DENVER (AP) — Eric Hosmer started San Diego's power surge with a three-run homer in the first, Chris Paddack threw six efficient innings and the Padres routed the Colorado Rockies 13-2 on Sunday. 

Hosmer’s homer was one of five for the Padres, who rank second in the majors with 66 this season. Jake Cronenworth added a two-run drive in the seventh before Jurickson Profar and Trent Grisham lined solo shots in the eighth. Josh Naylor finished it off with a towering two-run homer in the ninth. Paddack pounded the strike zone in picking up his first win since Aug. 3. 

Rockies starter Ryan Castellani lasted two innings and allowed five runs.&nbsp;

Dom Smith was tearful on Wednesday, grateful on Thursday and gleeful on Friday afternoon.

Smith belted a tiebreaking solo homer while the New York Mets scored five times in the sixth inning to beat the Yankees, 6-4 in Game 1 of a doubleheader. The homer came two days after he made an impassioned statement about racial injustice in the wake of the Jacob Blake shooting in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The Mets responded by rallying around Smith on Thursday, staging an on-field demonstration with the Miami Marlins before the two teams boycotted their game.

The Yankees led 4-1 until the Mets homered three times in the sixth. Pete Alonso tied it with a three-run blast and Jake Marisnick gave the Mets breathing room with a solo shot.

Clint Frazier belted a two-run homer and had three RBIs for the Yankees, who have dropped six straight since a six-game winning streak.

Smith also hit an RBI single in the nightcap, but the Mets completed a sweep by defeating the Yankees, 4-3 on Amed Rosario’s two-run, walk-off homer off Aroldis Chapman in the seventh. The Mets scored nine of their 10 runs in the doubleheader from the fifth inning on.

The opener of the doubleheader was the first game on Jackie Robinson Day. Robinson first met with Dodgers owner Branch Rickey on Aug. 28, 1945 to discuss breaking the color barrier in baseball, and the 1963 March on Washington was held on the same day. Jackie Robinson Day is usually April 15, the day of his first major league game. The date was moved when the major league season had to be delayed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

— The Astros-Athletics game in Houston was the 11th to be boycotted by big league players since Wednesday. The two teams took their positions on the field and headed toward the clubhouses after a moment of silence. A Black Lives Matter T-shirt was draped across home plate.

— The sizzling White Sox wasted a one-run lead in the ninth before Yasmani Grandal hit a walk-off blast in the bottom half to give Chicago its 10th win in 11 games, 6-5 versus the Royals. Eloy Jimenez and Luis Robert also homered for the White Sox, who lead the AL with 62 round-trippers.

— Franmil Reyes was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer and five RBIs as part of the Indians’ 20-hit attack in a 14-2 laugher over the Cardinals. Carlos Santana and Tyler Naquin chipped in two-run homers as Cleveland moved into a three-way tie with Minnesota and Chicago for the AL Central lead.

— Ryan Yarbrough worked into the seventh inning and two relievers completed a five-hitter in the Rays’ 2-0 shutout of the Marlins. Yarbrough struck out five and allowed four hits over 6 2/3 frames of Tampa Bay’s 12th win in 15 games.

— The Blue Jays pulled out a 5-4 win over the Orioles on Randal Grichuk’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Teoscar Hernandez hit longballs in the fourth inning of Toronto’s ninth victory in 12 games.

— Mike Trout’s 11th home run of the year was the difference as the Angels downed the Mariners, 3-2. Andrew Heaney struck out 10 and limited Seattle to a run and four hits over 7 2/3′s.

— Derek Dietrich’s solo homer broke a 2-2 tie in a four-run seventh that sent the Rangers past the Dodgers, 6-2. Texas starter Mike Minor scattered four hits over six innings and left with a 2-0 lead.

— Scott Kingery launched a three-run, walk-off homer in the 11th inning to lift the Phillies past the Braves, 7-4. Andrew McCutchen and Jean Segura belted two-run homers for the Phils, who almost wasted a good starting pitching performance after Zack Wheeler held Atlanta to one earned run over 5 2/3 innings.

— The Reds picked up a 6-5 win over the Cubs behind Tyler Mahle, who gave up two solo homers but no other hits while fanning 11 over 6 2/3 innings. Eugenio Suarez, Jess Winker and Freddy Galvis smacked solo homers in Cincinnati’s third victory in a row.

