OMAHA, Neb. –&nbsp;Midwestern communities across the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Omaha Field Division safely disposed of 18,710 pounds of unneeded and expired medications, Oct. 25, at the 29th&nbsp;National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. Nationally, the DEA and its law enforcement partners removed 571,054 pounds of medication at 4,317 collection sites.

More than 125 law enforcement partners in Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, South Dakota and counties in western Illinois joined the DEA in hosting 132 Take Back Day locations.

“Thank you to everyone who took time out of their day to clean out medicine cabinets and drawers of unused and expired medications,” DEA Omaha Field Division Special Agent in Charge Dustin Gillespie said. “Each pill, patch and capsule that was dropped off at a Take Back location represents one less temptation for misuse or abuse. We’re grateful for your support and hope you will continue to dispose of unneeded medications at year-round collection sites near you.”

Since its inception in 2010, more than 20 million pounds of medication have been collected at DEA’s National Prescription Drug Take Back Day. The removal of these medications from homes nationwide helps prevent prescription drug misuse and reduces the potential for accidental overdoses and poisonings.&nbsp;

For those unable to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, there are nearly 16,500 pharmacies, hospitals and businesses, in addition to numerous police departments, that offer safe medication disposal year-round. Midwest Communities Safely Dispose of Nearly 19,000 Pounds of Unwanted Medications

The Nebraska State Fair has officially unveiled its 2026 theme:&nbsp;“It All Happens Here.”&nbsp;The theme celebrates the one-of-a-kind experiences, traditions, people, and moments that make the Fair a true showcase of Nebraska pride.

Event organizers say the theme celebrates funnel cakes for breakfast and blue-ribbon emotions, carnival selfies, national concerts under the stars and hands-on agricultural learning.

“The Fair is where youth show animals they’ve raised from infancy, where grandparents share stories of their time exhibiting, and where families can pack in tons of entertainment and experiences as they round out their summer bucket lists,” said Courtney Glock, Nebraska State Fair Marketing Director. “It All Happens Here really feels like an all-encompassing recognition of the moments, both big and small, that guests tell us they look forward to all year long.”

The 2026 Fair will continue its tradition of blending agriculture, education and entertainment into a jam-packed 11-day event.

Glock says the Fair has also joined the nationwide America 250 celebration, commemorating the 250th anniversary of the United States. She says the Fair will proudly incorporate expanded patriotic elements throughout the event, including enhanced red-white-and-blue décor, additional flag displays across the grounds, special historical and educational exhibits and an elevated Veterans Day celebration honoring those who have served.

“We’ve been working closely with other state fairs across the nation, as well as communicating with officials in Washington, D.C. to capitalize on this American celebration,” said Glock. “You’ll see our theme carry beyond Nebraska, to the larger national celebration and show that it really does all happens here… right in the center of the country… in Nebraska and at the Nebraska State Fair.”

The Nebraska State Fair will run&nbsp;August 28 – September 7, 2026, at Fonner Park in Grand Island.

More announcements, including concert lineups, special events, and promotional offers will be shared in the months ahead.

Nebraska State Fair Announces 2026 Theme: “It All Happens Here”

The 2026 Official Election Calendar for the State of Nebraska is now available on the Secretary of State’s website&nbsp;<a href="https://sos.nebraska.gov/elections" target="_blank">here</a>. The calendar sets out election dates and other significant election reminders regarding the 2026 election year.

Secretary of State’s Office publishes Nebraska’s 2026 Official Election Calendar

CHADRON, Neb. –&nbsp;Chadron State College Assistant Professor of Business Dr. Nic Fisher made a presentation at the Great Plains Economics and Business Conference in Omaha on Oct. 17 titled Unintended Side Effects: Regulatory Prescriptions.

In his abstract, Fisher stated that developing an economically viable region that incentivizes future generations to live and work in the Midwest requires not only strong employment opportunities but also access to quality housing that supports workforce attraction and retention.

“Across rural Nebraska, political leaders, employers, and educators consistently identify housing shortages as a major barrier to hiring and growth,” Fisher wrote in his abstract. “Yet, despite widespread recognition of the problem, new housing construction has failed to materialize.”

