Hyannis Area Schools announce hiring of Varsity Volleyball Coach

Alliance High School Activities Director Anita James,&nbsp; will be stepping down from her position at the end of the school year, but won't be moving very far.&nbsp; &nbsp;The Alliance Public Schools Board of Education officially approved Ms. James changing positions from Activities Director to High School Assistant Principal beginning in the 2023-24 school year.&nbsp;

Anita is a native of Lexington, Ne and has been with the Alliance Public School system for the past 15 years.&nbsp; She began as a Physical Education teacher and Coach at Alliance Middle School, eventually taking over as Middle School AD after 6 years, while continuing to teach and coach.&nbsp; &nbsp;In 2017, she became the High School Activities Director and doing some Assistant Principal duties as well.&nbsp; Anita will take over for Tera Digman, who resigned,&nbsp; to take a Principal position at Hay Springs Schools.

In an email to Panhandle Post,&nbsp; Anita stated..."I have had the pleasure of working with some amazing teachers, coaches, students, and community members here in Alliance and look forward to continuing to do that in my new role!&nbsp; Some of the memories I have while being the activities director will last me a lifetime, so will the relationships I've built with the people and students I have worked with. I couldn't have done my job without the support of our coaches, administrators, and others.&nbsp; I'm thankful for the opportunity to serve as the Activities director these past 6 years. It has taught me a lot and I've got to see our students and our coaches do some pretty amazing things, and I'm excited to continue to be an Alliance Bulldog and see that success of our students, but will just be in a different role!"

The APS Board also approved the hiring of former Alliance High School Teacher and Coach Michael Baker, to take over as Activities Director next school year.&nbsp; Baker was a teacher and coach in Alliance for 22 years, serving as boys head basketball coach two different times,&nbsp; before leaving at the end of last year to take a position as head boys basketball coach at the new Lincoln Northwest High school.&nbsp; Baker is a native of Harrison, Ne and has coached at Atwood, Ks and Wheeler Central schools before coming to Alliance in 2000.&nbsp; He lead Alliance to 3 State Tournament appearances as Boys Basketball Coach.

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- April 10, 2023 --&nbsp;Chadron State College football starts their final week of spring practice today, as they prepare for their spring game, which is scheduled for Friday, April 14, at 6 p.m. The Eagles return eight offensive and nine defensive starters from last years squad that finished 3-8. Three quarterbacks who received valuable playing time last season are competing for the starting spot this spring. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/heath-beemiller/8322">Heath Beemiller</a>, a junior from Chandler, Arizona, played the most out of the group with eight appearances. Beemiller, the 2022 season opening starter, completed 53 percent of his passes for 1112 yards with six touchdowns and 11 interceptions on the season. Once the Arizona native suffered an injury,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/mason-hamilton/4585">Mason Hamilton</a>&nbsp;took over quarterback duties. The sophomore from Gillette, Wyoming had a completion percentage of 56.34 percent with three touchdowns and one interception. Hamilton threw for 356 yards before suffering a season ending injury. With Beemiller unable to return,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/preston-pearson/8268">Preston Pearson</a>&nbsp;earned the following three starts for the Eagles. Pearson, a redshirt freshman from Kearney, Nebraska, had 676 yards with a 69.14 completion percentage on the season. He finished with six touchdowns and four interceptions. With the departure of&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/jalen-starks/4621">Jalen Starks</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/dorian-collier/8219">Dorian Collier</a>&nbsp;is the most experience returnee in the running back room. "Up front I think as a total group they've done a really good job this spring," Smith said. &nbsp; Defensively, an All-American in Hunter O'Conner returns at the defensive end position. Chadron State football spring game set for Friday night

DENVER (AP) — Germán Márquez tried to work through the tightness he was feeling in the middle of his right forearm.

After all, the Colorado Rockies starter was pitching, in his words, “super good." Catcher Elias Díaz, though, convinced him to call it a night. Take the cautious route.

Márquez pitched five strong innings before exiting, Alan Trejo tied a career-high with three hits and the Rockies beat the St. Louis Cardinals 7-4 on Monday.

“I think I’ll be all right, be OK,” Márquez said. “Just tightness.”

