CHADRON, Neb. -- October 8, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron&nbsp;State College volleyball team&nbsp;(3-11, 1-6 RMAC)&nbsp;came up short Friday night in a 3-1 loss to the New Mexico Highlands Cowgirls&nbsp;(7-10, 3-4 RMAC)&nbsp;in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference clash.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Eagles came out strong in the first two sets. In a 26-24&nbsp;set one&nbsp;loss&nbsp;that featured eight tie scores and five lead changes, the&nbsp;Eagles&nbsp;earned nine kills and only 7 errors.&nbsp;&nbsp;

In&nbsp;a&nbsp;25-14&nbsp;set two&nbsp;win, the Eagles dominated on the offensive and defensive side of the ball. They had 14 kills and one error out of 28 total attempts, giving them a season best hit percentage of&nbsp;.464.&nbsp;Outside hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7893">Amber Harvey</a>&nbsp;was responsible for five kills and zero errors in that set.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Highlands retaliated in sets three and four, winning 25-23 and 25-14.&nbsp;In set three, there were five tie scores and two lead changes. Though both teams had&nbsp;hit percentages of less than .150, CSC was unable to close out as the Cowgirls snuck away with the set win.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Chadron's offensive leader was outside hitter&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7885">Olivia Moten-Schell</a>, who had her best game of the season. She came up with season-highs of 14 kills and 17 total points.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Numerous Eagles came up with multiple blocks&nbsp;on&nbsp;the night. They were&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7894">Aiyana Fujiyama</a>&nbsp;(one block solo, four block assists),&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7892">Audrey Bennett</a>&nbsp;(one block solo, three block assists),&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7890">Micaiah Vrbka</a>&nbsp;(one block solo, three block assists), and&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7893">Amber Harvey</a>&nbsp;(three block assists).&nbsp;&nbsp;

"[I] thought we came out really strong and stuck to our game plan," said Head Volleyball Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=522">Jennifer Stadler</a>. "We got a little timid down the stretch and started making too many errors. We have to play a cleaner match on our side of the court."&nbsp;

The Eagles will return Saturday&nbsp;evening to host Adams State (7-9, 3-4 RMAC) for their Homecoming match.

