Nebraska Extension Educator Jessica Groskopf will discuss the basis, bears, bulls, long, short, and more in the workshop and use real audio and video examples. The workshop will help you decode the “market talk.”&nbsp;

“With harvest complete, it is time for farmers to develop a marketing plan,” said Groskopf. “This workshop is an opportunity to look at the coming year and the forces driving the current grain market conditions.”

City of Chadron ACE/Keno Community Betterment Grant funding available

&nbsp;(Lincoln, Neb.) – The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) will hold a public hearing regarding the preliminary design and draft Environmental Assessment (EA) for a four-lane expressway along US Highway 26 (US-26) and Nebraska Link 62A (L-62A) in Scotts Bluff and Morrill counties in Nebraska.  

LOCATION: Minatare Elementary School Gymnasium, 805 7th St, Minatare, NE 

NDOT will give a formal presentation at 6:00 PM, with an open house to follow until 7:30 PM.  

Identified as Minatare - US-385, the proposed project would expand the existing two-lane highway to a four-lane expressway, separated by a depressed median.  This project is approximately 18.5 miles in length, starting on US-26 just west of Minatare’s Main Street and extending east to the junction of US-26 and L-62A. 

The project would continue east on L-62A to the junction with US Highway 385 (US-385). The intersections would be improved and there would be controlled access throughout the project.   

A draft EA has been prepared for this project and is available for public review at the following locations:  

• NDOT Headquarters (1500 Nebraska Parkway, Lincoln, NE) 

• FHWA Nebraska Division (100 Centennial Mall N, Ste 200, Lincoln, NE) 

• NDOT District 5 Headquarters (140375 Rundell Rd, Gering, NE)  

• Minatare Public Library (309 Main St, Minatare, NE)

Nebraska DOT to host Public Hearing for Minatare - US-385 Project

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College hosted the 11th annual Alumni &amp; Friends banquet and awards ceremony, in Scottsbluff.

WNCC's Alumni committee presents six awards each year including the Cara Perkins Meritorious Service award, Outstanding Young Alumnus, Family Pride, Outstanding Alumnus, Lifetime Achievement, and Friend of the College.

"As the Alumni Director, I am privileged to connect with former WNCC students both far and wide," WNCC Alumni &amp; Stewardship Director Mary Sheffield said. "WNCC has a special place in the hearts of so many. It is an honor, each year, to recognize a few individuals and businesses that do so much to serve the college and our mission."

The Cara Perkins Meritorious Service Award honors a person or organization that has served WNCC and students in a special or extraordinary way. The 2024 Cara Perkins Meritorious Service award winner went to Carr-Trumbull Lumber Company. Brothers Bill and Jim, the fourth generation to lead the business, have embraced the family legacy of service. Both have served on numerous local non-profit boards and volunteer for a wide range of events. Bill is involved with the Construction Trades Advisory Board at WNCC, and he and his wife Cheryl are athletic sponsors. Jim and his wife Brenda were dorm parents for 13 years and volunteer for the Monument Marathon. Carr-Trumbull Lumber Company has been a sponsor of the Monument Marathon since it started and has provided materials to support WNCC’s Construction Trades program.

The Outstanding Young Alumnus award recognizes a graduate of WNCC younger than 40 years old who is a rising star in their career field and has shown dedication to community service. The Outstanding Young Alumnus Award was presented to Trevor G. Aguirre, class of 2011. While studying at WNCC, Aguirre developed a strong work ethic and embraced the idea of "failing forward" in the supportive environment of the college. He earned two Associate of Science degrees—one in Engineering and one in Mathematics. After WNCC, Trevor continued his education at Colorado State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. Trevor has published many articles on such topics as material processing, ceramics, additive manufacturing, and bioinspired design.

