&nbsp;CHADRON, Neb. -- September 7, 2020 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College football team has scheduled five non-conference contests against fellow Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference members, as of Monday afternoon. The games will count as official NCAA contests, however no RMAC&nbsp;championship will be awarded nor standings kept. LINCOLN, Neb.-A Lincoln man who gave an impassioned speech at a Lincoln City Council meeting on changing the name of chicken wings, crashed a Scott Frost news conference on Friday.

Ander Christensen became an internet sensation after he suggested that Lincoln lead the way in changing the name of chicken wings to "saucy nugs" and various other names.

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) - In an age of growing divisive political discourse across the country, a Nebraska man is drawing attention for his impassioned plea to take action - against boneless chicken wings.

Video of Ander Christensen's satirical rant before the Lincoln City Council on Monday pleading to ban the "boneless chicken wing" moniker has garnered widespread attention on social media and news sites.

Christensen, who is the son of a council member, made his case that the meat in boneless wings doesn't come from a chicken's wing at all, but from its breast.

"We've been living a lie for far too long," he told the council.

Instead, he suggested the dish could be renamed, "buffalo-style chicken tenders, wet tenders, saucy nugs or trash."

His plea, of course, was for the children.

"Our children are afraid of having bones attached to their meat, which is where meat comes from. It grows on bones!" he said. "We need to teach them that the wings of a chicken are from a chicken, and it's delicious."

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference is utilizing pod scheduling to play a majority of the fall 2020 postponed season, and games will begin in late January 2021.

According to the conference, four-day windows between Thursday and Sunday will be available for matches with three teams playing at a pod host site.&nbsp; 

Chadron State had not published official game days or opponents on its athletics website as of this article Friday morning, and is likely still working out the exact days to play in conjunction with basketball season and potential pandemic-related changes that may be coming to those schedules.

Here's what the RMAC shows will be Chadron State's volleyball schedule for the "Spring" 2021 season:

Nuggets crushed in Game 1 of West semis, 120-97 Clippers

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Terence "Bud" Crawford is looking for a fight.

The undefeated WBO welterweight champion has never fought less than twice in a calendar year as a professional. He faces the possibility of being idle all of 2020.

Has Crawford, in the prime of his career at 32, gotten antsy?

"Actually, no," he said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I've been using this time for resting my body. I'm getting to spend more time with my kids and am just taking the good with the bad."

He continues to train every day. Shortly after coming through the door to his Omaha gym, a shouting Crawford asked manager-trainer Brian "BoMac" McIntyre for the day's plan and immediately changed into sweat clothes. Crawford has been helping WBO 130-pound champion Jamel Herring and unbeaten 168-pound contender Steven Nelson prepare for fights in Las Vegas this weekend.

"I get in here and work out with the fighters that have fight dates," Crawford said. "Normally, I'm running with them, doing strength and conditioning, sparring."

Crawford (36-0, 27 KOs) hasn't had a fight since&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/8d8eea79d24723a57fd50ef59101e6db" target="_blank">he stopped Egidijus Kavaliauskas in the ninth round&nbsp;</a>at Madison Square Garden on Dec. 14.

Regarded as one of the world's top pound-for-pound fighters and a winner of belts in three divisions, Crawford has long wanted a shot at eight-division champion and current WBA welterweight super title-holder Manny Pacquiao. Top Rank CEO Bob Arum has been unable to make that fight so far.

Negotiations are underway to get Crawford a November date with the Kell Brook (39-2, 27 KOs). Brook is a former IBF welterweight champ who now is the WBO No. 10 at 154 pounds. He would have to come down a weight class to face Crawford.

Meanwhile, Crawford is on the outside looking in as top welterweights handled by Top Rank's rival promoter, Premier Boxing Champions, have been able to fight during the coronavirus pandemic.

Shawn Porter won a unanimous decision against Sebastian Formella on Aug. 23 in a WBC/IBF world title eliminator. WBC/IBF champion Errol Spence Jr. has a Fox pay-per-view fight against Danny Garcia on Nov. 21.

Jamal James won a unanimous decision over Thomas Dulorme to get in line to face Pacquiao or the winner of Sunday's Yordenis Ugas-Abel Ramos bout.

