Lillian May "Babe" Richardson was born September 5th, 1931, in 
Kimball, Nebraska to parents Paul and Mary Brown. She attended grade 
school in the rural Scottsbluff area and graduated from Scottsbluff High
 School in 1950.

After high school, Babe worked as a wrangler at the Wildcat Dude Ranch
 and hostess at Bernie’s Corral Restaurant in the Scottsbluff, NE area. 
She then moved to Ohio where she attended college and worked in Chicago 
as an airline ticket agent. Babe took flying lessons on a single engine 
tail dragger airplane while living in Ohio. Eventually, she moved back 
to Nebraska and met her future husband while working as a bank teller in
 Scottsbluff when a co-worker invited her to go out with a group of 
friends and set Babe up on a blind date.

In January of 1959, Babe was united in marriage to Robert (Bob) 
Richardson. To this union three sons were born, Don, Marvin and Robert

The couple lived on the family’s ranch northwest of Crawford until 
1974 when they moved to a home in the city of Crawford. Babe worked as 
head of housekeeping for Fort Robinson and for many years at the 
Ponderosa Nursing Home in Crawford. She was very active in the community
 belonging to many clubs and organizations and was a staunch supporter 
of the Crawford Fire Department.

Babe was a member of the Crawford United Methodist Church (UNMC) and 
became a representative from the panhandle region of Nebraska for the 
United Methodist Nebraska conference. In her late 70’s she became a lay 
speaker with the UNMC and for multiple years served as pastor for the 
Harrison United Methodist Church and interim pastor at Crawford UNMC.

Babe loved to embroider and quilt, winning awards with her quilts. 
She was never without a camera, taking pictures of her family, friends 
and flower garden at every opportunity. She was an avid reader of 
mystery novels and enjoyed being part of the Crawford community. She was
 a devoted wife, mother, friend and grandmother.

Babe passed away on Monday February 27th, 2023, at the Brookstone 
Meadows Skilled Nursing Center in Elkhorn, Nebraska, surrounded by her 
sons. Preceding her in death were her husband Robert (Bob) Richardson, 
father Paul Brown, mother Mary Krieg, step father Marvin Nelson, sister 
Violet Becker and many close friends and relatives.

She is survived by her three sons and their families Don and Mary Ann
 Richardson (of Winton, North Carolina, Marvin and Margo Richardson (of 
Albuquerque, New Mexico) and Bob and Rhonda Richardson (of Omaha, 
Nebraska), grand children Andrew and Kaitlinn Richardson, step 
grandchildren Maria Sargent, Melissa Adams, Erin O’Reilly, Katie Britt, 
Carissa Lawson, Melissa Phillips, CJ Hines, and Shurri Marie.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 8th, at 11am at the 
Crawford United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow at the Crawford 
cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Crawford Fire Department and the 
Crawford United Methodist Church. Donations can be sent to Chamberlain

Sandra Janine Munn age 68 passed away peacefully at her ranch home southwest of Mullen, NE, March 9, 2023.

Sandy was born on September 29, 1954, in Alliance, NE to Bob and Eileen (Easton) Merrihew.

She attended Swede Valley School and later Hyannis High School, graduating in 1972. After high school she attended Western Nebraska Tecincal College.

Sandy worked in Ogallala as a secretary at the Ogallala Hospital, she did “Yard Work” at the Sale Barn in Ogallala and was a secretary at the Hyannis Schools.

Sandy and Charlie were married July 17, 1976, in Hyannis. They were blessed with two sons and a daughter. Corey, Phil, and Marla.

She was a true rancher’s wife. Sandy knew her horses and cattle – from riding a green colt to pulling a calf if she had to. She helped put up a lot of hay for Bob and later for Charlie. She also fed a lot of hay for Charlie.

Sandy was an excellent cook for brandings and cattle work. If you went away hungry it was your own fault.

She dearly loved her grandkids, lawn work, did leather work, crocheting, knitting, quilting, and gardening.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents Bob and Eileen Merrihew, mother and father-in-law John and Frances Munn, and a sister-in-law Marcy Merrihew.

Sandy is survived by her husband Charlie, daughter Marla, sons Corey and Phil, three grandchildren Haley, Justice, and Wyatt, brothers Jerry (Cheryl) Merrihew, and Neil Merrihew, nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends, including Dawn Lotspeich (special friend), relatives, and neighbors.

Memorials are suggested to Hooker County Ambulance Replacement Fund or Donor’s Choice.

Memorial services will be Friday, March 17, 2023, at 2:00 pm MT at the Hooker County Community Building in Mullen with Charlene Connell officiating. Inurnment will be in the Cedarview Cemetery. Sandy J Munn (1954-2023)

Donald F. Sjostrom, 89, passed away Wednesday, December 14th, 2022 at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs, NE. &nbsp;Memorial services and interment at Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance&nbsp; on Monday,&nbsp; March 20, 2023 at 10:30 a.m.

He was born March 20th, 1933 along with his twin brother Ronald, in Chicago, IL to Herman Sjostrom and Veronica Eileen Sjostrom.

