&nbsp; COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- May 2, 2023 --&nbsp;After having the first perfect weekend at the plate in CSC softball history,&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/sloane-quijas/8868">Sloane Quijas</a>&nbsp;has been named the RMAC Week 13 Softball Player of the Week. Quijas, a senior from Erie, Colorado, went a perfect 12 for 12 at the plate in CSC's 3-1 series victory over CSU-Pueblo last weekend. The senior had 12 hits in 12 at bats, while scoring seven runs and adding five RBIs. With a slugging percentage of 1.167, Quijas hit two doubles and drew three walks over the weekend. Quijas had three hits in each of the four games. In the series opener, she hit a two RBI double and an RBI single, helping the Eagles earn a 13-1 victory. In the series third game, a single to center field by Quijas added her two other RBIs. Quijas joins two other CSC softball players to receive the honor from the RMAC.&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/mackenzi-kroll/8865">Mackenzi Kroll</a>&nbsp;was the week 10 Player of the Week, while&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/sports/softball/roster/delaney-farnsworth/8879">Delaney Farnsworth</a>&nbsp;was the week 5 Pitcher of the Week. 🥎 CSC senior Sloane Quijas' perfect series honored by RMAC

DENVER (AP) — Elías Díaz homered and drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning single, and the Colorado Rockies beat the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Rookie shortstop Ezequiel Tovar hit his first major league home run for Colorado, which has won its last two home games after dropping seven straight at Coors Field.

“I wasn’t going up there trying to do that but luckily I got my first one,” Tovar said through a translator.

C.J. Cron led off the eighth with a double off Peter Strzelecki (2-1), and Díaz singled to bring home pinch-runner Yonathan Daza.

Justin Lawrence (1-1) worked a scoreless eighth and Pierce Johnson handled the ninth for his fourth save.

Rowdy Tellez, Brice Turang and Jesse Winker had two hits each for the Brewers.

Brewers starter Freddy Peralta returned to the place where he struck out 13 batters in his 2018 major league debut. He allowed Tovar’s homer in the third that put Colorado ahead 1-0.

“Warming up before the game I was thinking about that day, my debut,” Peralta said. “Great memories for me, great experience to pitch here.”

Díaz led off the fourth with a 453-foot blast to the concourse over left field, but Peralta worked out of a jam when right-fielder Tyrone Taylor threw out Randal Grichuk trying to score on Tovar’s flyout.

“When you face the type of pitcher like Peralta and you win, you have to celebrate,” Díaz said. “He’s good, but we were better tonight.”

“I think that I that I threw the ball well. I just made two or three mistakes and I paid for them,” Peralta said.

The Brewers tied it in the sixth off Ryan Feltner, who allowed two runs in 5 1/3 innings. Christian Yelich led off with a double and later scored on a fielder’s choice. Tellez doubled and Willy Adames scored on William Contreras’ groundout.

Feltner benefited from some strong defense, especially from Tovar, who made a spinning throw to get Brian Anderson at first in the fourth inning.

Tovar also helped turn three double plays and jumped to snare Tellez’s line drive leading off the ninth.

“Defense like that brings a lot of confidence to the whole team,” Feltner said.

Brewers: Taylor was activated from the 10-day injured list. Taylor missed the first month of the season with right elbow sprain. ... RHP Gus Varland was sent to Triple-A Nashville on a rehab assignment. He was placed on the injured list with a hand issue on April 16, a day after he was hit by a Manny Machado line drive.

Rockies: Right-hander Germán Márquez said he will have Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of the season.

Winker became the second Brewers player to strike out on a pitch-clock violation. In the third, Winker was looking down before a 3-2 pitch when the clock hit 7 seconds. Plate umpire Edwin Jimenez rung him up for strike three.

Winker had a few words for Jimenez as he walked away from the plate and was given a warning after he descended into the dugout. The Brewers didn’t think the clock was started properly.

