In Box Butte County District Court Wednesday, Judge Travis P. O'Gorman issued sentencing in the case of Nebraska vs. Jacob Zier, 34, of Alliance.&nbsp; Zier, who attended the sentencing via video conference, burglarized the Alliance Mission Store on September 13, 2024.

Judge O'Gorman sentenced Zier on one count of attempted burglary, a Class 3-A felony, to 364 days in the Box Butte County Jail, minus 142 days previously served.

Following his release, Zier will be subject to nine months of post-release supervision.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Music department has announced the dates of spring performances. All concerts and recitals are open to the public and free of charge.

Kicking off the semester’s events, the CSC Jazz Band will perform Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Week.

Next, the High Plains Band and Choir Festival will take place on Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium, bringing together talented musicians from the region.

Later in February, the Music Faculty Showcase will highlight the talents of CSC’s faculty members on Feb. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center’s Chicoine Atrium.

The Honors Recital follows on March 2, from 3 to 5 p.m., also in the Sandoz Center Atrium.

March 25, a collaborative concert will take place featuring Chadron Public Schools, the Chadron State Wind Symphony, and the CSC Community Symphonic Band from 7 to 9 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium.

On March 27, CSC will host its College Musician for a Day event, an immersive experience for aspiring musicians. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium. The CSC Concert Choir and Community Choir will present a concert April 6, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Chadron Arts Center, offering a blend of vocal performances.

On April 12, the New Music concert will feature original compositions by members of the community. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

Wauneta, Neb. - Local first responder crews responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning around 4:00 am. The Wauneta Fire Chief stated on a social media post that no one was inside the structure and there were no injuries.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Several years ago I was sitting at church fellowship with a friend who was about 25 years older than I was. I'll call her Alice for this article. Alice pulled an envelope of cash out of her purse to buy something from a child in our church. I was surprised she carried that much cash, and she was surprised that I didn’t.

A stay-at-home mom and housewife, Alice was given a certain amount of money every month from her husband. She had an envelope for groceries and an envelope for other expenses. It was her responsibility to budget her funds, manage that cash to last until the end of the month. She didn’t have access to savings or checking accounts.

I saw this as a generational difference. Her generation was one-income families with the man controlling financial matters. Mine was the first generation where most women expected to have careers. Before the 1970s women could not have bank accounts or any kind of credit without a man co-signing. Therefore Alice bought everything with cash.

What Alice did decades ago is now a financial strategy that is followed by many people in their 20s. It’s called cash stuffing, and it is a trend found on social media. People pay bills and buy things with cash, then post videos on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

I subscribe to Marketplace from American Public Media, and they recently reported on cash stuffing. The article talked about a YouTube channel called LilyBudgets, which has had over a million views.

Like most people, Lily’s paycheck is direct deposited. She goes to the bank and draws most of it out in cash, in the specific denominations she needs for each bill. The cash is then sorted into a pink envelope with dividers: housing, gas, groceries, fun. Some of the cash is returned to the bank to deposit in a Roth IRA and a savings account.

There is a risk, however. If cash is lost or stolen, there isn't any good recourse. You're just out the money you had set aside to pay those bills. For many, that is financially devastating. Our money is so much safer in a bank!

Lily loves handling the money, counting the bills as she pays for everything. She thinks the tangible nature of money helps her save. And multiple studies show that she is right.

The Marketplace article talked about the endowment effect. When you hold onto something, you cherish it more. You see your hard-earned money, what you labored for hours to earn, being given to someone else. You’re less likely to let it go, so you spend less.

Compare that to the alternative used by most people Lily’s age, or mine, for that matter. Tap your phone. Use a cash app. If you’re a Luddite, you might even get out a credit or debit card. Those are all payments that put a wall between us and our money, so we don’t really pay attention to how much we are spending. And when we are not paying attention, we spend more.

Who uses cash stuffing? People who have trouble managing their money. People who have racked up too much credit card debt. People who haven’t been able to successfully manage checking accounts. Even young people who like the aesthetics of cash and want to post about it.

Do they realize they are following the example of Great-Grandma? Hey, it worked for her!

Getting Ahead: Cash stuffing 

The 2025 mountain lion hunting season in Nebraska ended Jan. 19 after the final harvest limit was reached in the Pine Ridge Unit.

One male and six females were harvested in the Pine Ridge Unit. Regulations require the unit close once the annual harvest limit of 12 mountain lions — or sublimit of six females — is reached.

The Wildcat Hills and Niobrara units met their harvest limits Jan. 2 and 5 respectively.

