The second-year player from Brighton, Colorado, hit what was probably the longest home run of the season for the Eagles, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, to break open a tie game in the final contest of the four-game series. It put a silver lining on a trying season for the Eagles, who lost their top two pitchers and a veteran first baseman to finish 13-27 (13-23 RMAC) and ranked 9th&nbsp;of 12 in the league. "There wasn't a question in my mind," said CSC Head Softball Coach&nbsp;Kaley Ness, "as soon as she made contact with the ball, that it was going way over fence. It was really exciting to see. Mackenzi is capable of so much power, so it was really nice to see her end the season that way." Both teams hit safely in game three of the series, in the morning, and no player on either team had more than one base hit in the game. Kroll launches walk-off homer to finish CSC softball season with thrilling victory

With graduation just days away,&nbsp; two Alliance High School Seniors are already&nbsp; making plans for next year. Diana Kollars and Alec Garcia signed letters of intent on Thursday to attend Hastings College and compete on the track and cross country teams. Both Diana and Alec are 4 year letter winners for the Bulldogs&nbsp; and have been consistant placers in meets this season.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Diana has competed in the open 200 and&nbsp; 400 meter runs , and the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400 relays.&nbsp; She plans to concentrate&nbsp; on the middle distances and relay events in college. She is the daughter of Renee and Tim Kollars of Alliance.&nbsp;

Alec has competed in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs and the 4 x 800 relay. He is also a 4 year letter winner on the Bulldog cross country team. Alec will run the long distance events and also compete on the Hastings cross country team.&nbsp; Alec is the son of Amber Jacobs and Abe Garcia of Alliance.&nbsp;

The Alliance Track and Field teams will compete in the Bayard B-C-D meet on May 7.&nbsp; The B-6 District Meet is set for May 13 in Ogallala.&nbsp; The Class B State Track and Field Championships will be May 21-22 at Burke Stadium in Omaha.

DENVER (AP) — Jon Gray tossed six strong innings and helped himself with an RBI single, and the Colorado Rockies held off the San Francisco Giants for a 6-5 win. Gray allowed two runs and four hits. The right-hander also struck out eight and walked two while improving to 4-0 in five home starts. Daniel Bard worked a shaky ninth for his third save in five opportunities. The Giants scored an unearned run on catcher Dom Nuñez’s throwing error, but Darin Ruf bounced to shortstop with a runner on third for the final out.

Belt had seven RBIs in the doubleheader, shortened to seven-inning games under pandemic rules.

The game will kick off a home slate that includes two September home games, three October games at Memorial Stadium and two November home contests. Nebraska opens its 2021 schedule with a Week Zero Big Ten West contest at Illinois before returning home for its next two games. "We have been actively exploring opportunities to play a home game on Sept. 4 since our Ireland trip to play Illinois was canceled," Nebraska Athletic Director&nbsp;<a href="https://huskers.com/staff.aspx?staff=521">Bill Moos</a>&nbsp;said. "It was important for several reasons to add a September home game. It provides a better flow to the start of our season for our team, and gives us a valuable early-season showcase for recruits. &nbsp; CHADRON, Neb. -- April 28, 2021 --&nbsp;Chadron State College junior pitcher&nbsp;Gabby Russell&nbsp;allowed just five hits in 12.0 innings of softball on Wednesday, allowing no earned runs and recording two pitching wins in the delayed conclusion of a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference home series against Black Hills State University.&nbsp; Russell earned a seven inning, complete-game shutout in game three of the series, which went 3-0 to the Eagles, before a 10-inning thriller turned CSC's way on a walkoff RBI single by sophomore shortstop&nbsp;<a href="https://chadroneagles.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=4550">Bailey Marvel</a>, to give the home team a 5-4 victory and a series sweep. The doubleheader was postponed from April 17, due to inclement weather, and&nbsp;RMAC legislation this season allowed the teams to play two games on the 18th and two more&nbsp;on Wednesday. "It was definitely my best pitching performance," said Russell. "I just focused on one pitch at a time, adjusting to the umpires' strike zones, and trusting the defense behind me the whole time, knowing that if the batter hit a ball, I could trust them to get the out. I love seeing the celebrations we do once we field the ground ball and get the out." Three hits and a BHSU error scored two unearned runs for the Eagles in the second inning&nbsp; of game three. Freshman first baseman&nbsp;Jessie Henchenski&nbsp;singled on to lead off, and senior designated player&nbsp;Bailey Rominger&nbsp;batted her to third on another single. When Rominger stole second during the next at-bat, a throw from the catcher resulted in a blocked ball when it clicked off the helmet of freshman second baseman&nbsp;Addison Spears, the batter. That gave Rominger third and scored Henchenski, by rule. Later, Rominger crossed home plate on a base hit by Marvel. The third CSC run came on an RBI double by&nbsp;Mackenzi Kroll&nbsp;in the bottom of the sixth. In game four, the Eagles once again took the first lead in the second inning, on an RBI hit by Rominger. They matched their 3-0 lead from game three in the fourth. The Eagles loaded the bases with one out, following a single by senior left fielder&nbsp;Angelica Maples, a walk by Henchenski, and a fielder's choice play which turned into a muffed throw at third. The second run of the game scored on a subsequent walk by Spears, and the third came in on a single by Marvel. BHSU finally corrected things in the fifth inning. A two-run homer by freshman shortstop Bell Luebken, and a well-placed slap by junior pitcher Crystal Amaral both produced runs to tie the game at 3-3. Three and a half scoreless innings passed, going into extras, before each team put a run across in the ninth. In the Yellow Jackets' case, it was an unearned run with two outs, when Spears failed to convert a double play throwing a potential third out assist into the dirt. CSC strung together three base hits, and benefited from two more misplays by the BHSU defense, tying things at four apiece. A potential game-winning play at the plate was snuffed by a true throw from Black Hills' senior second baseman Bryce Henricksen. In the tenth, Henchenski walked, Rominger sacrifice bunted her to second, and Marvel batted her home. Another close play occurred at the plate on the game-winning score, as the BHSU center fielder launched a throw home in time to make a great play, but it bounced over the waiting glove of senior catcher Crystal Koch. "It was huge," said CSC Head Softball Coach&nbsp;Kaley Ness. "The beautiful thing about softball is that anyone can beat anyone on a given day, so going into today, we weren't guaranteed two wins. If our team plays our game to the best of our ability, there's not a team anywhere I wouldn't put us up against. Even though we were wavering a little bit today, we fought through it. We needed these two games in order to be in a position to make the playoffs." Russell (4-2) finished allowing only two walks and fanning four BHSU batters. Russell dazzles in pitching circle, Eagles sweep BHSU

