The first human cases of West Nile virus this season have been confirmed, with three cases identified in the Panhandle. This summer, 40 mosquito samples from the Panhandle have tested positive for West Nile Virus, indicating an increased risk of transmission to humans. Additionally, a sample from Scotts Bluff County recently tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis virus. Health officials urge residents to take proper precautions to protect themselves and reduce the risk of infection.

“Prevention is the most effective defense against most mosquito transmitted diseases,” said Melissa Haas, Environmental Health Coordinator at PPHD. “By taking simple steps to avoid mosquito bites, people can significantly reduce their risk of infection.”

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. While many people infected with the virus may not experience symptoms, others may develop severe neurological illnesses, including encephalitis – a potentially life-threatening inflammation of the brain.

Similarly, St. Louis Encephalitis is also transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms are essentially the same as West Nile virus, with many again not knowing they have been infected. Severe cases of St. Louis Encephalitis can experience encephalitis and meningitis, which is a swelling of the spinal cord.

Tips to Prevent Mosquito Bites - Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthol-diol. Always follow the label instructions. -&nbsp;Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. - Install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of homes. - Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed – including in flower pots, bird baths, pet dishes, old tires, and clogged gutters. - Use air conditioning or keep windows closed if screens are not available. - If you have found a dead bird on your property, you can report it online through Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services: https://epi- dhhs.ne.gov/redcap/surveys/?s=E78D8A3JK4343E4X.

West Nile Virus Reported and St. Louis Encephalitis in the Panhandle

The state of Nebraska is providing resources to assist in recovery operations at the Horizon Biofuels plant in Fremont. Three people, an adult and two children, have been missing since an explosion at the plant yesterday. A fire continues to burn at the structure.

Fourteen members of Nebraska Task Force One (NE-TF1) have been activated, including personnel with expertise in structural issues and a canine team. The group is also transporting equipment to the location that can be utilized should it become necessary.&nbsp; They will join other emergency response teams that remain on the scene, including multiple law enforcement and fire departments. Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol continue to provide traffic control around the area. Representatives from the state Fire Marshal’s office are there as well.

Activation of NE-TF1 was authorized by Adjutant General Craig Strong, director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Nebraska’s Emergency Management Act allows for the deployment of resources in response to emergencies and disasters.

Gov. Jim Pillen expressed his deep appreciation to the numerous agencies that have responded since yesterday.

“This is obviously a difficult situation for the community and those first responders who are working diligently at the scene,” said Gov. Pillen. “Suzanne and I continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of those who were in the plant at the time of this tragic incident.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Humanities Nebraska (HN) is bringing “Weaving a Nation” Nebraska Chautauqua to Gering and Scottsbluff next week. This Chautauqua is will offer many different opportunities to hear and experience the lesser-known stories of the founding of our nation. It is presented by HN with local partners including Legacy of the Plains Museum, Midwest Theater, Gering Public Library, Lied Scottsbluff Public Library, Gering Visitors Bureau, Scotts Bluff Area Visitors Bureau, Scotts Bluff County Fair, West Nebraska Arts Center, the City of Gering and the City of Scottsbluff.

“This Chautauqua will include stories that are rarely — or never — covered in school,” said HN Program Manager Kristi Hayek Carley. “Our nation’s history is so complex, with so many different people contributing in different ways. I think audiences will never look at the Continental Congress the same way after hearing Abigail Adams’ story or think of the Lewis &amp; Clark expedition the same way after getting the perspectives of Sacagawea and others who also went on that journey. Every event is going to be an eye-opener.”

“Weaving a Nation” is in commemoration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and our evolving vision of democracy. During a span of more than 40 years, the Nebraska Chautauqua has visited 41 different communities (many of them multiple times) and has explored 15 different themes. The last time the North Platte Valley hosted the Nebraska Chautauqua was in 2014.

Beginning earlier this summer, pre-Chautauqua events have been held in partnership with Katahdin Daughters of the American Revolution, Nebraska Daughters of the American Revolution, Nebraska Sons of the American Revolution, Gering Public Library Foundation, Lied Scottsbluff Public Library, Gering City Band, Scotts Bluff County Fair, the City of Scottsbluff and the City of Gering.

