🏐🥎🏈| High School Scores Across Western Nebraska - Thursday



CHADRON, Neb. -- Sept. 8, 2020 --&nbsp;Rodeo will open Chadron State's sports competition for the 2020-21 school year this weekend.

The college's annual rodeo will be at the Dawes County Fairgrounds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Contestants from a dozen schools that make up the Central Rocky Mountain Region will compete. CSC Rodeo Coach&nbsp;Dustin Luper&nbsp;said the rodeo has exactly 500 entries.

"I think we'll have great support," Luper said. "People are glad they'll be able to get out and do something like this."&nbsp;

The contestants also are eager to compete. While five regional rodeos took place last fall, the spring schedule was cancelled and the College National Finals Rodeo always held in Casper in June, also was called off because of the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The official performances this weekend will be at 7:00 Friday and Saturday nights. There also will be large sessions of "slack" starting at 1 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, since there will be too many entries for the nighttime shows.

The grand finale, or championship go-round, will be at 10 a.m. Sunday.&nbsp; That's when the top 10 contestants in each of the nine events from the previous sessions will vie for top honors.

Cowboy church also will take place in the grandstand at the fairgrounds at 8 a.m. Sunday. It's open to the public without charge.&nbsp;&nbsp;

There are 14 women and 16 men on this year's CSC rosters. Seniors make up half of the women's team. The men's team is younger with only two seniors on the roster, but it will be bolstered by the return of&nbsp;Rowdy Moon&nbsp;of Sargent.&nbsp;

Moon is a CSC graduate assistant coach this year and has been granted a fifth year of eligibility.&nbsp; He was the bareback runner-up in the region in 2017-18 and rode all three of his broncs at the College National Finals Rodeo that year.

Another competitive Chadron State cowboy last fall was&nbsp;Tate Petrak&nbsp;of Martin, S.D.&nbsp; Now a senior, he placed among the top six in steer wrestling at four regional rodeos and was among the 10 finalists at the fifth.&nbsp;

In addition,&nbsp;Carson Good&nbsp;of Long Valley, S.D., was second in steer wrestling at last year's CSC rodeo and Colton Storer of Arthur placed in tie down roping twice last fall when he was a freshman.

Luper said he believes several of the freshmen will do well in timed events.&nbsp;

Leaders for the women's team will include Quincey Segelke of Douglas, Wyo., who is returning for another year after being third in breakaway roping and sixth in goat tying through the five rodeos last fall.&nbsp; Segelke also tied for first in the opening go-round of breakaway roping with a 2.1-second run and placed in the top 10 in the second go-round in 2.6 seconds at the 2019 CNFR.

Marissa Cominiello of Burlington, Colo.,&nbsp;Hanna Hostutler&nbsp;of Philip, S.D.; and&nbsp;Brianna Williams&nbsp;of Buffalo, S.D., are other CSC cowgirls who have often reached the finals during their careers.

Besides riding barebacks, Moon will help protect the bull riders along with North Dakotan Gus Kornberg.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

A former bull fighter, Sugar Ray Quinn of Rapid City, is returning as the PA announcer.

All the stock is coming from South Dakota.&nbsp; Spud Creek Rodeo at Interior will furnish the rough stock and Allen Good of Long Valley and Joe Waln of Martin are providing the livestock for the timed events.

General admission is just $5 per performance. Youths 12 and under will be admitted free.&nbsp; There is no charge for CSC students and employees.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Wil Myers homered twice, including San Diego’s seventh grand slam of the season, Austin Nola hit a three-run shot and Mike Clevinger was impressive in his home debut for the Padres, who routed the Colorado Rockies 14-5. 

The Padres, cruising toward their first postseason appearance since 2006, won their third straight and for the seventh time in nine games. Myers hit his slam in the five-run first inning and then homered leading off the seventh to match his single-game high of five RBIs. His 11th homer gave him his eighth career multi-homer game.

