NORFOLK, Neb. (AP) — Norfolk Public Schools will be on probation for the rest of the school year after racial slurs were yelled at players from Omaha Northwest's girls basketball game earlier this month. 

The Nebraska School Activities Association concluded its investigation Thursday. 

The school district is implementing several measures in response to the incident on Feb. 12. 

The steps include issuing a formal apology to Omaha Public Schools, changing seating arrangements at activities and developing an equity and diversity plan. 

School officials were not able to determine who was responsible for the slurs. 

If another incident occurs before the end of the school year, more sanctions would be imposed.

When the two teams last met, in Chadron on December 12, the game required two overtime periods to result in a 77-68 win for the Mavericks, who were then ranked No. 22. The Mesa win was its fourth in an 11-0 start. The Mavs' only loss came on January 30, at Western Colorado, and since then they managed to win seven more games including a win on the road at Colorado School of Mines, then the No. 1 team in NCAA Division II. They finished the season on Saturday at 18-1, all in conference action. Tuesday's game in Grand Junction will be CSC's second top-five matchup this season, after it played Mines when the Orediggers were ranked fourth. &nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- February 23, 2021 --&nbsp;After downing South Dakota Mines 63-60 on Saturday night, the Chadron State men's basketball team will strive to wrap up the regular season with more wins by stopping Metro State and Colorado Christian in the Denver area this weekend. Now 5-5 for the season, Coach&nbsp;Shane Paben&nbsp;and his players hope a 7-5 record will be sufficient to get them into the RMAC playoffs that begin next week.&nbsp; It also would be the Eagles' first winning season since 2001-02. Thinking about first things first, it's anticipated the Eagles will have to play extra well to get a victory at Metro State on Friday night.&nbsp; The Roadrunners are 8-6 overall and 8-5 in the conference after winning their last four games. Metro was slated to play in Chadron on January 30, but the Eagles had to cancel because of COVID issues. Four Roadrunners are averaging in double figures, led by 6-foot-6 junior Mavrick Gildyard at 14.4 points.&nbsp; He's followed closely by Kobe Sanders, a 5-11 freshman, at 12.5 a game.&nbsp; Sanders poured in 32 points in Metro's most recent game, a 108-71 verdict over Colorado State-Pueblo. Another Metro force is Laolu Oke, a 6-8 sophomore who is averaging 10.8 points and 11.8 rebounds, the best in the RMAC by more than four a game. The Colorado Christian men have won just one of their 14 games.&nbsp; That was by 84-79 over Fort Lewis in December.&nbsp; But the Cougars have some firepower. Ross Williams, a 5-10 junior is averaging 20 points, 6-4 senior Andy Stafford is averaging 17.1 and 5-11 junior D.J. McDonald is at 15 a game. Paben was naturally pleased with the hard-earned victory over South Dakota Mines. "It's always fun to win," he said. "We had a good effort and that's what it took. We know we'll need to win these last two games to make the playoffs, but that's a good problem." Coach relishes "must win" playoff scenario heading into final RMAC weekend

LOS ANGELES (AP) — In a career filled with remarkable comebacks, Tiger Woods faces perhaps his toughest recovery of all.

The golf star was driving alone on a sweeping, downhill stretch of road through coastal Los Angeles suburbs when his SUV struck a raised median, crossed into oncoming lanes and flipped several times. The crash caused “significant” injuries to Woods’ right leg, and he underwent what was described as a “long surgical procedure” at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Anish Mahajan, chief medical officer, said Woods shattered bones in his lower leg in multiple places. Some of his fractures went through the skin and were stabilized by a rod, while screws and pins were used for his ankle and foot injuries.

A statement on Woods’&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TigerWoods/status/1364447580520738820" target="_blank">Twitter account</a>&nbsp;said he was awake and recovering.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was the first to arrive after a neighbor called 911.

Police said there was no evidence of drugs or alcohol. Sheriff Alex Villanueva said Wednesday on a Facebook livestream that it was “purely an accident” on a downhill section of road known for crashes.