Humanities Nebraska is a private nonprofit with a mission to help people explore what connects us and makes us human. “Weaving a Nation” Offers Variety of Activities  Aug. 8 & 9 in Gering & Scottsbluff

LINCOLN, NE –&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen has announced that small businesses, nonprofits and residents in a handful of Nebraska counties are eligible to apply for low interest loans administered through the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), as a result of a severe storms and flooding that occurred June 25 – 26. The SBA has granted a disaster declaration that was submitted by Gov. Pillen on July 24. The affected counties include Adams, Buffalo, Hall, Hamilton, Howard and Merrick.

“I’m grateful to the SBA for recognizing the extreme damage that resulted from that particular storm,” said Gov. Pillen. “This disaster declaration will help businesses and homeowners in the affected communities get the assistance they need to get back on their feet.”

Starting July 30 at Noon, customer service representatives will be on hand at the Disaster Loan Outreach Center located in Grand Island to help answer questions about the SBA disaster loan program and assist with the application process.

A variety of loan types are available. Businesses and nonprofits can apply to replace damaged or destroyed real estate, machinery, equipment, inventory and other business assets. Homeowners and renters can also apply for loans related to the repair or replacement of personal property. Additionally, the Economic Injury Disaster Loan (EIDL) can help cover things like bills, payroll and other capital needs directly resulting from the storms and flooding.

The SBA has granted a disaster declaration that was submitted by Gov. Pillen on July 24. For Brent Bauer, football has been his life. For over two decades, he could be seen on the sidelines under the Friday night lights, watching his vision for his team play out on the field in front of him. Now, he is set to take on a new role at a new school.

After nearly 10 years as the head football coach at Ogallala High School, Bauer is only about a month out from his first Fall season as Activities Director for Alliance High School. This new role will allow him to have a different perspective and have more oversight over the wide variety of extracurricular activities AHS provides its students with. Bauer said a big reason for the move came with off the field priorities in mind.

"The bottom line to this transition for us was that my kids kind of needed a dad more than they needed a football coach," said the new Alliance High School Activities Director.

"I've been able to focus on being a better father and being a better husband. I'm not sure how much gains I've made in those departments, but it's been intentional to say the least."

Bauer comes to Alliance after a solid eight season stint as the head football coach in Ogallala. With three winning seasons, and four years with a record of .500 or better, Bauer's time in Ogallala can be seen as a success. The decision to come to Alliance, specifically, had a lot to do with his personal ties to the town.

"We've got some really close friends that have been in my life for a long, long time, and they're from Alliance," said the Pleasanton, Nebraska-native.

"They always spoke so highly of the community and the history here. So that was something that really made it appealing."

With so many years as a coach, Bauer said he is excited to take on this new challenge where he is responsible for more than just his team.

"That's something I really value, is being involved with an entire activity department," said Bauer.

"Being able to not only influence kids, but also influence coaches. That's a role I don't take lightly."

With this change in position also comes another very busy schedule. However, this life of long hours helping young students find what they are passionate about isn't seen as "work" for Bauer.

"I don't view it as a job, I don't view myself as busy. I really enjoy this," said the former coach.

"I use the word 'fun' a lot. I am having fun and I enjoy the new experiences. I was probably ready for some new experiences and to interact with some different people...I really value that. I took Ogallala football very personal, and now I'm taking Alliance activities very personal."

Bauer talked a lot about how important an Activities Director is to forming the culture and community of a school. He said this was one of his favorite aspects of the position. An initiative he is working on pushing at AHS is the concept of "impact players."

"You know you got to have hashtags nowadays," said Bauer.

"One of our hashtags we use in all of our social media is the term 'impact player.' We're looking to recognize kids that are making positive impacts in their programs, in our school and in our community."

This focus on the community in Alliance was a consistent point Bauer focused on. One example of this was his high praise for all the different coaches and leaders of each of the programs. But even with this confidence in their respective abilities, he said taking a more "hands-off" approach will be difficult.

"The biggest hurdle for me is going to be step back and let our coaches take whatever tools that I'm sharing with them - use (those tools) at their own customization and make it work for them," said Bauer.

"Being able to sit back and watch coaches do what they're passionate about is exciting for me. But being able to sit back and not let that enthusiasm that I have not just come pouring out of me has been kind of tough."

When thinking about his first month leading up to fall sports, Bauer said that this time is crucial for being able to have a successful season.

"You can't win a state championship in your summer, but you sure as heck can lose it," he said.

"I feel like our coaches have done everything they can to stay on pace toward having a successful season, based on whatever their definition of success is."

