Springing into May at the Alliance Public Library

CAMBRIDGE, Neb. (AP) — A deadly southwestern Nebraska wildfire that has been burning since last week is near to being fully contained, officials said Friday.

Crews have 97% of the Road 702 Fire contained behind fire breaks, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said Friday. That has led to fewer firefighters on the scene as management of the fire has reverted to Nebraska officials from a federal regional oversight team.

More than 220 firefighters and other personnel&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-fires-nebraska-weather-39706b8c0d6b94a6bd707387dc02b7ae">had been working in recent days&nbsp;</a>to dig trenches and create other breaks to contain the fire, which burned an estimated 69 square miles of mostly grass and farm land.

While officials marked crews’ success in containing the flames, they also noted that severe storms were expected to bring back to the region strong winds of up to 65 mph Friday night into Saturday.

“The potential for gusty outflow winds from evening thunderstorms could result in very high rates of fire spread,” the agency said in its statement Friday.

Last week,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-fires-nebraska-emergency-management-5fbf79a71c25690f7f979e29f80e27a2">a retired volunteer fire chief helping with the effort died&nbsp;</a>when his truck went off the road in a blinding haze of smoke and dust. The fire has also destroyed several homes and injured several firefighters.

Construction, demo disposal at Alliance landfill temporarily closed

Today, April 29 at 5:30 a.m. the Grant County Sheriff's Office responded to a one-vehicle rollover accident on Highway 2, west of Hyannis.

The truck rollover was caused by heavy rain and hail on the highway.&nbsp;

"Seatbelts were in use and no injuries were reported," Grant County Sheriff Mike Rath said.&nbsp;

The listening session in Sioux County is scheduled for Thursday, May 12 from 1-2 p.m. at the Courthouse Conference Room in Harrison.&nbsp;All interested members of the public are invited and encouraged to attend.

"We want to hear from as many people as possible," said Marrin. "We are in the process of building our next strategic plan that will bring together WNCC's vision to positively impact the education and well-being of every student, employer, and community member in the Panhandle."

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission approved recommendations for 2022 deer, antelope and elk hunting seasons at its meeting April 28 at Niobrara State Park.

Commissioners approved staff recommendations that will help the agency manage big game populations at socially acceptable levels, address declining mule deer populations in some areas of the state, and maintain resident access to hunting permits.

In other business, the commissioners heard a staff update on the Take ’em Fishing challenge, which recently began its fourth season. The challenge encourages anglers to take beginners fishing, snap a photo, then upload it to a website to be eligible to win prizes.

Staff also gave a report on the change in status of wolves. Following a Feb. 10 court order, gray wolves in the contiguous 48 states and Mexico, except the Northern Rocky Mountain population, now are protected under the Endangered Species Act as threatened in Minnesota and endangered in the remaining states, including Nebraska.

The commissioners heard updates on projects at Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, a fisheries public meeting at Lake McConaughy, walleye spawning, and shooting ranges and programs, and heard from Sen. Tim Gragert, who discussed future recreation opportunities and partnerships to benefit Nebraska.

Dean Rosenthal, Fisheries Division administrator, was honored for his 45 years of service to Game and Parks. Gary Howie and Bill Christiansen, both of Hartington, also were honored for 30 years of volunteer service as Hunter Education instructors.

The commission and Sen. Gragert presented a certificate of appreciation and recognition to Niobrara State Park Superintendent Cogan Thompson for his service to the country. Thompson, a Nebraska Army National Guardsman, recently completed a tour of duty in a conflict zone in East Africa.

Commission approves 2022 big game hunting recommendations

CHADRON – Chadron State College student Ali Musa of San Diego, California, is the Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for April.

Musa, a Sports and Recreational Management major, said he chose Chadron State College because of opportunities in football and to continue his education.

Before moving to Chadron, Musa said he could never picture himself living in a rural area, but he loves the small community because it has provided him with the support to focus on school.

