Our beloved wife, mom, sister, aunt and friend Terry Engelhaupt passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 8, surrounded by her family, after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 77 years old- or 19, as she liked to remind everyone, being a leap year baby.

Terry lived a life filled with love, laughter, and generosity. She was happiest when she was surrounded by family and friends, making sure everyone had plenty to eat (and plenty of snacks, too). She loved the ocean and felt a special connection to dolphins and whales, creatures as kind and gentle as she was.

Terry’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Dale; her children Kim (Chad) Stetson, Bill (Sarah) Engelhaupt and Dan (Amy) Engelhaupt; her grandchildren Nick (Kinlee), Dylan (Brittany) Evan, Aidan, Jake, Mason, Raven and Sinara. Also included are her great grandchildren, Adysen, Kamdyn, Bryn, Livie and Cooper. She loved each of them dearly and was so proud of the family she and Dale built together. Of all the names she answered to, “Grandma” was always her favorite. She also leaves behind her sisters Patti and Susie, many extended family members including nephews, nieces and cherished lifelong friends.

She is reunited with her parents along with many other loved ones that passed before her and that brings us peace.

We will celebrate Terry’s beautiful life on December 6th at the Chadron Arts Center from 1-4 p.m. The service will begin and 1:00 p.m. with Russ Seager officiating, followed by hors d’oeuvres and good conversation – just the way she would have wanted it. Please bring your favorite memory or story to share as our family would love to hear them.

In lieu of flowers, we ask that you send memorials to the Circle of Ligh in her honor. It is an organization that helped our mom and one that she truly believed in.

Terry Engelhaupt (1948 - 2025)

Donna Marie Culwell, 94, of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away peacefully November 4, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born September 13, 1931 in Meridian, Jefferson County, Nebraska.

She graduated from Fairbury High School and pursued her lifelong calling in nursing, earning her degree from nursing school in Wichita, Kansas. Donna devoted 35 years to her career as a Registered Nurse, caring for her patients with compassion, integrity, and dedication.

On February 27, 1954, she married the love of her life, Robert Culwell. They shared many cherished years together until his passing on January 31, 2003.

Donna’s deep faith guided her throughout her life. She was an active member of her church and found great joy in volunteering, always giving selflessly to her community and those in need.

She is survived by her children Michele and Warner Schulze, Alliance, Ne, Julie Culwell Gates, Cripple Creek, Colorado and Richard and Shirley Culwell; Lincoln, Ne; Seven grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren; 1 Great -Great grandchild all of whom brought her immense joy and pride.

Donna will be remembered for her gentle spirit, steadfast kindness, and enduring faith. Her legacy of love, service, and devotion to others will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Funeral services will be held in Alliance, Nebraska, November 12 at 3:30pm, at the Highland Park Care Center Chapel. Burial and Services will be held in Lincoln, Nebraska, at a later date in spring of 2026.

Donna was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Culwell; her parents, Henry and Theresa Brandt; and her brother, Larry Brandt.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the care staff at Highland Park for their kindness, compassion, and exceptional care.

Dennis M. Laughlin, 77, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025 at Presbyterian – St. Luke’s Medical Center in Denver, CO.

Dennis was born on May 12, 1948, in Alliance, Nebraska to Jack and Geraldine “Gerry” (Boleski) Laughlin

Following his graduation from Alliance High School he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving in Vietnam, he was among the elite chosen to represent the Air Force as a member of the U.S. Thunderbirds.

After proudly serving in the military, Dennis and his family made their home in Thornton, Colorado, where he went on to establish his own business, Sweetwater Sign and Design. He later returned to his hometown of Alliance, where he dedicated his time to serving fellow veterans as the Veterans Service Officer of Box Butte County. After retirement Dennis lived with his youngest son, Jake, where he enjoyed family life and remained until his passing.

Dennis is survived by his children, Dennis Jr, Christopher, Alexis, Jake; his grandchildren, Demi, Ariana, Kaleigh, Rex, Christian, Sofia; his brothers, Don, Bill (Sue), Rex, in addition to several nieces and nephews, as well as cousins.

Dennis is preceded in death by infant daughters Rochelle and Andrea, parents Jack and Gerry, and brother Jon.

Dennis had many passions that filled his life with joy. He loved spending time with Ellie, his loyal dog. A talented artist, Dennis expressed his creativity in everything he did, from his professional work to his personal projects. He was an avid golfer and a proud Nebraska Huskers fan! Above all, Dennis treasured his friendships and the time he spent with those he cared about.

Memorial service will be held on Friday, November 14, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at Bates-Gould Chapel with Father Matt Koperski officiating. Burial will be at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery with full military honors. A lunch will follow at Golden Hour Barbeque for family and friends to gather, share memories, and celebrate Dennis life.

Darlene May (Finnell) Meade, 97, passed away on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, in Auburn, Nebraska.

She was born May 21, 1928, in Cambridge, Nebraska to Dr. Lester and Theresa (Soeder) Finnell.&nbsp; Her childhood was spent primarily in Cambridge, until her family moved to Alliance, Nebraska, and eventually Lincoln, Nebraska.&nbsp; She attended Shelton Academy and graduated from Union College Academy in 1946.&nbsp; During her high school years, Darlene became a dedicated member of the Seventh-day Adventist church and participated in many church functions.&nbsp;

After graduating from high school, Darlene attended Union College for three years to pursue a career in nursing.&nbsp; However, this was disrupted when her father became ill and passed away in 1949.&nbsp; She then moved with her mother to Hemingford, Nebraska and taught elementary school.&nbsp; She married Roy Giles Meade, a farmer from rural Hemingford, in 1955, and went on to have three children: Janelle Jo (b. 1957), Jeffrey Giles (b. 1959), and Andrew Giles (b. 1961).&nbsp; The family lived and worked on the farm until 1967 when they rented the farm to their neighbors and moved to Alliance.&nbsp; Darlene returned to her studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education from Chadron State College in 1968.

