Celebrate National Cold Brew Day at Scooter’s Coffee® with $1 Medium Cold Brews

CHADRON – More than 450 volunteers signed in and served at 60 jobsites Saturday during Chadron State College’s eleventh annual The Big Event (TBE). The range of volunteers this year expanded beyond CSC students and employees. TBE Graduate Assistant Kinsey Smith said 30 Upward Bound high students participated with their leaders picking up litter at the green space east of Walmart and cleaning up debris in Art Alley between Main Street and Chadron Avenue.

CSC President Ron K. Patterson, his wife, Jenny, and their son, Braylon, helped trim branches at the courthouse with several members of the International Club. Nebraska State College System Chancellor Paul Turman and his wife, Shelly, worked with student-athletes from the men’s and women’s wrestling teams and track and field student-athletes doing maintenance at Camp Norwesca near Chadron State Park.

Other jobsites included planting trees at Briggs Pond, cleaning at the Eagle Theatre, and picking up trash and raking yard debris at various businesses, private residences, and non-profit organizations.

The CSC Education Club returned to the Chadron Intermediate School to prepare 24 garden boxes for planting. The boxes were established in 2018 by The Big Event volunteers, Keep Chadron Beautiful, and the Chadron Public Schools After School program, according to Lorna Eliason, director of the after-school program.

TBE volunteers have been helping maintain the garden boxes and get them ready for planting every year except 2020 due to the pandemic and a couple of other years due snowstorms, Eliason said.

“Our student horticulture club members have started plants in the school and they will transplant their plants into this living, learning laboratory. Then they will harvest and eat healthy foods in the fall when they return to school. We appreciate all the volunteers from the CSC Education Club,” Eliason said.

One of the most elderly supporters of TBE is also outspoken about her appreciation. Maxine Warren, age 103, said she always looks forward to seeing The Big Event students.

Students raked her yard and collected and disposed of leaves and other debris.

Dr. Shaunda French-Collins said Warren’s home has been a TBE jobsite for 11 years.

“I love the college. They always do such a good job in my yard. Gosh, yes. I hate it when college is out and they leave in the summer because I love their excitement,” Warren said. “I just heard from one of the college girls who used to take me shopping years ago. She saw a card she thought was pretty, so she just sent it to me.”

Not all volunteers were currently on campus. December 2023 graduate Faria Viraj flew back from Salt Lake City to volunteer.

“I think the big event is not just about giving, but it is also about gaining. Gaining the pride of having fulfilled a part of one’s civic responsibility. It instills the idea that everyone has a duty to contribute positively to society while reinforcing the importance of active citizenship. It’s about gaining lasting memories and friendships. These memories can shape students’ outlook on life and nourish the trajectory of their lives,” Viraj said.

Another recent CSC graduate, Minh Le, who is completing a graduate Social Work internship at Crest View Care Center was pleased with the event.

“We appreciate the cheer team coming here. It made the residents happy,” Le said.

Sherl Bosch, Activity Director at Crest View, said she was thankful for the CSC Spirit Team performing cheers and dancing for the residents. The students also helped the residents paint their fingernails and make bead bracelets.

“Getting the residents outside for a fun activity on a warm sunny day was greatly appreciated,” Bosch said.

First quarter Keep Alliance Beautiful recycling volume numbers are in! Our KAB patrons in Alliance, Hemingford, Box Butte County, Chadron and beyond made it possible to ship out 197,110 pounds of material during the first three months of 2024.

Nearly every quarter since writing this column I have reported on the volumes handled by our amazing crew and volunteers at the center. Importantly, numbers I cite typically represent what our hauler, Spud, transports to Kimball and Ogallala – not what the volume that we initially collect. A small percentage is either trash or nonrecyclable for our purposes. Also, volume does not count materials on hand waiting to be processed or processed but waiting for the green light to be shipped. Milk jugs have been the most prominent example of the latter this past year or so. Volumes (in pounds) for what we have recorded so far in 2024 are: Cardboard 116,323; #1-7 Plastics 10,410; Steel/Tin Cans 6,405; Aluminum Cans 3,267; Mixed Paper 29,206; Electronics 4,799; Glass 20,752; Hefty Bags 4,358; Paint 1,047; and Other 543.

