CHADRON, Neb. -- Black Hills State held Chadron State to 21.4 percent from the field and outscored CSC 16-8 in the fourth quarter, while winning 70-60 in the Chicoine Center Friday night.

Taryn Foxen tied the game at 54 with 9:40 remaining in the fourth quarter, but the Yellow Jackets scored the next four points and held the lead the rest the game. CSC got the deficit to two, before Black Hills state finished the period on a 12-2 scoring run.

CSC shot 58 percent in the first half, compared to 26 in the second.

The Yellow Jackets were led by Morgan Ham with 23 points. Racquel Wientjes had 17 points and seven rebounds.

Foxen led the Eagles with a game high 27 points. Jordan Morris scored ten and had a game high nine rebounds.

The Eagles were 24 of 60 (40 percent, including seven of 17 from long range. Black Hills State finished 22 of 54 (40.7 percent, from the field and were 10 of 23 from three. The Yellow Jackets were 16 of 24 at the free throw line, while Chadron State was 5 of 9.

Chadron State was outrebounded by the hosts 37 to 36. Both teams committed 14 turnovers.

The loss drops the Eagles to 5-18 overall and 3-11 in the RMAC. The Yellow Jackets improve to 12-7 and 9-5 in conference play.

CSC returns to action tomorrow, as they play host to South Dakota Mines. The Hardrockers won their fourth straight game Friday, defeating MSU-Denver 58-52.

CHADRON, Neb. -- January 31, 2020 -- Trey Whitley poured in 37 points, Tyler Oliver tallied 22 and Joel Scott added 18 as the Black Hills State basketball team won its 12th straight game while defeating Chadron State 97-74 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference action in Chadron on Friday night.

The Yellow Jackets, now 15-5 overall and 12-2 while continuing to share the top spot in the conference with Dixie State, sank 36 of 62 field goal shots (58%). That included 10 of 20 on 3-point attempts, but driving past defenders to the basket also paid big dividends.  Fifty of their points were scored from in the paint.

Overall, Chadron State also shot well, making exactly half of their 54 shots from the field, including 12 of 28 from behind the arc. But after the score was knotted at 25-25 with 9:10 to play in the opening half, the Eagles hit the skids offensively and added just three more points before halftime, allowing the visitors to build a 46-28 intermission lead.

"Black Hills is a team that makes things difficult for you defensively," Chadron State Coach Houston Reed said. "They're the most well-rounded team we've seen because they've got so many different weapons they can throw at you."

A 6-foot-1 junior, Whitely led the Yellow Jackets onslaught, making 14 of 19 field goal shots, including four of six from long range, and most of the remaining 10 after driving to the bucket for layups. He also was five of six at the free throw line and came up with six steals.  His previous high after transferring to Black Hills this year was 22 points during the 87-83 win at New Mexico Highlands last Friday night.

Reed said CSC tried to guard Whitely "straight up" but it didn't work out.

Oliver, a 6-3 senior, was eight of 13 from the field, including three of five on threes, and five of six at the line to go with a game-high seven rebounds. 

Scott, a 6-7 freshman and the Jackets' top scorer with a 17.3-point average entering the game, was six of eight from the field, made his only trey, and also was five of six on charity shots.

Black Hills finished 15 of 20 at the line.  Chadron State was eight of 12.

The Eagles made nine of their first 15 shots from the field while staying even with Black Hills the first 11 minutes, but were just one of 11 the remainder of the first half.  They found their shooting touch again in the second half when they were 17 of 27 for 63 percent, but never got closer than 13 points.

Senior Brian Rodriguez, the leading scorer for the season at 17.2 points a game, led the way for CSC again with 18, but the Eagles' highlight was provided by 6-6 sophomore Kayden Sund. He was six of eight from the field, including four of five from behind the arc, for 16 points.  Previously Sund had scored just five points while seeing action in 17 of the team's 19 games and had not connected on any of his 11 3-point attempts.

Jacob Jefferson added 11 points for the hosts.

The Eagles will be home again Saturday night to meet South Dakota Mines, which defeated Metro State 80-51 in Denver on Friday night.