Don entered the U.S. Army on March 24th, 1953 and served until he was honorably discharged on July 26th, 1955.

On March 17th, 1968 he was united in marriage to Paulla J. Vickers in Hemingford, NE.

Don was active in community groups including REACT and Kiwanis. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Chadron State College in 1976. He enjoyed engaging in conversation over a coffee at many local diners and he was a supportive figure in many lives throughout the town. As recognition of his military service, he was awarded the 300,000th Quilt of Valor in April 2022.

His survivors include his wife, Paulla, his children, Jack (Joey) Sjostrom of Las Vegas, NV, Anthony (Amanda Codina) Sjostrom of Lone Tree, CO and Katherine (Mark) Brykit of Toney, Alabama. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin brother, Ronald and older brother, Herman.

Memorial services and interment at Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance will be at a later date, on March 20, 2023.&nbsp; The time will be determined.

school teacher (Leyton and Dix Public Schools). 
 Sue is listed as Noteworthy in English Language Education by Marquis Who’s Who. 
 She leaves a legacy in the generations of children and young adults she taught and influenced. 
 Sue loved and was skilled in the creative arts—decorating and 
crafting, in particular. She was an accomplished singer and voice 
teacher and a gifted choral conductor. She served as Secretary of the 
High Plains Art Council in Sidney, NE. 
 She also loved the Elizabethans. 
 But she was most in her element at the dining room table after a 
meal, telling stories, laughing, and causing those around her to laugh.

Lavern Rieks, 96, of Alden, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023, at 
his rural Alden farm. Memorial services will be 2:00 PM Saturday, March 
11, 2023, at the Counsell Woodley Funeral Home in Iowa Falls. He will be 
laid to rest with military honors at the Alden Cemetery. Visitation will
 be from 1:00 PM until service time on Saturday, March 11 at the funeral

Falls is caring for Lavern and his family. Lavern W. Rieks, 
son of Chris H. and Esther (Tintjer) Rieks, was born May 25, 1926, in 
Burdette, Iowa. He attended country school and was a farmer and 
carpenter his entire life. Lavern served in the United States Army from 
1951-1953, as a tank driver on the front lines during the Korean 
Conflict. On July 2, 1962, he was united into marriage to 
Shirley Hepperle in Blue Earth Minnesota. On June 19, 1994, they renewed 
their vows within the catholic faith at St. Mark Catholic Church in Iowa
 Falls. Lavern and Shirley were proud of their nearly 50 years of 
marriage, their children and their families. They both enjoyed farm life
 and later wintering in Southern Texas making lifelong friends. 
 Lavern Rieks is survived by his daughter, Karen (Don) Eldridge and her 
children, Diana (Robert) Carpenter of Webster City, David Hanus of Otho,

Lavern W. Rieks

A journalist, newspaper publisher, college instructor and administrator,
 author, avid reader and book reviewer, Francis Dean Moul was born on 
April 11, 1940 to Willis Francis (Snook) and Dorothy Dean Moul at York, 
NE. He died March 4, 2023 at the age of 82 at Lincoln, Ne. He graduated 
from Vermillion, SD High School in 1958, and received a bachelor’s 
degree in journalism and a master’s degree in political science from the
 University of South Dakota at Vermillion in 1964 and 1966. He received 
his doctorate in environmental history from the University of Nebraska 
in 1998. He received a Fulbright Scholarship to India at the 
University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, in 1966. His journalism endeavors 
included the Sioux City Journal, Boone News Republican and editorial 
writer at the Des Moines Register and Tribune. He was an instructor in 
political science at Wayne State College and then was a founder, CEO and
 Publisher of the Syracuse, NE Journal-Democrat and Maverick Media, Inc.
 a printing and publishing firm in Syracuse, NE. He also was a
 proprietor of an antiquarian bookstore and art gallery in Lincoln and 
development officer for the Nebraska Community Foundation. He was vice 
president for Institutional Relations at Chadron State College and 
Executive Director of the Chadron State Foundation, retiring in 2001. 
 His book on the National Grasslands was published by the University of 
Nebraska Press in 2006. He wrote numerous articles for Nebraska 
publications, primarily on environmental issues, and wrote hundreds of 
book reviews for the Lincoln Journal Star, Des Moines Register and Omaha
 World-Herald and other newspapers and magazines. He received 
numerous newspaper writing and publishing awards, won the James C. 
Sellers Award for best article in Nebraska History magazine and the 2007
 Nebraska Center for the Book award for best nonfiction book, for the 
National Grasslands. He was a charter founder, director, 
president and volunteer executive director for the Nebraska Wildlife 
Federation and president of numerous organizations in Syracuse and 
Southeast Nebraska, president of Nebraskans for Peace, and first 
associate chair of the Nebraska Democratic Party and member of the 
Democratic National Committee. He married Mary McVay, who died
 at the age of 25 in 1966. Their daughter, Jennifer, was adopted by his 
second wife, Maxine Burnett (married on April 20, 1972), and they had a 
son, Jeff. Jennifer died in an automobile accident in 1985 at the age of
 19. He is survived by his wife, Maxine, of Lincoln; son Jeff 
(Diane Becket) and children, Adia, Annalise and Logan of Rapid City, SD;
 son Bogart (Donna) Nomad and sons Nik and Zak of Elkhorn, NE; brother, 
John Moul of Boone, IA; sister, Judi Leonard of San Jose, CA; 
sisters-in-law, Karlene Moomey of Elwell, MI, Kris Johnson of Lyons, NE,
 and Mary Thomas of San Antonio, TX; and numerous nieces and nephews. He
 was preceded in death by his wife, Mary; daughter, Jennifer; parents 
Willis Francis and Dorothy Dean Moul; sisters Miriam Moul and Maxine 
Carey; mother-in-law Gen McVay; and father and mother-in-law Einer and 
Eva Burnett. A celebration of life will be held in Lincoln at a