&nbsp; Seven former Chadron State athletes will be inducted into the college's Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, October 23 following the Eagles' football game with Fort Lewis College.&nbsp; The game will kick off at noon while the Hall of Fame dinner and induction program will begin at 6 o'clock in the Student Center. The inductees are four football players, two volleyball players and a men's basketball player. The football players are Rob Evans and Austin Forster, both Gordon High School graduates, Marvin Jackson of Cheyenne and Aaron Turner of Golden, Colo.&nbsp; The volleyball players are Kelly Kraus Randall of Littleton, Colo., and Alysia Wardyn Clark, a graduate of St. Paul, Neb., High.&nbsp; The basketball honoree is Elijah Collins of Aurora, Ill.&nbsp; Evans and Forster were high school teammates who starred on different sides of the ball for the Eagles.&nbsp; Evans was a four-year starter at defensive tackle who never missed any significant playing time because of injuries. Forster was a star punt returner and tailback, who had the misfortune of breaking his collarbone twice during his college career. Evans capped his career in 2003 by being voted the Eagles' outstanding defensive player, was unanimous all-conference, was placed on the Omaha World-Herald's all-state college team, was an Academic All-American and graduated summa cum laude.&nbsp; He is now a lawyer in Laramie, Wyo.&nbsp; His brother, Chris, was a defensive end and was inducted into the CSC Hall of Fame in 2017.&nbsp; As a senior at Gordon in 1998, when he participated in 189 tackles, including 24 for minus yards, Rob earned Class C-1 all-state honors and played in the Shrine Game. He also was a two-time Class C 215-pound state champion wrestler while finishing his career with a 63-0 record. He and his wife Teresa have three sons.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; With four seniors at running back in 1999, his first year at Chadron State, Forster specialized in returning punts. He returned 45, still the most in CSC annals, averaging 11.8 yards and was voted the RMAC's all-conference punt returner.&nbsp; He took over at tailback as a sophomore, rushed for 1,077 yards and had 1,812 all-purpose yards, the most in school history at the time, and was first-team all-conference.&nbsp; He missed all but one game in 2001 because of injuries, but concluded his career in 2003 with 2,795 yards rushing, 407 yards receiving and 920 on punt returns. He still ranks fourth in CSC all-purpose yards with 4,185. Forester scored five touchdowns in a game twice.&nbsp; He also was the CSC Ivy Day King in 2002. As a senior at Gordon in 1997, he led the entire state in rushing with 1,970 yards, had 3,083 all-purpose yards, scored 32 touchdowns and participated in 130 tackles. His time of 10.7 seconds in the 100 meters as a senior in 1998 tied the fastest ever in the area. He is a rancher and has a water well business in the Gordon area. He and his wife Darcie have three boys and a girl. Jackson played cornerback and was the first Chadron State athlete to earn first-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference honors four times.&nbsp; He also was an All-West Region choice three times and a consensus All-American as a junior and senior in 2002 and '03. He has the Eagles' career pass interception record with 22 and returned four of them for touchdowns. He also averaged 29 yards on 35 kickoff returns, two of which he took 93 and 83 yards for TDs. In addition, Jackson broke up 45 passes and forced nine fumbles.&nbsp; He played in two all-star games following his senior season in 2004. He was inducted into the RMAC Hall of Fame in 2017.&nbsp; Marvin owns a business in his hometown of Cheyenne that specializes in basement and window restoration. He and partner, Carrie, have a girl and two boys. Turner was the Eagles' placekicker in 1999 and 2000 after sharing the duties with a senior in 1998. During his career, he made 28 of 38 field goals, for 73.7 percent, second best all-time, and 84 of 90 extra points for 93.3 percent, third all-time.&nbsp; His 57-yard field goal in his final home game in 2000 is the longest in school history.&nbsp; He also booted a 52-yarder that season as well as a 48-yarder in the Division II playoff game vs. Cal State Davis and put 64 of his 108 kickoffs in the end zone. In addition, Turner kicked a 20-yard field goal late in the game that allowed the West to tie the score in the Cactus Bowl in January 2001.&nbsp; He was Second-Team all-RMAC as a junior and First-Team as well as Second-Team West Regional as a senior. He also was a three-year basketball letterman, including the 1999-2000 team that had a 19-8 record. He owns an insurance business in his hometown. He and his wife, Kyle, have three daughters.&nbsp;&nbsp; Kelly Kraus Randle and her identical twin sister, Shelly Kraus, came to Chadron State from Pomona High in the Denver area. An all-star setter, Shelly was inducted in to the CSC Hall of Fame in 2019; now Kelly is receiving the honor, too. Kelly always exceeded expectations.&nbsp; The write-up in the program for her final home match said: "There may not be a better 5-foot-7 hitter in the country. She's all over the court making great plays." Throughout her career she was among the Eagles' leaders in kills, digs and ace serves.&nbsp; She had a particularly outstanding season as a junior in 2003, when she led the Eagles with 382 kills, led the RMAC with 578 digs and was named the Eagles' MVP. She was honorable mention all-conference twice and graduated with honors.&nbsp; She taught math for 12 years and has coached volleyball 17 years. She and her husband, L.D. Randle, have two boys.&nbsp; Bolstered by a 33-inch vertical jump, Alysia Wardyn Clark is remembered as an outstanding middle hitter/blocker for the Eagles. She had 402 blocks in 402 games, led the Eagles in kills as both a junior and a senior and ended her career in 2005 with 1,097 kills. She had the team's best hitting percentage among front row players all four years.&nbsp; Her .284 attack percentage as a junior in 2004 is the Eagles' best since 2000.&nbsp; She was voted the team's MVP as both a junior and a senior and was placed on two all-tournament teams her senior season. DENVER (AP) — Lamar Jackson won this one with his right arm. He used his quick feet to crown Baltimore's 23-7 thumping of the Denver Broncos and tie an NFL rushing record.