The Family Pride award is given to a family with at least two generations that have attended or graduated from WNCC. This year, the Family Pride award was presented to the Winkler Family. The Winkler family story begins with Harold and Mildred Winkler, the founders of Winkler Electric, and their three children, who all attended WNCC (then Scottsbluff Junior College). Their sons, Jerry and Chuck were standout student-athletes. Jerry, a 1963 graduate, and Chuck, a 1965 graduate, both quarterbacked the football team. Chuck also played basketball. Their daughter, Judi, also attended WNCC, continuing the family’s connection to the college. Chuck later married Patty Miller, who also attended WNCC and has remained deeply involved with the college. Since 2001, she has served on the WNCC Foundation board member. Together, Chuck and Patty have supported WNCC financially, contributing to the greatest needs of the Foundation - funding and scholarships - since 2008. They have also volunteered for the Monument Marathon since its inception. Their family legacy continues with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, many of whom have attended WNCC in some capacity.

The Outstanding Alumnus Award goes to a graduate that has been successful in their career and has made significant contributions to the community. George D. Holthus, Class of 1987, accepted the 2024 Outstanding Alumnus Award. Holthus grew up in Gering, and began his public service career in 1987 after earning an Associate’s Degree in Human Services from WNCC. While at WNCC, he completed a "Human Services Practicum" with the Gering Police Department, which ignited his lifelong passion for law enforcement. A few months later, he was hired by the Gering Police Department, marking the start of a career that has now spanned over three decades. In addition to his law enforcement responsibilities, George serves on the Foundation Board for Gering Public Schools and Mediation West. He also played a key role in establishing the Gering High School Public Safety Academy.

The Lifetime Achievement award is given to a WNCC faculty, staff, or alumnus who has demonstrated a lasting commitment of service to the mission and community of&nbsp;WNCC. The 2024 award went to Jean Carol Ahrens. Ahrens began her teaching career at Nebraska Western College (now WNCC), planning to stay just a couple of years for experience. However, she found herself there for over 45 years, realizing that she was more suited to the plains and prairie of Scottsbluff than to big city life. Jean relished her time with students, teaching a wide range of subjects including composition, reading, logic, study skills, and various forms of literature, with a special fondness for children’s literature, her favorite course. After 39 years of full-time teaching, she retired but continued to share her passion for children’s literature for an additional 15 semesters.

The Friend of the College award is given to a person, organization, or business that has demonstrated a commitment to the educational advancement of people in the Panhandle. Fred and Carol Lockwood of the Lockwood Foundation accepted the 2024 Friend of the College award. Fred and Carol Lockwood have long been dedicated to serving their community through both professional and philanthropic efforts. The Lockwoods' involvement with WNCC has spanned over three decades, directing contributions toward technology improvements, campus renovations, and the creation of the Career Pathways &amp; Advising Center. Fred’s dedication extends beyond financial contributions; at 83, he participated in the 2023 Monument Marathon 5K event, the oldest runner to complete the race. The Lockwoods' generous donations have played a crucial role in enabling WNCC to tackle pressing challenges. Their kindness has supported the college and its students for over 30 years, creating a lasting legacy of service that will benefit the community for generations.