While in Alliance, she worked as a substitute teacher while Roy worked as a journeyman welder.&nbsp; In 1983, she became a full-time special education teacher for Alliance Public School, while Roy worked as a welder for a railroad car repair shop.&nbsp; Darlene and Roy both retired in 1994.&nbsp; In retirement, she became co-chairman of the Friends of the Library’s annual book sale, remained active in the Adventist church, enjoyed numerous family vacations, and spent time with her grandchildren.&nbsp; In 2008, she moved to Auburn, Nebraska to be in a more accessible-friendly apartment.&nbsp; While in Auburn, she enjoyed spending time with family and friends.&nbsp;

She is survived by her children, Janelle Pyatt of Alliance; Jeffrey (Shannon Stemm) Meade of Auburn; Andrew Meade of Auburn; grandchildren, James Pyatt of Council Bluffs, Iowa; Madison Meade of Chicago, Illinois; sister-in-law, Delores Yoakum of Chadron, Nebraska; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Roy, her brother Halbert Finnell, her son-in-law John Pyatt, and her sisters-in-law Lucille, Emily, and Joyce.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Funeral services will be held Thursday, November 6, 2025 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Reverend Eric Morris officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp; Visitation will be held Wednesday, November 5, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the funeral home with the family present to greet friends from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Darlene May (Finnell) Meade (1928 - 2025)

Scott H. Miller, 70, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Box Butte General Hospital.

He was born on January 20, 1955, in Billings, Montana to Howard and Sally (Ostwalt) Miller.&nbsp; He spent his early years in Laurel, MT attending elementary and junior high. He then moved with his family to Fridley, MN where he attended high school until his Junior year.&nbsp; His family then moved to Havre, MT where he graduated from Havre High School in 1973.

Scott grew up as the son of a railroader and decided to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps.

Scott began his career with Burlington Northern Railroad in Havre, Montana in 1973, working in the Diesel shop and learning his trade with honor.&nbsp; From Havre he moved to Alliance, NE for a short period of time before transferring to Lincoln, NE.&nbsp; While in Lincoln he met Terri Thompson.&nbsp; They were united in marriage on May 13, 1988.&nbsp;

In 1993, he was transferred to London, Ontario, Canada where he worked on a special project for 3 years with General Electric, developing engines for the BNSF railroad.&nbsp; He then was transferred back to Alliance in 1996 where he was the General Foreman of the diesel mechanic shop prior to his retirement in 2010.

He was a lifelong member of the Eagles Club, serving in several communities where he and his family lived. In Alliance, Scott served in a leadership capacity and for many years oversaw and enjoyed cooking and serving for the Eagles events in his community.

Scott was known for his support of family, community, and he was very handy and helpful to others.&nbsp; He enjoyed craftwork like leather tooling and took great pride in his work. A portrait of the Last Supper was made, and he made many leather tool belts, wallets and other gifts for his family and friends.&nbsp; Scott was always there to lend a hand on any project involving plumbing, electrical, mechanical and elbow grease, and was always a go to hand if you needed some help. He was also a gardener, growing vegetables for creating salsa that his family shared as gifts to neighbors and friends. He enjoyed gaming and was known to make a monthly trek to Deadwood, SD with his wife Terri to try their luck and create great memories. Scott and Terri were rabid Cornhusker football fans, always there to support the big red.

Scott was a family man, always there to help with his children and raised a great family.&nbsp; He was proud of his children and grandchildren, and celebrated their accomplishments. He always served as a great role model for his two younger brothers, Kirk and Brad.

He is survived by his wife, Terri, his daughter, Jami Thompson of Alliance and her children, JaVaughn Thompson and Treyton Thompson, his daughter, Brittany Miller of Alliance and his son, Brandon and his wife, Zoe of Niceville, FL and their children, Hayden Pecenka and Braxton Miller.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brothers, Kirk (Nan) Miller of Helena, MT and Brad (Bodell) Miller of Mount Pleasant, SC. He is survived by his sister in-laws Penny Bauer of Lincoln, NE and Pam Hinrichs of Raymond, NE.&nbsp; Along with numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother in-law and father in-law.

Funeral services will be Thursday, November 6th, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alliance Eagles Club. Visitation begins at 1pm.