Former unified welterweight champ Keith Thurman, also a PBC fighter and the No. 4 WBC contender, has called on Crawford to be his first opponent after a layoff of more than a year following his loss to Pacquiao.

"It all comes down to money," Crawford said of crossing over to face one of the PBC boxers. "If the money was put up, those fights would be made."

Purses have taken a hit because of the pandemic, with many venues not yet open to fans. Plus, Arum and PBC founder Al Haymon have had a cold relationship, though media outlets have reported the two are more willing to do business with each other since a federal anti-trust lawsuit brought by Arum was settled in the spring.

Crawford said he can afford to be patient, noting that his best money-making years are still ahead of him.

"I don't feel like I'm about to be 33," he said. "I never drank, never smoked. I took care of my body. Only thing a person can actually say about me is that I ate a lot of sweets. That's it. My body is very preserved."

As impressive as his record is, Crawford hasn't garnered the respect he believes he's due. Critics say his resume is missing a career-defining fight.

"The only reason they say that is because of how dominant I've been," he said.

Crawford rolled off a list of opponents he's beaten: Amir Khan, Viktor Postol, Yuriokis Gamboa, John Molina Jr., Ricky Burns, Raymundo Beltran.

"Ricky Burns, he became champion after (fighting) me. Beltran, he became champion after me. A lot of people discredit those types of fighters," Crawford said. "Then everybody gets their credit for beating those types of fighters. But me, being on the pedestal that I am, they look at me and say, 'Oh, well, those are just steppingstone fights.' "

Winning a unified championship at 147 would go a long way in accomplishing his long-held goal of going down as one of the sport's all-time greats. He already has been an undisputed light welterweight champion and the WBO lightweight title-holder.

"They'll give me my credit when I retire," Crawford said. "Muhammad Ali, a lot of people didn't like him. He was the villain. A lot of people didn't like Mike Tyson, they just knew he was going to knock somebody out. A lot of people say Mike Tyson didn't fight nobody. A lot of people don't like Floyd Mayweather, but they respect him because of how talented he is.

"So when I look at it, I'm never going to get the just due. Just continue to keep winning. That's it."

Unbeaten Terence Crawford hoping to fight before year ends

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The University of Nebraska at Omaha has quarantined four of its sports teams after some athletes tested positive for the coronavirus, even as data show the state approaching 400 COVID-19 deaths.

UNO shut down workouts and quarantined members this week of its men's basketball, women's softball, men's baseball and women's volleyball teams, the Omaha World-Herald&nbsp;<a href="https://omaha.com/news/local/education/four-uno-sports-teams-quarantined-after-athletes-test-positive-for-covid-19/article_1c566098-0623-5a01-9b2a-405072596df2.html#tracking-source=home-top-story-1" target="_blank">reported</a>. That came after the results of 13 UNO athletes who were tested on Friday came back positive for the virus.

News of UNO's outbreak comes as colleges around the country deal with rising case numbers as schools try to reconvene for the fall.

None of the UNO athletes who tested positive have shown any symptoms, UNO Chancellor Jeffrey Gold said Wednesday.

Each of the four teams had at least two athletes who tested positive, Gold said. Through Tuesday, 38 students and nine employees had tested positive at UNO. The University of Nebraska-Lincoln reported 245 positive results among students, faculty and staff through August.

The state's online tracker shows that as of Thursday, nearly 35,000 people have tested positive for the virus and 399 have died from it. The 7-day rolling average of daily new cases in Nebraska has risen over the past two weeks from 256.43 new cases per day on Aug. 19 to 318 new cases per day on Sept. 2.

DENVER (AP) — Garrett Hampson and Sam Hilliard homered and newcomer Kevin Pillar delivered a key triple as the Colorado Rockies bounced back from a battering, rallying to beat the San Francisco Giants 9-6 Wednesday.

A day after getting 27 hits in a 23-5 rout at Coors Field, and Alex Dickerson leading the way with three home runs and two doubles, the Giants again started fast. Mike Yastrzemski homered to help San Francisco score four times on six hits in the first inning.

By the fourth inning, the Giants already had six runs and 11 hits. But the Rockies bullpen pitched shutout ball the rest of the way — Dickerson finished with a double and single in five at-bats.

Hampson homered for the third time in two days. Pillar, acquired in a trade with Boston on Monday, hit a go-ahead, two-run triple in a five-run seventh inning.