Francis D. Moul 

Robert Ponce, 75, of North Platte, passed away on March 3, 2023, at Great Plains Health.&nbsp; He was born to Jess and Jennie (DeLuna) Ponce on March 13, 1947.

Robert was raised in North Platte, graduating with the class of 1965.&nbsp; In 1966, Robert enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War.&nbsp; On January 5, 1967, he married the love his life, Dorothy Martinez, in Kileen, TX, where he was stationed.&nbsp; Together, they had three children: Robert Jr., Philip, and Christina.&nbsp; 

After returning home from Vietnam, he briefly worked at the meat packing plant before beginning his life-long career at the Union Pacific Railroad.&nbsp; He hired on as a track laborer, then worked as a fireman oiler, a machinist helper, a diesel mechanic, a hostler, and eventually became an engineer.&nbsp; In 2007, Robert retired as a locomotive engineer after 32 years with UPRR.&nbsp; Robert was always soft spoken, tender, and patient.&nbsp; He loved to teach what he knew and trained a lot of the engineers at UPRR.&nbsp; He received two purple hearts, a bronze star with valor, and an Army commendation; he held a lot of pride in his service to the United States.&nbsp;

Robert was always known to keep an immaculate yard, even winning “yard of the week” through the local newspaper.&nbsp; He was an avid Nebraska Husker football fan and loved woodworking, building things, science fiction movies, reading, cooking, and barbequing, specifically prime rib.&nbsp; He was known to be able to fix anything with his handyman skills.&nbsp; Robert was a train enthusiast and a collector of all things, from stamps to guns.&nbsp;

Those left to remember Robert are his children, Robert Jr. (Dianne) Ponce of North Platte, Philip (Carmen) Ponce of Council Bluffs, IA, and Christina (Russell) Brown, of Cheyenne, WY; grandchildren, Scott Ponce, Seth (Sharon) Ponce, Elizabeth Ponce, Ashley Brown, Justin Brown, and Kaylie Brown; sisters, Helen Vieyra, Mary Donna Sanchez, Elizabeth (Art) Perez, Sue (Larry) Tridle, Debra Cano, Janet (Lars) Parkhurst; brothers, Randy Ponce and Tim Ponce; brother-in-law, Al Jamsay; aunt, Mary Ponce Carreras; several cousins, nieces, nephews, other family and friends. Robert Ponce (1947-2023)

Daniel Edward Dreyer, age 35 went to heaven February 28, 2023 at his home in Newton, KS after suffering from a serious medical emergency.&nbsp; Danny was born May 27, 1987 to Ronald and Marie Dreyer in Denver, CO.&nbsp; He weighed in at 3lbs, 15oz. He was eager to grow up. He doubled his weight at 1 month, tripled it in 2 months and quadrupled it in 3 months. Danny joined his family as the youngest child following siblings, Mike and Sandy. Sandy slept by his bassinette for a very long time in order to keep a close attentive eye on him.

He was baptized into the Christian faith at the family home church, Immanuel Lutheran Church of Rushville, NE.

He grew into boyhood helping on his family farm, helping his father repair farm equipment and doing electrical work, learning much more than he realized he was learning.

At age 9 he experienced the loss of his brother Mike. While trying to make sense of this tragedy he asked the astute question “Dad, what is Mike doing in heaven?”

He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church.

He attended Prairie View Dist. #22, until grade 7, then he entered&nbsp; Rushville Public Schools in grade 8. He graduated Rushville High School with the Class of 2005. He attended Chadron State College studying engineering and worked summers at Henkens Implement. After 2 years of college at CSC, he transferred to the University of Nebraska at Lincoln graduating with a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. During the Summer while at UNL he went to work for AGCO with the harvest support brigade, combine field test crew and windrower field test group.

After graduating UNL he immediately went to work for AGCO Inc. in Hesston, KS. in the windrower engineer department. One of his first assignments was to go to Denmark, where he and another associate spent 2 weeks modifying a new AGCO Combine to meet Denmark’s transportation standards. While at AGCO he was employed for 12 years to attained to position of Senior Design Engineer.