Foxen scores 27 but 4th quarter drought halts Eagles from win over BHSU

CHADRON, Neb. -- January 30, 2020 -- After playing a bulk of their games on the road so far this season, the Chadron State College basketball teams will be playing lots more games in their Chicoine Center, one of the classiest courts in NCAA Division II, beginning this weekend.

Their neighbors from the north will be the first to invade.  Black Hills State will be the opponents Friday night and South Dakota School of Mines on Saturday night.  Both Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference double-headers will tip off at 5:30 with the women's games.

All four games can be heard on Double Q Country, 97.5 FM, 105.9 FM and <a href="https://panhandlepost.com/csc-sports">streamed live</a>.

The Chadron State men have played 19 games, only five of them at home.  The women have played 22 contests, seven of them in Chadron.  During the remainder of the season, both quintets will have seven of their nine games in Chicoine.

Hopefully, the home games will net more victories.  The CSC women are 5-17 for the season and the men are 3-16. However, an array of outstanding players and teams will be making the visits and nothing is expected to come easy for the Eagles, even when the games are at home.

As traveling partners, Black Hills State and Mines played one other in their first RMAC clashes of the season on Nov. 26. The homestanding Yellow Jackets won both contests.   

The four South Dakota teams then visited Utah the first weekend of December to take on Dixie State and Westminster.  The Mines women edged Dixie State 70-68 in overtime, but the home teams won the remaining three.

Since then the Black Hills State men have won all 11 of their games, including five by four or fewer points. They are 14-5 overall and 11-2 in the RMAC to share the top spot with Dixie State.

The Yellow Jackets' leading scorer is 6-foot-7 freshman Joel Scott, who is averaging 17.3 points while shooting 62.4 percent from the field that includes going 22 of 43 from 3-point range.  Somehow, Coach Ryan Thompson sneaked him out of Colorado Springs even though he was the Class 4A Player of the Year after leading Lewis-Palmer High to the state championship a year ago.  

Scott tallied 35 points last Saturday night when the Yellow Jackets thumped CSU-Pueblo 94-76 in Pueblo.  

Black Hills has plenty of other punch. Junior guard Trey Whitley is averaging 13.7 points, senior Tyler Oliver is at 13.5 a game to go with 33 steals and 77 assists, while 6-6 Stefan Desnica averages 12.2 points.

The Black Hills women are 11-7 for the season and 8-5 in the RMAC to share sixth place. Their leader is 5-9 junior Racquel Wientjes, who is averaging 17.3 points and 5.3 rebounds, has scored as many as 35 points in a game this winter and tallied 28 Saturday night during a 69-63 setback at Pueblo. 

Morgan Ham, a 6-1 forward, is the Lady Jackets' only other regular double-figure scorer with a 14.2 average.

The South Dakota Mines women are 8-9 for the season and 6-7 in the conference, putting them ninth in the standings. Their top gun is 5-9 sophomore Ryan Weiss, who is shooting 47.5 percent from the field, including 48 percent (61-127) from 3-point land. She's also made 43 of 49 free throws and was the RMAC's Offensive Player of the Week after she scored 57 points during blowout wins over Pueblo and Highlands last weekend.

Another Lady Rockers' stalwart is 5-11 senior Anna Haugen, who is averaging 10.4 points and 9.4 rebounds.  The latter ranks second in the conference.

The Mines men are in about the same position as the women in the playoff picture.  After losing at both Pueblo and Highlands last weekend, they are 9-10 overall and 6-7 in the RMAC.  The previous weekend they toppled Colorado Mines 84-69 and Colorado Springs 71-49 at home.

Coached by CSC graduate Eric Glenn, the Hardrockers feature 5-11 senior guard Allec Williams, who is averaging 14.1 points and was named the RMAC Offensive Player of the Week after tallying 48 points in the wins two weeks ago over Colorado Mines and Colorado Springs.

The Hardrockers have good height, including 6-9 sophomore Mitch Sueker, who scored 32 points in the first game versus the Eagles last year. He's averaging 13.2 points this season.  Senior Logan Elers, who is 6-7, is chipping in 10.4 points and 5.5 rebounds a game.

While the Chadron State teams have struggled, they've also had numerous bright spots.

