Fly over the Sandhills in a plane to check cattle and peer below. If you are along for the ride ask the pilot/rancher to gain a bit of altitude and tack on several miles before landing in the pasture by his shop. The dunes, stabilized by grass and other vegetation, resemble green waves on the ocean at just the right phase of spring. Taking the comparison further, windmills look like buoys in the semi-arid “sea”.

James Girard, of Alliance-based Girard Well Service, usually maintains a more typical vantage point while installing and maintaining windmills in the area. Though many landowners have added or converted stock wells to solar power he expects the workhorses of the west to remain.

“A lot of guys will triage,” he explained. “They may take a windmill out and use parts. May like to have both (wind and solar) in one pasture. With basic maintenance, windmills will last a long time . . . simple effective design.”

Despite being a dependable, green machine windmills have taken a hit in rural America before. According to “Windmills on the American Plains,” an article posted on the Homestead National Historical Park site of the National Park Service, the 1935 Rural Electrification Act allowed more farms to have electricity, using the power source to pump water. “By the 1960’s, most windmills were sold to developing nations around the world or to three specific cattle ranching regions of the Plains . . . the sandhills of western Nebraska, the panhandle of Oklahoma and Texas, and southwestern Texas,” the article says.

Anyone who works on windmills may deal with equipment and parts around a century old at times. Pointing out an Aermotor-made gearbox in his inventory, James said that particular design was made prior to 1933 – the last time the company changed its basic design. “Some parts have been on 60 years or better,” he commented. “We’re lucky enough our inventory of used windmill parts is probably the biggest in the Panhandle. . . . They’re like the Chevy engine of the world. . . . Because there’s no foundries they’ve become very recycled. You can take four or five that are busted up and make two or three windmill heads.”

Though windmills are durable, working on “all the stuff down the hole is pricey.” Minimum maintenance is usually around $1,000. “If you spread the cost of solar over five years versus pulling a windmill twice over that time it’s hard not to go with solar.”

“I’d say it’s plateaued as far as changing/converting,” James said. “All the new wells are almost all solar for livestock. (We) don’t move windmills (much) anymore. We did have government funding to change from windmills to solar. All the government equipment programs are solar – all the cost-share is solar and pipeline (share with one well to other tanks). Some places (such as Lusk, Wyo., or Whitney, Neb.) it’s more efficient to run pipeline instead of more wells.”

Manpower has become a greater factor when considering ranch infrastructure. James pointed out that more cattle in one area served by a solar well means moving those animals less often. “Now you have a fraction of the employees to do everything.”

Just as Aermotor became a lasting and preferred brand, James said the solar market is dominated by two major brands and a “knock-off of one”. New owners of a system benefit from a 5-year warranty though “I have (had) some in for 12-15 years and haven’t touched panels or pumps. Had a 6-panel system that wasn’t scratched in the big hail storm a few years ago,” he said. The panels, all from China after an Oklahoma company went out of business, are rated at 60 miles per hour/1.5-inch hail.

Technology continues to advance with solar pumping systems. James described one 110 volt AC/DC design where you can plug a generator in. A new model is expected to pump from depths up to 400 feet and the same pumping power is possible with fewer panels in an array.

Windmills Will Endure On Nebraska’s Dune Sea

After the average last frost, plant the seeds in rows, placing about 1 seed every 5 inches. Cover lightly with 1/2-1 inch of soil. Darkness is required for germination. Keep the soil moist. The final spacing should be 8-12 inches between plants in rows. The spacing between the seedlings allows the plants to receive enough sunlight for healthy growth.

They can be eaten raw, although they are most often pickled, like capers. Use the young pods that are still green and soft. Display at the fair like you would peas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Seeds can be eaten raw or pickled.&nbsp; Flowers are used to dye vinegar and other infusions, garnish drinks, salads, soups, pasta, and desserts, and make some stuffed flowers. Stems, a similar texture to chives, are used in salads and more. Leaves, both big and small, use as you would lettuce. All parts taste very similar and have a peppery “bite” that resembles a radish.

Alliance, NE – Nebraska's Choice Gas Selection Period is set to run from April 4th through April 24th. This program allows natural gas customers to choose their gas supplier and pricing option for the upcoming gas year.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The City of Alliance encourages you to make a choice to lock in your lower rate, because the default rates can run anywhere from 33% to 80% higher, which can result in hundreds of dollars more for your gas bill over a year. &nbsp;&nbsp;

While there are several participating suppliers this year, the City encourages residents to Choose ACE, because ACE is the only community-owned supplier in the program. Nebraska Game &amp; Parks issued a statement about Camping in Nebraska that included the Box Butte Reservoir state recreation areas.

Reservations begin April 8th at 8 a.m. for May 1. or later reservations for the&nbsp;Box Butte Reservoir SRA near&nbsp;Hemingford. The new campground includes 20 Electric Plus (30/50 amp) campsites as well as a new shower house and dump station.

Camping reservations for site near Hemingford open Monday

The Alliance Police Department issued a statement on Friday about an early morning burglary at Carhenge on March 28.

Police say that the incident occurred at about 2:20 a.m. on that morning, when video surveillance captured two individuals in dark clothing, presumably male in a two-door black sedan.