Fisher explored how legal prescriptions and regulation can create barriers to new home construction. During the past year, he examined how local platting and zoning requirements, amendments to Nebraska’s 2010 Building Construction Act mandating adoption of the International Residential Code, and federal provisions under the Dodd-Frank Act combine to constrain development in cities with populations between 2,000 and 9,999.

He said he used a mixed-methods approach including legal analysis, quantitative review of datasets from the U.S. Census, Department of Labor, Department of Housing, IRS, and the University of Nebraska Omaha Center for Public Affairs Research.

“This research identifies how overlapping regulations limit rural housing starts. The findings provide a foundation for policy reforms that address housing shortages, strengthening the ability of rural Nebraska communities to build a workforce that will remain rooted in the Midwest,” Fisher wrote in his abstract.

Fisher joined the CSC faculty in 2021 to teach Business Law and Ethics in the MBA program and contribute to the development of the Healthcare Management focus area. He has served as an advisor for the CSC chapter of Future Business Leaders of America and has been the director of the Nebraska Business Development Center for the North Panhandle Region since the summer of 2024. He is also a member of the Board of Trustees for the Chadron Community Hospital.

Panhandle police activity, Oct. 28 - Nov. 3

ALLIANCE, Neb. - Shortly after midnight, on Saturday, Nov. 1, an Alliance juvenile, currently on probation for a prior DUI, was involved in a crash on Potash Avenue where he struck a parked pickup truck before continuing to the intersection of 4th Street and Grand Avenue. The driver’s parents reported that their child was intoxicated. A DUI investigation conducted by Sergeant David LaDuke revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.215, more than twice the legal limit.

Despite causing a crash while intoxicated, the juvenile probation officer determined the offense did not meet their criteria for detention. Officers were therefore required to release the juvenile to the parents.

“Drinking and driving is a serious threat to public safety. It is extremely frustrating that Nebraska’s juvenile system does not allow officers to detain juvenile offenders even in cases of repeated violations that endanger the community. Situations like this underscore the urgent need for an overhaul of our juvenile justice system to protect the public and hold offenders accountable. Hopefully, this juvenile will be held accountable in court.”

The Alliance Police Department urges the community to drive responsibly and reminds the public that drinking and driving poses significant dangers to everyone on the road.

Juvenile DUI Crash Highlights Gaps in Nebraska’s Juvenile Justice System

CHADRON, Neb. — Dave Collins, sports director for Eagle Media in Chadron and the play-by-play voice of the Eagles, guided attendees at the Graves Lecture Tuesday, Oct. 28, through how Chadron State College athletic contests come to life through his broadcasts.

Collins grew up in Westminster, Colorado, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado. At Colorado, a play-by-play class he took with Denver sports announcer Larry Zimmer helped Collins visualize a realistic pathway to sports broadcasting.

“I realized it was not just a dream. I could actually do this,” he said. “I took additional courses and completed a six-month internship with KCNC TV in Denver.”

To practice, Collins would sit in the upper deck at Rockies’ games and record himself.

“I would sit there and broadcast a game like I was the voice of the Rockies to just practice and get reps and ultimately get tape,” he said.

The approach worked and he landed his first job in Sidney, Nebraska, in 2004. After a decade in Sidney, Collins joined Eagle Radio in Chadron. He is currently in his 11th&nbsp;season calling Eagles’ games and has broadcasted nearly 700 combined games for football, volleyball, softball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.

He describes the solo act of rural sports broadcasting as multi-faceted.

“My responsibilities on game day are kind of like all the pieces at work underneath a watch face. What people hear on the radio is that finished product on top of the watch. There’s nobody back at the station playing commercials and then sending it back to me. I’m my own board operator and sound engineer. I control every ounce of the broadcast right there on the site,” he said.

In addition to describing the action for the listeners, Collins said he likes to add context by painting the scenery and atmosphere of the game.

“I’m a sports reporter and a storyteller. Our fans look up to these athletes and watch what they do on the field. I like to see my job as creating a Division I or pro level broadcast,” he said. “My mission on game day is to provide an accurate, compelling, and entertaining broadcast with a deep context and stories for the listeners.”

Organization and preparation are vital leading up to a game, Collins noted.

“Most important, and probably the most involved piece, involves a lot of research. I’ve got to know names and jersey numbers,” he said. “Statistics is a huge piece of sports, so I compile and organize all kinds of different statistics to get ready to help tell the story of the game.”