Milk jugs last appeared on the KAB volumes report in 2022. That year we sent two loads to Sandhill Plastics, Inc. in Kearney: 7,560 in the first quarter and 6,470 in the fourth, totalling 14,030 pounds. A single 9,341-pound shipment made its way to their plant in 2021. KAB still accepts and separates milk jug plastic, known as natural or undyed high-density polyethylene (HDPE), from No. 1-7 plastics. In fact, there are 15 bales stacked at the recycling center averaging in the neighborhood of 650 pounds apiece. So, why wait rather than load what resembles a humongous marshmallow on the next truck?

Among the handful of materials that make money, milk jugs have been one of the most valuable. Often KAB utilizes one of its own trailers. This option has allowed us to see a profit and view the recycling process at Sandhill Plastic first hand. Also, shipments can be timed to zero out milk jug inventory based on our hauling capacity. Another option is to grow a stockpile and pay to have someone else truck a larger collection of bales. Either way, our perspective has been the time taken to sort and process natural HDPE, also a No. 2 plastic, is financially worth the effort with the bonus of knowing it goes to a Nebraska-based company to close the loop.

This past June I offered to haul the eight milk jug bales we had then. I was going to the Keep Nebraska Beautiful Conference in Kearney, just across town from their potential destination. It was ultimately decided not to be practical. We would wait for another opportunity. Days flew by. The possibility of winter weather delayed our next planned attempt until this spring, about a week ago actually. A co-worker and I were excited to see the operation at Sandhills and try our hand at the transport business, if only for a day.

Well, in accordance with the best laid plans of mice and men, what started as dozens of 4x4x4-foot boxes of milk jugs is still waiting for a ride. After the better part of a day loading and securing eight bales onto the same trailer enlisted on previous occasions the wheels shifted out of kilter when moved a few feet. Dixie returned the load to its spot the next day as the trailer reverted to its normal appearance without the weight though it will be checked/repaired before returning to duty.

A road trip may still be in the cards, yet milk jugs are a wild card at KAB. Perhaps, as the school year winds down, we will skip the field trip this time and let someone else carry the load. One way or another I will report our next milk jug volume as we still strive to hit the million-pound mark in 2024.

Keep Alliance Beautiful: Moving Milk Jugs

Chappell, Neb. - Union Pacific is currently investigating what caused a intermodal train to derail Sunday afternoon in Chappell.&nbsp;

According to Union Pacific Spokesperson Meg Siffring, at about 4:00 p.m. CT/3:00 p.m. MT, on April 14, approximately 35 Union Pacific train cars derailed near Highway 385 and Junky Rd in Chappell. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. Traffic was being diverted to I-80 as an alternate route during the time. The west side of Chappell was evacuated but the evacuation was lifted around 7:45 p.m. CT/6:45 p.m. MT according to the Chappell Volunteer Fire Department.&nbsp;

According to Siffring in a written statement to the POST, there were no injuries. Cleanup is underway, and the cause of the derailment is under investigation.&nbsp;

Chappell, Neb. - A Union Pacific Intermodal train derailed Sunday afternoon in the small town of Chappell. The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. US Highway 30 is now open in both directions according to NE 511. The derailment blocked both tracks. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.

Union Pacific crews are on scene working on the cleanup process of the derailment. It is unknown what caused the train to derail, if there are any injuries or fatalities resulting from the derailment at this time. The POST has reached out to Union Pacific and is awaiting a response.&nbsp;

 </figure>Sandhills/North Platte/Panhandle Post&nbsp;Chappell, Neb. - Union Pacific is currently investigating what caused a intermodal train to derail Sunday afternoon in Chappell.&nbsp;According to Union Pacific Spokesperson Meg Siffring, at about 4:00 p.m. CT/3:00 p.m. MT, on April 14, approximately 35 Union Pacific train cars derailed near Highway 385 and Junky Rd in Chappell. The UP train was traveling along the Sidney Subdivision.&nbsp;&nbsp;The train derailment caused US Highway 30 in both directions to close from Lodgepole to US Highway 21 for about 2 hours. Traffic was being diverted to I-80 as an alternate route during the time. The west side of Chappell was evacuated but the evacuation was lifted around 7:45 p.m. CT/6:45 p.m. MT according to the Chappell Volunteer Fire Department.&nbsp;According to Siffring in a written statement to the POST, there were no injuries. APRIL 15, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Nebraska roadways are off to a speedy start to 2024. In the first 100 days of the year, Nebraska State Troopers issued more citations for speeding at over 90 miles per hour and speeding at over 100 miles per hour than any year in the past decade.