Miller, 70, passed away on Friday, October 31, 2025, at Box Butte General Hospital.He was born on January 20, 1955, in Billings, Montana to Howard and Sally (Ostwalt) Miller.&nbsp; He spent his early years in Laurel, MT attending elementary and junior high. He then moved with his family to Fridley, MN where he attended high school until his Junior year.&nbsp; His family then moved to Havre, MT where he graduated from Havre High School in 1973.Scott grew up as the son of a railroader and decided to follow in his father and grandfather’s footsteps.Scott began his career with Burlington Northern Railroad in Havre, Montana in 1973, working in the Diesel shop and learning his trade with honor.&nbsp; From Havre he moved to Alliance, NE for a short period of time before transferring to Lincoln, NE.&nbsp; While in Lincoln he met Terri Thompson.&nbsp; They were united in marriage on May 13, 1988.&nbsp;In 1993, he was transferred to London, Ontario, Canada where he worked on a special project for 3 years with General Electric, developing engines for the BNSF railroad.&nbsp; He then was transferred back to Alliance in 1996 where he was the General Foreman of the diesel mechanic shop prior to his retirement in 2010.He was a lifelong member of the Eagles Club, serving in several communities where he and his family lived. In Alliance, Scott served in a leadership capacity and for many years oversaw and enjoyed cooking and serving for the Eagles events in his community.Scott was known for his support of family, community, and he was very handy and helpful to others.&nbsp; He enjoyed craftwork like leather tooling and took great pride in his work. A portrait of the Last Supper was made, and he made many leather tool belts, wallets and other gifts for his family and friends.&nbsp; Scott was always there to lend a hand on any project involving plumbing, electrical, mechanical and elbow grease, and was always a go to hand if you needed some help. He was also a gardener, growing vegetables for creating salsa that his family shared as gifts to neighbors and friends. He enjoyed gaming and was known to make a monthly trek to Deadwood, SD with his wife Terri to try their luck and create great memories. Scott and Terri were rabid Cornhusker football fans, always there to support the big red.Scott was a family man, always there to help with his children and raised a great family.&nbsp; He was proud of his children and grandchildren, and celebrated their accomplishments. He always served as a great role model for his two younger brothers, Kirk and Brad.He is survived by his wife, Terri, his daughter, Jami Thompson of Alliance and her children, JaVaughn Thompson and Treyton Thompson, his daughter, Brittany Miller of Alliance and his son, Brandon and his wife, Zoe of Niceville, FL and their children, Hayden Pecenka and Braxton Miller.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brothers, Kirk (Nan) Miller of Helena, MT and Brad (Bodell) Miller of Mount Pleasant, SC. He is survived by his sister in-laws Penny Bauer of Lincoln, NE and Pam Hinrichs of Raymond, NE.&nbsp; Along with numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents and his mother in-law and father in-law.Funeral services will be Thursday, November 6th, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alliance Eagles Club. Scott H. Miller (1955 - 2025)

Randall H. Garrett (Randy), 80, of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away on October 30th, 2025.

Randy was born in Alliance, Nebraska, on April 18, 1945, to Donald and Dorothy Garrett. He was the third son, with two older brothers, Larry and Denny, and one younger brother, Greg. Randy proudly served in the Army National Guard.

Randy married Anita Shaughnessy in 1967, and together they had two children: daughter Gina (Rebillet) and son Pat. He later married Julie Bushnell in 1982 and had two sons: Jeff and Jace.

Throughout his life, Randy ran various businesses, all located at “the store” on 3rd Street in Alliance. He began his career with Don’s Liquor and Garrett Irrigation, followed by Garrett's Western Wear, Nikken, and finally Garrett's Custom Gifts in his later years. His favorite profession was his last, where he built bits, spurs, buckles, and western jewelry. He had a thorough appreciation for art and enjoyed spending time improving his craft. Many will remember countless conversations taking place at “the store,” regardless of which business was there. Randy enjoyed visiting with friends, comparing tall tales and half-correct wisdom.

Randy enjoyed motorcycles, cars, art, horses, guns, building bits and spurs, singing, and, as most of us know, talking. Given everything he tried his hand at; we will all remember him in our own special way. In his later years, his best friend was his dog Brutus. They were frequently seen cruising around town together—anywhere Randy went, Brutus also went.

Randy is survived by his four children, 10 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren: Gina Rebillet (widowed from Chuck), Pat Garrett (wife Lisa), Jeff Garrett (wife Cailey), and Jace Garrett (wife Hannah). He was a devoted father and will be deeply missed. He is also survived by his brother, Greg (wife Cheryl) and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be at St. John’s United Lutheran Church, 2090 Emerson Ave., on Saturday, November 22nd 11:00am.&nbsp; Pastor Megan Morrow will officiate.&nbsp;

&nbsp;In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the local animal shelter in honor of Brutus.

Randall H. Garrett (Randy) (1945 - 2025)

Wayne Walter Knote, 52, of Hemingford, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025.

Wayne was born on July 17, 1973, in Big Spring, Texas, to Darrel and Linda (Nicks) Knote. He lived a full and joyful life devoted to his family, community, and the Nebraska Husker football team.

When Wayne was one year old, his family moved to Alliance, Nebraska, where he later graduated from Alliance High School in 1991. On August 21, 1998, he married the love of his life, Amanda Grant, and together they raised their two daughters.

Wayne was an avid Husker football fan and was rarely seen without his Husker gear. He was employed by BNSF Railway for 27 years, working as a machinist. In addition, Wayne and Amanda owned and operated Village Pizza in Hemingford. He was an active member of the Alliance Eagles Club, where he was an integral part of the Thursday night hamburger feed.

During a family vacation, Wayne discovered a new passion for pickleball and went on to create the Hemingford Outdoor Pickleball Community, sharing his enthusiasm with others.

Wayne is survived by his wife of 27 years, Amanda; their daughters Emily Knote (Provo, UT) and Sara Knote (Scottsbluff, NE); sibling Thomas Knote (Lincoln, NE); his in-laws Larry and Barbara Grant (Marsland, NE); brother-in-law Shawn (Stacey) Grant; sisters-in-law Rebecca (Nick) Wignall (Alliance, NE) and Melissa (JD) Langston (Brighton, CO); three aunts; numerous nieces, nephews, great-niece, great-nephews, and cousins; and his close friend and concert-going&nbsp;buddy, Bret Lessert.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents, T.G. and Lottie Nicks, and Wayne and Christine Knote.

A memorial service will be held at the Alliance Eagles Club on Monday, November 3, at 2 p.m. To honor Wayne’s memory and Husker pride, the family requests that those attending wear Husker gear. Pamela Sue (Rothwell) Arrants, 73, of Alliance, Nebraska, passed away on October 23, 2025.

She was born on June 3, 1952, in Alliance to William J. and Shirley (Coleman) Rothwell. Pam grew up on the family ranch outside Hyannis and graduated from Hyannis High School. She carried her ranch values of hard work, loyalty, and family through every part of her life.