The WNCC Alumni Association has presented awards for the last 11 years.  </figure>The Cara Perkins Meritorious Service Award honors a person or organization that has served WNCC and students in a special or extraordinary way. The 2024 Cara Perkins Meritorious Service award winner went to Carr-Trumbull Lumber Company. Brothers Bill and Jim, the fourth generation to lead the business, have embraced the family legacy of service. Both have served on numerous local non-profit boards and volunteer for a wide range of events. Bill is involved with the Construction Trades Advisory Board at WNCC, and he and his wife Cheryl are athletic sponsors. Jim and his wife Brenda were dorm parents for 13 years and volunteer for the Monument Marathon. Carr-Trumbull Lumber Company has been a sponsor of the Monument Marathon since it started and has provided materials to support WNCC’s Construction Trades program.The Outstanding Young Alumnus award recognizes a graduate of WNCC younger than 40 years old who is a rising star in their career field and has shown dedication to community service. The Outstanding Young Alumnus Award was presented to Trevor G. Aguirre, class of 2011. While studying at WNCC, Aguirre developed a strong work ethic and embraced the idea of "failing forward" in the supportive environment of the college. He earned two Associate of Science degrees—one in Engineering and one in Mathematics. After WNCC, Trevor continued his education at Colorado State University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering. Trevor has published many articles on such topics as material processing, ceramics, additive manufacturing, and bioinspired design.The Family Pride award is given to a family with at least two generations that have attended or graduated from WNCC. This year, the Family Pride award was presented to the Winkler Family. The Winkler family story begins with Harold and Mildred Winkler, the founders of Winkler Electric, and their three children, who all attended WNCC (then Scottsbluff Junior College). Their sons, Jerry and Chuck were standout student-athletes. Jerry, a 1963 graduate, and Chuck, a 1965 graduate, both quarterbacked the football team. Chuck also played basketball. Their daughter, Judi, also attended WNCC, continuing the family’s connection to the college. Chuck later married Patty Miller, who also attended WNCC and has remained deeply involved with the college. Since 2001, she has served on the WNCC Foundation board member. Together, Chuck and Patty have supported WNCC financially, contributing to the greatest needs of the Foundation - funding and scholarships - since 2008. They have also volunteered for the Monument Marathon since its inception. Their family legacy continues with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, many of whom have attended WNCC in some capacity.The Outstanding Alumnus Award goes to a graduate that has been successful in their career and has made significant contributions to the community. George D. Holthus, Class of 1987, accepted the 2024 Outstanding Alumnus Award. Holthus grew up in Gering, and began his public service career in 1987 after earning an Associate’s Degree in Human Services from WNCC. While at WNCC, he completed a "Human Services Practicum" with the Gering Police Department, which ignited his lifelong passion for law enforcement. A few months later, he was hired by the Gering Police Department, marking the start of a career that has now spanned over three decades. In addition to his law enforcement responsibilities, George serves on the Foundation Board for Gering Public Schools and Mediation West. He also played a key role in establishing the Gering High School Public Safety Academy.The Lifetime Achievement award is given to a WNCC faculty, staff, or alumnus who has demonstrated a lasting commitment of service to the mission and community of&nbsp;WNCC. The 2024 award went to Jean Carol Ahrens. Ahrens began her teaching career at Nebraska Western College (now WNCC), planning to stay just a couple of years for experience. However, she found herself there for over 45 years, realizing that she was more suited to the plains and prairie of Scottsbluff than to big city life. Jean relished her time with students, teaching a wide range of subjects including composition, reading, logic, study skills, and various forms of literature, with a special fondness for children’s literature, her favorite course. After 39 years of full-time teaching, she retired but continued to share her passion for children’s literature for an additional 15 semesters.The Friend of the College award is given to a person, organization, or business that has demonstrated a commitment to the educational advancement of people in the Panhandle. Fred and Carol Lockwood of the Lockwood Foundation accepted the 2024 Friend of the College award. Fred and Carol Lockwood have long been dedicated to serving their community through both professional and philanthropic efforts. The Lockwoods' involvement with WNCC has spanned over three decades, directing contributions toward technology improvements, campus renovations, and the creation of the Career Pathways &amp; Advising Center. Fred’s dedication extends beyond financial contributions; at 83, he participated in the 2023 Monument Marathon 5K event, the oldest runner to complete the race. The Lockwoods' generous donations have played a crucial role in enabling WNCC to tackle pressing challenges. Lincoln, Neb.- Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one individual following a fatal crash in Morrill County.

At approximately&nbsp;2:26 p.m.&nbsp;MT on Tuesday, November 12,&nbsp;troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol received a report of a crash&nbsp;on Highway 385 near mile marker 93. A preliminary investigation shows that a 2020 Chevrolet Express delivery van was traveling southbound on Highway 385 when it failed to slow down for a stopped southbound Ford F-150 that was waiting for cattle to cross the road. The delivery van attempted to switch lanes to avoid the vehicle, however the driver struck the stopped vehicle.

The Ford F-150 was occupied by one adult, identified as Kim Wills, 65, of Alliance, was administered CPR and transported to Morrill County Community Hospital, where she was declared deceased.

