Chadron State opening up Chicoine Center to fans for Tuesday's games

Alliance sisters,&nbsp; Shelby and Ashley Carr, recently competed&nbsp; in the first round of qualification for the American Legion Junior Air Rifle National Championship Tournament.&nbsp; Shelby is a Senior at Alliance High School and Ashley is an 8th grader at Alliance Middle School. They are the daughters of Kari and Josh Carr of Alliance.

Qualifing was held in Alliance on January 16.&nbsp; Shooters utilize a&nbsp; .177 caliber air rifle and fire 20 record shots in 20 minutes from the prone position.&nbsp; 20 record shots, in 25 minutes,&nbsp; in the standing position and 20 record shots, in 20 minutes, in the kneeling position.&nbsp; The targets are 10 meters from the firing line.&nbsp; &nbsp;After completing the three rounds of firing, Shelby's score qualified her to move on to the 2nd round of local qualifications.&nbsp; &nbsp;Alliance American Post #7&nbsp; Commander, Steve Stanec says ..."these will be held in Alliance in late March or early April at a time to be determined."&nbsp;

The Suns played without All-Star guard Devin Booker for the first time this season. Averaging a team-high 22.9 points, he hurt his left hamstring Friday.

Lexi Sun&nbsp;had 11 kills, seven digs and three blocks to lead the Huskers (2-0), who&nbsp;opened a season with back-to-back sweeps for the first time since 2015.&nbsp;Madi Kubik&nbsp;had eight kills and seven digs, and&nbsp;Riley Zuhn&nbsp;had eight kills and three blocks while hitting .316.&nbsp; Lauren Stivrins&nbsp;turned in an efficient performance with seven kills on .429 hitting to go with six blocks. She tied teammate&nbsp;Callie Schwarzenbach&nbsp;for the team high in blocks, as Schwarzenbach produced six blocks with four kills.&nbsp; Nicklin Hames&nbsp;had 31 assists and eight digs as Nebraska hit .228 for the match. The Big Red turned in a stellar defensive effort, holding Indiana to .048 hitting, thanks in part to 12 blocks and 43 digs.&nbsp; Libero&nbsp;Kenzie Knuckles&nbsp;had a team-high 12 digs and added three set assists.&nbsp;The Huskers served four aces to two for Indiana. ATLANTA (AP) — Hank Aaron, who endured racist threats with stoic dignity during his pursuit of Babe Ruth but went on to break the career home run record in the pre-steroids era, died early Friday. He was 86

The Atlanta Braves said Aaron died peacefully in his sleep. No cause of death was given.

Aaron made his last public appearance less than two weeks ago when he received the COVID-19 vaccine.

“Hammerin’ Hank” set a wide array of career hitting records during a 23-year career spent mostly with the Milwaukee and Atlanta Braves, including RBIs, extra-base hits and total bases.

But the Hall of Famer will be remembered for one swing above all others, the one that made him baseball’s home-run king.

It was a title he would hold for more than 33 years, a period in which the Hammer slowly but surely claimed his rightful place as one of America’s most iconic sporting figures, a true national treasure worthy of mention in the same breath with Ruth or Ali or Jordan.

The Nebraska School Activities Association announced Thursday, that the Girls and Boys State Basketball Tournaments will remain in Lincoln, and will be a 5 day format this season.&nbsp; &nbsp;The Girls tournament is scheduled to run March 2 through 6 with the Boys Championships running March 9 through 13.&nbsp; All games this year will be played at Pinnacle Bank Arena and at Lincoln Public School venues. The Bob Devaney Center will not be used, due to the University of Nebraska Volleyball team playing their season this spring.&nbsp; This change was made to limit the number of games played in single locations to help with Covid-19 social distancing protocols.&nbsp;

The 5 day format will have 2 -Class B and 4 -Class A games at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Tuesday. 

Wednesday... All Class C1 and 2 Class B games at PBA,&nbsp; and all&nbsp; Class C2, D1 and D2, first round games played at Lincoln Public School sites.

Thursday...Class D2, D1 and C2 Semi-finals at Pinnacle Bank Arena

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- January 21, 2021 --&nbsp;Just when it seemed as though Chadron State College's wrestling team might outlast visiting Colorado Mesa University on Thursday evening in the Chicoine Center, the visitors surprised the Eagles with four straight wins by fall to claim a 34-12 team victory in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference dual meet in front of around 250 CSC students, staff, faculty, and parents. The Eagles gained a 6-0 advantage when the dual began at heavyweight. There, CSC sophomore&nbsp;Mason Watt&nbsp;earned his team six points when his opponent defaulted due to injury. The next two bouts, at 133 pounds and 141, tied the match up, when Mesa wrestlers earned simple decisions of 7-0 and 7-3. Chadron State retook the lead at 12-10 when&nbsp;Sebastian Robles&nbsp;won 3-2 at 149 pounds, and&nbsp;Preston Renner&nbsp;scored the Eagles' largest decision of the evening, winning 7-3 at 157 pounds. Four consecutive CSC wrestlers then lost matches by getting caught in pins. Among them were returning national qualifer&nbsp;Tate Allison, last weekend's RMAC Wrestler of the Week nominee&nbsp;Rowdy Pfeil, and&nbsp;Eli Hinojosa, who boasted the second best record on the team in 2019-20. The Eagles fell to 0-2 (0-1 RMAC) while Colorado Mesa improved to 2-1, all in the league rotation. CSC will depart on Friday for the Midwest Duals in Kearney, where it will meet up with No. 10 Adams State for a makeup of the canceled January 7 dual. The team will also face No. 23 Newman, as well as Central Missouri.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Mesa pins way to victory at Chadron State