“I struggled here a lot freshman year and I even left football,” Musa said. “I tried to go to community college, but I didn’t like it. Then I came back to Chadron two months before my freshman year was over and was grateful they let me come back. I have loved it here ever since. My grades got better, I had a new perspective on people, and I learned to have a great time.”

His favorite class was Nutrition with Megan Northrup.

“I’m a big nutrition person,” Musa said. “I like to know what I’m putting into my body because I know eating right will help me perform at my highest level. The class just really had me locked in and wanting to know more.”

Musa said he loves playing football and takes it seriously.

“I started playing in the seventh grade, and it was kind of weird because I came from a soccer family, but I saw my older brother play football and he was really good at it so that became my influence. Then I would find myself making plays at recess and it was really fun,” Musa said.

During Musa’s senior year of high school, a coach tweeted about him being the No. 1 defensive back prospect. When it went viral, he began to feel like his hard work was paying off.

After graduation, Musa plans to stay at CSC for graduate school with hopes to one day start his own business.

“I really want to open different gym facilities in the top six states for business prospects. I used to watch House of Athlete with Brandon Marshall and he really inspired me because he opened his own gym,” Musa said. “I have always been in the sports industry and I don’t think I could go into anything else without feeling like I was doing it just for the money. With sports, I’m in it all for the love.”

TRiO Director Jennifer Schaer said Musa has a positive attitude and an impactful personality.

“Ali has a passion for life and loves to be around people,” Schaer said. “He is great at bringing someone up when they are down and he talks to everyone. It has been great to watch Ali grow and learn the past four years at CSC and as a Strive student. I look forward to watching Ali continue to grow as a leader and have enjoyed working with him.”

Chadron State College’s Project Strive/TRiO program, located in the lower level of the King Library, is an academic enrichment program committed to help students succeed. Project Strive also focuses on career exploration, cultural and social enrichment, and self-awareness. Musa named CSC Student of the Month

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — In one of the nation’s most overwhelmingly Republican states, the party is entering the final stretch of a bruising primary campaign deeply divided over who should become the nominee for governor.

Nearly all of Nebraska’s GOP establishment leaders are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-pete-ricketts-tom-osborne-nebraska-06508801bb69a73f4c0a4e505e4b341f">lining up</a>&nbsp;behind businessman Jim Pillen, believing he would be the easy favorite to win in November. But no endorsement matters quite like that of former President Donald Trump, who is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-elections-nebraska-omaha-pete-ricketts-44015f418ecaf6910e5569a80345696e">backing his longtime friend</a>&nbsp;Charles Herbster and will hold a rally on his behalf Friday. And in a twist, a third candidate, state Sen. Brett Lindstrom, is emerging as a strong contender in part because of an endorsement from the mayor of Omaha, the state’s biggest city.

Whoever comes out on top in the state’s May 10 primary will enter the general election in a strong position against Democratic state Sen. Carol Blood. But the fractures that have surfaced during the primary campaign, particularly in the wake of groping accusations from multiple women against Herbster, have frustrated GOP leaders in Nebraska.

“It’s unfortunate,” said state Sen. Steve Halloran, a conservative Republican and longtime party activist. “What we’re seeing here is creating a lot of tension within the party.”

There has been little polling in the nine-person primary race to succeed two-term Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts, who can’t seek reelection because of term limits. Herbster was seen as a strong front-runner through much of the race but is now fighting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-pete-ricketts-nebraska-legislature-c3e80ae9a8235d9db3896c35c997543a">accusations that he groped at least eight young women at public events.</a>

Herbster has denied the allegations and has even filed a lawsuit against state Sen. Julie Slama, the only accuser to be identified by name. Slama, who has endorsed Pillen, has counter-sued, accusing Herbster of trying to silence a sexual assault victim.

