RENO, Nev. (AP) — The U.S. Supreme Court has refused a rural Nevada church’s request to weigh in on a legal battle over the government’s authority to limit the size of religious gatherings. 

The high court on Monday denied Calvary Chapel Dayton Valley's petition seeking to review the case on its merits. 

Attorneys general from 19 other states had recently joined in support of the church east of Reno. 

They were urging the Supreme Court to rule on the Nevada case to help bring uniformity to various standards courts across the country have used to balance the interests of public safety and freedom of religion.

The Alliance Police Department and the Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office have been made aware of a possible scam occurring in the city and county regarding firearms.&nbsp;

There are reports that “Federal Boys” or federal agents are in the area confiscating firearms, and all gun-related material including reloading equipment. 

Allegedly individuals claim they will reimburse citizens for their equipment.

“The Box Butte County Sheriff’s Office and the Alliance Police Department are working closely together," said Philip Lukens, Alliance Police Chief. "We have verified with the FBI, no federal agencies are seeking firearms. We take these allegations seriously and want to caution the public to always reach out to their local law enforcement agency for verification before ever turning over firearms. Organized crime groups purport themselves in various facets to illegally obtain firearms to further commit crimes. It is our sincere desire to keep firearms in the hands of responsible citizens. Should anyone come to your residence or contact you regarding your firearms please contact the police immediately.”

Firearms confiscation scam in Alliance, Box Butte Co. 

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Gov. Pete Ricketts is defending Nebraska’s approach to distributing coronavirus vaccines, saying the state won’t redirect doses away from rural areas that are outpacing Omaha and Lincoln with vaccinations. 

State officials reported Friday that 15 rural public health districts in Nebraska have already finished the first phase of vaccinations, which focused on front-line health workers. 

Those districts are now vaccinating the next high-priority group, consisting largely of residents who are at least 65 years old.

 The public health districts encompassing Omaha and Lincoln are still working through the initial phase and won’t shift to the next group until next week. 

Ricketts says Nebraska distributed vaccines based on the populations that are most affected by the pandemic.

Officials are urging people to stay off the roads.

Celebrate 'National Plan for Vacation Day' with Nebraska Tourism

LINCOLN – Gov. Pete Ricketts has appointed Ken Curry of Columbus, a corporate leader in public power and customer care, to the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to represent District 3 (northeast Nebraska).

Curry is vice president of customer services and chief customer officer for Nebraska Public Power District, which sells power to customers in all or part of 86 of Nebraska’s 93 counties.

“My role is to focus on the customer and to do the very best for the customers and to bring them the services they are looking for at a very affordable cost,” Curry said. He sees that translating to his role on the Commission, which he said already provides outstanding customer service, in his ability to continue to improve those services with Nebraskans.

Curry was an Eagle Scout and is now the father of two Eagle Scouts. “I grew up loving the outdoors, and my dad introduced me to all kinds of great outdoor experiences. Growing up in the outdoors is beneficial to our kids and families.”

With an interest in youth outdoor activities, Curry says his new role fits perfectly. “Supporting the outdoors, supporting new generations getting exposure to the outdoors and the youth aspects are very appealing to me,” he said.

Curry’s appointment, subject to approval by the Nebraska Legislature, will be effective through Jan. 15, 2025. He succeeds Jim Ernst of Columbus on the board.

“I’m truly honored to be appointed to this role by the Governor and extremely excited to serve,” Curry said. “The Game and Parks Commission is a great organization, and I look forward to supporting the team and helping move the agency forward.”

Governor appoints Curry to Game and Parks Commission

LINCOLN – The 2021 mountain lion hunting season in the Pine Ridge closed Jan. 24 when the harvest limit of four (three males and one female) was met. Season 1 opened Jan. 2.

The harvest of mountain lions allows the population to remain resilient and healthy, while halting growth or moderately reducing the population size. This maintains the population density in the Pine Ridge at a similar level to that of other states that allow mountain lion hunting.

Charcoal is not a dirty word

CHADRON – More than 190 students from 25 high schools will participate in the Best of the West Business invitational Jan. 26-28, co-hosted by Chadron State College and the Nebraska Council on Economic Education.