It can be tough to find free time in such a busy schedule. Whether it was as a coach, or now as the Activities Director for Alliance High School, Bauer said he can't get to the beach enough.

"I don't know if I miss anything in Ogallala more than Lake McConaughy - still plan to get there though," he said.

Other free time out of the office is spent reading or spending time with his family, which was a significant reason for making the career change.

As Bauer wrapped up the conversation, his mind once again went to thinking about the people of Alliance, and the importance of attending these student activities.

"We hope the community buys in as well," said Bauer.

"We're excited to see them at our activities, and looking forward to meeting as many people as we can...I think the community will like what they see with what the product of Alliance Bulldogs activities is going to be."

With golf, tennis, cross country, football and many other activities just around the corner, Bauer is set to take an important step in his journey from coach to activities director. He'll look to translate those leadership qualities he showed on the sidelines into this new role with AHS.

Nebraska Fall Turkey Permits Available Beginning August 11

CHADRON – Following a national search, Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht has been named the Dean of the School of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences as announced by Chadron State College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Paddock-O’Reilly.

Helmbrecht, who has been serving in the role since June 30, is no stranger to CSC. She was a 10-year member of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation faculty, before serving as interim dean last academic year.

“I am truly honored to continue as the Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences at Chadron State College. This college means a great deal to me, and I’m looking forward to working alongside dedicated students, faculty and staff. Together, we can do great things,” said Helmbrecht.

In a school that includes diverse disciplines, Helmbrecht said she plans to support faculty, staff and students by listening and being available.

“There are a variety of needs that must be met and it's hard to identify what those are from within my own office," said Helmbrech.

"I intend to get out of my office as much as I can and meet people in their spaces. I want to engage meaningfully with students and faculty, and continue to be active on campus. Supporting students and seeing them achieve their goals is what motivated me to continue this path in higher education, and I never want to lose that."

Helmbrecht said her immediate priorities are to continue building a vision for the school, aligning initiatives with the college’s and system office’s strategic plans, focusing on curriculum review and alignment, encouraging the inclusion of innovative teaching strategies, and providing time and support for programs facing re-accreditation visits in 2025-26.

She said she is excited to continue reviewing processes for increased efficiency and building relationships with external partners.

“I believe there are many opportunities for students within our region to take their learning and extracurricular experiences to the next level,” said Helmbrecht.

After earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Central Michigan University, Helmbrecht went on to obtain a master’s in physical education from the University of Nebraska Kearney, and a doctorate in health education from A.T. Still University. She finds her background in health education and wellness helps her lead with a humanistic approach.

“This is work and we have lives outside of CSC. I want all employees to honor that balance so when they show up to campus, they can be present and stay focused, and when they leave work, they can maintain time for themselves and/or their families. If we don't take care of ourselves outside of work, we can't achieve our goals while we're at work,” she said.

While at CSC, Helmbrecht has helped many achieve their goals by serving as an advocate for students, wellness, and mental health. She became the institution’s first female Faculty Athletic Representative in 2021 and was named CSC’s Campus Wellness Officer in early 2023 after successfully authoring an application for a $100,000 wellness grant from the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska. She said the grant was intended to help students and assist with the workload of CSC’s counselors. A separate grant from Healthy Blue allowed Helmbrecht to initiate a bike-sharing program on campus that will begin its fourth year this fall.

In the community, Helmbrecht, who graduated from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Emerging Leaders Program in 2022, is the president of the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association, a group involved in maintaining trails for hiking and non-motorized vehicles. She is the former secretary of Bike Walk Nebraska, a member of the American College of Health Association, and a certified group fitness instructor by the American Council on Exercise. Additionally, she and other instructors provide free yoga sessions on campus during the academic year.