Leaving to mourn his death: Father Ron, Mother Marie, Sister Sandra (Andrew) Doernemann, nephews Owen and Lucas. Many aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends and acquaintances. He knew no stranger.

Memorial services will be held March 6, 2023 10:00 A.M. at Broadway Colonial Funeral Home Chapel in Newton, KS with Pastor Donna Voteau presiding. He will then be taken to Rushville, Nebraska and services will be held March 8, 2023 10:00 A.M. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Rushville with Pastor Allen Werslke presiding. He will be laid to rest by brother Mike at Fairview Cemetery in Rushville.

Christian Eric Schumacher, 51, of Hummelstown, PA, formerly of Nebraska, passed away unexpectedly on March 2, 2023.

He was born April 25, 1971, in Scottsbluff, NE, son of Wayne and DeAnne Schumacher.

Christian
 graduated from the University of Nebraska and was a former Conductor 
for Union Pacific Railroad in Nebraska. He was a member of the Eagles 
Club of North Platte, NE and the APA of North Platte, NE.

Christian
 is survived by; wife, Angela Schumacher; sons, Michael and Justin 
Schumacher; mother, DeAnne Schumacher; sisters, Ingrid (Craig) 
Christman, Trina Madden, and Stephanie (Brian Melville) Reiman; brother,
 Mikel (Melinda) Schumacher, and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his father, Wayne Schumacher.

 memorial service will be held on Monday, March 6, 2023, at 11AM in the 
Hoover Funeral Home of Hershey, Pa. The family will begin receiving guests

Christian Eric Schumacher (1971-2023)

Stephen Clark Gable of Surprise, AZ, formally of Scottsbluff, passed away at his home on February 27, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. &nbsp;A celebration of life will be held in May, in Surprise.

Steve was born March 29, 1945, in Scottsbluff, to Bill and MaryAnn Gable. He married the love of his life, Jade Ready, on March 24, 1968, and they welcomed with joy, children Heidi &amp; Todd. Steve was

General Manager of 7 panhandle, L. B. Murphy stores, and when the stores closed in 1985, the family moved to Arizona. Steve went back to college and earned his BA &nbsp;in Computer Science &amp; Business Accounting. He worked at Rainbow Acres, as a Comptroller, &nbsp;in Camp Verde, AZ, until his retirement in 2010.

Steve is survived by his wife of nearly 55 years, Jade. Children, Heidi (Sarge) Durbin, and Todd (Jena) Gable. Grandchildren, Colten and Tanner Selman, Jordyn Crabb, Samantha Ready, Brendan and&nbsp; Brock Gable, as well as 3 great grandchildren. Sister, Cleta (Randi) Nuss, sisters-in-law, Florence Gable, Jan Ready Plogg, Jill Ready, and Father-in-law, Marvin Ready.

Proceeding Steve in death, were parents, Bill &amp; Mary Ann Gable, brother Mike, parents-in-law, Jane and Rich Enger, and brother-in-law, John Ready.

Bonnie Lou (Weber) Marrs was born in Merriman, Nebraska, on November 20, 1928, to Fredrick W. and Vera E. (Stultz) Weber. She passed from this life to her eternal home on March 1, 2023, at Chadron Community Hospital in Chadron, Nebraska.

She married the love of her life, Oscar Dale Marrs on August 30, 1946, in Valentine, Nebraska. They celebrated 51 years of marriage before Dale passed away on December 22, 1997. To this union 4 children were born, Terry, Bill, Don, and Dee.

Bonnie enjoyed camping, gardening, and traveling to visit family, which she and Dale always did together. She did not know a stranger. Her greatest joy was her babies, no matter how old they are.

She is survived by her children, Terry (Sherrie) Marrs of Pikeville, KY, Bill (Kathy) Marrs of Crystal Lake, IL, Don (Sandy) Marrs of Rapid City, SD, and Dee (Arty) Vinton of Gordon, NE.

She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 26 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren, cousin Eldon&nbsp;Lessert and extended family and friends.

She was the “other Mother” to Judy, Diana, Bev, John, Tom, and Dick, who also survive her.

She is preceded in death by her husband Dale, great grandson Tayler Fuchs, her parents, grandparents, special cousins Sis, Teenie, Bobby Ann and Jack and well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

Joseph Robert Sloan entered this world June 18, 1985, one minute before his twin brother Joshua Ryan, making him the older brother and giving him the right to use his brother’s name anytime he wanted. Five years later, his sister, Brooke Jerae, was born, and Joe instantly became her second father. Joe loved all things Nebraska, art, music, golf, animals, Huskers, his family, and every one of his many friends. He lived a life of healthy eating and activity. He was kind, caring, friendly, loving and always willing to sacrifice his time to help others. His creative endeavors evolved over the years from drawing and painting, to rapping and brainstorming new Laffy Taffy jokes, to eventually singing and writing his own songs while playing the piano and guitar. In later life, he developed a profound love for his nieces and nephews, who brought so much joy to his life. He would do anything to make them smile.

