The Chadron and Crawford Volunteer Fire Departments, United States Forest Service, and Oelrichs/Ardmore, SD Volunteer Fire Departments battled a grassfire on Aug. 12. 

The Wayside area fire was near the Nebraska/South Dakota state line west of Highway 385, northwest of Chadron.&nbsp;

The fire started at 10 a.m. Friday and burned approximately 142 acres.&nbsp;

Fire crews battled the fire for seven hours.&nbsp;

Busy state parks are busy for a reason: There’s plenty to do and lots to see. But there are plenty of quieter parks, too. They still offer amenities and attractions that make for a fun day or weekend, but typically aren’t as packed with visitors.

Here are nine state parks to put on your list when you’re looking for peace and more relaxation.

Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area

In northwest Nebraska, visit Box Butte Reservoir State Recreation Area, which provides great water recreation in a beautiful, clear lake. Box Butte is a great choice for boating and camping. The area also provides good fishing, picnicking and some of the best birdwatching opportunities in the Panhandle.

Niobrara State Park is a hidden gem: It has all the amenities of a large state park, such as swimming pools, horseback riding, camping and cabins, but still is a quiet getaway. This scenic, tranquil park in northeast Nebraska offers a variety of outdoor experiences, including primitive and RV camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, and wildlife viewing. The park also offers boat ramps.

Olive Creek State Recreation Area offers primitive camping, fishing in the 175-acre lake, boating, and plentiful picnicking opportunities. A lesser-known spot, Olive Creek offers a chance to get away from the noise of a more developed campground.

Well off the beaten path, Alexandria State Recreation Area has the feel of a wildlife management area. This scenic area in southeast Nebraska offers two recently renovated lakes with excellent fishing, a large group shelter for picnicking, boating, and camping. The campground has plenty of shade trees, as well as water, modern restrooms and a playground.

At Fort Kearny State Recreation Area, campers can enjoy a quiet area plus a dose of Nebraska history; Fort Kearny State Historical Park is just 3 miles west. The unique Fort Kearny Hike-Bike Trail also begins at the park, making it a great place to camp for bikers and hikers. The area also offers fishing, boating, swimming, horse trail rides and camping.

Log cabins built by an early pioneer still are standing at Victoria Springs State Recreation Area, which draws its name from the mineral springs that once supplied bottled water throughout the nation. This remote park in central Nebraska offers fishing and boating on the 5-acre lake, as well as great picnicking opportunities and paddleboat rentals. Campers can enjoy scenic campsites; two modern cabins are available as well.

Keller Park State Recreation Area, near Ainsworth, is a beautiful area for camping. It’s also one of the few spots where anglers can pursue both rainbow trout and warm-water fish species. Nestled amid rugged tree-covered bluffs, the 196-acre area offers excellent angling, along with camping, hiking and wildlife viewing.

This remote area features beautiful pine trees and bluffs. Anglers can enjoy great fishing, as Long Pine Creek offers some of Nebraska’s best trout fishing. The park also includes an archery range, a 1-mile scenic hiking trail and camping. Make sure to bring food and have a picnic; the park is a popular day-use spot with more than 40 picnic tables and five shelters.

Enders Reservoir, in southwest Nebraska, is a good escape for someone looking to enjoy nature in an uncrowded setting. Part of the park doubles as a wildlife refuge in the fall and winter, so it is less developed than neighboring parks. Enders offers beautiful white sand beaches, boating, swimming, picnicking, fishing and camping.

OMAHA -&nbsp;Nebraska roads are about to get more crowded - and hazardous - as thousands of students and teachers return to school. This time of year is particularly dangerous due to the combination of young inexperienced drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists who will all share the road in the early morning and afternoon hours.

City Manager,
Michael Morgan, announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation has
selected Denver Air Connection as the Essential Air Service provider for the
Kearney Regional Airport.

The two-year
contract awarded to Denver Air Connection will begin on November 1, 2022.
Denver Air Connection will operate
50 passenger regional
jets with 12 nonstop roundtrip flights per week to Denver International Airport.

Denver Air
Connection owns, operates and maintains its entire fleet of aircraft at their
base located at Centennial Airport in Englewood, CO. This location
ties them to Denver International Airport which enables the
company to control and effectively manage its stringent operational and
maintenance programs to the highest standards.

Denver Air
Connection will feature bookings, connections and baggage transfers that will
access United Airlines and American Airlines global network. Flight schedules
and prices will be announced soon.