For example, Collins enjoys being able to tell listeners how a certain player did last year against the same opponent.

“I go through all the main stats within the RMAC and see where we are compared to other schools. I like to find out where we rank nationally and relay that to the fans too,” he said. “I love to find out some fun anecdotes people might not know about with the teams. But my number one job is what’s happening, who’s doing it, and what’s the time and score.”

During his presentation, he described the equipment setup for games and the challenges of traveling with equipment to broadcast away games. In addition to an audio mixer, and a cell phone connecting him to the radio station, he uses an iPad as a live stat monitor.

As part of the game day, Collins manages half-time content and post-game interviews with coaches or players.

“It helps the fans get inside of their thought process. So, whenever we get a chance to do that, I really enjoy it,” he said.

Among the unusual experiences he shared was calling a football game CSC was playing in Illinois while he was watching a live stream of it in Miller Hall when his son Braylon, was due, and he could not travel. Adjusting to adverse conditions is something he has seen numerous times. The night the Beebe Stadium re-opened, a lightning storm caused a 90-minute delay for Collins and his color announcer Sam Parker.

“Building relationships and trust as an Eagle is such a huge part of my job and something so important to me. I consider myself a part of every team and this institution,” Collins said.

 </figure>CHADRON, Neb. — Dave Collins, sports director for Eagle Media in Chadron and the play-by-play voice of the Eagles, guided attendees at the Graves Lecture Tuesday, Oct. 28, through how Chadron State College athletic contests come to life through his broadcasts.Collins grew up in Westminster, Colorado, and earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Colorado. At Colorado, a play-by-play class he took with Denver sports announcer Larry Zimmer helped Collins visualize a realistic pathway to sports broadcasting.“I realized it was not just a dream. I could actually do this,” he said. “I took additional courses and completed a six-month internship with KCNC TV in Denver.”To practice, Collins would sit in the upper deck at Rockies’ games and record himself.“I would sit there and broadcast a game like I was the voice of the Rockies to just practice and get reps and ultimately get tape,” he said.The approach worked and he landed his first job in Sidney, Nebraska, in 2004. After a decade in Sidney, Collins joined Eagle Radio in Chadron. He is currently in his 11th&nbsp;season calling Eagles’ games and has broadcasted nearly 700 combined games for football, volleyball, softball, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.He describes the solo act of rural sports broadcasting as multi-faceted.“My responsibilities on game day are kind of like all the pieces at work underneath a watch face. What people hear on the radio is that finished product on top of the watch. There’s nobody back at the station playing commercials and then sending it back to me. I’m my own board operator and sound engineer. I control every ounce of the broadcast right there on the site,” he said.In addition to describing the action for the listeners, Collins said he likes to add context by painting the scenery and atmosphere of the game.“I’m a sports reporter and a storyteller. Our fans look up to these athletes and watch what they do on the field. I like to see my job as creating a Division I or pro level broadcast,” he said. “My mission on game day is to provide an accurate, compelling, and entertaining broadcast with a deep context and stories for the listeners.”Organization and preparation are vital leading up to a game, Collins noted.“Most important, and probably the most involved piece, involves a lot of research. I’ve got to know names and jersey numbers,” he said. “Statistics is a huge piece of sports, so I compile and organize all kinds of different statistics to get ready to help tell the story of the game.”For example, Collins enjoys being able to tell listeners how a certain player did last year against the same opponent.“I go through all the main stats within the RMAC and see where we are compared to other schools. I like to find out where we rank nationally and relay that to the fans too,” he said. “I love to find out some fun anecdotes people might not know about with the teams. But my number one job is what’s happening, who’s doing it, and what’s the time and score.”During his presentation, he described the equipment setup for games and the challenges of traveling with equipment to broadcast away games. In addition to an audio mixer, and a cell phone connecting him to the radio station, he uses an iPad as a live stat monitor.As part of the game day, Collins manages half-time content and post-game interviews with coaches or players.“It helps the fans get inside of their thought process. So, whenever we get a chance to do that, I really enjoy it,” he said.Among the unusual experiences he shared was calling a football game CSC was playing in Illinois while he was watching a live stream of it in Miller Hall when his son Braylon, was due, and he could not travel. Adjusting to adverse conditions is something he has seen numerous times. The night the Beebe Stadium re-opened, a lightning storm caused a 90-minute delay for Collins and his color announcer Sam Parker.“Building relationships and trust as an Eagle is such a huge part of my job and something so important to me. I consider myself a part of every team and this institution,” Collins said.