The men' team is second in the RMAC in 3-pointers made with 171 and is third in free throw shooting at 76.2 percent.  Forward Brian Rodriguez is fifth in the conference in scoring at 17.2 points a game, third in 3-point shooting at 43.3 percent and second in offensive rebounding.  In addition, point guard Colby Jackson is second in assists per game with 5.5 and fourth in assist/turnovers ratio.

On the women's side, junior Taryn Foxen has averaged 20 points in the last nine games and sophomore Jori Peters is fifth with 4.1 assists per game and has made 33 of 38 free throws.

CHADRON, Neb. – January 30, 2020 –&nbsp;Chadron State College Head Football Coach&nbsp;Jay Long&nbsp;announced on Thursday the addition of former Eagles wide receiver&nbsp;Micah Smith&nbsp;to the football coaching staff as the offensive coordinator, beginning immediately.

"I'm very excited to announce the hire of Micah as our next offensive coordinator," said Long. He was born an Eagle, and after his interview, I knew that he was qualified and ready to come back home. We can't wait to get Micah, Jadrianne, and Joslyn here."

Since hanging up his cleats at Chadron State in 2007, Smith has strung together 11 consecutive years of coaching at NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, Nebraska State College System, and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference institutions.

Smith last coached at NAIA Mayville State University in fall of 2019. As the MSU offensive coordinator, Smith tutored the North Star Athletic Association's leader for total offense per game. He also increased the team's scoring output by nearly 25 percent in his only season there.

Recently, Smith received the title of interim head coach at Mayville for the past several weeks, after the departure of the head coach, who was former CSC defensive coordinator Jeff Larson.

Prior to Mayville, Smith spent five seasons at Division I FCS Eastern Illinois University, first as tight ends coach but later as co-special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach. The Panthers were 24-16 in the Ohio Valley Conference during those years, earning an FCS playoff berth in 2015. In addition, Smith mentored four all-conference and one All-America selection during that term.

Stints as position coach at Division III Wabash College and CSC's conference rival Fort Lewis preceded the Eastern Illinois job. At FLC, Smith coached one season under coaching legend John L. Smith.

Smith's first college coaching job was at Wayne State College in Nebraska. There, as a graduate assistant with wide receivers responsibilities, he oversaw the rise to All-America status of both Frederick Bruno, as well as former CSC offensive coordinator&nbsp;Logan Masters, in 2009.

Following his graduation from CSC, he coached the 2008 season at Chadron High, where he helped lead the Cardinals to the the state semifinals. There he worked with none other than senior quarterback&nbsp;Jonn McLain, who was named All-State First Team Captain following the season. McLain went on to an illustrious career with CSC, beginning the following year.

"I'd like to thank CSC President&nbsp;Dr. Randy Rhine, Athletic Director Joel Smith, and Coach Long for allowing me this opportunity," said Smith. "Words can't describe how excited I am to come home. This college, community, and football program have been so good to me. This is my opportunity to try to repay the debt that I owe. Raising my family in a place that is nothing but supportive is a chance that I couldn't pass up."

"There were four characteristics that we were looking for in our next coordinator," added Long. Those were commitment to Eagles football, a similar offensive philosophy to our current one, an understanding about recruiting top student-athletes to Chadron, and an appreciation for what it takes to be successful here. Micah has gained valuable experience at all levels of NCAA football, coaching just about every offensive position, and serving as interim head coach. He'll add a tremendous amount of coaching knowledge to our program."

Smith is the youngest of three children of longtime CSC head football coach Brad Smith, a CSC Hall of Famer, Class of 2010, and the winningest coach in Chadron State history. Brad was named to the RMAC All-Centennial Team as head coach in 2009, the RMAC Hall of Fame in 2011, and the Nebraska Football Coaches Hall of Fame, just last year.

Micah Smith&nbsp;received his master's degree from Wayne State and his bachelor's from Chadron State, where he earned a place as the punt returner on the school's All-Century team, helping the Eagles to two conference titles and two playoff berths. &nbsp;He and his wife, Jadrianne have one daughter, Joslyn.