“That was our argument,” manager Craig Counsell said.

Tellez was the first Milwaukee player to violate the pitch clock, on April 10 at Arizona.

The Brewers will send Eric Lauer (3-2, 5.19 ERA) to the mound against Kyle Freeland (2-3, 4.32) in a matchup of lefties on Wednesday night.

We got our first look at the Alliance Peltz Company Spartans Baseball teams on Sunday. The Spartans held a team meet and greet along with an open scrimmage at Bower/Shankland Field.&nbsp; 

The Teams showed off their new uniforms, with the name of the new corporate sponsor...Peltz Companies of Alliance. The Spartans will field three teams this summer,&nbsp; a Junior and Senior American Legion Team and a Prep team. Each team will play their own schedule vs area and regional teams.&nbsp; The Junior and Prep Teams will host a seasoning opening tournament May 19-21 at Bower Shankland Field and the Senior Team will host the Annual Clair Conley Memorial Tournament June 21-25. Alliance will also host the Nebraska Class B Junior State Tournament July 15-19.

The Coaches for this years teams are Carlos Palomo, Senior Head Coach. Adrian Gonzalez, Junior Head Coach. JJ Garza, Prep Head Coach.&nbsp; With Assistant Coaches ...Jerry Garza,&nbsp; Derek Morrison, Mason Hiemstra and Peyton Pinedo.

Three days of spectacular competition on Chadron State College’s spectacular new track and field ended late Sunday after the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference had staged its annual springtime extravaganza in Nebraska for the first time. More than 500 athletes from 13 colleges and universities participated.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While the Eagles were without several of their standouts because of injuries much of the season, almost without exception Coach Seth Mischke’s athletes who had qualified for the championships had their best marks during the weekend and were competitive.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Seven Chadron State individuals and three relay teams earned points Sunday.&nbsp; In the men’s competition, Creighton Trembly was the silver medalist in the 110 hurdles for the second year in a row and Logan Peila was fourth in the 400 hurdles.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In addition, Hector Ortega tied for third in the high jump by clearing 6-foot, 6 ¾ inches and the CSC men finished fifth in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Logan Moravec also placed in the 800 meters.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The Eagles’ Shane Collins helped open the meet by winning the men’s hammer throw for the second year in a row.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In the women’s action Sunday, Kyla Sawvell used her last throw in the shot put to move into third place, meaning that she had become a medalist in each of the throws.&nbsp; She won the gold in the hammer throw on Friday, took the silver in the discus on Saturday and claimed the bronze in the shot.&nbsp; Now a 12-time RMAC champion, she posted her best mark of the season in each of her events during the conference meet.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The CSC women also finished fourth in the 4x100 relay and freshman Megan Baloun placed in the triple jump Sunday. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;The CSC men finished seventh with 49.5 points and the women were ninth with 37 in the team standings.&nbsp; The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs won both of the team titles for the fourth consecutive year.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Four double winners shared the Men’s Athlete of the Meet honors.&nbsp; Justice Mendoza of UCCS sped to victory in the 100- and 200-meter dashes, Reece Sharman-Newell of CSU-Pueblo won both the 800 and 1500 races, Everett Delate of Colorado Mines swept the hurdles and Ismael Debele of Western Colorado took both the long and triple jumps.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The women’s outstanding athlete award went to Audrey Bloomquist of Colorado-Colorado Springs after she won both the long and triple jumps and was the runner-up in the 100 meters.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Three RMAC Championships women’s records were broken—two of them more than once.&nbsp;

The first four finishers in the 800 meters all crossed the finish line under the old mark 2:09.08, but the record now belongs to Helen Braybrook CSU-Pueblo, whose winning time was 2:06.34.