The 28-year-old Márquez (2-1) was warming up for the sixth inning when Díaz saw a look on Márquez's face that brought him to the mound.

“I say, ‘Is something wrong here?’” Díaz said. “I was like, ‘Let’s just stop here.’”

After a visit from the trainer and manager Bud Black, Márquez exited to a cheer from the crowd after an outing in which he allowed two runs and struck out four.

The hard-throwing righty now has 979 career strikeouts, which is six away from tying Jorge De La Rosa’s mark for most K’s in Rockies history.

“I was commanding everything good,” said Márquez, who wasn't sure if he would miss a start. “I felt it and I had to be worried about it.”

In 2019, Márquez was shut down in August due to pain in his elbow. He said this was nothing like that.

Colorado got production from the bottom of its lineup with young shortstop Ezequiel Tovar producing a pair of doubles while Trejo added three singles and two RBIs.

“The guys at the bottom want to pull their weight, too," Black said. “Good stuff.”

It was another quick one with the game lasting 2 hours, 14 minutes. Colorado has yet to have a game go longer than three hours.

Steven Matz (0-2) struggled for a second straight start, allowing six runs and nine hits over 5 2/3 innings. He surrendered four runs over 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Braves last week.

Jordan Walker&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Cardinals/status/1645613054665674753">singled in the seventh to extend</a>&nbsp;his hitting streak to 10 games. It’s the longest by a rookie to start their career in Cardinals history.

“I haven’t thought about it,” Walker said of the mark. “A little frustrating day. ... As long as I keep putting the ball in play, things will work out. That’s kind of my mindset right now.”

Nolan Arenado's nine-game hitting streak was halted as he returned to Coors Field. He dazzled with his glove, though, starting a pair of double plays for the Cardinals. Arenado earned eight Gold Gloves over his eight seasons (2013-20) with the Rockies.

Cardinals: OF Lars Nootbaar (bruised left thumb) took between 40 and 50 swings in the batting cage Monday. “Pretty happy with how it went,” Nootbaar said. “I just talked to some of the trainers and we’re marking it down as a positive day.”

Rockies: Closer Daniel Bard turned in another solid bullpen session. Bard’s on the injured list due to anxiety. “He’s doing well, doing great,” Black said. “No timetable.” ... OF Randal Grichuk (bilateral sports hernia) is slated to play in an extended spring training game Tuesday.

Arenado said it's beginning to feel more and more like just another game when he returns to Coors Field. That’s because only a few players are left on the roster from his days in Colorado.

He was traded to the Cardinals before the 2021 season — along with cash — for Austin Gomber, Elehuris Montero and prospects.

Rockies open week with win over Cardinals

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- April 8, 2023 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College softball team had a number of "firsts" Saturday during their 4-0 series win over the Adams Stats Grizzlies, in Chadron. Chadron State won both games, defeating the visitors 7-0 in game one and 10-0 in five innings in game two. Since CSC shutout the Grizzlies in both games yesterday, it is the first series in school history that Chadron State softball shutout their opponent. The scoring in game one started in the bottom of the third inning for CSC when&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/j-lyssa-martinez/8866">J'lyssa Martinez</a>, a sophomore from Denver, Colorado, hit a line drive down the left field line. The Grizzlies outfielder attempted a diving catch but the ball missed her glove and rolled back to the fence. Martinez used her speed to round the bases and hit the first inside the park homerun ever at CSC's softball field. More history occurred in the following half inning for the CSC defense. After two consecutive doubles and runners on second and third bases, Sydney Muniz hit a line drive to right center for the Grizzlies. Martinez once again used her speed and made a diving catch on the ball. Both Adams State runners left their bases before the catch was made and never tagged up. The center fielder rose to her feet and threw the ball to&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/brady-laucomer/8881">Brady Laucomer</a>&nbsp;at second base. Laucomer proceeded to throw the ball to&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-zimmerman/8876">Lauren Zimmerman</a>&nbsp;at third base, resulting in a triple play for Chadron State. It was the first triple play by CSC in their program's history. Martinez would continue her heroics in the bottom of the fourth inning. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/addison-spears/8873">Addison Spears</a>&nbsp;opened the inning with a leadoff single. With&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/jaelyn-martinez-lewis/8883">Jaelyn Martinez-Lewis</a>&nbsp;pinch running for Spears,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/chloe-brown/8857">Chloe Brown</a>&nbsp;singled and advanced her into scoring position. The next batter would be&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/j-lyssa-martinez/8866">J'lyssa Martinez</a>. Since CSC shutout the Grizzlies in both games yesterday, it is the first series in school history that Chadron State softball shutout their opponent. Martinez used her speed to round the bases and hit the first inside the park homerun ever at CSC's softball field. More history occurred in the following half inning for the CSC defense. After two consecutive doubles and runners on second and third bases, Sydney Muniz hit a line drive to right center for the Grizzlies. DENVER (AP) — Denver native Kyle Freeland began the show and fellow Mile High City product Pierce Johnson wrapped it up.

