In a span of just a few hours Monday, There were several big announcements regarding the University of Nebraska Football program. First Athletic Director Trev Alberts announced that Scott Frost will continue to lead the Cornhuskers in the 2022 season. Alberts released the following statement.

We share a love of Nebraska and this football program and want nothing more than Nebraska Football to again compete for championships. "We all recognize our record has not been what anyone wants it to be. I have been clear that I have been looking for incremental progress, and I have seen that in several key areas this season. Our team has continued to compete at a high level and the young men in our program have remained unified and shown great resiliency, which is an important reflection of the leadership of Coach Frost and his staff." Coach Scott Frost then announced that Four Husker football assistant coaches have been fired, effective immediately.&nbsp; Those let go included Offensive Line Coach Greg Austin, Offensive Coordinator/Wide Receivers Coach Matt Lubick, Running Backs Coach Ryan Held and Quarterbacks Coach Mario Verduzco.&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp;Head Coach Scott Frost issued the following statement.

Nebraska has a bye week this week. The Huskers will travel to Wisconsin, Saturday November 20 and finish the season at home vs Iowa on Friday November 26.&nbsp; The Nebraska/Wisconsin game will kick off at 1:30 pm MT and will be televised on either ABC or ESPN.&nbsp;

Frost will stay for 2022-4 offensive assistants let go

TOPEKA — In 2019, Greeley County High
 School suffered its worst season in years, finishing winless and 
struggling week in and week out to field a complete team.

At the time, the school was playing 
eight-man football, but dwindling interest in trying out for football 
forced a remarkable seven forfeits throughout a nine-game schedule. In 
the two games they were able to play, they lost 44-0 against Rawlins 
County and 68-20 against Cheylin.&nbsp;

After conversations about the future 
of the program, the school made the move to six-man football last year. 
This year the team finished 2-5, and while the team may not be winning a
 lot, the players are having fun again.

“At least the kids are getting to 
play there, right?” said Greeley County High School athletic director 
Greg Cook. “It keeps interest in fall activities. It allows the kids to 
still play football and get all the benefits of being part of a team.”

High school football participation 
has steadily declined over the past decade as concerns around head 
trauma and other injuries escalate. Add that to the declining population
 in rural cities and towns, and many schools across Kansas are facing 
similar challenges to Greeley County.

Six-man football first popped up in 
Kansas during the 1960s but did not gain widespread traction and 
eventually disappeared. In 2014, faced with very few options to keep 
their program afloat, Weskan became the first Kansas team to play 
six-man since 2003.

Since then, the six-man ranks have 
risen to 15 schools operating under the Six-man Football Association. 
The association culminates each year with the Wild West Bowl state 
championship game in Dodge City.

The participating schools have 
primarily been in the Northwest and Southwest parts of Kansas. Burrton, 
in central Kansas, is the furthest eastern school, but that could soon 
change.

In September, the Kansas State High 
School Activities Association officially sanctioned six-man football 
following a unanimous vote of their board of directors. According to the
 association, 26 teams will play six-man next fall.

Those schools’ total enrollment for 
ninth, 10th and 11th grade must range from 19 to 55 students, although 
some in that range have chosen to play eight-man football. In addition 
to an official schedule and playoffs, Cook said the association’s 
sanction will help smaller schools like his.

“The schools that are borderline that
 are hanging on to eight-man — if they should happen to lose some 
students or have some small classes — it’ll be easier for them to move 
down to six-man,” he said.

Altoona-Midway, Chase, Chetopa, 
Ingalls, Southern Coffey County, Centre, Peabody-Burns, Southern Cloud, 
Tescott, Waverly, Wetmore and Triplains-Brewster will all be part of the
 newly sanctioned division next year, the state high school athletics 
association announced. Many of the schools switching to the six-man 
division hail from the eastern side of the state.&nbsp;

Those teams have a combined 19 wins 
and 72 losses this fall. Chase and Chetopa took forfeits because of low 
participation, and Centre was unable to field an eight-man team and 
played some six-man games.

