As the industry’s safety leader, the North American railway company is currently implementing immersive technology into its mechanical training programs to keep workers safe, utilizing virtual/augmented and mixed realities to enhance safety strategies and improve role readiness amongst the mechanical workforce.

With the help of VR Learning Solutions provider, Roundtable Learning, the training simulations currently being tested with BNSF create training solutions to address risk-specific scenarios to potentially avoid incidents and injuries while on the job. This new initiative upholds BNSF’s standards of innovation, while keeping its commitment for safety front and center.

Built for in-depth exposure to step-by-step processes, the VR program provides experiential learning opportunities for mechanical employees to build their knowledge of the importance of personal protection equipment (PPE), improve risk awareness, and hone seamless lock-out tag-out procedures. Each time employees encounter safety hazards within the VR experience, warnings alert learners to pressurized systems and reinforce safe lifting practices.

LINCOLN, NE –&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen has issued a disaster declaration in the aftermath of a severe storm that resulted in high winds and blizzard conditions on April 6 and 7. The counties included in the declaration are Banner, Cheyenne, Sioux, Garden, Kimball, Morill and Scotts Bluff.

The declaration allows for use of the Governor’s Emergency Fund, established under the authority of the Nebraska Emergency Management Act, to address conditions resulting from the storm. Damage to affected counties is estimated to exceed $5.4 million.

Per Neb. Rev. Stat. §81-829.40(3), the Governor is required to sign a State of Emergency Proclamation before the fund is available for use. The proclamation, effective April 10, is attached.

Governor Pillen Issues Disaster Declaration for Panhandle Counties

The annual Yonts Water Conference, held on Wednesday, April 10, at the UNL Panhandle Research Extension and Education Center in Scottsbluff, updated ag producers on topics from water to weather.&nbsp;

“So, we've seen some improvement early on the snowpack, which was below average. Improvement is in the upper and lower North Platte River Basins, as far as near average snowpack that's allowed our forecast to increase,” said Lyle Myler, area manager for the Bureau of Reclamation Office in Mills, Wyo.

When Reclamation looked at the snowpack and other water supply conditions on April 1, the forecast above Seminole Reservoir was 800,000 acre-feet for the months of April through July.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The contribution from the Sweetwater is 80 thousand acre-feet, and then there is another contribution from the Casper Mountain area, Alcova to Glendo is right around 120,000 acre-feet.&nbsp;

“If you take a look, NRCS (Natural Resources Conservation Service) does a forecast of inflow into Seminole, and they're forecasting 825,000 acre-feet. So just a little bit more than us, and the Corps of Engineers does a forecast for Glendo because they have flood control space operations there, and their forecast is 100,000 acre feet for that Alcova to Glendo reach. But you know, as far as forecasts go, we're right in the neighborhood,” Myler said.&nbsp;

The North Platte numbers look good, and there is above-average carryover storage. When Reclamation calculates whether there'll be an allocation, it looks at a forecast and supply of 1.1 million acre-feet, which has been above that for the last few months.&nbsp;

Myler said the National Weather Service's 90-day outlook for the North Platte River Basin shows a trend for above-average precipitation. “In the Casper area last weekend, we had three to four inches of snow with some rain. So that’s helping us out. The forecast is more wet weather in the high country, where we need the snow for our water supply, so I'm optimistic.”

Myler is cautiously optimistic as things could change, but ag producers should have a full water supply with the carryover supply.&nbsp;

Bureau of Reclamation reports on water outlook for irrigation season

The Alliance Public Schools have been working with the Nebraska Department of Education (NDE), the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS), and local leaders to work on the challenge of school absenteeism.

Since the COVID school shut-down in 2020, most American schools have been facing the problem of chronic absenteeism. Kids got used to using their computers to learn from home - whenever they felt like studying. Chronic absenteeism is a problem in the Alliance Public Schools. That means a student misses 10% or more of the school year, roughly eighteen days.

On Thursday, April 11, state and community leaders will meet with parents and caregivers of K-12 students, with a special focus on 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th-grade students in Alliance Public Schools who have missed 10 or more days of school. Child care, dinner, and translation services will be provided. And raffles and prizes!

On April 12, these leaders will work with school students. All 9th grade students will be involved. Middle school students with ten or more absences will be included.

In the parent meeting, the goal is to understand the largest hurdles to school attendance for kids and better understand any barriers to accessing resources to help families. The discussion will focus on what is at stake - why is school attendance so important? What are the reasons why so many kids in Alliance don’t make it to school? Are there cultural barriers? What are some solutions that would increase regular attendance in our schools?

