Chadron, Nebraska — During the Labor Day holiday, including the end of summertime and the busy Labor Day weekend, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is working alongside the law enforcement community in Chadron, Nebraska to decrease impaired driving. From August 19 through September 5, the Chadron Police Department will be participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over enforcement period. In support of the law enforcement community’s dedication to protecting the lives of residents in their communities, you’ll see officers working together during this time to take drunk drivers off the roads. No matter how you plan to celebrate the end of the season this year, make sure you plan it safely.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 11,654 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in 2020 that involved an alcohol-impaired driver. On average, more than 10,000 people were killed each year from 2016 to 2020, and one person was killed in a drunk-driving crash every 45 minutes in 2020. This is why the Chadron Police Department is working together with NHTSA to remind drivers that drunk driving is not only illegal, it is a matter of life and death. As you head out to festivities during the end of summer and Labor Day weekend, remember: Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over.

“We’re fortunate to live in a community where we work closely with our friends and neighbors that know it’s our first priority to keep people safe. Throughout the year we rely on our community members to help keep our streets free of drunk drivers; we want everyone to have a safe summertime and Labor Day holiday.” said Sergeant Cloyd. “This awareness effort is designed to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal and to help prevent loss of life. We look forward to our continued partnership between law enforcement and drivers helping us protect our community and putting an end to this senseless behavior.” he said.

During the 2020 Labor Day holiday period (6 p.m. September 4 – 5:59 a.m. September 8), there were 530 crash fatalities nationwide. Forty-six percent of those fatalities involved drivers who had been drinking (.01+ BAC). More than one-third (38%) of the fatalities involved drivers who were drunk (.08+ BAC), and one-fourth (25%) involved drivers who were driving with a BAC almost&nbsp;

twice the legal limit (.15+ BAC). Age is a particularly risky factor: Among drivers between the ages of 21 and 34 who were killed in crashes over the Labor Day holiday period in 2020, 44% of those drivers were drunk, with BACs of .08 or higher.

The Chadron Police Department and NHTSA are reminding citizens of the many resources available to get them home safely. Drunk driving is not acceptable behavior, especially when there are so many safe alternatives to get you home safely.

The Chadron Police Department recommends these safe alternatives to drinking and driving:

· Remember that it is never okay to drink and drive. Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, designate a sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home safely.

· If you see a drunk driver on the road, contact the Chadron Police Department, or dial 911.

· Do you have a friend who is about to drink and drive? Take the keys away and make arrangements to get your friend home safely.

Chadron police to enforce 'Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over' campaign

On Aug. 4 at 5:12 p.m. the Scottsbluff Police Department was called to 401 South Beltline (West) to a shooting. 

Officers found two males in the parking lot. 

35-year-old Alexander J. Maldonado of Gering was taken into custody. 

34-year-old Martin A. Maldonado Jr. of Scottsbluff suffered a single gun shot to his abdomen. He was transported by ambulance to Regional West Medical Center for treatment.

Maldonado was arrested and charged with Attempted Murder, Use of a Firearm to Commit a Felony, Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm, Protection Order Violation, and Discharging a Firearm Within City Limits. 

Maldonado was transported to the Scotts Bluff County Jail.

Scottsbluff Fire Department, Gering Police Department, Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, Mitchell Police Department, and Valley Ambulance assisted with this incident.

Gering man arrested in shooting 

LAUREL, Neb. (AP) — Police arrested a suspect early Friday in connection with the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/fires-nebraska-omaha-57aa8ea4c3cfb05715f2693211172a54">deaths of four people</a>&nbsp;in the small northeast Nebraska city of Laurel, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

The patrol said it would release more details about the arrest later Friday morning.

The arrest came a day after four people were found dead in two burning homes in the city about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of Omaha.

The body of one person was found after firefighters were called to an explosion and fire. A short time later, firefighters were called to another home nearby and found the bodies of three people inside.

After examining both burned-out homes, the state patrol said that “gunfire played a part in the incident at both homes" and that both fires had started just after 3 a.m. Thursday.

Nebraska State Patrol Col. John Bolduc declined to say whether the victims were related and did not offer more detail about how they died.

