SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb. – United Way of Western Nebraska is pleased to announce a new partnership with Food Bank for the Heartland expanding mobile food pantries in their service area. The first pantry in Scottsbluff County will be a&nbsp;drive-thru mobile food pantry&nbsp;on&nbsp;Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 4 p.m.&nbsp;at the&nbsp;Guadalupe Center, located at&nbsp;1200 East 9th Street in Scottsbluff.

This free event is open to the public and provides food for families in need, with&nbsp;one distribution per household. The Mobile Pantry Program delivers fresh and shelf-stable food directly to communities with a high need but limited food resources. These one-day, drive-through distributions are free to attend. Community packs include various shelf-stable items. Along with community packs, other items distributed can include assorted produce, bread, and dairy products.

A brief intake form will be completed for each household receiving food. If you are unable to attend, a&nbsp;proxy form&nbsp;is available to allow a family member or friend to pick up food on your behalf. Forms can be picked up in advance at:

Alliance Police Arrest Two, Cite Juvenile Following Burglary and Vehicle Break-In Investigation

The Alliance Police Department reports that two individuals were arrested and one juvenile cited following an 

early morning burglary and vehicle break-in investigation in Alliance.

On January 8, 2026, during the early morning hours, officers responded to a reported burglary at a residence in 

Alliance while the homeowners were present. Through the investigation, officers determined that Tobias Little 

Hoop unlawfully entered the residence and he was arrested on suspicion of burglary.

A juvenile was also present during the incident and was cited in connection with the investigation. Three 

additional individuals were present but were determined not to have actively participated in the burglary.

In addition, officers investigated several vehicle break-ins in the area that were connected to the same group of 

Officers determined that all five individuals were under the influence of alcohol. As a result, each individual was

either arrested or cited for Minor in Possession of Alcohol.

Bryce Ghost was one of the individuals who was arrested for Minor In Possession of Alcohol.

All arrests and citations are pending further court proceedings. This investigation remains ongoing.

At Greater Nebraska Medical and Surgical Services (GNMSS), a new walk-in clinic will now be available to the community! The walk-in clinic will be offering treatment for illnesses and injuries that need care quickly, but are not emergent enough to go to the Emergency Room. Patients can come directly to the GNMSS entrance located at 2091 Box Butte Avenue to check-in. No prior appointment is needed. Patients will need to bring a valid form of identification and their insurance cards at the time of check-in. The walk-in clinic will begin taking patients on Monday, January 19, 2026.

The walk-in clinic will provide evaluation and treatment for a wide range of conditions including:

The walk-in clinic will be open Monday through Friday from 8 AM – 4:30 PM. Patients will need to be checked in before 4:30 PM to be seen by a provider. In addition to walk- in services, GNMSS primary care providers offer limited, same-day appointments.

A Walk-In Clinic is Now Offering Convenient Care at Box Butte General Hospital

Western Nebraska — The Panhandle Childcare Expansion Project has been awarded $65,000 through the 6 Regions, One Nebraska (6R1N) Challenge Grant, supporting efforts to expand licensed childcare access and strengthen workforce stability across the Nebraska Panhandle.

The project will leverage the grant with local matching funds and statewide partnerships to support new and expanding family home childcare providers through training, mentorship, and financial incentives.

Over 30 months, the initiative aims to create 25 new or expanded licensed childcare programs and add 200–250 childcare slots for working families.

“This investment addresses one of the most critical barriers to workforce participation in our region,” said Owen Palm, Western Regional Co-Chair for 6 Regions, One Nebraska. “Quality childcare is essential to attracting and retaining workers, supporting families, and ensuring long-term economic growth in the Panhandle.”

The Panhandle Childcare Expansion Project is led by regional partners with fiscal support from Panhandle Partnership, Inc., and aligns with the 6R1N initiative’s focus on data-driven, collaborative solutions to regional challenges.

The bulk of the Newblom Estate was given to the foundation to support activities for the moral, mental, intellectual and physical development of young men and women in Box Butte and Dawes Counties, Nebraska; to provide scholarships in assisting students in obtaining an education; and to assist in the founding, equipping and maintaining of associations or institutions engaged in the advancement of learning. This year will be the thirty-fifth year during which grants and scholarships from this foundation have been given.