So far in 2024, troopers have stopped 289 drivers for speeding at over 100 MPH and 1,385 for over 90 MPH. Those figures represent a 60% increase (100 MPH+) and a 35% increase (90 MPH+) over the previous 10-year average.

“Excessive speeds reduce your reaction time and greatly increase stopping distance,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “It also puts everyone else on the road at risk because other drivers aren’t expected nearby vehicles to approach at such high speeds. Help keep Nebraska roadways safe and slow down.”

At 90 miles per hour, it takes an average vehicle the distance of nearly 600 feet to stop. At 100 miles per hour, that distance increases to nearly 700 feet, which represents well over 2 football fields.

“Excessive speeding ramped up in 2020 during the pandemic, but hasn’t slowed down since,” said Colonel Bolduc. “Our troopers remain vigilant to maintain safe roadways across the state, but traffic safety takes a team effort. Drive safely and slow down.”

As the summer travel season approaches, the Nebraska State Patrol is reminding all motorists to drive safely. Follow posted speed limits, eliminate distractions, drive sober, and buckle up.

NSP issuing more speeding citations in over a decade

The Alliance Recreation Center announces current Interim director, Revé Fries as Executive Director. Revé brings more than 20 years of nonprofit experience serving the communities of Holdrege, Kearney, and Alliance, most recently as the Operations Director at the Alliance Rec Center.

“We are thrilled to have Revé as our executive director,” said Sean Ridgeway, Alliance Recreation Center’s Board President. “Revé has a blend of experience across recreation, wellness, nonprofit service, and leadership, all of which will help us expand our offerings and increase value for our community.”

As Executive Director of the Alliance Recreation Center, Revé will oversee the ARC which is dedicated to unifying and strengthening the community of Alliance. “The Alliance Recreation Center has a significant community role in supporting health and wellbeing for all, and our organization’s future is bright. We have many community partnerships, members, programs, opportunities, and projects that will address some of our community’s most pressing issues. I look forward to applying my passion for community and experience to help the ARC continue to lead positive change,” shares Fries.

Revé has over 20 years’ experience in the recreation, wellness, and nonprofit sector. For the past six years, she has served as the Operations Director for the Alliance Recreation Center. The 2024 Yonts Water Conference, on April 10, hosted representatives from the Goshen Irrigation District and HDR Engineering, who presented an update on the progress of replacing the tunnels on the Goshen and Gering-Fort Laramie Irrigation Districts 129-mile-long mainline canal.&nbsp;

“We’ve selected a contractor, Atkinson Construction, a relatively large full-service construction company that has a focused underground division specifically focused on constructing tunnels in North America. So I think that’s a step in the right direction,” said Corey Foreman, HDR Engineering associate vice president.&nbsp;

HDR and the irrigation districts received many bids. The decision was made to go with Atkinson as they did value engineering. When interviewed in August, they asked questions on designs to reduce cost such as the possible saving of the roof on the tunnel. Atkinson will also do construction sequencing, where the construction will work in sequences, doing the floor first and then each side to move through sections of the tunnel quicker and save costs. It is also a safer method, so there are never people underneath any unsupported materials. The sequential excavation of the old tunnel will be replaced with a new and larger reinforced concrete structure every four feet or so. The tunnel design will be like the old tunnel with increased flow capacity.