The Ravens (3-1) were in danger of coming up just short of matching the Steelers’ longstanding mark for consecutive games with at least 100 yards rushing before Baltimore cornerback Anthony Averett intercepted Broncos backup QB Drew Lock in the end zone with 3 seconds left.

Rather than take a knee, Jackson took the shotgun snap and hustled around left end for 5 yards as time expired. That gave the Ravens 102 yards on the ground, their 43rd consecutive 100-yard rushing game, tying the mark set by Pittsburgh from 1974-77.

“Oh yeah, 100% my call,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said unapologetically. "That’s one of those things that’s meaningful. As a head coach you have to be mindful of your team and your players and what it means to them. It’s a very, very tough record to accomplish and it’s a long-term record.

“I’m not going to say it’s more important than winning the game, for sure, it’s certainly not,” Harbaugh added. “But as a head coach you do that for your players and you do that for your coaches and it’s something they’ll have for the rest of their lives.”

Harbaugh's players appreciated their coach letting them go for the record.

"Whenever you’re in the record books it’s important, so it’s great to get it, said receiver Marquis Brown, who caught Jackson's 49-yard TD pass one week after dropping a trio of long passes.

“I wasn’t thinking about the record," Jackson said. "I was thinking about getting the win.”

Jackson missed two practices last week with a sore back, but it didn't look as if it affected him at all Sunday.

“I’m feeling good,” he said. “Did I look good?”

Although he was held to 28 yards rushing, Jackson threw for 316 yards.

“We wanted to limit his opportunities to carry it and scramble," Broncos coach Vic Fangio said. "We did that. But they were able to complete the long passes, which negated that.”

Only twice in his four-year NFL career has Jackson passed for more yards, once in the regular season (324) and once in the playoffs (365).

“I can’t believe people say he couldn’t throw. It’s wild, barbaric,” suggested Ravens receiver James Proche II. “That’s like saying water is dry. He’s just doing his job, nothing crazy, just doing what he do.”

Justin Tucker, who beat the Lions last week with an NFL-record long 66-yard field goal, was perfect from 40, 46 and 20 yards in Denver's thin air.

The Broncos (3-1) punted on 10 of their 12 possessions after punting just nine times total in their three wins. They&nbsp;lost starting QB Teddy Bridgewater&nbsp;to a concussion on his final pass of the first half.

Ravens rookie linebacker Odafe Oweh hit Bridgewater under the chin but wasn't flagged.

Neither was cornerback Tavon Young whistled one play earlier for hitting a defenseless receiver when his brutal hit sent WR/KR Diontae Spencer from the game with an injury to his sternum.

The injuries occurred during a series of curious calls by Broncos offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who had Bridgewater throw three times after Denver got the ball at its 17 with 1:02 left in the first half and Denver down 14-7.

All three throws fell incomplete — Bridgewater completed just 7 of 16 passes after posting 75% days in each of Denver's three wins — and the Broncos punted the ball back to Baltimore with Tucker warming up on the sideline.

Devin Duvernay's 42-yard return set up Tucker for an easy 40-yarder as the first half expired, giving the Ravens a 17-7 halftime lead.

One play after bouncing a short pass to Sammy Watkins, Jackson wound up and hit Brown with the&nbsp;49-yard touchdown pass&nbsp;that put Baltimore ahead for good 14-7 in the second quarter.

Noah Fant caught a 3-yard TD pass from Bridgewater to put Denver on the board and the Ravens responded with a long drive capped by Latavius Murray's&nbsp;11-yard touchdown romp that tied it at 7.