From start to finish, the pitchers who grew up going to games at Coors Field shined.

Freeland pitched&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/Rockies/status/1644103880530354177">four-hit ball over 6 2/3 innings,</a>&nbsp;Johnson threw a perfect ninth and the Colorado Rockies won their home opener 1-0 over the Washington Nationals on Thursday.

"That was so cool,” said Johnson, who earned his second save. “Being able to do it in a place where I used to come and watch games growing up, and all my family and friends were here, I can’t even put it into words.”

Kris Bryant drove in the only run with a single in the fifth. It was the 12th 1-0 game in Denver — the 11th at Coors Field — and first since July 4, 2018, when Colorado beat San Francisco.

This was a quick game at Coors Field, too, taking 2 hours, 18 minutes. Last season’s home opener lasted 3:09.

Freeland (2-0) struck out five and walked two before turning things over to the bullpen. He tipped his cap to the capacity crowd on the way off the field.

“I wanted to let the state of Colorado know I love them,” Freeland said. “It’s great seeing everyone out there and supporting us, behind us with everything.”

The game was moving at such a brisk pace that Johnson had to hustle to make sure he was warmed up. He's filling in as the closer for Daniel Bard, who went on the injured list with anxiety issues.

“Freeland truly did an amazing job today,” Johnson said. “He kept them on their toes and got a lot of quick outs.”

Jurickson Profar put on a fielding exhibition in left field, beginning with his first-inning leaping grab at the wall. What added to the difficulty was fending off a fan’s glove that was reaching over for a souvenir.

He was far from done. He made a diving catch in the second and a long, running catch in the fifth.

“All of them,” Profar cracked. “Being able to help Kyle and the team get the ‘W’ on defense feels good.”

Profar is still getting to know his surroundings after signing with Colorado on March 21. He is so new to Coors Field that he asked a clubhouse attendant before the game to point him to the batting cages.

It was an efficient bounce-back performance from Nationals starter Josiah Gray (0-2), who allowed one run over six innings against Colorado. In his first start, Gray surrendered five runs over five innings in a loss to Atlanta.

“With every good start, you just have that much more confidence going out for the next one,” Gray said. “Now I even have more confidence.”

The sun played a role in the Rockies' only run. Right fielder Lane Thomas lost the ball in the glare, which resulted in a double by Ezequiel Tovar. Bryant brought him in with a liner to left.

“I saw it the whole time until it just got on me,” said Thomas, whose team dropped its fourth straight game. “I kind of hesitated a little bit. I told (Gray), ‘I’m sorry.’”

Nationals: OF Corey Dickerson (left calf strain) has started some light hitting in the cage. “He’s feeling better each and every day, which is a good sign,” manager Dave Martinez said. ... Andy&nbsp;Birkel, Lincoln Southeast (2004):&nbsp;Birkel&nbsp;was undefeated in the 100, 200 and 400 meters as a senior, winning the all-class gold medal in each. He also was a standout on Southeast’s state championship football team. He started his prep career at Lincoln East, where he set a school record with a 90-yard interception return. In college, he earned all-conference honors in football playing at Northern Colorado.

Nicole&nbsp;Brungardt, Norfolk Catholic (2008):&nbsp;She set Norfolk Catholic records in volleyball (kills) and basketball (points scored), and&nbsp;won seven Class B gold medals at the state track meet. In college, she started four years for the Wayne State volleyball team and was a two-time track All-American.