The allegations have roiled the race, with Herbster airing an ad that accuses Ricketts and Pillen of orchestrating the allegations. The spot points to Slama’s ties to Ricketts as a former campaign spokeswoman and one of his legislative appointees. Her attorney called the ad a “vicious new political advertisement” and the lawsuit “a frivolous and bad faith attempt to bully a sexual assault victim into silence.”

On Tuesday, four other female Republican state lawmakers said they were setting up a legal fund to help others who have accused Herbster.

“He is a predator,” said Sen. Lou Ann Linehan of Omaha.

Trump defied much of Nebraska’s GOP establishment when he endorsed Herbster, rewarding a longtime supporter and ignoring Ricketts’ request that he stay out of the race. After Trump’s endorsement, Ricketts released a scathing statement about Herbster and then endorsed Pillen, who also has been backed by a host of Nebraska luminaries, including former Gov. Kay Orr, the influential Nebraska Farm Bureau, and renowned former University of Nebraska football coach and congressman Tom Osborne.

The allegations haven’t stopped Trump from scheduling a visit Friday to a motor racetrack between Lincoln and Omaha, where Herbster will be a featured speaker. Trump remains popular in Republican-dominated Nebraska, but some campaign experts question whether his blessing will be enough to offset Pillen’s support from top Nebraska Republicans or Lindstrom’s recent surge.

“Without question, the Trump endorsement has value,” said Chris Peterson, a Nebraska Republican campaign strategist and lobbyist who isn’t affiliated with any of the candidates for governor. “But what we’ve seen over the last few months is that most Republican primary voters already associate Herbster with Trump, so that’s largely factored into their calculus.”

As he waded into this year’s contentious primary races, Trump has ignored a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-entertainment-congress-senate-elections-general-elections-ea0839430fc28a6b08227223c0b4e045">long list of allegations</a>&nbsp;leveled against candidates he supported. He endorsed football great Herschel Walker for an open Senate seat in Georgia, despite allegations that Walker repeatedly threatened to kill his ex-wife and her new boyfriend and exaggerated claims of business success, among others.

He backed one of his former aides, Max Miller, for an Ohio congressional seat even though Miller’s ex-girlfriend, former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham — who also served as a top aide to former first lady Melania Trump — had accused Miller of growing abusive as their relationship deteriorated. Miller has denied the charges.

Some endorsements have come back to sting Trump.

Trump originally threw his support behind Sean Parnell, an Army veteran, in Pennsylvania’s competitive Senate race. But Parnell eventually chose to drop his bid amid allegations of abuse by his estranged wife that he has denied.

Ryan Horn, an Omaha-based political strategist, said Trump’s endorsement of Herbster may be a turnoff for many of the same suburban Omaha Republicans who were skeptical of Trump in 2020. Horn said he doesn’t think Pillen has made much headway with them, either, despite the Ricketts endorsement.

“There’s just something about both of those guys that left voters unsatisfied,” Horn said.

Horn said that could give an edge to Lindstrom, an Omaha financial adviser who has focused his campaign on cutting taxes.

With no clear front-runner, the vote could be tight. The last time Nebraska Republicans were running for an open governor’s seat in 2014, Ricketts won a heated six-man race by less than 2,400 votes and claimed less than 27% of the total Republican primary vote.

Other GOP candidates running are former state Sen. Theresa Thibodeau, who had been Hebster’s running mate but left the campaign; Breland Ridenour, an Omaha information technology manager; and other lesser-known names.

