NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball has pushed back opening day until mid-May at the earliest because of the coronavirus. The move came Monday after the federal government recommended restricting events of more than 50 people for the next eight weeks. 

Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred made the announcement following a conference call with executives of the 30 teams. MLB says it is committed to playing as many games as possible when the season begins. 

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended Sunday that gatherings of 50 people or more be canceled or postponed across the country for the next eight weeks.&nbsp;

Looking regionally, eight weeks from today means the earliest start of the Colorado Rockies season would be May 11 at Coors Field against the San Francisco Giants.&nbsp; If that's the case 39 games will fall off the front of the schedule and there's no indication yet as to how MLB plans to make up any of those games or if they will ultimately be canceled.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, mid-May could also be defined as May 18, which would add on the San Francisco series as well as a road series at the Miami Marlins to the list.&nbsp; Should that be the case, 46 games will not be played as scheduled, and the Rockies would then open the new season on the road at the Chicago White Sox, Tuesday, May 19.

ENGLEWOOD, Colorado (AP) —  Veteran cornerback Chris Harris Jr. is about to test unfettered free agency for the first time in his nearly decade-long career. 

Harris wasn't highly recruited out of Bixby High School in Oklahoma and didn't garner much interest coming out of the University of Kansas four years later. 

He signed with Denver as an undrafted free agent and has made four Pro Bowls and earned more than $50 million in his career. He figures his time in Denver is coming to a close after the Broncos acquired cornerback A.J. Bouye in a trade with Jacksonville earlier this month.&nbsp;

The Nebraska School Activities Association has made the decision to suspend all competitions, activities and games through April 2, effective immediately.

All practices are also suspended through March 30, and the dates for both could change as the coronavirus situation evolves.

There's no immediate word on if the events will be made up or simply canceled.

Game off: NSAA suspends all high school competitions until April 2



The Chadron State College High School Invitational track and field meet, which was scheduled for Saturday, March 21, has been canceled. No makeup date is set at this time.

The CSC track and field coaching staff will be in touch with high school coaches regarding any further details.

Chadron State's current Mid-Term Break was extended on Friday until March 22, in light of public health recommendations regarding the COVID-19 virus, and the NCAA placed a mandatory dead period on recruiting that extends through April 15.

CSC High School Track-&-Field Invite canceled

The Chadron State College spring sports season is over.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference has just announced that the league is canceling the remainder of spring competitions and travel.

The announcement covers only competition and travel, which at this time indicates practices are not included in the cancellation.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Other conferences nationwide have also made similar moves in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) scare by canceling or suspending spring competition and post-season events.

Chadron State softball will finish the season 10-13 and will lose out on a total of 28 games, plus a possible RMAC Tournament berth.

CSC women's golf had two tournaments plus the RMAC Championships remaining that will not be played.

The CSC outdoor track-&amp;-field season will not even get the chance to compete - losing out on all seven meets on the slate, plus the NCAA Championships.

It's still unclear from the RMAC as to the status of spring football practice limitations, cancellation or proceeding as scheduled.&nbsp; Institutions and the league are likely still hammering out those details and deciding how to proceed.

We will continue to monitor this development and update this story as more details are released.&nbsp; The RMAC is expected to have more details on plans moving forward.

Friday Semifinals: #6 Omaha Roncalli 68, Scottsbluff 55

1st Round Notes: Alliance jumped out to an early lead 13-5 after a quarter...Scottsbluff put together a huge second half, especially in the fourth quarter with a 22-11 run...Scottsbluff's Dawson Mohr led with 15 points and hit two threes in the 4th quarter....Chance Parker scored 14, Jasiya DeOllos scored 12 points for Scottsbluff...Alliance was paced by Trevor DuBray's 15 points, 10 coming in the opening quarter...Scottsbluff won the season series over the Bulldogs 4-0...

The good news is a western Nebraska team is guaranteed a spot in the state basketball semifinals.&nbsp; The bad news is two-fold: a western Nebraska team is guaranteed to bow-out in the first round and two teams that have seen plenty of each other already have to travel approximately 800 miles combined to play...again.&nbsp;

This is the fourth time Alliance and Scottsbluff will face each other on the court this season, the first three went to the Bearcats by 16 in the season-opening Western Conference Tournament, by nine at Scottsbluff in early February, and 11 points in the B-8 subdistrict finals.

Almost every fan I talk to likes to see fresh opponents at state, but the Panhandle match-up at this point isn't unusual for Scottsbluff.&nbsp; Over the past dozen seasons Scottsbluff has faced Sidney twice, in 2009 and 2015.&nbsp; It happens to western schools across other sports as well, seemingly at least once every couple years.