Joe attended St. Agnes Academy and Grandview Elementary in Alliance before the family moved to Gering, where he would graduate with the class of 2004. He graduated with honors from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln in 2008. After working in Omaha and farming in North Bend, he came home to western Nebraska to experience the cattle business. He had worked as an Originator for New Alliance Bean, WESTCO for 3 years before he died on February 21st, 2023 at the age of 37.

Joe leaves behind his parents, Jerry and Terri Sloan; Brother, Joshua (Amy); Sister, Brooke (Tyler) Briggs, Sister-Cousin, Jenn (Andrew) Bennett and Sister-Cousin, Amy (Justin) Hellman. Uncle Joe was dearly loved by Londyn, Savannah, Nash and Harley Sloan of Hastings, NE; Caden and Grayson Briggs of Windsor, CO; Sheppard and Sawyer Bennett of Omaha, NE; and Sloan Koehler of Omaha, NE. He is also survived by Uncle John (Ronna) Sloan; Grandparents Don and Sally Schott; Aunt Lou Anne Lundgren, Brittany (Chris) Rogers, Austin (Holly) Lundgren and Holden; Aunt Melissa (Eddie) Bennett, Chase (Megan) Bennett, Paislee, Tripp and Tyce; Tarah (Alton) Brent, Olittia, and Keegan Bennett.

Welcoming Joe will be Grandparents Dwight Sloan and Doris Sloan, Aunt Christine and Great Aunt Mirm. Upon entry into heaven, we suspect he started break dancing, introducing himself to any strangers and becoming instant friends with them while asking the best place to go to get a glass of milk and a knuckle sandwich. Eventually we anticipate him waiting at Heaven’s gate for his family and a long list of friends to join him. He will most likely call each one of us a “blister” for showing up when he has gotten all the work done.

Our Celebration of Life for Joey will be March 4th at 3 pm at the Weborg 21 Centre in Gering, Nebraska. Casual attire is welcome. Joe’s favorite refreshments will be provided. Memorial donations may be given to the family for designation at a later date. Family is working on the best way to honor Joe.

Robert Allen Wood, Sr., 62 of Alliance, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2023 at Regional West Medical Center.

The son of Dwight and Charlotte (Spaulding) Wood, he was born in Peoria, Illinois on March 28, 1960.

He graduated high school and had various jobs growing up until he found his passion of being an over the road truck driver.&nbsp; He drove trucks for many companies for the next 30 years until his health changed plans for him.&nbsp; While driving the truck he met Jill Diane Minich, and they were united in marriage on March 21, 1997.

He is survived by his wife, Jill, his sons, Robert (Mary) Wood, II of Chillicothe, IL and Alex Wood of Mackinaw, IL, his step-children, Scotty (Regina) Minich and Troy Minich of Alliance, and his grandchildren, Nyla Stone, Marcus Stone, Devon Stone, Rhiannon Herstedt, Cody Minich and Katelynne Minich. He is also survived by his birth mother, Judy Tuttle, his half-sister, Tammy Croisant and his half-brother, Rocky Tuttle all of Clifton, CO.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 1, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Gurley Cemetery at Gurley, Nebraska.&nbsp; Visitation will be Tuesday from 2-5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dorothy "Dot" Maxine&nbsp; Rose. 89, of Arthur, NE passed away Friday, February 24th, 2023 at Ogallala Community Hospital.

Dorothy was born June 24th, 1933 to Ernest and Elsie (Duskin) Weinel in Alliance, NE.

Dorothy attended Alliance Public&nbsp; Schools&nbsp; and worked for a bakery&nbsp; and as a cooks helper.

She married Donald Rose at St. John's Lutheran Church in Alliance on May 8th, 1955.&nbsp; &nbsp;They made their home 10 miles north of Lakeside, NE on the Joy Camp of the Meyers Land and Cattle Company.

In 1963, they moved to Arthur, NE, where she worked on the Sillassen Ranch as the ranch cook.&nbsp; They moved into Arthur in 1979 where Dorothy worked as a waitress and&nbsp; for the Village of Arthur.

Dorothy is preceded in death by; her husband Don, and her parents Ernest and Elsie.

Dorothy is survived by; her sons Dennis (Jolene) Rose of Arthur and Steve (Cindy) Rose of Alliance, Twin brother Donald Weinel of&nbsp; Shreveport, Louisiana.&nbsp; Sisters Florence Sydow of Wheatland, Wy and Bonnie Duncan of Scottsbluff, NE.

Lola M. (Johnson) Schadwinkel, age 93, passed peacefully Sunday, February 19, 2023 in the Memory Support Unit of Highland Park Care Center with her daughters by her side.

She was born September 14, 1929 to Chester R and L. Pearl (Eivins) Johnson.&nbsp; She graduated from Mullen High School in 1947 and attended the University of Nebraska graduating in 1952 with a degree in Elementary Education.&nbsp; She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority at the University.