Trevor Story added three hits for Colorado. Yastrzemski had three hits for the Giants.

One out into the game, Yastrzemski connected on a 3-2 pitch off Kyle Freeland for his eighth homer of the season. Dickerson, Joey Bart and Daniel Robertson followed with two-out RBI singles and one inning later, Freeland was out of the game. He allowed four runs on eight hits over two innings, his shortest outing of the season.

The Rockies trailed 6-4 going into the seventh. After Sam Coonrod (0-1) was relieved by Tyler Rogers, Pillar, who spent most of last season with the Giants, tripled for a 7-6 lead. Hilliard followed one out later with a two-run homer that landed in the left field bleachers.

DENVER (AP) — Alex Dickerson hit three home runs and matched a career high with six RBIs, highlighting one of the biggest offensive shows ever at Coors Field as the San Francisco Giants beat the Colorado Rockies 23-5 on Tuesday night.

“That’s by far the best game I’ve ever had in my life,” said Dickerson, who just missed hitting a fourth home run in his final at bat in the ninth, settling for a 414-foot double that reached the warning track in center, the deepest part of the field.

“I don’t think I’ve seen that many barreled balls from one guy in one game before,” said Brandon Crawford, who also homered among his three hits and had six RBIs. “I thought he got that last one, too. That would have been pretty cool.”

Dickerson finished with 16 total bases (three homers, two doubles), tying the Giants’ franchise record set by Willie Mays on April 30, 1961 at the Milwaukee Braves.

“It’s incredible company,” Dickerson said. “The things he did in his career and everything he means to San Francisco, to even be mentioned in the same breath as him is an incredible honor.”

Donovan Solano also had four hits and six RBIs. Brandon Belt and Joey Bart added three hits apiece as the Giants collected 27 hits overall and scored in every inning except the ninth in winning for the 10th time in 13 games.

“There were plenty of good performances to go around, up and down the lineup,” Giants manager Gabe Kapler said.

The 23 runs were the third-most allowed by the Rockies in team history. The Chicago Cubs scored 26 against Colorado on Aug. 18, 1995, and the Cincinnati Reds scored 24 on May 19, 1999. The 27 hits by the Giants were the second most ever allowed by the Rockies, matching the Cubs’ hit total in the 1995 game.

“We’ve got to circle the wagons a little bit here,” Rockies manager Bud Black said. “With the pitching, we’ve had a couple of rough nights on the mound, coincided with a couple of rough nights at the plate. It’s a bad combination. We’ve got to put the two together, that’s for sure.”

Giants starter Kevin Gausman (2-2) went five innings and allowed two hits and two runs, both on solo home runs by Garrett Hampson.

Catcher Drew Butera pitched the last two innings for the Rockies. It was the seventh career pitching appearance for the position player and the first since 2018 as a member of the Kansas City Royals.

Rock Bottom? Giants squash Rockies 23-5 on disasterous record-setting night

Chadron State has opened up the month of September with an eye on playing football games this fall.&nbsp; On a cool, breezy, fall-feeling late afternoon the team held its first official practice Monday in helmets on Elliott Field.

Wearing a protective mask Athletic Director Joel Smith sat on one of the hillside bleacher benches taking in the scene and finding a sense of normalcy within his department as the players and coaches went through drills.

I asked Smith if he expects Chadron State to play football games this fall, and he's very optimistic, albeit there are still a few hurdles to overcome before it's official.

Trying to plan for a season has been like aiming at a moving target with a blindfold on at times.

On the challenges of getting a season lined up Smith says, "Probably the wildest part of it is the fact that it changes so much.&nbsp; We might have a really good idea about what we're going to do in one week, and then three or four different things change, and then we have to go re-stack the chips again so that part's really been hard."

Smith says the department has built roughly 20 strategies and plans on how they would deal with situations that could arise, but it's been a challenge to rely on them because there have been so many changes surrounding the health situation, protocols and options in dealing with it all safely throughout the pandemic.

The Eagles are being vigilant in testing coaches and players for COVID-19.&nbsp; Smith outlines the details on the process of how the team is protecting itself to continue moving forward to a possible season.

Despite having some positive tests among student-athletes on campus since returning to school Smith is confident players want to compete and will take the necessary precautions to stay healthy and have a season.&nbsp; He feels CSC has "weathered it really well" so far.