“We’re not categorizing it as anything right now,” Bolduc said.

When asked if residents of the town of less than 1,000 people should worry about their safety, Cedar County Sheriff Larry Koranda called Laurel “a very safe community" but said people “need to be diligent" and report anything out of the ordinary to police.

When the bodies were discovered, Laurel police recommended that the community go on a voluntary lockdown, prompting most businesses, a senior center and schools to limit access for part of the day.

Alliance- The DISCover United Way Disc Golf Tournament is set for Saturday, August 13 at the Rolling Prairie Course at Laing Lake in Alliance. 

The Pro Disc Golf Association (PDGA) C-Tier sanctioned tournament is open to both professionals and amateurs with $1000 added cash payout in the pro division. Disc golfers of all ages and abilities are welcome to play with divisions from juniors to professional. Players can register at dgscene.com/UW22. Amateurs will receive a player’s pack of 1 custom hot stamped disc at check-in on the day of the tournament.

The United Way tournament features four bonus holes added to the regular 18 hole Rolling Prairie Course per round. There are a total of 44 holes with 22 holes in the morning and 22 holes in the afternoon. Friday, August 12th at 6 p.m. a disc golf clinic will be held at Rolling Prairie Disc Golf Course in Alliance. The clinic is $10 per participant. There is no preregistration for the clinic and registration will be taken that evening on a first come first serve basis with the registration fee payable to United Way. There is no need to play in the tournament to attend the clinic. A beverage cart is available for the participants of the tournament. The course is open to the public and the public is welcome to attend to watch the tournament. United Way to host PDGA Sanctioned Disc Golf Tournament at Rolling Prairie Course

This week,&nbsp;Governor Pete Ricketts thanked Nebraska National Guard (NNG) Soldiers from the 1057th&nbsp;Military Police Company for their service during a visit to the Middle East.&nbsp; The Governor spoke to Soldiers at Camp Arifjan Army Base in Kuwait to celebrate a rare occurrence—one Nebraska team transferring its command to another detachment of fellow Nebraskans.&nbsp; The Scottsbluff-based team of the 1057th&nbsp;Military Police deployed in October 2021.&nbsp; As they return home, the Kearney-based detachment of the 1057th&nbsp;is carrying on their mission.

“Twenty-five years ago, Nebraskans in the National Guard rarely deployed overseas,” said Gov. Ricketts.&nbsp; “Today, young women and men who join the Nebraska National Guard not only prepare to be deployed—they&nbsp;expect&nbsp;to be deployed.&nbsp; They’re eager to support U.S. military missions abroad, and they have the training and skills to take on major responsibilities.&nbsp;&nbsp;Congratulations&nbsp;to the first team of the 1057th&nbsp;Military Policy Company for completing a successful deployment.&nbsp; We pray for the safety and success of the second team as they carry on the great work of the Nebraska National Guard in the Middle East.”

Major General Daryl L. Bohac, Adjutant General of the NNG, joined the Governor in thanking members of the Guard for their excellent service.

“Although nowhere on our uniform does it say ‘Nebraska’ when we serve overseas with our U.S. Army and U.S. Air Force fellows, our Soldiers and Airmen of the Nebraska National Guard distinguish themselves through their skillful and dedicated service,” said Maj. Gen. Bohac.&nbsp; “They represent the people of our great state exceedingly well and make all of us proud.”

The 1057th&nbsp;Military Police Company has been providing law enforcement at Camp Arifjan.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Given the large size of the base, people enter it every day to provide routine services such as delivering food and supplies or collecting trash.&nbsp; Everyone who works on the base—whether they are contractors, military personnel, State Department diplomats, or local service providers—requires background checks and regular screening. &nbsp;The Nebraska National Guard is performing this work at Camp Arifjan to secure the base and ensure law and order.

Gov. Ricketts thanks Neb. National Guard for service in Middle East

An Alliance man has seen multiple criminal charges filed against him recently in Box Butte County Court. 

38-year-old Chad Kelley was arrested on a warrant and could be charged with many felonies and misdemeanors. 

On June 30, Kelley was charged with a Class 3 Misdemeanor for unauthorized use of a propelled vehicle. 

