CHADRON, Neb. -- February 27, 2020 -- Chadron State College will open its home softball schedule one day earlier than expected, due to a snowy forecast for Sunday. The Eagles will work to brush the snow currently laying on the field, in time to play a doubleheader against Regis University at noon on Friday, followed by another beginning at 11 a.m. on Saturday.

The visitors enter the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference series 3-0 in league play, after sweeping Adams State in their own first weekend at home on Saturday. Those games in Denver were shifted around as well. The Rangers ended up hosting a tripleheader and cancelling the Sunday portion of their scheduled four-game series.

Regis' overall record improved to .500 on the season in its first conference action, moving to 6-6 after a slow start. The Rangers' bats finally clicked last weekend versus Adams, when they went off for 32 runs on 34 base hits, led by senior center fielder Laura Scheffel, who accounted for half of those runs, either as a batter or a baserunner.

Like Chadron State, the Regis team relies on a younger pool of talent.

The Rangers' leading batter is freshman third baseman Shayelyn at an average of .414 with three doubles and nine runs scored. She has zero errors in the field as well, through 12 starts.

Next best in the batter's box is sophomore shortstop Jessi Case, who bats .394 and leads the team in slugging, stolen bases, and runs scored,

Sophomore catcher Carly Beard was one of the two players selected by the league as one to watch as well. However she has struggled out of the gate and only has four base hits this year.

Freshman Kara Rodeheaver leads a trio of starting pitchers, all of whom register a .500 record. Rodeheaver has a team-best earned runs average of 4.20 and allows opponents to hit only .287, starting half of the Rangers' games. Veteran Taylor Armitage, a senior, also returns.

The Rangers were picked by the RMAC coaches to finish eighth in the league, in a preseason poll. Chadron State was 10th in the same poll.

The Eagles feature a mix of veterans and newcomers, with four freshmen stepping into starting roles so far.

CSC is 5-10 overall but has led or been tied midway through all but two of the losses. The team opened its conference schedule last weekend in Grand Junction, where it started 0-4 against the defending regular season champ.

Sophomore shortstop Bailey Marvel, the leading returner in the batter's box, is one of five Eagles batting .300 or better, with an average of .375. She is matched for batting average by utility pitcher Gabby Russell. Close behind the pair is freshman second baseman Addison Spears, who leads the team with 17 RBI. Outfielders Angelica Maples, a senior, and freshman Mackenzi Kroll have each batted .333 and are numbers one and two, respectively, in home runs, with seven combined.

Freshman DeAnna Barrera and junior Tia Kohl, both newcomers to the team, take up the bulk of the pitching duties. Barrera leads the team and is fifth in the league with a 2.90 ERA. She holds opponents to a .249 batting average and has fanned 39 batters.

Last season when the two teams met in Denver, each team swept a daily doubleheader. CSC won 9-7 and 14-5 on Saturday of the series, while Regis pulled out wins by scores of 8-3 and 6-3 on Sunday. Outfielder Ellie Owens, now a senior, and Marvel each finished with an 8-of-15 weekend batting, while Owens added six RBI and three runs scored.

CSC softball home opener moved to Friday

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska appears poised to allow college athletes to sign endorsement deals with sneaker companies, car dealerships and other sponsors after a measure cleared a major legislative hurdle. The measure advanced through the first of three required votes on Tuesday. 

It had bipartisan support in the officially nonpartisan Legislature. California last year became the first state to let college athletes use their status to make money. 

Other states are considering similar measures, though the NCAA has take steps to address it on a national level. 

The moves follow criticism that universities and athletic sponsors are getting rich off athletes who don't get a share of the wealth.

First hurdle towards college athlete sponsorships cleared in Nebraska 

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — After a signature road win against then-No. 9 Penn State nearly a week ago, Illinois coach Brad Underwood was concerned about the let-down game.

All the pieces were there on Monday, playing a Nebraska team on an 11-game losing streak at home.

Instead, Illinois took care of business. Ayo Dosunmu scored 18 points and freshman center Kofi Cockburn added 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Illini past Nebraska 71-59.

“I just try to make whatever the right play I need to make,” Dosunmu said.

Trent Frazier and Andres Feliz added 11 points each for Illinois (18-9, 10-6). Illinois moved into a five-way tie for second place in the Big Ten Conference.

Haanif Cheatham led Nebraska (7-20, 2-14) with 14 points. Dachon Burke Jr. scored 13 points and Yvan Ouedraogo and Thorir Thorbjarnarson had 11 each.

Nebraska was playing without second-leading scorer Cam Mack (12 points per game average, who missed the trip to Champaign with the flu.

