MAXWELL, Neb.-The driver of a concrete truck was transported to the hospital following a single-vehicle accident on US Highway 30 near Maxwell.

The accident happened at around 10:20 am on Tuesday.

Seargent Dan Newton with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office said the driver was traveling eastbound when he failed to negotiate the turn at Highway 30 and Old Highway 30.

The driver was trapped in the vehicle for about an hour before being removed and transported to Great Plains Health in North Platte via Great Plains Health LifeNet helicopter.

The driver's injuries are unknown at this time.

The accident closed a portion of Highway 30 for about an hour.

North Platte Fire and Rescue, Maxwell Fire and Rescue and the Lincoln County Sheriff's responded to the scene.

To protect the safety of patients and staff, Chadron Community Hospital and Health Services will limit patients to one visitor, effective immediately.  Visitation is not allowed for patients with confirmed or suspected COVID‐19. In addition, emergency department visitation is at the discretion of the ED provider. 

At Chadron Community Hospital and Health Services, we are practicing universal masking. Upon arrival, patients and visitors will be screened and given a face covering when entering the hospital. It is expected that the visitor will keep their face covered during the duration of their visit. 

We are grateful for our community and their continued support during this time. We understand that these restrictions are difficult for patients and their loved ones. We are taking these necessary steps to protect our patients, our staff, and our community.

Chadron Community Hospital updates visitor restrictions

CHADRON - Chadron State College student Natalie Boyd is the Project Strive/TRiO Student of the Month for September. Boyd, a senior from Stratton, Nebraska, said she chose Chadron State College because of its exceptional Justice Studies program. She also liked that CSC is just a short drive to Custer State Park because she enjoys hiking and being outside.&nbsp;

Boyd is a Legal Studies and History major, and a member of the Rural Law Opportunities Program (RLOP). After graduating, Boyd plans to attend law school. She is still unsure what area of law she plans to enter, but she has considered criminal defense law after interning with the public defender in Chadron. She enjoys this area of law because she feels people should have access to competent defense, regardless of their ability to pay.&nbsp;

Boyd is also a member of Student Senate, an event coordinator of Zeta Alpha Kappa (ZAK), a peer mentor in the Learning Lab and the&nbsp;Campus Activity Board (CAB) representative for the United Club.

ZAK is working with the DOVES Program to aid victims of sexual assault, which is important to Boyd.

“As a part of ZAK, I have the opportunity to raise awareness for the DOVES Program. It’s important for people to not only know that there are resources available to them, but also how to access those resources,” Boyd said. “Educating people is our goal.”

Justice Studies Professor Dr. Lissette Leesch recognizes Boyd’s contributions to the community and the classroom.

“The Justice Studies faculty is delighted that Natalie is the September TRiO Student of the Month. Natalie is a bright and witty addition to both the classroom and the campus community.&nbsp; She doesn’t hesitate to volunteer her time and, as a Student Senator-at-Large, her decision-making is governed by a genuine regard for her fellow students. This recognition is well-deserved,” Leesch said.

Jennifer Schaer, director of TRiO, is pleased with Boyd’s involvement in Project Strive.

“Natalie has been a valuable member of Project Strive. She is always willing to go above and beyond to help the students and the program. This last summer, she was the main speaker for our video and she did a wonderful job. It has been great to watch her grow and learn as a student,” Schaer said.&nbsp;

When Boyd isn’t in school or participating in something on campus, she enjoys reading. One of her recent favorites is Normal People by Sally Rooney. Although this book doesn’t pertain to the sci-fi genre she usually finds herself reading, she found it fascinating because it presents a lot of information about mental health, which is important to Boyd.

Update 12:40 p.m. from Great Plains Fire District in South Dakota

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A grass fire north of Rapid City is growing in size and prompting officials to warn additional residents they may need to evacuate. 

Abnormally high temperatures, gusty winds and extremely dry conditions fueled a fire that began Monday afternoon.

By Monday evening, the fire torched between 250 and 300 acres and the burn is uncontained. 

Rapid City police helped evacuate the Marvel Mountain neighborhood earlier Monday and helped divert traffic around road closures. 

An unknown number of residents were evacuated. 

It’s not known what ignited the fired and so far, no structures have been damaged.

Rainbow trout stockings scheduled this fall in Panhandle

CHADRON – The Fall 2021 Graves Lecture will include a variety of topics from predictors of stress in first-generation students, to history recorded through a quilt, to the Holocaust. The presenters are Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht, Tena Cook, Dr. David Nesheim, Dr. Kim Madsen, and Mary Traphagan.

Each lecture will begin at 7 p.m. in the Mari Sandoz Atrium High Plains Heritage Center. These events are free and open to the public.

