Jamal Murray scored 14 of his 26 points in the fourth quarter to help the Denver Nuggets rally from 23 down to beat the San Antonio Spurs 127-120. The Toronto Raptors have run their franchise-record winning streak to 15 games by outscoring the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The Shrine Bowl of Nebraska Board of Directors released the rosters for the 62nd Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl Game on Saturday.

Head Coaches Mark Macke (Lincoln High) and Ryan Thompson (Ashland-Greenwood) together with their coaching staffs each chose from nominated seniors in their designated regions to represent their respective high schools, as well as North or South, in the 2020 Nebraska Shrine Bowl.

The 62nd annual Shrine Bowl of Nebraska game will take place June 6th at 2:00 PM  CT, at the University of Kearney campus at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium Foster Field

LUBBOCK, Texas – February 8, 2020 – Chadron State College senior outfielder Angelica Maples hit three home runs Saturday, including a three-RBI shot against Texas-Permian Basin's top returning pitcher from 2019, as the Eagles clipped the Falcons 13-2 but fell 10-5 to Oklahoma Baptist University in Lubbock.

Maples hit solo homers in both games as well. She finished the day 3-for-7 with five RBI and three runs scored.

CSC scored its first two runs of the day on solo homers after OBU grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second. Bison pitcher Katie Long struck out four of the first six Eagles batters, before Maples caught her to lead off the third inning.

Leading off the fourth, CSC freshman third baseman Sloane Quijas repeated the feat, and the game was tied three batters later, when freshman Mackenzi Kroll sacrificed junior Alyx Gragg forward and senior Allie Mason singled her home to make it 3-3.

OBU used a pair of home runs and a CSC error to break the game open in the bottom of the fourth, going 6-for-9 in the inning and claiming a 10-3 advantage.

Kroll's two-run shot in the sixth, which plated Gragg making it 10-5, was the only other time the Eagles managed to score. It was a second consecutive game in which Kroll, who pinch-hit for Bailey Rominger on Friday, managed to put a pitch over the wall.

Junior Tia Kohl took her second loss in as many days for the Eagles, while Aspen Younce, entering a tie game in the fourth, was credited the win for the Bison.

CSC fared much better in the latter half of the day, when Gragg's RBI single in the first inning against UTPB, and her two-run homer in the second, provided all the offense needed in a 13-2 afternoon romp.

Gragg batted 4-for-4 in the win, finishing the day 6-of-8 with five runs scored to lead Chadron State.

Freshman DeAnna Barrera scattered four hits over six innings and struck out eight, leading the Eagles to victory for the second time in as many tries. Permian Basin Freshman Abby Cousins took her first loss of the season.

Highlights from the second game include two of Maples' three home runs on the day, as well as the Eagles' final two at-bats, when everyone in the first seven batting slots got at least one base hit, and CSC piled up nine runs to end the game in the sixth.

CSC concludes its Lubbock trip with two more contests on Sunday.

The Eagles, who are now 2-2 after two days, play Southern Nazarene University at 11 a.m. MT. They conclude with a non-conference game against the University of Colorado Colorado Springs at 1 p.m. That final contest was added at the last minute to replace a cancelled matchup with Eastern New Mexico.

Eagles comeback falls short against Mountain Lions

CHADRON, Neb. – Chadron State narrowed the UCCS lead to three with 49 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, but were unable to overcome a 22-5 first quarter deficit Saturday night, falling to the Mountain Lions 70-64.

CSC falls to 5-21 on the season and 3-14 in the RMAC. UCCS improves to 7-16 and 6-11 in conference play.

The Mountain Lions outscored the Eagles 22-5 in the first quarter and led 43-29 at half.

"We got down too far in the beginning," said CSC Head Women's Basketball Janet Raymer, "and we just couldn't quite get out of that hole.

CSC outscored their opponent by two in the third quarter and six in the fourth, and lowered the UCCS lead to three twice, but missed four of their final five field goal attempts in the final minute.  UCCS made five of six from the charity stripe in that timeframe to seal the win.

The Eagles shot 41.5 percent (22-53) from the field in the loss. Seven of their 23 three-pointers were good and 13 of 22 attempts from the charity stripe were made.

After shooting 56 percent in the first half, UCCS finished the game 44.4 percent (28-63) from the field. The Mountain Lions only made two of their 16 shots from behind the arc, but converted 12 of 16 free throws.

Chadron State had 19 turnovers in the loss, compared to the visitors 11. The Eagles turnovers resulted in 21 Mountain Lion points, while CSC scored seven points off the Mountain Lion turnovers.