The former 5000-meter record was 17:03.86, but both Katie Doucette of Western Colorado and Zoe Baker of Colorado Mines finished the race about 34 seconds faster than that and less than a second apart. Doucette’s new record is 16:28.45.&nbsp;

The third new standard was set by the Colorado Mines 4x400 relay team whose winning time was 3:44.62. That’s 1.53 seconds faster than the old record, which was set by the Orediggers last year.&nbsp; Amena Olson and Aryelle Wright were members of both quartets.

More than 500 athletes from 13 colleges and universities participated.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; While the Eagles were without several of their standouts because of injuries much of the season, almost without exception Coach Seth Mischke’s athletes who had qualified for the championships had their best marks during the weekend and were competitive.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Seven Chadron State individuals and three relay teams earned points Sunday.&nbsp; In the men’s competition, Creighton Trembly was the silver medalist in the 110 hurdles for the second year in a row and Logan Peila was fourth in the 400 hurdles.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; In addition, Hector Ortega tied for third in the high jump by clearing 6-foot, 6 ¾ inches and the CSC men finished fifth in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays. Recap: RMAC Outdoor T&F Championships held in Chadron

DENVER (AP) — C.J. Cron had three hits, including a three-run homer, Austin Gomber gave up one run over six innings and the Colorado Rockies beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 12-4 on Sunday to snap a seven-game home losing streak.

With the win, the last-place Rockies avoided both their third sweep of the young season and tying the worst 29-game start in franchise history. The 12 runs were the most this season for Colorado, which came into the day with the fifth fewest runs in the majors.

“That’s what we need from (Cron) and others,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “It’s going to take our big boys. That’s why they’re big boys.”

Cron’s team-leading sixth home run of the season was the catalyst for a four-run third inning that gave Colorado the lead and broke the game open. Led by three-consecutive doubles to open up the inning, the Rockies tacked on another four runs in the sixth to stretch their lead to 10-1 and effectively seal the victory.

After earning his first win of the season six days earlier, Gomber (2-4) threw his second consecutive quality start, allowing only three hits and striking out four. The left-hander has given up only one earned run in his past two starts after surrendering 22 in his first four.

“It’s night and day, for sure,” Gomber said. “I can just tell. I’m excited to pitch again waking up on the day I pitch. I’m just really excited to pitch again and compete. That’s kind of the biggest tell for me — I just feel like I’m enjoying baseball again, like I always have. ... It’s definitely way different than where I was a week or two weeks ago.”

Charlie Blackmon, Harold Castro and Mike Moustakas each drove in two runs for the Rockies. Blackmon’s run on Cron’s third-inning homer moved him past Larry Walker for sole possession of second place on the franchise’s all-time list.

Evan Longoria’s 463-foot home run in the second inning was the only source of offense for much of the day for the Diamondbacks, who had scored at least nine runs in four of their previous five games at Colorado.

Arizona starter Ryne Nelson (1-2) pitched just four innings, allowing six runs and nine hits. The right-hander has given up 15 earned runs in 14 innings across his past three starts.

“When you’re kind of getting blown out of the water, it’s not a good feeling and it’s tough to kind of show up with that same sort of confidence that we need to have,” Cron said. “I think a day like today can be huge, huge for the offense especially. Hopefully, we can just keep it going.”

Diamondbacks right fielder Dominic Fletcher hit a double in his first MLB at-bat and scored a run later in the inning. Following an 11-4 win Saturday night, Arizona called up the 25-year-old from Triple-A Reno, where he was batting .323 with three home runs.

Rockies: RHP Noah Davis (right elbow inflammation) was placed on the 15-day injured list and RHP Nick Mears was recalled from Triple-A Albuquerque. Black said Davis’ injury “should quiet down in a couple of weeks.”

Diamondbacks: OF Corbin Carroll was not in the lineup after suffering what was described as a left knee contusion after colliding into the left field wall Saturday. Manager Torey Lovullo had said after Saturday’s game that Carroll was “day to day” after tests on his injured left knee came back “very, very positive.” … To make room for Fletcher, LHP Anthony Misiewicz was recalled.