The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission also is seeking cash donations to HHH, which was created by the Nebraska Legislature in 2012, so it can continue to feed Nebraskans. Each dollar donated provides two meals of ground venison. More than 900,000 meals have been distributed since the program began.

Hunters May Donate Deer to Hunters Helping the Hungry

University of Nebraska President Jeffrey P. Gold, M.D., joined State Sen. Teresa Ibach and leaders from Nebraska’s public higher education institutions Friday in testifying before the Nebraska Legislature’s Appropriations Committee on the growing fiscal impact of unfunded, state-mandated tuition waivers and the need for sustainable solutions that preserve access and affordability for all students.

Senator Ibach, who introduced LR 261, opened the hearing by emphasizing the importance of understanding the long-term costs of unfunded tuition waivers on Nebraska’s colleges and universities. The interim study was designed to bring data and context to the discussion and to ensure the state continues to honor its commitments to veterans, first responders and other public servants in a fiscally responsible way.

“The University of Nebraska is proud to educate and support veterans, service members, first responders and their families,” said Dr. Gold. “The question is not whether we support our veterans, first responders and their families — we do, unequivocally,” Dr. Gold told the Committee. “The question is how we can continue to do so in a way that is financially sustainable, transparent and equitable to all current and future Nebraska students and families.”

The cost of unfunded tuition waivers at the University has grown rapidly:

“Every dollar in remitted tuition is a dollar we must replace through higher tuition, reduced scholarships, or internal cuts,” Dr. Gold said. “In essence, we are forced to make choices between groups of equally deserving Nebraskans.”

Dr. Gold also noted that nearly all other Big Ten sister states fund and administer these programs directly or reimburse universities.

“When a state determines that certain students should not pay tuition, most states also provide the funding to make institutions whole,” he said. “That helps ensure the programs can endure and continue to benefit those who serve.”

Like universities nationwide, the University of Nebraska faces rising costs, inflationary pressures, and uncertainty in federal research support. All campuses — including the University of Nebraska–Lincoln — are currently implementing budget reductions, with UNL also addressing a structural deficit.

“These pressures require careful stewardship and partnership,” Gold said. “We remain committed to affordability, academic excellence, and growing Nebraska’s workforce, but sustainable policy is the key to serving all Nebraskans.”

NU President Gold Shares Impact of Unfunded Tuition Mandates

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;On Thursday, Oct. 30, Governor Jim Pillen concluded a four-day trade and solidarity mission to Israel. The state’s delegation promoted Nebraska’s unique beef exports to Israel, advocated for Nebraska-built defense technologies, initiated strategic partnerships between Nebraska and Israeli institutions and engaged with a number of companies already doing business in Nebraska. The delegation also saw firsthand how America’s alliance with Israel was critical in the latter’s defensive fights against Hamas, Hezbollah, and Iran since the barbaric attacks of Oct. 7, 2023.

During the mission, Gov. Pillen had fruitful conversations with senior members of the Israeli government, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog. The Governor’s team also met with Mike Huckabee, U.S. Ambassador to Israel. In all of these discussions, the Governor reaffirmed Nebraska’s resolute support of Israel, solidarity with the Jewish people and his desire to build on the already impressive business relationships between Nebraska and Israel.

Boosting Nebraska’s Beef Exports

The Governor had multiple opportunities to champion the state’s high-quality beef while in Israel. Nebraska supplies more than 99 percent of U.S. beef exports to Israel that Israel imports. Fischel Ziegelheim, owner of WR Reserve Protein Group in Hastings, was a core member of the state’s trade delegation. WR Reserve is a leading processor of Angus beef, and its plant in Hastings is one of the only U.S. facilities authorized to export kosher beef to Israel.&nbsp;

The company played a key role in reopening the Israeli market to U.S. beef in 2016, making the first shipment to Israel after the country lifted a longstanding import ban on American beef. WR Reserve operates under strict USDA and Israeli veterinary supervision, with on-site rabbinical teams ensuring full compliance with kosher standards. The business is currently expanding in Hastings, supported by a $1 million Community Development Block Grant award administered by the Nebraska Department of Economic Development.

