BROADWATER, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers and Investigators with the Nebraska State Patrol responded to a residence near Broadwater at the request of the Morrill County Sheriff’s Office.&nbsp;

At approximately 6:30 pm MT, troopers were requested to assist at the scene of a family dispute which resulted in the shooting death of a male victim, Rodney Bennett age 57.&nbsp; The Morrill County Sheriff’s Office had arrested Joseph Bennett 29, before troopers arrived.

The Nebraska State Patrol was requested to be the lead agency once it was learned the victim had died due to his injuries.&nbsp; Investigators were assisted by the Sidney Police Department and members of the WING Task Force.

An autopsy is planned as the investigation continues.

Fort Robinson State Park and Chadron State Park in northwest Nebraska have revised their schedules for some services as visitors and employees returning to school have prompted staffing changes.

The revised schedules will take effect Aug. 15.

Restaurant&nbsp;— Hours are now 6:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Friday and 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.

Horse Rides&nbsp;— On Monday through Friday, the long ride will start at 8 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. each day and the short ride will start at 9:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. On those days, all rides will begin at the Long Ride Barn on Soldier Creek Road. On Saturdays and Sundays, the rides will return to normal hours and starting locations.

Swimming Pool— The park’s indoor swimming pool will be closed Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Activity Center&nbsp;— Ceramics are closed for the season.

Office&nbsp;— The office will be open daily 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., but closed for lunch.

Horse Rides&nbsp;— Rides are available Saturdays and Sundays only. Rides begin at 9 a.m., 10 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Tickets must be purchased at the office at least 30 minutes before the ride.

Access to certain areas of parks in north-central Nebraska and the Panhandle will be temporarily closed to make way for improvements.

Mike Morava, regional superintendent for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, said each of the projects is being started early enough in the fall to be finished before visitation peaks next year.

Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford — The Soldier Creek Campground along U.S. Highway 20 will be closed Sept. 12 through May 2023 to make way for an electrical upgrade. Following the project, the campground’s 70 electrical sites will all provide 50-amp service. The park’s recently expanded Red Cloud Campground will remain open until Sept. 30, and the campground near the Mare Barn that usually serves visitors with horses will remain open through the November firearm deer season.

Smith Falls State Park near Valentine&nbsp;— Access to Nebraska’s tallest waterfall, Smith Falls, will be closed Sept. 6 through May 2023 as workers replace the aging wooden walkway that leads to it. The 500-foot walkway will be replaced with durable composite decking on a steel frame.

Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area near Valentine — The Cedar Bay Campground will close Sept. 6 through May 2023 for an electrical upgrade. When complete, all 37 electrical sites at the campground will have 50-amp service. The park’s seven other campgrounds will be available during the project.

Keller Park State Recreation Area near Ainsworth&nbsp;— The campground will be closed from Sept. 6 through May 2023 as workers upgrade the electrical service to the campsites. Following the upgrade, all 24 electrical sites at Keller will have 50-amp service.

Closures planned during park upgrades in Panhandle, north-central Nebraska

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts announced Monday that he will not call a special legislative session to try to enact a 12-week abortion ban because the measure doesn't have enough votes to break a filibuster.

Ricketts — a Republican who has said he wants to ban all abortions, even in cases of rape and incest — said in a statement that Speaker of the Legislature Mike Hilgers informed him that only 30 lawmakers would vote for a measure to ban the procedure starting at 12 weeks of pregnancy. Thirty-three votes are needed to break a filibuster.

“It is deeply saddening that only 30 Nebraska state senators are willing to come back to Lincoln this fall in order to protect innocent life,” Ricketts said in his statement.

Hilgers, a Republican abortion opponent, had said in June that he anticipated a special session later this summer.

During the Legislature's regular session, opponents successfully filibustered a proposed “trigger law” that would have seen Nebraska outlaw abortion once&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-supreme-court-decision-854f60302f21c2c35129e58cf8d8a7b0">the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the landmark 1973 Roe v. Wade decision</a>&nbsp;that legalized the procedure nationwide. The vote to end debate in the officially non-partisan, one-chamber Legislature was 31-15, two votes shy of what was needed.