The student meeting on Friday for grades 6-9 will involve several small group activities and discussions.

Research shows that attendance is an important factor in student achievement. Missing a day of school means missing that opportunity to learn. Students who are chronically absent will fall behind in their classes. They will score lower on tests and fail more courses. They are more likely to drop out of high school.

Hedy Chang, the executive director of Attendance Works, worries the kids missing out on school are the same ones who need it the most. They are more likely to live in poverty, be minorities, or have disabilities. They are not only missing learning opportunities, they are missing benefits like free lunch and check-ups with the school nurse. They are not only missing classes, they are missing activities.

School is a social environment where kids are thrown together. During COVID, students lost the connection to peers. They also lost the connection to caring adults who are not part of their immediate family.

Making the adjustment from classes at home to classes with several kids has been hard for some. They may feel like they don’t belong in school any more or don’t need to be there. Isolation and social media have created stresses for youth. Some cope better than others, and some kids stay home.

Learning in school is not only knowing what is covered in classes like Math, Science, Social Studies, and English. It is also social and emotional learning. Students learn to identify what is important in their lives. They learn to manage their emotions. How do their behaviors affect others? Empathy, caring about others' feelings, develops. Students discover how to express themselves and how to make responsible decisions. And they develop friendships.

We all want our youth to thrive. Their futures should be filled with responsibility, respect, and, most importantly, happiness. Being in school every day is an important first step.

Getting Ahead: Building a culture of school attendance

Most facilities at Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area south of Gering are closed temporarily because of a power outage caused by a windstorm last weekend.

The Wildcat Hills Nature Center and Wildcat Hills Shooting Sports Complex remain closed until power is restored and systems such as water well pumps are brought back online. Water is currently not available.

Tanner Johns to perform in Hay Springs 

Despite overcoming an early four-run deficit, the Huskers' rally came up short in a wild back-and-forth affair, as Nebraska fell 13-11 to Kansas at Hoglund Ballpark on Tuesday night.

Nebraska (22-8) scored 11 runs on 12 hits with two errors, while Kansas (16-14) totaled 13 runs on 13 hits and an error.

Ty Horn started for the Big Red, lasting 1.2 frames while allowing five runs, one earned, on four hits with two strikeouts. Kyle Froehlich, Jackson Brockett and Bobby Olsen each surrendered a pair of runs across a combined 2.1 relief innings.

Evan Borst tossed a scoreless fifth inning, while Casey Daiss allowed an unearned run across two complete innings. Rans Sanders was tagged for a home run in his lone inning of work.

Cole Evans finished 1-for-5 with a grand slam and five RBI, tying a season-high for RBI in a game by a Husker this season. Ben Columbus homered for the first time this season, while Case Sanderson reached in four of five plate appearances.

Dylan Carey and Tyler Stone drove in a combined three runs for the Big Red, while Joshua Overbeek went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs.

Nebraska set the tone early as Overbeek began the ballgame with a leadoff double down the right-field line. Riley Silva advanced Overbeek to third base with a sacrifice bunt, before Evans put the Big Red up 1-0 with an RBI groundout, his 22nd RBI of the season.

Kansas responded with five runs on five hits in the second frame, highlighted by Ben Hartl’s solo home run and a bases-clearing double from Jake English to put the Huskers in a four-run hole.

However, NU quickly erased the deficit after a one-out double from Sanderson paved the way for Stone’s RBI two-bagger to cut the lead to 5-2.

Kansas jumped back in front in the third after plating four more runs on four hits to take a 9-5 lead. CHADRON – Chadron State Park, Randy Kane and Carrie Frahm were announced as the award winners for the second annual tourism industry honors April 4.

The awards were presented at the fourth annual Treasure Chest of the Northwest event, which gathers members of the region’s tourism industry together for networking, a brochure exchange and informational programs. More than 80 industry members attended to watch the awards ceremony and take part in the activities.

Chadron State Park was named Business/Attraction of the Year for the region. Established in 1921, the park attracts an annual visitation of over 400,000 people, providing a significant economic impact to the community all year. Randy Kane, a volunteer at the Museum of the Fur Trade, was recognized for his efforts as Volunteer of the Year. Kane engages visitors to the museum and is knowledgeable about the many Northwest Nebraska historical events. The Frontline Employee of the Year went to Carrie Frahm of Perk Up Java in Crawford for making every visitor feel welcome and sharing information on what there is to see and do in the area with them.

Other nominees for the awards this year included Runza, Wild’s Bar and Grill staff members Cody Kronhofman and Willow Davies and Chadron State Park office manager Debbon Shields.