Dr. Joseph Patterson, an orthopedic trauma surgeon at Keck Medicine of USC in Los Angeles, said injuries like Woods’ are among the most common seen in emergency rooms.

Patterson didn’t treat Woods and wouldn’t comment specifically about the golfer’s injuries but said the risk of infection is extremely high for patients with fractures that break the skin.

“Tissue can be exposed to bacteria, dirt and clothing. The outcomes can be a lot worse if that tissue gets infected,” Patterson said. Such open fractures can require multiple surgeries to repair.

Washington Football Team quarterback Alex Smith suffered an open fracture to his lower leg while being tackled. He nearly lost the leg due to infection but made a remarkable recovery and played last season.

The crash was the latest setback for Woods, who at times has looked unstoppable with his 15 major championships and record-tying 82 victories on the PGA Tour. He is among the world’s most recognizable sports figures, and at 45, with a reduced schedule from nine previous surgeries, remains golf’s biggest draw.

He won the 2008 U.S. Open with shredded knee ligaments and two stress fractures in his left leg. His personal life imploded on Thanksgiving weekend in 2009 when he was caught having multiple extramarital affairs and crashed his vehicle near his Florida home. He returned to win his 11th award as PGA Tour player of the year and reach No. 1.

And then after four back surgeries that kept him out of golf for the better part of two years, he won the Masters in April 2019 for the fifth time, a victory that ranks among the great comebacks in the sport.

Now it’s no longer a matter of when he plays again — the Masters is seven weeks away — but if he plays again.

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club. Monday and Tuesday had been set aside for Woods to give golf tips to celebrities on Discovery-owned GOLFTV. A tweet Monday showed him in a cart with comedian David Spade. He also worked with NBA great Dwyane Wade, who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLo-cCgH0H1/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link" target="_blank">posted a video</a>&nbsp;on Instagram.

“It was a great day,” Wade said Tuesday night on Turner Sports, where he is a studio analyst. “And I woke up today so proud to be able to post that moment for the world, like a little snippet of our moment together. And I took a nap, and I woke up to the news. So, you know, just like everybody out there, my thoughts and prayers are all to his loved ones.”

They have come from everywhere — Jack Nicklaus and Michael Jordan, Mike Tyson and former Presidents Barack Obama and Donald Trump. Woods played golf with both presidents, and Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2019.

Woods had a fifth back surgery, a microdiscectomy, on Dec. 23, just three days after he played the PNC Championship with his son Charlie, who now is 12. Woods also has a 13-year-old daughter, Samantha.

Woods was driving his courtesy vehicle from the Genesis Invitational when he crashed. Gonzalez, the deputy, does traffic enforcement on the road and said he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph (129 kph) in the downhill, 45-mph zone. Crashes are common.

Police said Woods was alert as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out. The sheriff says the airbags deployed and the inside of the SUV stayed mostly intact, which “gave him a cushion to survive the crash.”

The crash caused “significant” injuries all down his right leg that featured rods, pins and screws during what was described as a “long surgical procedure” at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Anish Mahajan, the chief medical officer, said Woods shattered tibia and fibula bones on his right leg in multiple locations. Those were stabilized by a rod in the tibia. He said a combination of screws and pins were used to stabilize additional injuries in the ankle and foot.

A statement on his&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/TigerWoods/status/1364447580520738820" target="_blank">Twitter account</a>&nbsp;said he was awake, responsive and recovering.

“I will say that it’s very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive,” said Carlos Gonzalez, the deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department who was the first on the scene after a neighbor called 911.

“As if his body hasn’t endured enough,” Jon Rahm, the No. 2 player in the world, said from the Workday Championship in Florida. “I just hope he can get out of the hospital after recovery and he can still play with his kids and have a normal life.”