Ricketts' announcement comes after voters in neighboring Kansas&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-primary-elections-kansas-abortion-b6d62a852c2ce4617f2c03589fbb523e">last week resoundingly rejected a ballot measure</a>&nbsp;that would have allowed the state’s conservative Legislature to ban abortion.&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-us-supreme-court-health-indianapolis-indiana-83fe300188fcf15d8a3b4a36ceee7443">Indiana on Friday became the first state to approve such restrictions</a>&nbsp;since the Supreme Cout's June ruling that removed constitutional protections for the procedure.

Abortion rights proponent Sen. Megan Hunt, of Omaha, had warned in May that she would make a special session on abortion an “excruciating, painful experience” for her fellow lawmakers. She said politicians across the country are seeing the effects of the Supreme Court's June decision.

“We’re seeing what’s happening to patients in Texas, to assault survivors in Ohio; we’re seeing what happened on the ballot in Kansas, and Nebraska anti-abortion politicians are afraid of the issue," Hunt said. "They know that the majority of Nebraskans support the right to abortion, and they know that if they brought us into a special session, they simply wouldn’t win.”

Nebraska won't hold special legislative session on abortion

A Scottsbluff Police Officer on Patrol in east Scottsbluff observed a parked vehicle that he suspected may be operated by a subject whom had a local warrant for his arrest. 

The officer later observed the vehicle mobile in the area of his initial observation and attempted to catch up to the vehicle to identify any occupants. 

While the officer attempted to observe the vehicle, it began to accelerate a high rate of speed. The vehicle was obviously eluding the officer and eventually reached speeds in excess of 40 mph above the posted limit on E 20th Street east of 11th Avenue. Due to heavy vehicular traffic, the speed of the fleeing vehicle and the lack of knowledge of the occupants the pursuit was terminated.

The cornfield was located in the northeast part of Scottsbluff.

 These subjects observed what they thought to be a subject in the vehicle however were not able to provide a description of this person. When officers arrived to the report from these citizens the vehicle was unoccupied and a search with officers and a K-9 did not locate a suspect.

 The vehicle was impounded and removed from the scene.

Other police department personnel searching for a suspect in the area did contact a male north of the area where the vehicle was recovered. This male was covered in mud and admitted that he had been an occupant of the vehicle, but not the driver. Due to a lack of evidence this subject was later released without charges. This investigation is ongoing.

Scottsbluff police involved in vehicle pursuit, ask public for information

Eagle Radio in Alliance/Chadron and the Robert E. and Patricia Schmidt Foundation donated $15,000 to the Alliance Recreation Center (ARC) on Aug. 8. 

Bob Schmidt, founder and original owner of Eagle Communications, through the Schmidt Foundation, left a legacy for Eagle employee-owners and communities. Bob and his wife Pat believed in giving back to the communities in which they did business, including all media markets across the Eagle footprint in Nebraska, Kansas and Missouri. Bob and Pat valued the areas of health care, economic development, the arts and education. The Schmidt Foundation has been honored to give back to communities; everything from college scholarships to local donations, healthcare awareness and equipment, and funding for local small businesses in the area.

"What a legacy from Bob Schmidt," ARC Director Mara Anderson said. "And the story of, you know, starting with one radio station and building and building in it, you know, that kind of chain reaction of sowing good seeds and doing good things in the community; to know he sold [Eagle] to his employees. You know, that just speaks to who he is as a person, him and his wife. And as a team, their donations and their dedication to serving the communities that they service is an honor and a legacy that we are proud to receive."

The $15,000 check gifted to the ARC is the second installment of donations from the Schmidt Foundation. In 2021, the foundation donated $15,000 as well.