— Jedd Gyorko belted two of the Brewers’ four home runs in a 9-1 rout of the Pirates. Ryan Braun and Jacob Nottingham also left the yard to back Corbin Burnes, who fanned 10 while firing three-hit ball over six shutout innings.

— The Diamondbacks’ eight-game losing streak is over after Starling Marte and Christian Walker drove in two runs apiece in a 7-4 decision over the Giants. Winning pitcher Zac Gallen was terrific and opening the season with six straight no-decisions, holding San Francisco to a run and five hits over seven innings.

Husker football player group suing Big Ten to reinstate season

PHOENIX (AP) — Charlie Blackmon hit a grand slam to help Colorado build a big lead and the Rockies held on during a tense ninth inning to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 8-7. Blackmon’s second career slam made it 8-1 in the top of the eighth. After the Diamondbacks scored twice in the bottom half of the inning, they rallied for four runs in the ninth. Christian Walker’s two-run single — which was inches shy of being a game-winning homer — pulled the D-backs within an 8-7 margin. Jeff Hoffman earned his first big league save when Nick Ahmed struck out looking with the bases loaded to end the game. Colorado has won three straight. Arizona has lost eight in a row.

Ian Anderson had quite a major league debut on Wednesday, helping the Atlanta Braves put an end to Gerrit Cole’s lengthy winning streak. Anderson allowed just one hit over six innings of the Braves’ 5-1 win over the New York Yankees in Game 1 of a twinbill. Anderson had a no-hitter going until Luke Voit homered with one out in the sixth. The third overall pick in the 2016 draft struck out six and walked two.

Cole had won 20 straight regular-season decisions dating to May 2019, one off the American League record set by Roger Clemens. Ronald Acuña Jr. celebrated his return to the lineup by leading off with a 473-foot drive against Cole.

-- The Braves completed a sweep of the doubleheader as Freddie Freeman unloaded a two-run homer off Chad Green in the sixth inning of a 2-1 victory. Max Fried allowed four hits and one run in six strong innings to move to 5-0. Yanks starter Masahiro Tanaka was dominant, allowing only three hits in five scoreless innings as he left the second game with a 1-0 lead.

— Michael Perez hit a tiebreaking, solo homer in the eighth inning to give the Rays a 5-4 decision over the Orioles. Brandon Lowe (low) belted a two-run shot to help Tampa Bay win despite just five hits. The AL East leaders have won nine of 11.

— The Athletics beat Texas, 3-1 as Mike Fiers allowed only an unearned run and three hits over six innings. Fiers is 6-0 with a 3.18 ERA in his last nine starts against the Rangers, with his team winning each of those games. The A’s didn’t have a hit until Stephen Piscotty’s one-out RBI single tied the game in the sixth.

— The Indians put together a three-run eighth to knock off the Twins, 6-3. Tyler Naquin doubled home the tiebreaking run and scored on a single by Cesar Hernandez. Pitcher Mike Clevinger was good in his return to the Cleveland roster, limiting the AL Central leaders to two runs and eight hits while fanning six over six innings.

— Jose Abreu homered for the seventh time in five games to support Dallas Keuchelin the White Sox’s 10th win in 11 games, 10-3 over Pittsburgh. Keuchel allowed two runs on four hits and struck out seven over six innings for his third straight victory. Eloy Jiménez slugged a three-run homer, Danny Mendick lined a two-run drive and Edwin Encarnacion added a solo shot for Chicago.

— The Blue Jays blew out the Red Sox, 9-1 as Rowdy Tellez drove in four runs with two homers and a double. Vladimir Guererro Jr. hit a pair of doubles, including a three-run bouncer down the left field line which keyed a four-run seventh. Five Toronto pitchers combined to allow three hits, strike out seven and walk three.

— The Mets’ bullpen coughed up a 4-1 lead in the eighth before Wilson Ramos slapped an RBI single with two out in the bottom half to give New York a 5-4 victory against the Marlins. Jacob deGrom settled for another no-decision despite strikeout out 14 and holding Miami to a run and two hits over seven innings. Michael Conforto and Brandon Nimmo homered for the Mets.

— Aaron Nola bounced back from the shortest outing of his career and the Phillies took advantage of the Nationals’ sloppy outfield defense to rally for a 3-2 victory. Bryce Harper delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh to help Philadelphia win its third in a row. Nola gave up two runs on five hits while striking out eight over seven innings.

— Austin Romine’s RBI double sparked a five-run sixth before the Tigers completed a 7-5 win over the Cubs. Romine drove in a pair of runs while he and Jonathan Schoop, Miguel Cabrera and Cameron Maybin each collected three of Detroit’s 18 hits. Cubs starter Jon Lester allowed one run over five innings before the bullpen faltered.