Fresh snow for good tracking conditions in many areas, effective hunting techniques, and excellent hunter access due to relatively thin linear habitats in the Niobrara and Wildcat Hills units, contributed to relatively short seasons.

In total, 13 mountain lions were harvested during the 2025 season — those in the Pine Ridge Unit, one male and two females in the Niobrara Unit, and two males and one female in the Wildcat Hills Unit.

This was the state’s eighth mountain lion harvest season; the first was in 2014.

Opportunities to harvest mountain lions were expanded for 2025 due to an increased population estimate in the Pine Ridge and increased numbers documented in the Niobrara and Wildcat Hills areas. Harvest limits and permits increased in the Pine Ridge and Niobrara Units, the Niobrara Unit area was increased, and the Wildcat Hills Unit was added to the mountain lion hunting season for the first time.

The limits for Nebraska’s three mountain lion hunting units are set to meet the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s objective to maintain resilient, healthy and socially acceptable mountain lion populations that are in balance with available habitat and other wildlife species over the long term.

Mountain lions are native to Nebraska but were extirpated from the state in the early 1900s. They moved back into the state from South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado as populations of prey species increased. Mountain lion presence in Nebraska was confirmed in the early 1990s, and in 1995 the state legislature classified them as game animals.

Since then, the cats have established reproducing populations in Nebraska’s most rugged terrain: the Pine Ridge, Wildcat Hills and Niobrara Valley with occasional confirmed presence in other parts of the state.

Alliance Nutrition Site to host Valentine’s Dinner

SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Scottsbluff Police Department and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, apprehended two minors following a pursuit in Scottsbluff.

Monday evening, NSP was alerted that Scottsbluff PD officers were looking for a vehicle that had been reported stolen. At approximately 10:10 p.m. MT, a trooper attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, a Mercury Mariner. The driver accelerated and fled on residential streets in Scottsbluff. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The vehicle continued to flee on residential streets, running through multiple stop signs. At the intersection of 14th&nbsp;Street and 4th&nbsp;Avenue, the vehicle failed to make a turn and struck a tree. Two occupants fled on foot, while a third occupant remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. The driver of the vehicle was located a short time later and take into custody by the Scottsbluff Police Department.

Scottsbluff Police Department is actively investigating a serious assault that occurred on 1-20-25 at approximately 10:25 pm.&nbsp; 

The assault is believed to have occurred in the area of 5th&nbsp;Avenue and East Overland and left a 15-year-old juvenile with a life threatening, penetrating wound to the chest. &nbsp;Anyone with security camera footage in that area is encouraged to contact the Scottsbluff Police Department.&nbsp; The name of the victim will not be released at this time.

Additionally, the Scottsbluff Police Department is aware of a vehicle pursuit led by the Nebraska State Patrol that occurred around this same time, and in this same area as the assault. The Department is investigating the possibility that the two incidents are related.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lastly, Scottsbluff Police Department is aware of a video circulating on Facebook showing a foot pursuit around the time of this incident.&nbsp; The suspect involved in the foot pursuit is not the same person as the victim from the assault, and sustained minor injuries during his apprehension.&nbsp; The suspect in the foot pursuit was a juvenile, and was transported to RWMC for medical treatment and released to the Nebraska State Patrol for admittance to a juvenile detention facility on pending charges related to the vehicle pursuit.&nbsp;

The Department is investigating the possibility that the two incidents are related.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lastly, Scottsbluff Police Department is aware of a video circulating on Facebook showing a foot pursuit around the time of this incident.&nbsp; The suspect involved in the foot pursuit is not the same person as the victim from the assault, and sustained minor injuries during his apprehension.&nbsp; The suspect in the foot pursuit was a juvenile, and was transported to RWMC for medical treatment and released to the Nebraska State Patrol for admittance to a juvenile detention facility on pending charges related to the vehicle pursuit.&nbsp;

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk and West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff have been approved as instructional sites by the Student Exchange Visitor Program to accept international students into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs, beginning with the fall 2025 semester.

Previously, those students would have to get an associate degree before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing. They now can satisfy their prerequisites and consider the UNMC College of Nursing divisions in Norfolk and Scottsbluff for their bachelor’s degree without having to complete the associate degree in nursing first.

Haley Hays, DNP, interim assistant dean of the West Nebraska Division, said this will benefit both divisions because many international students already are on the campuses of Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff and Northeast Community College in Norfolk. Hays said in her tenure, the UNMC College of Nursing has had to turn away several international students, all of whom attended Western Nebraska Community College and wanted to remain in Scottsbluff.

“This initiative not only diversifies our student body but also strengthens the pipeline of highly skilled, culturally competent nurses in rural Nebraska,” she said. “By expanding opportunities for international students, we are fostering a richer educational environment and helping to address the critical need for health care professionals in our communities.”