After high school, Pam married Rick Arrants, and they made their home in Alliance. She worked as a hairdresser for many years and was known for her steady hands, sharp humor, and her ability to make people feel comfortable just by being herself.

Pam’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her husband, Rick; sons Bill (Ashlynn), Joe (Danielle), and Ryan Arrants; stepdaughters Shari Walton and Tina Running Shield; and grandchildren Kiley Arrants, Taylynn Arrants, Zach Cordner, Jacob Arrants, Andrew Arrants, Timmy Bakkehaug, Mysti Running Shield, Tyger Running Shield, Austin Bordeaux, Brooklyn Bordeaux, and Seth Walton. She is also survived by siblings Bob (Terry) Rothwell, Polly Rothwell, and Peggy (Matt) Jolovich, along with many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William J. and Shirley (Coleman) Rothwell; her brother, Bill Rothwell; her grandson, Zach Walton; and her parents-in-law, Bob and Gladys Arrants.

Pam had a lifelong love of animals, especially her dogs—Molly, Sam, Coco, and the many others who shared her life. Her quiet strength, quick wit, and deep love for her family and pets will be remembered by all who knew her.

A celebration of her life will be held Thursday, October 30, at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Alliance, with lunch to follow at the church.

Virginia Alvina Greeb Benzel Sizemore, 101, lovingly known as “Grandma Ginny”, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Wednesday, October 22, 2025. She was born on July 16, 1924 in Gering, Nebraska, to Jake and Anna (Kolb) Greeb.

Virginia married the love of her life, Harold Benzel, on May 11, 1941, in Scottsbluff, Nebraska. Together, they had two daughters: Janice Benzel and Karen Kay Specht. The couple farmed in Gering Valley before relocating to Scottsbluff. After 24 years of marriage, Harold passed away. Virginia later married Marvin Sizemore. Marvin passed away in 1993, and in 2000 she moved to Hemingford to be closer to her daughter and family.

Virginia was a devoted member of the Salem Congregational Church in Scottsbluff, where she sang in the choir and was known for making homemade noodles and butterballs for church bake sales. After moving to Hemingford, she became an active member of the United Methodist Church, served on the Box Butte County election board, and volunteered at the Box Butte County Fair. In addition to keeping up with the family farm operation, she especially enjoyed playing bingo and cards with her friends at Apollo Court—always with a competitive spirit.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Janice, her first husband Harold and second husband Marvin, and her sister Eleanor Kissler.

Virginia is survived by her daughter Karen Kay and son-in-law Charles Specht; grandchildren Debra (Tim) Kumpf, Laura (Troy) Shoemaker, and Brian (Hope) Specht; great-grandchildren Kyle (Kaitlyn) Kumpf, Hannah (TJ) Aanenson, Kaitlyn (Jakways) Mendoza, Ethan (Dalli) Specht, and Breana Specht; and great-great-grandchildren Everly, Elle, and Millie Kumpf. She is also survived by her very special cousin Irene Brill Netzel of Julesburg, Colorado—who shared life’s journey with Virginia and celebrated their 101st birthdays together this year—and two cherished nieces, Sandra Hoxworth and Shirley Goebal.

Virginia Alvina Greeb Benzel Sizemore (1924 - 2025)

Lorence Ray Phillips, 95, passed away October 16, 2025 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, Nebraska.

He was born April 17, 1930 at his Grandma Phillips’ farm west of Hemingford, Nebraska to Ray F. and E. Irene (Reigle) Phillips. He attended rural school through the 8th grade and high school at Hemingford Public Schools, graduating in 1950.&nbsp; In the summer of 1952 Lorence and his Dad did custom wheat harvesting starting in Kansas going all the way up to North Dakota.&nbsp; One of the farmers they harvested for around Dickinson, North Dakota was Adolph and Emma Ficek.&nbsp; The Ficek’s had a beautiful daughter, Eleanor.&nbsp; After a 5 year long distance courtship Lorence and Eleanor were married at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Dickinson on June 25, 1957.&nbsp; The couple celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary before Eleanor’s passing in 2022.&nbsp; Together they worked side by side to build their dream west of Hemingford.&nbsp; They had one daughter, Peggy Ann, who was born May 14, 1959.&nbsp;

Lorence leaves a legacy for his family of hard work, dedication, loyalty and never knowing a stranger.&nbsp; He volunteered many hours to the Hemingford community from helping his friend, Doyle Dyer, to planting trees at the Box Butte County Fair, to helping set up the Hemingford Christmas Diorama.&nbsp; For over 65 years, Lorence and Eleanor were members of St. Bridget’s Catholic Church and helped with many funeral dinners.&nbsp; While still able to drive, Lorence frequently was found in Hemingford visiting his many friends. He was a huge Hemingford Bobcat supporter, attending many volleyball and basketball games.

Lorence was preceded in death by his loving wife, Eleanor; his parents, Ray and Irene Phillips; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Adolph and Emma Ficek; and his brother-in-law, Adolph C. Ficek.&nbsp;

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and Terry Jensen of Alliance, Nebraska; grandchildren, Scott and Ericka Barber of Ardmore, Oklahoma, Michelle and Kurt Garrett of Alliance, Nebraska and Hope and Mason Nicklaus of Amarillo, Texas; great-grandchildren, Kayla Barber and fiancé’ Jarrod Ballard, Scott Barber, Jr. and fiancé’ Isabella Green, Aubrey and James Larson, Austin Garrett and girlfriend Zoe Cole, Nash Nicklaus and Maley Nicklaus; and great-great grandson, Casen Barber.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Arlee and Betty Phillips of Hemingford, Nebraska, his sister-in-law, Carina Ficek of Dickinson, North Dakota, along with numerous nieces and nephews and his special cat Freckles.