CHADRON, Neb. – January 30, 2020 –&nbsp;Chadron State College Head Football Coach&nbsp;Jay Long&nbsp;announced on Thursday the addition of former Eagles wide receiver&nbsp;Micah Smith&nbsp;to the football coaching staff as the offensive coordinator, beginning immediately."I'm very excited to announce the hire of Micah as our next offensive coordinator," said Long. He was born an Eagle, and after his interview, I knew that he was qualified and ready to come back home. We can't wait to get Micah, Jadrianne, and Joslyn here."Since hanging up his cleats at Chadron State in 2007, Smith has strung together 11 consecutive years of coaching at NCAA Divisions I, II and III, NAIA, Nebraska State College System, and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference institutions.Smith last coached at NAIA Mayville State University in fall of 2019. As the MSU offensive coordinator, Smith tutored the North Star Athletic Association's leader for total offense per game. He also increased the team's scoring output by nearly 25 percent in his only season there.Recently, Smith received the title of interim head coach at Mayville for the past several weeks, after the departure of the head coach, who was former CSC defensive coordinator Jeff Larson.Prior to Mayville, Smith spent five seasons at Division I FCS Eastern Illinois University, first as tight ends coach but later as co-special teams coordinator and wide receivers coach. The Panthers were 24-16 in the Ohio Valley Conference during those years, earning an FCS playoff berth in 2015. In addition, Smith mentored four all-conference and one All-America selection during that term.Stints as position coach at Division III Wabash College and CSC's conference rival Fort Lewis preceded the Eastern Illinois job. At FLC, Smith coached one season under coaching legend John L. Smith.Smith's first college coaching job was at Wayne State College in Nebraska. The 20-year NFL coaching veteran was the New York Giants' quarterbacks coach the past two years under former Giants head coach Pat Shurmur. Los Angeles County coroner's officials have identified the bodies of Kobe Bryant and three other people killed when their helicopter smashed into a foggy hillside near Los Angeles. The coroner's office says fingerprints were used to confirm the identities of Bryant and three others. Six other victims - including Bryant's 13-year-old daughter - haven't been officially confirmed but friends, family and acquaintances have ID'd them. The last of the bodies and the wreckage were removed on Tuesday. Federal investigators will pore over the wreckage in an effort to determine why the helicopter plunged about 1,000 feet in about a minute on Sunday.&nbsp;

Michigan ends losing streak with 79-68 win over Nebraska

Reigning national champion LSU is bringing back Bo Pelini as defensive coordinator. It's a position Pelini held when the Tigers won a national championship in the 2007 season.&nbsp; In 2008 he became head coach at Nebraska until 2014.

Pelini's hiring was announced by coach Ed Orgeron on Monday, when Youngstown State announced that Pelini would be leaving as its head coach. 

Pelini fills the vacancy that opened when Dave Aranda left the Tigers to take over as Baylor's head coach after LSU's national championship victory over Clemson. LSU's defense ranked third nationally the three years it was overseen by Pelini from 2005 to 2007.

GOLDEN, Colo. -- January 25, 2020 -- Colorado Mines sank all 10 of its final field goal shots, half of them 3-pointers, and made all seven of its final free throws Saturday night while coming from behind to defeat Chadron State 95-87 in a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference game in Golden.

Chadron State led the entire first half, including 46-33 at halftime and had its biggest lead at 62-46 with 13 minutes remaining.  But the Orediggers would not be denied.

Mines tied the score at 73-73 with 4:44 to play and outscored the Eagles 22-14 the rest of the way.

Junior Kobi Betts and sophomore Brendan Sullivan fired the Orediggers' stretch run by tallying 14 and 13 points, respectively, in the final 6:43 when every shot the hosts took started dropping through the nets.

Both Betts and Sullivan finished with 28 points. Sophomore Ben Boone added 23 points and junior Michael Glenn contributed 14.  Freshman Paul O'Leary scored the remaining two points for Mines, now 13-7 overall and 9-4 in the conference, good for third place.

Betts was 11 of 15 from the field, including four of seven from behind the arc; Sullivan made 10 of his 19 field goal shots, including three of six treys; and Boone was eight of 11 overall while making five of eight from long range. 