Shun Yamaguchi allowed one run in two innings of relief to earn the win. The Yankees have dropped five straight and 15 of 20 to fall to 21-21. They sit behind the Blue Jays and first-place Rays in the AL East.

— Juan Soto drove in a run in his return to the lineup and the Nationals used strong relief pitching to beat the Rays 5-3 and sweep the two-game series. Soto missed five games with left elbow soreness.

— The Orioles homered four times as Ryan Mountcastle belted a two-run blast and Rio Ruiz added a three-run shot in an 11-2 dismantling of the Mets. The Orioles won their fourth straight and improved to 20-21, moving within a half-game of the slumping Yankees for the second wild-card spot.

— The Twins and Cardinals split a doubleheader in St. Louis. Josh Donaldson, Nelson Cruz and Miguel Sanó all homered to lead the Minnesota Twins to a 7-3 victory in the first game. Jose Berrios picked up the win, striking out eight but allowing three runs and four hits over five innings.

— Matt Wieters hit 14 foul balls during a 19-pitch at-bat that ended with a flyout as the Cards scratched out a 6-4 win in the nightcap. The Redbirds scored five runs in third, including a pair of bases-loaded walks, a hit batter and a fielder’s choice.

— Pinch-runner Jason Martin scored the winning run on catcher Yasmani Grandal’s error in the bottom of the ninth as the Pirates rallied for a 5-4 victory over the White Sox. The error came after Grandal hit a two-run home run and Jose Abreu extended his hitting streak to 21 games for Chicago.

— Khris Davis homered and hit an RBI double against previously unbeaten Zack Greinke as the Athletics dealt the Astros their sixth straight loss, 4-2 in Game 1 of a doubleheader.

— The Astros ended their skid by getting a tiebreaking, sacrifice fly from Yuli Gurriel in the seventh inning of a 5-4 win against Oakland. The split keeps Houston 4 1/2 games behind the AL-West-leading A’s.

— Kansas City snapped a seven-game losing streak by beating the Indians 8-6. Maikel Franco drove in the go-ahead run with a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning and had an RBI single in the ninth for the Royals.

— Elvis Andrus homered and the Rangers snapped a six-game slide with a 7-1 win over the Angels. Lance Lynn struck out six, walked two and limited Los Angeles to one run on four hits over seven innings to help Texas end the Angels’ five-game winning streak.

— The Dodgers pulled out a 10-9 win over the Diamondbacks by tying it with a four-run eighth before surviving a wild 10th inning. (AP) — Paul George scored 32 points, Kawhi Leonard added 23 along with a big late block and the dynamic duo helped the Los Angeles Clippers rally in the fourth quarter for a 113-107 win over the Denver Nuggets in Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal series. Leonard did a little bit of everything as he grabbed 14 rebounds and dished out six assists. He also had two blocks, including one late on a shot by Jamal Murray at the rim. 

Los Angeles grabbed a 2-1 lead in the series. Clippers coach Doc Rivers called a timeout to calm down the Clippers with 8:29 left and trailing 97-90. Fueled by defense, Los Angeles went on a 14-4 run to take a 104-101 lead. Nikola Jokic had 32 points, 12 rebounds and eight assists for Denver.

Celtics closing in on eliminating defending champs

— The Boston Celtics are one victory away from knocking off the defending NBA Champions. The Celts own a 3-2 series lead after Jaylen Brown scored 27 points in a 111-89 blowout over the Raptors. Kemba Walker scored 21 for the Celtics, whose starters outscored Toronto’s top five by a whopping 93-45.

The Raptors shot 2-for-15 during its first 15 possessions to fall behind 18-5. A 23-7 Boston run put the Celtics up by 28 late in the first half.

