&nbsp;A Chadron State College football recruit who has Chadron ties has received a major honor from the National Football Foundation.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Dax Yeradi of Wright, Wyo., is one of 82 recent high school graduates from across the country who have been placed on the National Football Foundation’s 2020 Team of Distinction. Those selected are recognized for their combined performances on the football field, in the classroom and in the community.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Team of Distinction is part of the foundation’s mission to promote the scholar-athlete ideal by honoring the best and the brightest, according to the news release making the announcement.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; As part of the award, all of the honorees will be included in the permanent digital display at the Chick-fil-A College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta.

Dax Yeradi was a first-team all-state football selection each of the past three years while playing quarterback and safety for Wright High School.

As a senior in the fall of 2019, Yeradi was a Casper Star-Tribune Super 25 selection, was named the Powder River Conference Player of the Year and set the Wyoming All-Class State Record for most defensive points in a season with 331.&nbsp; His defensive highlights last fall included 151 tackles and four interceptions.

As the Wright High quarterback, he ran for 1,251 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2019.&nbsp; He also had passed for 301 yards and a TD.&nbsp;

During his career, Yeradi participated in 412 tackles and had 16 interceptions.&nbsp; He ran for 2,090 yards and 31 TDs, threw for 2,006 yards and 18 TDs, had 5,515 all-purpose yards and scored 204 points.

Dax is expected to play defensive back for the Eagles.&nbsp;

He was coached as Wright High by his father, Larry Yeradi, who intercepted eight passes to set the Chadron High school record as a senior in the fall of 1983. The record was tied by Charles Mann in 1998.&nbsp;

Besides starring in football, he was the Class 2A state champion 160-pound wrestler as a junior in 2019 when he had a 28-3 record.&nbsp; He also placed fifth and second at the state tourney during his wrestling career.

A year ago this spring, Yeradi won the Class 2A pole vault championship at the Wyoming State Meet by clearing 14 feet, 1 inch. He placed third at state the previous year.

In addition, he graduated with a 3.96 grade point average, was academic all-state and a member of the National Honor Society and student council.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; “This initiative allows us to shine a national spotlight on some of the most deserving high school student-athletes honored at the local level by our expansive Chapter Network,” said NFF Chairman Archie Manning. “This honor is one of the most prestigious national awards that a high school player can receive.&nbsp; It also brings into focus the phenomenal work that our chapters do in identifying the most outstanding young leaders in their communities.”

CSC football recruit receives national honor

(AP) Colorado Rockies outfielder Ian Desmond plans to sit out this season to be with his family and help grow youth baseball in his hometown in Florida. The 34-year-old Desmond wrote on Instagram that the “COVID-19 pandemic has made this baseball season one that is a risk I am not comfortable taking.”

 But the biracial slugger also mentioned a myriad of issues within baseball, including racism, sexism, homophobia and socioeconomic concerns. Desmond hit .255 with 20 homers in 140 games last season.

Registration for all CSC athletic camps may be completed online at chadronstatesportscamps.com.&nbsp;Those who are still unsure about participation in any summer camps may reserve a spot, without committing financially, by joining a free wait list on the website. In addition, the CSC football program canceled its July 6-8 summer team camp session on Monday, but the program remains committed to the second and third sessions as well as its two prospect camps. The first session of football camp was canceled with limited participation in view, however the remaining two sessions are booked for around 400 campers each. Registration remains open for both the 11-man football team camp, scheduled for July 12-14, as well as the six, eight, and nine-man camp July 16-18. Chadron came back from a 4-2 deficit late with five runs to outlast the Scottsbluff Prep Freshman 7-6.

A sacrifice fly made it 4-3 Scottsbluff in the sixth when Shane Frye added another run to tie it with a single.&nbsp; Scottsbluff scored the go-ahead run on a passed ball in the seventh and took a 6-4 lead on Jaxson Orozco's single.

