The Nebraska State Patrol continues investigating a Columbus Police Department officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday, August 2.

The female subject involved in the case has been identified as Lauree Jankowski, 33-years-old, of Columbus, NE. Preliminary investigation shows that at approximately 4:54 p.m. Saturday, Columbus police officers were conducting an investigation in the 3000 block of 13th&nbsp;Street when Jankowski attacked one of the officers with a knife.

Another officer then fired their service handgun, striking Jankowski. Officers rendered aid immediately, but Jankowski was pronounced deceased at the scene. The injured officer was treated at Columbus Community Hospital and was released later Saturday evening. The knife was recovered at the scene.

The Columbus Police Department requested NSP to investigate the incident. That investigation is ongoing. In accordance with Nebraska law, this will be a grand jury investigation.

DHHS/DWEE Issues Smoke Advisory for Eastern & Central Nebraska

ALLIANCE, NE – On August 1, 2025, the Alliance Fire Department was recognized by the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services for pediatric readiness to provide emergency care for children in Nebraska. The DHHS Emergency Medical Services for Children program recognizes prehospital providers across Nebraska for advocating for the unique needs of children, ensuring children in our state have timely access to essential medical care, and providing safety, injury and prevention initiatives.

In 2024, approximately 7.05 percent of emergency medical transports in Nebraska were pediatric patients, equaling 11,513 children. Many of these pediatric patients were treated and transported to rural and frontier emergency departments. Essential skills like airway management and IV placement by prehospital providers have a higher complication or failure rate in pediatric patients versus adult patients. Additionally, children have unique physiological, psychological and developmental needs that are especially relevant in emergencies.

“Alliance Fire Department is committed to ensuring we are equipped and trained to provide high-quality emergency care to children when it matters most,” said Troy Shoemaker, Alliance Fire Chief. “Prioritizing readiness reduces anxiety and turns uncertainty into effective care.”

Alliance Fire Department Receives State Recognition for Pediatric Readiness

Lexington, NE&nbsp; — The Nebraska State Patrol is investigating multiple crashes that left several people injured and closed parts of I-80 for several hours Thursday.

The initial crash occurred just before 1 p.m. Thursday near mile marker 244 on I-80 westbound. A passenger vehicle suffered a blown-out tire and lost control. A semi hauling cattle attempted to avoid the other vehicle and overturned. Neither driver was injured. There were 36 cattle in the trailer, and 21 survived the crash.

As the first crash was nearing the end of clean-up at approximately 6:50 p.m., a second crash occurred approximately one mile east of the first crash. An NDOT arrow truck was parked on the shoulder of westbound I-80, directing traffic to move into the passing lane. A westbound semi then rear-ended the arrow truck.

The driver of the NDOT pickup suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He has been with NDOT for 14 years. The driver of the semi was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center with minor injuries.

The second crash required the closure of westbound I-80. At approximately 7:40 p.m., while additional troopers were directing westbound traffic off I-80 at the Overton interchange, at mile marker 248, a Chevrolet Sonic drove around the barricade and continued westbound. Near mile marker 246, the Chevrolet rear-ended traffic that was moving slowly because of the previous crash. The vehicle hit both a Dodge 1500 pickup and a semi-trailer.

The driver of the Chevrolet and two occupants from the Dodge were all transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet has been cited for DUI, possession of an open alcohol container, and driving on a closed roadway.

All three crashes remain under investigation. Westbound I-80 was closed for over four hours because of the second and third crashes. These responses involved numerous agencies, including NSP, NDOT, Lexington Fire Department, Overton Fire Department, AirCare, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, multiple towing companies, and the Overton Vet Clinic.

A westbound semi then rear-ended the arrow truck.The driver of the NDOT pickup suffered life-threatening injuries and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. He has been with NDOT for 14 years. The driver of the semi was transported to Lexington Regional Health Center with minor injuries.The second crash required the closure of westbound I-80. At approximately 7:40 p.m., while additional troopers were directing westbound traffic off I-80 at the Overton interchange, at mile marker 248, a Chevrolet Sonic drove around the barricade and continued westbound. Near mile marker 246, the Chevrolet rear-ended traffic that was moving slowly because of the previous crash. The vehicle hit both a Dodge 1500 pickup and a semi-trailer.The driver of the Chevrolet and two occupants from the Dodge were all transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Chevrolet has been cited for DUI, possession of an open alcohol container, and driving on a closed roadway.All three crashes remain under investigation. Westbound I-80 was closed for over four hours because of the second and third crashes. These responses involved numerous agencies, including NSP, NDOT, Lexington Fire Department, Overton Fire Department, AirCare, Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, multiple towing companies, and the Overton Vet Clinic.

Fischer and Cortez Masto&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fischer.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/news?ID=6DEB07A5-432F-4CCC-ACAF-5F73E5AAC253" target="_blank">originally created</a>&nbsp;the Broadband Funding Map as part of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. With oversight needed to ensure federal agencies are utilizing the Map to its full potential, the MAP For Broadway Funding Act will ensure that these agencies are reliably reporting their funding data to the FCC.