The 2026 mountain lion hunting season in Nebraska’s Niobrara Unit closed Jan. 6 when the harvest sublimit of three females was met.

The mountain lion season remains open in the Pine Ridge and Wildcat Hills units. The Pine Ridge has a harvest limit of 12 lions with a sublimit of six females. To date, two females have been harvested. The Wildcat Hills Units has a harvest limit of three lions with a sublimit of two females. To date, no lions have been harvested.

Season 1 in all three units began Jan. 2. If the harvest limit or female sublimit in the Pine Ridge or Wildcat Hills is not reached by the end of February, an auxiliary season that allows the use of dogs would take place March 14-31.

This is the state’s ninth mountain lion harvest season; the first was in 2014.

In accordance with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission’s management objectives, the harvest of mountain lions in the Niobrara Unit provides a harvest opportunity that allows the lion population to remain resilient and healthy, while keeping the population stable or slowing growth in the Niobrara Valley.

Mountain lion presence has been documented in the Niobrara River Valley of north-central Nebraska since 2001. There has been a resident reproducing population there since 2013 and information gathered through research suggests a population that is growing and will be resilient to harvest.

Mountain lion season ends in Niobrara Unit; open in Pine Ridge and Wildcat Hills

CHADRON – The Rangeland Management program at Chadron State College has a wide variety of students with diverse backgrounds, gathering from around the world to learn about the environment. Kai Isa, Gavin Molinar, and Patty Timmons all come from various places, yet they have united as classmates proving that CSC is a place of collaboration and community.

Rangeland Management’s program is designed for a wide assortment of interests, offering emphasis options in ecology, livestock management, wildlife management, fire management, equine management, agriculture science and agribusiness.

Isa, an international student from Nagaoka, Japan, came to CSC after attending community college in Kansas. Now a junior, her passion for nature and dream of working on a grassland farm with animals attracted her to the program.

Isa said she chose to attend CSC because of the access to nature and affordable tuition.

“I’ve been loving this college a lot, because of the beautiful hills and warm community. For me, having a lot of nature close to me has helped me mentally, giving me a peaceful vibe,” she said.

For Isa, the Rangeland Management professors have been the key to making professional connections.

“They are always providing information for internships related to rangeland and opportunities to get practical experience on actual fields,” she said.

Molinar of Johnstown, Colorado, graduated from high school in 2021 and went directly into the workforce as a construction worker and farmhand. Working 60 to 70 physically demanding hours a week became tiring for him, so he decided to follow his dream of becoming a firefighter.

Once joining the program, Molinar said that Chadron quickly became his home.

“Chadron being such a tight knit community is something that is very important to me,” he said. “I have developed a family of sorts, I have great connections with all my professors, as well as my peers. The town of Chadron has opened its arms to me and welcomed me in from day one.”

According to Molinar, the array of classes offered in the program helped him narrow his academic focus. While he originally joined with an interest in firefighting, the program allowed him to explore more specific topics, such as grassland wildfires.

Timmons, unlike the other two students, grew up immersed in the Midwestern ranching industry. From an early age, Timmons worked on her family’s ranch in White Owl, South Dakota, and secured her fascination in sustainable agriculture during her high school Future Farmers of America program.

“I immediately became interested in the topic and felt it was something I wanted to pursue as a career,” said Timmons, a freshman. “I hope to work for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) as a Rangeland Management Specialist in the future.”

Timmons felt an attraction to CSC because of the proximity to the Black Hills and unique opportunities such as the Rangeland Club. With the club, she travels to local and international Society for Range Management conferences, broadening her expertise.