Chadron got started quickly in the seventh with runners on base via a hit-by-pitch and three consecutive walks that included a run coming across on a passed ball to make it 6-5.&nbsp; Ryan Vahrenkamp singled in the tying run and Chadron won it in the next at-bat when Broc Berry scored on another passed ball.

The win evened Chadron's season record at 5-5.

Scottsbluff launched out to an 8-2 lead after two innings Sunday in a rout over Laramie.

After the first three batters reached on hit-by-pitches and a single in the second Hunter McCollum singled home the first of seven runs in the frame. Creighton Dike doubled home a pair for a 6-1 lead and Jace Heimerman doubled home two more to make it 8-1 Zephyrs.

Jerod Balthazor, KJ Hartline and Andon Pittman each had three Zephyr RBIs.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Tate Carson pitched four of five innings and held Laramie to four runs on eight hits.

Laramie won the second game of the day by the exact same score, 14-4.&nbsp; Laramie scored two in the first and broke open a 4-0 game with three more in the fourth to go up 7-0 before finishing it off with five runs in the fifth after Scottsbluff had cut the lead to 9-4.

Laramie out-hit Scottsbluff 12-5 and the Z's defense committed five errors.&nbsp; Only three of Laramie's first nine runs were earned off Z's starter Creighton Dike.

Derrick Squires went 2/4 with four RBIs for Laramie.&nbsp; Caleb Eaton was 3/4 with a pair of RBIs. Eaton allowed only five hits over 5 2/3 innings on the mound and struck out five Scottsbluff hitters.&nbsp; He walked eight.

Scottsbluff is 2-6 this summer and hosts Gering tonight at Cleveland Field with 7:30 the set time for first pitch.

Buckley (Chappell) 4, Gering SRs 0

Buckley held Gering to two hits in a shutout Sunday.

Xander Speicher worked around five walks and struck out seven on the mound for the Bombers to earn the win in a six-inning start.&nbsp; Gering's second inning started promising with back-to-back singles but Speicher struck out the next two hitters and forced a ground out with the bases loaded to end the threat.&nbsp; Gering wouldn't get a hit the rest of the game.

The Bombers opened up a scoreless game with three runs in the fourth inning.&nbsp; Two singles began the frame followed by a one-out double from Corbin Murphy that scored two.&nbsp; Logan Kerr singled home Murphy and that's all Buckley would need to win.

Buckley won the second game of the doubleheader on a walkoff error in the bottom of the seventh, 8-7.&nbsp; Dillon Harshman's grounder to third was mishandled allowing Davon Wolf to score the winning run and cap a three-run comeback after trailing 7-5 with three outs to play.

It was a close game throughout - Buckley led 3-0 after one before Gering tied it 3-3 in the third.&nbsp; Both teams added a run in the fifth before Gering took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth on Riley Hoke's two run home run.

Gering falls to 3-5 and Buckley is now 11-1 this summer.

Alliance opened play falling to the host team Gillette 8-0 and dropped a 4-1 decision to the Colorado Ducks on Thursday.&nbsp; &nbsp;The Spartans bounced back to defeat Gallatin Valley 4-2 on Friday to finish pool play 1-2.&nbsp; Saturday, the teams then moved into the bracketed tournament format. &nbsp;What started out as a defensive game and
scoreless tie through four innings quickly took off between Gering and
Casper.&nbsp; Gering started the frame with
five runs, Casper answered with seven, and all of the sudden it was 7-5 Casper
heading into the back end of the contest.

Gering still had some electricity in the
bats – Jarred Beamon cranked a two-run homer in the seventh to tie it at seven,
and Riley Schanamen launched a two-run homer later in the inning to give Gering
a 9-7 lead and they would go on to win 9-8.

Ducks pitcher Urbano Marquez threw a complete game victory and held Alliance to only five hits.&nbsp; Marquez struck out five and didn't walk a batter, throwing a very efficient 73 pitches in his seven innings.