Monday and Tuesday had been set aside for Discovery-owned GOLFTV for Woods to give playing tips to celebrities. A tweet Monday showed him in a cart at Rolling Hills Country Club with comedian David Spade. He also worked with NBA great Dwyane Wade, who&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/CLo-cCgH0H1/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link" target="_blank">posted a video</a>&nbsp;to his Instagram account.

The crash happened about 7:15 a.m. as he drove his courtesy vehicle from the Genesis Invitational through the upscale suburbs. Gonzalez says he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph (129 kph) in the 45 mph zone and crashes are common.

Police said Woods was alert as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out. Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the airbags deployed and the inside of the SUV stayed mostly intact, which “gave him a cushion to survive the crash.”

Authorities said they checked for any odor of alcohol or other signs he was under the influence of a substance and found none. They didn’t say how fast he was driving.

This is the third time Woods has been involved in a car investigation. The most notorious was the early morning after Thanksgiving in 2009, when his SUV ran over a fire hydrant and hit a tree. That was the start of shocking revelations that he had been cheating on his wife with multiple women.

WASHINGTON&nbsp; (AP)—The latest federal bill related to college sports would allow athletes to earn money from endorsements, loosen restrictions around transfers and permit players to return to school after entering a professional league’s draft.

The proposed legislation introduced Wednesday by Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., also would require the wealthiest athletic programs to increase spending on long-term medical care for athletes.

“The Amateur Athletes Protection and Compensation Act would create a national standard of guidelines to make certain student athletes can benefit from the use of their name, image and likeness without hurting their eligibility to compete as a student athlete,” Moran said in a statement.

The bill is the fourth to emerge from the Senate since December and second from a Republican. Most recently, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn., introduced a bill narrowly focused on giving college athletes the right to earn money off their names, images and likenesses.

In December, Sens. Cory Booker, D-N.J., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., introduced the College Athlete Bill of Rights, a sweeping proposal that could undercut the NCAA’s ability to govern college sports if passed.

That came after Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Roger Wicker, R-Miss., announced he was sponsoring a bill that opened the door for athletes to be compensated for endorsement and sponsorship deals but largely protected the NCAA’s ability to set its own rules.

Moran’s bill lands somewhere in between the College Athlete Bill of Rights and Wicker’s: broader in scope than the Republican’s, but not potentially disruptive to the status quo in college athletics as the Democrats’.

It would create an independent body to oversee NIL regulations and permit athletes to have agents and give athletes a lifetime undergraduate scholarship.

Moran’s proposal would also make it possible for athletes to enter professional drafts and not lose their college eligibility — as is currently the case — and push schools to cover medical expenses athletes incur after their college careers because of injuries suffered during college competition.

The NCAA was expected to pass new NIL rules in January, but that was put on hold after scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The NCAA is looking for help from Congress in the form of a federal NIL law that would usurp myriad potential state laws working their way through legislatures around the country. Florida’s NIL law is scheduled to go into effect on July 1.

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- February 23, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College softball home-opening doubleheaders, originally scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, will be played instead on Friday and Saturday, in an attempt to avoid the coldest temperatures of the weekend and meet the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference criteria for softball games. CSC hosts the University of Colorado Colorado Springs for a pair of games beginning at noon on Friday, and another starting at 11 a.m. Saturday, as conditions permit. The league requires a "Feels Like" temperature of 25 degrees or greater in order to commence its games. Out of an abundance of caution for student-athlete safety, the gates at CSC Softball Field will be locked during the games, however, spectators may still bring personal seating and view the games from the perimeter of the park. Chadron State will make efforts to accommodate spectators down the left field line of the ballpark. The bleachers behind home plate will remain off-limits, as well as the ballpark restroom facilities. No admission will be charged, and no concessions will be available. Portable restrooms will also be provided. Vehicles will be prohibited on the grassy areas near the outfield, due to the melting snow and grounds conditions. Visitors should park in the softball field parking lot on the east side of the ballpark.&nbsp;&nbsp;

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tiger Woods was seriously injured Tuesday when his SUV crashed into a median, rolled over and ended up on its side on a steep roadway in suburban Los Angeles known for wrecks, authorities said. The golf superstar had to be pulled out through the windshield, and his agent said he was undergoing leg surgery.