Rockies: RHP Ryan Feltner (2-2) will go up against Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Rockies rout Diamondbacks to break home losing streak

DENVER (AP) — The Seattle&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/NHL/status/1652901886142431232">Kraken converged from all points</a>&nbsp;on the ice to the same spot — Philipp Grubauer's net.

A fitting gathering place to celebrate another first for this young franchise.

Grubauer was stellar in stopping 33 shots,&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/SeattleKraken/status/1652900922341888001">Oliver Bjorkstrand scored twice</a>&nbsp;and the Kraken eliminated the defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado Avalanche with a 2-1 win in Game 7 on Sunday night.

The Kraken became the first expansion team to beat the reigning Stanley Cup champs in their inaugural playoff series, according to NHL Stats.

“A great accomplishment,” said Kraken forward Yanni Gourde, who had two assists. “Our fans have been amazing. They deserve this.”

Bjorkstrand scored one goal on a fortuitous deflection — the puck hit off a stick and glove — and another with a liner past goaltender Alexandar Georgiev that clanged off the post. Seattle grabbed the lead in every game in the series.

Next up for the second-year Kraken is a second-round series against the Stars that opens in Dallas on Tuesday night. Seattle was 1-1-1 against Dallas in the regular season.

The Kraken take a heap of momentum with them, too.

“It gives them that check mark of success,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said.

Mikko Rantanen was credited with a power-play goal for Colorado after a shot by Nathan MacKinnon clipped him and went in. MacKinnon appeared to score early in the third period to tie it at 2, but Seattle challenged the play and the goal was disallowed due to Colorado being offside.

Seattle's video crew turned in an MVP-caliber performance all series.

The Avalanche pulled Georgiev with under 2 minutes remaining but couldn't get the equalizer. It allowed the Kraken to accomplish another franchise first — a series-clinching celebration.

“Lots more to come from our group,” Grubauer said. “That was only series one.”

Colorado has now lost its last six Game 7s. The last time the Avalanche won a winner-take-all Game 7 was 2002, when they beat San Jose 1-0 courtesy of a goal from Hall of Fame forward Peter Forsberg.

Both teams lost players for the series due to hard hits. Jared McCann didn’t play again after taking a hit from Cale Makar along the boards in Game 4, which drew a one-game suspension (Game 5) for the Avalanche defenseman. Colorado was without&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/avalanche-kraken-cogliano-stanley-cup-4860713be59e815088226879abfd000a">Andrew Cogliano</a>&nbsp;for Game 7 after he suffered a fracture in his neck following a hit along the boards from Kraken forward Jordan Eberle, who didn’t face supplemental discipline.

MacKinnon energized the crowd with what looked like a tying goal. But it was taken off the board following a challenge as Artturi Lehkonen was ruled in the zone before the puck entered.

It’s the second time this series the Kraken have used a challenge to negate an Avalanche score.

The Kraken also deflated the capacity crowd by doing what they’ve done in every game this series — score first.

“This is a really good hockey team,” Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said of the Kraken. “The one thing they were that we weren’t in the series was consistent.”

Held without a goal all series coming in, Bjorkstrand was credited with a goal in the second period that glanced the stick of Alex Newhook and then off the glove of Ben Meyers and into the goal. Bjorkstrand scored again nearly four minutes later on a breakaway down the side to make it 2-0.

Bjorkstrand nearly had a hat trick but his shot late in the game hit the post.

“I didn’t want to go out and not being able to sleep at night because I didn’t perform well,” Bjorkstrand explained. “Some nights you just kind of feel the puck better and I feel like this is just one of those nights.”

With 27.3 seconds left in the second period, MacKinnon lined a shot that glanced off Rantanen and went by Grubauer. MacKinnon’s assist on the play was his 100th career playoff point. He joins the company of Joe Sakic (188) and Forsberg (159) as the only Avalanche players to reach the 100-point milestone in the postseason.