Flo Rida coming to the Nebraska State Fair

We have another stunning show that both quilters and artists will love.&nbsp; Carnegie is excited to announce its new exhibit, “Organic and Geometric,” on display until September 17 in the upper Skala and Garwood Galleries. 

The exhibit is the work of fiber artist Mary Sue Suit from Sidney, NE and her brother, photographer Joe Lucas from Littleton, CO. Her works for this show include beautifully detailed quilts of various sizes and expert color palettes. Some are quilts constructed using the basic block from “A New Twist on Triangles” by Mary Sue Suit.&nbsp; In these quilts the block is 2”x2” and is constructed using four triangles.&nbsp; The block lends itself to floral creations. Other smaller pieces of the exhibit were made to participate in the Hoffman Challenge, a yearly event sponsored by Hoffman Fabrics. Each year a specific fabric was chosen by the company that must be included in the design. And one artistic creation called “Star A Peel” was made for an exhibit at the National Quilt Museum in Paducah, Kentucky. Joe Lucas has amazing landscape photography showing cotton candy like sunsets and glowing night skies. The pieces seem to come right off of the photograph with metal prints that give gorgeous luminosity.

He had the opportunity to develop his latent interest in wildlife and outdoor photography while living in Alaska where presentations requiring photos were a large part of his work responsibilities.&nbsp; His retirement and relocation to Littleton, Colorado has allowed him to focus on outdoor photography, which he enjoys sharing with others.

Alliance – The City of Alliance is pleased to announce that they have completed a pledge to improve their response to those with a mental health condition in their community. 

The pledge is part of an initiative called the One Mind Campaign which was started by the International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP), a professional association for law enforcement that provides training, technical assistance, and recruitment services.

To join the One Mind Campaign, law enforcement agencies must pledge to implement four promising practices (found on <a href="http://www.cityofalliance.net">www.cityofalliance.net</a>) in a 12–36-month period to ensure successful future interactions between police officers and persons with mental health conditions.

In the law enforcement community, people with mental health conditions has become a common focus, with some departments estimating that as many as 20% of their calls for service are related to mental health challenges. Chief Lukens made the decision to join the IACP’s One Mind Campaign because officers that have a greater skillset with personal interaction regardless of mental health circumstances reduce injuries and misunderstandings.

By completing the One Mind Pledge, the Alliance Police Department established a sustainable partnership with a local mental health organization Region 1 Health, developed and implemented a model policy to address officers’ interactions with those affected by mental health conditions, and ensured that all of their officers received mental health awareness training, with at least twenty percent of the department completing the more intensive Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) or equivalent crisis response training. The 40-hour Crisis Intervention curriculum is designed to train officers to respond to calls that involve individuals with mental health conditions. The curriculum includes education on various de-escalation techniques and live role-play scenarios of officers responding to persons who need mental health assistance.

The greatest benefit in taking the One Mind Campaign pledge has been a reduction in unnecessary mental health holds and an increase in obtaining support for those who are struggling with life circumstances.

The prosecutor handling the case said it's the first time he has charged anyone for illegally performing an abortion after 20 weeks, a restriction that was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-nebraska-omaha-state-legislature-cfe67dcc35cb4b5ba86989cd796261a3">passed in 2010</a>. Before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, states weren’t allowed to enforce abortion bans until the point at which a fetus is considered viable outside the womb, at roughly 24 weeks.

In one of the Facebook messages, Jessica Burgess, 41, tells her then 17-year-old daughter that she has obtained abortion pills for her and gives her instructions on how to take them to end the pregnancy.

The daughter, meanwhile, “talks about how she can’t wait to get the ‘thing’ out of her body," a detective wrote in court documents. “I will finally be able to wear jeans,” she says in one of the messages. Law enforcement authorities obtained the messages with a search warrant, and detailed some of them in court documents.

In early June, the mother and daughter were only charged with a single felony for removing, concealing or abandoning a body, and two misdemeanors: concealing the death of another person and false reporting. It wasn't until about a month later, after investigators reviewed the private Facebook messages, that they added the felony abortion-related charges against the mother. The daughter, who is now 18, is being charged as an adult at prosecutors' request.

Burgess' attorney didn’t immediately respond to a message Tuesday, and the public defender representing the daughter declined to comment.