"We're so excited," Anderson said. "So, you know, when we come out in April, and we have the Make More Possible campaign and we've got this dollar amount that we've started from and people are thinking, Where did this come from? Well, the seed money that we started this last campaign with was Bob and Patricia Schmidt, Schmidt's donation of $30,000. And so, that is going to be invested in our classroom expansion project that we hope is completed by summer of 2023. Hopefully sooner...working on some details there. But we have all of the funds received that we need so far to complete that project."

"It has been a real pleasure working through this process with our community leaders, local businesses, and the Schmidt Foundation," Nebraska Regional Manager Olivia Hasenauer said. "To be a part of giving back to a community who has given so much to our company, and allowed our Media Center, radio stations, websites, digital and video product suite to serve this area for so many years, is an honor. The Schmidt Foundation will continue to give funding to non-profits in our area, we're so excited to continue on this journey to sustained growth and development in our communities."

The classroom expansion project at the ARC is needed because the youth programs have become so popular. ARC After School serves Kindergarten through fifth grade students year-round.

"I'll just tell you, from my perspective, as someone who receives grants...that I really appreciate in a funder is when the funder is so invested in the community...that isn't so much just writing checks and walking away," Anderson said. "But doing your research, they wanted to find out, how would dollars be maximized in the community. And so, like I said, thanks to Mayor Dafney and to Chelsea Herian at Box Butte Development Corporation, they said, hey, there's some things going on at the ARC that we really think your donation would be worth considering the ARC and what we have going on. And so, in due diligence, they came out, Olivia and Mikala [Toedtli] came out and met and we talked about the capacity issues. It's a much-needed program. We started that answering a decade long gap and after school programming, and we know especially in the climate that we live right now, expanded learning opportunities beyond the school bells. You know, it is so important. It's not just the school's responsibility to educate our children. I feel so passionately about that. And so, when a funder comes in and they want to know how to maximize dollars, especially this foundation with their tenants of wanting to invest in education and wanting to invest in the arts, and economic development, I can think of no better project...no better worthy program to invest in than the children in our community."

Anderson said learning is vital for children.

"It supports a whole family, you know, in being able to provide these opportunities for kids," Anderson added. "And we know, programs like ours, impact an individual's...one child's academic progress. It also impacts their social and emotional development and physical well-being. I mean, it's everything across the board that you could want for a child. And that impact is also that chain reaction that the foundation was really concerned with. Our program keeps kids active. I just finished serving parents of our summer camp. They loved that this program keeps their kids active, it keeps them off the Xbox, off the PlayStation, off the devices, and it puts them into a context and it gives them unique learning opportunities that they probably wouldn't get otherwise. The things that we've been able to do this summer with the kids have been so exciting and so rewarding. You know, we talk about capacity issues, we always at pretty much every season of the year, we've got a waitlist of at least 15 to 20 students. We need to do something about that. And, you know, building outdoor classrooms, which we've done, by gracious donors on on the other side of the state, you know, that helps us during the summer months. But what about during the school year, you know, when outside isn't always an option year-round. This donation that they have given is going to blow open the doors on what we can do capacity wise."

Harrison- Park Ranger Tukker Romey will present her program “The Lesser Known Fossil Species” on Friday, August 12, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument Hitchcock Theater in the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is located at 301 River Rd. Harrison, NE. &nbsp;

From the late 1800’s to 1922, fossils were excavated and examined to learn of these ancient animals and how they were preserved. The species found in an abundance are displayed in our visitor center, but the other species found here at Agate, from as few as one specimen, are not on display. Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is located 34 miles north of Mitchell, NE or 22 miles south of Harrison, NE on Highway 29 and 3 miles east on River Rd. By Agate Beds National MonumentHarrison- Park Ranger Tukker Romey will present her program “The Lesser Known Fossil Species” on Friday, August 12, 2022, at 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. in the Agate Fossil Beds National Monument Hitchcock Theater in the Visitor Center. The Visitor Center is located at 301 River Rd. Harrison, NE. &nbsp;From the late 1800’s to 1922, fossils were excavated and examined to learn of these ancient animals and how they were preserved. The species found in an abundance are displayed in our visitor center, but the other species found here at Agate, from as few as one specimen, are not on display.