For me, having a lot of nature close to me has helped me mentally, giving me a peaceful vibe,” she said.For Isa, the Rangeland Management professors have been the key to making professional connections.“They are always providing information for internships related to rangeland and opportunities to get practical experience on actual fields,” she said.Molinar of Johnstown, Colorado, graduated from high school in 2021 and went directly into the workforce as a construction worker and farmhand. Working 60 to 70 physically demanding hours a week became tiring for him, so he decided to follow his dream of becoming a firefighter.Once joining the program, Molinar said that Chadron quickly became his home.“Chadron being such a tight knit community is something that is very important to me,” he said. “I have developed a family of sorts, I have great connections with all my professors, as well as my peers. The town of Chadron has opened its arms to me and welcomed me in from day one.”According to Molinar, the array of classes offered in the program helped him narrow his academic focus. While he originally joined with an interest in firefighting, the program allowed him to explore more specific topics, such as grassland wildfires.Timmons, unlike the other two students, grew up immersed in the Midwestern ranching industry. From an early age, Timmons worked on her family’s ranch in White Owl, South Dakota, and secured her fascination in sustainable agriculture during her high school Future Farmers of America program.“I immediately became interested in the topic and felt it was something I wanted to pursue as a career,” said Timmons, a freshman. “I hope to work for the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) as a Rangeland Management Specialist in the future.”Timmons felt an attraction to CSC because of the proximity to the Black Hills and unique opportunities such as the Rangeland Club. With the club, she travels to local and international Society for Range Management conferences, broadening her expertise.

Immunization is the most effective way to protect against the measles and other vaccine-preventable diseases. Children should receive the first dose of the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine between 12 and 15 months of age, followed by a second dose between four and six years of age. DHHS recommends Platte County parents of infants aged 6 to 11 months consult their healthcare provider to discuss the option of early MMR vaccination.

The East Central District Health Department will be hosting vaccine clinics this week.

Enable allows qualified individuals — along with their parents, grandparents, spouses, and siblings — to set aside funds for disability-related needs without jeopardizing eligibility for essential public benefits. Enable accounts are a vital tool for long-term planning, providing a secure financial resource for individuals after their parents or guardians are no longer able to provide support.

“Enable brings financial dignity and independence to individuals with disabilities,” Treasurer Spellerberg said. “Shauna brings the right mix of experience and enthusiasm to help our office administer and promote the program so we can serve even more families across Nebraska.”

Paolini has extensive experience in Nebraska state government, having previously served at the Departments of Labor, Banking and Finance, and Health and Human Services. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business and a graduate degree in organizational performance from Bellevue University.

Treasurer Spellerberg reminds Nebraskans that Enable’s age eligibility guidelines have been expanded significantly for 2026. Following a change in federal law, Enable accounts are now available to individuals with a disability that began prior to age 46 — replacing the prior onset age limit of 26.

Additionally, for the 2026 calendar year, any resident — as well as businesses, trusts, and organizations — can contribute up to $20,000 annually to an Enable account. Contributions can be deducted on the contributor’s Nebraska income taxes, up to $10,000 (or $5,000 if married, filing separately).

In late December NDA in conjunction with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), confirmed a case of HPAI in a commercial flock in Butler County.&nbsp; Since November, HPAI cases have also been confirmed in small backyard flocks in Keith, Howard, Washington and Scotts Bluff counties.&nbsp;

“While these cases are not unexpected and coincides with the ongoing wild bird migration and what we are seeing in other states, it does serve as an important reminder for Nebraska poultry producers to stay vigilant in protecting their flocks,” said State Veterinarian Dr. Roger Dudley.&nbsp; “Producers should know and monitor for HPAI symptoms and follow strict biosecurity practices, which can significantly reduce the risk of the disease affecting their flocks.”

HPAI is a highly contagious virus that spreads easily among birds through nasal and eye secretions, as well as infected food, water, and manure. The virus can spread in various ways from flock to flock, including by wild birds during migratory season, through contact with infected poultry, by equipment, and on the clothing and shoes of caretakers. Wild birds can carry the virus without becoming sick, while domesticated birds can become very sick and die.

What are the clinical signs of HPAI in birds?

Symptoms of HPAI in poultry include: a decrease in water consumption; lack of energy and appetite; decreased egg production or soft-shelled, misshapen eggs; nasal discharge, coughing, sneezing; incoordination; and diarrhea. HPAI can also cause sudden death in birds even if they aren’t showing any other symptoms. HPAI can survive for weeks in contaminated environments.

“DHHS has investigators visiting high-risk locations to check for skimming devices,” said Shannon Grotrian, Director of the Office of Economic Assistance. “We’re also working with our EBT vendor, Fidelity Information Services, to shut down out-of-state locations where these fraudulent transactions are occurring.”