On July 10 Kelley was issued a citation for possession of drug paraphernalia in the 500 block of East Third Street. 

July 18 Kelley was charged with a Class 3 Misdemeanor for failure to appear or comply with a citation. He failed to appear in Box Butte County Court on July 5 dealing with his first case. 

July 21 Kelley was charged with a Class 4 Felony for possession of Alprazolam, possession of Fentanyl, a Class 3 Misdemeanor for unauthorized use of a propelled vehicle and an infraction for possession of drug paraphernalia. 

According to court documents, on July 19, the Alliance Police Department assisted the Nebraska Stae Patrol due to a stolen 1997 Ford F-150 in the 200 Block of Howard Avenue.

Officers spoke with a person on the scene who told them Kelley borrowed the vehicle four days prior.

According to court docuements, Kelley told that person, “that he lost a blue fentanyl pill in the truck and wished to find the truck to retrieve it.”

Officers asked the vehicle's owner/driver what was in the vehicle the last time they left it parked. The driver told them only a screwdriver and a jumper box. 

Officers searched the vehicle and found a clear plastic baggie with a fentanyl and Alprazolam pill. 

At the scene Kelley emptied his pockets. Court reports said, “At this time officers viewed multiple items fall out of Kelley’s pockets. Amongst these items, officers viewed a small piece of straw, a ball point pen tube, and a clear plastic baggie. The straw and the ball point pen tube were viewed to have a white residue inside and recognized as drug paraphernalia.”

On July 22, Kelley was charged with two Class 2A Felony counts of burglary, a Class 4 Felony of theft by unlawful taking, $1,500-$4,999, and a Class 1 Misdemeanor for theft by unlawful taking, $501-$1,499. 

These charges come from burglaries at the BNSF Railway maintenance building on June 20 and 21.

Kelley stole an impact wrench from a BNSF truck inside a locked garage. Video footage also revealed Kelley trying to break open a vending machine inside the building and stealing multiple items inside the building. 

A BNSF supervisor told police that Kelley was fired from the company in 2020. 

On June 13 and 14, Kelley stole other iteams from the BNSF maintenance building.

As of August 1 the City of Chadron has limited resources to board and house stray animals. 

We would like to ask everyone living within the City of Chadron that owns a dog to ensure they have their pet(s) licensed with the City of Chadron. 

Licensing your pets allows the police officers to identify your pet and where they live at, which allows us to get them home faster. 

Additionally, we post stray pets that we locate on our Facebook page.

 This has been a very successful tool for us and has assisted in reducing the number of animals that have to go to the animal shelter.

Heat Advisory in effect for Panhandle 

GERING, Neb. (AP) — Fire crews made substantial headway in containing a western Nebraska wildfire that has destroyed some homes, despite getting significantly less rain than officials hoped for.

Officials believed the Carter Canyon Fire south of Gering was about 85% contained by Wednesday morning after being only about 30% contained a day earlier, Ben Bohall with the Nebraska Forest Service said.

Fire crews had hoped storms Tuesday would bring heavy rains to help douse the flames, but Bohall said the area instead only saw light showers and lightning strikes that sparked two additional fires.

The first fire was sparked inside the wildfire parameters and was extinguished after burning a little more than 3 acres (12,140 square meters), Bohall said. The second fire erupted in Banner County south of the wildfire and was put out after burning about 5 acres (20,234 square meters), he said.

A jump in humidity has helped keep the wildfire from gaining energy, Bohall said. There also was a slight chance of thunderstorms and showers Wednesday night, but crews weren't expecting much in they way of help from Mother Nature, he said.

“Still, we're hoping that by tomorrow, we'll end up turning this effort back over to the Gering Fire Department,” Bohall said.

The wildfire has scorched about 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) of mostly grass and timberland, destroying three homes and damaging several others over the weekend. Officials confirmed late Tuesday that the fire was started by several lightning strikes Saturday evening. It gained ground early on due to tinder-dry conditions, rough terrain and high winds.

The National Weather Service has forecast scorching temperatures over 100 degrees (37.7 Celsius) each day through Friday, with the heat receding somewhat to the upper 80s on Saturday.