(AP) — In one of the nation’s most overwhelmingly Republican states, the party is entering the final stretch of a bruising primary campaign deeply divided over who should become the nominee for governor.Nearly all of Nebraska’s GOP establishment leaders are&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/college-football-sports-pete-ricketts-tom-osborne-nebraska-06508801bb69a73f4c0a4e505e4b341f">lining up</a>&nbsp;behind businessman Jim Pillen, believing he would be the easy favorite to win in November. But no endorsement matters quite like that of former President Donald Trump, who is&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-elections-nebraska-omaha-pete-ricketts-44015f418ecaf6910e5569a80345696e">backing his longtime friend</a>&nbsp;Charles Herbster and will hold a rally on his behalf Friday. And in a twist, a third candidate, state Sen. Brett Lindstrom, is emerging as a strong contender in part because of an endorsement from the mayor of Omaha, the state’s biggest city.Whoever comes out on top in the state’s May 10 primary will enter the general election in a strong position against Democratic state Sen. Carol Blood. But the fractures that have surfaced during the primary campaign, particularly in the wake of groping accusations from multiple women against Herbster, have frustrated GOP leaders in Nebraska.“It’s unfortunate,” said state Sen. Steve Halloran, a conservative Republican and longtime party activist. “What we’re seeing here is creating a lot of tension within the party.”There has been little polling in the nine-person primary race to succeed two-term Republican Gov. Pete Ricketts, who can’t seek reelection because of term limits. Herbster was seen as a strong front-runner through much of the race but is now fighting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-pete-ricketts-nebraska-legislature-c3e80ae9a8235d9db3896c35c997543a">accusations that he groped at least eight young women at public events.</a>Herbster has denied the allegations and has even filed a lawsuit against state Sen. Julie Slama, the only accuser to be identified by name. Slama, who has endorsed Pillen, has counter-sued, accusing Herbster of trying to silence a sexual assault victim.The allegations have roiled the race, with Herbster airing an ad that accuses Ricketts and Pillen of orchestrating the allegations. The spot points to Slama’s ties to Ricketts as a former campaign spokeswoman and one of his legislative appointees. Her attorney called the ad a “vicious new political advertisement” and the lawsuit “a frivolous and bad faith attempt to bully a sexual assault victim into silence.”On Tuesday, four other female Republican state lawmakers said they were setting up a legal fund to help others who have accused Herbster.“He is a predator,” said Sen. Lou Ann Linehan of Omaha.Trump defied much of Nebraska’s GOP establishment when he endorsed Herbster, rewarding a longtime supporter and ignoring Ricketts’ request that he stay out of the race. After Trump’s endorsement, Ricketts released a scathing statement about Herbster and then endorsed Pillen, who also has been backed by a host of Nebraska luminaries, including former Gov. Kay Orr, the influential Nebraska Farm Bureau, and renowned former University of Nebraska football coach and congressman Tom Osborne.The allegations haven’t stopped Trump from scheduling a visit Friday to a motor racetrack between Lincoln and Omaha, where Herbster will be a featured speaker. Trump remains popular in Republican-dominated Nebraska, but some campaign experts question whether his blessing will be enough to offset Pillen’s support from top Nebraska Republicans or Lindstrom’s recent surge.“Without question, the Trump endorsement has value,” said Chris Peterson, a Nebraska Republican campaign strategist and lobbyist who isn’t affiliated with any of the candidates for governor. “But what we’ve seen over the last few months is that most Republican primary voters already associate Herbster with Trump, so that’s largely factored into their calculus.”As he waded into this year’s contentious primary races, Trump has ignored a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/donald-trump-entertainment-congress-senate-elections-general-elections-ea0839430fc28a6b08227223c0b4e045">long list of allegations</a>&nbsp;leveled against candidates he supported. He endorsed football great Herschel Walker for an open Senate seat in Georgia, despite allegations that Walker repeatedly threatened to kill his ex-wife and her new boyfriend and exaggerated claims of business success, among others.He backed one of his former aides, Max Miller, for an Ohio congressional seat even though Miller’s ex-girlfriend, former White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham — who also served as a top aide to former first lady Melania Trump — had accused Miller of growing abusive as their relationship deteriorated. Miller has denied the charges.Some endorsements have come back to sting Trump.Trump originally threw his support behind Sean Parnell, an Army veteran, in Pennsylvania’s competitive Senate race. But Parnell eventually chose to drop his bid amid allegations of abuse by his estranged wife that he has denied.Ryan Horn, an Omaha-based political strategist, said Trump’s endorsement of Herbster may be a turnoff for many of the same suburban Omaha Republicans who were skeptical of Trump in 2020. Horn said he doesn’t think Pillen has made much headway with them, either, despite the Ricketts endorsement.“There’s just something about both of those guys that left voters unsatisfied,” Horn said.Horn said that could give an edge to Lindstrom, an Omaha financial adviser who has focused his campaign on cutting taxes.With no clear front-runner, the vote could be tight. The last time Nebraska Republicans were running for an open governor’s seat in 2014, Ricketts won a heated six-man race by less than 2,400 votes and claimed less than 27% of the total Republican primary vote.Other GOP candidates running are former state Sen. Trump endorsement divides Republicans in deep-red Nebraska