Mario Garcia had the most success for the Alliance lineup with a pair of hits, but Alliance couldn't get anything other than singles off Marquez.

Collin Schrawyer pitched into the fourth inning as the Alliance starter and yielded three runs with three strikeouts.&nbsp; Trevor DuBray struck out four in his 2 1/3 innings.

Gillette was consistent throughout the first four innings, adding runs each frame to build the lead and no-hitting Alliance Thursday.

Hayden Sylte pitched the complete game, a Perfect Game, not allowing any hits, walks, hit batters or errors defensively.&nbsp; He struck out five Spartans and didn't walk a batter.&nbsp; It took just 53 pitches to get the job done.

Gillette took the early lead 2-0 after one, added another in the second, and two more in the third before a three-run fourth inning put the game well out of reach.

Six runs in the sixth inning turned a scoreless tie&nbsp; into a rout Thursday.&nbsp; Imperial went up 6-0, which was plenty of run support by limiting Ogallala to just three hits in the game.

Scoreless in the top of the fourth inning, Alliance took the lead on a passed ball and immediately added another run on a sacrifice fly to go up 2-0.&nbsp; Leading 2-1, Alliance plated another run on a passed ball in the seventh inning and retired Gering in order in the bottom half to win its sixth game of the summer.

Chase King nearly pitched a complete game allowing just five Gering hits, striking out five and not walking a batter.&nbsp; Trevor DuBray threw five pitches and struck out the final batter to close the deal.

Gering's Riley Schanaman tossed all seven innings and gave up just three hits and one earned run.&nbsp; He struck out seven.

Alliance improves to 6-3. Gering falls to 2-3 overall.

Alliance handed the Gering JRs their second straight loss with a hot start and then squeaked out the finish.

Leading 1-0, Eli Blanco knocked a two-run single to put Alliance up 3-0 in the top of the first. Blanco finished the game with three RBIs.

Later with Alliance up 7-1 in the sixth Gering made a furious rally, scoring four times.&nbsp; A walk and back-to-back doubles cut two runs off the Alliance lead making it 7-3.&nbsp; Following a strikeout, Tanner Gartner singled in a run and Keenan Allen doubled him home but was thrown out trying to advance to third.&nbsp; Trailing 7-5, a ground out ended the threat and Gering dropped to 1-4 this summer.

Sheridan County hosted Chadron and used a strong sixth inning to close out the Nationals.&nbsp; Leading 3-2 going into the bottom of the frame Jace Freeseman led off with a triple and came around to score on a wild pitch.&nbsp; Following an error and walk the Regulators added runs on a ground out and a fielder's choice to lead 6-2.&nbsp; Traiton Starr singled in the seventh run of the game and Chadron could only climb one closer with a run in the top half.

The Regulators are 5-2 and have won five straight since dropping the first two games of the summer to Chadron.

Sidney started the game with runs in each of the first three innings then put the game away late with a four-spot in the sixth to win over Bridgeport 9-1.

Sawyer Dickman and Sam Hashman each had two RBIs for Sidney.&nbsp; Tommy Ellwanger started on the mound and went 3 1/3 innings with five strikeouts and allowed just one hit and a run.

Kohlton Kriha started for Bridgeport and threw all six innings, allowing nine hits, nine runs (five earned) and struck out five.

Twelve runs and 12 hits were plenty for the Sidney JRs in their win over Bridgeport 12-2 Wednesday.

Sidney plated seven in the first inning and built an 11-0 lead after two innings. The big blow came from Luke Kasten with a two-run double to make it 4-0 in the first.&nbsp; Sidney added runs on five singles in the first two frames.

Ty Stettner, Kurtis Gadway and Nolan Hoffrock combined to limit Bridgeport to just four hits, and the Bombers struck out six times.

Kasten led the Sidney hitting attack with a 3/3 day, the aforementioned double, triple and two RBIs.&nbsp; He came within a homerun of the cycle.&nbsp; Ben Hashman drove in two runs on two hits.