Peabody-Burns was exploring a six-man move this summer. Only Waverly had a winning record last season.

“The game of football is great for 
kids, it’s great for communities and it is safer than it’s ever been,” 
said Mark Lentz, assistant executive director for the state High School 
Activities Association.

A full high school schedule is nine football games. Last year, six-man squads averaged 6.2 games.

In states like Colorado, Texas and 
Nebraska, the six-man modifications to the standard 11-man rules have 
resulted in high-scoring games. This trend has held true in Kansas so 
far.

The games are heavy on offense and, 
like eight-man football, can be extremely high scoring, with some games 
eclipsing 200 combined points scored. Besides the score and shorter 
field (80 yards vs the normal 100 yards) six-man is unique to both 
eight-person and 11-person football.&nbsp;

However, the aim of the game is still the same, Lentz said.

“Football is football,” he said. “It 
just looks a little bit different when you have six players on a side 
versus 11 but it’s still all about blocking and tackling and the 
fundamentals that you learn from playing a team sport.”

One noticeable rule change is that to
 advance the ball forward on a run play, the ball must be exchanged 
between players at least once. As a result, the running back will 
oftentimes receive the snap and immediately toss the ball to the 
quarterback, giving them the choice to either run or pass the ball.

Rather than the typical 10 yards needed for a first down, six-man football requires teams to advance the ball 15 yards.

Scoring is also unique, with extra 
points worth two when kicked as opposed to one. Field goals are worth 
more as well — four points earned during a successful kick versus the 
typical three.

The other big rule change: Everyone 
on the field is eligible to receive the ball. That includes the center. 
Though three players must be on the line of scrimmage on many calls the 
center will be the lone lineman — and the defense will still have to 
wonder if he’s going out to receive a pass.

“It’s taken me four years to finally 
figure out some of the little nuances about the game of six-man,” said 
Jon Schnable, football head coach and athletic director for Rolla High 
School. “At first, I thought if you have a big-sized team, you can get 
away with a lot of things, but if you look at the six-man schools, their
 kids’ size isn’t a priority, it’s speed. If you’ve got some speed on 
your team, you can win a lot of ballgames.

While the number of players and 
various rules may differ, advocates of the six-man variety will take 
what they can get, especially when participation numbers continue to 
drop across the country.

According to data from the <a target="_blank" href="https://www.aspeninstitute.org/">Aspen Institute</a> and the <a target="_blank" href="https://nfhs.org/">National Federation of State High School Associations</a>,
 from 2008-19 to 2018-19 the total number of youths aged 6 to 18 playing
 tackle football fell by more than 620,000. Participation nationwide now
 sits at just over 1 million high school players.

Over that same decade attendance at <a target="_blank" href="https://www.ncaa.org/championships/statistics/ncaa-football-attendance">college</a> and professional football also declined.

However, there is optimism among some
 that the annual declines in participation appear to be leveling off for
 now. While COVID-19 made data for 2020 difficult to collect, in 2019 
high school football participation only dropped by 2,489 students.

Previous years saw declines of 23,311, 20,540 and 30,829 students playing football.

“These (2019) numbers suggest to us 
that parents are appreciative of the risk minimization efforts that have
 been put in place,” said Karissa Niehoff, director of the National 
Federation of State High School Associations. “Every state has enacted 
rules that limit the amount of contact before the season and during 
practice, and every state has established concussion protocols and 
laws.”

Kansas has also seen the drop in 
participation level off recently with football participation hovering in
 the high 14,000-student range since 2016. In 2020, however, the state 
high school activates association recorded the first notable decrease in
 participation since that year.

Still, other research shows <a target="_blank" href="https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0277953618307202">increasing parental concerns about concussion risks</a>. This raises concerns for future participation across the country and in Kansas.

