Chadron – Chadron State College remains a key driver of economic prosperity in Nebraska, contributing to individual student success as well as the vitality and sustainability of rural communities and the state according to a recent economic impact study by Lightcast for the Nebraska State College System (NSCS).

“These findings underscore the vital contributions Chadron, Peru, and Wayne State Colleges make,” said Dr. Paul Turman, Chancellor of the NSCS. “Behind every statistic are real people—students, alumni, and workers—who are helping Nebraska thrive.”

Chadron State College generated a total economic impact of $456.3 million during the 2022-23 fiscal year. CSC’s contributions support 6,227 jobs statewide, bolster businesses, and equip students with skills to enter high-demand and high-paying careers, according to Lightcast. The study highlights the influence the college has on the state’s economy through its operations, student spending, construction, and alumni contributions.

CSC added $34 million to Nebraska’s economy through payroll, local spending, and business activities. Out-of-state and in-state students, through groceries, transportation, and other household expenses, added $3.1 million in income while supporting 48 jobs. Spending on construction&nbsp;projects generated $977,900 in income, supporting 12 jobs. Thousands of alumni contributed $418.3 million to the economy by meeting workforce needs and productivity.

The report indicates that CSC delivers significant returns on investment for students, taxpayers, and society. For every dollar students invest in their education, they can expect $5.20 in higher future earnings. Taxpayers see a $2.30 return for each public dollar invested, and society benefits eightfold, with $551.7 million in total social benefits, including increased income, business output, and public savings.

Report includes details about CSC’s economic impact

SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested one person after a multi-county pursuit in the Nebraska Panhandle.

At approximately 11:10 p.m. MT, NSP received information about a stolen vehicle that was believed to be traveling eastbound on Highway 92, just east of Gering. A trooper located the vehicle, a Chevrolet Impala, and observed it to be speeding. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the driver refused to yield and accelerated to over 110 miles per hour. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The pursuit continued eastbound on Highway 92 for approximately 20 minutes with the suspect driving in the wrong lane of traffic several times. As the suspect vehicle approached Bridgeport, it slowed its speed. Another trooper was able to successfully deploy stop sticks to further slow the vehicle. As the vehicle traveled through Bridgeport, the driver struck a parked vehicle and several mailboxes and came to a stop near the intersection of 5th&nbsp;Street and P Street.

The driver was then taken into custody without further incident. The driver, Jeremie Steen, 32, of Scottsbluff, was arrested for theft by unlawful taking $5,000+, flight to avoid arrest, willful reckless driving, criminal mischief $5,000+, no operator’s license, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana – less than one ounce, and numerous traffic violations. He was lodged in Scotts Bluff County Jail.

Troopers Arrest Scottsbluff Man After Pursuit with Stolen Vehicle

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. -﻿&nbsp;Western Nebraska Community College received a $15,000 donation from the Nebraska Public Power District.

The funds were raised from the 33rd annual Wells Fargo Nebraska Open golf tournament in September. WNCC's share of $15,000 will be distributed evenly across the Alliance, Scottsbluff, and Sidney campuses.&nbsp;

NPPD has raised more than $2 million for the Nebraska Community College Foundation since the tournament's inception in 1992, all donated to Nebraska community colleges. The tournament has now raised more than $400,000 for WNCC alone. The three-day tournament includes an 18-hole, Pro-Am scramble tournament, and a 54-hole professional tournament.&nbsp;

"On behalf of WNCC, I would like to thank NPPD for its continued support of the community college&nbsp;system and WNCC in particular," WNCC President Greg Dart said. "The annual&nbsp;gifts have had a positive impact on the success of our students and businesses in our service area as our graduates enter the workforce."

Last night, Jan. 22, the Scottsbluff Police Department obtained two arrest warrants for suspects in the murder of Wyatt Reeb (15). Both male suspects were located at a Scottsbluff home in the 1500 block of Cowen Drive. The suspects were taken into custody without incident. 

The two suspects arrested are; Devante D.A. Castellaw (17) and Corey T. Rotherham Jr. (16) both of Scottsbluff. Both suspects were charged with Murder in the Second Degree (Class IB Felony) and Use of a Deadly Weapon to Commit a Felony (Class II Felony)  The Scottsbluff Police Department is continuing its investigation into this case and will provide updates when available.

2 suspects arrested in Scottsbluff murder 



Lincoln, Neb. — Nebraska LEAD Program Class 42 recently returned from an impactful International Study/Travel Seminar to Romania, Hungary and Poland, held from January 3-17, 2025. The two-week journey provided 28 fellows with an immersive opportunity to explore the historical, cultural, religious and agricultural dimensions of these Eastern European nations.