This is a free program which distributes food to families in Alliance, serving one distribution per car.

A lot is happening the world of City Transit. The Chadron City Transit is excited to announce our new office to be located at 127 W. 2nd Street #101 with storefront windows. 

This is an exciting move for City Transit allowing the drivers to have an office to report to, the public to visit and inquire about Transit Services or questions about Chadron, a community room for Transit meetings with the public and an indoor “bus stop” during inclement weather. The new office will be open and fully operational the week of August 8.

NCAP: Emergency food, shelter funds available in Panhandle 

LINCOLN –&nbsp;Today,&nbsp;Governor Pete Ricketts, in accordance with a request from the White House, announced that all U.S. and Nebraska flags are to be flown at half-staff to honor Congresswoman Jackie Walorski.

Walorski had represented Indiana’s 2nd&nbsp;District in the U.S. House of Representatives since January 2013.&nbsp; She passed away this afternoon as the result of a car crash.

Flags will be lowered to half-staff immediately and return to full staff at midnight tomorrow.&nbsp;

Governor Pete Ricketts invited retailers who sell higher ethanol blends of fuel to apply for tax credits made available through the passage of Legislative Bill (LB) 1261e.&nbsp; Gov. Ricketts signed the bill into law this spring after it was passed unanimously by the Nebraska Legislature.&nbsp;

The Nebraska Department of Revenue is administering the program and began applications for the credits on Monday, August 1st. &nbsp;For more information or to apply, visit&nbsp;<a href="https://ethanol.nebraska.gov/resources/nebraska-higher-blend-tax-credit-act/" target="_blank">ethanol.nebraska.gov/resources/nebraska-higher-blend-tax-credit-act</a>.

“Utilizing ethanol should be a centerpiece of our national strategy to lower gas prices,” said Gov. Ricketts. &nbsp;“Ethanol saves drivers money at the pump, is better for the environment, and creates opportunities for farm families here in Nebraska.&nbsp; As a state, we’re doing our part to grow U.S. energy production by encouraging sales of renewable fuel.”

In Nebraska, E85 is available at 124 fueling stations. &nbsp;E15 is available at 112 fueling stations, and that number continues to grow.&nbsp;

“At the retail level, very simply put, E15 is better fuel and it costs less,” said Randy Gard, chief operating officer of Bosselman Enterprises and secretary of the Nebraska Ethanol Board. &nbsp;“We are excited about the passage of LB1261e and what it can do for our customers. &nbsp;If you are a retailer, there is now nothing standing in your way today to make the transition from E10, the standard fuel most people use today, to joining this mass conversion to E15. &nbsp;There are incentives with LB1261e, there’s consumer demand, there are certainly price pressures, and increased availability at the terminals. &nbsp;This is a win for everybody…retailers, legislators, farmers and ranchers, and especially users of ethanol who support Nebraska’s economy, help the environment, and save money every time they fill up.”

Bosselman Enterprises, located in Grand Island, was an early adopter of E15 at many of its Pump and Pantry locations across the state. &nbsp;They continue to see double digit sales growth for E15 every year.

By selling a 10% blend at the pump, fuel retailers are already helping Nebraskans save at least $275 million per year. &nbsp;That savings increases when higher blends are figured in.

“Right now, for some, choosing ethanol is what’s helping them budget for groceries and pay other bills,” said Reid Wagner, administrator of the Nebraska Ethanol Board. &nbsp;“While there are many other benefits of the fuel, the cost savings are what has motivated the government to make real changes quickly. &nbsp;The Biden Administration continues to allow E15 to be used throughout the summer, and now, the Nebraska Legislature is rewarding retailers for providing healthier, lower cost fuel options for their constituents. &nbsp;We know the continued relief ethanol provides economically and environmentally and will continue sharing that message until higher ethanol blends are easily accessible to everyone.”

E15, a blend of gasoline and 15% ethanol, is safe and approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to use in vehicles 2001 or newer, light-duty trucks, medium-duty passenger vehicles (SUVs), and all flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs). &nbsp;Flex fuel vehicles use the highest ethanol blends, up to E85.