A Rosary service will be Monday, October 20th at 7:00 p.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church followed by a time to share stories and memories of Lorence and to visit with his family.&nbsp; Funeral services will be Tuesday, October 21st at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bridget Catholic Church with Father Matt Koperski officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery.

Lorence Ray Phillips (1930 - 2025)

Eileen Adeline Grothen Jensen was born at home on April 15, 1933 in Otter Tail County near Parkers Prairie, Minnesota to Theodore and Olga (Jantzen) Grothen.

Eileen went home to be with our Lord on October 15, 2025 at the age of 92.

Eileen’s life was full of compassion for others, love toward her neighbor, and an unwavering faith in the Lord. She always enjoyed helping and caring for others which inspired her to obtain her Registered Nursing degree in Minnesota. She began her nursing work in Denver, Colorado then moved to Alliance, with her sweetheart, Randy, to continue providing a great standard of care at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Good Samaritan Health Care Center.

After retiring from nursing, Eileen enjoyed many volunteer experiences at church, RSVP, and Good Samaritan. She was an active member at St. John’s Lutheran Church for over sixty years.

On January 22, 1961, Eileen married Arandel (“Randy”) Lamar Jensen in Alliance, NE. Eileen gladly took on the new role of mom when she welcomed Randy’s son, David Lamar, and loved the Kampbell family as her own. On her 90th birthday Eileen was asked, “What is your happiest memory?” to which she replied, “Having the birth of a child. I was 27 and that was the most glorious thing. It continues to be the best thing.” Together Eileen and Randy had three more wonderful children, in addition to Randy’s son David: Dennis Mark, Brian James, and Cynthia Marie.

Eileen is survived by three of her children - David, Brian (Tannya), and Cynthia (Kevin) Horn, all of Alliance. Forever cherished and remembered by her seven grandchildren: Amber (Louis) Roman, Ethan Jensen, Kevin Fraedrich, Vanessa Fraedrich, Cory Fraedrich (Shanda), Kacey (Jason) Shaneyfelt, and Christa (Andy) Fulk. Eileen enjoyed watching her great-grandchildren grow: Mads, Zack, Aubrey, Chloe, Riggs, Taylor, Nikki, Jordan, Raylan, Jase, Jada, Aleshia, Jeremy, Lilly, and Noah. She shared her love with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins as well.

Eileen blessed her family and friends in the most wonderful ways. Her constant support, love, and service to her neighbor is a trait her family deeply admires. She attended every play, musical, concert, and ball game that she could. Everyone needs their own “cheerleader” Eileen in their life.

Eileen’s life goal was to make people happy. If you knew Eileen, you know that she met that goal with every person she met. Eileen loved to share stories, laugh, cook, crochet, read, garden, cuddle with a furry friend, take a walk into the sunset, and, of course, eat chocolate with friends. Eileen’s life advice for others is to smile when you meet new people, remember the good, and live as good of a life as you can.

Eileen is preceded in death by her parents Theodore and Olga, her husband Arandel, son Dennis, brothers Delbert and Virgil, and daughter-in-law Robbin (Shipps) Jensen, as well as numerous brothers- and sisters-in-law and relatives from the Grothen, Jensen, and Kampbell families.

Whenever you hear the song, “I Love You a Bushel and a Peck”, think of Eileen.

Memorials may be sent to St. John’s Lutheran Church - 2090 Emerson, Alliance, Nebraska 69301.

Visitation will be held Sunday, October 19, 2025 from 4:00-6:00pm at Bates-Gould Funeral Home in Alliance.

Celebration of Life Service will be held Monday, October 20, 2025 at 10:00am at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alliance. Pastor Megan Morrow will officiate and burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.&nbsp;

Eileen Adeline Grothen Jensen (1933 - 2025)

Dennis Eugene Robbins went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 12, 2025. After several years of physical challenges, Dennis is now walking pain free on Streets of Gold.

Dennis was born to Walter and Patricia (Zobel) Robbins on December 19, 1951 and grew up on the family farm Southwest of Alliance, Nebraska where his love of farming and the outdoors bloomed.&nbsp; He attended District 16 rural school through the 8th&nbsp;grade and graduated from Alliance High School in 1970.

Dennis married Denise Clapper on October 24, 1976 and together they built a life on the land they loved.&nbsp; Dennis and Denise raised three feral boys, Ian (1978), Jeremy (1980) and Dennis, Jr (1982) who ran free and terrorized the countryside.&nbsp;

Dennis carried his love of the outdoors and farming to the Sahara Desert in Algeria from 1986-1988 where he drilled water wells for Sargent Irrigation.&nbsp; Dennis finished his working career with BNSF as an engineer from 1988 to 2014.&nbsp; Dennis continued to farm in 2025 including putting up hay when he could and closely supervising the rest of the time.

Dennis enjoyed traveling and took numerous trips ranging from the Grand Canyon, the Redwoods, the Black Hills, and even New Zealand.&nbsp;&nbsp; For several years, as a Scout Master with the Boy Scouts, Dennis took many camping trips with his sons in Western Nebraska, South Dakota, and Colorado.&nbsp;

Dennis loved to cook and share his love of food with others.&nbsp;&nbsp; His culinary repertoire ranged from homestyle country cooking to gourmet dishes.&nbsp; Many people enjoyed the gift of his fresh baked artisan bread, and nobody left his home hungry.&nbsp;

Dennis loved his family, especially his grandchildren, and he proudly went to dance recitals, musicals, taekwondo meets and bluegrass festivals.&nbsp;

Combining his love of the land and hunting became a gift that he shared with others as he taught and mentored many people in the art of shooting.&nbsp; Targets ranged from deer, doves, prairie dogs, or the infamous easter egg.&nbsp; Dennis always rejoiced with the new shooter who bagged their first deer.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Denise Robbins, his children Ian Robbins, Jeremy (Bethany) Robbins, and Dennis Robbins, Jr; grandchildren, Charity (Jesse) Dutton, Grant (Maggie) Robbins, Bob, Jun, Isaac, Callie, Brynlie, and Nolan Robbins, and great-grandchildren, Jaelyn and Jaxtyn Dutton.&nbsp; He is also survived by siblings, Patsy (Roger) Rohrbouck, Kenneth (Mary) Robbins, Beverly Robbins, Terry (Alice) Robbins, Bruce Robbins, and Randy Robbins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Patricia Robbins, his brothers, John, Martin, and Austie, and his sisters Juanita, Veris, and Vicki.