When first interviewed, the two told investigators that the teen had unexpectedly given birth to a stillborn baby in the shower in the early morning hours of April 22. They said they put the fetus in a bag, placed it in a box in the back of their van, and later drove several miles north of town, where they buried the body with the help of a 22-year-old man.

The man, whom The Associated Press is not identifying because he has only been charged with a misdemeanor, has pleaded no contest to helping bury the fetus on rural land his parents own north of Norfolk in northeast Nebraska. He's set to be sentenced later this month.

In court documents, the detective said the fetus showed signs of “thermal wounds” and that the man told investigators the mother and daughter did burn it. He also wrote that the daughter confirmed in the Facebook exchange with her mother that the two would “burn the evidence afterward." Based on medical records, the fetus was more than 23 weeks old, the detective wrote.

Burgess later admitted to investigators to buying the abortion pills “for the purpose of instigating a miscarriage.”

At first, both mother and daughter said they didn’t remember the date when the stillbirth happened, but according to the detective, the daughter later confirmed the date by consulting her Facebook messages. After that he sought the warrant, he said.

Madison County Attorney Joseph Smith&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/state-and-regional/nebraska/norfolk-mother-and-daughter-accused-of-illegal-abortion-burning-and-burying-body/article_ff99fd49-a710-5ec3-8d51-5aced3001c71.html">told the Lincoln Journal Star</a>&nbsp;that he’s never filed charges like this related to performing an abortion illegally in his 32 years as the county prosecutor. He didn't immediately respond to a message from the AP on Tuesday.

The group National Advocates for Pregnant Women, which supports abortion rights,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-government-and-politics-constitutions-93c27f3132ecc78e913120fe4d6c0977">found 1,331 arrests or detentions</a>&nbsp;of women for crimes related to their pregnancy from 2006 to 2020.

In addition to its current 20-week abortion ban, Nebraska tried —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/voting-rights-us-supreme-court-health-nebraska-legislature-0b8e1e93be48c9e3fd7264c94da7b786">but failed</a>&nbsp;— earlier this year to pass a so-called trigger law that would have banned all abortions when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade.

Facebook spokesman Andy Stone defended the way the company handled authorities' request for information in this case after a gag order about it was lifted Tuesday.

“Nothing in the valid warrants we received from local law enforcement in early June, prior to the Supreme Court decision, mentioned abortion," Stone said. “The warrants concerned charges related to a criminal investigation and court documents indicate that police at the time were investigating the case of a stillborn baby who was burned and buried, not a decision to have an abortion.”

Facebook has said that officials at the social media giant “always scrutinize every government request we receive to make sure it is legally valid.”

Facebook says it will fight back against requests that it thinks are invalid or too broad, but the company said it gave investigators information in about 88% of the 59,996 times when the government requested data in the second half of last year.

Nebraska is experiencing terrific growth.&nbsp; We’ve seen big success creating jobs, cutting taxes, and attracting investment to our state.&nbsp;

This week, I’m hosting Nebraska’s Ag and Economic Development Summit in Kearney.&nbsp; The&nbsp;Summit convenes key leaders from across the state to discuss how to build on our strong momentum.&nbsp;&nbsp;Over the course of the Summit, we’ll dive into the challenges and opportunities we face as a state.&nbsp; Some topics are familiar: developing our workforce, opening new markets for Nebraska’s exports, and growing value-added agriculture. &nbsp;Others are newer, such as dealing with the supply chain issues that have disrupted the flow of commerce over the past year.&nbsp; I look forward to gathering together to look at where we’ve been, what we’ve weathered, and how much Nebraska has grown.&nbsp;

Our state’s growth over the past year has been truly remarkable. &nbsp;Nebraska has enjoyed 12 consecutive months of record-high employment.&nbsp;&nbsp;There are now 24,700 more Nebraskans employed in our workforce than there were before the pandemic began.&nbsp; Manufacturing employment in Nebraska is at its highest point in over 14 years.&nbsp;

While generating jobs, we’ve successfully controlled State spending to deliver tax relief.&nbsp; Over the past eight years, we’ve dramatically reduced the rate of state spending growth—limiting it to 2.8% annually.&nbsp; During that same time, we delivered $12.7&nbsp;billion&nbsp;of tax relief to Nebraskans.&nbsp; This year’s historic tax package (LB 873) will provide 12 times the amount of tax relief of any tax relief bill passed in any prior administration.&nbsp;

The changes to our tax code also make us more competitive for businesses looking for places to grow.&nbsp; This year, we’ve already seen major investments in communities across Nebraska.&nbsp; Here are just some of the examples:

As established businesses grow in Nebraska, entrepreneurship is also strong.&nbsp; Last year, Nebraska attracted an all-time high of $317.6 million in venture capital.&nbsp; That more than doubled our state’s previous high of $153 million in 2018.&nbsp;

Small businesses are growing in the Good Life, too.&nbsp; We’ve worked to help our Main Street businesses access the infrastructure and workforce they need to thrive.&nbsp; We’re building rural broadband in Nebraska to expand access to high-speed Internet.&nbsp; We’ve developed a talent pipeline through programs like the Developing Youth Talent Initiative, high school career academies, registered apprenticeships, and Nebraska Career Scholarships.&nbsp; We’re also investing in affordable housing to increase inventories of high-quality, reasonably priced homes.

These investments are helping our small businesses succeed.&nbsp; In its latest Small Business Empowerment Report, Amazon reported that Nebraska vendors who sell through Amazon’s online store have had the fastest year-over-year retail growth in the nation at 60%.&nbsp; In federal fiscal year 2021, Nebraska’s lending institutions helped the Small Business Administration break its previous record of regular program loans in Nebraska at $244 million.&nbsp; This lending activity was $80 million more than the previous record set in 2011, which is a great sign of small business growth.&nbsp;

Our state’s largest industry, agriculture, has been the engine of Nebraska’s growth.&nbsp; Our beef exports for 2021—at $1.81 billion—surpassed our previous annual high by 25%.&nbsp; Our top crops had great years in 2021, too. &nbsp;We set records for both soybean and corn production with 1.85 billion bushels of corn and 351 million bushels of soybeans.&nbsp; Nebraska beef brought in $11.35 billion in cash receipts in 2021, up 18% from 2020.

With all of this growth, Nebraska is shattering records for State revenue receipts.&nbsp; State revenues exceeded projections by over 30% last fiscal year, bringing in $1.47 billion more than expected.&nbsp; The State’s rainy day fund is at an all-time high of $1.69 billion.&nbsp;&nbsp;This sets up the next Legislature to build on the historic tax relief we delivered to Nebraskans in 2022.

 <li>January:&nbsp;Ag Processing&nbsp;announced it will build a major soybean processing plant in David City with capacity to process over 50 million bushels per year.</li><li>February:&nbsp;Norfolk Crush&nbsp;unveiled plans to build a $375 million soybean crushing plant near Norfolk&nbsp;that will process 38.5 million bushels per year.</li><li>March:&nbsp;Preferred Popcorn&nbsp;began production at a 123,000 square foot facility in Waco.&nbsp; The company is a key driver of our nation-leading popcorn production.</li><li>April:&nbsp;Google&nbsp;announced a $750 million investment in Papillion/Omaha.</li><li>May,&nbsp;3M&nbsp;announced a $58 million expansion in Valley to bolster manufacturing of respiratory and hearing protection products.</li><li>June:&nbsp;Duncan Aviation&nbsp;held a groundbreaking ceremony for its $38 million expansion in Lincoln.&nbsp; The project is expected to create up to 75 jobs.</li><li>July:&nbsp;Monolith Materials&nbsp;announced $300+ million of private investment as it scales up production at its existing facility in Hallam, constructs another plant to manufacture carbon-free ammonia, and develops new technologies.</li><li>August: Last week,&nbsp;Clean Harbors&nbsp;said it expects to spend over $50 million in Kimball this year as part of a $180 million investment to double its capacity to incinerate waste materials in Nebraska.&nbsp; The expansion is creating 100 full-time jobs.</li>

Bayer Fund’s&nbsp;<a href="https://www.americasfarmers.com/" target="_blank">America’s Farmers Grow Communities</a>&nbsp;program is once again teaming up with Nebraska farmers across the country to find and fund the organizations and institutions that keep their communities thriving. From August 1 to November 1, eligible farmers can enroll for the chance to direct a $5,000 donation to a local eligible nonprofit organization, school or youth agriculture program.

Since its inception in 2010, America’s Farmers initiatives have awarded more than $65 million to thousands of schools and nonprofit organizations across the country. Farmers have played a key role in identifying and directing funds to programs and organizations that contribute to their communities’ health and vibrancy, such as food banks, schools and agriculture programs. In Nebraska alone, farmers have directed more than $4.2 million in Grow Communities funds to local nonprofits.