Fant's TD was set up by rookie Javonte Williams' 31-yard run in which he broke five tackles before cornerback Marlon Humphrey finally knocked him down. Williams led the nation in broken tackles last year at North Carolina.

The Ravens had five sacks and middle linebacker Tyus Bowser sacked both Bridgewater and Lock. Broncos rookie safety Caden Sterns had two of Denver's three sacks. Von Miller, the AFC's Defensive Player of the Month in September, shared the other sack with McTelvin Agim.

Miller noted the difficulty of facing Jackson and his big-play passing abilities combined with the Ravens' exotic run packages.

“It’d be refreshing just to play normal football again,” Miller said.

Ravens RT Alejandro Villanueva hobbled off in the third quarter with a knee injury. His replacement, Andre Smith, was flagged for a face mask away from the play that negated TE Mark Andrews' 30-yard TD reception. Bridgewater is the eighth starter to get hurt for the Broncos. The medical staff also was working on rookie CB Patrick Surtain II's upper ribcage in the closing minutes.

Eagle Radio and Chadron State Athletics are hosting their second CSC Sports Road Show this week at The Ridge in Downtown Chadron!&nbsp;

Wednesday, October 6, the CSC Sports&nbsp;Road&nbsp;Show&nbsp;presented by Security First Bank will be held at The Ridge in downtown Chadron offering Eagle fans,&nbsp;Double&nbsp;Q&nbsp;Country&nbsp;listeners and area residents the opportunity to come out and enjoy a Business-After-Hours style evening while getting to visit with CSC coaches, players and fellow fans. This casual, free event will begin at 5:30 pm and run through 7:30 pm with attendees invited to come and go as their schedules allow.

In addition, attendees can watch as Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins will be hosting a one-hour live radio&nbsp;show&nbsp;from 6:00 to 7:00 interviewing guests on 97.5 FM and 105.9 FM.&nbsp; Confirmed guests for this week's radio program include former CSC offensive lineman and NFL player Garrett Gilkey, wrestling head coach Brett Hunter, women's golfer and wrestler Kinsey Smith, and CSC football offensive lineman Jake Norris. 

CSC representatives will likely make&nbsp;appearances&nbsp;during the evening to mingle and visit among the crowd.

Door prizes will be given away during the night including CSC game tickets!

In its first year the CSC Sports&nbsp;Road&nbsp;Show&nbsp;is&nbsp;a once-a-month event that debuted in September and will be held once per month through April of 2022. Double Q County & CSC team up for second radio road show this week in Chadron

&nbsp; Lincoln&nbsp;- In a game that resembled Nebraska's days of dominance in the 1990s, the Big Red buried defending Big Ten West Division champion Northwestern 56-7 on Homecoming at Memorial Stadium on Saturday night. Nebraska improved its record to 3-3 overall and 3-0 at home this season by rolling up 657&nbsp;yards of offense, including 427 yards on the ground and seven rushing touchdowns,&nbsp;while&nbsp;shutting down Northwestern's running game (37 yards, 26 carries). After running one offensive play in the third quarter, the Huskers owned six rushing scores, including three by quarterback&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=42846">Adrian Martinez</a>&nbsp;on its way to a 42-7 lead. The Huskers return to Memorial Stadium next week for another home night game when they play host No. 14 Michigan. The Huskers also honored newly-minted Nebraska Athletics Hall of Fame inductees Jordan Larson, Terry Pettit and Cathy Noth, as well as the 1990 NCAA Semifinal team as part of the Weekend of Champions. Stivrins was strong in her return to the court, finishing with a match-high 11 kills on 15 errorless swings for a .733 night along with three blocks.&nbsp;Madi Kubik&nbsp;matched her with 11 kills on .455 hitting alongside seven digs, and two blocks. DURANGO, Colo. -- October 1, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College&nbsp;volleyball&nbsp;team&nbsp;(3-9, 1-4 RMAC)&nbsp;fell&nbsp;to Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference&nbsp;rival&nbsp;Fort Lewis&nbsp;(2-7, 2-3 RMAC)&nbsp;Friday night, losing set one 25-21, winning set two 25-17, and losing sets three and four&nbsp;25-23 and&nbsp;29-27.&nbsp;