Maegen Graham, student services coordinator at the West Nebraska Division, added that it will help bolster health care in the area, especially for international populations.

“It is important to be able to serve the international community in the rural areas and the Panhandle of Scottsbluff,” she said.

Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, said the ability to bring international students into the programs at Norfolk and Scottsbluff will be an asset to their respective communities.

“We are excited to have achieved this milestone and now be able to accept international students into our BSN program at the Northern and West Nebraska Divisions,” she said.&nbsp;“This is an opportunity to bolster the nursing&nbsp;workforce by retaining these students in our rural communities.”

Jane Meza, PhD, UNMC interim chancellor for academic affairs, said the interactions between students at UNMC campuses lead to a robust, collaborative environment. Students learn from one another and can take those lessons into their careers. Agreements to accept international students already are in place at Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney.

“We like to have international students at UNMC because it leads to a richer educational opportunity for all students,” she said. “It helps us to work and to learn with people from other countries and other cultures.”

Angela Johnson, EdD, assistant dean of the Northern Division, echoed Meza’s comments, stating that international students will encourage cross-cultural learning and collaboration in the classroom, which will prepare all students for life after school.

“Their presence enriches classroom discussions, fosters a broader understanding of healthcare practices, and contributes to the cultural competence of our future nursing professionals,” she said. “By welcoming international students, we strengthen our commitment to being a welcoming university that reflects the world we aim to serve.”

Chadron- 10 young ladies from across the state gathered on Saturday night to compete in the Miss Chadron pageant in Chadron. Walking away with the title of Miss Chadron 2025 was Sophie Kruse, daughter of Ron and Suzie Kruse of Longmont. Kruse was also won the Miss Community Service competition.

Desteny Miller, daughter of Brandon and Cherry Wulf of Arapahoe, was voted Miss Congeniality.

Jessica Schmidt, daughter of Dale and Jolene Schmidt of Rapid City, was voted Miss audience choice.

Your 2025 Teens are: Miss Chadron’s Teen 2025, Paige Dodson, daughter of Wendy Dodson of North Platte. Dodson was also voted the Teen Miss Congeniality. Miss Northwest’s Teen 2025, Kaitlyn Shannon, daughter of Stephanie Shannon and Matthew Shannon of Alliance.

Allisen Meek, daughter of Jennifer and Brett Cullan and David Meek of Hemingford won the Teen Community Service competition.

Grace Freesman, daughter of John and Krystal Freesman of Gordon, was voted Teen audience choice.

Alliance awaits a solar farm to diversify the community’s electric power resources though even when built and operational local residents will remain “on the grid.” What does it look like to unplug from a municipal utility? A cabin deep in the forest has occupied my mind’s eye. In reality, my first visit to a home “off the grid” came a few weeks ago among the snow-covered Sandhills.

Driving from Morrill County, Vicki Thompson pulls up in front of the Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Center door at least once a month or more in a red SUV. She is among a handful of patrons I have known since I was a kid. We chat for a few minutes while whisking sorted bags inside and returning a box suited to holding magazines. Not too far in the past I asked about the ranch and learned that Vicki and her husband Grover had completely retired as Frank and Mandy, their son and daughter-in-law, were running the operation. They were in the process of building a home on the ranch that would incorporate solar power and environmentally friendly/energy efficient technology while the next generation remained in a dwelling with a century of history.

The property already held a second house although the move would not have gained the couple much. Vicki noted this dwelling was located to the west on a trail road and it is “kind of dumb to move farther off the road when you're 80 years old.” They wanted a good view while still being available to spend time with their son’s family. Vicki and Grover also have an older daughter, Amanda. The site they selected is four miles north of their former home. Grover said they see Frank and Mandy’s oldest granddaughter, three-year-old Elsie, quite a bit. Her sister, Birdie, will be a year old in April.

Looking to the southwest out their living room window during the interview I also appreciated the view featuring rolling hills and a windmill. Though the builder would have incorporated the latest methods and technology this home was not originally slated to be off the grid. Vicki explained that it was going to cost $100,000 to get electricity from either direction so they chose the solar option. “We built the house with no electricity, it was the last thing,” she said.

In addition to no power lines the structure has no landline phone or cell service. They have Starlink internet service which allows them to run cell phones off of it. “The tricky part when we were setting up the solar service was calling the place and they sent the signal to start it,” Vicki recalled. “When you tell people you’re off the grid they don’t understand – we have nothing coming to us.”