Grubauer was sensational in the first period against his former team. He stopped 16 shots to set the tone for the evening.

The banged-up Avalanche were missing forwards Darren Helm (upper body), Cogliano and Valeri Nichushkin (personal reasons), along with defenseman Josh Manson (lower body) in Game 7.

They’ve been without captain Gabriel Landeskog all season after he underwent knee surgery in October.

“Tough year overall," MacKinnon said. “Obviously, during the season, we’re going to say all of the right things, but it’s hard missing the guys. ... We played a really great game, just couldn’t find the back of the net.”

Kraken forward Tye Kartye turned 22 on Sunday. ... Colorado finished 2 for 18 on the power play in the series.

🥎 Chadron State clinches playoff berth with series win over Pueblo

SEATTLE (AP) — It took six games of these playoffs for the Colorado Avalanche to finally look the part of a defending Stanley Cup champion.

Colorado’s reward? A trip back home for Game 7 and the chance to dispatch the pesky Seattle Kraken.

Mikko Rantanen scored his seventh goal of the playoffs, Artturi Lehkonen scored twice, including an empty-net goal in the closing seconds, and the Avalanche beat the Kraken 4-1 on Friday night in their first-round playoff series.

Rantanen scored in the final seconds of the first period, tying it at 1 after Seattle posted the first goal yet again. The Avalanche then dominated the final two periods, flashing some of what made them Stanley Cup champs a season ago.

“I don’t think we’ve had a full 60 (minutes) yet, a full, good 60 and today we did. We played three good periods, even though they scored the first goal again, but we (stuck) with it and played to our identity,” Rantanen said.

Erik Johnson scored his first of the playoffs on a deflected shot 7:21 into the second. Lehkonen redirected Devon Toews' slap pass at 16:57 to give Colorado a 3-1 lead. Toews had two assists, as did Cale Makar after being suspended for Game 5.

“We reiterated it after the game. Any time we’ve had adversity, we’ve said we’re going to take it one step at a time and go right at it," Makar said. "Huge character win for us tonight, hopefully gave a lot of guys confidence in terms of what we’re able to do out there.”

Game 7 will be Sunday in Denver. It’s the first Game 7 in franchise history for Seattle and the first for the Avalanche since the second round of the 2020 playoffs in the bubble, when Colorado lost to Dallas.

“It's a new opportunity for this group and we've been a good road team all year. That's been a strength of this team,” Seattle's Jordan Eberle said. “We've got nothing to lose.”

Vince Dunn became the 14th different player to score a goal for Seattle this postseason when he slipped a slap shot past Colorado goalie Alexandar Georgiev at 15:48 of the first. Dunn was second in points for Seattle during the regular season but had been held without a point until scoring his third career playoff goal.

But Georgiev’s night was mostly quiet, although he made big stops on Oliver Bjorkstrand and Jaden Schwartz in the final minutes. Georgiev finished with 22 saves.

“They deserved tonight's win. They played well. They were a little bit better than we were and we couldn’t push our way back into the game,” Seattle coach Dave Hakstol said.

Seattle goalie Philipp Grubauer was peppered all night and only some spectacular saves kept the score from getting out of hand. Grubauer finished with 35 stops.

Colorado played in its first elimination game since Game 6 of the 2021 conference semifinals, when the Avs were eliminated by Vegas. One of the most impressive parts of Colorado’s run to the Stanley Cup last year was its ability to control every series.

But Seattle’s win in Game 5 put Colorado in a precarious position and the Avs responded with their most complete performance of the series.

“We just wanted to play our game, we played our best game of the series and were rewarded for it,” Johnson said. “And they’re a very good team, they really put us on our heels at times. But it felt good to play our game and get rewarded for it.”

Seattle became the first team to take the lead in each of its first six playoff games in franchise history. The 1918 Toronto Arenas took the lead in their first five playoff games. Seattle matched that in Game 5 and surpassed it in Game 6.

