Alliance, Neb. - Eagle Media, Panhandle Post and KCOW Radio are excited to welcome Canon Rath as the new “Voice” of the Alliance Bulldogs. Rath currently serves as a News Director for Eagle Media and works throughout the Nebraska Markets for North Platte Post, Sandhills Post and Panhandle Post. He will maintain his current position with this new expanded role.

Last season, Rath called games for our sister market, Sandhills Post, calling local area games of the week on Flatrock 100.7. His duties included doing play-by-play for football and basketball.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“We are thrilled to have Canon expand his role at Eagle, becoming an integral part of our team in Alliance and Chadron,” said Olivia Hasenauer, Nebraska Regional Manager. “With his extensive experience in play-by-play coverage and his deep knowledge of the teams and players in Western Nebraska, Canon is the perfect fit. His grandpa, has&nbsp;ties in the Bayard area&nbsp;further enhance this seamless transition.”&nbsp;

Rath has over eight years of sports broadcasting experience and six years of radio broadcasting. Throughout his career, he has called games at the high school and collegiate level. Canon also had a once in a lifetime opportunity to call the 2020 Class D2 Football State Championship between Dundy County Stratton and Burwell for Nebraska Public Media (formerly known as NET).&nbsp;

Rath graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in May 2023 as a dual major in Sports Communication and Sports Management. During his 5-year tenure as a Loper, he was heavily involved with the student run radio station 91.1 KLPR, where he hosted a weekly sport show, hosted a weekly sports update and did play-by-play/color for Loper Athletics. 

He spent four years on the KLPR Sports Staff and was Sports Director for his last three years of college. He has been nominated many times at the national level for his work for Loper Athletic broadcast, his weekly sports update “Loper Update” and the longest student running show “Throwin Lopes” where he created it with fellow student Grant Tighe in 2020.&nbsp;

Rath got his start in broadcasting when he was a Junior at Kearney High School when he joined the Bearcat Sports Network, which is Kearney High School’s Striv program. Canon got his start in radio his freshman year in college when he joined Platte River Radio as a board op and producer. He would regularly produce the Doug and Daddy Show, studio engineering many sporting events, and more. Rath also hosted the "Rutts and Rivals Scoreboard Show" for two years. After a 2-year stint, Canon would join KRGI as a color analyst announcer for the St. Paul Wildcats football team.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Rath just recently celebrated one year with Eagle Media earlier this month. He has done work for Panhandle Post along with Sandhills Post and North Platte Post. During his free time, Rath enjoys playing golf with his grandpa, going on walks, playing pickleball and playing video games. LOS ANGELES (AP) — Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman homered in the first inning, Gavin Stone had another strong outing and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Colorado Rockies 4-0 on Sunday.

Though much of the focus is on Yoshinobu Yamamoto's rookie season and Clayton Kershaw's comeback, Stone is putting together a solid season for the Dodgers' staff.

The rookie right-hander tossed five innings Sunday and won for the fifth time in his last seven starts.

“Usual command of the fastball. I leaned heavily on the slider today. It felt good out of my hand. I felt like they were a fastball-hitting team, so it felt good," said Stone, who struck out six while giving up only four hits and two walks.

Stone (6-2) has allowed one run or fewer in six of his seven starts since April 26. During that span, he is 5-1 and has a 1.64 ERA.

“It's been under the radar, but not lost on us his value,” manager Dave Roberts said. "Consistency and certainty is what you are getting from him now. To his credit, he is watching what his teammates are doing and then applying things fit for his arsenal."

Michael Grove, Alex Vesia and Daniel Hudson came out of the bullpen to combine for the Dodgers’ sixth shutout this season and second in five games.

Betts got things started with his fourth leadoff homer this season. Two batters later, Freeman went deep off Colorado's Austin Gomber, the eighth time the Dodgers have homered at least twice in an inning.

Freeman also scored twice and drove in two runs for the Dodgers, who have won five of six.