CSC will practice again on Wednesday at Don Beebe Stadium.

📋 Madeline Wiese tossed a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts in a dominating performance to give Gering its sixth win of the fall, 6-0 over Alliance.&nbsp; Wiese threw 92 pitches in her seven inning gem, and did not walk a batter.&nbsp; Shaylee Messersmith was Alliance's only base runner Tuesday night, reaching on an error.&nbsp; Jada Schlothauer went 4/4 at the plate to lead Gering's 10-hit attack. Brylee Dean and Wiese doubled and tripled respectively.

📋 Scottsbluff took advantage of a struggling Chadron defense in Tuesday night's 17-4 win.&nbsp; The Cardinals committed eight errors leading to seven unearned runs.&nbsp; Avery Fox led the Bearcats with a four-RBI night at the plate and was one of four Bearcats with two hits.&nbsp; Chadron sophomore Josie Downing led the Cards with two hits including a double and an RBI. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run triple, Eric Hosmer had an RBI double and Jurickson Profar delivered an RBI single among his three hits, helping the Padres take three of four in the series. —Orlando Arcia’s pinch-hit single with two outs in the eighth inning drove in the tiebreaking run as the Milwaukee Brewers slipped past the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5 on Monday night. Josh Hader pitched a perfect ninth for his eighth save in his first appearance since walking five of the six batters he faced while trying to close out Saturday night’s game. Hader has yet to give up a hit this season.

—Maikel Franco and Bubba Starling had RBI singles in the eighth inning as the Kansas City Royals rallied to beat the Cleveland Indians 2-1 in the first game of a three-game series. Rockies finish series with San Diego, welcome another division rival Tuesday

(AP) A new court filing shows that Big Ten presidents voted 11-3 to postpone the football season until spring. The court filing is the Big Ten's response to a lawsuit brought by a group of Nebraska football players who want the fall season reinstated. The Big Ten announced Aug. 11 it would move its football season from fall  to spring because of health risks associated with the coronavirus pandemic. The filing did not identify how each school specifically voted, but a person familiar with the outcome told The Associated Press Iowa, Nebraska and Ohio State voted against postponing the fall football season.

Chadron State football may happen this fall on a limited basis, Eagles' Athletic Director Joel Smith said Monday. "We're hoping to play a few games in October," Smith said. "It depends on if we can comply with the COVID testing that the NCAA says is necessary. Smith added that not all the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams are interested in playing this fall, but a few besides the Eagles are exploring the possibilities. CSC Head Coach&nbsp;Jay Long&nbsp;said if the arrangements can be completed, the Eagles would practice for three weeks and then play on Saturdays.&nbsp; The NCAA has ruled that players can participate in five games without using a year of eligibility.&nbsp; About 130 Chadron State football players have been taking part in weight training and conditioning three times a week the past two weeks. The CSC women's golf team is due to start its season on Monday, Sept. 14.&nbsp; The cross country team is also expected to compete this fall, but the schedule is still being worked out, track coach&nbsp;Riley Northrup&nbsp;said. Volleyball Coach&nbsp;Jennifer Stadler&nbsp;said Monday that no RMAC matches will take place this fall.&nbsp; "All of our matches are going to be played in the spring, but we're still trying to work out the schedules," Stadler said.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The CSC rodeo set for Sept. 11-13 will open the Central Rocky Mountain Region's fall schedule, as usual, Coach&nbsp;Dustin Luper&nbsp;said Monday.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The Celtics have opened their Eastern Conference semifinal series with a surprisingly easy victory against the defending champs, 112-94 over the Raptors.

Jayson Tatum and Marcus Smart each scored 21 points for the Celtics, who never trailed and improved to 4-1 versus Toronto this season. Brad Stevens’ club is the only one to knock off the Raptors more than twice.

Kemba Walker added 18 points and 10 assists, while Daniel Theiss (tys) delivered 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Toronto has dropped its two meetings with Boston in the bubble by a combined 40 points. The Raptors are 11-0 against everyone else.

Kyle Lowry had a team-high 17 points for the Raptors.

The Clippers have advanced to the Western Conference semifinals by taking out Luka Doncic and the Mavericks in six games.