For example, some have suggested implementing age-based restrictions on physical contact in the sport.

In a <a target="_blank" href="https://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/143/5/e20182402?casa_token=1LUpwzsJF8YAAAAA%3AIoCBCMFs-5IuTjXhBPM5J-856x44gwgkAH0bpE87Wa07EiwZ-rBHOppsO-dK9xeibl-yl2YhsMif">2019 study of the favorability of an age cap</a>,
 several researchers wrote, “US parents are willing to accept age limits
 on tackling in youth football.” They added that the organizations 
responsible for shaping public discourse about the topic, like the 
American Academy of Pediatrics, “may find it useful to consider US 
parents’ attitudes regarding age limits on tackling, alongside research 
quantifying the risk of tackling, when they revisit this topic.”

As the first team to bring six-man football back to Kansas, Weskan has seen it evolve and grow over the years.

Brett Clow, athletic director and 
head coach of Weskan’s football team, said he expects six-man football’s
 growth to continue. Like any changes to a sport with deep roots in many
 communities across the state, six-man football has its doubters who 
believe only 11-man football to be “real football,” but Clow said with 
the sport under the pressure it is, six-man is an important alternative.

“When you look at… some of these 
small towns fighting to keep football, this is now another option,” he 
said. “If a school is thinking about it, I would only say how great it’s
 been for us and that it is worth at least giving it a shot.”

Clow also said he was excited to see 
the influx of new teams after the state association sanctioned the 
six-man games and hopes there could be as many as 40 such teams in the 
state one day.

The format, he said, can help schools
 that haven’t experienced much past success, like Natoma High School, 
which won the six-man state title this year after not having won a 
single playoff game for 47 years.

“It’s really cool for teams like that
 and schools like that to have success for the first time,” Clow said. 
“I think once people do see it and schools start participating in it, 
they’ll realize how much fun it is and that the kids really enjoy it.”

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- November 6, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College football team led by just 7-0 at halftime, but scored five touchdowns and kicked a field goal in the second half while defeating Western Oregon 45-7 in a non-conference game played at Elliott Field in Chadron on Saturday afternoon. ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — The trade began to hit Von Miller as he toddled past the photo gallery of great moments that decorate the Denver Broncos headquarters.

The featured shot is the one of him knocking the ball and, in effect, the Lombardi Trophy, from Cam Newton's grasp five years and nine months ago.

"Always have Super Bowl 50,” a choked-up Miller said on a gray Monday morning as snowflakes danced into the black Cadillac Escalade's open back window and melted on his tie-dye hoodie.

“Seeing the pictures as I was walking out made me tear up.”

Miller is no longer the face of the franchise in Denver.

The&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/pgraham34/status/1455235920869789698?s=20">loquacious linebacker</a>&nbsp;is headed West to join Aaron Donald and Jalen Ramsey with the Los Angeles Rams in a trade that surprised him.

“It’s all kind of new,” said Miller, who insisted he didn't ask out. “I’m on my way to L.A.”

“Great team. Been a huge fan of Aaron Donald for a long time,” Miller said. “They’ve got a great defense. Jalen Ramsey, Leonard Floyd, all these guys. I’m excited."

The Rams are sending the Broncos second- and third-round picks in the 2022 draft for the perennial Pro Bowler. The Broncos also are picking up $9 million of the $9.722 million left on his contract.

Miller’s trophy case includes his Super Bowl 50 MVP award for leading Denver to a 24-10 win over heavily favored Carolina following the 2015 season and 2011 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year honor.

“Von was the very first draft pick we made back in 2011 at a time when we needed an impact player to turn this team around,” said John Elway, the Broncos president of football operations. "Von dedicated himself to become an elite, record-setting pass rusher and future Hall of Famer while helping us to one of the winningest periods in team history.