Eight elk were harvested during Nebraska’s first special elk depredation season.

Five bulls and three cows were taken during the July 1-31 season on private land in specific parts of Lincoln, Perkins, Keith, Deuel and Garden counties.

“I would call the season a success, with eight elk harvested in a month compared to our general elk season, when five or six elk typically are harvested in six months in this area,” said Alicia Hardin, wildlife administrator for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. “This is right in the window of what we anticipated for harvest during this season.”

Game and Parks staff have worked with landowners in this area for several years to lower elk herds to reduce damage to the cropland, including trampling, wallowing and consumption of crops. The small herds that live there stay through harvest, then disperse, making it difficult for hunters to take elk during the late general season.

“The elk removed from this smaller population and the increased pressure to the area should lead to less damage to crop fields,” Hardin said.

Total participation in the season was 179 hunters – 153 residents and 26 nonresidents – who purchased 211 permits. No hunter filled more than one permit and one nonresident was successful in taking an elk.

Permits were available to residents, nonresidents and landowners who own at least 80 acres within the hunting area. Landowners were required to hunt their own land.&nbsp;

The season was designed to allow for as many potential hunters as possible in a geographic area regulated by landowner permission for access. Because permits were unlimited, hunters had time to obtain permission to hunt before buying; generally, when a limited number of permits are issued, there is a rush to obtain available permits whether one has gained access or not.

The special season is not expected to affect the general elk season given the size of the area included in the season — roughly 873 square miles of 23,770 square miles included in the two elk units (North Platte River and Box Elder). The National Weather Service forecast a 50% chance of thunderstorms producing heavy rains Tuesday afternoon into the night. A storm could help douse&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-nebraska-wildlife-fires-evacuations-8543ecc46a2545efc086d69510711e37">the Carter Canyon Fire south of Gering</a>&nbsp;that has scorched about 25 square miles (65 square kilometers) of mostly grass and timberland, destroyed three homes and damaged several more in the Carter Canyon community that was evacuated Sunday. No injuries have been reported.

While fire crews would welcome rain, they also fear lightning strikes that could spark new fires in the tinder-dry region, said Ben Bohall with the Nebraska Forest Service.

Firefighters had contained about 30% of the fire going into Tuesday, and a lot of progress was made late Monday and overnight as winds died down from the 20 mph (32 kph) seen Sunday.

“Several of our divisions are beginning mop up in their respective areas,” Bohall said. “We’re scaling back a bit and have had roughly 10 crews demobilize.” About 35 fire departments comprising about 200 people had been fighting the fire Sunday and early Monday.

Officials were alerted to two separate fires Saturday evening in heavily treed areas of the Cedar Canyon Wildlife Management Area and Carter Canyon Public Land. Dry conditions, rough terrain and high winds hampered efforts to control the fires that merged into one later in the weekend.

Tuesday's weather will pivotal in the effort to control the fire, as the forecast from Wednesday through Friday warns of temperatures near or above 100 degrees.

Crews battling Panhandle fire hope for rain, fear lightning

ST. LOUIS (AP) — The climate deal reached last week by Senate Democrats could reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that American farmers produce by expanding programs that help accumulate carbon in soil, fund climate-focused research and lower the abundant methane emissions that come from cows.

The bill includes more than $20 billion to improve the agriculture sector’s impact on the environment, mostly by expanding existing U.S. Department of Agriculture programs that help farmers change to better practices. Farmers would be paid to improve the health of their soil, withstand extreme weather and protect their land if the bill is enacted.

The roughly $370 billion climate and energy spending deal would bring the country closer to cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, according to new analyses. That is something many scientists say is important, and that President Joe Biden promised. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W. Va., a long-time holdout on climate legislation, endorsed measures that would benefit electric vehicles, renewable energy and climate-friendly farming. Agriculture is responsible for 11% of the country's climate-warming emissions.

The funding would expand programs favored by both environmental groups and the agricultural sector, said Ben Thomas, who focuses on agriculture at the Environmental Defense Fund.

“They are voluntary, they are incentive-based, they get results in terms of implementing conservation practices on working lands,” said Thomas. “It’s great to see.”