“The International Study/Travel Seminar is a cornerstone of the Nebraska LEAD Program, offering Fellows an invaluable global perspective that enhances their leadership skills and understanding of agriculture in a global context,” said Kurtis Harms, Nebraska LEAD Program director. “This year’s visit to Romania, Hungary and Poland provided meaningful experiences and connections that will undoubtedly shape our Fellows as future leaders.”

The seminar featured a diverse itinerary, including visits to farms, businesses and historical sites. Highlights of the trip included:

“Visiting these countries opened my eyes to the shared challenges and opportunities we face in agriculture,” said LEAD 42 Fellow Jake Werner, a senior merchandiser with ADM. “Seeing how farms in Romania and Poland operate and hearing their stories inspired me to think differently about how we approach our agricultural systems back home. The visit also helped me appreciate the local and international markets we have in the United States.”

Fellow Michelle Bose, a farmer and closing agent with Dvoracek Title, added, “Walking through Auschwitz-Birkenau and Schindler’s Factory was an emotional experience that deepened my appreciation for the resilience of humanity and the importance of leadership grounded in empathy and understanding.”

The Nebraska LEAD Program continues to prepare agricultural leaders for tomorrow through its comprehensive leadership development curriculum. The International Study/Travel Seminar serves as a capstone experience, equipping participants with global perspectives that enrich Nebraska’s agricultural and rural communities.

“One of the most important factors in becoming a good leader is being able to get outside of your bubble or your comfort zone and experience life through the eyes others,” said Director Harms. “This enhanced understanding of people and cultures around the world hopefully lead to better decision-making and greater relationships with others.”

Scottsbluff police conducting homicide investigation on teen 

In Box Butte County District Court Wednesday, Judge Travis P. O'Gorman issued sentencing in the case of Nebraska vs. Jacob Zier, 34, of Alliance.&nbsp; Zier, who attended the sentencing via video conference, burglarized the Alliance Mission Store on September 13, 2024.

Judge O'Gorman sentenced Zier on one count of attempted burglary, a Class 3-A felony, to 364 days in the Box Butte County Jail, minus 142 days previously served.

Following his release, Zier will be subject to nine months of post-release supervision.

CHADRON – The Chadron State College Music department has announced the dates of spring performances. All concerts and recitals are open to the public and free of charge.

Kicking off the semester’s events, the CSC Jazz Band will perform Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom as part of Martin Luther King Jr. Week.

Next, the High Plains Band and Choir Festival will take place on Feb. 3 at 5 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium, bringing together talented musicians from the region.

Later in February, the Music Faculty Showcase will highlight the talents of CSC’s faculty members on Feb. 16, from 3 to 5 p.m., in the Mari Sandoz High Plains Heritage Center’s Chicoine Atrium.

The Honors Recital follows on March 2, from 3 to 5 p.m., also in the Sandoz Center Atrium.

March 25, a collaborative concert will take place featuring Chadron Public Schools, the Chadron State Wind Symphony, and the CSC Community Symphonic Band from 7 to 9 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium.

On March 27, CSC will host its College Musician for a Day event, an immersive experience for aspiring musicians. It runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium. The CSC Percussion Ensemble will perform March 29, from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium, showcasing dynamic rhythms and techniques.

April performances begin with the Chadron State Wind Symphony and Community Band concert scheduled for April 4, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Memorial Hall’s Auditorium.

The CSC Concert Choir and Community Choir will present a concert April 6, from 3 to 4 p.m. at the Chadron Arts Center, offering a blend of vocal performances.

On April 12, the New Music concert will feature original compositions by members of the community. The event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

The CSC Jazz Band will return for another performance April 14, from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Memorial Hall Auditorium. This will be followed by a Vocal Jazz concert on April 15, from 7 to 8 p.m., also in the Memorial Hall Auditorium.

The spring semester will conclude with the CSC Guitar Ensemble’s performances on May 2 from 7 to 9 p.m. in the COIL Planetarium.

Several years ago I was sitting at church fellowship with a friend who was about 25 years older than I was. I'll call her Alice for this article. Alice pulled an envelope of cash out of her purse to buy something from a child in our church. I was surprised she carried that much cash, and she was surprised that I didn’t.

A stay-at-home mom and housewife, Alice was given a certain amount of money every month from her husband. She had an envelope for groceries and an envelope for other expenses. It was her responsibility to budget her funds, manage that cash to last until the end of the month. She didn’t have access to savings or checking accounts.

I saw this as a generational difference. Her generation was one-income families with the man controlling financial matters. Mine was the first generation where most women expected to have careers. Before the 1970s women could not have bank accounts or any kind of credit without a man co-signing. Therefore Alice bought everything with cash.

What Alice did decades ago is now a financial strategy that is followed by many people in their 20s. It’s called cash stuffing, and it is a trend found on social media. People pay bills and buy things with cash, then post videos on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube.