Ted Butler, Lincoln Southeast (1994):&nbsp;He won back-to-back state heavyweight wrestling championships as a junior and&nbsp;senior, andwas a standout center and defensive lineman in football. On the baseball diamond, he led the Knights in home runs and doubles. In college, he was a two-year starter at center for Boise State.

Matt&nbsp;Herian, Pierce (2002):&nbsp;A three-year all-state selection as a tight end,&nbsp;Herian&nbsp;also earned all-state honors in basketball, scoring more than 1,000 points, and was a state qualifier in track. At Nebraska,&nbsp;Herian&nbsp;became the Huskers’ all-time leader in receptions and receiving yards for a tight end.

Lukas&nbsp;Hulett, Bellevue East (2006):&nbsp;A track specialist,&nbsp;Hulett&nbsp;ran the fastest 400 in Nebraska high school history while winning the 200 and 400 at the state track meet.&nbsp;At&nbsp;Nebraska, he was a four-time All-American and earned 18 Big 12 meet medals.

Chris&nbsp;Kelsay, Auburn (1998):&nbsp;He earned all-state honors in football and&nbsp;basketball, and&nbsp;won state meet medals in the shot put for Auburn. Dennis Korinek, Ulysses (1951):&nbsp;A six-man football phenom, Korinek still holds the state’s six-man career scoring record with 821 points, an effort that includes 118 rushing touchdowns. He led Ulysses to the six-man state championship with a win in the 1949 Apple Bowl. He won two events at the state track meet and tied the state record in the shot put before going on to the University of Nebraska, where he lettered three times in football and once in baseball.

Preston Love Jr., Omaha Tech (1960):&nbsp;All-state in football and basketball and a state champion in the high hurdles, Love was considered the best football player in the state his senior year. He attended Northwestern on a football and track scholarship, placing third in the Big 10 indoor hurdles, before transferring to Nebraska, where he lettered in football and track.

Ogallala grabs two spots in 2023 sports hall of fame class 

A Panhandle Club Volleyball team has qualified to compete in the Junior National Tournament.&nbsp; The Monument Elite Volleyball Club will travel to Orlando, Flordia in June for the National AAU tournament.

The Monument Elite VBC is based out of Scottsbluff and is made up of players from throughout Western Nebraska. Tryouts were held and January and 11 players were selected. The team finished first in 3 of the 4 tournaments they entered.&nbsp;

Team Members include....Olivia Krejci, Ryli Poss, Adriana Canales, Avah Garrett, Jaxie John, Kendal Reich, Lillian Hays, Makynna Boettcher, Mia Bowles, Mikaylee Campbell and Morgan Morlock. Coaches are Binny Canales and Wittni Boettcher.&nbsp;

&nbsp; The Chadron State College football team will have five home contests and six away games during the 2023 season, Head Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jay-long/503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;announced today. The Eagles open the season on the road against Quincy University in Quincy, Illinois, on Thursday, August 31. &nbsp; The Hawks finished last season 4-7 overall and 1-5 in conference play. It will be the first meeting ever between the two schools. The following week, CSC will have their home opener on September 9 against the first of three South Dakota schools on the schedule. The Northern Sun Conference's Augustana University will travel to Chadron for a noon kickoff. Chadron State is the first non-conference game for the Vikings since 2011. Upper Iowa left the Northern Sun conference, allowing members to schedule a non-conference game. Conference play starts for CSC in Spearfish, South Dakota as Black Hills State plays hosts to the Eagles. The game is scheduled for a 6 p.m. kickoff, the second night game for CSC. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. central time (5 pm MT) at Quincy. Western Colorado visits Chadron on September 23 for a noon kickoff. Chadron State will be looking to end a three-game skid against the Mountaineers in the conference matchup. Last seasons national runner-up, Colorado School of Mines, has their homecoming scheduled against Chadron State on September 30. Chadron State's homecoming is the following week at 1 p.m., when they play host to Fort Lewis. CSC defeated the Skyhawks last season, 56-3. Adams State plays hosts to the Eagles on October 14. Chadron State has won eight of the last ten meetings between the two teams. The two losses were by a combined four points with both games being held in Alamosa. Family Day is scheduled for October 21 in Chadron against CSU-Pueblo. The Thunderwolves qualified for the NCAA DII playoffs last season but were defeated in the first round by Colorado School of Mines. Back to back road trips are on the schedule the following two weeks for the Eagles. New Mexico Highlands plays hosts to CSC on October 28 before the Eagles play Colorado Mesa in Grand Junction, Colorado, on November 4. Both teams visited Chadron last season. CSC defeated NMHU 17-3 but fell to the Mavericks 37-38 in overtime. The regular season finale and senior day is scheduled for November 11 against South Dakota Mines. Since the Hardrockers joined the RMAC, Chadron State leads the series 7-1 with the lone defeat occurring last season. Chadron State returns eight offensive starters and nine defensive starts from last years squad that finished 3-8 overall and 3-6 in conference play.&nbsp;&nbsp;