A pair of terrific guards set the pace for the Bearcats with senior Jasiya DeOllos (20.3 ppg) and Dawson Mohr (16.2 ppg).&nbsp; They're also tough in the post with two more scoring options in senior Sam Clarkson (8.7 ppg) and 6'6" senior Chancelor Parke (9.4 ppg, 8.7 rpg).

Alliance will counter that balanced attack with senior guards Joel Baker (17.0 ppg) and Trevor DuBray (8.6 ppg).&nbsp; There's two big men who will compliment the backcourt in 6'5" junior Caeson Clarke (8.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg) and 6'5" senior Bradyn Palmer (9.3 ppg)

If Alliance can move on they'll be in the mix for its second state championship (2001) and will be back into the semifinals for the first time since 2017 after bowing out to Aurora in last season's opener.

Scottsbluff has been a tournament mainstay over the years and makes its 42nd trip in 2020.&nbsp; The Bearcats are looking for a 5th state title and first since 2012.&nbsp; Last year the Bearcats were ousted by Lincoln Pius X 83-43 in the opener.

The Ogallala Indians are back at state for the third straight season and looking to take the title after finishing in 3rd place in 2019.&nbsp; After two seasons away, Kearney Catholic is back at state hoping to advance out of the first round for the first time since 2004.

Ogallala (21-4) has a nice club with senior guards Carter Brown (17.6 ppg) and Clayton Murphy (8.3 ppg) who also provide length defensively. Six-five junior Kadyn Marhenke is second in scoring (14.6 ppg) and will team with senior 6'4" Adam Kroeger (10.8 ppg) to provide the offensive punch inside.

The Indians earned their trip to Lincoln with a 76-51 district finals victory over Battle Creek and have won four in a row overall.

Kearney Catholic (18-7) is on a three-game winning streak and are champions of the C1-8 district with a 39-28 grinder over Bishop Neumann.

The Stars rely heavily on 6'3" sophomore Brett Mahoney to provide the bulk of the scoring inside (16.0 ppg) and team him with senior guard Logan O'Brien (10.6) in the backcourt.&nbsp;&nbsp;

1st Round Notes: Mullen escaped from a close game throughout to knock out the Cardinals with Bryce Wright scoring a team-high 18 points, including eight in the second quarter...Brenden Walker had 11 for the Broncos...

The Mullen Broncos will try and win a second state championship since 2017 but draw a tough opponent in St. Mary's in the D2 bracket.

Mullen (21-5) comes in hot with a seven-game win streak following a blowout over Exeter-Milligan in the D2-4 district championship.&nbsp; This is Mullen's 16th state appearance and first time back since 2018 - a 3rd place finish.

St. Mary's (19-5) rolled Hyannis 74-42 in the D2-5 championship and has lost just once since January 16.&nbsp; The Cardinals have been to State five times since 2008, won the D1 title in 2012, and make its first appearance since 2013 - a 3rd place finish.

St. Mary's will have its defensive hands full with five scoring options presented by a balanced Mullen attack.&nbsp; Junior guard Brendon Walker leads the bunch at 14.9 ppg.&nbsp; In the paint, 6'2" freshman Clayton Moore scores 11.9 a game.&nbsp; The Broncos will also feature 6'3" sophomore Jaden Emerson (8.7 ppg) and 6'2" junior Bryce McIntosh (7.2 ppg).&nbsp; Rounding out the group is sophomore guard Trevor Kuncl (11.2 ppg) and Mullen looks set-up not only for a potential title run this year, but to also challenge for state berths in the next two years moving forward.

🏀 Boys State Hoops - Ogallala to State Finals; Scottsbluff, Mullen lose

Chadron State is feeling its athletics world come to a screeching halt along with the rest of the nation as we all begin to understand just how serious containing the spread of COVID-19 has become by&nbsp; watching college and professional sports leagues canceling or postponing events, and seasons.

The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference issued a statement Thursday evening saying that all championships and non-championships would be suspended through April 6.&nbsp;

Chadron State wrestlers and track-&amp;-field National Championship qualifiers will not be competing this weekend as all NCAA championships have been canceled.

The RMAC went on to note that limitations were being put on fall sports that are currently practicing or about to, such as spring football.&nbsp; The extent of those limitations isn't fully clear and we are working with CSC athletics to determine what the RMAC's decision means for the upcoming CSC spring football schedule set to begin on March 23, as well as the spring game April 18.

Chadron State softball was supposed to play at MSU-Denver this weekend but those four games - as well as a dozen others, 16 in all - have been wiped off the slate.