CHADRON – Tourism businesses, attractions, employees and volunteers will be recognized for their valuable contributions to the Northwest Nebraska tourism industry with the recent creation of an awards program.

Discover Northwest Nebraska will honor a Business/Attraction of the Year, a Frontline Employee of the Year and a Volunteer of the Year for their efforts in the tourism industry during 2022. The program was announced last week at the organization’s Treasure Chest of the Northwest, the region’s annual tourism-industry gathering.

“Tourism generates more than $20 million in economic impact in Dawes County annually, and we want to encourage businesses, attractions, employees and volunteers in our region to go above and beyond to attract visitors and provide them with excellent customer service,” said Discover Northwest Nebraska Director Kerri Rempp.

Nominations for the awards will be due March 1 each year, and they will be presented at the annual tourism gathering, Treasure Chest of the Northwest, each spring. Online nominations can be submitted at http://discovernwnebraska.com/industry-awards/.

Nearly five dozen members of the regional tourism industry gathered April 21 to prepare for the upcoming season. Customer service, marketing and industry resources were discussed, and a regional brochure exchange also took place. Northwest Nebraska, a cooperation between Dawes and Sioux counties, is coming off of its most successful tourism season. Highlights for the upcoming season include annual events such as Fur Trade Days, Crawford’s July 4 celebration and the Harvest Moon Fall Festival, as well as new additions like the Northwest Nebraska Volksmarch. The Dawes County Historical Museum will be featured on the Nebraska Passport Program and host a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, and the Museum of the Fur Trade is part of Nebraska History’s new Wander Nebraska program.

“We held our first Treasure Chest event in 2021, providing information for the upcoming tourism season and networking opportunities for businesses and attractions serving the regional tourism industry,” Rempp said. “This year’s event included expanded networking opportunities and a regional brochure exchange. We want industry representatives to have knowledge in their hands to answer traveler’s questions and provide a memorable visitor experience.”

Northwest Nebraska launches tourism industry awards program

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Governors from eight Midwest states asked the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Thursday for a permanent waiver that will allow each state to continue selling ethanol-blended gas year-round without restriction.

The EPA’s decision last week to suspend restrictions of summer sales of the lower-carbon, lower-cost E15 gasoline is temporary and only applies to the 2022 summer driving season.

E15 is usually prohibited between June 1 and Sept. 15 because of concerns that it adds to smog in high temperatures.

The bipartisan group of governors from Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and Wisconsin sent a joint letter to EPA Administrator Michael Reagan formally requesting the waiver.

“This letter sends the clear message that renewable fuels are the immediate solution to high gas prices, lower emissions, and restoring our energy independence, and we are proud to stand up and take this historic action,” said Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds.

The Renewable Fuels Association, which promotes use of ethanol, embraced the states’ action.

“These governors should be applauded for pursuing a simple regulatory solution that will allow consumers in their states to benefit from E15’s lower cost and lower emissions 365 days a year,” said Geoff Cooper, the association’s president and CEO. “Once this notification is approved by EPA, it will mean lower pump prices for drivers in these eight states, lower tailpipe pollution, a more secure energy supply, and a more vibrant rural economy.”