“I have worked diligently for years to close the digital divide for unserved and underserved communities. My work with Senator Cortez Masto was underscored by the Broadband Funding Map, which we created in 2021. While I’m pleased the FCC launched the Map in 2023, it is clear oversight is needed here to ensure all federal agencies are utilizing the Map to its full potential. I won’t relent in my efforts to expand Internet connectivity for those who lack access—this is a critical step in that mission,”&nbsp;Fischer said.

Fischer, Cortez Masto Introduce MAP for Broadband Funding Act

Roger Kuhn, assistant director of program development at the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, is retiring Oct. 1 after nearly 45 years with the agency.

Kuhn, a native of Louisville, NE, has been instrumental to the agency and the state parks system throughout his career. He built and maintained relationships with donors and corporate, community, political and philanthropic leaders across the state, ultimately raising tens of millions of dollars and securing support vital to the success of Game and Parks.

Kuhn is most well-known for his work to develop Eugene T. Mahoney State Park — the state’s newest state park — and for successfully leading the Commission’s largest private-public fundraising effort to date: the Nebraska Outdoor Venture Parks project.

Kuhn raised nearly $30 million in private donations for the Venture Parks project to expand activities and amenities in four popular state parks and recreation areas along the Platte River. The work at Mahoney State Park, Platte River State Park, Schramm Park State Recreation Area and Louisville State Recreation Area was completed in 2024.

Kuhn has worked as the agency’s primary fundraiser since 2014, developing strong relationships and unique partnerships across the state. He also has worked closely since 1983 with the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation on many targeted fundraising efforts.

“Roger’s authentic leadership and close work with the Foundation have resulted in many successes bringing new and improved outdoor recreational opportunities across Nebraska,” said Tim McCoy, Game and Parks’ director. “These outdoor spaces are places where our residents and visitors are creating memories today and will enjoy far into the future.”

Kuhn started working for the Commission’s Parks Division in 1981. Six years later, he developed the newly acquired property near Ashland into Mahoney State Park, where he served as park superintendent until 1993. During his time with the agency, Kuhn also served as administrative assistant to Director Eugene Mahoney and as the east regional parks manager, Parks Division Administrator and as Assistant Director.

For the past 43 years, Kuhn also has served as the coordinator of the Nebraska Game and Parks Foundation’s annual fundraising event, the Royal Game Dinner, and since 2014, as a commissioner for the Nebraska Tourism Commission, a position he was reappointed to this spring by Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen.

“I am blessed and proud to have had the opportunity to give back, serve and help do great things for my home state,” said Kuhn. “I am forever grateful and privileged to have worked throughout my career with literally thousands of amazing people who have made Nebraska a better place for all.”

Kuhn expressed deep gratitude to all his Game and Parks colleagues — from restroom cleaners and garbage collectors (of which Kuhn was when he started with the agency) to commissioners — as well as the philanthropic, corporate and political communities who generously supported the agency and contributed to its success.

HARRISON, NE - Agate Fossil Beds National Monument is planning to host artist Jeremy Red Eagle, August 5-6, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the monument visitor center, located at 301 River Road, Harrison Nebraska, 69346.

Jeremy Red Eagle is an enrolled member of the Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. He lives in the Enemy Swim District of the Lake Traverse Reservation. He also descends from the Nakoda (Assiniboine) people of Ft Belknap MT. His work for the past fifteen plus years has been working to learn and pass on the Dakota language and culture.

His primary focus today is revitalizing plains style bow and arrows accompanied with horseback archery. During his time at the park, Red Eagle will be researching the park museum collection and presenting techniques on crafting bows, arrows, and games used by Dakota, Lakota and other indigenous peoples across the Great Plains.

Central Park Fountain Repairs to Begin in Alliance

The first human cases of West Nile virus this season have been confirmed, with three cases identified in the Panhandle. This summer, 40 mosquito samples from the Panhandle have tested positive for West Nile Virus, indicating an increased risk of transmission to humans. Additionally, a sample from Scotts Bluff County recently tested positive for St. Louis Encephalitis virus. Health officials urge residents to take proper precautions to protect themselves and reduce the risk of infection.

“Prevention is the most effective defense against most mosquito transmitted diseases,” said Melissa Haas, Environmental Health Coordinator at PPHD. “By taking simple steps to avoid mosquito bites, people can significantly reduce their risk of infection.”

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. While many people infected with the virus may not experience symptoms, others may develop severe neurological illnesses, including encephalitis – a potentially life-threatening inflammation of the brain.

Similarly, St. Louis Encephalitis is also transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Symptoms are essentially the same as West Nile virus, with many again not knowing they have been infected. Severe cases of St. Louis Encephalitis can experience encephalitis and meningitis, which is a swelling of the spinal cord.