“I was good. We needed it," Roberts said of the early homers. “Mookie was relieved to hit it out of the ball park. Freddie has been in it for a while and for him to go deep was good for him, too.”

Gomber (1-3) came into the game sixth in the NL with a 2.76 ERA and allowed only two earned runs in four May starts. But the left-hander went a season-low three innings, and was at 75 pitches when his day ended.

Gomber allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts.

“Today was a day he was not locked in on his command," Rockies manager Bud Black said.

Betts connected on a slider from Gomber and put it four rows deep into the stands in the left-field corner. It was also Betts' 52nd career leadoff homer, which is one away from tying Craig Biggio for fourth all-time.

Betts has nine homers this season, but it was his first since May 17.

After Shohei Ohtani's pop out, Freeman drove a full-count fastball over the wall in center and just past the outstretched glove of leaping Colorado outfielder Brenton Doyle.

Miguel Rojas extended Los Angeles' lead to 3-0 in the third when his base hit drove in Freeman.

Freeman then gave the Dodgers more breathing room in the eighth inning with a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to bring home Jason Heyward.

Colorado was shut out for the seventh time. Its lone threat came in the fifth inning when it had runners on second and third with two outs, but Ezequiel Tover lined out to Freeman at first base to end the inning.

“Stone had a tight, little slider. We just couldn’t muster anything against their pitching staff. Five runs in three games aren’t going to cut it," Black said.

Dodgers: 3B Max Muncy (right oblique strain) doesn't have a timetable to resume baseball activities after he felt discomfort in his rib cage while swinging the bat last week.

Rockies: Return home for a three-game set against Cincinnati. RHP Ryan Feltner (1-4, 5.46 ERA) gets the call in Monday's series opener.

Dodgers: Head back east for six games, beginning with three in Pittsburgh. RHP Tyler Glasnow (6-3, 3.04 ERA) takes the mound on Tuesday.

Freeman & Betts blasts in 1st take care of Rockies early Sunday

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — Jac Caglianone hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the bottom of the second inning and Florida led the rest of the way as the Gators beat Nebraska 17-11 Sunday in an elimination game at the Stillwater Regional.

The Gators, who beat Nebraska (40-22) in the first round to knock the Cornhuskers into the loser's bracket, play Oklahoma State in the finals. Florida would have to beat the Cowboys twice in order to win the regional championship.

Caglianone finished 2 for 4 with a double, a home run, four RBIs and four runs. Colby Shelton went 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs for Florida (30-28).

The game was delayed nearly 2 hours by inclement weather with two outs and a man on second in the top of the fifth inning and Florida leading 7-4.

Caglianone hit an RBI double in Florida's four-run sixth inning and Shelton hit a three-run homer before Luke Heyman and Dale Thomas added solo shots in a six-run seventh to give the Gators a 17-6 lead.

Gabe Swansen hit a two-run home run in the top of the first and Joshua Overbeek added a two-run shot in the second to give Nebraska a 4-2 lead.

Season Over: Huskers hammered 17-11 ending NCAA Regionals in Stillwater

The Chadron American Legion Post 12 Seniors baseball team won both of its games during the first day of the Wood Bat Tournament on Saturday at Maurice Horse Field on North Main Street.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Seniors initially defeated Martin, S.D., 8-0 as Chadron pitcher Creighton Ryan gave up just two hits and struck out nine while hurling all six innings.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Chadron got nine hits, including two each by Ryan and Alex Fisher.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The second game against Valentine had a dramatic ending.&nbsp; The score was tied at 7-7 in the bottom of the sixth when Edwin Fills Pipe hit a 3-run, walk-off homer over the centerfield fence for a 10-7 victory.&nbsp;

Chadron Seniors take two Saturday in wood bat tournament

Stillwater, Ok - Gabe Swansen homered twice for the Huskers, as they kept their season alive with a 7-5 victory over Niagara on Saturday afternoon at O’ Brate Stadium.

Nebraska (40-21) totaled seven runs on eight hits with two errors, while Niagara (38-17) scored five runs on seven hits and an error.