Earlier this month, President Joe Biden traveled to corn-rich Iowa to announce that his administration will temporarily allow E15 gas, which is blended with 15% ethanol, to be sold this summer to help ease gas prices.

Biden administration officials said the action will save drivers an average of 10 cents per gallon based on current prices, but at just 2,300 gas stations out of the nation’s more than 100,000. The affected stations are mostly in the Midwest and the South, including Texas, according to industry groups.

Crews had 88% of the Road 702 Fire contained behind fire breaks by Thursday morning, the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency said in a news release. More than 220 firefighters and other personnel&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/wildfires-fires-nebraska-weather-39706b8c0d6b94a6bd707387dc02b7ae">have been working in recent days&nbsp;</a>to dig trenches and create other breaks to contain the fire, which has burned an estimated 68 square miles of mostly grass and farm land.

Crews on Thursday were focused on containing two areas of uncontrolled burning just south of US Highway 6 along the Republican River.

Firefighters were keeping an eye on the sky for thunderstorms forecast for Thursday evening into early Friday. Officials were hoping for a wetting rain with the storms, but wary of lightning and shifting winds expected to reach up to 50 mph by Saturday, which could spark new fires and spread existing hot spots.

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. - Three Western Nebraska Community College students were recently named to the 2022 Phi Theta Kappa All-Nebraska Academic Team.&nbsp;

Maya Huirong Wilson, Jonghwa Lee, and Dahee Kang were all recognized for their academic achievements, leadership, and service by PTK, the international honor society for two-year colleges.

"We are extremely proud of our students and their accomplishments," Norman Coley, executive dean of students said. "We are grateful for the dedicated faculty and staff who work with these bright minds on a daily basis and encourage them to continue to dream and take risks."

Wilson and Lee are both students on the Scottsbluff Campus. Wilson is the President of the Lambda Pi PTK chapter and the President Elect for the Kansas/Nebraska Region. She also enjoys working with the Art Club and Esports club.&nbsp;

Along with being a member of PTK, Lee is also a Resident Assistant, a math tutor, and a student-coach on the Esports team.&nbsp;

Dahee Kang is an Aviation Maintenance student is the president of the Alpha Rho Omicron PTK chapter, a member of the&nbsp;Vic-Air Flying Club, and a Resident Assistant on the Sidney Campus.&nbsp;

CHADRON – Chadron State College sophomore Riley Snyder has earned a National Association of Music Merchants (NAMM) President’s Innovation Award. Snyder, a Music major and guitar student, will attend the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, June 3-5 with other GenNext students.

GenNext is a collaboration between the NAMM Foundation and the College Music Society offering students and faculty access to the NAMM Show. Through this collaboration, students will have the opportunity to network and learn about possible careers and internships in the music industry.

The show usually includes more than 115,000 registrants from 130 countries, one of the largest music, sound, and entertainment technology trade shows in the world, according to the NAMM website.

Snyder, a native of Rushville, Nebraska, said former Dr. Mckay Tebbs, a former Music faculty member, encouraged him to apply online for the scholarship in 2021. He received the award, but the 2021 event was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Snyder reapplied this year and received the award again.

“Dr. Tebbs has been very involved with the show and takes college students every year. He has kindly offered to take me under his wing with his current Southern Utah University students that are also attending,” Snyder said.

According to the NAMM website, the Innovation Award helps support individuals who show commitment and aptitude for business leadership and innovation in the music products industry. The award is given to students with a proven track record and commitment to excel in music. Successful applicants desire to explore career opportunities in music products, production, administration, management and/or marketing along with product creation and innovation.

“I will benefit from professional development opportunities and have access to exhibits, concerts, special events and networking sessions. I am very excited to see what opportunities are ahead,” Snyder said.