"We turned the ball over too much, and we got into an uphill battle. That's not the battle we want. We want to battle even," Raymer said.

Both teams had 34 rebounds in the contest.

Taryn Foxen led both teams with 20 points, followed by Jessican Lovitt with 11 for the Eagles. Jori Peters scored five points, to go along with a team high seven rebounds and five assists.

Ellie Moore led the Mountain Lions with 12 points. No other UCCS players scored in double-figures, but six different players had eight points.

CSC returns to the road as they travel to their only south opponents. The Eagles will face South Dakota School of Mines on Friday and Black Hills State on Saturday. Both teams defeated Chadron State two weeks ago.

CHADRON, Neb. -- February 8, 2020 -- The struggles continued for the Chadron State College men's basketball Saturday night, when Colorado-Colorado Springs broke a 54-54 tie midway in the second half and went on to defeat the Eagles 75-62 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference contest in Chadron.

Chadron State shot 53.8 percent (14-26) from the field in the first half while building a 40-34 halftime lead. But the Eagles went cold in the second half when they hit just 29 percent (9-31) and were outscored 41-22.

Things got worse the longer the game continued for the hosts. They made only three of 15 field goal tries in the final 8 ½ minutes after they'd tied the score at 54 on an old-fashioned 3-point play by freshman Andre Sepeda.

Colorado Springs, now 15-7 overall and 11-6 in the RMAC, didn't blister the nets, making 11 of 30 shots (36.7%) in the opening half and 13 of 27 (48.1%) in the second half for 42 percent overall. But the Mountain Lions sank 10 three-pointers, twice as many as the Eagles, and outscored the hosts 17-11 from the free throw line.

Seniors Padiet Wang and Blend Avdili each scored 15 points to lead the visitors, while junior Parker Gaddis contributed 14 and freshman Alijah Comithier 12.

Chadron State's leading scorers were senior Brian Rodriguez and freshman Andre Sepeda with 16 apiece. While Rodriguez is the Eagles' leading scorer with a 16.7-point average, it was the first time Sepeda had scored in double figures.

Coach Houston Reed said he appreciated the energy the 5-foot-8 Greeley, Colo., product provided. Sepeda was six of eight from the field, including three of five from behind the arc, and the free shot.

"We needed a little spark tonight and got it from Andre," the coach noted.

Reed also liked the three consecutive layups provided by center Jacob Jefferson, in less than two minutes early in the second half, one of them after he'd grabbed a rebound. But Reed said in the final analysis, the Eagles "simply struggled to put the ball in the basket in the second half."

Eagles showcase new talent on opening day with split in Lubbock

LUBBOCK, Texas – February 7, 2020 – Chadron State College softball opened its 2020 season on Friday at the Lubbock Sports College Invitational, hosted by Lubbock Christian University. The Eagles split their first two games of the year, defeating Fort Hays State University 4-1 before falling 7-1 to their hosts.

All eight Eagles who started and ended the game in the batting order were able to reach base safely in CSC's earlier game against Fort Hays.

Meanwhile true freshman DeAnna Barrera, getting her first college start in the circle, kept a sheet clean of earned runs, giving up only one score in the first on a throwing error.

The rest of the scoring was done by Chadron State. Sophomore shortstop Bailey Marvel singled on in the third, stole second, and came home on an RBI single by freshman Sloane Quijas. Later, Quijas came in as well, scoring the winning run on a single by Ellie Owens.

After senior Bailey Rominger led off the fourth with a walk, consecutive singles by Marvel and freshman Addison Spears scored Rominger, putting CSC up 3-1.

Finally, Gabby Russell drove in Angelica Maples in the fifth inning to punctuate the score at 4-1.

The loss was the first of the season for Fort Hays, which defeated Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference member UC-Colorado Springs 14-10, earlier in the day, to begin its season

The Eagles left six baserunners stranded in the later game, which was decided by the same number of runs. Those were scattered over five separate innings, however, as Lubbock pitcher Jordan Wehr scattered four hits and a walk.

Each side committed only one error, but both shook off the dust early. The Chaps gave the Eagles a baserunner with a muffed throw in the top of the first, and advanced her on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, a walk put a Lubbock runner on the bases, and after two steals, a CSC error put her across the plate, giving the home team a 1-0 lead.

When Rominger homered to lead off the fifth inning, the Eagles finally busted their four-inning scoring drought and tied the game at one apiece.

However, the Chaps' bats finally began to ring true in the bottom of the fifth, and they ended CSC pitcher Tia Kohl's one-hitter with four runs on five base hits. They added two more runs on two hits in the sixth, for insurance.