The series will begin Oct. 12 with “Predictors of Stress in First-Generations Students” by Helmbrecht, an assistant professor in the Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Department. Helmbrecht will discuss her doctoral dissertation study of first-generation college students at Chadron State College and factors that predict stress levels. She will also demonstrate stress management techniques.

On Oct. 26, a panel consisting of Cook, College Relations Marketing Coordinator, Madsen, Family, and Consumer Sciences Professor, and Nesheim, Social Sciences Associate Professor, will present “A Stitch in Time: 1938 Air Mail Quilt.” In 1938, Cook’s grandmother designed, sewed, and embroidered a quilt to commemorate National Air Mail Week. In addition to answering questions about the quilt, Cook will share paper patterns made from cachet envelopes. Madsen will share expertise about hand crafted textiles, and Nesheim will provide information about the historical context of Air Mail.

The series will conclude Nov. 9 with Traphagan, a Chadron Middle School Social Sciences Teacher, who will present “The Holocaust Past and Present.” She will discuss the history of the Holocaust, the Nazi Germany practices of ethnic purification, and the devasting effects on survivors and their families.

Fall 2021 Graves Lecture Series begins Oct. 12 in Chadron 

Mitchell resident, Sylvia Flores Magdaleno, tragically lost her 41-year-old son to COVID in August. She recently shared a message with others in honor of her son Diego.

Diego was not vaccinated and since his death, her family, including grandchildren age 12 or older, have gotten vaccinated for COVID. Not just for Diego, but for themselves too.

“My heart is praying when hearing this message to go get vaccinated. With COVID case counts on the rise again, it is more important now than ever to obtain your vaccination. Don't be a statistic. Don't let your loved ones be a statistic,” Magdaleno pleaded.

She continued on, “My reality forever changed. Diego won't call me again. Diego won't text me again.&nbsp;I will never hear, ‘I love you Mom,’ again.”

<a>“Yes, it may be scary or feel unsure but worse than that is planning a funeral. Get vaccinated. It saves lives and is free of charge,” Magdaleno shared. “Let's fight together, moving forward together, and not lose one more death to COVID. You are worth it.”&nbsp;</a>

PPHD: 388 more virus cases reported, resident loses 41-year-old son

The Upper Niobrara White Natural Resources District (UNWNRD) along with the Natural Resource Conservation Service (NRCS) partnered to host the Area 1 Range Judging Contest held on Sept. 15 near Alliance. 

The Range Judging Contest allows participants to test their knowledge of range plants and specific major land resource areas (MLRA’s) within a topographic region. Within each Area’s contest, participants are asked to identify a total of 24 plants as well as answer questions regarding the chosen MLRA sites. 

There are a total of six Area Contests held each fall across the state of Nebraska.

The contest is divided into three divisions: Senior division is categorized as those participants that are a high school junior or senior; Junior division is categorized as those participants that are either a sophomore of below in class standing; and the adult division are those contestants who have graduated from high school. The Area 1 Range Judging contest hosted 10 schools including a total of 106 participants (25 seniors, 75 juniors and 6 in the adult division).

· Sidney High School was the Champion team,

· Banner County FFA was the Reserve team,

Contestants’ scores were then calculated into individual scores;

Students utilized their knowledge and had an enjoyable time testing their abilities at plant identification.”

&nbsp;ALLIANCE – Candidate and Little Sister applications are now available for the 2022 Best of the West competition to be held Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 6 P.M. at the Alliance High School PAC.&nbsp; &nbsp;Formerly the Miss Alliance/Miss Chadron Miss and Outstanding Teen pageant, the Best of the West competition is excited to be back after taking a year off due to Covid. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The teen competition is open to all female Nebraska residents who are at least 13 years old (by June, 2022) and no older than 17 and actively enrolled in high school by June of 2022.&nbsp; The miss competition is open to all female Nebraska residents who are at least 17 years old by June 2022 and a high school graduate and no older than 26 by December 2022.&nbsp;

This year, teen and miss candidates will be judged based on interview, talent, eveningwear on-stage question with teens competing in physical fitness and miss in a separate social impact statement competition.&nbsp; There will also be a separate overall community service competition, audience choice award, and Miss Congeniality voting that do not count in the overall scoring.&nbsp; A silent auction will also take place during the competition.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Best of the West competition is an official local under the Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen Competition.&nbsp; It is designed to promote scholastic achievement, creative accomplishment, healthy living and community involvement for America's young women.&nbsp;&nbsp; Along with scholarships, crowns and prizes, the winners of the Best of the West competition will compete for the title of Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska’s Outstanding Teen in June, 2022. &nbsp;

The competition is also seeking girls ages kindergarten through 5th&nbsp;grade to participate in our Little Sister program.&nbsp; Little sisters will be paired with the contestants for the competition and will dance on stage and escort their contestant during eveningwear.&nbsp;

Best of the West competition to be held after year hiatus

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Dozens of National Guard members from South Dakota will answer a call from the Pentagon to help at the country’s southern border. 