— Kolten Wong drew a bases-loaded walk to cap a four-run ninth as the Cardinals stunned the Royals, 6-5. Tyler O’Neill tied the game with a two-out, two-run single. St. Louis outfielder Dexter Fowler and pitcher Jack Flaherty opted to sit out the contest in solidarity with players around the league in protest of the shooting of Jacob Blake.

The teams were set to begin Game 5 of their series shortly after 4 p.m. EST, with the Bucks needing a win to advance to the second round. Players had been discussing boycotting games in the bubble after the shooting of Jacob Blake, a Black man, by police in Kenosha, Wisconsin. 

More discussions were expected Wednesday, but even before that the Bucks apparently decided they would act. Magic players and referees were on the floor for the game but Milwaukee never took the floor.&nbsp; Former Kansas Jayhawk Frank Mason, is a member of the Bucks.&nbsp;

Following the Bucks decision, the other two playoff games Houston vs. Oklahoma City and Los Angeles vs. Portland have been postponed, according to the NBA.

The Rockies have won two straight games after dropping the previous seven and have pushed back to .500 with a 15-15 record. The Diamondbacks lost their seventh straight and fell to 13-18. The Rockies’ decisive rally came in the seventh. Story drew a one-out walk and stole second before coming home on Arenado’s double. Arenado scored on a passed ball to push the Rockies ahead 5-3.

In the Majors Tuesday - First No-Hitter Thrown by White Sox

The truncated major league season has its first no-hitter.

Lucas Giolito did the honors while leading the White Sox to a 4-0 shutout of the Pirates. The hollers of his teammates echoed around the ballpark after right fielder Adam Engel caught Erik Gonzalez’s slicing drive toward the line for the final out.

Giolito tied a career high with 13 strikeouts while tossing the White Sox’s 19th no-hitter and first since Phillip Humber’s (UHM'-burz) perfect game against the Mariners in 2012. Only a four-pitch walk to Gonzalez leading off the fourth inning got in Giolito’s way of perfection.

The right-hander threw 101 pitches and made quick work of the Pirates as Chicago won for the eighth time in nine.

— The Athletics coasted past the Rangers, 10-3 as Matt Olson and Marcus Semien connected on two-run homers and Stephen Piscotty lined a three-run double. Sean Manaea allowed one earned run over five innings as the lefty won his second straight start.

— Cristian Javier pitched into the sixth inning and the Astros put together a five-run first to take Game 1 of a doubleheader against the Angels, 6-3. Javier struck out five and allowed three runs and three hits over 5 2/3 innings, including Tommy La Stella’s solo homer.

Rockies win again in Arizona; Giolito throws season's first no-hitter

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) — Jamal Murray scored 33 of his 42 points in a second half where he played every minute and the Denver Nuggets avoided elimination by beating the Utah Jazz 117-107 in Game 5. The Nuggets trail the sixth-seeded Jazz 3-2 with Game 6 on Thursday. Murray was unstoppable down the stretch in nearly matching his 50-point effort in Game 4. He had eight assists, including a pass to Nikola Jokic for a 3-pointer with 23.6 that sealed the win.The dynamic tandem of Murray and Jokic clearly won’t ready to leave the NBA bubble just yet. Jokic had it going early as he scored 21 of his 31 points in the the first quarter. Donovan Mitchell finished with 30 points while wearing a pair of bright, multicolored shoes.

Clippers set record to take lead in series with Mavs

The Clippers took a three-games-to-two lead in their first-round series by setting a franchise record for points in a playoff game, 154-111 over the Mavericks. Kawhi Leonard scored 22 points and Paul George scored 18 while Los Angeles was building a 76-52 halftime lead. George broke out of a scoring slump with a team-high 35 points and Leonard added 32. Montrezl Harrell delivered 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Clippers.

Dallas guard Luka Doncic was held to 22 points on 6 of 17 shooting after pouring in 43 points on Sunday.

AHS announces guidelines for spectators at local events

(AP) The lab used by the NFL for COVID-19 tests says an isolated contamination caused 77 “most likely false positive results." In a statement, BioReference Laboratories says the test results on Saturday were contaminated during preparation at its lab in New Jersey. Eleven teams were affected, and the tests were reexamined and found to be false positives. The lab says all "individuals impacted have been confirmed negative and informed.”