Colorado appeared to score the opening goal on a shot from Bowen Byrum, but the goal was overturned after Seattle successfully challenged for offside.

Seattle played without leading scorer Jared McCann for the second straight game. McCann was hurt on a check from Makar in Game 4 that led to his suspension. ... Seattle F Matty Beniers was called for just the second penalty of his career on a tripping call in the second period.

Get ready for Game 7! Avalanche stay alive with 4-1 win over Kraken

DENVER (AP) — Ketel Marte hit an early homer, Josh Rojas drove in three runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Colorado 9-1 on Friday night, sending the Rockies to their sixth straight home loss.

Christian Walker hit a go-ahead double in a three-run seventh inning, and NL West-leading Arizona broke open the game with a five-run ninth.

Colorado is a National League-worst 8-19, the Rockies worst start since they began 6-21 in 2005. Colorado dropped to 3-8 at Coors Field.

Merrill Kelly (2-3) allowed one run and six hits in six innings with five strikeouts. He walked one after issuing 17 in his first five starts.

“I felt like I missed more spots than I hit," Kelly said. “I’m happy I was able to throw some strikes today.”

Kyle Freeland (2-3) gave up three runs and five hits in six-plus innings. He is 0-3 in four starts since beating San Diego in his season opener and defeating Washington on April 6.

Marte drove a 1-2 slider into the left-field seats in the third inning, but C.J. Cron’s two-out RBI single tied the score in the bottom half. The Rockies didn’t get another baserunner until Charlie Blackmon’s leadoff single in the eighth.

With the score 1-1 in the seventh, Freeland walked Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and Walker doubled off the base of the wall in left-center.

Justin Lawrence relieved, and Rojas pinch hit with two outs and grounded into a run-scoring forceout. Gabriel Moreno followed with a sacrifice fly for a 4-1 lead.

“Just had some quality at bats at the right time,” manager Torey Lovullo said. “The right guys stepped up in the right situation over and drove big runs and ran the bases well. We played good defense, got some outstanding starting pitching, so there’s no mystery; when we do that we’re going to win some baseball games.”

Rojas hit a two-run double in the ninth off Dinelson Lamet, a ball off the center-field warning track, Marte had a sacrifice fly, and Gurriel and Walker tacked on RBI singles against Ty Blach.

Rockies: RHP Germán Márquez was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation ad said he was concerned he may need Tommy John surgery. Márquez had an MRI on Thursday and will undergo another Monday. ... Manager Bud Black said OF Randal Grichuk is with the team and feeling 100%. Grichuk has yet to play this year after having offseason bilateral sports hernia surgery.

Arizona had a logjam on the basepaths in the ninth inning. Corbin Carroll and Geraldo Perdomo were on first and second when Rojas’ ball went to the warning track. Perdomo waited before taking off from second while Carroll raced around the bases, nearly catching Perdomo.

Perdomo scored just steps ahead of Carroll.

“I thought he eventually would have caught up to him,” Lovullo said. “He’s one of the fastest human beings I’ve ever been around.”

The Eagles had their largest victory since February 2018 in game one, defeating the visitors 13-0 in five innings. In game two, CSC won 12-9. On and off rain and high winds made for a chilly afternoon at the CSC softball field. Chadron State scored at least two runs in all four innings they batted in during game one. Jill Bishop added a two-RBI single for the visitors in the top of the fifth inning, lowering their deficit to five. Kroll added her third and final homerun in the bottom of the inning, this one being a two-RBI scoring Zimmerman and giving CSC a 12-5 lead. Kroll was a solo homerun short of hitting for a homerun cycle on the day. Approximately 82,900 tickets were claimed between the season-ticket holder on-sale on Tuesday and the general public on-sale on Wednesday and Thursday. CLEVELAND (AP) — Charlie Blackmon homered and drove in two runs, Brenton Doyle had his first three major league hits and the Colorado Rockies beat the Cleveland Guardians 5-1 on Tuesday night to clinch their first series win this season.