The competition includes written tests in nine subjects: Accounting, Business Calculations, Business Communications, Economics, Introduction to Business, Introduction to FBLA, Introduction to Financial Math, Marketing, and Personal Finance.

The job interview contest for seniors will be judged by CSC business faculty members Dr. Richard Koza, Chris McCarthy, and Terrie Wood.

CSC students from the local student business organization, Phi Beta Lambda of Chadron, will assist with the event and provide logistical support. Phi Beta Lambda is the collegiate, postsecondary division of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The competition is sponsored by First National Bank of Omaha in Chadron.

Dusek said the competition will follow FBLA rules, so the experience will serve to prepare students for the virtual FBLA State Leadership Conference in April.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that St. Francis Ministries interim CEO William Clark told Nebraska lawmakers Friday that the nonprofit needs another $25 million to cover its costs for this year and about $10 million to cover a shortfall for the fiscal year that ended June 30. 

Dannette Smith, the CEO of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, said the state is pursuing the new agreement to maintain continuity.

LINCOLN&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol (NSP) and Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) are urging caution ahead to another round of severe winter weather that will affect much of the state. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning and Winter Weather Advisory that include most of the state’s most-traveled roadways, including over 350 miles of Interstate 80.

“This storm has the potential to have a major&nbsp;impact on travel throughout the state,” said Colonel John Bolduc, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “The best way to stay safe during a winter storm is to make the important determination if travel is even necessary. If you have to travel, be prepared for adverse driving conditions and follow safe winter driving practices.”

Travelers are advised to be alert, be aware, and check the most up to date travel conditions available through 511, Nebraska’s Advanced Traveler Information System. The system is available at all times via phone by, online at&nbsp;<a href="http://www.511.nebraska.gov/" target="_blank">www.511.nebraska.gov</a>, Nebraska 511’s smartphone app or by dialing 511. Travelers are also encouraged to utilize NDOT’s Plow Tracker at&nbsp;<a href="https://plows.nebraska.gov/index.html" target="_blank">https://plows.nebraska.gov/index.html</a>&nbsp;where the public will be able to observe road conditions in real time from the cabs of NDOT Snow Plows. Please note that weather conditions are often worse than they appear on camera.

State health officials and Gov. Pete Ricketts say they’re receiving 94,000 vaccinations a month from the federal government.

 Nebraska has been vaccinating front-line health care workers and people with ties to long-term care facilities. 

Under the state’s distribution plan, the next in line are an estimated 500,000 residents who are at least 65 years old or have certain health conditions. 

State officials predict that 75% of that group will get a vaccine. 

That translates into a four-month wait for everyone else unless Nebraska starts receiving more shipments.

Lincoln — &nbsp;Work on the first Super 2 highway in Nebraska is progressing on schedule, with the majority of the work completed on the 10-mile segment of US-83 between mile markers 35 and 45 by Frazier Creek in Frontier County, according to District 7 Construction Engineer Drew Wilson. Work began in the spring of 2020 on the first of six projects that will be part of the US-83 Super 2.

“The project is all, but finished up,” said Wilson. “After all the planning and public interest, it is exciting for those involved to see what a portion of the Super 2 is going to look like.”

“The signature feature of the Super 2 is the addition of passing lanes spread out along the project,” said Wilson. “These passing lanes were added in an effort to provide more passing opportunities and are currently open to the public. As originally planned, there will be several items that will need be completed in the spring of 2021, including flumes and seeding.”

The entire 12-year project stretches over 60 miles from McCook to North Platte. US-83 will continue to be a two-lane highway but will have 16 passing lanes – eight in each direction – to facilitate traffic flow. The project also includes resurfacing, restoration, and rehabilitation of the existing roadway in six phases.

The funding for this project and a number of other projects across the state results from the Build Nebraska Act. Enacted by the state legislature in 2011, the law reassigned one-fourth of one cent of general state sales tax receipts over a 20-year period to road and street construction.

"As far as professionalism, ability...I think those are the things our area has needed and now we've got that opportunity for our clients. This is a whole new level of expertise."