The Huskers reached the 40-win mark for the first time since 2014 and the 19th time in program history.

Swansen finished 2-for-5 with a pair of home runs and now has an extra-base hit in seven of Nebraska’s eight postseason games. It marked NU’s first multi-homer game in a regional since Jake Opitz against Eastern Illinois in the 2008 Lincoln Regional.&nbsp;

Case Sanderson drove in a team-high four runs for the Huskers including a three-run homer in the third inning. Joshua Overbeek reached twice in the leadoff spot, while Tyler Stone and Rhett Stokes each added doubles. Dylan Carey also recorded two knocks and was hit by a pitch.&nbsp;

Mason McConnaughey improved to 9-3 this season with six innings of work for Nebraska, allowing five earned runs on five hits with 10 strikeouts and only one walk.

It marked his second straight double-digit strikeout performance and his 10 punchouts were the most by an NU pitcher in a regional since Matt Waldron (11) in the 2019 Stillwater Regional. Over his last four starts, McConaughey has punched out 36 batters while issuing just eight walks.

Additionally, Sears (101) and McConnaughey (91) became the first Husker pitching duo since at least 1985 to record 90-plus strikeouts in a single season. They are also the first NU duo with nine-or-more wins in a season since Tony Watson (10) and Johnny Dorn (9) in 2006.

Niagara jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after a hit batter, single and three-run home run from Eric Rataczak put the Purple Eagles in front. They added another run in the second inning after a double and a pair of flyouts put the Huskers in a four-run hole.

After going quietly in the first two frames, Carey began the third with a single up the middle and advanced to second on Riley Silva’s 17th sacrifice bunt of the season. Overbeek walked on four pitches to give the Huskers their runners on first and second with one out.&nbsp;

Sanderson then sent an 0-1 pitch into the left-field bleachers to trim the Niagara lead to 4-3. The ball traveled 379 feet and marked the freshman’s third long ball of the season for the Big Red.

Nebraska threatened again in the fourth inning, as Stokes doubled after a 105-mph line drive ricocheted off the pitcher and into the outfield. He stole third base but was cut down at the plate on a slow roller to the third baseman to keep the deficit at one.

On the mound, McConnaughey held steady as he struck out five of six batters faced across the third and fourth innings to give him eight punchouts on the afternoon.

The Huskers captured their first lead of the afternoon in the fifth inning, as Overbeek tripled to lead off the inning and was driven in on Sanderson’s RBI sacrifice fly. Swansen put NU in front with a 382-foot blast to left field for his second homer in as many days.

Niagara responded with a solo home run on the first pitch in the bottom of the fifth to knot the game at five.&nbsp;

Stone began the sixth frame with a double, before an errant throw by Niagara’s pitcher on Stokes’ bunt attempt gave the Huskers a 6-5 advantage. The Huskers managed to load the bases on a hit batter and intentional walk, but a strikeout ended the inning with NU ahead by just one.

McConnaughey recorded his 10th strikeout after a two-out single to end the sixth, before Swansen homered for the second time to left-center field in the seventh to put Nebraska in front 7-5. Worthley entered in the bottom of the seventh and retired the side in order on just eight pitches.

Nebraska threatened once again in the eighth, as Carey led off with a single and moved to second on Silva’s 18th sacrifice bunt, the most in Division I. However, a strikeout and flyout kept the Huskers off the board to end the inning.

Husker homer keeps post-season hopes alive

Nebraska dropped its opening game of the Stillwater Regional against Florida 5-2 on Friday afternoon at O’ Brate Stadium.

Nebraska (39-21) scored two runs on eight hits, while Florida (29-27) tallied five runs on 14 hits.

Gabe Swansen went 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI, his fifth multi-hit effort in his last seven starts. Ben Columbus reached in three of his four plate appearances with a single and two walks, while Rhett Stokes added a two-hit game. Case Sanderson, Josh Caron and Dylan Carey each recorded knocks for the Huskers.