Her teaching career began in Alliance Public Schools in 1952 as a Kindergarten teacher.&nbsp; During this time she met Emil A (Ted) Schadwinkel and they were married November 21, 1954.&nbsp; Shortly after they married, they moved to Mullen, NE.&nbsp; Their three children were born while living in Mullen.&nbsp; In 1962 they relocated to Alliance, NE and Lola worked as a substitute teacher for several years and eventually took a full time job teaching.&nbsp; Lola retired in 1993 but stayed active as a substitute teacher for both Alliance and Hemingford School Systems for several years.

Lola was a member of the United Methodist Church and an active member of their choir and a ladies group.&nbsp; She was a member of Eastern Star, Community Choir, volunteered for the American Red Cross to assist with swimming lessons, and P.E.O. Chapter AH.

She was preceded in death by her husband Ted, her parents, her in-laws Albert and Orletha Schadwinkel, brothers Chester, Bill, Don, sister Eleanor, and sister-in-law Kathy.

Lola is survived by her three children, Sally (Steve) Engelhaupt, Craig (Robin) Schadwinkel, and Sue (Trent) Benzel.&nbsp; Additional survivors are her sister Patricia Wallingford, brother-in-law Charles (Mary) Schadwinkel, her grandchildren Andrea Krueger, Erin Rosenthal, Tim Engelhaupt, Bryan Benzel, Shaylah Stephens, Kayleigh Hickman as well as 7 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held Monday, February 27, 2023 at 10 a.m.&nbsp; at the United Methodist Church in Alliance with Pastor Gideon Achi officiating.&nbsp; Burial will follow at the Alliance Cemetery. Valorie was born February 27, 1929, in Alliance, Nebraska, to Vaughn and Dorothy Germain, and received her early education at Nine Mile, graduating from Minatare High School in 1946. She married Willard Russell on February 22, 1947, in Sidney, and they made their home in Minatare. She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and was a devoted farm wife, working with Willard on the dairy. Cooking was her passion and her food was remarkable, feeding her family and all of the workers who helped on the farm. She loved her animals, keeping pet dogs, cats, raccoons, and even a skunk.

Survivors include her son, Kit Russell; daughter, Gwen (Bob) Johnson; grandson, Daryl (Amy) Freouf; great-granddaughter, Lilly Freouf; son-in-law, Don Freouf; step-grandson, Zach Johnson with step-great-grandsons, Tristen Johnson and Landan Johnson; and step-grandson, Trevor (Lindsey) Johnson with step-great-granddaughter, Ella Johnson,.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard; and daughter, Dorothy “Dottie” Freouf.

Glenn Forrest Kelsey of Bayard NE, passed away Feb. 19, 2023, at the age of 75.

He was born to Forrest and Patricia Kelsey in New Britain, CT, in 1947.

Growing up in CT, he met and married his high school love, Dianne (Welch) Kelsey before deployment to Vietnam to serve his country in the U.S. Army. Returning to Haddam to raise his family, he worked tirelessly in construction, mechanics, and teaching CDL at Eversource Power Company. Finally following his dreams and children, he moved west to Montana in 1992. He shared a love for horses with his daughter that continued on well past her competition years. He also schooled himself in horse massage, horse showing and boarding, and continued a career in mechanics for John Deere on heavy equipment until his retirement. After retirement he made Nebraska his home.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Dianne, of Bayard; His daughter, Danielle (Ross) Whitney of Bayard; Son, Glenn Kelsey of Craig Colorado; Brother, Michael Kelsey of Falmouth, MA: as well as his beloved grandchildren, Colby Whitney, Tyler Kelsey, Jenna Kelsey, Leota Kelsey, Rebekah Kelsey, and Cass Kelsey, with one great-granddaughter, Serenity; a niece, Penelope; and nephew, Forrest.

He was preceded in death by his father, Forrest; mother, Patricia; and brother, Tony.

Glenn Forrest Kelsey (1947 - 2023)

Clifford “Cliff” Layne Furrow, 91, of Alliance, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2023 at Highland Park Care Center.

Cliff was born to Lyle E. and Gladys G. (VanDuesen) Furrow on July 5, 1931 in Mullen, Nebraska. Cliff was the oldest of six children all raised just south of Mullen in Hooker County. Cliff was a 1950 graduate of Mullen High School. He then found the love of his life, Jean “Pat” Peedon and they married May 13, 1952 in Mullen.&nbsp; To this union 4 children were born.

Cliff enlisted in the Army June of 1952, where they were stationed at Camp Crowder, MO and then Fort Dix, New Jersey where Robert was born. Cliff was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal upon his honorable discharge in June of 1954. The family then moved to Valentine and ranched in the area before they moved to Alliance in 1963 where they made this their forever home raising their children and making many friends.

Cliff was an independent floor installer until 1978 when he hired onto the Burlington Northern Railroad as a conductor and worked until his retirement in 1993. He coached Little League Baseball for many years and enjoyed hobbies collecting tractors and remodeling toy cars and trucks. Cliff deeply loved his family and had a very strong faith in God. He was involved with the Hiway 20 Antique Tractor Club and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Alliance.