“One of Northwest Nebraska’s greatest assets is its people, and the tourism industry awards are meant to recognize the people who make it an enjoyable experience to visit the region. All of our nominees and award winners go above and beyond every day, making them tremendous mentors to those around them as we seek to grow the industry,” said Discover Northwest Nebraska Director Kerri Rempp. “Once again, our Treasure Chest workshop was a success as it saw growth over last year. The event is a great opportunity to network with colleagues and prepare for the upcoming tourism season.”

The air we breathe is essential to living a healthy life. Understanding what can affect your air quality can ensure that you are taking all the necessary steps to keep your home and family healthy. This is part two of a three-part series on air quality to help address some common issues that can occur that affect your air indoors and out.

Molds are very common in buildings and homes and can be found indoors and outdoors. Mold can enter your home through open doorways, windows, vents, and heating and air conditioning systems. Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture such as:

· Areas where there are leaks in the roof

Large mold infestations can usually be seen or smelled. Mold growing in homes and buildings indicates that there is a problem with water or moisture. The first problem to address: Removing moldy items from living areas.

Once mold starts to grow in carpet, insulation, ceiling tiles, drywall, or wallboard, the only way to deal with the problem is by removal and replacement. It is important to properly clean and dry the area as you can still have an allergic reaction to parts of the dead mold and mold contamination may recur if there is still a source of moisture.

Here are some quick answers to frequently asked questions on mold:

· Mold is very common in buildings and homes.

· Mold is found both indoors and outdoors.

· Large mold infestations can usually be seen or smelled.

· There is no recommended routine sampling method for mold.

· There are no sampling standards for mold. It can be costly to get a test done and there are not set levels for what is an acceptable quantity.

· If you believe you are ill because of exposure to mold in a building, you should consult your physician to determine if you need to vacate.

Exposure to damp and moldy environments may cause a variety of health effects, or none at all. Some people are more sensitive to mold than others. For these people, exposure to molds can lead to symptoms such as stuffy nose, wheezing, and red or itchy eyes and/or skin. Typically those with allergies are the most sensitive to mold.

Severe reactions may occur among workers exposed to large amounts of mold in occupational settings, such as farmers working around moldy hay. Symptoms may include fever and shortness of breath. There is no blood test for mold. Some physicians can do allergy testing for possible allergies to mold, but no clinically proven tests can pinpoint when or where a particular mold exposure took place.

Mold growth, which often looks like spots, can be many different colors, and can smell musty. Color is not an indication of how dangerous a mold may be. Any mold should be removed and the moisture source that helped it grow should be removed.

If you can see or smell mold, a health risk may be present. You do not need to know the type of mold growing in your home, and there is no recommended test for checking for mold. No matter what type of mold is present, you should remove it.

Mold growth can be removed from hard surfaces with commercial products or a bleach solution of no more than 1 cup (8 ounces) of bleach in 1 gallon of water to kill mold on surfaces. Never mix bleach with ammonia or other household cleaners.

Inside your home you can control mold growth by:

· Controlling humidity levels by keeping it between 30%-50% all day long.

· Promptly fixing leaky roofs, windows, and pipes.

· Thoroughly cleaning and drying after flooding.

· Ventilating shower, laundry, and cooking areas.

PPHD: Mold, Air Quality and Your Health

Penn State used a pair of two-run home runs to rally for a 6-4 victory over the Nebraska softball team in 10 innings Sunday at Bowlin Stadium.

Nebraska took a 4-2 lead into the seventh inning before Penn State tied the game on a two-run homer. The Nittany Lions then took the lead with a two-run homer in the 10th inning.

With the win, Penn State won the series and improved to 28-8 on the year and 7-2 in Big Ten play. Nebraska fell to 23-15 overall and 6-2 in conference play.

Bridget Nemeth (17-1) tossed a complete game for Penn State, allowing five runs on 10 hits in 10.0 innings. Kaylin Kinney (14-10) took the loss for Nebraska, allowing six runs (five earned) in a career-high 9.1 innings.

Nebraska lost despite hitting two home runs off Nemeth, who entered the game having allowed only one home run in 22 appearances and 103.2 innings. The Huskers out-hit the Nittany Lions 10-8 but Nebraska left eight runners on base compared to four runners stranded for Penn State.

Caitlynn Neal led the Husker offense with a 3-for-4 day at the plate that included a home run, two runs scored and three RBIs. Bella Bacon was 2-for-5 and scored twice while Brooke Andrews went 2-for-4 and Peyton Cody hit her third home run of the season.