Buckley (Chappell) SRs 8, USA Prime Colorado Springs 2

Buckley took the first game of a doubleheader limiting USA Prime Colorado Springs to just four hits.

Bombers pitcher Dillon Harshman threw the first five innings and struck out seven.&nbsp; Springs could only muster up three hits before Blake Mosenteen came in to close it out over the final two innings, working through three walks while allowing just one hit.

Harshman excelled at the plate with a perfect 3/3 day and two RBIs. Sam Uyemura drove in two runs with two hits and both players doubled.

Buckley (Chappell) SRs 8, USA Prime Colorado Springs 6

The third inning provided big excitement in game two where Buckley busted through to erase a big deficit and go on to sweep the double-dip.

USA Prime jumped out to a 4-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third. Following a walk and fielder's choice, Prime came through with back-to-back RBI singles then added a run on an error at third base.

Then it was Buckley's turn. Sam Uyemura tripled in a runner who reached on a hit-by-pitch to start the inning.&nbsp; Stunningly, a second hit-batter came around to touch home plate on another triple right afterwards - this time off the bat of Blake Mosenteen to tie the game 4-4.&nbsp; Buckley took the lead on JT Pollart's double 5-4, added their sixth run on a passed ball, and never trailed again.

Tied 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh Buckley scored the go-ahead run on a ground out and went on to win 8-6.

Davon Wolf and Mosenteen each had two RBIs for the Bombers who are now 8-1 this summer.

(AP) All-Star outfielder Charlie Blackmon of the Colorado Rockies has become the first Major League Baseball player known to have tested positive for the coronavirus. 

A person familiar with Blackmon’s situation confirmed the test result to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because there was no official announcement. 

The Denver Post first reported Blackmon’s condition on Tuesday. Blackmon is a four-time All-Star. He turns 34 on July 1, the day players are set to begin reporting for the resumption of spring training. Several teams have said they have players who tested positive for the virus without identifying any of them.

NASCAR went to Talladega Superspeedway on heightened alert after Bubba Wallace, its only Black driver, took on an active role in a push for racial equality.

Wallace had successfully called for the ban of the Confederate flag and received threats. Fans paraded past the main entrance of the Alabama track displaying the flag, and a plane circled above the speedway pulling a Confederate flag banner that read “Defund NASCAR.”

So NASCAR moved quickly when one of Wallace’s crew members discovered a rope that resembled a noose in their garage stall. The sanctioning body called in federal authorities, who ruled Tuesday it had been hanging there since at least last October and was not a hate crime.

U.S. Attorney Jay Town and FBI Special Agent in Charge Johnnie Sharp Jr. said the investigation determined “nobody could have known Mr. Wallace would be assigned” to that same stall. NASCAR said it was the lone garage stall with a pull down rope that resembled a noose.

NASCAR has defended its reaction and insisted it would call the FBI again. A defiant Wallace said there is no confusion and the rope had been fashioned into a noose.

“I wanted to make sure this wasn’t just a knot,” Wallace said on CNN. “It was a noose. Whether it was tied in 2019 ... it is a noose.”

Wallace never saw the rope. He said NASCAR President Steve Phelps came to see him Sunday night at the track with “tears running down his face.”

“The evidence he brought to me was that a hate crime has been committed, quote-on-quote,” said Wallace, who instantly began to fear for the safety of his family.

Even after the conclusion it was not a hate crime, Wallace remained angry at what he perceives as constant tests of his character. He holds no ill-will toward NASCAR.

“I stand behind Steve and I stand behind NASCAR,” he said. “NASCAR was worried about Talladega. We had that one circled on the radar with everything going on.”

NASCAR opened the Talladega gates to 5,000 fans, its highest number so far during the coronavirus pandemic.