Cliff is survived by his sister, Pauline LeMay of Scottsbluff; sister-in-law, Jan Furrow of Mullen; his four children, Robert (Patty) Furrow and Randy (Laura) Furrow, all of Alliance, Sherrie Elwood of Hay Springs, and Lisa (Jim) Grapentine of Belle Fourche, SD. He also leaves 12 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren. He will be deeply missed but we know he is in the comfort of God’s love. Cliff was preceded in death by his wife, Jean “Pat” Furrow; his parents, Lyle and Gladys Furrow; his mother in-law, Lola Peedon; his brother, John Furrow; his sisters, Phyllis Howard, Lila Baldwin and Georgia (Jodi) Oien; and his son-in-law, Curtis (Coop) Elwood.

Memorial services will be held Monday, March 6, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church.&nbsp; Pastor Sue Spencer will officiate.&nbsp; Inurnment will be in the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance at a later date.

Jerry attended school in Gandy through the 8th grade then went to the University of Nebraska School of Agriculture in Curtis. Following high school graduation he attended Chadron State College for two years. He married Donna Schlem and they raised two daughters. Jerry worked on a ranch for 45 years, 20 years as a ranch hand and 20 more as foreman, and obtained his real estate and brokers licenses. He was active in Logan County where he served as County Commissioner for 12 years, was on the Extension Board for 2 terms and served a few terms on the Fair Board. Jerry enjoyed his horses and team roping, calf roping and team penning. He looked forward to riding and driving and in later years played a fair amount of golf.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Nedra; brother, James Johnson; sisters, Arta Jean Kramer, Joan Gaites and Janice Johnson; and granddaughter, Meagan Schroeder. Survivors include Jerry's wife, Donna; daughters, Dodie Johnson and Laurie (Doug) Streeter of North Platte; granddaughter, Kaylen Streeter and grandson, Logan Streeter; great-grandkids, Rylee, Kyen and Tysean Schroeder; sister-in-law, Jackie Johnson of South Dakota; as well as numerous nieces, nephews other family.

Gerald “Jerry” F. Hochstein, age 89 of 
Hartington, Nebraska, died on Friday, February 17, 2023, at the Arbor Care
 Center in Hartington.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, February 21, 2023, at 
10:30 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Hartington with the Rev. 
Owen Korte officiating.&nbsp; Traditional visitation will be on Monday, at 
church, from 5-8:00 p.m. with a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. Visitation 
will continue on Tuesday morning one hour prior to services.&nbsp; Cremation 
will occur after the mass and burial of his cremated remains will be at 
St. John the Baptist Cemetery in Fordyce, NE at a later date.&nbsp; 
Arrangements are under the direction of the Wintz Funeral Home in

Gerald Francis was born on May 3, 1933, in Fordyce, Nebraska, to Edmund
 Ludwig and Gertrude Alma (Kathol) Hochstein.&nbsp; He grew up in Fordyce, NE
 and attended school in Fordyce until the 10th grade.&nbsp; He 
graduated from Holy Trinity High School in 1950.&nbsp; After high school, 
Jerry began farming with his dad and then married Joan Marie Schwartz on
 April 12, 1955, in Hartington. In 1958, he began farming south of 
Pleasant Valley, NE which is the home place. He raised livestock and 
grain.&nbsp; Jerry and Joan lived on the farm until moving into Hartington in
 2004. Farming was always the love of Jerry’s life and continued to be 
active in the farming operation even after moving into town.

Jerry was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the 4th
 Degree Knights, National Cattleman’s Association, National Corn Growers
 Association, and the American Soybean Association. Jerry loved to bowl 
and was a member of the 800 Series Club with an 807 series in 1998.&nbsp; He 
was a Pioneer and Dekalb Seed Corn salesman.&nbsp; He received the 
Outstanding Young Farmer award on December 8, 1959.&nbsp; He was involved in 
4-H his entire life.&nbsp; Formerly played baseball and softball until he was
 56 years old.&nbsp; Jerry golfed and was a member of the Hole-in-One Club 
having had two holes-in-one.&nbsp; He was a former Hartington Golf 
Invitational Champion.&nbsp; Jerry and Joan loved to travel and several of 
their trips were to Australia and New Zealand and numerous other 
locations. He was always ready to come back to the farm sooner than 
later.

Gerald is survived by his wife Joan of Hartington; five children Pam 
Howell of Hartington, Frank (Andrea) Hochstein of Hartington, Brad

Gerald 'Jerry' F. Hochstein (1933-2023)