Fred VanVleet scored 18 for Toronto, which trailed by as many as 30. Norman Powell scored 16 for the Raptors, but Pascal Siakam and Kyle Lowry managed 10 points apiece.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jurickson Profar hit an RBI double with no outs in the ninth inning and the San Diego Padres, who got a brilliant performance from right-hander Dinelson Lamet, beat the Colorado Rockies 1-0 for their sixth victory in eight games. The games will be at Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction at noon on October 10, against South Dakota Mines at 5 p.m., October 17 at Elliott Field in Chadron; against Black Hills State at 2 p.m., October 24 in Chadron; at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on Halloween night, October 31, at 4 p.m., and at Black Hills State on November 14 at 1 p.m. The schedule is subject to revision, should the feasibility of playing contests change in the future. Each participant is expected to comply with NCAA Resocialization of Sport principles issued by the association this summer. LINCOLN, Neb.-A Lincoln man who gave an impassioned speech at a Lincoln City Council meeting on changing the name of chicken wings, crashed a Scott Frost news conference on Friday.

Ander Christensen became an internet sensation after he suggested that Lincoln lead the way in changing the name of chicken wings to "saucy nugs" and various other names.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - In an age of growing divisive political discourse across the country, a Nebraska man is drawing attention for his impassioned plea to take action - against boneless chicken wings.

Video of Ander Christensen's satirical rant before the Lincoln City Council on Monday pleading to ban the "boneless chicken wing" moniker has garnered widespread attention on social media and news sites.

Christensen, who is the son of a council member, made his case that the meat in boneless wings doesn't come from a chicken's wing at all, but from its breast.

"We've been living a lie for far too long," he told the council.

Instead, he suggested the dish could be renamed, "buffalo-style chicken tenders, wet tenders, saucy nugs or trash."

His plea, of course, was for the children.

"Our children are afraid of having bones attached to their meat, which is where meat comes from. It grows on bones!" he said. "We need to teach them that the wings of a chicken are from a chicken, and it's delicious."

🏐🏈| High School Football & Volleyball Scoreboard - Friday, September 4

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is utilizing pod scheduling to play a majority of the fall 2020 postponed season, and games will begin in late January 2021.

According to the conference, four-day windows between Thursday and Sunday will be available for matches with three teams playing at a pod host site.&nbsp; 

Chadron State had not published official game days or opponents on its athletics website as of this article Friday morning, and is likely still working out the exact days to play in conjunction with basketball season and potential pandemic-related changes that may be coming to those schedules.

Here's what the RMAC shows will be Chadron State's volleyball schedule for the "Spring" 2021 season:

January 21-24:&nbsp; UCCS pod host with CSC and Westminster

February 4-7: CSC pod host with Colorado Mesa and CSU-Pueblo

Nuggets crushed in Game 1 of West semis, 120-97 Clippers

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Terence "Bud" Crawford is looking for a fight.

The undefeated WBO welterweight champion has never fought less than twice in a calendar year as a professional. He faces the possibility of being idle all of 2020.

Has Crawford, in the prime of his career at 32, gotten antsy?

"Actually, no," he said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I've been using this time for resting my body. I'm getting to spend more time with my kids and am just taking the good with the bad."

He continues to train every day. Shortly after coming through the door to his Omaha gym, a shouting Crawford asked manager-trainer Brian "BoMac" McIntyre for the day's plan and immediately changed into sweat clothes. Crawford has been helping WBO 130-pound champion Jamel Herring and unbeaten 168-pound contender Steven Nelson prepare for fights in Las Vegas this weekend.

"I get in here and work out with the fighters that have fight dates," Crawford said. "Normally, I'm running with them, doing strength and conditioning, sparring."

Crawford (36-0, 27 KOs) hasn't had a fight since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8d8eea79d24723a57fd50ef59101e6db" target="_blank">he stopped Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the ninth round&nbsp;</a>at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 14.

Regarded as one of the world's top pound-for-pound fighters and a winner of belts in three divisions, Crawford has long wanted a shot at eight-division champion and current WBA welterweight super title-holder Manny Pacquiao. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has been unable to make that fight so far.

Negotiations are underway to get Crawford a November date with the Kell Brook (39-2, 27 KOs). Brook is a former IBF welterweight champ who now is the WBO No. 10 at 154 pounds. He would have to come down a weight class to face Crawford.