 </figure>CHADRON – Following a national search, Dr. Brittany Helmbrecht has been named the Dean of the School of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences as announced by Chadron State College’s Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Paddock-O’Reilly.Helmbrecht, who has been serving in the role since June 30, is no stranger to CSC. She was a 10-year member of the Health, Physical Education and Recreation faculty, before serving as interim dean last academic year.“I am truly honored to continue as the Dean of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences at Chadron State College. This college means a great deal to me, and I’m looking forward to working alongside dedicated students, faculty and staff. Together, we can do great things,” said Helmbrecht.In a school that includes diverse disciplines, Helmbrecht said she plans to support faculty, staff and students by listening and being available.“There are a variety of needs that must be met and it's hard to identify what those are from within my own office," said Helmbrech."I intend to get out of my office as much as I can and meet people in their spaces. I want to engage meaningfully with students and faculty, and continue to be active on campus. Supporting students and seeing them achieve their goals is what motivated me to continue this path in higher education, and I never want to lose that."Helmbrecht said her immediate priorities are to continue building a vision for the school, aligning initiatives with the college’s and system office’s strategic plans, focusing on curriculum review and alignment, encouraging the inclusion of innovative teaching strategies, and providing time and support for programs facing re-accreditation visits in 2025-26.She said she is excited to continue reviewing processes for increased efficiency and building relationships with external partners.“I believe there are many opportunities for students within our region to take their learning and extracurricular experiences to the next level,” said Helmbrecht.After earning a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Central Michigan University, Helmbrecht went on to obtain a master’s in physical education from the University of Nebraska Kearney, and a doctorate in health education from A.T. Still University. She finds her background in health education and wellness helps her lead with a humanistic approach.“This is work and we have lives outside of CSC. I want all employees to honor that balance so when they show up to campus, they can be present and stay focused, and when they leave work, they can maintain time for themselves and/or their families. If we don't take care of ourselves outside of work, we can't achieve our goals while we're at work,” she said.While at CSC, Helmbrecht has helped many achieve their goals by serving as an advocate for students, wellness, and mental health. She became the institution’s first female Faculty Athletic Representative in 2021 and was named CSC’s Campus Wellness Officer in early 2023 after successfully authoring an application for a $100,000 wellness grant from the Behavioral Health Education Center of Nebraska. She said the grant was intended to help students and assist with the workload of CSC’s counselors. A separate grant from Healthy Blue allowed Helmbrecht to initiate a bike-sharing program on campus that will begin its fourth year this fall.In the community, Helmbrecht, who graduated from the American Association of State Colleges and Universities’ Emerging Leaders Program in 2022, is the president of the Northwest Nebraska Trails Association, a group involved in maintaining trails for hiking and non-motorized vehicles. She is the former secretary of Bike Walk Nebraska, a member of the American College of Health Association, and a certified group fitness instructor by the American Council on Exercise. Additionally, she and other instructors provide free yoga sessions on campus during the academic year.

Helmbrecht named Dean of School of Professional Studies and Applied Sciences

SCOTTSBLUFF, NE - Western Nebraska Community College's Health Information Technology program is excited to announce the Medical Coding Certificate program.

The certificate is designed to be completed in two semesters (23 credit hours) and prepare students to complete the Certified Coding Associate exam through the American Health Information Management Association. All credits earned toward the certificate can also be applied toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in HIT.

WNCC's HIT program is proud to be one of just two Medical Coding Certificate programs in the state of Nebraska. Additionally, both the certificate and the associate's degree in HIT are offered entirely online and fully asynchronous, allowing students to complete either program from anywhere and at their own pace.

"This flexibility is ideal for working professionals, as many of our students balance full-time jobs while completing coursework," Nicole Danielzuk, HIT program director said.

In recognition of its commitment to innovation and excellence, WNCC’s HIT program has also been selected as a Future Education Model demonstration site by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Health Information Management (CAHIIM).

﻿As an early adopter of the 2026 CAHIIM accreditation standards, WNCC is implementing an innovative, competency-based curriculum designed to prepare students for the rapidly evolving health information industry and emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence.

"We are excited to play a leading role in implementing the Future Education Model initiative by CAHIIM," Danielzuk said. "We are confident that this new era of competency-based education will fully prepare students to meet current industry standards while embracing emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence. WNCC HIT Program Now Offering Medical Coding Certificate

The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) has announced funds are now available to private non-profit organizations and governmental entities for transportation needs of seniors and individuals with disabilities for whom mass transportation services are unavailable, insufficient or inappropriate. Eligible applicants include private non-profit organizations incorporated within Nebraska and governmental entities. Governmental entities must certify that there are no non-profit agencies in the service area readily able to provide the service. Applications will only be accepted for rural and small urban areas, and Lincoln. Applicants in the Omaha area should contact MAPA for information about applications.

The Federal Transit Administration’s Section 5310 program is a Federal Grant program managed by NDOT. The purpose of the program is to enhance the mobility of seniors and individuals with disabilities. Applications are restricted to the acquisition of transportation vehicles.

Applications are due by October 31, 2025.