Lubbock Christian remained perfect at 5-0 with the win, while CSC begins the season 1-1.

The Eagles are back in action at 9 a.m. MT on Saturday, with a morning game against Oklahoma Baptist University. They are scheduled to play Texas-Permian Basin at 1:30 p.m.

CHADRON, Neb. -- Denali Pinto scored 31 points and the Colorado School of Mines Orediggers rallied back from a 15-0 scoring run by CSC in the first quarter, to win 63-57, Friday night in the Chicoine Center.

Chadron State falls to 5-20 overall and 3-13 in conference play. Colorado School of Mines improves to 15-6 overall and 12-4 in the RMAC.

The Orediggers built an early 10-2 lead, before the Eagles scored 15 straight points. CSC led 22-17 and the end of the first period.

The score was tied at 29 with 5:32 remaining in the first half, but the Orediggers outscored Chadron State 12-4 to close the quarter and led by eight at halftime. Mines built their lead as large as 15 in the second half and led the rest the way.

Chadron State shot 21 of 48 (43.8 percent) from the field. They converted four of 11 shots from three and were 11 of 13 from the charity stripe.

Colorado School of Mines finished 35.7 percent (20 of 56) from the field. The Orediggers made 10 of 26 from behind the arc, five by Pinto, and converted 13 of 14 attempts from the charity stripe.

CSC had 14 turnovers in the loss, two more than their opponent. The Eagles had 15 points off turnovers, while Mines had 23.

Freshman Jordan Morris was one rebound shy of a double-double with 15 points and nine rebounds, leading CSC in both categories.

Pinto was the only double-digit scorer for Colorado School of Mines. Sammy Van Sickle had a game high 11 rebounds.  

Tomorrow, the Eagles host UCCS. The Mountain Lions fell to MSU-Denver 57-49, Friday night.

Colorado Mines cruises in men's game, 81-47

CHADRON, Neb. -- February 7, 2020 -- Colorado School of Mines broke a 16-16 tie midway through the first half, went on to build a 44-29 halftime margin and continued to pull away from homestanding Chadron State for an 81-47 victory Saturday night in a men's Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference basketball game. 

The Orediggers, now 15-8 for the season and 11-5 in the conference, shot 48 percent from the field in each half while finishing 28 of 58 for the game. Their point total included 11 of 31 from 3-point range and 14 of 17 at the free throw line.  

The visitors also outrebounded the Eagles 40-29, leading to a 17-4 margin in second chance points. They also had a 16-8 advantage in points off turnovers and a 34-18 spread in points in the paint. 

Although Mines jumped out to a 7-0 lead, the Eagles made seven of their first 11 shots to go ahead 16-13. That proved to be their only lead.  Chadron State finished the first half 12 of 24 from the field, but was just two of four from the free throw stripe to account for much of its 15-point intermission deficit  

Chadron State connected on just six of 29 field goal attempts in the second half while falling farther and farther behind. The Eagles' 47 total points are their season low by a dozen. 

"We had a lot of shots that we're capable of making, both those from four to six feet away and open shots from the perimeter, that didn't go down tonight," Chadron State Coach Houston Reed. "I'm frustrated and the players are frustrated, but I'd rather have guys who are frustrated than those who are apathetic. I know they'll keep working. We're a much better team than our won-loss record." 

The Eagles are now 3-19 for the season and 2-13 in the conference. 

Four Orediggers scored in double digits, led by junior forward Michael Glen with 19 points on seven of nine from the field, including two-of-two from behind the arc three-of-three at the line. Glen also was the leading games rebounder with nine.  

Kobi Betts added 13 points, Titus Reed 12 and Joe Miks 11 for Mines.  Each is also a junior.  

Chadron State's only double figure scorer was Brian Rodriguez with 12, all in the first half. He did not play in the second half after drawing his fourth foul on a technical just before halftime.  Colby Jackson and Kenan Gray each finished with eight points. 

The Eagles will host Colorado-Colorado Springs on Saturday night while Mines will return to the Denver area to play Metro State.  Colorado Springs toppled the Roadrunners 70-47 Friday night.

CHADRON, Neb. -- February 5, 2020 --&nbsp;The Chadron State College football program received 37 National Letters of Intent from prospective student-athletes on Wednesday, the first day of the 2020 high school signing period for NCAA Division II football.

"I'm really excited about this year's recruiting class," said CSC Head Football Coach&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/coaches.aspx?rc=387">Jay Long</a>. "We addressed many of our needs. There are a good balance of kids in the class who will have an opportunity to develop in the long term, and kids who will be able to compete right away."