I heard a rundown of how the 20-panel solar array operates then saw the equipment and control panels as they showed me around. The meter displays current usage, typically .46 Kw Grover said, as well as what the panels are generating and how much is available from the battery that receives a boost from the propane generator (which he’s tested at 20 below zero) when dipping below 40 percent. A separate solar panel charges the generator’s battery. In the attached garage, a feature lacking in the former location, there is the proverbial 10-foot (or so) pole Grover employs to swipe snow off the panels this time of year. “Weather dictates what you do,” he said. “(The system is) not as good in the winter – if the sun comes out around noon for 2-3 hours it takes a good charge.”

Like anyone’s house, certain appliances don’t get along well with others. Forget and turn something else on while the microwave is going and the breaker flips, Vicki said. Conversely they schedule the clothes dryer, which draws the most juice, for sunny days.

Beyond solar for electricity and propane to heat and cook, the new home itself (built on a slab) boasts energy-saving features: a two-inch layer of sprayed insulation, pellet wood stove and LED lighting. Also, drilling a new well was not necessary. “James Girard put a pump in the cylinder on demand off solar, it was an old windmill, still there but not hooked up. The pressure tank is the size of a (20#) propane bottle and we can pull the unit out (of the well if necessary),” Grover explained.

Specifications for the house (they moved in on Sept. 23, 2022) mirror a commitment to sound environmental practices and stewardship of the land as ranchers. Grover has served on the board of his Natural Resources District and its water task force. During the summer of 2022, Vicki and Grover, and their family, received the Nebraska Marine Daegen William-Tyeler Page Defending the Soil Memorial Award. The award honors the memory of Corporal Page who was among the 13 service members killed in the attack at the Kabul Airport in Afghanistan in 2021. Their criteria was for Grover caring for the land, and serving in the U.S. Army as a Green Beret.

Vicki said they took their children out with them since they were toddlers and they learned about intensive grazing practices as they grew up. Frank still operates that way and his sister (Amanda) likes to help out on the ranch when she comes home. “Both kids were raised doing every job on the ranch and tried to have fun learning and doing,” Vicki said.

Alliance High School Activities Calendar: Week of January 20th

The first Alliance Arts Council event of 2025 will be a performance by musician Joey Gulizia entitled “An Evening with Joey G” on Friday January 24th.   Gulizia will also be working as an artist in the elementary schools the week of January 20-24.

Gulizia is a multi instrument artist performing familiar tunes with a tropical twist.  Joey is a native of Omaha, NE where he has played music professionally since the age of ten.  Mainly playing percussion and woodwinds, he can be found in many musical situations and environments.  Joey has performed concerts in all 50 of the United States, many countries in Europe and also Japan.  While performing on over 30 cruises, he has gained first hand knowledge of the music from many cultures.

Joey has been a featured artist with the Omaha Symphony, Nebraska Jazz Orchestra, Nebraska Brass and countless other musical groups including his own.  Joey tours with Mannheim Steamroller.

Mr. Gulizia will be conducting an in-school residency in Alliance 4th grade classrooms the week of January 20-24.  These 4th grade students will have an opportunity to join Gulizia on stage for a portion of the Friday night event to showcase what they have learned during the week. Gulizia will then go on to present his solo performance.

Business co-presenters for the school residency and the public performance are FNIC, FNBO, Harris Sales, Western Nebraska Real Estate and KCOW/Double Q Country Radio.  The programs are presented with the support of the Nebraska Arts Council and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment.

Tickets for the Friday night performance are $10 Adult, $9 Senior, $5 Student (preschool admitted free).  Tickets are available at Carnegie Arts Center, Chamber of Commerce and at the door.  Doors open at 6:00.

According to Chadron Police Department, the missing person has been located and he is safe.

During the morning hours of January 16, 2025, the Chadron Police Department took a report that 28-year-old, Blaine Murphy took off walking near the 1200 block of West Highway 20. The report indicated Murphy may be having some mental difficulties. Officers began searching for Murphy, but were not able to locate him in the area or around the Chadron community. Later in the afternoon, Murphy was reported as missing by the reporting party.

As of this time, Murphy has still not been located. Murphy is reported to be 6 foot 4 inches tall, slender build, with blonde hair. He was last seen wearing a Gray Beanie, Gray Jacket and jeans. He may have his dog with him, which is a black and Gray blue healer mix.

We are asking for anyone who may have seen Murphy in the last 24-hours to call the Chadron Police Department and provide details of the sighting. Also, if anyone has any information as to where Murphy may be or where he may be headed to contact the Chadron Police Department at 308-432-0510. It is not known what state of mind Murphy may be in due to the reported mental difficulties, so if he is seen, please contact your local law enforcement agency for assistance.