NDOT Announces Funding Availability for Transportation Needs

At around 12:30 a.m. on July 26, Officer Orsborn and K-9 Sukey were patrolling and observed a minivan travelling westbound on Highway 20, without headlights or taillights on. Orsborn conducted a traffic stop on the minivan and during his contact with the driver, Officer Orsborn detected the odor of marijuana coming from within the vehicle.

Officer Orsborn deployed K-9 Sukey and a search of the motor vehicle was conducted locating several items of drug paraphernalia, along with approximately 1 gram of suspected methamphetamine and residue amounts of marijuana.

As a result of the traffic stop/investigation, the driver of the minivan, 25-year-old Kasandra Thunder Hawk was placed under arrest and transported to the Dawes County Jail for Possession of Methamphetamine and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

NCSA announces Distinguished Service, Friend of Education Awards at state administrator conference

The Nebraska Council of School Administrators held Administrators’ Days last week at the Younes Conference Center North in Kearney, where the organization announced its annual award honorees in front of more than 1,100 school leaders.

The NCSA Distinguished Service Award is given annually to an individual or individuals who have demonstrated exceptional, distinguished leadership in public education. The 2024 recipients are Josie Floyd and Stuart Simpson.

Floyd currently serves as principal at Dudley Elementary in Gothenburg and has long been active at the state level, serving as Vice Chair of the NCSA Executive Board from 2023-2024. Simpson recently retired from North Platte Public Schools after serving 18 years as the district’s finance director.

“Josie Floyd and Stuart Simpson both reflect what this award was established to honor and celebrate, and are two well-deserving recipients who we were proud to honor,” said NCSA executive director Dr. Mike Dulaney. “They are each respected leaders in Nebraska’s educational landscape and have been invaluable assets to public education. They’ve each made an enormous impact on the profession, and our organization, while always keeping students their top priority.”

During Thursday’s awards luncheon, Nebraska State Education Association (NSEA) executive director Trish Guinan was honored with the NCSA Friend of Education Award, which is given annually to a non-member(s) who has demonstrated exceptional, distinguished leadership in public education. Guinan is set to retire in December after dedicating her long career to public education in Nebraska.

“Trish has given 50 years of service to public education, first as a teacher and then as a fixture at NSEA for nearly 30 years,” said Dr. Dulany. “Her leadership the last five years has been commendable, and the positive impact she’s made will be felt for many years to come.”

On Friday, NCSA presented Stand for Schools, the team behind the Public School Proud Nebraska campaign, with the Friend of Education Award. Senator Dunixi Guereca and Stand for Schools deputy executive director Daniel Russell were on center stage to accept the award.

“Stand for Schools has been a fierce supporter of public education in Nebraska, and school districts across our state are fortunate to have them in their corner,” Dulaney said. “The campaign they launched last year has made a statewide impact, and we’re proud of the partnership our organizations share.” 

Also at the conference, Dr. John Schwartz, superintendent of Millard Public Schools, was announced the 2025-26 Nebraska Superintendent of the Year by the Nebraska Association of School Administrators (NASA). Dr. Schwartz will receive his award at the State Education Conference in November.

The annual event included keynote presentations by nationally-renowned speakers Erin King and Thomas C. Murray, and was attended by members of the State Board of Education, Commissioner of Education Dr. Brian Maher, and staff from the Nebraska Department of Education, who held their programming on Wednesday.

At around 2 a.m on July 28, 2025, officers were dispatched to Kitty Court in response to a complaint of a disturbance.  Officers were also notified of an assault victim at RWMC. 

 The 39-year-old male suffered severe head injuries.  During the course of the investigation, Bernard Little Spotted Horse, 44 of Terrytown, was arrested on a charge of 1st Degree Assault, two charges of 2nd Degree Assault and one charge of Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony.  He was housed at Scotts Bluff County Detention Center.

Terrytown Man Arrested in Kitty Court on Multiple Assault Charges

Shortly before midnight on July 25, 2025, officers were dispatched to the 700 block of 14th&nbsp;Avenue in response to a report of a male who was stabbed.

Before officers arrived, the 38-year-old male was transported to RWMC by a citizen.&nbsp; Officers contacted the male at the hospital, and discovered that he had stab wounds to his torso.&nbsp; After medical intervention, he is now in stable condition.&nbsp; No arrests have been made at this time.