“Grow Communities is a special program because we work closely with farmers to find and fund nonprofit organizations that make a positive impact in their communities,” said Al Mitchell, Bayer Fund President. “Every year, we hear from farmers and Grow Communities recipients who tell us the dollars are making a difference. Because of this feedback, the Bayer Fund team is excited to help strengthen rural communities through this program.”

Farmers are eligible to enroll in Grow Communities if they are 21 years of age or older and are actively engaged in farming at least 250 acres of any crop. Box Butte County Fair events continued Wednesday in Hemingford, highlighted by the Fair Queen Contest at the grandstand.&nbsp; Twelve young Ladies were vying for the title. 

The days schedule included interviews and preparation throughout the day, leading up to the main event Wednesday night.&nbsp; At the end of the evening,&nbsp; 16 year old Brinna Phillips was crowned as Box Butte County Fair Queen.&nbsp; She is the daughter of Trent Phillips and Lisa Hickman and was sponsored by Pats Creative.&nbsp; &nbsp;First Attendant was&nbsp; 18 year old Elizabeth Mayer.&nbsp; She is the daughter of Tonya and Michael Mayer and was sponsored by Mobius Communications.&nbsp; Second Attendant was 17 year old Avery Davies.&nbsp; She is the daughter of Jessica and Adam Davies and was sponsored by The Body Shop and Clicks by Kim.&nbsp; Named as Miss Congeniality was 17 year old Peyton Kindred.&nbsp; She is the daughter of Cassie Kindred and Brian Kindred.

The Fair Royalty will take part in various events through the rest of the week and will be honored on a float in the Fair parade on Saturday.

Box Butte County Fair Queen Contest held Wednesday

Eagle Radio's KQSK 97.5FM Double Q Country Sports Director Dave Collins and KCOW 92.5FM/1400AM Morning Show Host/Production Director Jason Wentworth both won awards at the 2022 Nebraska Broadcasters Association (NBA) convention held Aug. 10 in Lincoln. This year Wentworth won a Silver award for "Best Commercial" from the NBA for KCOW. The commercial was for Dave’s Pharmacy called "Bug on the Street." Wentworth has been with Eagle Communications for 24 years, beginning in July of 1998.

Wentworth has been Commercial Production Director for Eagle radio stations in Alliance and Chadron since 1998; in the Fall of 1999 he began his 23-year run as host of the KCOW morning show. Including this year, Wentworth has won nine Nebraska Broadcasters Association Awards since 2009 in categories including Commercial Spot, Promo Spot, Service To Children and Service to Community. Four of these have been Gold Awards, indicating best in the state of Nebraska. &nbsp; "I love my job. I love Alliance. And I love having The Mighty K-Cow Art Players available at all times," Wentworth said. "In the Dave's Pharmacy spot that won this year I asked Mike Glesinger to interview a mosquito and I asked Tammy Griffee to be a mosquito. &nbsp;And for over a decade I've asked Kalin Krohe to be a weird old recluse who lives in the radio station basement. OMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — A Nebraska woman has been charged with helping her teenage daughter end her pregnancy at about 24 weeks after investigators uncovered Facebook messages in which the two discussed using medication to induce an abortion and plans to burn the fetus afterward.

A Facebook spokesman declined to talk about the details of this case, but the company has said that officials at the social media giant “always scrutinize every government request we receive to make sure it is legally valid.”