Both teams shot 50.7 percent from the field.  Mines was 35 of 69, including 14 of 32 on threes.  Chadron State was 34 of 67, while sinking 10 of 19 from afar.  

The Orediggers were 11 of 12 at the free throw line, where the Eagles were nine of nine.  CSC grabbed a narrow 35-33 rebounding edge and had only nine turnovers, but Mines had just four.

Center Jacob Jefferson led the Eagles in scoring with 24 points, making 10 of 14 shots, including his only three, and all three charity shots. Point guard Colby Jackson added 14 points and handed out eight assists. Brian Rodriguez scored 13 points and was the game's leading rebounder with nine.  Brady Delimont contributed 11 points.  Both Jackson and Delimont were four of six overall from the field, including three of four from behind the arc.

Chadron State Coach Houston Reed was naturally disappointed with the outcome, but commended Mines for making so many "big-time shots" as the clock was winding down.   

"We weren't as aggressive down the stretch as we needed to be, but we showed again that we can and do play good basketball." Reed said.

The Eagles are now 3-16 overall and 2-12 in the conference.  They have played just five of their 19 games at home, but seven of their final nine will be in the Chicoine Center.  The home games begin this weekend, when Black Hills State and South Dakota Mines will visit.

CSM was led in scoring by Liz Holter, who dropped 11 of her 13 shots from the floor into the net, including three of four from three-point range, to finish with 26 points. Three other Orediggers - Denali Pinto, Ashley Steffeck, and Courtney Stanton - all finished in double figures.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Taryn Foxen scored a season high 33 points and the Chadron State Eagles outscored UCCS in the second half, helping them earn a 78-74 victory on Friday night.

Two more Eagles combined for 24. Jori Peters finished with 14 points and McKenna McLintic added 10. Jordan Morris had a game high 11 rebounds.

The Eagles made 26 of 70 (37.1 percent) field goal shots, including 7 of 16 three-pointers.

UCCS was 33-of-84 for 39.3 percent from the field and six of 25 from behind the arc.  The Eagles helped themselves win the game by making 19 of 22 free throws, compared to the hosts two of 11.

The Eagles outrebounded their opponents 52 to 50. CSC had 15 turnovers in the victory, compared to the Mountain Lions 11.

UCCS opened the game with a 17-2 scoring run, but Chadron State responded by scoring 23 of the next 31 points, making the score tied at 25 entering the second quarter.

The teams stayed even in the second period, with the largest lead being three. A Foxen jumper with ten seconds in the quarter lowered the Eagle halftime deficit to 3.

In the second half, CSC outscored their opponent by two in the third quarter and three in the final period. The Eagles were 12 of 14 in the half from the charity stripe and Foxen scored 19 of her 33 points in the final two periods.

UCCS had four double-figure scorers. Abby Feickert had 21, Madi Gailber with 16 and Caley Barnard and Ellie Moore had 11 and 10, respectively.  

Besides leading the Eagles in scoring, Feickert had seven rebounds.

The Eagles, now 5-16 overall and 3-9 in the RMAC, will play Colorado School of Mines on Saturday night. The Orediggers nipped MSU-Denver, who are now 11-6, 73-65 in Denver on Friday night.

CHADRON, Neb. --January 24, 2020 -- Taking advantage of the absence of two of Chadron State College's best defenders, the Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions frequently pounded the ball inside to outscore the Eagles 44-22 in the paint during an 89-79 victory on their home court Friday night.

The Eagles were without 6-6 forward Walker Andrew, who sustained a season-ending shoulder injury last weekend, and 6-5 guard Dom Coleman, who severely sprained an ankle in practice this week.

"They did a good job of getting the ball inside against us tonight," CSC Coach Houston Reed noted. "We're already small in places and they (the Mountain Lions) were able to shoot over us more than usual.  We started kind of slow, but we made a game of it.  There's no quit in our team."

The Mountain Lions, now 11-6 overall and 7-5 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, led by as many as 12 points twice in the opening half before the Eagles cut the difference to 47-42 at halftime.