One-hundred-twenty-five members of the 1742nd Transportation Company will be deployed for 9 to 12 months. 

Gov. Kristi Noem, Sens. John Thune and Mike Round and Rep. Dusty Johnson were on hand for an activation ceremony Sunday at the University of Sioux Fall.

 Thune says the soldiers will try to reinforce the border and establish some order and stability in a humanitarian way. 

In July, Noem sent 50 South Dakota soldiers to the border following Texas Gov. Greg Abbott’s request for help.

Eagle Radio and Chadron State Athletics are hosting their second CSC Sports Road Show this week at The Ridge in Downtown Chadron!&nbsp;

Wednesday, October 6, the CSC Sports&nbsp;Road&nbsp;Show&nbsp;presented by Security First Bank will be held at The Ridge in downtown Chadron offering Eagle fans,&nbsp;Double&nbsp;Q&nbsp;Country&nbsp;listeners and area residents the opportunity to come out and enjoy a Business-After-Hours style evening while getting to visit with CSC coaches, players and fellow fans. This casual, free event will begin at 5:30 pm and run through 7:30 pm with attendees invited to come and go as their schedules allow.

In addition, attendees can watch as Voice of the Eagles Dave Collins will be hosting a one-hour live radio&nbsp;show&nbsp;from 6:00 to 7:00 interviewing guests on 97.5 FM and 105.9 FM.&nbsp; Confirmed guests for this week's radio program include former CSC offensive lineman and NFL player Garrett Gilkey, wrestling head coach Brett Hunter, women's golfer and wrestler Kinsey Smith, and CSC football offensive lineman Jake Norris. 

CSC representatives will likely make&nbsp;appearances&nbsp;during the evening to mingle and visit among the crowd.

Door prizes will be given away during the night including CSC game tickets!

In its first year the CSC Sports&nbsp;Road&nbsp;Show&nbsp;is&nbsp;a once-a-month event that debuted in September and will be held once per month through April of 2022. Double Q County & CSC team up for second radio road show this week in Chadron

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — The trial of a man accused in a fatal shooting in Rapid City more than three years ago continues Monday in Pennington County. 

Seventeen-year-old Ronald Black Cloud is being tried in adult court for second-degree murder in the death of 43-year-old Nathan Graham. 

The victim's  widow, Shayla Colbert-Graham, testified two of her son's friend showed up at the house the night of Aug. 17, 2018. 

Graham got in a shoving match with one of them, Ross Johnson, after telling them to leave. 

Johnson was armed and gave his gun to Black Cloud with instructions to shoot Graham. 

Johnson was earlier sentenced to 20 years in prison on felony charges in connection with the shooting.

Sandhills Global, which is based in Lincoln, told its customers that its operations were disrupted by a ransomware attack, and it had shut down several systems temporarily to protect data. 

Publications operated by Sandhills that were not available online Sunday include Truck Paper, TractorHouse, AuctionTime, Machinery Trader, ForestryTrader, HiBid, RentalYard, Motorsports Universe, CraneTrader, MarketBook, RV Universe, Oil Field Trader, Aircraft, LiveStockMarket, Controller and Aircraft.com. 

The company said it had hired cybersecurity experts to help it respond to the attack, and Sandhills continues to investigate whether any client data had been accessed.

Nebraska firm says ransomware knocks its websites offline

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — A Nebraska woman who is believed by many to be the oldest living American has celebrated her 115th birthday.

 The Omaha World-Herald reports that Thelma Sutcliffe marked her birthday quietly on Friday at the facility where she lives in Omaha.

 Sutcliffe was born Oct. 1, 1906, in Benson, Nebraska (now part of Omaha).

The Gerontology Research Group says Sutcliffe became the nation’s oldest living person on April 17 when Hester Ford died in North Carolina at age 115. 

The oldest person in the world is believed to be 118-year-old Kane Tanaka of Japan.

DENVER – FEMA has approved more than $2.7 million in additional Public Assistance funding for the COVID-19 response in Wyoming. The assistance was made available under a major disaster declaration issued April 11, 2020. FEMA has provided more than $46.3 million for the Wyoming COVID-19 response to date.

The $2.7 million was provided to the Wyoming Department of Health to support the state’s COVID testing activities, including flex swabs, vials, lab collection and transport systems.

For the COVID-19 response, FEMA has simplified the Public Assistance application and funding process to address the magnitude of this event and to allow local officials to receive eligible funding more quickly. These reimbursements play a critical role as state, tribal and local officials work tirelessly to assist their communities during this response.