Dennis will be missed by those he left behind.

Memorial services will be held Friday, October 17, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. at the Alliance Berean Church.&nbsp; Pastor Glenn Johnson will officiate.

Dennis Eugene Robbins (1951 - 2025)

Gertrude Louise Potmesil, 97, passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025 in Greeley, CO where she had resided for the last 3 years. Gertrude (Gertie) was born on July 31, 1928 to Carl and Monica (Ruffing) Erny in Alliance, NE. She attended Alliance schools and graduated from Alliance High School in 1946. She enjoyed attending a variety of adult education classes throughout her life in many different areas.

She married William J. (Bill) Potmesil on October 30, 1947, residing on the family ranch and&nbsp;then the family farm north of Alliance.

She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance.

Gardening and her flower beds were her pride and joy, a showcase to those who drove by or&nbsp;stopped to visit. She loved putting up outside Christmas lights and decoration for all to see.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Bill Potmesil, brother and sister-in-law,&nbsp;Bill and Peg Erny, sister and brother-in-law, Thelma and Emmett Foley, brother-in-law, Jim and Polly Potmesil, sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Cleo and Burns Landrum, brother-in-law, Gene Potmesil, and son-in-law, Steve Snyder.

Surviving her are her son, John (Elaine) of Alliance, and grandchildren: Lark Potmesil of Alliance, NE and Melinda (Eric Ferguson) of St. Louis, MO.&nbsp; Her daughter, Connie Snyder, of Stockton, KS and grandchildren: Taakka (Rick) Belcher of Peyton, CO, and Stephanie Snyder of Stockton, KS and great-Grandchildren: Jacob Belcher, Misty Mann, Stormy Belcher and Great-Great-Grandchildren Kulua Mann, Jr. and Eliana Mann. Her daughter, Sharon (Warren) Sokol of Fort Collins, CO and grandchildren: Michelle Sokol and Kelly Sokol of Loveland, CO, Nicole Sokol (Chester Rubbo) of Greenwood Village, CO. Gertrude (Gertie) was born on July 31, 1928 to Carl and Monica (Ruffing) Erny in Alliance, NE. She attended Alliance schools and graduated from Alliance High School in 1946. She enjoyed attending a variety of adult education classes throughout her life in many different areas.She married William J. (Bill) Potmesil on October 30, 1947, residing on the family ranch and&nbsp;then the family farm north of Alliance.She was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance.Gardening and her flower beds were her pride and joy, a showcase to those who drove by or&nbsp;stopped to visit. Gertrude Louise Potmesil (1928 - 2025)

Joe Elbert Roten was born July 21, 1928, and entered eternal life on October 10, 2025, at the age of 97.

Joe was born in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas and left Texas for a better life in 1944, at the age of 16.

Joe was married to Mary Bell Randolph on August 30, 1944, and to that union three children were born:&nbsp; Paul, Tanna (Janice), and Julianna (Mary Jo).

Joe was married to Nona Woodhams on August 31, 1962, and to that union two children were born:&nbsp; Troy and Nolene.&nbsp;

Joe was employed by the railroad most of his life beginning in October 1944. He held various positions and moved many times with his family until settling in Alliance, Nebraska in August 1949.&nbsp; Prior to arriving in Alliance, he worked in Bridgeport, Sidney, Holyoke (CO), Dalton, Guernsey (WY), Grover (CO), and western Kansas. He left Alliance briefly in 1958 and returned in 1961.&nbsp; He retired as an assistant chief-dispatcher for BNSF in June 1993.&nbsp; His total time with the railroad was 48 years and 2 months.&nbsp;

Part of his railroad training included telegraphy. During WWII, Joe worked in the Bridgeport Western Union office and witnessed the most memorable message in his career.&nbsp; The woman working with him transcribed information that her own son had been killed in the war.&nbsp; Joe retold this story many times over the years.&nbsp; It obviously affected him deeply.

Joe was very active in the First Baptist Church in Alliance starting in 1961, where he served on many boards, taught Sunday School, and helped in the maintenance of the church building and landscaping.&nbsp;

In addition to the First Baptist Church Joe was active over the years in American Baptist Men, Northwestern Association of American Baptist Churches of Nebraska, The Gideon’s International, Meals on Wheels, Panhandle Forum, and Housing Authority of the City of Alliance.&nbsp; He also helped untold numbers of neighbors and friends by assisting them with yard work, taking them to doctors appointments, and being their support when they needed it.

Upon retirement in 1993, Joe continued his service to his community and enjoyed walks, tennis, working in his yard, reading, serving his church, spending time with his family, and watching sports, especially anything Nebraska Cornhuskers related.&nbsp;

In 1996, the Northwestern Association of American Baptist Churches of Nebraska awarded Joe the “Layman of the Year” for Alliance.

In 1997, the Kiwanis Club of Alliance honored Joe as an important “Layman of the Church” for the First Baptist Church.

In 2001, Joe was awarded “Layman of the Year” by the American Baptist Men of Nebraska.&nbsp; “In recognition of his dedicated service to God, Church and fellow man.”