Brett Sears was dealt his first loss of the season after lasting five innings and surrendering three earned runs on 10 hits. The right-hander punched out four batters and walked just one, giving him 101 strikeouts on the season, which is the ninth-most in a season in program history.

Drew Christo tossed four innings of relief behind Sears, allowing two earned runs on four hits with a quartet of strikeouts. Across his last five appearances, the junior has posted a 2.50 ERA allowing just five runs across 18 innings.

Florida took an early 1-0 advantage on a leadoff home run to left-center field off the bat of Cade Kurland. The Gators pieced together a pair of singles to put runners on first and second, but Sears coaxed a double play to escape the jam.

Despite an early deficit, the Huskers responded with a run of their own after Sanderson’s one-out single and Columbus’ walk. Swansen continued to swing a hot bat, as he laced an RBI double into the left-center gap to score Sanderson and even the game at one.

Both teams went scoreless in the second inning, as Sears worked around a leadoff double and hit batter with a pair of punchouts to finish the frame unscathed.

Jac Caglianone began the third with a double, but Sears then recorded his 100th strikeout of the season and forced a popup for two quick outs. The Westphalia, Iowa, native became one of nine Huskers in program history to post 100-or-more strikeouts in a single season, and the first since Johnny Dorn (102) in 2008.

However, two straight two-out hits capped off by a two-run double from Ashton Wilson put Florida back in front 3-1 in the third inning.

Nebraska managed walks in the third and fifth frames but were unable to capitalize on either, as the Gators maintained a two-run lead after five complete innings.

Christo entered out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and was greeted by a leadoff double, Florida’s fifth of the afternoon. The junior bounced back with two lineouts and a flyout, sandwiched by a Caglianone intentional walk, to strand a pair of Gators on the basepaths.

The NCAA baseball tournament doesn't carry the same national intrigue, luster and lore of March Madness, but it's another 64-team field that will begin creating lasting memories when Regional action begins Friday.

Personally, the Road to Omaha is something I always enjoy watching.&nbsp; Clicking around all over the traditional ESPN channels and now everywhere on ESPN+ from the opening rounds through Super Regionals, and every few years culminating with a road trip to the College World Series in Omaha.

Lincoln, Neb. - Director of Athletics Troy Dannen announced Wednesday that Nebraska has signed four-time national champion Head Volleyball Coach John Cook to a new five-year contract.

The recently completed deal runs through Jan. 31, 2029, with Cook receiving an annual salary of $825,000 beginning on June 1. The new salary represents a $75,000 annual increase. Additionally, Cook will receive a retention bonus of $70,000 on July 1, 2024.

“We are fortunate to have John Cook leading our volleyball program,” Dannen said. “He is the most accomplished coach in the nation, and one of the top coaches in the history of American volleyball. John's expectations are for nothing less than excellence in each and every endeavor, and his record reflects that.

“His influence within the department, and the leadership he brings across our 24-sport program benefits Cornhusker athletics well beyond just the sport of volleyball. John's vision has been to establish Nebraska as a national leader in advancing and promoting the sport of volleyball, and this extension certainly represents the successful outcome of that vision.”

In addition to the annual salary, Cook is eligible to receive bonuses if his program meets certain levels of athletic achievement, and the contract also includes a deferred compensation agreement.

"I am very grateful to Troy and our administration for their support and confidence in our Husker volleyball program," Cook said. "When Troy and I talked about my contract, I proposed that instead of an annual escalating salary that some coaches do, it would mean a great deal to me if the Nebraska Athletic Department would consider supporting me in purchasing a horse out in central Nebraska that I've had my eye on. The horse, called No. 415, was born and bred at the famous Pitzer Ranch in Ericson and is a once-in-a-lifetime performance horse. He was purchased as a weanling by Mark Wray and then trained by the Wray family. Troy loved the idea and while they couldn't specifically write that into the contract, the retention bonus will be used for No. 415. I am honored that Troy was supportive of my idea and it means a lot to me. We are all looking forward to what should be an exciting 2024 season."