The driver of the delivery van, Daniel Flores, 21, of Mitchell, was arrested for motor vehicle homicide and careless driving. He was lodged in Morrill County Jail.

NSP was assisted on scene by the Morrill County Sheriff’s Office and the Morrill County Attorney’s Office.

This funding supports residents in our area with basic needs, including providing hunger relief, homelessness prevention and safe shelter through nonprofit partnerships. United Way programs directly support families and local nonprofit agencies to help both families and individuals experiencing poverty meet basic needs. From ensuring families have basic food to hygiene items to safe shelters, United Way is providing much needed support to the community.

Through partnerships to address basic needs, United Way and our partners provide the track to improve health and well-being for all to foster a health community. United Way Executive Director Karen Benzel highlighted the importance of the grant for United Way. Benzel noted, “The generous support of the BNSF Foundation provides United Way and our non-profit partners the opportunity to continue the work of strengthening our community. Through assisting with basic needs and collaborating with area partners through our community impact work, we are grateful for the generous contribution.”

Last week we attended the ELVIS Rock ’n’ Remember performance at the Alliance High School Performing Arts Center. This was the kick-off of the Alliance Arts Council Season, and what a great show it was! Over 500 people attended. Earl spends the afternoons of these programs working with performers, handling tech and equipment setup. He comes home for a quick supper, and we head back early.

One thing I notice at every performance, and every APS event like concerts and plays, is that the first seats to fill in that theater are the companion seats. If you’ve ever looked around the theater, you have noticed that there is one row of seats on the aisle connecting the entrance hallways, a row that requires no steps. This row has several places where there are no seats, places designed for wheelchairs. The other seats are companion seats, for people attending with the person with mobility issues.

I have not seen people with seeing eye dogs attend events at the Performing Arts Center, but they would also need to use the “special row” to have a space for the dog to sit. It would not make sense to bring a dog to a show like Elvis because of the noise and the lights, but there are plays, workshops, and awards ceremonies where service dogs would certainly be welcome.

Why do people grab the seats in this row first? Easy access and extra space, giving them the ability to get in and out quickly. Why do people with mobility issues need to sit there? As audience members using wheelchairs or walkers arrived, some people did leave seats to accommodate their needs. But I also noticed several other people who were semi-ambulatory struggling to climb up or down steps.

The Americans with Disabilities Act was enacted by Congress in 1990. The ADA is a federal civil rights law that protects people with disabilities from discrimination in many areas of public life.&nbsp;That means that public facilities have to accommodate their needs, with specially designed parking, bathrooms, doors, and, in this case, seating.

The problems faced by people with mobility issues are hardly limited to finding seats in a row designed for them. Sidewalks might not be level, and there may not be cut outs on the curbs to allow a wheelchair or scooter to manage. A handicapped van might have a side lift for a wheelchair that requires that extra-wide parking space with the stripes. Doors might not be wide enough or might be too hard to open. Bathroom stalls might be too narrow for someone in a wheelchair to transfer from.

Do we notice when people park in the handicapped spaces on our streets or store parking lots? Do we look to see whether they have a special license or hang tag? Are they entitled to use the special spaces when the handicapped family member isn’t with them? How about people who leave their vehicles in areas not designated for parking because they are “just running in” for a few things. Their vehicles are in the way and create problems for the rest of us, especially those with mobility issues. And those blue spaces are not really where you are supposed to leave your shopping cart!

I walk a lot, and I know how frustrating it is when a vehicle has parked across the sidewalk. I remember trying to wrangle strollers and wagons around them. Imagine the difficulty for someone with a wheelchair or scooter.

Most of us are fortunate enough that we don’t have to deal with handicaps or mobility issues. (But we are aging….) Let’s respect the needs of those who need accommodations. At the Performing Arts Center, let’s save those seats for the people who need them.