The Kansas man accused of causing the traffic death of Alliance resident Blythe Boness appeared in Box Butte County District Court Wednesday afternoon.&nbsp;&nbsp;

36-year-old Ryan McElroy entered a plea of not guilty to felony charges of Manslaughter and Motor Vehicle Homicide as well as misdemeanor counts of Third Offense Drunk Driving and Willful Reckless Driving.

McElroy remains incarcerated in the Box Butte County Jail on 10% of a $100,000 bond.

His next court appearance is set for June 29 at 1:30 pm.

The vehicle McElroy was driving collided head on with Boness on April 10 a few miles east of Alliance on Highway 2.&nbsp;&nbsp; 

Boness died at the scene while McElroy was flown to the Scottsbluff hospital for treatment.

The Dawes County 4-H canned food drive continues through April 30.&nbsp;

Dawes County 4-H, Northwest Community Action Partnership and Nebraska Extension are asking the public to donate canned and dried foods.&nbsp;

Donations can be brought to the Dawes Extension Office at 250 Main Street, Suite 8.&nbsp;

All donations will be given to Chadron Extra Helpings Food Pantry.&nbsp;

Lincoln, NEB. —&nbsp;Nebraska faced significant challenges over the past several days as multiple fires were reported in different areas of the state, many occurring simultaneously. It required the effort of several local, state and federal agencies to work together to respond and provide assistance.

The timeline and briefs below provide an overview of several incidents occurring throughout the state beginning Friday, April 22.

Elsie Fire:&nbsp;Reported to NEMA at 19:12 on 4-22-2022

Four fires near the village of Elsie, were reported to the NEMA Watch Center, primarily affecting farm and cattle grazing lands. The fires burned an estimated 4,970 acres. Four firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Perkins County made an emergency declaration on April 22.

Purdum Fire:&nbsp;Reported to NEMA at 21:48 on 4-22-2022

In Blaine County, near Purdum, five large fires were reported on April 22nd, with more than 20 volunteer fire departments responding. Three fire trucks were damaged in this nearly 30,000-acre fire, which has been contained as of April 23rd.

Cheyenne and Deuel Counties:&nbsp;Reported to NEMA at 23:52 on 4-22-2022

Three large fires broke out between Sunol and Lodge Pole, Nebraska, in Cheyenne and Deuel counties. Residents of the area were temporarily evacuated. The fires were reported contained on April 23rd.

Scotts Bluff County Fire:&nbsp;Reported to NEMA at 12:26 on 4-23-2022

Scotts Bluff County officials reported a combination of high winds, officially clocked at 83 mph Friday, and as many as nine separate fires burning. It was reported that this incident set a record for high winds in Scotts Bluff County.

There were dozens of power poles snapped, trees uprooted, five structures damaged, and uncontrolled fires burning in rural areas that caused evacuations. Upwards of 4,000 customers were without power Friday night, and crews were out Saturday morning working to restore power in the cold, blustery weather. Western Nebraska Regional Airport closed Saturday for safety reasons. This incident was reported 100 percent contained as of April 23rd.

Burt County Fire:&nbsp;Reported to NEMA at 16:49 on 4-23-2022

In Burt County, a fire was reported on April 23 at Lyons, Nebraska, which continued toward the village of Macy, which has been evacuated. Eighteen volunteer fire departments have responded to the fire, which has destroyed one fire truck and one house and has damaged three other structures. Four injuries have been reported, one requiring life flight. A county declaration was issued on April 23rd.

Tuls Dairy Calf Farm Fire – Rising City Fire:&nbsp;Reported to NEMA at 12:58 on 4-24-2022

The Tuls Dairy Calf Farm near Rising City reported a fire around noon on the 23rd. One hay barn, 100 calves and 900 calving hutches were lost. Two firefighters were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation, while several others were treated on the scene for eye irritation. The fire was caused when a front-loader bucket sparked on concrete and ignited a hay facility. Eight volunteer fire departments responded to this fire. This fire has been contained.