Monday’s loss was a school-record 12th consecutive loss for the Cornhuskers.

“Illinois is a team that is built for the post season, especially with those guards,” said Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg. “But I’m proud of my guys no matter the outcome.”

The first half was close, but Illinois went on a 6-0 run capped by a 70-foot shot at the buzzer by Frazier that was all net. The Illini led 37-31 at the break.

Nebraska outscored Illinois 15-9 to open the second half and tied the game at 46 with 15:11 left. But Illinois used its athleticism and size to put together a 21-9 run to create a 10-point cushion the Cornhuskers couldn’t overcome.

Illinois was 28 of 71 from the field (29%, while Nebraska was 24 of 57 (42%).

“Defense and rebounding won us the game,” Underwood said. “Trent (Frazier) is a maniac on the ball. He was solid on defense all night.”

“We just have to trust our defense when the offense is faltering,” Dosunmu said.

Illinois outrebounded the Cornhuskers 48-35, led by Cockburn’s 10 boards.

“They’re so good on the boards,” Hoiberg said. “With their guards and their big guys, it’s just tough.

Illinois had a tougher time than expected, but got the home win against a team they were expected to beat handily. The win keeps Illinois positioned for a post-season run.

Nebraska played well, especially in the first half, but couldn’t overcome Illinois’ talent, speed and defense. The loss of Mack was noticeable, despite a yeoman’s job by Burke.

Nebraska hosts No. 23 Ohio State on Thursday.

Illinois hopes for another key conference win when it travels to last-place Northwestern on Thursday.

Huskers drop school-record 12th straight game, 71-59 to Illinois

CHADRON, Neb. – February 24, 2020 – Chadron State College athletics, in conjunction with Lou's Sporting Goods of Fremont, Nebraska, has entered into an agreement with Adidas America, Inc., to make Adidas the exclusive brand of athletic products for the department, effective immediately.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- February 22, 2020 -- The Chadron State College softball team suffered a pair of close losses on Saturday with the start of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference season in Grand Junction, at Colorado Mesa University. The Mavericks, who received three first-place votes in the league's preseason coaches' poll and finished a close second in the voting, came back twice to win 3-2 and 4-1 on their home field.

The Eagles were up 2-0 headed into the sixth inning of game one, thanks to a third-inning, two-run homer by freshman Addison Spears.

CMU tied things up in the sixth, however. three-time All-American AnneMarie Torres led off the inning with a solo homer, and three straight singles scored a second run to make it 2-0.

In the seventh, the Mavs walked off to a Brooke Doumer RBI single following a double by Lauren Wedman.

CSC's DeAnna Barrera received the loss in a complete game effort, falling to 3-4, while CMU's number one, Shea Mauser, climbed to 5-1.

Similar to the first game, the Eagles led in the second game early, when junior Gabby Russell airmailed a solo shot over the right field wall with two out in the second.

The comeback was on for the Mavericks, though, in the fourth and fifth frames, when they scored two runs in each inning to go up 4-1. The lead held as CSC went hitless in the fourth through the seventh, and CMU's Paige Adair earned her first win of the season to start 1-1, tossing a three-hit, one-run game.

Eagles' pitcher Tia Kohl fell to 2-4 despite a four-hit effort. Two of her charged earned runs came from batters walked, as the CMU offense proved highly efficient.

CSC begins league play 0-2, and is 5-8 overall, after one day of the conference schedule. Mesa goes to 8-4 (0-2 RMAC).

Another doubleheader is plotted for Sunday, to begin at 11 a.m.

Eagles give up record-tying 18 three-pointers to NM Highlands in loss Saturday

CHADRON, Neb. -- February 22, 2020 -- A year ago when the New Mexico Highlands Cowboys visited Chadron State College for a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game, they took 33 shots from three-point range and made just five of them, perhaps setting a record for 3-point futility.  The Eagles won 80-69.

Saturday night, the Cowboys were back in town, fired 35 shots from behind the arc and sank 18 to match the number of most treys ever made against the Eagles.  Highlands won 96-76.    

The Eagles' shooting stats for the two games were similar.  They were 28 of 56 from the field, including 7-of-17 on three-pointers and 17 of 23 from the free throw line a year ago. This year, CSC was 26 of 58 from the field and 14 of 29 from long range to go with 10 of 17 at the charity stripe, but could not keep pace with hot-shooting Cowboys.

"You have to give them credit," CSC Head Men's Basketball Coach Houston Reed said. "Highlands had the better coaches, the better players and the better execution tonight. We had a slow start, got back in it, but didn't respond defensively the way I thought we could have."