The individuals were seen with prybars and a portable drill as they burglarized Carhenge.

Spring is here — and with it, opportunities of all kinds to enjoy the outdoors. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation or the chance to learn new skills, you can find it at a Nebraska state park. Here are some activities you can start enjoying now.

Take in the fresh breezes and spring colors on a hiking trail. Nebraska’s state parks have a variety of trails, including gentle walking paths and rugged mountain biking trails. If you want to watch birds during your trek, visit Wildcat Hills State Recreation Area in western Nebraska, which boasts a diverse range of species. The park also has a nature center perfect for a break after your walk.

Birding is a great spring activity, as Nebraska is a prime spot during spring migration. Opportunities include wild turkeys and hundreds of songbirds returning to the state from their winter homes.

Spring is go-time for anglers. Everybody wants to be out fishing in April and May as there are so many opportunities, especially as the water warms up.

While you can find good fishing for just about any species, crappie and walleye will be especially favorable. Crappie can be found statewide in shallow water where they’re easy to access. The newly established Victim Advocate position will be embedded within the Scottsbluff Police Department, allowing for seamless coordination between law enforcement and victim advocacy services. Chronic absenteeism is a major problem at Alliance Public Schools according to administrators, and APS is holding an event to address it with the Alliance community.

On April 11, there will be an event called the Parent Power for School event at the Middle School, at 6 pm for families to challenge this issue.

APRIL 3, 2024 (LINCOLN, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— The Nebraska State Patrol is reminding all drivers to keep their focus where it matters during Distracted Driving Awareness Month. Keep your eyes on the road and off your phone while you’re behind the wheel.

To kick off April, which is recognized as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, troopers, deputies, and officers are participating in a national mobilization focused on safe driving. The campaign began on Monday, April 1, and runs through Sunday, April 8.

“Through education and enforcement, our troopers are constantly working to keep Nebraska roads safe,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “When you’re behind the wheel, your primary focus should be driving. Help keep yourself and others safe by eliminating distractions by putting your phone down.”

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 3,000 people were killed in crashes involving distracted driving in 2022, accounting for 8% of all roadway fatalities across the country.

The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office is issuing a Consumer Alert regarding an increase in Family Emergency Scams in Nebraska.

The Family Emergency, or Grandparents Scam, involves scammers reaching out to Nebraskans by phone and text with emotionally gripping stories and an urgent need for money. Scammers know you are more likely to give money to someone you trust, so they pose as family members in crisis.

These scams are a form of Imposter Scams. According to the FTC, Imposter Scams were the top reported fraud category last year, with more than 850,00 reports from consumers, and 21% of these reported a dollar loss.

Scammers may also pose as authority figures, like a bail bondsman, hospital representative, attorney, or police officer, requesting money on behalf of your family member.

This is an opportunity for children ages 3 to 21 with little or no dental insurance to receive care at no cost. Children will be seen at Gordon Memorial Hospital and Life Smiles in Sidney.

“This will be the 20th year Dental Days has been offered in the Panhandle and providing important care for area kiddos. There are several partners that bring this event to fruition including local dentists, school nurses, hospitals, community volunteers, Open Plains Transit, and UNMC,” said Janelle Visser of Panhandle Public Health District (PPHD). Visser is one of the coordinators behind the annual event.

CHADRON – Chadron State College’s Spring Daze activities are scheduled to begin this week and include several items for both campus and community members to attend.

Events will kick off Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Presidential Block Party, sponsored by the Campus Activities Board (CAB), in the Kent overflow parking lot. Food trucks, games, National Guard simulators, and other activities will be available. The Celebration of the 100th Anniversary of C-Hill will begin later that evening at 6 p.m. at Elliott Football Field. Following the celebration, the Night of Country Swing (NOCS) Club will host a bonfire and dance in the Backyard.

On Friday, activities will surround the Presidential Inauguration of Dr. Ron K. Patterson. The processional will begin at the Student Center at 2:30 p.m. and the Investiture will follow at 3 p.m. in Memorial Hall. Hors D'oeuvres will be served at a reception in the lobby of the Math and Science Center of Innovative Learning (COIL) at 4:30 p.m. The Pit will also host a March Madness Watch Party for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship. Food will be available.

Bob Ross Paint Night, sponsored by the Residence Life Association (RLA), is scheduled for Sunday at 4:30 p.m. at The Hub.

A Solar Eclipse Watch Party viewing the partial solar eclipse will take place in The Veath Planetarium at 11 a.m. Monday. Shining Light on Mental Health and Sexual Assault Awareness will begin Monday at 5 p.m. in the parking lot south of the Nelson Physical Activity Center. Monday’s activities will conclude with Bingo Night in The Hub at 7 p.m.

Gering Police are in search of a man who is a suspect in an assault with a hammer.&nbsp;

Panhandle Post is told that the man is described as a 5'8 Hispanic man who Police say drove away from the 1800 block of 20th street in Gering NE on Wednesday before a 911 call was made at the residence.

Any residents in the area of 20th and R street in Gering, NE that may have video footage they are willing to share, or information about the incident, and are asked to contact the Gering Police Dept at 308 436 5089.