Thomas said historically, the agricultural sector has not aggressively tackled its contribution to climate change, but that hesitation has shifted in recent years and more money will accelerate progress. There's a lot of potential, he said.

“It is worth taking very, very seriously,” Thomas said.

Cows belch an enormous amount of methane and agriculture is responsible for more than one-third of human-caused methane emissions, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. This is a way that people's diets — if they are high in meat or dairy — contribute to greenhouse gas buildup. The bill directs funds towards altering what cows eat to reduce those emissions.

On farms, soil can hold or sequester carbon if it is left undisturbed and covered by a crop. Money from the bill will expand programs that help farmers turn their soil less, implement climate-friendly crop rotation practices and plant cover crops that aren’t for harvest but improve soil health.

“The historic funding validates the fact that these practices are important,” said Ranjani Prabhakar, an agriculture and climate policy specialist at the environmental group Earthjustice

Cover crops, for example, are only used by a fraction of farmers. If their use were to triple — from around 5% of cropland to 15% — it could remove the equivalent of 14 megatons of carbon dioxide per year, roughly the total annual emissions of New Hampshire, according to Kevin Karl, a flood food and climate researcher at Columbia University.

“The adoption rate is so low,” Karl said. “There’s a lot of potential improvement.”

Federal officials already offer farmers help with a variety of environmentally-focused issues including irrigation and fertilizer use. One program helps fund conservation easements for agricultural land.

Dan Sheafer works on nitrogen research with the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association and operates a 20-acre farm. He plants cover crops and keeps soil disturbance to a minimum — practices that benefit soil health and reduce soil erosion. But he said cover crops also have drawbacks, requiring farmers who want an environmental benefit to change their practices.

“There's just more time involved with doing cover crops,” he said.

The bill also includes money for research. While it is clear that managing soil properly can capture carbon, more needs to be known about important questions like how long sequestered carbon stays in soil.

Kaiyu Guan, a professor focused on climate and agriculture at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, said some people believe farmers don’t pay enough attention to climate change.

“I think farmers shouldn’t be blamed, they actually should be incentivized,” Guan said. “Not only are they doing this to be part of the solution to help the climate, they are doing this to help their land."

How the climate deal would help farmers aid the environment

We’re less than a month away from our state’s biggest annual celebration—the Nebraska State Fair.&nbsp; From August 26th&nbsp;through September 5th, Nebraskans from across the state will gather to share all that Nebraska agriculture has to offer.&nbsp; It will be the 153rd&nbsp;time we gather for this time-honored tradition.&nbsp; Last year, the State Fair attracted more than a quarter-million attendees to Grand Island, including visitors from 10 countries and 43 states.&nbsp; This year, we’ll be ready to welcome even more guests looking to get a taste of the Good Life.

At its core, the State Fair is a fantastic celebration of Nebraska’s number one industry.&nbsp; Agriculture is the heart and soul of what we do here in our state.&nbsp; It accounts for roughly 20 percent of our economy and is a powerhouse for job creation—one in four Nebraska jobs are connected to agriculture.&nbsp; The State Fair gives us an opportunity to appreciate the full scope of agriculture in Nebraska and how it continues to shape our rich heritage.

Fairgoers are given an experiential way to learn about agriculture through the State Fair’s interactive Raising Nebraska exhibit.&nbsp; Attendees can drive a combine simulator, get their hands dirty in the various soils that nourish Nebraska’s crops, and learn how farmers use technology to irrigate fields.&nbsp; Additionally, a milking parlor at the State Fair gives attendees a firsthand look at dairy farming.

Beyond agriculture, the State Fair also showcases Nebraskans’ creativity.&nbsp; Cooks will enter homemade pies, jams, and relishes into culinary contests.&nbsp; Backyard farmers will compete to see how their flowers and vegetables stack up against the competition.&nbsp; And sculptors, quilters, and woodworkers will display their handiwork.&nbsp; These friendly competitions are an opportunity for Nebraskans to take home the coveted blue ribbon.