Tips to Prevent Mosquito Bites - Use EPA-registered insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or para-menthol-diol. Always follow the label instructions. -&nbsp;Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants when outdoors, especially at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active. - Install or repair window and door screens to keep mosquitoes out of homes. - Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes breed – including in flower pots, bird baths, pet dishes, old tires, and clogged gutters. - Use air conditioning or keep windows closed if screens are not available. - If you have found a dead bird on your property, you can report it online through Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services: https://epi- dhhs.ne.gov/redcap/surveys/?s=E78D8A3JK4343E4X.

West Nile Virus Reported and St. Louis Encephalitis in the Panhandle

The state of Nebraska is providing resources to assist in recovery operations at the Horizon Biofuels plant in Fremont. Three people, an adult and two children, have been missing since an explosion at the plant yesterday. A fire continues to burn at the structure.

Fourteen members of Nebraska Task Force One (NE-TF1) have been activated, including personnel with expertise in structural issues and a canine team. The group is also transporting equipment to the location that can be utilized should it become necessary.&nbsp; They will join other emergency response teams that remain on the scene, including multiple law enforcement and fire departments. Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol continue to provide traffic control around the area. Representatives from the state Fire Marshal’s office are there as well.

Activation of NE-TF1 was authorized by Adjutant General Craig Strong, director of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). Nebraska’s Emergency Management Act allows for the deployment of resources in response to emergencies and disasters.

Gov. Jim Pillen expressed his deep appreciation to the numerous agencies that have responded since yesterday.

“This is obviously a difficult situation for the community and those first responders who are working diligently at the scene,” said Gov. Pillen. “Suzanne and I continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of those who were in the plant at the time of this tragic incident.”&nbsp;&nbsp;

Carnegie Arts Center to Paint Crosswalks at Local School Intersections

Humanities Nebraska (HN) is bringing “Weaving a Nation” Nebraska Chautauqua to Gering and Scottsbluff next week. This Chautauqua is will offer many different opportunities to hear and experience the lesser-known stories of the founding of our nation. It is presented by HN with local partners including Legacy of the Plains Museum, Midwest Theater, Gering Public Library, Lied Scottsbluff Public Library, Gering Visitors Bureau, Scotts Bluff Area Visitors Bureau, Scotts Bluff County Fair, West Nebraska Arts Center, the City of Gering and the City of Scottsbluff.

“This Chautauqua will include stories that are rarely — or never — covered in school,” said HN Program Manager Kristi Hayek Carley. “Our nation’s history is so complex, with so many different people contributing in different ways. I think audiences will never look at the Continental Congress the same way after hearing Abigail Adams’ story or think of the Lewis &amp; Clark expedition the same way after getting the perspectives of Sacagawea and others who also went on that journey. Every event is going to be an eye-opener.”

“Weaving a Nation” is in commemoration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and our evolving vision of democracy. During a span of more than 40 years, the Nebraska Chautauqua has visited 41 different communities (many of them multiple times) and has explored 15 different themes. The last time the North Platte Valley hosted the Nebraska Chautauqua was in 2014.

Beginning earlier this summer, pre-Chautauqua events have been held in partnership with Katahdin Daughters of the American Revolution, Nebraska Daughters of the American Revolution, Nebraska Sons of the American Revolution, Gering Public Library Foundation, Lied Scottsbluff Public Library, Gering City Band, Scotts Bluff County Fair, the City of Scottsbluff and the City of Gering.

Humanities Nebraska is a private nonprofit with a mission to help people explore what connects us and makes us human. It is presented by HN with local partners including Legacy of the Plains Museum, Midwest Theater, Gering Public Library, Lied Scottsbluff Public Library, Gering Visitors Bureau, Scotts Bluff Area Visitors Bureau, Scotts Bluff County Fair, West Nebraska Arts Center, the City of Gering and the City of Scottsbluff.“This Chautauqua will include stories that are rarely — or never — covered in school,” said HN Program Manager Kristi Hayek Carley. “Our nation’s history is so complex, with so many different people contributing in different ways. I think audiences will never look at the Continental Congress the same way after hearing Abigail Adams’ story or think of the Lewis &amp; Clark expedition the same way after getting the perspectives of Sacagawea and others who also went on that journey.  </figure>“Weaving a Nation” is in commemoration of the upcoming 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and our evolving vision of democracy. During a span of more than 40 years, the Nebraska Chautauqua has visited 41 different communities (many of them multiple times) and has explored 15 different themes. The last time the North Platte Valley hosted the Nebraska Chautauqua was in 2014.Beginning earlier this summer, pre-Chautauqua events have been held in partnership with Katahdin Daughters of the American Revolution, Nebraska Daughters of the American Revolution, Nebraska Sons of the American Revolution, Gering Public Library Foundation, Lied Scottsbluff Public Library, Gering City Band, Scotts Bluff County Fair, the City of Scottsbluff and the City of Gering.Humanities Nebraska is a private nonprofit with a mission to help people explore what connects us and makes us human. HN is funded in part by the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), an appropriation from the Nebraska Legislature, private donations, and the Nebraska Cultural Endowment, a public-private partnership with state dollars matching private dollars to benefit the arts and humanities in Nebraska.