With senior forward Brian Rodriguez tallying nine of the points, the Eagles went on a 13-2 run in a four-minute span in the second half to go ahead 63-58 with 12 minutes left.  But the Mountain Lions answered with an 11-0 spurt to regain the lead, one they never relinquished.

Blend Avdili scored 21 points and Padiet Wang tallied 19 to lead the hosts, who made 32 of 63 field goal shots and out-rebounded Chadron State 37-30.

Rodriguez paced the Eagles with 19 points, nine of them free throws.  Colby Jackson and Micheal Sparks each scored 12 points and Brady Delimont contributed 11.  CSC was 24 of 58 (41.4%) from the field.   

The Eagles, now 3-15 overall and 2-10 in the conference, will visit Colorado School of Mines in Golden on Saturday night.  The Orediggers defeated Metro State Denver 61-52 Friday night.

Jori Peters finished with 14 points and McKenna McLintic added 10. Jordan Morris had a game high 11 rebounds.The Eagles made 26 of 70 (37.1 percent) field goal shots, including 7 of 16 three-pointers.UCCS was 33-of-84 for 39.3 percent from the field and six of 25 from behind the arc. The Eagles helped themselves win the game by making 19 of 22 free throws, compared to the hosts two of 11.The Eagles outrebounded their opponents 52 to 50. CSC had 15 turnovers in the victory, compared to the Mountain Lions 11.UCCS opened the game with a 17-2 scoring run, but Chadron State responded by scoring 23 of the next 31 points, making the score tied at 25 entering the second quarter.<figure>

"We're already small in places and they (the Mountain Lions) were able to shoot over us more than usual. We started kind of slow, but we made a game of it. BROOKFIELD, Ill. -- January 21, 2020 -- Five Chadron State College football players received All-Region recognition from the Don Hansen Football Committee on Tuesday, for Super Region Four, comprised of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, Lone Star Conference, Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

The duo of junior quarterback Dalton Holst (Gillette, Wyo.) and senior wide receiver Tevon Wright (Miami, Fla.) made the Second Team after both broke single-season school records at their respective positions. Holst set new CSC records with his 3,119 passing yards and 33 touchdowns, while Wright's 16 receiving touchdowns are a new school mark as well.

On the Third Team Offense, sophomore running back Elijah Myles (Hawthorne, Calif.) was joined by junior offensive lineman Justin Calderon (Levitttown, N.Y.) and senior blocker Jared Maciejczak (Box Elder, S.D.). Together with the rest of the offensive line, the trio produced more than 100 rushing yards per game at a clip of 5.4 per carry. Myles' per-game average was No. 17 in NCAA Division II. In addition, the Eagles' O-line blocked for the No. 21 total offense and No. 22 scoring offense in the nation.

Holst and Wright will be advanced to a national ballot from which the All-America teams will be selected.

The Hansen committee named Zimari Manning of Tarleton State its Offensive Player of the Year for Super Region 4, and Chris Garrett of Concordia-St. Paul as its Defensive Player of the Year. The Special Teams Player of the Year was Justin White of Colorado Mesa, and Freshman of the Year went to John Matocha of Colorado School of Mines. The committee picked Todd Hoffner of Minnesota State as its Coach of the Year.

🏉 Five Eagles named All-Region

CHADRON, Neb. -- January 21, 2020 -- Eleven transfers joined the Chadron State College football program at the start of the second semester, the coaches report. They came from nine different colleges and universities, are already participating in the weight lifting and conditioning program and will take part in spring practice.

Ten of them are expected to play defense for the Eagles and the other is a punter.

"We addressed our needs," said Head Coach Jay Long. "I commend our coaches for making the contacts and convincing these men to join our program.  Craig Jersild, in particular, made trips to meet some of them."

Two of the newcomers are from California junior colleges after playing on state championship teams in high school. 

They include Turner Tonkovich, who was an all-league player at San Clemente High when it won the state title and participated in 33 tackles this past season while playing linebacker on a 9-2 team at Saddleback College at Mission Viejo.  He is 6-foot-1, 228 pounds and has two years of eligibility remaining.