The class consists of 18 who were recruited to play offense, 17 defensive players, one specialist, and one all-around athlete. Four are transfers who have previously played in college, while 33 were recruited out of high school.

At least 20 of the new signees have earned all-state recognition of some sort, with numerous conference, area, or regional accolades among them as well.

Five who signed letters for athletic scholarships are from Nebraska, starting right at home with Cooper Heusman&nbsp;of Chadron, who is expected to continue CSC's tradition of outstanding tight ends. Another local product is Sioux County's Tommy Watson, a six-man first team all-stater for the Warriors, who will be classified as an all-around athlete. One of the state's most highly-regarded quarterbacks is Clayton Murphy of Ogallala, who was responsible for dozens of touchdowns for the Indians. Finally two midstate&nbsp;linemen, Kien Martin of Overton and Chi Onate of Gibbon, round out the five from the home state.

They include a quarterback-receiver combo from Thunder Basin High in Gillette. Both receiver Blaine Allen and shot caller Mason Hamilton were first team all-state selections, with Hamilton making the Casper Star-Tribune Super 25. Other Super 25 members for 2019 include&nbsp;Jeydon Cox, a running back from Jackson, and&nbsp; Dax Yeradi&nbsp;of Wright, who is a three-time first team all-state selection at defensive back. Charles Beaudrie of Cody and and Dawson Hatch of Buffalo will also compete at defensive back, while Dean Shaw of Afton is brought in as a all-purpose back.

A whopping 17 of this year's class hail from Colorado.

Javian Byrd is a junior defensive back transfer from Golden West College in California, who originally enrolled at CSU-Pueblo. He attended George Washington High in Denver. The other 16 are high school recruits.

Offensive linemen Tyler Carpenter of Broomfield High and Sy Spitz of Lamar are both first team all-state selections, while defensive lineman Carson Berghuis&nbsp;of Wray and kicker Alberto Perez of Kersey were second teamers in their respective classifications. All-state honorable mention went to tight end Peter Krohn of Fort Collins, Hunter O'Connor of Legacy High in Broomfield, and receiver Grant Swenson, a teammate of Carpenter's. A total of six new Eagles are from Broomfield this year, adding receiver River Juarez of Broomfield High and linebacker Adam Lynch of Legacy.

Rounding out the front rangers are defensive lineman Jakob Chirico of Highlands Ranch, O-linemen Josh Gade of Northglenn and Ty Gish of Parker, linebacker Xavier Harrell of Centennial, lineman Jacob Nasalroad of Aurora, linebacker Tate Satterfield of Fort Collins, and defensive back Creighton Trembly of Longmont.

Three of four Californians in the signing class are transfers.

Matthew Bunnel, originally from San Juan Capistrano will transfer from Saddleback College. He projects as an outside linebacker or defensive end at 6-3, 250 pounds.

Monterey Peninsula College sends Jonathan Gonzalez, a 6-2, 178-pound defensive back who started on both offense and defense for the Lobos.

Jalen Starks, who was once listed as a 6-0, 265 pound fullback on the UCLA roster, brings a new look to the CSC running backs room. He is from Van Nuys.

The remaining recruit from the Golden State is Ronald McFoy, a defensive back from Rancho Verde High in Moreno Valley.

The lone South Dakota signee this year is Nick Lembke, a linebacker out of Rapid City's St. Thomas More High.

The remaining members of the signing class include defensive lineman Jamar Jackson of Greenville, Alabama, tight end Lloyd Love of Tucson, Arizona, and running back Jahon Moore of Hillside, N.J.

The players listed above are only the first to sign indicating their intent to join the Eagles. More are likely to follow in the weeks and months ahead.

Chadron State heads to Missouri, Oregon during 2020 football campaign

The Red Sox have agreed to trade 2018 AL MVP Mookie Betts to the Los Angeles Dodgers, two people with knowledge of the deal tell The Associated Press. 

The people spoke on condition of anonymity because the trade had not been announced. 

Boston packaged Betts with left-hander David Price in a salary dump that is expected to save the team tens of millions of dollars. The Dodgers are sending outfielder Alex Verdugo back to the Red Sox. The deal also involves the Minnesota Twins, who are getting right-hander Kenta Maeda from the Dodgers and sending pitching prospect Brusdar Graterol to Boston, according to reports by The Athletic and other outlets.