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Drew Lock didn't have to wait around for the NFL draft to get the serious competition for his starting job that new general manager George Paton has been promising for months.

Paton traded a sixth-round pick in&nbsp;this weekend's draft&nbsp;to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for veteran QB Teddy Bridgewater on Wednesday.

“Acquiring Teddy Bridgewater adds competition, experience and a strong veteran presence to our quarterback room," Paton said. "He’s a talented player and leader who’s had success in this league in a number of different situations. Being familiar with Teddy from Minnesota, he’s going to compete and do everything he can to help us win.”

The Broncos own the ninth overall selection Thursday night and have had their eyes on several of the quarterback prospects rated a notch or two below Clemson's Trevor Lawrence and BYU's Zach Wilson, who are expected to go 1-2 to the Jaguars and Jets, respectively.

“We’re really high on Drew,” Paton said at his pre-draft news conference last week. "I like seeing Drew here every morning when I come in. He’s working hard and trending in the right direction. As you know, he has a lot of talent. I think he’s becoming a better pro, but we’re still going to look at the quarterback position. I’ve said since I’ve gotten here that we want to bring in competition. That’s the goal, and we plan on doing that.”

Bridgewater became available when the Panthers traded for former Jets QB&nbsp;Sam Darnold&nbsp;three weeks ago.

Bridgewater went 4-11 as the Panthers' starter last year and struggled to win close games down the stretch. He completed 69.1% of his passes, throwing 15 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions.

The third-year pro from Missouri tied for the league lead with 15 interceptions in 13 starts and his passer rating ranked 32nd in the NFL last season. He was 4-9 overall with 16 touchdown throws and is 8-10 in two years as Denver’s starter.

After missing most of his rookie season with a thumb injury on his throwing hand, Lock missed 2 1-2 games with a rotator cuff injury to his throwing shoulder and another for COVID-19 tracing in 2020.

Bridgewater has a 26-23 career record as a starter over his six seasons in Minnesota, New Orleans and Carolina.

The Broncos have struggled for years to find a suitable replacement for Peyton Manning, who retired a month after Denver's 24-10 win over Carolina in Super Bowl 50 and is headed to the Pro Football Hall of Fame this summer.

Manning's induction in Canton, Ohio, further highlights the franchise's serpentine search for a competent successor.

Among the washouts were first-round bust Paxton Lynch, the worst pick in former GM John Elway's tenure, trade dud Joe Flacco, and free agent flop Case Keenum.

It was widely believed Bridgewater wouldn't become available until after the draft and maybe wouldn't join a new team until June. But, according to the NFL Network, the Panthers agreed to pay a portion of Bridgewater's salary in 2021.

Bridgewater's three-year, $63 million contract signed last year calls for him to make $10 million guaranteed and up to $7 million more in 2021.

The Panthers have the eighth overall pick in the draft and with Darnold in the fold can target other areas of need including offensive tackle, linebacker, tight end or cornerback.