Box Butte County community holiday food baskets

CHADRON – Local high school students, CSC students, faculty, staff, administrators, and regional mental health professionals gathered in the Student Center Ballroom Wednesday for a Social Work conference about mental health with an emphasis on recovery. Seniors Emily Beye of Chadron and Sandra Arlt of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, organized the conference with Assistant Professor Becky Fernau. The annual conference has been hosted at Chadron State College for about two decades.

Ross Szabo, Wellness Director at the Geffen Academy at UCLA, was the keynote speaker. He shared his personal story about mental illness in his family that has been highlighted in his books and TED Talks.

He encouraged the audience to be proactive with mental health just like physical health.

“It is important to know your family history. When you share your story, it encourages others to share their stories. Express your internal life. It takes more strength to do that than keep it covered up,” Szabo said.

He said he hid his feelings and started drinking at age 11 until a suicide attempt in high school. He continued to struggle in college until he received a diagnosis and treatment from a professional.

“I didn’t talk about my feelings. I just made my friends laugh. Coping mechanisms are important. The longer you use a coping mechanism, the harder it gets to change. Young people are having a competition about being stressed out and they are learning it from adults,” Szabo said.

Dr. Tara Wilson, professor of Counselor Education, shared a statistic that indicates one in five rural residents may have a&nbsp;mental illness. She said rural areas also report a higher rate of death by suicide. A shortage of behavioral health professionals compounds these demographics.

Wilson pointed out that the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and peer support groups in schools called Hope Squads are available to help.

Wilson provided inventory worksheets for attendees to complete in eight areas: physical, intellectual, emotional, social, occupational, financial, environmental, and spiritual.

“Give yourself kudos for what you are doing well, then work on those that need improvement,” Wilson said.

A panel discussion featured Joshua Harris, a CSC alum and licensed certified social worker from Rapid City, Chelsea Turner, a licensed student counselor with CSC, and Sonja Dressel, a licensed counselor with Project Strive. The three covered maintaining healthy boundaries, self-care, being aware of cultural differences, and treating all clients with dignity and respect.

Dr. Carrie Howton, director of the Human Services program at Western Nebraska Community College and LaTashia Ramirez of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, gave a team presentation which started with a case study of person in addiction. Audience members were given roles related to the person such as drug court team members and probation officers. Howton asked the attendees for suggested treatment approaches and after the responses Ramirez shared that she was the person described in the case study.

“LaTashia is using her lived experience to help others. Peer support provides someone to walk with the person in their recovery journey and show that recovery is possible,” Howton said. “Peer Support can really help win the battle of recovery.”

Howton said peer support helps connect the person in recovery with resources and other positive outcomes include increased engagement and retention in treatment plus better providing connections to the recovery community.

Applicants who want to become certified Peer Support Specialists must be able to prove that they have two years living in recovery. Supervision and training are also required.

Dr. Sandy Cook-Fong, a faculty member at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, focused her remarks on how to help children from hard places, including trauma from medical treatment as well as emotional, physical, and sexual abuse.

Multiple foster placements, separation from siblings, difficult divorces, disrupted adoptions can all be sources of behavioral and neurological trauma not visible to others.

“Kids from hard places live like they are threatened all the time. How do we disarm that fear? Use trauma-informed practices to create a safe environment. Help the child make connections through teams or church groups. Give the child schedules and routines,” Cook-Fong said.

Cook-Fong also described&nbsp;the 5-4-3-2-1 method to reduce anxiety. The grounding technique involves identifying five things a stressed person can see, four things they can touch, three things they can hear, two things they can smell, and one thing they can taste.

Speech therapist Jenilee Woltman of Hemingford, Nebraska, shared her story of raising twins and gave examples of how&nbsp;communication is linked to behavioral health.

Her young daughter, who has social pragmatic communication disorder and expressive language difficulty, wouldn’t answer a question asking her if she wanted to put her coat on because she got caught up in thinking about where the coat is from, which arm she should put in first, and other questions.

“Adults can help by describing the situation rather than asking a child with this disorder a direct question,” Woltman said.