Nikola Jokic finished an assist shy of a triple-double in just three quarters, Gary Harris helped keep hot-shooting Damian Lillard in check and the Denver Nuggets routed the Portland Trail Blazers 127-99. Jokic had 29 points and 13 rebounds as the Nuggets improved to 8-0 against Northwest Division rivals this season. They held Lillard to 21 points, ending his string of eight straight games with at least 30.&nbsp;

&nbsp;The NBA’s reigning MVP got the better of the league’s No. 1 pick last season. Giannis Antetokounmpo delivered 34 points on 12 of 17 shooting and had 17 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks topped Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans, 120-108. Williamson finished with 20 points, but he shot just 5-for-19 and had seven rebounds in his first meeting with Antetokounmpo.

Khris Middleton had 20 points for the Bucks, who took control by outscoring the Pelicans 42-24 in the third quarter. The outcome leads Milwaukee with an NBA-best 42-7 record.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;One of the Panhandle’s most prominent athletic personalities, Dale Hendrickson of Kimball, will be inducted into the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame in Beatrice on Sunday, Feb. 9.&nbsp; He will be one of seven inductees, but one of only five among the hall’s 250 members with ties to the Panhandle.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hendrickson, now 83, was a standout baseball and basketball player, coached both of those sports after graduating from Chadron State College in 1960 and spent more than 35 years as a high school teacher, coach and activities director.

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;A hard-throwing left-hander, Hendrickson pitched Gering’s American Legion team to a state championship in 1953.&nbsp; The next summer, he pitched for the Chadron Elks town team and also signed a contract with the Milwaukee Braves at their tryout camp at Rushville.&nbsp; Although the camps continued 10 more years, he was the only participant ever offered a contract.

In the summer of 1955 while pitching for the Braves’ farm team in Lawton, Okla., Hendrickson became a rising star. He compiled a 24-8 record, including three playoff victories, and hurled 39 consecutive scoreless innings and 75 innings without permitting an earned run.

&nbsp; He also had an impressive 11-2 record the next year at Evansville, Ill., one of the Braves’ top minor league teams; then really drew widespread attention during spring training in 1957 while pitching against the Yankees in an exhibition game and struck out Mickey Mantle, Yogi Berra and Bill Skowran in the same inning and fanned Tony Kubek and Gil McDougald later in the game.

While Hendrickson never reached the majors, he played pro baseball seven years.&nbsp; In addition, he developed into an outstanding basketball player at Chadron State, scoring 860 points and is a member of the Eagles’ Athletic Hall of Fame.&nbsp;

After earning his degree from CSC, Hendrickson spent nine years teaching and coaching at Morrill and 27 years, including 24 as activities director, at Kimball before retiring in 1996. Several summers he also coached American Legion baseball.&nbsp; One of his teams at Morrill won a state championship and another Morrill team and two at Kimball qualified for the state tournament.

&nbsp;The baseball field in Kimball is named in his honor. He also was named that community’s Citizen of the Year and presented Outstanding Service to Youth and Outstanding Community Educator awards.&nbsp;

In addition, he was tabbed the Nebraska Athletic Director of the Year in 1995 and served as the organization’s president.

His wife, the former Gayle Babue, was a 1955 graduate of Chadron High.&nbsp; She died June 24, 2018.

About 20 of Hendrickson’s family members and friends have made reservations to attend the induction program.&nbsp;

The only others with Panhandle ties in the state’s Baseball Hall of Fame are Gene Leahy of Rushville, Leo Newell of Gering and Gary Neibauer of Scottsbluff. Johnny Hopp who played in nearly 1,400 games for six major league teams over a 14-year span ending in 1952, will be inducted posthumously on Sunday. He was a native Hastings, but was living in Scottsbluff when he died in 2003.

A spokesman said the Hall of Fame would like to receive nominations for potential inductees from the Panhandle. The material may be sent to Larry Bornschlagl, 1319 West Cademon Circle, Lincoln, NE 68523.

Western Nebraska native Nate Lashley finished off a spectacular Waste Management Phoenix Open with a top-three finish and a huge payday Sunday.

Lashley shot a tournament total 14-under par to finish in a third place tie with Justin Thomas and Bubba Watson.&nbsp; Lashley earned $386,900 from this week's event.

Lashley is a graduate of Mitchell High School.

Webb Simpson birdied the final two holes of regulation to force a playoff with Tony Finau, then won the Waste Management Phoenix Open with a 10-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole. Finau missed an 18-foot birdie try in the playoff on the par-4 18th after driving left into the church pew bunkers. Simpson two-putted for birdie from the fringe on the short par-4 17th and made a 17-footer for birdie from the edge of the green on the 18th. Finau missed a chance to win in regulation when his 8-foot birdie try slid right.