I subscribe to Marketplace from American Public Media, and they recently reported on cash stuffing. The article talked about a YouTube channel called LilyBudgets, which has had over a million views.

Like most people, Lily’s paycheck is direct deposited. She goes to the bank and draws most of it out in cash, in the specific denominations she needs for each bill. The cash is then sorted into a pink envelope with dividers: housing, gas, groceries, fun. Some of the cash is returned to the bank to deposit in a Roth IRA and a savings account.

There is a risk, however. If cash is lost or stolen, there isn't any good recourse. You're just out the money you had set aside to pay those bills. For many, that is financially devastating. Our money is so much safer in a bank!

Lily loves handling the money, counting the bills as she pays for everything. She thinks the tangible nature of money helps her save. And multiple studies show that she is right.

The Marketplace article talked about the endowment effect. When you hold onto something, you cherish it more. You see your hard-earned money, what you labored for hours to earn, being given to someone else. You’re less likely to let it go, so you spend less.

Compare that to the alternative used by most people Lily’s age, or mine, for that matter. Tap your phone. Use a cash app. If you’re a Luddite, you might even get out a credit or debit card. Those are all payments that put a wall between us and our money, so we don’t really pay attention to how much we are spending. And when we are not paying attention, we spend more.

Who uses cash stuffing? People who have trouble managing their money. People who have racked up too much credit card debt. People who haven’t been able to successfully manage checking accounts. Even young people who like the aesthetics of cash and want to post about it.

Do they realize they are following the example of Great-Grandma? Hey, it worked for her!

Getting Ahead: Cash stuffing 

The 2025 mountain lion hunting season in Nebraska ended Jan. 19 after the final harvest limit was reached in the Pine Ridge Unit.

One male and six females were harvested in the Pine Ridge Unit. Regulations require the unit close once the annual harvest limit of 12 mountain lions — or sublimit of six females — is reached.

The Wildcat Hills and Niobrara units met their harvest limits Jan. 2 and 5 respectively.

Fresh snow for good tracking conditions in many areas, effective hunting techniques, and excellent hunter access due to relatively thin linear habitats in the Niobrara and Wildcat Hills units, contributed to relatively short seasons.

In total, 13 mountain lions were harvested during the 2025 season — those in the Pine Ridge Unit, one male and two females in the Niobrara Unit, and two males and one female in the Wildcat Hills Unit.

This was the state’s eighth mountain lion harvest season; the first was in 2014.

Opportunities to harvest mountain lions were expanded for 2025 due to an increased population estimate in the Pine Ridge and increased numbers documented in the Niobrara and Wildcat Hills areas. Harvest limits and permits increased in the Pine Ridge and Niobrara Units, the Niobrara Unit area was increased, and the Wildcat Hills Unit was added to the mountain lion hunting season for the first time.

The limits for Nebraska’s three mountain lion hunting units are set to meet the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s objective to maintain resilient, healthy and socially acceptable mountain lion populations that are in balance with available habitat and other wildlife species over the long term.

Mountain lions are native to Nebraska but were extirpated from the state in the early 1900s. They moved back into the state from South Dakota, Wyoming and Colorado as populations of prey species increased. Mountain lion presence in Nebraska was confirmed in the early 1990s, and in 1995 the state legislature classified them as game animals.

Since then, the cats have established reproducing populations in Nebraska’s most rugged terrain: the Pine Ridge, Wildcat Hills and Niobrara Valley with occasional confirmed presence in other parts of the state.

Alliance Nutrition Site to host Valentine’s Dinner

SCOTTSBLUFF, NEB.)&nbsp;&nbsp;— Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol, with assistance from the Scottsbluff Police Department and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office, apprehended two minors following a pursuit in Scottsbluff.

Monday evening, NSP was alerted that Scottsbluff PD officers were looking for a vehicle that had been reported stolen. At approximately 10:10 p.m. MT, a trooper attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, a Mercury Mariner. The driver accelerated and fled on residential streets in Scottsbluff. The trooper initiated a pursuit.

The vehicle continued to flee on residential streets, running through multiple stop signs. At the intersection of 14th&nbsp;Street and 4th&nbsp;Avenue, the vehicle failed to make a turn and struck a tree. Two occupants fled on foot, while a third occupant remained at the scene and was taken into custody without incident. The driver of the vehicle was located a short time later and take into custody by the Scottsbluff Police Department.

Scottsbluff Police Department is actively investigating a serious assault that occurred on 1-20-25 at approximately 10:25 pm.&nbsp; 

The assault is believed to have occurred in the area of 5th&nbsp;Avenue and East Overland and left a 15-year-old juvenile with a life threatening, penetrating wound to the chest. &nbsp;Anyone with security camera footage in that area is encouraged to contact the Scottsbluff Police Department.&nbsp; The name of the victim will not be released at this time.