In 2017, Joe and Nona relocated to Colorado Springs, CO to be near their children and grandchildren.&nbsp; Troy and Nolene are especially grateful to be able to spend more time with Joe and Nona in the sunset of their lives.

Nona preceded Joe in death on January 14, 2018.&nbsp; He was also preceded in death by his son Paul, his parents, three siblings who died in infancy and his remaining twelve siblings.&nbsp; He is survived by his children Tanna, Julianna, Troy and Nolene, as well as many grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended family.

We believe Joe left this world a better place for having been in it for over 97 years. His legacy will be his extensive service to his community, his love of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, his endless ability to tell jokes and stories, his great laugh and smile, his love for his family, and most of all his unwavering faith.&nbsp; He was a friend to all, and he will be missed by so many.

We want to thank the wonderful staff at Liberty Heights and the Choice Hospice caregivers.&nbsp; The kind and caring people at both facilities provided daily friendship and excellent care for Joe.&nbsp; We are eternally grateful.

Julia Ann (Julie) Belden Onken was born May 13,1950 in Alliance, NE to Donald L. and Vida Lea Belden. She passed away October 1, 2025 in Centennial, CO following an extended illness.

Julie grew up in Bridgeport, Nebraska and graduated from Bridgeport High School in 1968. She was married in 1968 and her daughter, Annessa Lynn was born in 1972. Through the years she was fortunate to live and work in Nebraska, the Philippines, Ohio, and Wyoming.

Julie was proud of her career as a nurse, obtaining an LPN degree in the early 1970’s and later achieving her RN degree in Scottsbluff, NE. While residing in Wheatland and Torrington she worked for Banner Health Systems hospitals. In 1989, she began working in Long Term Care at Goshen Care Center as Director of Nursing and later became the Resident Assessment Coordinator until her retirement. She made many good friends with coworkers and residents over the years.

Following her retirement, Julie lived in Laramie for a brief time, then moved to Parker, CO with her significant other, Dale Hoke. She lived her final 12 years happily in Parker, enjoying their companionship immensely.

Julie is survived by her daughter, special grandson Gregory Booth, and five additional grandchildren Becca, Stephanie, Ryan, Sean, and Conner. Other survivors include her sisters Becky (Gary) Bangert of Orlando, FL and Paula (Stan) Schoenemann of Crawford, NE, and their families.

&nbsp;Jack Nielsen (John David), March 10, 1939, to October 2, 2025 (86 years), was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Alliance, Nebraska to Jens Christian Nielsen and his wife Edna Gertrude Morehead.&nbsp; He graduated May 24, 1956, as Alliance High School Valedictorian and headed to the University of Nebraska, joining Delta Upsilon Fraternity.&nbsp; Jack participated in many activities at the University.&nbsp; On May 2, 1959, he was initiated into the Society of Innocents and from 1959-1960 he was President of the University of Nebraska Student Council.&nbsp; Jack received a degree in Mechanical Engineering.&nbsp; He then served time in the Army Reserves, spending six months stationed in El Paso, Texas working on the missile program.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; After his time in the army reserves, Jack returned home to farm in Alliance and worked on the BN railroad in the winter.&nbsp; The Burlington Northern offered him a position in Lincoln, Nebraska as train master. While there, Jack joined IBM in 1966.&nbsp; In May of 1967, he met his wife Barbara, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska.&nbsp; They were married November 18, 1967.&nbsp; They had a daughter Chris in 1970 and moved to Chicago in 1972 with IBM.&nbsp; Barbara finished her doctoral thesis and their daughter Beth was born in 1973.&nbsp; In 1974 daughter Sara was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana where Jack was an IBM Marketing Manager.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Soon Jack and family were back in Kenilworth, Illinois with IBM where Jack decided his life goal was to return home to Alliance and farm.&nbsp; He started Diamond Hill Farms in Alliance, Nebraska in January 1977 and expanded locations to Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas while a chip grower for Frito Lay.&nbsp; In addition, he served on the board of Western Nebraska Savings Company, the Alliance Cooperative, and on the Potato Board.

In 2010, he bought Nebraska Northwestern Railroad in Chadron and later bought an investment property in Durango, Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp; Still his heart was in Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; He loved Alliance and its people.&nbsp; He was proud of his life as a potato farmer.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jack woke up the morning of October 2 with an aortic aneurism.&nbsp; The Alliance Police Department was quick to respond along with the Ambulance Services.&nbsp; The Emergency Department at Box Butte General was ready, efficient, and compassionate.&nbsp; Barbara can never say enough good things about the courtesy and concern of all who helped her.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jack is leaving behind his wife, Barbara; his three daughters, Chris Collins (Michael Collins) of Alliance, Nebraska, Beth Cuevas of Frisco, Texas, and Sara Glinatsis of Monument, Colorado; his seven grandchildren, Cameron and Jack Collins, Avery, Brooks, and Victor Cuevas, and George and Marcus Glinatsis.&nbsp; His son-in-law Michael Collins, along with Michael’s loving family have been an essential element of Alliance strength. Barbara and Jack would have been married 58 years this November 18, 2025.&nbsp; Jack will miss attending the wedding of his first grandson Cameron to Rachael Krinke this December.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jack’s family will be having a Celebration of Life Lunch and Memorial Service at West Side Event Center on November 1, 2025, beginning about 11:30 a.m.&nbsp;&nbsp; Barbara hopes to see many of the DHF farms past employees along with Jack and her friends there with memories of happy times.&nbsp; Please wear white to remember Jack as that was his favorite color.&nbsp; &nbsp;Please email barbara@allophone.com if you will be able to attend and talk with the family.&nbsp;