Since taking over the program in 2000, Cook has guided the Huskers to four NCAA Championships, 11 NCAA Semifinals appearances, nine Big 12 titles and four Big Ten titles. His teams have compiled a 689-100 record, owning the nation’s top winning percentage during his tenure. Cook is a three-time AVCA National Coach of the Year (2000, 2005, 2023) and three-time Big Ten Coach of the Year (2016, 2017, 2023). In 2017, Cook was inducted into the AVCA Hall of Fame.

In 2023, Cook coached a team with no seniors to the NCAA Final and a 33-2 final record. The Huskers won the Big Ten Championship, and Cook was named AVCA National Coach of the Year and Big Ten Coach of the Year. Cook did more for the growth of the sport of volleyball in 2023 than possibly any other year in his career. He embraced the challenge of having his Husker team play a volleyball match outdoors in a football stadium, which was an overwhelming success story as 92,003 packed Memorial Stadium for Volleyball Day in Nebraska on Aug. 30. Nebraska Announces New Contract for John Cook

The Chadron Seniors (0-5) are still looking for that elusive first win of the American Legion Baseball season, but they're getting closer after a 10-6 defeat to Gering Tuesday night.

Caden Buskirk launched a a home run and Logan Slama tripled but it was not enough to overcome Gering, which scored three times in the seventh inning to open up a 7-5 game into a 10-5 lead before Chadron's threat in the final half was halted.

Broc Berry threw six innings for Post 12 on the mound and allowed seven Chadron hits. Just six of Gering's runs were earned, and Berry struck out seven.

Chadron's junior squad beat Gering 8-0 and improve to 4-2 in the early summer.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Both Chadron teams are in action tonight (Wednesday) at Bridgeport.

Nebraska (39-20) has been selected as the No. 2 seed for the NCAA Regional in Stillwater, Okla., and will play third-seeded Florida (28-27) on Friday, May 31 at 2 p.m. (CT) on ESPN+.

Oklahoma State (40-17) is the tournament’s No. 11 overall seed and will play No. 4 seed Niagara (38-15).

Friday will be the second meeting between Nebraska and Florida. The Gators were the No. 9 seed in last week’s SEC Baseball Tournament, falling to eighth-seeded Vanderbilt in the opening round.

⚾ Two-seed Huskers to face Florida in NCAA Regionals

(AP) The Washington Commanders said Monday they were made aware of a lawsuit filed in civil court last week against kicker Brandon McManus, and the Jacksonville Jaguars acknowledged they are also being sued.

A Commanders spokesperson said the team is looking into the situation and has spoken with McManus’ agent and the NFL office, adding, “We take allegations of this nature very seriously.”

ESPN reported two women are suing McManus for sexually assaulting them during a charter flight to London last year when he was playing for the Jaguars, who said they are aware of the complaint and the significance of the claims being made.

“As we continue to look into the matter, it bears emphasizing that we insist on an organization built by people who represent our community and game with the highest character and class,” the Jaguars said in a statement.

Citing court documents that have not yet been posted on Duval County’s public records database, ESPN reports the women, identified as Jane Doe I and Jane Doe II, are accusing McManus of rubbing and grinding against them during the flight and the Jaguars of failing to supervise him and create a safe environment for staff serving the team. They are seeking more than $1 million and asking for a jury trial, according to ESPN.

McManus’ lawyer called them “absolutely fictitious and demonstrably false allegations."

“We intend to aggressively defend Brandon’s rights and integrity and clear his name by showing what these claims truly are — an extortion attempt,” Brett R. Gallaway of McLaughlin &amp; Stern said in a statement sent to The Associated Press.

McManus, who turns 33 in July, signed with Washington in March. The Philadelphia native has been in the league for a decade, the first nine seasons with the Denver Broncos, after playing at Temple.

Former Bronco accused of sexual assault in civil lawsuit

DENVER (AP) — Charlie Blackmon homered to cap a six-run fourth inning and the Colorado Rockies ended Cleveland’s nine-game winning streak with an 8-6 victory over the Guardians on Monday.