Additionally, the Scottsbluff Police Department is aware of a vehicle pursuit led by the Nebraska State Patrol that occurred around this same time, and in this same area as the assault. The Department is investigating the possibility that the two incidents are related.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Lastly, Scottsbluff Police Department is aware of a video circulating on Facebook showing a foot pursuit around the time of this incident.&nbsp; The suspect involved in the foot pursuit is not the same person as the victim from the assault, and sustained minor injuries during his apprehension.&nbsp; The suspect in the foot pursuit was a juvenile, and was transported to RWMC for medical treatment and released to the Nebraska State Patrol for admittance to a juvenile detention facility on pending charges related to the vehicle pursuit.&nbsp;

The University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing Northern Division in Norfolk and West Nebraska Division in Scottsbluff have been approved as instructional sites by the Student Exchange Visitor Program to accept international students into the Bachelor of Science in Nursing programs, beginning with the fall 2025 semester.

Previously, those students would have to get an associate degree before pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing. They now can satisfy their prerequisites and consider the UNMC College of Nursing divisions in Norfolk and Scottsbluff for their bachelor’s degree without having to complete the associate degree in nursing first.

Haley Hays, DNP, interim assistant dean of the West Nebraska Division, said this will benefit both divisions because many international students already are on the campuses of Western Nebraska Community College in Scottsbluff and Northeast Community College in Norfolk. Hays said in her tenure, the UNMC College of Nursing has had to turn away several international students, all of whom attended Western Nebraska Community College and wanted to remain in Scottsbluff.

“This initiative not only diversifies our student body but also strengthens the pipeline of highly skilled, culturally competent nurses in rural Nebraska,” she said. “By expanding opportunities for international students, we are fostering a richer educational environment and helping to address the critical need for health care professionals in our communities.”

Maegen Graham, student services coordinator at the West Nebraska Division, added that it will help bolster health care in the area, especially for international populations.

“It is important to be able to serve the international community in the rural areas and the Panhandle of Scottsbluff,” she said.

Lepaine Sharp-McHenry, DNP, dean of the UNMC College of Nursing, said the ability to bring international students into the programs at Norfolk and Scottsbluff will be an asset to their respective communities.

“We are excited to have achieved this milestone and now be able to accept international students into our BSN program at the Northern and West Nebraska Divisions,” she said.&nbsp;“This is an opportunity to bolster the nursing&nbsp;workforce by retaining these students in our rural communities.”

Jane Meza, PhD, UNMC interim chancellor for academic affairs, said the interactions between students at UNMC campuses lead to a robust, collaborative environment. Students learn from one another and can take those lessons into their careers. Agreements to accept international students already are in place at Omaha, Lincoln and Kearney.

“We like to have international students at UNMC because it leads to a richer educational opportunity for all students,” she said. “It helps us to work and to learn with people from other countries and other cultures.”

Angela Johnson, EdD, assistant dean of the Northern Division, echoed Meza’s comments, stating that international students will encourage cross-cultural learning and collaboration in the classroom, which will prepare all students for life after school.

“Their presence enriches classroom discussions, fosters a broader understanding of healthcare practices, and contributes to the cultural competence of our future nursing professionals,” she said. “By welcoming international students, we strengthen our commitment to being a welcoming university that reflects the world we aim to serve.”

Scottsbluff, Norfolk nursing divisions to accept international students

Chadron- 10 young ladies from across the state gathered on Saturday night to compete in the Miss Chadron pageant in Chadron. Walking away with the title of Miss Chadron 2025 was Sophie Kruse, daughter of Ron and Suzie Kruse of Longmont. Kruse was also won the Miss Community Service competition.

Desteny Miller, daughter of Brandon and Cherry Wulf of Arapahoe, was voted Miss Congeniality.

Jessica Schmidt, daughter of Dale and Jolene Schmidt of Rapid City, was voted Miss audience choice.

Your 2025 Teens are: Miss Chadron’s Teen 2025, Paige Dodson, daughter of Wendy Dodson of North Platte. Dodson was also voted the Teen Miss Congeniality. Miss Northwest’s Teen 2025, Kaitlyn Shannon, daughter of Stephanie Shannon and Matthew Shannon of Alliance.

Allisen Meek, daughter of Jennifer and Brett Cullan and David Meek of Hemingford won the Teen Community Service competition.

Grace Freesman, daughter of John and Krystal Freesman of Gordon, was voted Teen audience choice.

Along with representing their titles for the year, the 2025 titleholders will now advance to the Miss Nebraska and Miss Nebraska’s Teen competitions held in North Platte in June of 2025.&nbsp;