⚾ 2023 Major League Baseball season predictions

The Alliance Boys Basketball Team wraped up the season and honored their six Seniors at a team dinner Tuesday night.&nbsp; 

First year Head Coach Dalton Holst thanked the Players, Parents and School Administrators for thier support and guidance through the year.&nbsp; Coach Holst also thanked JV Coach Kelly Dickerson and Freshman Coach Mason Hiemstra for their help. The Bulldogs finished 9-13 this season, but improved and competed in every game. Coach Holst talked about the team being unselfish and very coachable, despite adjusting to a new coach and different line-up combinations.&nbsp; &nbsp;Coach also praised the team for playing solid defense against a schedule that included 6 teams that qualified for State Tournaments.&nbsp; He gave special thanks to the six Senior players.....Taytom Timbers, Kysen Walker, Kaeden Adams, Tyzen Brown, Nic Waldron and Tristin Grubham.

Coach Holst also presented these team awards, which were voted on by the players.

Making TikTok videos for fun evolved into a serious moneymaking venture for Nebraska track athlete Jess Gardner, who is among the many social media stars in college sports.

A comical video of her teaching a football player how to pole vault has been viewed nearly 4 million times, though the majority of her self-described “girly girl” content features her lip-syncing or performing skits while dressed in her track uniform, sweat clothes or stylish outfits. Pretty common stuff for social media influencers.

The number of Gardner's TikTok followers has climbed to nearly 210,000 over the past four months — in addition to her 115,000 on Instagram — and with that has come something else: Gardner has become mindful of staying safe because of the possibility of an overzealous fan becoming menacing; she said eight of every 10 of her followers are male.

As has been the case with other female athletes who are monetizing their social media followings, it's typical for her looks to be the subject of comments on her videos, comments that can range from genuinely complimentary to inappropriate — or worse.

“As a woman, thinking in the future, if I had a son and they were commenting those kinds of things on a young girl’s video, I would be ashamed of my son,” Gardner said. "Not all the comments are like that. Don’t get me wrong. There are a lot of very nice people who follow me, a lot of very nice comments.

“But some of the ones that are more alarming, like I just think, what is going on in your life? I can’t take it personal," she said. "I have to understand their perception of me is a reflection of their experiences and their life and that type of stuff. What happened or what’s going on that you see a video of me in a winter coat and that’s where your mind is going?”

LSU gymnast Olivia Dunne, who has 11 million TikTok and Instagram followers, was in the headlines earlier this year when a swarm of boys and young men showed up at a meet in Utah. They&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/samanthapeszek/status/1611929895839453184?s=20">at one point formed a gauntlet</a>&nbsp;outside the arena. Dunne later asked her fans to show respect for her and her teammates, and the incident prompted LSU to assign security personnel to travel with the team.

John Muffler of Florida-based Aequitas Global Security said athletes who have experienced sudden popularity as influencers must understand they are at risk of attracting followers with nefarious intentions. Muffler, a retired U.S. Marshals Service chief inspector, specializes in risk mitigation and threat assessment and has written about problems influencers can encounter.

As with all influencers, Muffler said, college athletes with rising public profiles need to be aware of their surroundings and never post anything that would offer a clue about their location.