Woods was alone in the SUV when it crashed into a raised median shortly before 7:15 a.m., crossed two oncoming lanes and rolled several times, authorities said at a news conference. No other cars were involved. The 45-year-old was alert and able to communicate as firefighters pried open the front windshield to get him out.

The airbags deployed, and the inside of the car stayed basically intact and that "gave him a cushion to survive the crash," Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said. Both of his legs were seriously injured, county Fire Chief Daryl Osby said.

They said there was no immediate evidence that Woods was impaired. Authorities said they checked for any odor of alcohol or other signs he was under the influence of a substance and did not find any. They did not say how fast he was driving.

The crash happened on a sweeping, downhill stretch of a two-lane road through upscale Los Angeles suburbs. Sheriff's Deputy Carlos Gonzalez, who was the first to arrive at the wreck, told reporters that he sometimes catches people topping 80 mph in the 45 mph zone and has seen fatal crashes there.

"I will say that it's very fortunate that Mr. Woods was able to come out of this alive," Gonzalez said.

Woods was in Los Angeles over the weekend as the tournament host of the Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club, where he presented the trophy on Sunday. &nbsp; OKLAHOMA CITY – February 21, 2021 –&nbsp;Chadron State College pitcher&nbsp;Peyton Propp&nbsp;gave up only five hits over seven and one-third innings on Saturday, but the Eagles softball team came away with a disappointing 0-2 record to begin the season in Oklahoma. In a morning game at Bouse Sports Complex in Choctaw, Pittsburg State University, designated the home team, did all its work on offense in the third inning. PSU's Kylee Bohle tripled with one out, and with two down, the Gorillas had runners on the corners after Makenzie Goswick advanced on a hit-by-pitch. Audrey Miller laced a homer to left field to score the trio. Two more runs reached, unearned, on a double by Paxtyn Hayes and a pair of fielding errors which plater her and teammate Keelah Griffith to make the game 5-0, which was also the final score. The Eagles nearly answered in the top of the fourth. They left two in scoring position after&nbsp;Sloane Quijas&nbsp;broke the CSC hitting drought with a single. With a couple of errors by Pittsburg, Quijas found third and&nbsp;Allie Mason&nbsp;made it to second. A strikeout thrown by PSU's Taylor Compton, who finished with nine in six innings in her win, ended the Eagles' hopes of a rally. Compton improved to 1-0. Propp's 10 punchouts doubled her previous career-high of five in the loss, while allowing only four base hits. She is now 0-1 on the season. In the afternoon game, the Eagles moved to Tom Heath Field at Oklahoma Christian University, to play the AFCA 12th-ranked hosts, also dubbed Eagles. CSC once again faced woes at the plate, while OC slapped out 13 hits for a 12-run lead by the third inning, leading to a five-inning abbreviated game at 12-0. Starting pitcher&nbsp;Tia Kohl&nbsp;(0-1) was pelted with five hits in the first inning, and CSC committed both of its two fielding errors in that same frame, as OC got out to a 5-0 start. Starting pitcher&nbsp;Tia Kohl&nbsp;(0-1) was pelted with five hits in the first inning, and CSC committed both of its two fielding errors in that same frame, as OC got out to a 5-0 start. Addison Spears&nbsp;and&nbsp;Bailey Rominger&nbsp;both singled in the second and third innings, respectively, but got little in the way of backup offensively. The home team did the rest of its scoring in the third. Oklahoma Christian, collectively, hit for the cycle with four singles, two doubles, a triple, and a home run in the same inning. The hosts also received one base on balls. Propp entered in the third and struck out one batter in the fourth before the run rule was invoked. Winning pitcher Lindsay Stoeckel (1-0) left after three innings, when the decision criteria was well met. Chadron State is set to play two more games on Monday in Oklahoma, both at Broncho Softball Stadium at the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond. Huskers lose first top-5 battle with Minnesota

&nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- February 18, 2021 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College softball team's season may have been abbreviated last year, but the squad returns fully intact in 2021, with a few additions, ready to return better than ever. The road for the Eagles begins in Oklahoma next week, when it takes them to the Oklahoma City area for four non-conference matchups with Midwestern opponents at the Edmond Regional Festival, hosted by Central Oklahoma, Oklahoma Christian, and Southern Nazarene on three different fields. The Eagles' debut was delayed by a couple of days, due to the winter storm engulfing the South Central U.S., but the hosts are hopeful they can salvage the weekend by moving games to Sunday and Monday, when warmer weather is in the forecast. CSC is led by a quartet of fifth-year players. Three of those – senior&nbsp;Angelica Maples, junior&nbsp;Allie Mason, and senior&nbsp;Ellie Owens&nbsp;– have received starts and playing time since joining the team as freshmen in 2017. The fourth, senior&nbsp;Bailey Rominger, has been a three-year starter since transferring to Chadron State prior to the 2019 season. Beyond those four veterans, the team is young. As many as five spots in the batting order are expected to be filled by freshmen, either true freshmen or "Covid" freshmen who played in 2020 but received an extra year of eligibility due to the season's abrupt ending. "One of our goals for the season," said CSC Head Softball Coach&nbsp;Kaley Ness, "is just to develop our young players. On our roster, 9 of the 21 players are freshmen, so we've got a lot of room to grow. Our expectation is just to get consistency out of them against each opponent we face, no matter how competitive, and get those younger players playing at a higher level by the end of the year." Two juniors and a sophomore should receive the bulk of the innings pitched, at least early on in the season. Leading them is&nbsp;Tia Kohl, a junior transfer from Barton Community College, where she was a conference Co-MVP as a sophomore. Kohl pitched for the Eagles in 2020 and returns for another junior year. The others are&nbsp;Peyton Propp, a sophomore who started 12 games in 2019, and&nbsp;Gabby Russell, a junior with 11 career starts. New to the pitching staff is sophomore transfer&nbsp;Caitlin Lotspeich, who pitched at Feather River College in California, where she went 9-6 with a 3.18 earned runs average as a freshman in 2019. Freshman&nbsp;DeAnna Barrera, last season's ERA leader, will be working to return to academic eligibility this season. Leading off the batting order once again will be sophomore shortshop&nbsp;Bailey Marvel. The speedy infielder le the Eagles last year with a .351 season batting average. She led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in defensive assists and at .980, had the second-highest fielding position in the league, among starters at her position, last season. Her 22 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts, also led the team. The infield is anchored by Mason at first base. Along with Marvel, Coach Ness says the pair is vital to the confidence of the team's pitchers. "Allie brings our pitchers the greatest sense of calm and encouragement," said Ness. At 6-1, Mason has the range to stretch out for almost any defensive throw. In 2018 she was second on the team with 40 base hits. She received a hardship waiver in 2019 to return as a junior in 2020. The other two infielders, second baseman&nbsp;Addison Spears, and third baseman&nbsp;Sloane Quijas, are both "Covid" freshmen. Spears led the team with 21 runs batted in, in 2020, while Quijas was second with 13 runs scored. Two more third basemen on the team are junior&nbsp;Alyx Gragg&nbsp;and freshman&nbsp;Jessie Henchenski. Another second-year freshman will start behind the plate.