While there, Jack joined IBM in 1966.&nbsp; In May of 1967, he met his wife Barbara, a graduate student at the University of Nebraska.&nbsp; They were married November 18, 1967.&nbsp; They had a daughter Chris in 1970 and moved to Chicago in 1972 with IBM.&nbsp; Barbara finished her doctoral thesis and their daughter Beth was born in 1973.&nbsp; In 1974 daughter Sara was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana where Jack was an IBM Marketing Manager.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Soon Jack and family were back in Kenilworth, Illinois with IBM where Jack decided his life goal was to return home to Alliance and farm.&nbsp; He started Diamond Hill Farms in Alliance, Nebraska in January 1977 and expanded locations to Wyoming, Colorado, and Texas while a chip grower for Frito Lay.&nbsp; In addition, he served on the board of Western Nebraska Savings Company, the Alliance Cooperative, and on the Potato Board.In 2010, he bought Nebraska Northwestern Railroad in Chadron and later bought an investment property in Durango, Colorado.&nbsp;&nbsp; Still his heart was in Alliance, Nebraska.&nbsp; He loved Alliance and its people.&nbsp; He was proud of his life as a potato farmer.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jack woke up the morning of October 2 with an aortic aneurism.&nbsp; The Alliance Police Department was quick to respond along with the Ambulance Services.&nbsp; The Emergency Department at Box Butte General was ready, efficient, and compassionate.&nbsp; Barbara can never say enough good things about the courtesy and concern of all who helped her.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Jack is leaving behind his wife, Barbara; his three daughters, Chris Collins (Michael Collins) of Alliance, Nebraska, Beth Cuevas of Frisco, Texas, and Sara Glinatsis of Monument, Colorado; his seven grandchildren, Cameron and Jack Collins, Avery, Brooks, and Victor Cuevas, and George and Marcus Glinatsis.&nbsp; His son-in-law Michael Collins, along with Michael’s loving family have been an essential element of Alliance strength. It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Leo John Kriz Jr. John, 63, passed from this life on September 24th, 2025.

John was born March 25, 1962, in Alliance Nebraska, to Leo and Barbara (Thornton) Kriz. John spent his early years on the family farm.

John a lifelong resident of Hemingford, Nebraska was known for his hard-working spirit and strong work ethic. Having held various positions, including roles in the Village of Hemingford, and Union Pacific Railroad where he recently served as a freight conductor.

John's community remembers him as a good friend, known for his quick wit, infectious laughter, and gentle kind nature. John's time on earth is most significantly defined by his love of family, with his children representing his greatest accomplishments. And they remember his sincere heart, love and unwavering commitment. Margaret, John's wife, finds solace in their beautiful friendship, which blossomed into a love meant to last forever. She will cherish the dreams and memories and believes they will meet again.

John is preceded in death by parents Leo and Barbara Kriz and granddaughter, Maddie Dee Nunez.&nbsp; John is survived by his wife Margaret, daughters, Kayla Marie Behm and husband Mark of Lincoln Nebraska, Emily Jensen and husband Michael of Council Bluffs, Iowa and son, Daniel Kriz of Omaha, Nebraska. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Danielle McClure and husband Steven Zaremba of Oak Harbor, Washington, grandsons, Gary and Logan of Oak Harbor Washington, his sisters, Cindy Davies of Hemingford, Nebraska and Kathy McGowan and husband Jeff of Hot Springs, South Dakota, his brother Timothy Kriz and wife Laurel of Hemingford Nebraska and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members.

A celebration of life will be held at the American Legion in Hemingford Nebraska on Saturday, October 11th at 1:00pm. It was well-known by all who knew John how much he loved and was devoted to his favorite sports team, the Nebraska Cornhuskers, so let's honor John and dress appropriately.

Daniel T. Thompson, age 75 of Alliance, NE passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at Unity Medical Center of Grafton, ND.

Daniel Thomas Thompson was born December 12, 1949 to the late Thomas and Junice (Holt) Thompson in Grafton, ND.&nbsp; He was raised on the family farm with his five brothers.&nbsp; He attended Park River Schools and graduated from the Walsh County Ag School.&nbsp; After graduation, he began farming with his father and brother Doug.&nbsp; He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Barbara Lee on December 16, 1967 at Zion Lutheran Church of rural Hoople.&nbsp; They made their home in rural Grafton, where they continued to farm and raise their children.&nbsp; In 1985, Daniel and his brothers began farming together as the TF Thompson &amp; Sons, Inc.&nbsp; Daniel loved his family and farming.&nbsp; In 1995, he and Barbara moved to Alliance, NE where he began farming with his son Joe.&nbsp; He was a part of daily operations on the farm until recently when medical issues required him to take a step back.&nbsp;&nbsp; His perseverance and work ethic made him the incredible brother, father, grandfather, and friend that he will be remembered as.&nbsp;

Daniel loved a teaching moment, whether about farming or life.&nbsp; He coached Grafton youth hockey and trapshooting at the Walsh County Gun Club.&nbsp; He enjoyed refereeing hockey, playing in the “Old Timers” hockey league, fishing, and hunting.&nbsp; He cherished his time with his brothers, his children, and especially his grandchildren.&nbsp; He was a lifelong member of the Walsh County Gun Club.&nbsp; He served on several boards through his years of farming, such as the Nash Grain Board and the NE Potato Certification Board.&nbsp; He was the National Seed Grower of the Year in 2007.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Daniel is survived by his children: Patricia Thompson, Osceola, WI, Brenda (Alan) Bergum, Detroit Lakes, MN, and Joseph (Rebecca) Thompson, Alliance, NE; grandchildren: Danielle and Nicole Annunziata; Jessica, John, and Ryan Bergum; and Ian, Logan, and Tate Thompson; brothers: Doug (Kay), Jim (Alyce), Rick (Pam), Ron (Jennifer), and Tom (Angela); his “best pal” Gracie; and special friend Eileen Codina.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents and wife Barbara.