“That's ultimately what we're working on today. I'm working with the contractors, and we’re working on a lot of the proposed construction sequencing,” said Foreman.&nbsp;

The failure of Tunnel No. 2 on July 17, 2019, caused a geotechnical risk with hourglass sands, which could lead to increased cost assessment. Atkinson will be on site Monday, April 15, setting up equipment to pull cores from the concrete and behind it. The company has a three-week window to pull cores before they have to pull out and the tunnels fill with water for irrigation. Foreman said they are hopeful this will give them a better idea of cost estimates.&nbsp;

“We want to make sure we evaluate everything because if there's a potential $10 million cost savings. We need to do our due diligence wherever we can find good value to lower that cost,” he said. In May 2023, the cost of both tunnels was $74 million, an inflated mid-point of construction could see the costs rise to $84 million.&nbsp;

Foreman said the timeline for starting and completing both tunnels is in flux. Pending all agencies' approval, the new tunnels' replacement or construction may occur in the fall of 2024. Doing both to finish in one season would mean Atkinson Construction having two back-to-back shifts, which is possible but could be cost-prohibitive. They are also experiencing labor shortages.&nbsp;

Further site investigations, NEPA permitting and documentation and rights-of-way considerations must be completed.&nbsp;

Avid Dischord to get funky at Tipsy Dixie's in Alliance

APRIL 11, 2024 (NORTH PLATTE, NEB.) —Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested a Utah man after locating nearly five pounds of suspected fentanyl pills during a traffic stop in North Platte. Sunday, April 7, at approximately 11:00 p.m., a trooper observed a Kia SUV traveling without headlights or taillights on Jeffers Street north of Interstate 80. During the traffic stop, the trooper became suspicious of criminal activity. 

A search of the vehicle revealed multiple bags containing thousands of suspected fentanyl pills. The total weight of the pills was nearly five pounds. Troopers also located a handgun in the vehicle. 

The driver, Tyrone Cash, 38, of Spanish Fork, Utah, was arrested for possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to deliver, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. He was lodged in Lincoln County.

Growing up on a ranch in the northeastern corner of Wyoming, Williams is one of the proud few hailing from Moorcroft, WY – a town so small it doesn’t need stoplights. Rodeo, wrestling, and academic talents took him first to Casper College, and then to the University of Wyoming. Williams earned several

degrees, including a Master’s in Public Administration, but it was music and the camaraderie of the road that continued to take him all over the United States.

Chancey Williams to perform at 2024 Cattlemen’s Ball

CHADRON – Chadron State College students and employees gathered for the ninth annual Rising Sophomore awards ceremony Wednesday.&nbsp;Dr. Jim Powell, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Chadron State College, was the keynote speaker. He came to CSC in 2015 as the Dean for Assessment, Accreditation, Curriculum, and Education, Human Performance, Counseling, Psychology, and Social Work. Powell, who became the Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2020, is retiring at the end of June.

The following awards were established by the Retention Committee to recognize students who went above and beyond in a variety of categories during their freshman year. Students were either nominated by peers, faculty, or staff.

The Young Eagle:&nbsp;Kylie Seefus of Alexandria, Neb.

This award is given to the rising sophomore who has made significant accomplishments as an identified leader on campus during the current academic year. For this award, leadership is measured by affecting positive change on campus. The James H. This award comes with a $500 scholarship.

Student Peer-Leader of the Year:&nbsp;Reece Ohrtman of Long Valley, S.D.

This award recognizes a rising sophomore who has been an effective peer leader. Peer-leaders play a variety of roles including mentor, teacher, friend, and cheerleader. The recipient of this award uses friendship, experience, expertise, and perspective to promote the individual development of her or his fellow first-year students. In addition, they were nominated by their fellow students.

Resident Hall Citizen of the Year:&nbsp;Austin Glanz of Sidney, Neb.