&nbsp;Mackenzi Kroll&nbsp;began her career last season as a catcher, before finding a spot in right field due to her offense. She hit .328 for the year, with the team's second-best slugging percentage. Potential backups at the catcher position are Rominger and freshman&nbsp;Samantha Conradie. The outfielders are freshman&nbsp;Paige Propp, the senior Owens, and junior&nbsp;Ali Conder, also a Feather River College transfer. Owens returns for her second senior season, and she has started in center field for the bulk of all five seasons. Angelica Maples, another senior, will work to recover from offseason surgery, and she may return to the lineup at some point. Maples has been one of the Eagles' top power hitters. Freshman designated player&nbsp;Micah Stouffer, a local product, is expected to begin the season in the four-hole in the batting order, but Coach Ness said the Eagles may turn to the pitcher, Russell, to fill the role, depending on the situation and who has the hotter bat. "I tell our team all the time," said Ness, "each win this year is going to be a team win. It's always the case that one swing can change a game, but there are a lot of moments that led up to that one. Also, several different players are going to have to be the game-changers at different times." CSC is set to line up for the first time in 2021 on Sunday at 9 a.m. MT, 10 a.m. CT, versus Pittsburg State at the Southern Nazarene campus in Bethany, Oklahoma.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Two juniors and a sophomore should receive the bulk of the innings pitched, at least early on in the season. Leading them is&nbsp;Tia Kohl, a junior transfer from Barton Community College, where she was a conference Co-MVP as a sophomore. Kohl pitched for the Eagles in 2020 and returns for another junior year. The others are&nbsp;Peyton Propp, a sophomore who started 12 games in 2019, and&nbsp;Gabby Russell, a junior with 11 career starts. New to the pitching staff is sophomore transfer&nbsp;Caitlin Lotspeich, who pitched at Feather River College in California, where she went 9-6 with a 3.18 earned runs average as a freshman in 2019. Freshman&nbsp;DeAnna Barrera, last season's ERA leader, will be working to return to academic eligibility this season. Leading off the batting order once again will be sophomore shortshop&nbsp;Bailey Marvel. The speedy infielder le the Eagles last year with a .351 season batting average. She led the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference in defensive assists and at .980, had the second-highest fielding position in the league, among starters at her position, last season. Her 22 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases in 11 attempts, also led the team. The infield is anchored by Mason at first base. Along with Marvel, Coach Ness says the pair is vital to the confidence of the team's pitchers. "Allie brings our pitchers the greatest sense of calm and encouragement," said Ness. At 6-1, Mason has the range to stretch out for almost any defensive throw. In 2018 she was second on the team with 40 base hits. She received a hardship waiver in 2019 to return as a junior in 2020. The other two infielders, second baseman&nbsp;Addison Spears, and third baseman&nbsp;Sloane Quijas, are both "Covid" freshmen. Spears led the team with 21 runs batted in, in 2020, while Quijas was second with 13 runs scored. Two more third basemen on the team are junior&nbsp;Alyx Gragg&nbsp;and freshman&nbsp;Jessie Henchenski. Another second-year freshman will start behind the plate.&nbsp;Mackenzi Kroll&nbsp;began her career last season as a catcher, before finding a spot in right field due to her offense. She hit .328 for the year, with the team's second-best slugging percentage. Potential backups at the catcher position are Rominger and freshman&nbsp;Samantha Conradie. The outfielders are freshman&nbsp;Paige Propp, the senior Owens, and junior&nbsp;Ali Conder, also a Feather River College transfer. Owens returns for her second senior season, and she has started in center field for the bulk of all five seasons. Angelica Maples, another senior, will work to recover from offseason surgery, and she may return to the lineup at some point. Maples has been one of the Eagles' top power hitters. Freshman designated player&nbsp;Micah Stouffer, a local product, is expected to begin the season in the four-hole in the batting order, but Coach Ness said the Eagles may turn to the pitcher, Russell, to fill the role, depending on the situation and who has the hotter bat. "I tell our team all the time," said Ness, "each win this year is going to be a team win. It's always the case that one swing can change a game, but there are a lot of moments that led up to that one. Also, several different players are going to have to be the game-changers at different times." CSC is set to line up for the first time in 2021 on Sunday at 9 a.m. MT, 10 a.m. CT, versus Pittsburg State at the Southern Nazarene campus in Bethany, Oklahoma.&nbsp;&nbsp;