Road 702 Fire:&nbsp;Reported to NEMA at 23:47 on 4-22-2022

Road 702 Current Situation:

Firefighters continue to make good progress on the Road 702 Fire and additional containment is expected by end of shift this evening.&nbsp; As critical fire weather diminishes and containment increases, excess resources will be demobilized to return home or to other incidents.&nbsp; The Incident Command System is designed to easily scale up or down to address the complexities of an incident as well as the supervision and management needs.&nbsp; This includes mobilizing and demobilizing of resources and right sizing of the management team.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Rocky Mountain Complex Incident Management Team 1 (CIMT1) will be transitioning the fire to a smaller organization.&nbsp; The incoming Nebraska Incident Management Team is made up mostly of resources that are currently assigned to the incident and have been working closely with the CIMT1.&nbsp; Tomorrow will be a shadow day in which remaining tasks are discussed and passed to counterparts.&nbsp; On Friday, April 29 at 7 am, the local Type 3 Incident Management Team will assume command of the fire and will oversee the remaining work. Transitions from one management team to another frequently happen on incidents to scale the management to an appropriate level based on the size and complexity of the fire, the amount of work to be done and number/type of resources needed to do the work.&nbsp;

Extended Weather Outlook:&nbsp;&nbsp;Areas of fog may develop late Wednesday night into Thursday morning, resulting in reduced visibility as firefighters head to the fireline. Additional chances of isolated thunderstorms are expected Thursday afternoon and evening. A cold front will push through Friday bringing a wind shift from SE to NW, another threat for thunderstorms and a wetting rain.

Wildfires break out across Nebraska, Panhandle

Nebraska Game and Parks has selected Jeff Fields as the agency’s new Parks Division administrator. Fields, a native of Tilden, Nebraska, began his new duties April 11.

Fields came to the agency in 1992, working as a seasonal employee for the Resource Services Division. After working in law enforcement and park management in Iowa for several years, he returned to Game and Parks in 1998 to serve as superintendent of Ponca State Park. In 2017, he became the regional park superintendent for the northeast parks region.

“My life’s passion is to provide opportunities for the public to experience and learn about Nebraska’s natural, recreational and cultural resources,” Fields said. “I am honored to lead an outstanding team of staff, volunteers and partners as we strive to fulfill this mission.”

Said Deputy Director Jim Swenson: “Jeff brings an impressive resume of achievements, leadership skills and partnership development that will allow him to collaborate with the agency team and partners as we work to conserve and protect our natural, cultural and recreational resources. Game and Parks names Fields Parks Division administrator

SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.&nbsp; — Friends and family gathered today in Scottsbluff as the Nebraska State Patrol and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office honored three citizen heroes who saved the life of a Scotts Bluff County Deputy last week.

Kealan Hawley, Robert Regester, and Keagan Shifflett each witnessed a Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office patrol vehicle crash and catch on fire at approximately 7:20 a.m. MT on April 18 in Scottsbluff. Deputy Josh Ruzicka, 39, of Gering, had suffered a medical incident while driving on Highway 71, south of the Highway 26 junction. His patrol vehicle left the roadway, struck an embankment, and caught fire.

Hawley, Regester, and Shifflett all responded and found Deputy Ruzicka unconscious inside the burning vehicle. They were able to break the window and pull Deputy Ruzicka to safety.

“You responded immediately,” Sheriff Mark Overman said to the three heroes. “With no regard for your own safety, you forced your way into the burning vehicle and extricated the deputy, moving him to safety. We are eternally grateful for the selflessness and bravery that you have showed to save a life.”

“Normally we present life saver awards to our troopers who are involved in incidents like this, but it’s really special when we get a chance to honor our citizens who decided to step up and take action,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “The actions of these three heroes showed courage and boldness during an emergency situation. It is with deep appreciation this award is presented to these three gentlemen.”

Deputy Ruzicka has recovered and was on hand to help present the awards to all three heroes.