Highlands jumped out to a 12-3 lead in the first 3 ½ minutes, but the Eagles scored the next nine points to tie the count and led at 20-19 and 22-21 before the Cowboys broke away. They were 18 of 28 from the field (64.3%, including 10 of 17 on threes, while building a 54-37 halftime lead.    

The visitors maintained at least a 15-point lead and were on top by as many as 32 (93-61) with 4:19 to play. The Eagles finished strong and were outscored by just three points, 42-39, in the second half.    

Now 17-9 for the season and 12-9 in the RMAC, the Cowboys shot 59 percent from the field for the game, including their 18 of 35 marksmanship from behind the arc.  The latter numbers are exactly what Montana State-Billings also launched on Nov. 21, 2017 in Billings to establish the all-time three-point high against the Eagles.   

The New Mexico team was led by senior Raquan Mitchell with 28 points while going 11 of 12 from the field, including five of six on treys.  Juniors Sammy Barnes-Thompkins and Desmond Carpenter each tallied 18 points while combining to nail 7 of 17 from downtown.

The Eagles didn't play badly, but could not keep pace despite getting 48 points from forward Brian Rodriguez and guard Michael Sparks.

Rodriguez was nine of 16 from the field, including four of nine on 3-pointers, and six of eight at the line, giving him 28 points to go with his career-high 35 Friday night during the Eagles' 82-73 win over Colorado State-Pueblo.

Sparks had just three points at halftime, but finished with 20 while making six of nine shots from behind the arc, including all four of his long range attempts in the game's final three minutes.

No one else had more than six points for the Eagles, who will wrap up their season next Friday night by hosting Metro State-Denver.

Eagles rally back to avoid upset, defeat Highlands 72-66

CHADRON, Neb. -- Taryn Foxen scored 31 points and Chadron State overcame an eight point deficit in the fourth quarter, helping them win their second straight game, 72-66 against New Mexico Highlands, Saturday night.

The win improves CSC to 7-23 overall and 5-16 in the conference. The Cowgirls drop to 1-25 and 0-21 in the RMAC.

"It was a tough game and we struggled for quite a while tonight," Head Coach Janet Raymer said. "We started believing in ourselves and came out at halftime with a different mindset."

Chadron State led 12-11 with 5:26 remaining in the first quarter, but a flurry of three pointers helped the Cowgirls gain the lead and hold it until 7:10 was left in the fourth period.

New Mexico Highlands led by ten in the third quarter, before Chadron State used a 10-1 scoring run to lower the deficit to one with 1:08 left. The Cowgirls closed the third period and opened the fourth on a 7-0 scoring run.

After a basket by Maiah Rivas to begin the final quarter, CSC responded with a 16-5 scoring run to gain the lead and never lost it. The Cowgirls tied the score at 66 with 2:30 to play, but didn't score the rest the game.

"The trust that the girls have in each other helped pull us through," Raymer said.

Chadron State shot 22 of 67 (32.8 percent) in the victory. The Eagles made nine of 28 attempts from three, five by Foxen, and were 19 of 27 from the charity stripe.

14 of CSC's free-throw attempts were in the first quarter.

The Cowgirls were 43.1 percent (22-51) from the field. They made 13 of 31 from three and nine of 14 free throws.

CSC outrebounded their opponent 49 to 30. 25 of those rebounds were offensive, the teams most since November 19,2005, against Johnson &amp; Wales of Denver.

The Eagles turned the 25 offensive boards into 28 second chance points, compared to their opponents zero.

"We knew going against a zone we needed to capitalize on the o-boards and we certainly did that tonight.

15 Eagle turnovers were turned into 21 points for the Cowgirls. Chadron State scored 19 points off Highland's 19 turnovers.

Foxen led the Eagles in scoring, followed by Jordan Morris with 14. Jessica Lovitt had a game high ten rebounds and Jori peters had seven assists.

Foxen finished one rebound short of a double-double, with nine, and Morris finished with eight boards.

Jordyn Lewis led the Cowgirls with 30 points, while making seven of the teams 13 threes. Rivas joined her in double-figures with 21.

The Eagles finish the season on Friday, February 28, when they host MSU-Denver.

Rodriguez-Flores explodes for 35 in Eagles win over CSU-Pueblo

CHADRON, Neb.&nbsp; -- Senior forward Brian Rodriguez fired in 35 points Friday night while leading the Chadron State College men's basketball team to an 82-73 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo in the Chicoine Center in Chadron.

The win broke the Eagles' 12-game losing streak and was their first since the holidays.