Robert Adair worked in video production with Cabela's for about 15 years traveling all over the world.&nbsp;

"Being employed with Cabela's...that type of company with the investment they made in him for that many years shows a lot of&nbsp;credibility to his skill set," Carlini added. "I think those are the main things that we want and need in our area. He's a phone call away from being here the next day, which is kind of nice. Instead of waiting for three or four days...or setting something up a month in advance, we can roll it out quick."

Adair said he started out with Cabela's filming their hunting and fishing TV shows.&nbsp;

"It was a wonderful experience because I got to travel the world and got to fulfil a lot of bucket lists," said Adair. "I've been to Africa twice and New Zealand. In Africa we were hunting plains game. Probably one of the most exciting hunts was a Cape Buffalo hunt. It was the real deal. A lot of times you go to South Africa and it's kind of high tense, but this was in&nbsp; Zimbabwe. There are no fences. We had leopard come through our camp. The Cape Buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. It was pretty&nbsp;exhilarating. That was just&nbsp;archery hunts in South Africa."

Adair has also been to Panama twice, Turkey and New Zealand.&nbsp;

"The place we were at was for marlins," Adair added. "There's four or five species of marlin. Guys that have money go down there to fulfill a bucket list. Hopefully catching all five in one trip. I was in Turkey with a guy hunting Ibex [Bezoar]. I went to New Zealand and we hunted Stag, Red Deer and Fallow Deer."

Adair said his Father always said, "All good things come to an end." Cabela's was becoming bigger and decided to not continue to create their own TV shows.&nbsp;

Adair went on to say outdoor TV started to change as well. Instead of being more informative, it became more entertainment with personalities.&nbsp;

"Our new CEO at that time was really into internal communications so we did a lot of internal communications video," said Adair. "A lot of product videos, which still got me out and about...not around the world, but around the country. A lot of the product videos we did were literally in the field. I mean if it were Water Fowl hunting...we were down west of Wichita [Kansas]. It's one of the most premier Water Fowling hunting&nbsp;destinations in the country. We were filming product videos there for about a week. It was pretty cool. We'd gone to Arizona for some of our active wear stuff during the winter time."&nbsp;

Cabela's was then bought out by Bass Pro Shops. 

Adair said it was a shock to a lot of employees who had been with Cabela's for a long time. They had sold their marketing department including video to Quad Graphics. Adair worked for them for a number of years and then moved into free lance video work. After that he got out of video production for awhile working for&nbsp;Capital Business Systems as a&nbsp;Electromechanical Technician.&nbsp;

"As a world-class videographer Robert Adair brings a skill set into the Panhandle for our customers that we've never really had," said Dave Feddersen, Alliance/Chadron Digital Sales Manager. "Truly he's seen and done things...just his experience and skill set is going to open up a door for many opportunities just not for us, but for local and regional businesses. He's going to add some true value to some of their brand and marketing campaigns. His relationship building skills, his people skills...I mean he's just a good dude from the heartland that's literally one of the best in the world."

Adair said he's really excited to have joined Eagle Communications.&nbsp;

"Just the excitement that everybody has, it's pretty cool," said Adair. "Just listening to everybody and what's going on for just the short time that I've been here, it's just exciting. It sounds like it's going to bring a lot of new experiences for me."