“When we met with Ambassador Mike Huckabee, he was impressed about Nebraska being the number one cattle producer in the United States,” said Gov. Pillen. “We’re excited that the WR Reserve plant is doubling in size and getting commitments from producers to meet kosher standards. It’s been great to have the Ziegelheims with us for the whole trip to make sure more Nebraska beef comes to Israel.”

Bearing Witness to the U.S.-Nebraska-Israel Partnership for Missile Defense and Israel’s Fight Against Terror

On Wednesday, Nebraska’s delegation toured Palmachim Air Force Base in central Israel. The base is home to the Israeli Air Force’s Air Defense Division, which is responsible for protecting the country from missile attacks. Its duties include operating the Arrow system, designed to intercept incoming ballistic missiles, and the David’s Sling and Iron Dome systems, designed to intercept and destroy shorter-range missiles and rockets. Nebraska companies make an important contribution to Israel’s defense capabilities. In June 2025, Iran launched approximately 550 ballistic missiles at Israel, of which nearly 90 percent were successfully intercepted thanks to the Arrow system’s countermeasures.

“There’s no doubt about it, the people of Nebraska play a critical role in saving lives,” said Governor Pillen. “Our own national security benefits enormously from this relationship, and it was impressive to witness it firsthand.”

While in Israel, Governor Pillen and his delegation also toured Kfar Aza, one of the kibbutz villages in the Gaza Envelope which were viciously attacked by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7, 2023. The barbarism in this kibbutz alone resulted in the murders of over 200 innocent Israeli civilian deaths, including five family members of the young IDF soldier who shared her time showing the Governor the damage wrought on her community. The Governor also visited the Nova Music Festival massacre site, where he heard from a survivor of the attacks.&nbsp;

During his tour of the Gaza Envelope, the Israeli government briefed the Governor on the extent and scope of the October 7th attacks and ensuing two-year war, including the critical role that the Trump Administration and American leadership played in achieving a ceasefire and bringing the living hostages home.

Also, while in Israel, the Governor paid tribute to the victims of the Holocaust at the Yad Vashem Memorial by renewing the eternal flame that burns in their honor and laying a wreath at the ceremonial grave of the victims.

Opportunity for Nebraska’s Expertise to Develop Israeli Infrastructure

John Henderson, Vice Chairman and CEO of HDR, participated in the state trade mission. Headquartered in Omaha, HDR has operated an office in Tel Aviv for more than a decade. Speaking to Nebraska’s media corps from Jerusalem on Tuesday, Henderson remarked on the contributions HDR is making and can make to Israel’s defense, infrastructure and transportation systems.

“There has been a tremendous amount of stress on the infrastructure in the whole of Israel. You can see that just walking around,” said Henderson. “There’s a great opportunity for us to do what we do best as engineers and architects and problem solvers, which is to help build communities. HDR is uniquely equipped to meet those challenges.”

“When we when we grow our book of work here in Israel, it directly benefits our team in Omaha,” he added.

Generosity of Nebraska’s Jewish Community Meeting Critical Needs in Western Galilee Partnership Region

Bob Goldberg, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Omaha (JFO), shared how deeply meaningful it was to strengthen bonds with JFO’s sister city Nahariya in the Western Galilee while on the state’s mission to Israel. He was able to connect directly with humanitarian groups that JFO is supporting to assist isolated seniors, alleviate food insecurity and provide medical care.

“Through the philanthropy and support of our Jewish community members in Omaha and our fellow Nebraskans, we have helped raise money to support many causes, particularly in the last two years since the October 7th tragedy,” Goldberg said. “Our dollars have helped to provide laptops to young students displaced from their homes for months and months on end, allowing them to continue learning with their teachers and fellow students. Our dollars have helped Galilee Medical Center—the largest medical center in the north of Israel—care for residents’ regular medical needs, as well as the medical needs of soldiers injured in battle. Our dollars also go toward programs directed to support those suffering from trauma and stress.”

As Nebraska’s cultural ties to Israel have intensified in recent years, the state’s trade with Israel has also increased. From 2010 to 2019, the value of Nebraska’s exports to Israel averaged $31 million per year. Since 2020, the state’s annual exports to Israel have averaged $51 million, reaching $54 million in 2024.