“Von was always at his best when we needed him the most," Elway added. “Our Super Bowl 50 win and playoff run that year would not have been possible without Von turning in one of the most dominant individual performances of all time.”

Broncos president Joe Ellis called Miller a “franchise icon” and general manager George Paton said, “I'll always be a fan of his and I look forward to watching his continued impact on our league.”

Miller is an eight-time Pro Bowl selection, seven-time All-Pro and a member of the league’s 2010s All-Decade team. And he’s the Broncos’ franchise leader with 110½ sacks in the regular season and has another 6½ in the playoffs.

“It's hard to put the emotions into words," Miller said. "It's always tough whenever you leave. I love all my fans. I love Broncos country. When I said Broncos for life, I meant that. It was an honor and a privilege to play here.

“John Elway picked me. It's life changing. Ever since then, been able to play with Peyton Manning, DeMarcus Ware, Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins, Tim Tebow. It's still kind of hard to put into words.”

“&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/RamsNFL/status/1455220386233151488?s=20">We're all in</a>,” the Rams (7-1) tweeted along with a meme of actor John Malkovich splashing the pot at the poker table.

And it looks as though the Broncos (4-4) are folding their hand.

With Miller watching from the sideline because of a sprained ankle he said should be fine by next weekend, the Broncos edged Washington&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/nfl-sports-denver-broncos-justin-simmons-washington-football-team-95941260d6fc256c6073d685996f424e">17-10</a>&nbsp;Sunday, narrowly avoiding their first winless October since 1967.

But it took two defensive stops in the final minute because the Broncos bungled their last possession following safety Justin Simmons' seemingly game-sealing end zone interception with 49 seconds left.

In between Teddy Bridgewater inexplicably throwing an incompletion to stop the clock with 32 seconds left and saving Washington a timeout, the Broncos fumbled twice, losing the second one at their 24 with 21 seconds remaining.

That served as a fitting farewell to Miller, who never got back to the playoffs with Denver after leading their Super Bowl parade.

Plagued by instability at quarterback, unimaginative offensive play-calling, draft busts and free-agent flops, the once-proud franchise is mired in one of its longest runs of mediocrity since the 1960s.

“This team, they’re going to start winning soon,” Miller said. “I wanted to be a part of it to fix it.”

Miller joins a Rams team that's tied with the Packers and Cardinals for the NFL's best record at 7-1.

Rams coach Sean McVay said Miller will take his physical Tuesday, and he's optimistic he will play Sunday night against Tennessee.

“You look at what it takes to be successful defensively and it’s about affecting and influencing the quarterback, and this guy does it as well as anybody over the course of his career,” McVay said.

Miller, who's in the final year of his contract, was sidelined all of last year with a dislocated ankle tendon. He had a splashy comeback, winning the AFC Defensive Player of the Month honor in September.

Despite a quiet October, Miller was still considered a gem for contenders as Tuesday's trade deadline approached.

Miller's departure means kicker Brandon McManus is the only remaining member of the 2015 team that won the franchise's third Super Bowl thanks to Miller's memorable performance that cemented his legacy as one of his generation's top pass rushers.

Miller was rewarded with a record six-year, $114.1 million contract that pays him $17.5 million this season.

Had the Broncos held on to Miller and let him leave in free agency after the season, they best they could have netted was a fifth-round compensatory pick in 2022.

In LA, Miller joins fellow stars Donald and Ramsey, the type of talent he hasn't had around him since the Broncos were regular Super Bowl threats during Manning's four seasons in Denver from 2012-15.

Moreover, former Broncos and Rams defensive coordinator Wade Phillips said Miller is a better fit in L.A.'s version of the 3-4 defensive scheme and should shine in sunny California.