&nbsp; RAPID CITY, S.D. -- January 21, 2021 --&nbsp;Kolten Mortensen, a 6-foot-8 junior, nailed a 3-pointer with less than a second remaining in overtime to give South Dakota Mines a 60-59 victory over Chadron State in the King Center in Rapid City on Thursday night in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action. The Hardrockers are now 5-4 for the season and Chadron State is 3-4. Although both teams were below par offensively, the game was a nail-biter most of the way. Chadron State's biggest lead was 6-2 after four minutes had been played.&nbsp; The Hardrockers' biggest lead was 32-24 at halftime after they tallied nine of the final 12 points in the half. The Eagles opened the second half with a 7-0 run to get back in the game.&nbsp; Mines went ahead 51-46 with a follow shot by Brannagh Walsh with 1:50 to play, but Chadron State tied the score on a 3-pointer by&nbsp;Brady Delimont&nbsp;and a turning jump shot by&nbsp;Deundra Roberson&nbsp;in the final minute. The Hardrockers had a chance to win the game down the stretch, but missed a free throw and a dunk attempt, to send it into overtime. Chadron State took a 58-55 lead with 25 seconds left when&nbsp;Psalm Maduakor&nbsp;grabbed his 10th rebound of the game after a teammate missed a free throw, was fouled and made both of his shots from the line. The Hardrockers' Alejandro Rama immediately dribbled the length of the floor for a layup.&nbsp; With 12.6 seconds left, Chadron State's Teddy Parham, the game's leading scorer with 24 points, was fouled.&nbsp; He made the first free shot, but missed the second.&nbsp; The Hardrockers got that rebound, and at the other end of the court, found Mortensen open on the left wing for his winning trey. Mortensen led the Hardrockers with 16 points while Rama tallied 14 and both Wilfred Dickson and Brevin Walter added eight. Jokic also had six assists before taking a seat on the bench with the other starters for the fourth quarter after helping Denver build a big lead. Reserve Monte Morris added 15 points and Paul Millsap finished with 13 points and 12 rebounds to help Nuggets knock off the Thunder at home for the sixth straight time. Luguentz Dort kept the Thunder close early by scoring 15 of his 20 points in the first half.