Instead of waiting for three or four days...or setting something up a month in advance, we can roll it out quick."Adair said he started out with Cabela's filming their hunting and fishing TV shows.&nbsp;"It was a wonderful experience because I got to travel the world and got to fulfil a lot of bucket lists," said Adair. "I've been to Africa twice and New Zealand. In Africa we were hunting plains game. Probably one of the most exciting hunts was a Cape Buffalo hunt. It was the real deal. A lot of times you go to South Africa and it's kind of high tense, but this was in&nbsp; Zimbabwe. There are no fences. We had leopard come through our camp. The Cape Buffalo is one of the most dangerous animals in Africa. It was pretty&nbsp;exhilarating. That was just&nbsp;archery hunts in South Africa."Adair has also been to Panama twice, Turkey and New Zealand.&nbsp;"The place we were at was for marlins," Adair added. "There's four or five species of marlin. Guys that have money go down there to fulfill a bucket list. Hopefully catching all five in one trip. I was in Turkey with a guy hunting Ibex [Bezoar]. I went to New Zealand and we hunted Stag, Red Deer and Fallow Deer."Adair said his Father always said, "All good things come to an end." Cabela's was becoming bigger and decided to not continue to create their own TV shows.&nbsp;Adair went on to say outdoor TV started to change as well. Instead of being more informative, it became more entertainment with personalities.&nbsp;"Our new CEO at that time was really into internal communications so we did a lot of internal communications video," said Adair. "A lot of product videos, which still got me out and about...not around the world, but around the country. A lot of the product videos we did were literally in the field. I mean if it were Water Fowl hunting...we were down west of Wichita [Kansas]. It's one of the most premier Water Fowling hunting&nbsp;destinations in the country. We were filming product videos there for about a week. It was pretty cool. We'd gone to Arizona for some of our active wear stuff during the winter time."&nbsp;Cabela's was then bought out by Bass Pro Shops. Adair said it was a shock to a lot of employees who had been with Cabela's for a long time. They had sold their marketing department including video to Quad Graphics. Adair worked for them for a number of years and then moved into free lance video work. After that he got out of video production for awhile working for&nbsp;Capital Business Systems as a&nbsp;Electromechanical Technician.&nbsp;"As a world-class videographer Robert Adair brings a skill set into the Panhandle for our customers that we've never really had," said Dave Feddersen, Alliance/Chadron Digital Sales Manager. Eagle adds video production to Nebraska markets with Robert Adair

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — A New York City man accused of killing three people in Rapid City made his first appearance in Pennington County Court, nearly five months after the alleged triple homicide. Thirty-six-year-old Arnson Absolu is charged with three counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Charles Red Willow, Ashley Nagy and Dakota Zaiser. 

Red Willow, a 26-year-old from Rapid City, and Nagy, a 29-year-old from Greeley, Colorado, were found dead Aug. 24 from multiple bullet wounds inside a car at the park. 

The body of the 22-year-old Zaiser, of Rapid City was found in some woods outside the city about a month later. 

Police have said all three killings may be related to drugs.

He says the contract will allow state administrators to recognize workers for excellence in work.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) — Donald Trump’s presidency ended just two days ago, but the City of Presidents organization is already working on adding his statue in downtown Rapid City. 

Dallerie Davis, co-founder and artist liaison for the organization, says the project is in the concept stage and that they plan to incorporate a couple of Trump’s distinctive trademarks _ his unusual hairstyle and tweeting, one of his preferred methods of communication. 

A location has not yet been selected for the nation’s 45th president. 

Davis said the City of Presidents has more than 80 street corners to pick. 

The organization has not announced the artist who will create the bronze statue.

City of Presidents already working on adding Trump statue in Rapid City

LINCOLN, Neb. – Beginning Feb. 1, guests can make camping reservations up to 180 days in advance of arrival for stays at Nebraska state park and recreation areas.

Guests will be able to book stays for a maximum of 14 days, and will have the ability to make multiple reservations for eligible sites and dates.

There is no change to the cabin and lodge room reservation booking window. It remains at a year to date.

In addition to reservable campsites, first-come, first-served campsites are available year-round at all park locations.

The 180-day booking window was determined based on current public health conditions and takes into account statewide and nationwide reservation trends and public input. This new reservation window will be evaluated throughout 2021 and may be adjusted in the future.

Adjustments due to COVID-19 previously had limited the reservation booking window in an effort to increase camping opportunity and satisfy the increased demand for outdoor recreation that resulted from the novel disease.

“We appreciate the public’s understanding of that action, and we feel rewarded in knowing that the parks are recognized as important and favored destinations,” said Parks Division Administrator Jim Swenson.

Lawmakers voted 30-19 against the motion to change the Legislature’s internal rules. 

Committee chairs and the speaker of the Legislature are elected through a secret ballot. 

Supporters of the 50-year-old system say it minimizes the influence of partisanship in the officially nonpartisan Legislature, allowing lawmakers to elect the person they consider most-qualified for the job without pressure to vote for a member of their own party.

 Critics counter that the system encourages backroom deals and vote-trading from senators who are trying to win a chairmanship.