The State Fair is also Nebraska’s premier family-friendly festival.&nbsp; It boasts the state’s biggest carnival, featuring rides and games for all ages. &nbsp;And, there’s an abundance of entertainment options throughout the fair’s 11 days.&nbsp; Attendees can watch everything from BMX stunt riding to ultimate bullfighting to pig racing.&nbsp; On August 27th, fans can even cheer on runners competing in the Nebraska State Marathon, a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.

This year, we’ll be ready to welcome even more guests looking to get a taste of the Good Life.At its core, the State Fair is a fantastic celebration of Nebraska’s number one industry.&nbsp; Agriculture is the heart and soul of what we do here in our state.&nbsp; It accounts for roughly 20 percent of our economy and is a powerhouse for job creation—one in four Nebraska jobs are connected to agriculture.&nbsp; The State Fair gives us an opportunity to appreciate the full scope of agriculture in Nebraska and how it continues to shape our rich heritage.Fairgoers are given an experiential way to learn about agriculture through the State Fair’s interactive Raising Nebraska exhibit.&nbsp; Attendees can drive a combine simulator, get their hands dirty in the various soils that nourish Nebraska’s crops, and learn how farmers use technology to irrigate fields.&nbsp; Additionally, a milking parlor at the State Fair gives attendees a firsthand look at dairy farming.The fair also allows our next generation of Nebraska ag leaders to exhibit livestock through FFA and 4-H.&nbsp; They will show their skills caring for animals, helping fair attendees to better understand the importance of livestock agriculture to Nebraska.&nbsp; But as agriculture advances, so does the fair.&nbsp; This year, students will also participate in a robotics competition to demonstrate the many uses of technology in modern agriculture.Beyond agriculture, the State Fair also showcases Nebraskans’ creativity.&nbsp; Cooks will enter homemade pies, jams, and relishes into culinary contests.&nbsp; Backyard farmers will compete to see how their flowers and vegetables stack up against the competition.&nbsp; And sculptors, quilters, and woodworkers will display their handiwork.&nbsp; These friendly competitions are an opportunity for Nebraskans to take home the coveted blue ribbon.The State Fair is also Nebraska’s premier family-friendly festival.&nbsp; It boasts the state’s biggest carnival, featuring rides and games for all ages. &nbsp;And, there’s an abundance of entertainment options throughout the fair’s 11 days.&nbsp; Attendees can watch everything from BMX stunt riding to ultimate bullfighting to pig racing.&nbsp; On August 27th, fans can even cheer on runners competing in the Nebraska State Marathon, a qualifying race for the Boston Marathon.Each year, the State Fair brings world-class musicians to Nebraska.&nbsp; Country music artists Lady A (formerly known as Lady Antebellum) will perform on September 3rd.&nbsp; Lady A is a three-time winner of the “Vocal Group of the Year” from both the Academy of Country Music and the Country Music Association.&nbsp; This year, more than 60 food stands will offer all sorts of flavorful eats.&nbsp; My personal favorite is the Nebraska Cattlemen’s Beef Pit, which serves mouth-watering Prime Rib dinners and slow-roasted beef.&nbsp; The UNL Dairy Store will once again serve up delicious ice cream.&nbsp; And there will be no shortage of funnel cakes, nachos, and fried foods on a stick.True to the Nebraska Way, our State Fair always pays tribute to our veterans.&nbsp; On August 30th, there are several activities planned to honor our Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans.&nbsp; At 3:00 PM, there will be a veteran’s program in the Heartland Event Center.&nbsp; The day’s parade will also salute veterans for their service to our country.&nbsp; Additionally, Patriotic Productions will display their Nebraska&nbsp;Remembering Our Fallen&nbsp;exhibit throughout the entire fair in the Nebraska Building.&nbsp; It commemorates the brave Nebraskans we’ve lost in military service since 2001.As we look forward to the 2022 State Fair, we’re also investing in its future growth.&nbsp; This spring, the State allocated $20 million of federal ARPA funds to improve infrastructure at the State Fair’s home in Fonner Park.&nbsp; The upgrades will ensure our State Fair has first-class facilities for Nebraskans to enjoy for generations to come.Nearly 1,000 volunteers serve a combined 12,000+ hours each year to make the State Fair a success.&nbsp;