SPD is requesting that anyone with information about the stabbing contact Scottsbluff Police Department as soon as possible.&nbsp;

At approximately 1:30 p.m. on July 26, 2025, officers were dispatched to the McDonald’s Restaurant entrance for a reported motor vehicle accident involving a van and motorcycle. The motorcycle driver was reported injured. Officers arrived and met with both drivers. Jerry Hall Jr, 60 of Scottsbluff, was the driver of the van. Kevin McCathern Jr, 38 of Scottsbluff, was the driver of the motorcycle.

Hall was eastbound on W. 27th St. Hall and entered the middle turn lane. Hall turned north into the McDonald’s Restaurant parking lot. McCathern was westbound on W. 27th St. in the right-hand lane. The front of the motorcycle collided with the passenger’s side of the van. EMS/Fire arrived and assisted SPD officers. McCathern was transported to RWMC for non-life-threatening injuries. Charges are pending until surveillance footage is reviewed.

On July 18, 2025, shortly after 9:00 a.m., the communications center received a report of an injury accident on County Road 25 just north of Lake Minatare Road.

Investigation revealed that a 24-year-old rural Scottsbluff man engaged in farming operations was northbound on County Road 25 driving a 4-wheeled utility vehicle, when a large dog ran into his path and collided with the vehicle.&nbsp; The driver attempted to swerve to avoid the accident, but the dog hit the vehicle, and it rolled at least once.&nbsp; The driver suffered head and facial injuries considered non-life threatening. &nbsp;Regional West Ambulance transported him to&nbsp; the hospital.

No violations of the law contributed to this accident and no citations were issued.

The Scottsbluff Rural Volunteer Fire Department also assisted at the scene.

Our traditional “black and whites” will be phased out as the vehicles end their service life. Within the next week, the citizens of Scottsbluff will see these new vehicles on patrol.

New Look Coming to Patrol Cars in Scottsbluff

ALLIANCE, NE - The final stop on the busy summer tour around Nebraska&nbsp; for University of Nebraska System President, Jeff Gold, saw Alliance community members voice their thoughts on higher education and the future of Nebraska as a whole, at 8 a.m. on July 25, 2025 at the West Side Event Center in Alliance, NE.

Gold started the conversation off by reminiscing on the past of higher education, and explained how a lot has changed even in the past few years. Gold said he has seen an increase in the notion of whether or not higher education is worth spending 4+ years in school, as opposed to working right out of high school.

What started as a one-sided conversation quickly grew into a civilized back-and-forth between members of the Alliance community and Gold. One of the biggest concerns that was raised was how many students were going to school within the Nebraska system, and deciding to then leave the state for work. Gold's response didn't dance around the question.

"Bluntly, we're failing," said Gold when asked about the ability to keep graduates in state.

The 12-year Nebraska leader said approximately 4,500 people are leaving the state post-grad, which is a large reason why this issue is high on the list of concerns within the University of Nebraska System.

Gold also answered questions about small town life. A concern talked about was getting top-tier medical care. As a heart surgeon himself, Gold showed strong feelings of empathy for this specific concern. He talked about one of the issues they are working on is finding appropriate housing for health care workers when on rotations in rural Nebraska.

The NU System president was asked about the SNAP-Ed funding being cut and what the future looked like for workers and students alike who are affected by the loss of this funding.

"We're doing everything we can to absorb those people into other openings that we may have, but not to mince words, people are going to lose their jobs," said Gold.

"It's really so sad because these people work really hard. Many of them are students who are employed doing this. And having a nutritional support program, particularly for young families in rural communities, is a really important thing to do. I can only hope that some of that responsibility will be absorbed by the local communities."

Gold wrapped up the statewide tour he had been on since early July in Alliance, NE this morning by thanking everyone for coming, and offering to help in any way he could. As the fall semester draws near, the concerns from communities in western Nebraska continue to be considered as students return to school in August.

 </figure>ALLIANCE, NE - The final stop on the busy summer tour around Nebraska&nbsp; for University of Nebraska System President, Jeff Gold, saw Alliance community members voice their thoughts on higher education and the future of Nebraska as a whole, at 8 a.m. on July 25, 2025 at the West Side Event Center in Alliance, NE.Gold started the conversation off by reminiscing on the past of higher education, and explained how a lot has changed even in the past few years. Gold said he has seen an increase in the notion of whether or not higher education is worth spending 4+ years in school, as opposed to working right out of high school.What started as a one-sided conversation quickly grew into a civilized back-and-forth between members of the Alliance community and Gold.