By: Dave Collins, Eagle Radio Chadron - Sports DirectorChadron State is feeling its athletics world come to a screeching halt along with the rest of the nation as we all begin to understand just how serious containing the spread of COVID-19 has become by&nbsp; watching college and professional sports leagues canceling or postponing events, and seasons.The Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference issued a statement Thursday evening saying that all championships and non-championships would be suspended through April 6.&nbsp;Chadron State wrestlers and track-&amp;-field National Championship qualifiers will not be competing this weekend as all NCAA championships have been canceled.The RMAC went on to note that limitations were being put on fall sports that are currently practicing or about to, such as spring football.&nbsp; The extent of those limitations isn't fully clear and we are working with CSC athletics to determine what the RMAC's decision means for the upcoming CSC spring football schedule set to begin on March 23, as well as the spring game April 18.Chadron State softball was supposed to play at MSU-Denver this weekend but those four games - as well as a dozen others, 16 in all - have been wiped off the slate.The <a href="https://rmacsports.org/news/2020/3/12/baseball-rmacs-official-statement-regarding-covid19.aspx">RMAC's official statement can be read here</a>.Continue to monitor the situation, schedules and updates here and through my Twitter feed @DMCbroadcasting as well as in our morning sports reports on 94.7, 97.5 and 105.9 FM.

Coronavirus and sports: Where do we stand? What is closed?

The sports world is seeing dramatic change to its short-term schedule because America is trying to stop the rapid spread of the coronavirus.

Whitney Roth is a former Chadron State assistant volleyball coach and also took over as interim head coach mid-season in 2015. She gave us a unique insider's account of the situation involving the Southeastern Conference (SEC) and the coronavirus' impact on her program.

Roth is the Director of Volleyball Operations at the University of Arkansas and tells us, "We already cancelled a scrimmage tomorrow (Friday) but have two in April that are still pending. All off/on campus recruiting is shut down as well. Our coaches are supposed to be out recruiting the next few weekends and they can no longer go out."

She added, "Most of the club tournaments are cancelled but we had some individual club visits that we were going to but can no longer do."

Major League Baseball expected to cancel Spring Training, could delay start of season

NEW YORK (AP) — People familiar with the discussions tell The Associated Press that Major League Baseball is likely to cancel the rest of its spring training game schedule due to the coronavirus and probably will announce that the start of the season will be delayed. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because no decision had been announced. They said baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred planned a conference call with his executive council to discuss the situation and then a call with controlling owners of the 30 clubs. An announcement would follow. The season had been scheduled to start March 26.

NBA season suspended until further&nbsp;notice

MIAMI (AP) — The NBA has suspended its season “until further notice" after a Utah Jazz player tested positive Wednesday for the coronavirus, a move that came only hours after the majority of the league's owners were leaning toward playing games without fans in arenas. 

Now there will be no games at all, at least for the time being. A person with knowledge of the situation said the Jazz player who tested positive was center Rudy Gobert.

The league says it will use the hiatus to determine next steps for moving forward regarding the pandemic.

In a bizarre circumstance, the test result was reported shortly before the scheduled tip-off of the Jazz-Thunder game in Oklahoma City. Players were on the floor for warmups and the opening tip was moments away when they were sent to their locker rooms. Fans were told about 30 minutes later that the game was postponed “due to unforeseen circumstances."

Wednesday’s Pelicans-Kings game also was postponed right before tip-off with fans in the stands and ESPN promoting the game coming up on TV, due to the virus. The league says the game was postponed “out of an abundance of caution because one of the referees assigned to work in the game also worked a Utah Jazz game earlier this week.

NCAA March Madness Tournament - No Fans Allowed

The NBA became the first major American sports league to suspend play because of the coronavirus pandemic, raising questions about the future of college basketball's March Madness and other pro sports. It looked as if the NBA might be moving toward playing in empty arenas before it announced that a Utah Jazz player tested positive for the coronavirus and it had decided press pause on its season. NCAA President Mark Emmert announced earlier in the day that only essential staff and limited family will be allowed to attend the upcoming NCAA basketball tournaments.&nbsp;

UPDATE: College Basketball Conference Tournaments Canceled

Several college basketball conference tournaments have been canceled moments before tipoff, putting the NCAA Tournament at risk. The Big Ten, Big 12 and the SEC tournaments announced they were off, and other conferences were expected to follow suit. The men's NCAA Tournament is one of the most popular events on the American sports calendar. March Madness draws hundreds of thousands of fans to arenas from coast to coast.

Each of the Power Five basketball tournaments will proceed without fans beginning with Thursday's games. ACC games will be played only with teams, player guests, limited school administrators and credentialed media present. Big 12 squads will be allowed 125 tickets on a game-by-game basis beginning with Thursday's quarterfinals. Big Ten attendance will be limited to team personnel, conference staff, TV network partners, credentialed media and immediate family members of the participating teams. The SEC also says fans will be kept out of all regular-season events on its campuses and other league championships through at least March 30.