Social Work conference shares techniques to help with mental health in Chadron

LINCOLN — The Nebraska Department of Economic Development awarded $8.3 million in federal community development block grant funds to 18 communities across the state for downtown revitalization and other improvements.

<a href="https://opportunity.nebraska.gov/programs/community/cdbg/" target="_blank">CDBG&nbsp;</a>funds come from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The state DED administers the program for communities outside Lincoln, Omaha, Bellevue and Grand Island, which are big enough to administer their own CDBG programming.

“For the state to grow, it’s critically important to invest in projects that enhance the attractiveness of our communities,” said K.C. Belitz, DED director. “These initiatives elevate quality of life and strengthen our ability to recruit new residents to Nebraska.”

Belitz said in a media statement that the most recent awardees provided a solid plan for community development that included support from local businesses and residents.

The Alliance Lions Club completed its annual Shopping Spree fundraiser on Saturday morning November 9 at Grocery Kart.&nbsp; Raffle winner Sandi Watkins stuffed $533.48 worth of groceries into four shopping carts in&nbsp;three minutes.

The second-place winner of a $50 gift certificate, Jazmine Burri, and third place winner of a Thanksgiving turkey, Lori Benzel, will be picking up their prizes at a later date.

Eleven Contestants Competing for Miss and Teen Alliance 2025

Broken Bow, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested an Ohio man and safely rescued an abducted child following a pursuit Saturday.

Saturday afternoon, NSP received information from the Columbus Police Department of Ohio that a suspect of a child abduction may be traveling westbound on I-80 in Nebraska. The child, a three-year-old, was believed to be in the vehicle, which was a GMC Sierra.

Out of concern for the child and other motorists on the road, troopers discontinued the pursuit and issues alerts to other law enforcement agencies about the situation.

A short time later, Dawson County 911 received a report of the suspect vehicle driving northbound on Cozad Road into Custer County. The vehicle then turned westbound onto Highway 40 near Callaway. Troopers were able to successfully deploy spot sticks, but the driver refused to stop. A trooper reengaged the pursuit.

Additional troopers were located at the intersection of Highway 40 and Highway 47 to attempt another deployment of stop sticks. As the driver reached that location, he drove off the road and at a trooper. The trooper was able to run out of the way to avoid getting struck.

The suspect continued fleeing northbound on Highway 47 and then westbound on Highway 92, where the driver drove off the road, through a fence, and into a field, where the pickup became disabled. Troopers were then able to take the driver into custody without further incident. The child was located safely in the rear seat of the pickup.

The driver, Diego Revilla Gonzalez, 27, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, child abuse (no injury), attempted assault on an officer, and numerous traffic violations. He was lodged in Custer County Jail. The child was medically cleared and placed in protective care pending reunification with her mother.

 </figure>“I have always felt like I wanted to do something with criminal justice because of the public safety aspect. Eventually, I would like to become a firefighter, and having a foot in the door with the public safety aspect will hopefully make it easier for me,” Lindstrom said.While attending CSC, Lindstrom said she has enjoyed taking Aging and Death (FCS 320) with Dr. Josh Ellis and Criminology (CJ&nbsp; 239) with Dr. Jamie Wada.Wada, Professor and Justice Studies Department Chair, said he will miss Lindstrom when she graduates.“Taylor has a friendly and positive attitude. She is also a fantastic person. Taylor has been a delight to have in class,” Wada said.Assistant Professor in Justice Studies Dr. Adam Hoesing, said Lindstrom has a desire to communicate.“Taylor is a hard-working, relatable, and enjoyable student. She comes to class prepared with a willingness to learn. That attitude extends beyond the classroom too, as she is not afraid to visit the Justice Studies Department and discuss her career goals or how the course materials apply in a real-world context,” Hoesing said.When not in class, Lindstrom enjoys spending time with her puppy and riding her&nbsp;<a>dirt</a>&nbsp;bike.Lindstrom plans to graduate in December and then join the Rockerville Fire Department in Pennington County, South Dakota.Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to&nbsp;<a>help</a>&nbsp;students succeed.