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- January 19, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College basketball teams are due to visit South Dakota Mines in Rapid City on Thursday evening and then play at home on Tuesday, Jan. 26 against Black Hills State to make up for the games that were postponed on Tuesday, Jan. 19. Both double-headers are to tip off at 5:30. The Lady Hardrockers are 3-6 after losing to Colorado Mines at home last Saturday night 66-52 despite the fact their top gun, Ryan Weiss, a 5-9 junior, hit five 3-pointers while scoring 17 points. Weiss is averaging 17.5 points and 6.8 rebounds The Mines women lost to all four of the Denver-area teams--Colorado Mines, Regis, Metro State and Colorado Christian--on the road in December.&nbsp; Their wins have been over Adams State 70-57 and Western Colorado 72-68 the next night after the Hardrockers had lost to the Lady Mountaineers 79-72 in early January. Both games were played in Gunnison. The Rapid City team also was to play at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., during that trip, but the Skyhawks forfeited because of&nbsp;COVID issues on their roster. The Mines men are 4-4 after edging Regis 74-70 last Friday night in Rapid City. It was the Hardrockers' first home game. Their other wins were over Adams State and Colorado Christian in December and Fort Lewis 84-79 in overtime in early January. Coached by Chadron State graduate Eric Glenn, the Hardrockers have numerous new players this year. Their top scorer is Wilfred Dickson, a 6-4 senior from New Zealand who is shooting 45.5 percent from the field and averaging 12.5 points. Brevin Walter, a 6-4 redshirt freshman, and Alejandro Rama, a 6-1 sophomore who was a standout at Red Cloud High near Pine Ridge, are both averaging about 10.5 points.&nbsp; Rama had 24 points in the overtime win at Fort Lewis. Both Black Hills State teams are to play at South Dakota Mines on Saturday night before visiting CSC. The Black Hills women are 6-3. They lost their season opener at Western Colorado and won six games in a row before losing at Colorado Mesa 65-58 on Jan. 9 and to Western Colorado 70-61 in overtime at home on Saturday night. Their standout is 5-9 senior Racquel Wientjes, who is averaging 23 points and 6 rebounds. She has tallied at least 28 points four times this winter. Morgan Ham, a 6-1 senior, is averaging 16 points.&nbsp; The Black Hills men haven't played since Jan. 4 when they lost 85-83 in overtime to 8-0 Colorado Mines in Spearfish. Joel Scott, a 6-7 sophomore is averaging 17.5 points and Trey Whitley, a 6-1 senior, is averaging 14.5 for the Jackets. The Chadron State men have added two players recently.&nbsp; They are&nbsp;Deundra Roberson, a 6-footer from Columbia Heights, Minn., and 6-4&nbsp;Bryant Jefferson&nbsp;from Palo Alto, Calif. Roberson made a huge contribution during the Eagles' 85-73 win over Western Colorado on Friday night by making seven of nine field goal shots, three of them 3-pointers, while scoring 18 points. He averaged 20.7 points and was an all-region choice while playing at North Iowa Area Community College at Mason City in 2019-20. Jefferson made his only field goal attempt and added a free throw Friday night, and appears capable of giving the Eagles some depth in the front line.&nbsp; He formerly played at College of San Mateo in California. The Eagles now have three Jeffersons on the team--leading scorer&nbsp;Jacob Jefferson&nbsp;of Buckeye, Ariz., point guard&nbsp;Marcus Jefferson&nbsp;of Lewisville, Texas, and&nbsp;Bryant Jefferson. Both double-headers are to tip off at 5:30. The Lady Hardrockers are 3-6 after losing to Colorado Mines at home last Saturday night 66-52 despite the fact their top gun, Ryan Weiss, a 5-9 junior, hit five 3-pointers while scoring 17 points. Weiss is averaging 17.5 points and 6.8 rebounds The Mines women lost to all four of the Denver-area teams--Colorado Mines, Regis, Metro State and Colorado Christian--on the road in December.&nbsp; Their wins have been over Adams State 70-57 and Western Colorado 72-68 the next night after the Hardrockers had lost to the Lady Mountaineers 79-72 in early January. Both games were played in Gunnison. The Rapid City team also was to play at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colo., during that trip, but the Skyhawks forfeited because of&nbsp;COVID issues on their roster. The Mines men are 4-4 after edging Regis 74-70 last Friday night in Rapid City. It was the Hardrockers' first home game. Their other wins were over Adams State and Colorado Christian in December and Fort Lewis 84-79 in overtime in early January. Coached by Chadron State graduate Eric Glenn, the Hardrockers have numerous new players this year. Their top scorer is Wilfred Dickson, a 6-4 senior from New Zealand who is shooting 45.5 percent from the field and averaging 12.5 points. Brevin Walter, a 6-4 redshirt freshman, and Alejandro Rama, a 6-1 sophomore who was a standout at Red Cloud High near Pine Ridge, are both averaging about 10.5 points.&nbsp; Rama had 24 points in the overtime win at Fort Lewis. Both Black Hills State teams are to play at South Dakota Mines on Saturday night before visiting CSC. The Black Hills women are 6-3. They lost their season opener at Western Colorado and won six games in a row before losing at Colorado Mesa 65-58 on Jan. 9 and to Western Colorado 70-61 in overtime at home on Saturday night. Their standout is 5-9 senior Racquel Wientjes, who is averaging 23 points and 6 rebounds. She has tallied at least 28 points four times this winter. Morgan Ham, a 6-1 senior, is averaging 16 points.&nbsp; The Black Hills men haven't played since Jan. 4 when they lost 85-83 in overtime to 8-0 Colorado Mines in Spearfish. Joel Scott, a 6-7 sophomore is averaging 17.5 points and Trey Whitley, a 6-1 senior, is averaging 14.5 for the Jackets. &nbsp; Lincoln – The University of Nebraska men's basketball program will continue to pause team activities for a minimum of seven more days due to additional positive COVID-19 results among its Tier 1 personnel. Tier 1 personnel include student athletes, coaches and any staff member whose job requires close regular contact. As of testing results through Saturday, Nebraska is in the Red/Red threshold in the Big Ten Conference guidelines for both Team Positivity Rate and Population Positivity Rate. Under those conditions, the team will extend its pause on regular practice and competition for a minimum of seven days. Currently, a total of 12 individuals in the MBB program, including seven players and Head Coach&nbsp;Fred Hoiberg, are in isolation or quarantine due to positive test results per CDC, Big Ten and Lincoln Lancaster County Health Department guidelines. &nbsp;Based on testing results through the latest round of testing, at least 30 percent of Tier 1 personnel has been confirmed positive in the last seven days. Due to the extension of the pause, the Huskers' home game against Minnesota (Jan. 20) and contest at Iowa (Jan. 24) have been postponed. The institutions will work with the Big Ten Conference to identify rescheduling options. At this time, no determination has been made on how the pause may impact scheduled games beyond Jan. 24. We will also conduct all the necessary procedures included in the Big Ten Conference protocols. Consistent with all of our athletic programs, we report any positive test result to the University, and it is included in its daily reports to the Lancaster County Health Department.&nbsp;&nbsp;