Penn State took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. A leadoff walk was followed by back-to-back doubles to give the Nittany Lions the lead.&nbsp;

Nebraska answered right back by scoring a pair of two-out runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game. Bacon got the rally started with a two-out double. Neal followed with an RBI single before Katelyn Caneda came through with an RBI double.

The Huskers mounted another two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth. It was Bacon who started the rally again with a two-out single. Neal then launched a two-run homer to right center to give Nebraska a 4-2 lead.

Trailing by two, Penn State got a leadoff double in the top of the seventh inning before Nemeth hit a game-tying two-run homer.

In the bottom of the seventh, Billie Andrews reached on a leadoff error. She advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from her older sister Brooke. Following a strikeout, Samantha Bland was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with two outs but Nemeth escaped the jam with another strikeout.

Neither team got a runner past first base in the eighth or the ninth innings. Then in the top of the 10th, Penn State grabbed the lead with a two-run homer.

Cody hit a two-out home run in the bottom of the 10th to pull the Huskers within one, but that was as close as Nebraska would get.

Nebraska is back in action next weekend, when the Huskers travel to Rutgers for a three-game series on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Homers help PSU get past Huskers

CHADRON – Chadron State College has announced four finalists for the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.csc.edu/president/vice-president-for-academic-affairs/" target="_blank">Vice President for Academic Affairs</a>&nbsp;position. Dr. Jim Powell, who has been the college’s top academic officer since 2020, announced his retirement in November 2023.

The four VPAA finalists to replace Powell are Dr. Theresa Billiot, Dr. Kent Buchanan, Dr. Matthew Redinger, and Dr. Kimberly Paddock-O’Reilly. Each finalist will conduct on-campus interviews with the search committee, meet with President Patterson and the President’s Cabinet, and have discussions with faculty, staff, and student representatives during separate forums this month.

Billiott will interview Tuesday, while Buchanan will interview Thursday. Redinger and Paddock-O’Reilly will interview later in April.

Billiott is currently the Vice President of Academic and Student Affairs at Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell, Oklahoma. Billiott has been in that position since 2022. Prior to joining Panhandle State, Billiott taught marketing and served as chair and assistant dean at Woodbury University in Burbank, California, for three years. She was also a tenured associate professor of marketing at Cameron University in Lawton, Oklahoma, for seven years and an assistant professor of marketing at Fort Hays State for two years.

Outside of higher education, Billiott was a solution manager for Clear Channel Radio and iHeart Media, as well as a new business development executive for the Florida Panthers. Billiott’s bachelor’s degree is in mass communications from Nicholls State University. She has a Master of Arts in Mass Communication and Media Arts degree from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and a Master of Business Administration in Marketing from Florida Atlantic University. She received her Ph.D. in Mass Communication and a Cognate in Marketing from Texas Tech University.

Buchanan most recently served as the Vice President for Academic Affairs at Adams State University from 2020 to 2023. Before working at Adams State, Buhchanan was at Oklahoma City University for 13 years and had a variety of positions. He was the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs for four years, an Assistant Provost and Professor of Biology, and Department Chair while still teaching and advising students. He also worked at Tulane University’s Health Science Center where he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology and the Interdisciplinary Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology. Buchanan also taught and conducted research at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center and the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation.

All three of his degrees were earned in the state of Oklahoma. He has a bachelor’s and a master’s in microbiology from the University of Oklahoma. He earned a Ph.D. in microbiology and immunology from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center.

His Ph.D. in history is from the University of Washington.Paddock-O’Reilly is currently an executive coach at KPL Coaching, a firm she co-founded. Prior to her personal business, Paddock-O’Reilly worked at Logan University in Chesterfield, Missouri, for eight years. She was the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs and Professor, and finally Provost and Professor. Prior to Logan University, Paddock-O’Reilly was the Dean of Online Education and the Associate Vice President for New Programs at Salem University from 2012-14. Paddock-O’Reilly also worked at A.T. Still University in Kirksville, Missouri, for seven years. She was the Dean and Associate Professor for the College of Health Sciences, a Vice Dean and Associate Professor, and an Associate Dean. Paddock-O’Reilly was responsible for training and hiring new faculty as the Associate Dean at ITT Technical Institute in Carmel, Indiana, and she was also the Academic Success Coordinator.Paddock-O’Reilly, who will interview at CSC April 25, has five degrees. She earned a Bachelor of Arts from Purdue University, a Master of Social Work from Indiana University School of Social Work, an MBA from the University of St. Francis in Joliet, Illinois, and a Master of Science degree in marriage and family studies from Lee University in Cleveland, Tennessee. Her Doctor of Health Education is from A.T. Still University.