Muffler discourages sending direct messages to followers the influencer does not know and urges caution in general replies to comments. Something as innocent as a smiley face emoji could trigger what's known as a parasocial relationship, meaning the follower imagines he or she knows or is friends with the influencer.

“Most people are going to be fine and normal about following you,” Muffler said, “but it can be perceived as an invitation to others — and those are the ones you need to worry about. They’re the ones that show up in your lab class or outside your dorm.”

Hanna Cavinder, who along with sister and fellow Miami basketball player Haley are among&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/march-madness-cavinder-twins-miami-0752da493e58c2ebca3eae494915e8b3">the top college athlete influencers by any measure,</a>&nbsp;said she lives a more private life than most would assume given the twins' prolific and lucrative use of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/thecavindertwins/?hl=en">social media.</a>

“People will always question, ‘Well, why don’t you post your teammates more on TikTok? Or why aren’t you posting your sisters more or your family and stuff?’” she added. “And this is why — I don’t want them to deal with stuff that we’ve had to learn and grow and adapt to, like hate comments and stuff like that. That took a while to get used to, people just talking down on you for no reason.”

Gardner said she started making TikToks last year with her roommate and they were surprised at how many views they generated. With college athletes now able to cash in on their celebrity, Gardner began looking for ways to monetize them and now partners with about 15 brands, most of them catering to women.

Her potential annual earnings from the effort are projected to be $111,000, which ranks No. 3 among Division I female track athletes, according to On3.com.

Gardner said she has received handwritten letters signed by men — one contained jokers from a deck of cards — and thrown them away. She had heard about the Dunne situation in Utah but didn't give it much thought until a teammate told her a group of males was looking for her during an indoor meet in Lincoln.

“That kind of stuff ... is definitely scary,” she said during an interview in Nebraska's indoor track facility. “As you can see in this building, we’re a little less separated than the basketball or football or volleyball team would be at a game. The stands are right there. That was definitely unsettling.”

Gardner said she spoke with her coaches and people in the athletic department who said they were aware of her large social media following and assured her security measures were in place to keep her safe.

University spokeswoman Leslie Reed said campus police have not seen an increase in athlete security concerns directly attributable to social media prominence.

“We have always had high-profile athletes on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus and we address issues as they arise,” Reed said in a statement.

&nbsp; After ending a 22-game losing streak Thursday, the Chadron State College softball team split their doubleheader with Colorado Mesa on Friday, giving the Eagles a 3-1 series victory over the Mavericks. CSC improves to 11-20 overall and 9-15 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play on the season. CMU is now 20-11 and 18-5 in the RMAC. The Mavericks lone victory of the series came in game one Friday, where they defeated Chadron State 5-2. Scoring started in the top of the fourth for Colorado Mesa after Rylee Crouch hit her third homerun of the series. Crouch, who now leads the NCAA in homeruns, hit one in each of the four games. A&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/lauren-zimmerman/8876">Lauren Zimmerman</a>&nbsp;single in the bottom of the inning scored&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/jaelyn-martinez-lewis/8883">Jaelyn Martinez-Lewis</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/j-lyssa-martinez/8866">J'lyssa Martinez</a>, giving CSC a 2-1 lead. Western Conference All Conference Selections for Winter 2022-23

Laramie County (Wyo.) Community College

GILLETTE, Wyo. — The Laramie County Community College rodeo team hit 
the ground running on the men's side in their first competition of the 
spring, erupting for 680 team points on their way to their first team 
title of the 2022-23 season. The win is also the first win for the 
Golden Eagle men since Head Rodeo Coach Seth Glause has been involved 
with the program.

"Everything fell our way and we really capitalized on Sunday which is
 always good and helps on the team points some," Glause praised. "I was 
proud of our students. They all competed well and competed with a 
purpose and did a really great job."

The effort was led by senior <a href="https://golccc.com/sports/rodeo/2022-23/bios/girard_bernard_oh5d">Bernard Girard</a>&nbsp;— of Alliance — who took home the All-Around title along with a championship in Tie-Down roping.

Girard was also able to garner a third-place finish in Steer 
Wrestling on the way to tallying 255 points for the Golden Eagles team 
effort. He said the team has been using a variety of ways to get ready 
for the opening rodeo and it kept them all on their toes.