Although the Eagles had a much better hitting percentage (.205) than the Skyhawks (.072), they were&nbsp;overwhelmed by&nbsp;outside hitters&nbsp;Javiana Romero and Chailyn Swenson, who each had four service aces.&nbsp;Fort Lewis finished with&nbsp;a total of&nbsp;14&nbsp;on&nbsp;the night.&nbsp;Swenson also&nbsp;led&nbsp;both teams with 20 kills.&nbsp;

Junior setter&nbsp;Breshawna Kelly&nbsp;was the night's leading setter, who&nbsp;set a career&nbsp;high of&nbsp;27 assists.&nbsp;She and&nbsp;Devyn Volz&nbsp;(15 assists)&nbsp;accounted for&nbsp;all&nbsp;the Eagles' 42 assists.&nbsp;&nbsp;

If you play the lottery, your chances of winning the Mega Millions are about 1 in three-hundred million.&nbsp; It's a little better for Powerball,&nbsp; about 1&nbsp; in two hundred ninety million.&nbsp; Your chances of a hole in one in golf,  around 1 in 32,000 on a par 3 hole,&nbsp; but for a par 4 hole...try 1 in 6 million!   Maybe Connor Weingart should buy a lottery ticket.  

Connor is a 2011 graduate of Alliance High School and is currently employed with Butler Ag Equipment in Chadron.&nbsp; He played on the AHS golf team as a freshman and sophomore,  then went out for Track his junior and senior year.&nbsp; In fact.. He is the Bulldog school record holder in the Shot Put at 54'1".&nbsp; He was also an All Western Conference football player.  But Connor has always enjoyed playing golf ...mostly for fun with friends and family...and he plays in a lot of local tournaments around western Nebraska....but last week,&nbsp; while playing with his sister Kylan and her husband Trace Armstrong,&nbsp; Connor accomplished somthing very rare....a hole in one, on a par 4 hole. 

The trio was playing at Ridgeview Country Club in Chadron,  Connor says he was not having a good round coming up on Hole #5,  370 yards,  with  a dog-leg and a lot of trees to the right...."it's a kind of blind shot..."you don't really know what line to take".  "So I got to the tee and hit it...and I said.."oh man, that's a pretty good line...and my brother in law said..."Shoot...you might have killed someone!"&nbsp; &nbsp;Connor says,&nbsp; "There was a group in front of us and we couldn't really see where they were".&nbsp; So then the fun begins......"We get up there and we're looking all around"...the group ahead of them and already teed off on the next hole, and they said,   "Well,&nbsp; we heard somthing hit by the green...."so we're looking around and couldn't find anything"......"my Sister just walked up to the green as a joke"...."then all of a sudden she put her hands to her head and said..."Oh my God,&nbsp; Connor...it's in the hole! ... "I didn't believe her, so I walk up and sure enough,&nbsp; my yellow Callaway ball was sitting in the hole"!&nbsp; &nbsp;Connor says there was a large divot on the right hand side and there's a little hill..."the ball must have hit the top of the hill and just trickled right into the hole."  

Connor says he can drive the ball 300 plus yards consistantly and that he is known to "hit the long ball".&nbsp; This is his first hole in one.&nbsp; He has come close on some par 3's and has made the green on some par 4's, but never a hole in one until now.&nbsp; &nbsp;The tradition has always been,&nbsp; if you get a hole in one,  you buy a round of drinks in the clubhouse.&nbsp; Conner says he got off fairly cheap, because there were not a lot of people playing,&nbsp; but a couple friends came out to help him celebrate. 

Connor says he hopes to keep playing golf for as long as the weather allows this year and this will be a life long..."One in a Million"...memory.