A skimmer is a device used by scammers to record actions taken on a card reader. Skimmers look similar to card readers but may be slightly larger, create a lip or edge around the device, or have thinner buttons. To check for a skimming device on a card reader, look for any unusual activity, including anything that may be loose, crooked, or damaged on the reader.

Other ways to prevent fraudulent activity on your EBT card include:

While respiratory illnesses can make anyone sick, certain people are at greater risk for serious complications:

Steps the Public Can Take to Protect Themselves and Others

“Simple prevention steps make a big difference,” said Jessica Davies, Panhandle Public Health District Director. “By staying home when sick, keeping up to date on vaccinations, and practicing good hygiene, we can help protect our families, coworkers, and our communities.

Davies added, “If you are ill, it is important to remain at home until you have been fever-free for at least 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications, and your symptoms have been improving for 24 hours.”

Seek medical care if your symptoms are continuing to worsen or if you are experiencing difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, chest pain, confusion, or symptoms that do not improve.

If you test positive for Influenza or Covid, you may be eligible to receive antiviral treatment such as Oseltamivir (Tamiflu) for the flu or Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir) for Covid. Contact your healthcare provider early, as treatment is most effective when started soon after symptoms begin.

Respiratory Illness Cases are on the Rise in the Panhandle

GRAND ISLAND, Neb.&nbsp; —&nbsp; The next class of Nebraska State Patrol recruits have started their journey to earning the title of Nebraska State Trooper. The recruits of Camp 73 began training today at the Nebraska State Patrol Training Academy in Grand Island.

“Today is a great day for Nebraska, as these recruits have committed themselves to a career of serving the people and visitors of our great state,” said Colonel Bryan Waugh, Superintendent of the Nebraska State Patrol. “They’ve already demonstrated they have the character necessary to serve with integrity. Our Training Academy troopers will now equip them with knowledge, skills and abilities they’ll need to make a difference in communities across Nebraska.”

NSP Recruits Start Journey to Become Nebraska Troopers

CHADRON, Neb. – Riley Ellis has been hired as a Publications Specialist at Chadron State College, where he will manage the Print Shop and provide graphic design for the college’s marketing and communications efforts. Ellis’ first day is Jan. 5, filling a position vacated by Dewayne Gimeson, who retired in early January.

Ellis earned a bachelor’s degree in graphic design from CSC in 2019. He said returning to campus in a professional role has been especially meaningful.

“Having the opportunity to return to my alma mater in a professional setting is exciting,” he said. “I’m grateful for the opportunity to contribute to a place that played such a big part in my education.”

Ellis has been a Marketing Specialist II and Graphic Artist at Western Nebraska Community College since Oct. 2021. In that role, he designed and produced a wide range of print and digital materials for college departments, recruitment efforts and community outreach. His work emphasizes brand consistency and storytelling, from brochures and viewbooks to posters and event materials, while overseeing projects from concept through final production.

“Graphic design has so many avenues, and I have found that design in higher ed is what speaks to me, because it’s designing with a purpose,” Ellis said. “The work I get to do has purpose in a way that it can help potential students, current students, and communities understand the mission of the school.”

A key part of Ellis’ role at CSC will include managing print production. He said the balance between design and print is essential to strong visual communication.

“The design and print sides of the job naturally complement each other because they are both hands-on, craft-driven processes,” Ellis said. “Understanding how something is printed, finished and handled informs better design decisions and results in stronger, more cohesive pieces.”

Before joining WNCC, Ellis worked as a graphic artist at Outlaw Printers, where he designed custom graphics for print materials, apparel and signage, and worked directly with clients. Earlier in his career, he gained experience as a student worker in CSC Athletics, designing game programs, posters, social media graphics and supporting game-day operations.

“Being a student in Chadron was awesome because I was part of a big school in a small town,” Ellis said. “My work study job in Athletics let me combine my love of sports with design, and gave me my first taste of having deadlines, handling multiple projects at one time and collaboration.”

Ellis said he is excited about collaborating with colleagues.

“I am looking forward to working with the people at the college and in the community to help bring ideas to life,” he said. “I’m excited to use my skillset in a purposeful way to help others and create some memorable things.”
