday, people are invited to dine at the Haven on the Bricks, 508 Box Butte.

Our schools all offer free or reduced-price lunches, based on household income. Families need to fill out an application to determine eligibility. Some schools also provide breakfast. The Backpack Program provides a bag of food for these children in our public schools for the weekend. Head Start children also receive backpacks for the weekend.

Food pantries, both mobile and on-site, are offered by different agencies for people who are income-eligible. Applications are available on their websites or at their offices in Alliance or Chadron.

Northwest Community Action Partnership (NCAP) has the Extra Helpings Food Pantry at 1028 E. Third St., Bldg C (3rd and Flack). The pantry is open on Mondays and Wednesdays, and there are income requirements. Call 308-762-4960 for information.

Western Community Health Resources (WCHR) at 619 Box Butte in Alliance offers a mobile food pantry for income-eligible people who are 60 or older. Nebraska&nbsp;Women, Infants &amp; Children&nbsp;Nutrition (WIC) provides nutrition information and healthy food at no cost to help keep pregnant women, infants, and children under five healthy. Again, there are income guidelines. Call 308-762-3696 for information.

The Break Free Agape Fellowship Food Pantry is at 214 W. 10th in Alliance. Call 308-641-6694 to make an appointment.

Native Futures at 217 Box Butte in Alliance offers the Community Response Program for families with children under age 18 who need general assistance. 308-458-7795.

The Alliance Senior Center has low-cost meals available at noon Monday-Friday. Financial Assistance is available through the Office of Aging. Call 308-762-8774 for information.

Throughout the United States people rely on SNAP benefits, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. This is the program that used to be called food stamps. Eligible households are issued an EBT card to use when purchasing food. Applications are available through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services,&nbsp;<a href="http://dhhs.ne.gov/pages/accessnebraska.aspx" target="_blank">http://dhhs.ne.gov/pages/accessnebraska.aspx</a>.

Grocery Kart participates in a program called Double Up Food Bucks. When people use their SNAP/EBT Card, Double&nbsp;Up matches their fresh fruit and vegetable purchases dollar for dollar, up to $20 a day. The shopper receives Double Up Food Bucks as a register coupon to redeem next time they purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. That means that families who are eligible for SNAP can get twice the fresh produce. No additional sign-up is required.

Last year the Nebraska Legislature passed Summer EBT benefits. SNAP-eligible families receive $120 per child for the summer period when school lunches are not available.

During the next few months the Nebraska Legislature is considering some bills which relate to SNAP benefits:

•&nbsp;&nbsp;LB192 would maintain current income guidelines for SNAP eligibility. We’ve all seen how inflation has hit grocery prices! If our state rolls back income guidelines, 4,500 households in Nebraska will be affected.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;LB319: Currently people with drug felony convictions have a lifetime ban prohibiting them from receiving SNAP benefits. LB319 would help their families and their reentry into society by ending this ban.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;LB656: SNAP currently has work requirements for most recipients. This bill would implement additional requirements.

•&nbsp;&nbsp;LB46 would allow elderly, disabled, and homeless people to purchase meals from participating, approved restaurants using SNAP benefits.

The Legislature will also consider LB14, the Hunger Free Schools Act. If passed, this legislation would make breakfast and lunch in all schools, public and private, free to all students. LB375, the Grocer Reinvestment Option Act, would provide assistance to independently owned grocery stores.

It is a travesty that in our great nation, so many people have to deal with hunger. Here in Nebraska, and especially in Alliance, we are working hard to make sure everyone has enough to eat.

Attorney General Mike Hilgers announced today that a Minatare woman who owns Campbell Pharmacy in Oshkosh, Nebraska, was sentenced to two years of probation and ordered to pay&nbsp;$76,963.90&nbsp;in restitution to Nebraska Medicaid after pleading guilty to one count of filing false Medicaid claims.

Joan Kicken, 65, was charged with one count of Fraudulently Obtaining a Payment on Behalf of a Recipient of Medical Assistance, a class IV felony. The maximum punishment for that crime is two years of imprisonment. There is no minimum. A second charge of forgery was dismissed in return for her guilty plea. Additionally, her pharmacist’s license has been revoked.

A joint investigation by state and federal officials found that Kicken submitted false claims to Nebraska Medicaid for prescription drugs that were not authorized by a medical practitioner. She was paid $76,963.90 for those false claims.

This case was investigated by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office, the Office of Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and the Drug Enforcement Administration and prosecuted by the Nebraska Attorney General’s Office.