Blackmon drove in four runs and made a sliding catch in foul territory for Colorado, which is 11-6 since an 8-28 start.

The fourth-inning rally ended Cleveland’s longest winning streak since it won an AL record 22 straight from Aug. 24 to Sept. 14, 2017.

José Ramírez continued his strong start to the season with two doubles and drove and increased his major league RBI lead to 54 with two driven in. He had a chance for more but struck out with a runner on in the ninth after Andrés Giménez drove in Tyler Freeman.

Freeman two doubles among his three hits.

“We’ve got our two best hitters up to be the tying runs, even in our first loss,” manager Stephen Vogt said. “It was a really fun nine-day stretch and we hope to start another one tomorrow.”

The Rockies own the second worst record in the NL but are 6-1 against Texas, Philadelphia and Cleveland over the last two weeks. They used a big fourth against starter Xzavion Curry (0-1) to turn a three-run deficit into a 7-4 lead and end the Guardians’ streak.

A bases-loaded error brought in the first run, Elehuris Montero knocked in two more with a single and Blackmon’s second homer of the season just cleared the scoreboard in right to cap the six-run inning.

“I thought I hit it kind of low, but this is the first time we’ve played in summertime weather, so that might have helped a little,” Blackmon said.

It was Rogers’ first major league game since June 2, 2022, with Washington.

“That’s the player of the game,” Blackmon said. “He came in and threw strikes, was super effective. That’s what we needed.”

Rockies playing good baseball, beat AL's second-best team to open series

DENVER (AP) — Ryan McMahon hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the first inning, and the Colorado Rockies sent Ranger Suárez to his first loss of the season in a 5-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Colorado, last in the NL West at 18-34, took two of three games and ended a streak of 15 straight winning or tied series for the major league-best Phillies (38-16), Philadelphia’s longest streak since 1983-84.

“We can play good baseball if we play baseball the right way,” Rockies starter Cal Quantrill said. “I think that these last two or three weeks, we’ve done a better job of that. We’ll try and build on that and continue to be a thorn in the rest of the league’s side.”

Suárez (9-1) allowed season highs of five runs and four walks in six innings, while giving up four earned runs and three hits with eight strikeouts. His ERA rose from 1.36 to 1.75.

“It felt like the guys were doing a really good job of being short, staying off the stuff down below the zone,” McMahon said of Suárez. “It’s tough. He makes it look so good, like it’s going to stay in the zone and then it just dashes out of the way. He got us a couple of times, but I feel like we did it well enough in the first two innings and it worked out for us.”

Quantrill (4-3) gave up two runs and three hits in six innings.

“I want them to feel like we’re winning a baseball game when I start,” Quantrill said. “I think we’re improving. It’s starting to feel that way. Gone on good streaks a few times in my career, but here, I think part of it is creating that belief that, hey, I don’t care who’s on the other side. We can win this game.”

Tyler Kinley pitched a perfect ninth for his second save of the season, finishing a five-hitter.

McMahon’s team-leading 10th home run of the season put the Rockies ahead, and Colorado boosted the lead to 5-0 in the second. Hunter Goodman hit an RBI double, Brendan Rodgers hit into a run-scoring forceout as third baseman Alec Bohm threw wildly past first for an error in trying for an inning-ending double play as a second run scored.

“The first two innings, I didn’t have command of my changeup or my curveball,” Suárez said through an interpreter. “My fastball wasn’t going for strikes, either. I think that was the game right there. When I finally was able to adjust, which I did, we were already five down.”

Bohm had an RBI single in the fourth and Johan Rojas hit a run-scoring single in the fifth.

J.T. Realmuto singled in the eighth and extended his hitting streak to 15 games, the longest for a Phillies catcher since Tim McCarver hit in 15 straight in 1977.

Rockies: Placed OF Jordan Beck (broken left hand) on the 10-day IL and recalled OF Sean Bouchard from Triple-A Albuquerque. Beck was hurt while making a diving catch Saturday night.