The other is Keenan Fyles, who was on the state championship team at Lawndale High near Carson, Calif., in the fall of 2018, and was a starter at Reedley College this past season.  He was the team's fourth leading tackler with 49, including 36 that were unassisted. He's 6-0, 200, is expected to play safety for the Eagles. He has three years of eligibility remaining.

Three of the transfers are coming from Minnesota four-year schools that dropped football at the end of the past season.  

Two are from St. Cloud State. One is Jeremiah Makahununiu, a graduate of Tea High in the Sioux Falls area.  Listed at 6-1, 205, he played in every game at St. Cloud the past two years, taking part in 46 tackles, including 19 solos, forcing a fumble and breaking up two passes. 

The other St. Cloud transfer is Garrett Wilson, a 6-2, 200-pound defensive back from Mequon, Wis., in the Milwaukee area.  He graduated from high school in 2019 and redshirted at St. Cloud this past season. He was first-team all-conference at Homestead High and was selected to play in the Wisconsin Coaches Association All-Star Game last summer.

Minnesota-Crookston also has discontinued football and as a result Reece Walno, a 6-2, 260-pound defensive lineman originally from Spearfish, S.D., is joining the Eagles after playing at Crookston the past two years. 

Kaleb Taylor is another big lineman joining the Eagles. He's 6-3, 265 and has played baseball at McCook Community College, but has decided he'd prefer playing football.  He was the second leading tackler for the McCook Bison as a high school senior in the fall of 2017 with 81 stops.

Chadron State also has added two defensive backs who were members of Division I teams last fall. 

Skyler Finley, 6-1, 190, participated in 59 tackles, forced two fumbles and recovered three while playing at Santa Ana College in his native California before being on the roster at Morehead State in Kentucky.

Austin Wood was both a receiver who caught 47 passes for 601 yards and six TDs and a defensive back who had four interceptions at Grassfield High School at Chesapeake, Va., his senior year. Before moving to CSC, Wood was on the team at Old Dominion at Norfolk, Va. He is 6-3, 200.

Two of the other newcomers redshirted as freshmen at Wayne State this past season.  They are Blake Booth of Genoa and Colton Munger of Springview.  Munger was an all-around athlete at North Central.  He placed in the high hurdles at the State Track Meet last spring and played in the state's Eight-Man All-Star Game last summer.

Another transfer is Parker Dillan, a graduate of Chase County High at Imperial who punted part-time at South Dakota Mines as a freshman last fall.

CSC football adds transfers at second semester

Wisconsin used a record-breaking performance from beyond the 3-point line to pull away for an 82-68 win over the visiting Nebraska men's basketball team Tuesday night at the Kohl Center.

The Badgers were 18-of-34 from the 3-point line, shooting 53 percent from beyond the arc. The 18 3-pointers were a Wisconsin record and were also the most 3-pointers Nebraska has ever allowed. Wisconsin, which entered the game averaging only six 3-pointers per game in Big Ten play, hit 10 threes in the second half alone, to break open what was a one-point game at the half.

Eight different Badgers knocked down a 3-pointer, as Wisconsin's 18 threes were 10 more than they had made in any previous Big Ten game this season. Brad Davison hit four 3-pointers to pace the Badgers with 14 points, while Brevin Pritzl also knocked down four threes for all 12 of his points. D'Mitrik Trice had a trio of 3-pointers to add 11 points, while Nate Reuvers also scored 11. Wisconsin improved to 12-7 with the win and moved to 5-3 in Big Ten play.

Wisconsin's record-breaking night spoiled a solid offensive outing for Nebraska, as the Huskers placed four players in double figures. Despite missing 10 of its last 11 shots, NU shot 43.3 percent from the field, including better than 55 percent in the first half. Dachon Burke Jr. led all scorers with 20 points, his third 20-point effort this season and 13th of his career. Burke hit 10-of-14 shots and grabbed a season-high eight rebounds.

Kevin Cross added 17 points for Nebraska – including 10 in the second half – to post the highest-scoring Big Ten game of his career. Cam Mack finished in double figures for the 12th straight game, scoring 14 points and adding seven rebounds and six assists. Thorir Thorbjarnarson rounded out the Husker quartet in double figures with 12 points, while Yvan Ouderaogo added eight rebounds for the Big Red.