Bruce Allen Brinker, age 62, of North Platte, passed away at Great 
Plains Health on February 18, 2023. Bruce was born to William "Bill" and Lolita Brinker at Newcastle, WY, on 
July 3, 1960.&nbsp; He grew up in Chadron, NE, Rapid City, SD, and Corpus 
Christi, TX, where he graduated from high school in 1978.&nbsp; He then moved to North Platte and hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad, working as a signalman. Bruce was united in marriage to Vickie Williss Tilford on March 20, 
1993, in North Platte where they made their home. Bruce was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.&nbsp; He liked 
Nebraska sports and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching John Wayne movies, and playing slot machines.&nbsp; Bruce especially loved his family and making people laugh. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Lolita Brinker; and 
in-laws, Bob and Bea Williss. Bruce is survived by his wife, Vickie; son, James Brinker of Geneva and 
daughter, Stacy Brinker of Tulsa, OK; stepchildren, Cyrus Tilford and 
Tanille (Thomas) Keefer of North Platte; his sister, Teresa (Curt) Bach 
of Chadron; brothers, Gary (Karen) Brinker and Bill (Deb) Brinker of 
North Platte; grandchildren, Joshua, Lukas, Josephine, Jazmin, Makenna, 
Rihanna, Taysen, Myah, Brantley, Mason, Cole, Ryker and Maybelle; his 
special girl, Macie; as well as other family.

 </figure>Bruce Allen Brinker, age 62, of North Platte, passed away at Great 
Plains Health on February 18, 2023. Bruce was born to William "Bill" and Lolita Brinker at Newcastle, WY, on 
July 3, 1960.&nbsp; He grew up in Chadron, NE, Rapid City, SD, and Corpus 
Christi, TX, where he graduated from high school in 1978.&nbsp; He then moved to North Platte and hired on with the Union Pacific Railroad, working as a signalman. Bruce was united in marriage to Vickie Williss Tilford on March 20, 
1993, in North Platte where they made their home. Bruce was a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen.&nbsp; He liked 
Nebraska sports and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching John Wayne movies, and playing slot machines.&nbsp; Bruce especially loved his family and making people laugh. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Lolita Brinker; and 
in-laws, Bob and Bea Williss. Bruce is survived by his wife, Vickie; son, James Brinker of Geneva and 
daughter, Stacy Brinker of Tulsa, OK; stepchildren, Cyrus Tilford and 
Tanille (Thomas) Keefer of North Platte; his sister, Teresa (Curt) Bach 
of Chadron; brothers, Gary (Karen) Brinker and Bill (Deb) Brinker of 
North Platte; grandchildren, Joshua, Lukas, Josephine, Jazmin, Makenna, 
Rihanna, Taysen, Myah, Brantley, Mason, Cole, Ryker and Maybelle; his 
special girl, Macie; as well as other family. 
Memorial service will be 11 a.m. on Saturday, February 25, 2023, at 
Odean Colonial Chapel with Father Sagar officiating.&nbsp; The memorial book

Bruce Allen Brinker (1960-2023)

Dennis L. West, age 70, of Ravenna, passed away peacefully with loved ones by his side on February 8, 2023 at Good Samaritan Society - St. John's in Kearney after a long battle with COPD.

Dennis was born to Harry and Bertha [Retke] West on June 28, 1952 in Alliance, NE. He attended school in Alliance and enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17. He was a veteran of the Vietnam Era and served honorably from February 1970 to December 1972, receiving several service medals. He was an engineer for 26 years with Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad until retirement in October 2000. Dennis then made his home in Ravenna, Nebraska.

Dennis was known for his great sense of humor, storytelling, generosity, empathy, and thoughtfulness. He deeply enjoyed life through outdoor activities, gardening, trading on the stock market, and spending time with loved ones. In the last few years he enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels on his porch that he watered and fed daily. Dennis will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and animals.

Dennis is survived by his five children, Priscilla Angela Sandoz [Brandon] Bailey of Scottsbluff, NE; Jessica Andrea [Jason] Schmick of Burnsville, MN; Shawn Levi Alexander [Tara] West of Gering, NE; Mari Mariah O'Neill [David] McDaniels of Deltona, FL; Shay Ann [Kenneth] Olea of Omaha, NE; and significant other Connie McKeon of Ravenna, NE. He is also survived by siblings Carol [Bernard] Gasseling of Lincoln, NE; Gary [Barb] West of Hastings, MN; Ray West of Grand Island, NE; Ron West of Alliance, NE, as well as 10 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter expected in February, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, and infant brothers, Leroy and Billy.

A celebration of his life and graveside service, including full military honors, will be held on Friday, April 14, 2023 at 1:00 PM at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery, 2610 County Road 57, Alliance, NE. Reception dinner will immediately follow with the location announced after the service.

Rita Fe (Gonzalez) Alvarado, 84, passed away February 14, 2023 at Box Butte General Hospital in Alliance, NE.

She was born October 27, 1938 at St. Joseph Hospital in Alliance, NE to Fernando and Patrocina (Vargas) Gonzalez.&nbsp; She attended Alliance Public Schools.&nbsp; On January 26, 1957 she was united in marriage to Mike Alvarado, also of Alliance.&nbsp; From this union 4 children were born.

Rita was a wonderful cook with Mexican food being her specialty.&nbsp; Her family came first and she loved her pets.&nbsp; She enjoyed her music and loved to sing with her brothers’ band.&nbsp; She worked at Woolrich and Rainbow Lodge.&nbsp; The Morrill’s considered her part of the family.&nbsp; She never knew a stranger and greeted them with her beautiful smile.