 </figure>By THE ASSOCIATED PRESSOMAHA, Nebraska (AP) — A Nebraska woman has been charged with helping her teenage daughter end her pregnancy at about 24 weeks after investigators uncovered Facebook messages in which the two discussed using medication to induce an abortion and plans to burn the fetus afterward.The prosecutor handling the case said it's the first time he has charged anyone for illegally performing an abortion after 20 weeks, a restriction that was&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-health-nebraska-omaha-state-legislature-cfe67dcc35cb4b5ba86989cd796261a3">passed in 2010</a>. Before the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June, states weren’t allowed to enforce abortion bans until the point at which a fetus is considered viable outside the womb, at roughly 24 weeks.In one of the Facebook messages, Jessica Burgess, 41, tells her then 17-year-old daughter that she has obtained abortion pills for her and gives her instructions on how to take them to end the pregnancy.The daughter, meanwhile, “talks about how she can’t wait to get the ‘thing’ out of her body," a detective wrote in court documents. “I will finally be able to wear jeans,” she says in one of the messages. Law enforcement authorities obtained the messages with a search warrant, and detailed some of them in court documents.In early June, the mother and daughter were only charged with a single felony for removing, concealing or abandoning a body, and two misdemeanors: concealing the death of another person and false reporting. It wasn't until about a month later, after investigators reviewed the private Facebook messages, that they added the felony abortion-related charges against the mother. The daughter, who is now 18, is being charged as an adult at prosecutors' request.Burgess' attorney didn’t immediately respond to a message Tuesday, and the public defender representing the daughter declined to comment.When first interviewed, the two told investigators that the teen had unexpectedly given birth to a stillborn baby in the shower in the early morning hours of April 22. They said they put the fetus in a bag, placed it in a box in the back of their van, and later drove several miles north of town, where they buried the body with the help of a 22-year-old man.The man, whom The Associated Press is not identifying because he has only been charged with a misdemeanor, has pleaded no contest to helping bury the fetus on rural land his parents own north of Norfolk in northeast Nebraska. He's set to be sentenced later this month.In court documents, the detective said the fetus showed signs of “thermal wounds” and that the man told investigators the mother and daughter did burn it. He also wrote that the daughter confirmed in the Facebook exchange with her mother that the two would “burn the evidence afterward." Based on medical records, the fetus was more than 23 weeks old, the detective wrote.Burgess later admitted to investigators to buying the abortion pills “for the purpose of instigating a miscarriage.”At first, both mother and daughter said they didn’t remember the date when the stillbirth happened, but according to the detective, the daughter later confirmed the date by consulting her Facebook messages. After that he sought the warrant, he said.Madison County Attorney Joseph Smith&nbsp;<a href="https://journalstar.com/news/state-and-regional/nebraska/norfolk-mother-and-daughter-accused-of-illegal-abortion-burning-and-burying-body/article_ff99fd49-a710-5ec3-8d51-5aced3001c71.html">told the Lincoln Journal Star</a>&nbsp;that he’s never filed charges like this related to performing an abortion illegally in his 32 years as the county prosecutor. He didn't immediately respond to a message from the AP on Tuesday.The group National Advocates for Pregnant Women, which supports abortion rights,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-government-and-politics-constitutions-93c27f3132ecc78e913120fe4d6c0977">found 1,331 arrests or detentions</a>&nbsp;of women for crimes related to their pregnancy from 2006 to 2020.In addition to its current 20-week abortion ban, Nebraska tried —&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/voting-rights-us-supreme-court-health-nebraska-legislature-0b8e1e93be48c9e3fd7264c94da7b786">but failed</a>&nbsp;— earlier this year to pass a so-called trigger law that would have banned all abortions when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Laura Albro from Bayard,&nbsp; Faith Miller from Mullen and Braelyn Shrewsbury from Alliance&nbsp; were all awarded $1000.&nbsp; Each was asked to send a brief bio and what this scholarship was going to help them achieve.

I attended Bayard High School and during that time, I was highly involved in many activities: FFA, Student Council, Cross Country, Quiz Bowl, Student Lead Team, and National Honor Society. I also participated in 4-H for 10 years. In the fall, I will be attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and majoring in horticulture or agronomy with an Engler Entrepreneurial minor. I'm not quite sure what career I want to have, but I have a dream to own a greenhouse/floral shop one day. This scholarship is important to me not only because it will help me through college, but also because it is another step towards realizing my dreams.

I’m from Mullen, Nebraska. I am a Nebraska FFA State Officer this year and I am attending the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to become a veterinarian. This scholarship is important to me because I want to open the first equine surgical facility in the Sandhills in the future, and this helps me to accomplish my dream!

This scholarship is important to me because it is helping me to fund my dream of becoming a Veterinary Technician. I recently graduated from Alliance High School where I was involved in FFA, 4H, Cheerleading, Volleyball, Basketball, Dance, and Track. In the fall I will be attending Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture to pursue a degree in Veterinary Technology. I am hoping to come back to the Alliance area and continue working for the Alliance Animal Clinic as a Licensed Veterinary Technician.

The scholarship fund was created after Gering High School students won state and national awards sponsored by Samsung Corporation demonstrating drone use in agricultural settings. As the sponsor for these students, PHREC was awarded $20,000 from Samsung. This gift was matched by then-University President Hank Bounds. Further donations from fundraisers, including the recent 2022 Glow Big Red campaign, have provided PHREC the opportunity to begin awarding this scholarship annually.