“The existing trade relationship between Nebraska and Israel is tremendous, but it was also enormously impactful to bear witness to the alliance between our two countries and the gratitude the people of Israel have for America’s support for their frontline fight against violent Islamist extremism,” said Gov. Pillen. “America and Israel are in the same fight, and I was honored to see the fruits of our friendship.”

Each year on November 15, millions of Americans come together for America Recycles Day – a day all about spreading the word on how recycling helps us reduce waste, save energy, and conserve precious resources.

The national organization, of which Keep Alliance Beautiful is an affiliate, suggests using America Recycles Day as a catalyst to start lifelong habits while making a difference in the local community through events such as the Greatest American Cleanup.

On a Saturday this year, the day began when I was in high school in the Lonestar State as “Texas Recycles Day”. The National Recycling Coalition hosted the first America Recycles Day on November 15, 1997. Individual states currently embrace the concept to varying degrees. Colorado, for example, celebrates Colorado Recycles Week.

Here are a few suggestions to mark the occasion:

-Visit the local recycling center/materials recovery facility to recycle, volunteer or take a tour. The KAB Recycling Center is open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday at 107 ½ Cheyenne Ave. in Alliance. Call 308-762-1729 for information or to schedule a time to visit. Walk ins are always welcome.

-Audit your trash and find a new item/material to recycle.

-Start a compost pile. Autumn leaves, fruit and vegetable leftovers and more can become valuable inputs for spring planting.

-Take family and/or friends on a litter walk with separate bags for recyclables.

-Check the basement, attic and garage for potential donations of items others can reuse. The Mission Store turns second-hand stuff into mini-grants benefitting the community.

-Take a load of whatever could not be recycled or reused to the Alliance Municipal Landfill and notice the tons of plastic bottles, tin cans, etc. that could have been recycled.

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people after finding multiple controlled substances and weapons during a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Hamilton County.

Thursday, at approximately 2 p.m., a trooper saw a Saturn SUV failing to maintain its lane on eastbound I-80 near Aurora, at mile marker 332. During the traffic stop, the trooper detected the odor of marijuana coming from inside the vehicle.

Troopers searched the vehicle and located approximately 15 pounds of suspected marijuana, 1 gram of suspected methamphetamine, two handguns, and drug paraphernalia. The driver, Alfred Stewart, 68-years-old, of North Highlands, California, was arrested for possession of marijuana – more than one pound and possession of a firearm during a drug offense. The passenger, Tamesa Stewart, 50-years-old, of Sacramento, California was arrested for possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Both were lodged in Hamilton County Jail.

Troopers Find Guns, Controlled Substances in I-80 Traffic Stop

LINCOLN, Neb. –&nbsp;Governor Jim Pillen released the following statement at the conclusion of today’s Nebraska Economic Forecasting Advisory Board meeting, which reduced the revenue forecast by $120 million in FY 25-26 and $247 million in FY 26-27.

“Since day one, my administration has been focused on running government like a business and bringing fiscally conservative values to Nebraska state government. The forecasting board’s projections underpin the critical work of cutting government spending and identifying efficiencies while we improve services. Earlier this year, I announced our effort to deliver $500 million a year in cuts that will directly benefit hardworking Nebraskans. It’s a big number, but it's necessary as we work to fix the broken property tax system, end special interest carve outs and exemptions, and balance our budget.”

Governor Pillen’s full executive budget recommendation will be released mid-January along with his annual State of the State address.

Alliance Public Library Turkey Trotting Scavenger Hunt

At approximately 4:40 a.m. this morning, the Alliance Communications Center received a call from a resident in the 1600 block of Boise Avenue reporting a theft. The caller stated that tools had been stolen from the back of his truck and additional items had been taken from a shed located behind the residence. The caller was alerted to the theft when his motion-activated security cameras detected movement.

By the time Sergeant Grumbles arrived on scene, the caller had located a large cart filled with tools near 16th Street and Buchfinck Avenue. As Sergeant Grumbles approached, a male on a small motorcycle — matching the description provided by the caller — sped away from the area. The caller had previously observed the same suspect on his security footage.