Blackmon hit his 40th leadoff homer on the second pitch of the game and had an RBI double off Peyton Battenfield (0-2) in a three-run second that built a 4-0 lead. He ranks ninth on the career leadoff homer list, four behind Brady Anderson.

Kris Bryant singled Blackmon home, allowing him to tie Hall of Famer Larry Walker for second in Rockies history with 892 runs.

“Being in the top 10 all-time leading off, that is sweet,” said Blackmon, who has spent his entire 13-year career with Colorado. “It always feels great to be part of lists like that. And for the Rockies, Larry is a very, very good player to be mentioned with.”

A day after going 0 for 3 with a walk in his debut, the 24-year-old Doyle singled in the second, hit an RBI double in the sixth and reached on an infield single in the eighth. He also stole two bases.

“It was nice to get the hit out of the way on my first at-bat,” Doyle said, holding his milestone baseball. “I always feel comfortable running because that’s the way I play, 100% all the time.”

Colorado had lost 11 of 12 before winning the first two games in the three-game series by an 11-1 margin. The Rockies have won consecutive games for just the third time this season but remain a National League-worst 7-17.

Ryan Feltner (2-2), who grew up in nearby Hudson, Ohio, allowed an unearned run and five hits over six innings. The Ohio State product struck out six and walked none.

Brent Suter and Justin Lawrence completed the six-hitter for Colorado.

“I’m so used to being in the stands here as a kid, it was super cool to pitch in this ballpark,” Feltner said. “I had a lot of first-pitch strikes and great defense helped me tonight.”

Defending AL Central champion Cleveland, which is 1-4 on a six-game homestand, ended its 14-inning scoreless streak in the sixth when Amed Rosario’s sacrifice fly scored Steven Kwan. The Guardians are 3-8 at Progressive Field.

“It’s easier said than done, but we have to do better,” Cleveland manager Terry Francona said. “We’re seeing some good pitching and not feeling real good at the plate, but we’ve got to battle because no one is going to feel sorry for us.”

Battenfield made his third start since being recalled on April 12, giving up season highs of four runs and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.

“Not my best performance, but it happens,” he said. “I’m human.”

Guardians RHP Tanner Bibee, one of the top prospects in the organization, could make his big league debut Wednesday. Bibee was scratched from his start for Triple-A Columbus, lining him up to fill the spot created by Cleveland’s weekend doubleheader.

The 24-year-old is 10-2 with a 2.13 ERA over two minor league seasons.

Rockies: RHP Germán Márquez (right forearm inflammation), who has been on the 15-day IL since April 11, will be activated for the three-game series finale.

Blackmon's leadoff blast sets tone in Rockies win at Cleveland

DENVER (AP) — Michael Malone surveyed the scene Tuesday night and wondered where everyone was — not just Denver’s fans, but the Nuggets themselves.

“Our team was kind of like the crowd tonight — we were late arriving,” Malone said after Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray helped the top-seeded Nuggets overcame a slow start to eliminate the Minnesota Timberwolves 112-109 in Game 5 of their Western Conference first-round playoff series.

Anthony Edwards, who led Minnesota with 29 points, hit the back iron on a 27-foot 3-point attempt at the buzzer that would have sent the game into overtime.

The top-seeded Nuggets will face the fourth-seeded Phoenix Suns, who eliminated in the Los Angeles Clippers in five games, in the second round, which begins Saturday night in Denver.

Despite Denver being the better seed, Jokic called the Suns “the favorite to win the championship. They have an amazing, amazing group of guys, well-coached.” He went up and down their roster, saving special praise for Chris Paul, Kevin Durant and Deandre Ayton. “So, it's going to be a big challenge for us.”

"It's not how you want to live. Again, its all credit to us. We had many points during the season to let go of the rope or give up on the moment but we never ever did.“So, I love that about our guys. They kept competing.