Since finding his voice over the last month, the 26-year-old Mobile, Alabama native has embraced an international role in NASCAR’s attempt to push past its rocky racial history. Wallace has worn an “I Can’t Breathe” shirt, raced with a Black Lives Matter paint scheme in Virginia and successfully lobbied for the Confederate flag ban.

NASCAR has assigned security to Wallace at the track and has been protective of the driver. The first word of the incident came in a sharply worded statement in which NASCAR said it was “angry and outraged” over the “heinous act” that the series directly linked to racism.

The FBI sent 15 agents to Talladega for Monday’s rescheduled race at the same time the industry rallied around Wallace. In an unprecedented show of solidarity, every team member on pit road lined up behind him during the national anthem.

Phelps has taken exactly nine questions about the finding in Wallace’s garage and none provided any details of the incident. Because of health protocol restrictions, a limited number of personnel have access to the garage. Only a handful of Wallace’s crew members and NASCAR saw the rope.

Roughly 48 hours after the discovery, federal authorities said video confirmed the rope “was in that garage as early as October 2019” hanging from a garage door. The rope was referred to as a noose, but can be used as a handle when closing the door.

Phelps continued to call it a noose after authorities said no charges would be filed, and held firm in that NASCAR is investigating why the rope was tied that way. He was pleased it wasn’t a hate crime directed at Wallace, but insisted NASCAR would have conducted its investigation the same way even now knowing it was just a coincidence.

“We would have done the same investigation. It was important for us to do,” he said.

“The evidence was very clear that the noose that was in the garage was in there previously. The last race we had in October, that noose was present. The evidence we had, it was clear we needed to look into this.”

He took no questions on the FBI’s findings.

Meanwhile, Wood Brothers Racing team said it cooperated with the investigation and an employee recalled “seeing a tied handle in the garage pull down rope from last fall,” when the team had the stall.

Rope found hanging in Wallace’s garage was coincidence

A person with knowledge of the situation says All-Star forward Nikola Jokic of the Denver Nuggets has tested positive for the coronavirus and is quarantining in his native Serbia. 

The person talked to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because neither the player nor the team acknowledged the positive test publicly. 

Jokic is expected to be back in Denver long before the team leaves for the Disney complex for the restart of the NBA season next month. ESPN and The Denver Post previously reported Jokic's positive test result.

Chadron scored 13 times in the second inning to break a 4-4 tie and win in a run-shortened 2 1/2 inning contest.&nbsp; The Junior Nats drew double the amount of walks to hits (14-7) in the win and cruised behind Broc Berry on the mound.&nbsp; He pitched three frames striking out three.&nbsp; The Junior Nats picked up their second win to improve to 2-4 this summer.

This one showed why it's never over until the final out is recorded.&nbsp; 

Gering leapt out to a 7-0 lead before Sidney got to the plate using a combination of walks and five singles, but it wouldn't last as Sidney answered with one run in the first, then exploded for nine in the second inning to take a 10-7 lead.&nbsp; Following a walk and a single to start the inning, an error led to Sidney's first run followed by a pair of extra base RBI hits. Sidney would add on five more in the fifth to win big. 

Sawyer Dickman led Sidney with four RBIs.&nbsp; Jacob Dowse walked and scored three times each.&nbsp; Keenan Allen had a 2/4 night with three RBIs for Gering.

Jack Franklin dazzled the Sidney batting line-up for a complete game 8-0 win.&nbsp; Franklin allowed just two hits and struck out 11.&nbsp; He also put together a perfect night at the plate going 3/3 with an RBI.&nbsp; The win improves Gering's record to 2-2.

Alliance JRs 8, Rapid City Post 22 7

Alliance roared back in the eighth inning then held off Rapid's rally to win a thriller Tuesday afternoon.

Post 22 methodically built a 5-2 lead going into the bottom of the eighth.&nbsp; The first ten men Alliance sent to the plate reached as the Spartans chipped away at the lead, but a pair of runners were thrown out trying to advance during the inning that kept it the game close, 8-5 Alliance heading into the ninth.&nbsp; Post 22 scored two times but left the tying run on third base with a strikeout to end the game.