"It's a lot more fun when you win," Chadron State Coach Houston Reed acknowledged. "Brian took the right shots tonight. He found a rhythm. He wasn't hunting shots nearly as much. They just kind of came to him. When he's cooking, he is hard to guard."

Rodriguez's output, was double his season average and is the most by a Chadron State player since Marcus Ligons scored 35 points against CSU-Pueblo on the ThunderWolves home court on January 4, 2007.   The 6-foot-4 native of Phoenix was 13 of 17 from the field, including four of eight from 3-point range, and made all five of his free throws.

While Pueblo scored the game's first four points, the Eagles tallied the next eight and led the rest of the way. Their largest lead was 12 points (30-18) with five minutes left in the first half and three times in the second half.  The halftime score was 36-29.

A pair of 3-pointers by Pueblo's senior guard Donovan Oldham, cut the difference to just 48-46 with 14:22 to play in the second half.  The ThunderWolves also trimmed the margin to three points once and four twice, but they could never completely catch up.  

The last time it was four points was at 72-68 with 2:45 remaining.  Neither team scored again until Rodriguez sank three free throws nearly a minute later. The Eagles also got a driving layup from Brady Delimont and a pair of free throws by both Colby Jackson and Michael Sparks in the next 74 seconds to clinch the verdict.

Chadron State was 29 of 60 from the field, including 10 of 29 from long range, and was 14-16 at the line.  Pueblo was 26 of 53 from the field, including eight of 24 from behind the arc, and 13 of 21 at the charity stripe.

The Eagles out-rebounded the visitors 32-30 and had just eight turnovers - half the ThunderWolves' total.

Besides Rodriguez's 35 points, the Eagles got 13 from Jacob Jefferson to go with a game-high seven rebounds, 11 points from Sparks that included three of six on treys and 10 from Jackson besides six assists.

Oldham paced Pueblo with 26 points on 9-of-16 field goal shooting that included 5-of-10 on threes and three of four at the line. Another senior, Brandon McGhee, finished with 21 points on eight of 11 from the field, but only five of 11 at the charity stripe.

Bendeguz Bonifert added 12 points and Tyson Gilbert 10 for Pueblo, now 11-15 for the season and 8-11 in the RMAC.

Eagles' Coach Reed said a defensive adjustment helped his team hold down the ThunderWolves, who won 85-71 when they met on Jan. 18 in Pueblo.  In that game, 6-8 center James Anderson made 10 of 11 field goal shots while scoring 24 points.  Anderson took just two shots and did not score Friday night.

Chadron State, now 4-22 overall and 3-17 in the RMAC, will host New Mexico Highlands on Saturday night. The Cowboys improved to 11-9 in the conference by beating Metro State 77-71 Friday night in Denver.

 </figure>By: John Murphy, CSC Sports Information AssistantCHADRON, Neb. -- Chadron State snapped a seven-game losing streak and junior Taryn Foxen eclipsed the 1000-point mark for her career Friday night, as the Eagles defeated CSU-Pueblo 58-41.The win improves CSC to 6-23 overall and 4-16 in the RMAC. The Thunderwolves fall to 6-19 and 5-15 in conference play."We showed a lot of maturity tonight," Head Coach Janet Raymer said. "I'm really proud of how we were able to turn it around."CSC trailed 23 to 18 heading into halftime, but used a 26-10 advantage in the third quarter to gain the lead and never lost it. The Eagles led by 11 entering the final period of play and grew the lead to as large as 19 in the victory."We started attacking more in the second half," Raymer said.Chadron State finished 18-44 (40.9 percent) from the field. They made four of 11 attempts from three and were 18-24 from the charity stripe. CSC's 24 free throws are the third most they've attempted all season.The Thunderwolves shot 27.1 percent (13-48) from the field. Half of their shots were from three, making five of them. CSU-Pueblo made 10 of their 13 free throws.CSU-Pueblo had 21 turnovers in the loss, compared to CSC's 18. The Eagles scored 11 points off the Thunderwolve's turnovers. CSU-Pueblo had 14 points off turnovers in the loss.Foxen was the game's leading scorer, with 22 points. She is the first CSC player to eclipse 1000 points in their career since Kattie Ranta accomplished the feat in 2011-14.Jori Peters also scored in double-figures for CSC, with 10. Peters had a team high four assists, along with seven rebounds. Jordan Morris had a game high 10 rebounds and Haley Urbatsch scored a career high nine points in an Eagle uniform.JaNaiya Davis led the Thunderwolves with 18 points, while Khiya Adams added in ten. Davis had a game high five assists.The Eagles return to action tomorrow as they host New Mexico Highlands. The Cowgirls lost to MSU-Denver 82-55 Friday night.