This award seeks to recognize one rising sophomore (current freshman) from the resident halls for outstanding service to her or his floor. The award recipient will have demonstrated engaged citizenship, including leadership, self-governance, and peer accountability. Therefore, this individual is respectful of all members of the community and/or has positively contributed to the Resident Hall organizations.  </figure>CHADRON – Chadron State College students and employees gathered for the ninth annual Rising Sophomore awards ceremony Wednesday.&nbsp;Dr. Jim Powell, Vice President for Academic Affairs at Chadron State College, was the keynote speaker. He came to CSC in 2015 as the Dean for Assessment, Accreditation, Curriculum, and Education, Human Performance, Counseling, Psychology, and Social Work. Powell, who became the Vice President for Academic Affairs in 2020, is retiring at the end of June.The following awards were established by the Retention Committee to recognize students who went above and beyond in a variety of categories during their freshman year. Students were either nominated by peers, faculty, or staff.The Young Eagle:&nbsp;Kylie Seefus of Alexandria, Neb.This award is given to the rising sophomore who has made significant accomplishments as an identified leader on campus during the current academic year. For this award, leadership is measured by affecting positive change on campus. Specifically, nominees will be given high consideration for having a positive impact on the Chadron State College community.James H. Powell Jr. Academic Achievement:&nbsp;Emily Marin of Chappell, Neb.The James H. Powell Jr. Academic Achievement Award recognizes a rising sophomore who participated in the Transitional Studies Program and has demonstrated excellence within the Transitional Studies courses, programming, and resources to achieve his or her academic goals. This award comes with a $500 scholarship.Student Peer-Leader of the Year:&nbsp;Reece Ohrtman of Long Valley, S.D.This award recognizes a rising sophomore who has been an effective peer leader. Peer-leaders play a variety of roles including mentor, teacher, friend, and cheerleader. The recipient of this award uses friendship, experience, expertise, and perspective to promote the individual development of her or his fellow first-year students. In addition, they were nominated by their fellow students.Resident Hall Citizen of the Year:&nbsp;Austin Glanz of Sidney, Neb.This award seeks to recognize one rising sophomore (current freshman) from the resident halls for outstanding service to her or his floor. The award recipient will have demonstrated engaged citizenship, including leadership, self-governance, and peer accountability. Therefore, this individual is respectful of all members of the community and/or has positively contributed to the Resident Hall organizations. Most importantly, this individual should be a leader and role model for his or her peers and consistently served her or his community to enact positive changes within it.Working Eagle:&nbsp;Jaydlyn Youel of ChadronAward Description: The Working Eagle Award recognizes a rising sophomore who has effectively balanced academics with his or her on- or off-campus job.Unsung Hero:&nbsp;Jayna Moses of Amelia, Neb., and Piper Ryschon of Scottsbluff, Neb.This award recognizes a rising sophomore who works behind the scenes consistently going above and beyond the call of duty.Community Engagement:&nbsp;Cole O’Neal of Riverton, Wyo.This award recognizes the efforts of a rising sophomore who is living out a vision of connections between campus and community through service and giving.Student Leader of the Year:&nbsp;Reece Vinzant of Bertrand, Neb.This award recognizes a rising sophomore who has a zest for life and learning, a strong commitment to CSC and the community and a demonstrated belief in the goodness of all people.Diversity in Thought and Experience:&nbsp;Kolby Mason of Oconto, Neb.This award recognizes a rising sophomore who is a strong and active advocate for diverse communities and challenges and supports students to engage beyond that which is comfortable.&nbsp; Students were nominated by faculty, staff, and their freshman peers.Academic Grit:&nbsp;Ty Young of Loveland, Colo.The Academic Grit Award recognizes a rising sophomore who has made significant steps in his or her academic development. This award recipient will demonstrate noticeable growth in the areas of academic achievement and will have utilized campus resources to have done so.First Generation Eagle:&nbsp;Elizabeth Schlabach of Rapid City, S.D.The First-Generation Eagle Award recognizes a rising sophomore who would be the first in his or her family to attain a 4-year degree when he or she graduates. This award recipient will have successfully navigated the academic, financial, and social aspects of college life.Artist of the Year:&nbsp;Braddley Collins of ChadronThis award recognizes musical, theatrical, writing, or artistic creativity of a rising sophomore at CSC who has made an outstanding contribution to the musical, theater or artistic life of the college through demonstration, performance, composition, and/or group leadership.Student Leadership:&nbsp;Eva McConnell of Hershey, Neb.This award recognizes the efforts of a rising sophomore who has demonstrated excellence in serving as a voice for the student body, campus efforts, and leadership and participation across campus.Student-Athlete of the Year:&nbsp;Mana Chanthasone of Liberal, Kan.This award recognizes a CSC rising sophomore whose work and service on or off the athletic field or gym represents excellence in academics and service.