Meanwhile, Crawford is on the outside looking in as top welterweights handled by Top Rank's rival promoter, Premier Boxing Champions, have been able to fight during the coronavirus pandemic.

Shawn Porter won a unanimous decision against Sebastian Formella on Aug. 23 in a WBC/IBF world title eliminator. WBC/IBF champion Errol Spence Jr. has a Fox pay-per-view fight against Danny Garcia on Nov. 21.

Jamal James won a unanimous decision over Thomas Dulorme to get in line to face Pacquiao or the winner of Sunday's Yordenis Ugas-Abel Ramos bout.

Former unified welterweight champ Keith Thurman, also a PBC fighter and the No. 4 WBC contender, has called on Crawford to be his first opponent after a layoff of more than a year following his loss to Pacquiao.

"It all comes down to money," Crawford said of crossing over to face one of the PBC boxers. "If the money was put up, those fights would be made."

Purses have taken a hit because of the pandemic, with many venues not yet open to fans. Plus, Arum and PBC founder Al Haymon have had a cold relationship, though media outlets have reported the two are more willing to do business with each other since a federal anti-trust lawsuit brought by Arum was settled in the spring.

Crawford said he can afford to be patient, noting that his best money-making years are still ahead of him.

"I don't feel like I'm about to be 33," he said. "I never drank, never smoked. I took care of my body. Only thing a person can actually say about me is that I ate a lot of sweets. That's it. My body is very preserved."

As impressive as his record is, Crawford hasn't garnered the respect he believes he's due. Critics say his resume is missing a career-defining fight.

"The only reason they say that is because of how dominant I've been," he said.

Crawford rolled off a list of opponents he's beaten: Amir Khan, Viktor Postol, Yuriokis Gamboa, John Molina Jr., Ricky Burns, Raymundo Beltran.

"Ricky Burns, he became champion after (fighting) me. Beltran, he became champion after me. A lot of people discredit those types of fighters," Crawford said. "Then everybody gets their credit for beating those types of fighters. But me, being on the pedestal that I am, they look at me and say, 'Oh, well, those are just steppingstone fights.' "

Winning a unified championship at 147 would go a long way in accomplishing his long-held goal of going down as one of the sport's all-time greats. He already has been an undisputed light welterweight champion and the WBO lightweight title-holder.

"They'll give me my credit when I retire," Crawford said. "Muhammad Ali, a lot of people didn't like him. He was the villain. A lot of people didn't like Mike Tyson, they just knew he was going to knock somebody out. A lot of people say Mike Tyson didn't fight nobody. A lot of people don't like Floyd Mayweather, but they respect him because of how talented he is.

"So when I look at it, I'm never going to get the just due. Just continue to keep winning. That's it."

Unbeaten Terence Crawford hoping to fight before year ends

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The University of Nebraska at Omaha has quarantined four of its sports teams after some athletes tested positive for the coronavirus, even as data show the state approaching 400 COVID-19 deaths.

UNO shut down workouts and quarantined members this week of its men's basketball, women's softball, men's baseball and women's volleyball teams, the Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/local/education/four-uno-sports-teams-quarantined-after-athletes-test-positive-for-covid-19/article_1c566098-0623-5a01-9b2a-405072596df2.html#tracking-source=home-top-story-1" target="_blank">reported</a>. That came after the results of 13 UNO athletes who were tested on Friday came back positive for the virus.

News of UNO's outbreak comes as colleges around the country deal with rising case numbers as schools try to reconvene for the fall.

None of the UNO athletes who tested positive have shown any symptoms, UNO Chancellor Jeffrey Gold said Wednesday.

Each of the four teams had at least two athletes who tested positive, Gold said. Through Tuesday, 38 students and nine employees had tested positive at UNO. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln reported 245 positive results among students, faculty and staff through August.

The state's online tracker shows that as of Thursday, nearly 35,000 people have tested positive for the virus and 399 have died from it. The 7-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska has risen over the past two weeks from 256.43 new cases per day on Aug. 19 to 318 new cases per day on Sept. 2.