The Chadron State College golf team charged up the team leaderboard on account of a new school record, single-round team score on the final day of the Mustang Invite at Marshall Golf Club in Minnesota. The Eagles' 306 strokes undercut the previous record, set at last season's RJGA Palm Valley Classic in April, by five strokes to jump from seventh place on day one to 4th of 10 teams. The team's two-round tournament score of 626 was one stroke above the school record for 36 holes. "The ladies played great on day two," said Head CSC Golf Coach John Ritzen. "I'm proud of how they bounced back and improved today. The school record will give us a good goal to shoot for moving forward. This course played similar to Pueblo Country Club, so hopefully we can keep the good play going through our next tournament there." Junior&nbsp;Alpine Hickstein&nbsp;was one stroke from her own program record for individual tournament score, finishing at 151 after rounds of 78 on Monday and one-over-par 73 on Tuesday. She improved her placing from tied for 11th to 4th individually, out of 64 golfers. All four of CSC's other student-athletes who competed for team scores claimed new personal bests. Sophomore&nbsp;Brooke Kramer&nbsp;shot a 156 to best her own low score of 161. She tied for 11th, with only 1 hole in 36 more than one-over-par. <a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=8040">Kinsey Smith</a>, another sophomore, finished tied for 21st. She was two under her career best, firing 159 in two rounds. Among the four golfers who scored both days was sophomore&nbsp;Allison Acosta, who earned a tie for 24th by carding 161, which was two under her career low. Finally, sophomore&nbsp;Kenzey Kanno&nbsp;set a new personal best by one stroke, finishing at 164 for 34th place. Junior&nbsp;Jordan Grasis, playing as an individual, had a good tournament as well, putting up her second best career 36-hole score, by a single stroke, and tying for 19th with 158 strokes. Augustana University won the team title recording 299-304-603. The Vikings' Molly Stevens was the individual winner, scoring 69-73-142 to earn a meet record. CSC golf sets new team record at Minnesota tournament

DENVER (AP) — New York Jets rookie quarterback Zach Wilson knew these lumps, hits and sacks were just part of the territory as he learns the ropes in the NFL. But this was another tough day for Wilson as he was sacked five times and threw two interceptions in a 26-0 loss to the Denver Broncos. The Jets dropped to 0-3 as they finished with just 162 yards and had more punts than red zone trips. They’ve now gone from scoring 14 points at Carolina in the opener to six against New England last weekend to being blanked by Von Miller and the Denver defense.