Ivy League cancels all spring sports seasons

The Ivy League has canceled all spring sports, as many of its schools told students not to return from spring break and prepare for classes to be taught online. The league already had canceled its men's and women's basketball tournaments.

MLB's&nbsp; Mariners moving March games out of Seattle

The Mariners are moving their first two series out of Seattle in an effort to slow the coronavirus outbreak. The Mariners and Major League Baseball have not announced where they will play the team's season-opening, four-game series against the Texas Rangers scheduled for March 26-29.

Chadron State softball games will be played - No Fans Allowed

Chadron State will play a softball series Saturday and Sunday in Denver against MSU-Denver.&nbsp; The school says fans will not be allowed to attend those games.&nbsp; Colorado School of Mines is taking a similar measure for its home athletic events in Golden immediately as well.

Major League Soccer canceling games for 30 days

&nbsp;Major League Soccer is shutting down for 30 days because of the coronavirus, delaying the home opener for the expansion team co-owned by former England captain David Beckham. MLS Commissioner says the decision was based on advice and guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Public Health Agency of Canada and other public health authorities. Beckham and Jorge Mas co-own Inter Miami, which had been scheduled to play its home opener Saturday. MLS started its season on Feb. 29 and each of the 26 teams has played two league matches.

In accordance with Wednesday's announcement from the Big Ten Conference, all University of Nebraska home sports competitions will be closed to the public effective immediately.

As of today, all Nebraska home games and competitions will take place as scheduled, but will be limited to student-athletes, coaches, essential staff and personnel, credentialed members of the media and immediate family members of the participating teams.

Further discussion on the status of the Red-White spring football game on April 18 at Memorial Stadium and Nebraska volleyball's April 25 spring match in Grand Island will occur in the coming days.

The main priority of the Big Ten Conference and University of Nebraska is to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, fans and media as we continue to monitor all relevant information on the COVID-19 virus on a daily basis.&nbsp;&nbsp;

We regret that non-varsity boys’ basketball participants, cheerleaders, dance teams, school mascots and pep bands may not attend the games. In addition, the US Bank Believers and Achievers award and NSAA Distinguished Service Awards will not be presented at this event but will be rescheduled.

Anyone not on the approved list who previously purchased a ticket will not be allowed entry. Passes will not be honored including NCA Gold Card, NSAA Courtesy Passes and Lifetime passes. This measure is to protect the health and safety of the student athletes, their families and the public at large.

Breaking News-Updated: Boys State Tournament will be held without fans

By Scott Carlson-NP Post LINCOLN, Neb.-To play or not to play is not necessarily the question being asked in reference to the Nebraska Boys State Basketball Tournament in Lincoln. Rather, the question is who will be allowed to watch.

Health officials in the City of Lincoln held a news conference this morning and recommended that the tournament, which starts tomorrow, be played with immediate family only allowed to spectate.

According to the NSAA, teams will construct a "pass list" that they will turn over to NSAA. Anyone on the new pass list will have to buy new tickets to the events.&nbsp;

The recommendation comes after confirmation of a fifth case of the COVID-19 coronavirus in Nebraska.

Officials say a high-school-aged student who tested positive for COVID-19 attended two games at the Girls State Basketball Tournament last weekend and went down onto the floor after the game to hug family members, potentially exposing hundreds of people to the virus, according to officials.

The woman reportedly stayed with family members in Lincoln, and those family members are now in self-quarantine.

The Nebraska School Activities Association is meeting to discuss what the tournament this weekend will look like and who will be allowed in venues during the tournament.

Lincoln – Nebraska men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg announced Tuesday afternoon that Husker football players Brant Banks and Noah Vedral have been added the basketball program. Both players will accompany the team to the Big Ten Tournament and will be available for  Wednesday's first-round game against Indiana.

• Served as Nebraska's backup quarterback in 2019, playing in six games with a pair of starts

• Completed 14-of-16 passes for 201 yards and rushed seven times for 21 yards and two scores vs. Indiana

• Started his career at UCF under Coach Frost, playing in eight games as a true freshman as the Knights went a perfect 13-0

• Named the Lincoln Journal Star Co-Athlete of the Year in 2017, as he played football, basketball and track at Bishop Neumann High School

• Played four years of basketball, helping the school to three C-1 state titles and a 98-16 record

• Two-time all-state pick who totaled 1,286 points and 267 career steals

• Averaged 13.6 ppg as a senior and 14.1 ppg as a junior, leading Bishop Neumann HS to back-to-back state titles

The University of Nebraska and Opendorse announced today the launch of the first-ever program designed to help student-athletes build their individual brands. The program will provide all 650-plus Nebraska student-athletes social media solutions with proven effectiveness at the highest levels of professional sports.