&nbsp; Colorado School of Mines scored touchdowns on its first two possessions and continued to dominate much of the game while defeating Chadron State 34-7 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash in Golden on Saturday. Quarterback John Matocha led the Orediggers by completing 23 of 31 passes for 310 yards and three touchdowns.&nbsp; All-star tailback Michael Zeman was the game's leading rusher with 96 yards and scored Mines' remaining two TDs. Mines is now 8-1 for the season and 6-1 in the conference. Chadron wins Pilfold Volleyball Invite

Chadron Public Schools will dismiss early this Friday, Oct. 29. The CPS Administration issued the follow media release:

Chadron Public Schools:“Chadron Cardinals will be hosting first round playoff game on October 29, 2021. Game time is 2:00pm. The district will have an early dismissal at 12:00 pm to allow time for students to dismiss, clear the area safely and allow for fan parking. Come out and support the Cardinals. The game is a NSAA event. Passes will not be accepted.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

&nbsp; ALAMOSA, Colo. -- October 16, 2021 --&nbsp;Chadron State quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6739">Dalton Holst</a>&nbsp;threw four touchdown passes and also ran for a career-high 70 yards to picking up several crucial first downs Saturday afternoon when the Eagles built a large lead and made it stand up for 45-35 win over Adams State at Alamosa, Colo. Now 3-3 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and 3-4 for the season, the Eagles were ahead 36-7 late in the first half before the Grizzlies, who started slowly, but eventually made some big plays that narrowed the final margin. The stats illustrate much the Eagles dominated. They finished with 33 first downs compared to 15 for Adams State, out-yarded the Grizzlies 523 to 289 and ran 75 plays, 22 more than the hosts.&nbsp; CSC also converted on eight of its 12 third-down situations. It's understandable why the Grizzlies' offense struggled early. Their top three quarterbacks could not play because of COVID protocol. &nbsp;The replacement was Brad Smith, a senior tight end who apparently had not played the position previously, at least since he joined the Grizzlies as a transfer. &nbsp;&nbsp; Smith eventually settled into the position and played admirably. &nbsp;He completed 12 of 21 passes for three touchdowns and also broke loose for 70-yard touchdown in the third quarter. But Chadron State scored early and often, and the lead was too much for the Grizzlies to overcome. &nbsp;&nbsp; After&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6759">Chad Mikelson</a>&nbsp;returned the opening kickoff 44 yards, the Eagles scored on their fourth play from scrimmage when Holst connected with&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6728">Montel Gladney</a>&nbsp;on a 22-yard pass. Chadron State scored again in the opening quarter on a 12-yard toss to&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6788">Cole Thurness</a>&nbsp;and went ahead 22-0 early in the second frame on Thurness's two-yard run to cap a 75-yard drive. Holst, who completed 16 of 27 passes for 248 yards, also hooked up with freshman&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6817">Jamal Browder</a>&nbsp;on a 54-yard touchdown in the second quarter and hit Mikelson, who made an over-the-shoulder grab, with a 16-yard strike in the end zone in the third frame. The Eagles also scored in the second quarter on an 18-yard run by sophomore tailback&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6718">Jeydon Cox</a>, the game's leading rusher with 18 carries to 122 yards. The Grizzlies posted their first touchdown early in the second quarter when, Bryce Hampton, who played on both sides of the ball, made a one-handed interception of a Holst pass the took it 25 yards to the goal line. Hampton also caught three of Smith's passes for 78 yards, including touchdowns of 27 yards just before halftime and a 51-yarder midway in the fourth quarter to wrap up the scoring. &nbsp; Adams State's other TD was on a seven-yard pass to Quintio Garrett early in the final period. After the Grizzlies closed the gap to 10 points, they never got the ball again, as the Eagles maintained possession during a 12-play drive that used up the final 7 ½ minutes. CSC Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=503">Jay Long</a>&nbsp;said Adams State was a tough place to play when he was the Eagles' center in the late 1990s, and said its still true.&nbsp; The last two times the Eagles visited Alamosa, they lost 31-30 and 65-62 heart-breakers.&nbsp; "I'm proud of our guys for finding a way to win today," he added.