Sergeant Grumbles attempted to stop the motorcycle, but the rider fled, and a pursuit ensued. The sergeant noted that a small bag of tools appeared to be strapped to the back of the motorcycle. The pursuit continued over the 10 th Street overpass and ended on Otoe Road near County Road 65, where the suspect lost control of the motorcycle, went into a ditch, and fled on foot. Sergeant Grumbles pursued the suspect in his patrol vehicle for a short distance before the suspect ultimately surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident.

The suspect, Blaze Chalupa (M/H, DOB 10/01/2001) of Alliance, was transported to the Alliance Police Department, where he was interviewed by officers. Chalupa admitted to the theft of tools, the burglary of the shed, and to possessing additional stolen property at his residence.

He further stated that he intended to attach the cart filled with tools to his motorcycle and tow it back to his residence. Chalupa told investigators that he planned to sell the stolen tools to make money because he owed an individual a large sum of money for selling him fake methamphetamine.

Officers are currently executing a search warrant at the suspect’s home and expect to recover more stolen property, possibly belonging to additional victims who have not yet been identified.

Chalupa is currently being held at the Box Butte County Jail without bond on the following charges:

ALLIANCE, Neb. - On Wednesday afternoon, at approximately 3:30 p.m., Special Agent Cody Buskirk with the BNSF Police received a report of a suspicious person trespassing on railroad property. While checking the area, Special Agent Buskirk observed an individual matching the description of the auto burglary suspect near Cheyenne Avenue and 2nd Street.

Alliance Police Officers were dispatched to the scene and made contact with the suspect, who stated he was a transient that had arrived in town by hopping a train a few days prior. The suspect did not have any identification on his person. Although the individual resembled the suspect seen in the burglary photos, officers needed to conduct further investigation to confirm his identity.

The suspect agreed to show officers where he had been sleeping and keeping his belongings nearby. After being patted down for weapons, the suspect was transported to the location he described as his camp. While there, he provided conflicting identification information and continued to claim he had no documents either on him or at his camp.

BNSF security cameras were reviewed and showed the suspect trespassing on railroad property. At that point, the suspect was placed under arrest for trespassing and transported to the Alliance Police Department for further questioning. Officers were later able to positively identify the suspect through AFIS fingerprint technology as Anthony Kluesner (M/W, 1/12/68). Kluesner is a registered sex offender, a convicted felon, and has an extensive criminal history spanning multiple states and 40 pages in length.

Further review of additional camera footage in the area led officers to several bags that Kluesner had hidden. Inside, they located clothing matching what he was wearing at the time of the burglary, as seen in photos and videos previously released by the department, as well as his identification. Kluesner also had more than $700.00 in cash on his person, which was seized as evidence.

Kluesner is currently being held at the Box Butte County Jail on a $10,000 bond, facing the following charges:

“Although I am aware that rumors were circulating as early as yesterday afternoon, our officers needed to positively identify this suspect and gather as much evidence as possible prior to charging him, in order to build a strong case for prosecution,” Chief Leavitt said. “I am proud of our officers’ efforts and appreciate the partnership with BNSF and Special Agent Buskirk for his assistance.”

SCOTTSBLUFF, Neb.&nbsp; — Troopers with the Nebraska State Patrol have arrested two people after a brief pursuit and search in Sheridan County.

Tuesday evening at approximately 5:50 p.m. MT, a trooper saw a southbound Buick sedan traveling with no license plates and no lights activated on Highway 87 in Sheridan County. The trooper attempted a traffic stop. The driver initially stopped. As the trooper approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated and fled northbound.

The trooper attempted a traffic stop. The driver initially stopped. As the trooper approached the vehicle, the driver accelerated and fled northbound.A short time later, another trooper successfully deployed stop sticks, which brought the vehicle to a stop near mile marker 73. Two passengers complied with the trooper’s commands and remained with the vehicle. The driver and another passenger fled on foot.The passenger was located a short time later and was taken into custody. The passenger, Tyrone Caldwell, 22-years-old, of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, was in possession of a hatchet. He was arrested for obstructing a peace officer and possession of a concealed weapon.The driver was located approximately one mile north of where the vehicle had stopped and was taken into custody. Michael Jack, 37-years-old, of Pine Ridge, South Dakota, was arrested for flight to avoid arrest, obstructing a peace officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to obey a lawful order, no operator’s license, possession of an open alcohol container and traffic violations.Jack and Caldwell were lodged in Sheridan County Jail. The two passengers who remained with the vehicle did not have charges and were released.