"The last three weeks, everyone has been getting ready to go," he 
said. "We had a steer wrestling jackpot Thursday night before we left to
 go to Gillette and got everybody in the zone to go. I went to a jackpot
 the weekend before and just having that good of a start was awesome and
 made me want to keep the ball rolling."

Girard was joined by a pair of other Golden Eagles who took home titles in their first goes of the spring.

Freshman <a href="https://golccc.com/sports/rodeo/2022-23/bios/tattrie_dixon_ij70">Dixon Tattrie</a>
 brought home the top spot in bull riding for his third rodeo win of the
 year going back to the fall and he continues to lead the Central Rocky 
Mountain Region (CRMR) standings with 360 points.

"I've started to ride really good this spring at practice and I feel 
more confident in what I was doing and how I was riding," Tattrie said 
about getting a good lead. "You try not to watch the standings as much 
as you can. The more you watch it the more pressure you put on yourself.
 If you take an eye off it and just go and ride bulls every weekend, 
it's a lot easier to do that than say 'I have to ride this bull so I 
stay here in the standings.'"

Tattrie also added a runner up in the first go of Saddle Bronc riding
 and finished fifth in the average to bring 80 more points for the team 
total there.

Fellow freshman <a href="https://golccc.com/sports/rodeo/2022-23/bios/pokorny_dane_zmt2">Dane Pokorny</a>&nbsp;of Thedford was another standout for LCCC, bringing home a tie for the title in 
Steer Wrestling after winning the first go with a time of 4.4 and adding
 a 4.7 in the short go to bring 140 more points to the team tally.

"We've got nine guys that can win any weekend (in steer wrestling) 
and they back into the box and they know they have an opportunity. We 
just missed having seven guys (in the short go)," Glause said. "I think 
they were 11th, 12th, and 14th so they bulldogged very well."

The win also moved Pokorny into a tie for second in the CRMR with 
Girard and putting both into position to qualify for the College 
National Finals Rodeo in June.

Other quality performances for the Golden Eagles included <a href="https://golccc.com/sports/rodeo/2022-23/bios/derner_chance_x0qt">Chance Derner</a> taking the top spot in the first go in Tie-Down, although the South Dakota junior failed to record a time on his second head.

Freshman Bull Rider Griffin Koester picked up a round win on his 
second ride with a score of 67 to add to his CRMR total and move into 
second place behind Tattrie.

"Dixon is in a good spot, he kind of separated himself from the field
 this weekend," Glause said. "They both just need to continue to ride 
with confidence and continue to give themselves opportunities to win and
 they both have the opportunity to go to Casper."

The Golden Eagles packed in a few more individuals in Steer Wrestling with freshman <a href="https://golccc.com/sports/rodeo/2022-23/bios/ravenscroft_tucker_26c5">Tucker Ravenscroft</a>&nbsp;oif Nenzel and senior <a href="https://golccc.com/sports/rodeo/2022-23/bios/pokorny_cauy_zssw">Cauy Pokorny</a>&nbsp;of Thedford both making the short go, and both put down times to finish fifth and sixth respectively in the average.

On the women's side, it wasn't a flashy rodeo for Laramie County. The
 team only had one make it to the short go in Wheatland freshman <a href="https://golccc.com/sports/rodeo/2022-23/bios/grant_rayne_fgpk">Rayne Grant</a>
 who picked up a sixth-place tie in the first go in breakaway and was 
able to make the top ten in barrels. Unfortunately, her rides in the 
short go were not enough to bring any points in to the team.&nbsp;

The Golden Eagle men remained in third place in the team standings, 
but picked up almost 300 points on region leading University of Wyoming 
and 465 points on second place Casper College. The team now sits just 
275 points out of second place with four rodeos' remaining.

"We need to keep the pressure on and continue to perform at a high 
level so that we have a opportunity come Laramie to go and compete in 
Casper as a team," Glause said.

The LCCC women remain in third place also, trailing the University of
 Wyoming by 580 points for the second spot in the team standings while 
Gillette College continues to dominate the region with wins in four of 
the six rodeos' so far.&nbsp;