Broncos shut out Jets 26-0 to carry forward undefeated start to season

&nbsp; GRAND JUNCTION, Colorado -- September 25, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College football team was one touchdown shy of a comeback on Saturday in Grand Junction, Colorado, losing a close one 24-17 to the Colorado Mesa University Mavericks. CSC fell to 1-3 on the season, and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mesa improved to 3-0 (2-0 RMAC). "We were in the game at the end," said CSC Head Football Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=503">Jay Long</a>. "We just have to find a way to get it in the endzone. We were moving the ball up and down the field, but we weren't finishing our drives. We gave up two drives that we'd like to have back, and the defense played well, but we've got to find that endzone. The CMU defense used quarterback pressure and turnovers to spoil what was otherwise a productive day for the CSC offensive unit. Six times the Eagles advanced the ball into opponent territory and left without points, due to a combination of big plays by the other side and missed field goals. CSC outgained its opponent 402 yards to 327 on the field, but came up short on the scoreboard. Despite winning time of possession by seven minutes in the first half, and outgaining its opponent 190 yards to 145, CSC only managed three points in the first 30 minutes. The Eagles opened up scoring at 11:34 in the first quarter, when a 39-yard field goal by&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7947">Gunnar Jones</a>&nbsp;capped the opening possession of the game. When a Chadron State drive stalled on a pair of penalties in the second quarter, CMU capitalized, driving from its own 36. A 29-yard completion from Karst Hunter to Elijah Lilly was the longest play of the first half, by either team, and took the Mavericks inside the Eagles' red zone. Four plays later, Lionell McConnell walked into the endzone on a sideline pass from Hunter to give CMU a 7-3 lead. Driving late in the second quarter, CSC linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6724">Joey Geil</a>&nbsp;blitzed Hunter on consecutive second and third down plays to force incompletions, forcing a 42-yard field goal try, which was good, by Mesa kicker Lucas Ruiz Diaz. The Mavericks took a 10-3 lead into halftime. A botched fake punt attempt by Mesa inside its own 20 gave the Eagles a short field, midway through the third quarter, however CSC was unable to convert it into points. Following the takeover by the Eagles, their offense was forced off the field without a first down for the first time in the game, and Jones missed his second field goal attempt of the day. On the ensuing possession, Colorado Mesa found a spark on offense. The Mavericks registered first downs on their first two plays, before Avian Thomas rushed down the sideline for 50 yards and a score, putting the Mavericks up 17-3 at 5:36 in the third. The Eagles got a spark of their own on a 41-yard strike from CSC's&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6739">Dalton Holst</a>&nbsp;to receiver&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6799">Jahani Wright</a>, but the Mavericks answered with a 79-yard touchdown drive, with CMU's Dwight Blakey punching the ball in the endzone as the third quarter expired to make it 24-10 Mesa. Twice in the fourth quarter CSC was thwarted in CMU territory. Two minutes in, Torren Calhoun forced a sack fumble at the Mesa 47, and it was recovered by the Mavericks' Kaden Stewart. With five minutes remaining, Mesa's Damar'ren Mitchell picked off a Holst pass at the CMU three-yard line. Chadron State finally found the endzone again with 2:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. CSC fell to 1-3 on the season, and 1-2 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, while Mesa improved to 3-0 (2-0 RMAC). "We were in the game at the end," said CSC Head Football Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=503">Jay Long</a>. "We just have to find a way to get it in the endzone. We were moving the ball up and down the field, but we weren't finishing our drives. We gave up two drives that we'd like to have back, and the defense played well, but we've got to find that endzone. The CMU defense used quarterback pressure and turnovers to spoil what was otherwise a productive day for the CSC offensive unit. Six times the Eagles advanced the ball into opponent territory and left without points, due to a combination of big plays by the other side and missed field goals. CSC outgained its opponent 402 yards to 327 on the field, but came up short on the scoreboard. Despite winning time of possession by seven minutes in the first half, and outgaining its opponent 190 yards to 145, CSC only managed three points in the first 30 minutes. The Eagles opened up scoring at 11:34 in the first quarter, when a 39-yard field goal by&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=7947">Gunnar Jones</a>&nbsp;capped the opening possession of the game. When a Chadron State drive stalled on a pair of penalties in the second quarter, CMU capitalized, driving from its own 36. A 29-yard completion from Karst Hunter to Elijah Lilly was the longest play of the first half, by either team, and took the Mavericks inside the Eagles' red zone. Four plays later, Lionell McConnell walked into the endzone on a sideline pass from Hunter to give CMU a 7-3 lead. Driving late in the second quarter, CSC linebacker&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=6724">Joey Geil</a>&nbsp;blitzed Hunter on consecutive second and third down plays to force incompletions, forcing a 42-yard field goal try, which was good, by Mesa kicker Lucas Ruiz Diaz. The Mavericks took a 10-3 lead into halftime. A botched fake punt attempt by Mesa inside its own 20 gave the Eagles a short field, midway through the third quarter, however CSC was unable to convert it into points. Following the takeover by the Eagles, their offense was forced off the field without a first down for the first time in the game, and Jones missed his second field goal attempt of the day. On the ensuing possession, Colorado Mesa found a spark on offense. The Mavericks registered first downs on their first two plays, before Avian Thomas rushed down the sideline for 50 yards and a score, putting the Mavericks up 17-3 at 5:36 in the third.