Brantz Halouska and Mario Garcia each had three hits and drove in three runs combined for Alliance.

Cheyenne Post 6 SRs 17, Scottsbluff 7

Cheyenne opened up a 5-2 lead early, and built it to 14-6 by the end of the third in the win over Scottsbluff.

Hunter McCollum started for the Zephyrs and went 2 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs (all earned) on four hits.&nbsp; Creighton Dike took over and pitched a little more than an inning, giving up eight runs before being relieved.

Dike drove in three runs offensively and had a pair of hits.&nbsp; KJ Hartline drove in two Z's runs.

Sheridan County JRs 8, Ainsworth 4

Sheridan County upped its record to 4-2 with a doubleheader sweep of Ainsworth Tuesday afternoon.

With one out in the second inning and a following a hit batter, the Regulators drew four straight walks and scored on two passed balls for a 4-2 lead.&nbsp; They added three more runs to go up 8-2 and never look back.

Both teams amassed just two hits each in the game and took advantage of pitching control issues to score runs.

The second inning was also very kind to the Regulators in game two, plating seven runs and taking a 7-2 lead that was tested later on.

After building a 10-2 lead into the fourth, Ainsworth showed some fight with a five-spot to make it 10-7.&nbsp; Despite getting just one base hit in the contest Ainsworth used struggles by the Sheridan County defense to stay in it.&nbsp; Only 2 of Ainsworth's runs were earned, and both teams committed four errors.

Tegan Snyder, Keenan Schwarting and Tucker Schott all had two Regulator hits.&nbsp; Schwarting struck out six hitters in his start on the mound and didn't give up a hit.

Rocky jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings Monday but the Spartans rallied back and made it a close contest.&nbsp; Five consecutive singles and a sac-bunt RBI in the fourth got Alliance within 6-4, and Joel Baker's RBI ground out in the sixth made it a one-run deficit at 7-6.&nbsp; The Spartans left the tying run on base in the final inning.

Chance Crowe started on the hill and threw two innings, giving up six earned runs and five hits.&nbsp; Kirk Sanders came on in relief and calmed the Rocky Mountain bats, giving up just four hits in five frames and striking out four while walking four.

After giving up seven hits into the fourth inning, Rocky turned to its bullpen and limited the Spartans to just three hits in the final 3 2/3 to squelch the comeback.

Vic Hinojosa's two-run homer pushed Alliance past Rocky Mountain Monday, 4-3.&nbsp; Rocky had taken a 3-2 lead the inning prior and Hinojosa's homer was the last of the scoring for the day and the Alliance bullpen of Chase King and Trevor DuBray did a great job of working out of fifth and sixth inning jams to maintain the margin, leaving two Rocky runners on base each frame.

Alliance took the championship game of Sunday's Clair Conley Tournament and finished 4-0 in the event.&nbsp; 

Trailing 3-0 in the third inning, Alliance exploded for five runs and never looked back.&nbsp; Following a single sandwiched by a pair of walks the Spartans started tallying runs with an RBI groundout, two-run single from Trevor DuBray and two-run double by Vic Hinojosa.&nbsp; The Spartans added two more in the fifth and held off Buckley's sixth inning, two-out rally despite giving up a two-run homer.

Collin Schrawyer pitched five innings for the victory, giving up four hits and three runs.&nbsp; DuBray finished off the win with two innings of work and four strikeouts.

The Nationals opened up strong and kept the foot on the gas throughout in a win over Bridgeport at the Alliance Clair Conley Tournament.

Tyler Johson led with three RBIs. Cade Goings and Trey Thorson each drove in a pair.Bronson Freeseman pitched part of the first inning and issued five walks before being relieved by Logan Darringer who threw 2 2/3 with five K's.
