Larry Lance Bixby, 72, died July 31, 2021 in Rapid City, SD following a brief illness. Lance will long be remembered by family and friends for his good-natured sense of humor, generosity, and strong work ethic, which was equally matched by a strong sense for enjoying life and having fun with friends and family.

Lance, the oldest of 6 children, was born to Larry Lawrence and Margaret Ruth (Merrihew) Bixby on October 30, 1948 in Alliance, NE. His early years were lived on the family ranch north of Ellsworth, NE in the Nebraska Sandhills. It was there that he learned the cattle and ranching business and enjoyed time spent in many outdoor activities with family and friends. One of the memories that he mentioned most often from his early years was ice skating and pond hockey on Home Lake with family and nearby neighbors. Lance completed elementary school at Spade Ranch School District 131, a one-room rural school. In May 1966, he graduated from Gordon High School, Gordon, NE.

Following graduation, Lance and Kathie Kay Sandage were married in September 1966. They lived in Scottsbluff, NE where Lance attended business school for a brief time before being called to serve in the U.S. Army. After completing basic training in Fort Ord, CA, he was stationed for a time at Fort Eustis, VA before shipping out to Vietnam. Upon completion of his service in Vietnam, Lance was stationed at Fort Benning, GA and then served in Army reserves until 1975.

After returning home from the service, Lance went to work with his father and grandfather on the family ranch where he grew his cattle business and his family. He eventually built a home on the land that had been claimed and homesteaded by his great grandmother. Daughter Jennifer was born in 1975 and son Lindsey in 1977. Lance later married Angelica Beck and helped raise her son, Dakota. Their daughter Sierra was born in 1996.

While Lance was a hard worker and taught his children the value of a strong work ethic, he also made sure there was time for plenty of fun, too. Many weekends were spent camping, fishing and skiing with his family and friends at Lake McConaughey over the years. He also enjoyed bowling, golf and riding his motorcycle or trike. Mostly, he really just enjoyed a good visit. Whether you knew him or not, if you happened to be near him, you were going to visit with him.

In 2020, Lance and son Lindsey made the difficult decision to sell the ranch where he had lived and worked all his life. Upon making this decision, Lance set about finding a new home and getting on about the business of living and enjoying life. After living for a few months in Black Hawk, SD, Lance found a few acres with a home and barn near New Underwood, SD that “felt a little more like home”. He was enjoying his time there with his two spoiled canine companions, making new friends, reconnecting with old friends, attending the activities of Lindsey’s family and making sure there were comfortable accommodations for visits from daughters Jennifer and Sierra. Lance would tell you that his greatest accomplishments in his life were his children and his greatest loves were his grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by many.

Lance was preceded in death by his younger brother O’Ryan Bixby, first wife Kathie (Sandage) Bixby, father Larry Bixby, mother Margaret Bixby, and second wife Angelica (Beck) Bixby. He is survived by daughter Jennifer (Craig) Sanders and children Caelyn and Brynnlie, Clam Gulch, AK; son Lindsey (Kendra) Bixby and children Layne and Kinley, Rapid City, SD; daughter Sierra (Nick Maser) Bixby, Alliance, NE; dear friend and companion Candi Rager; sisters Teri (Ted) Junge, Joni Bixby, Mari (Marshall) Garner, Marni (Steve) Harris, as well as many nieces and nephews.

Mary “Jean” Seidler was born in Alliance on July 20, 1936, the 4th of 11 children of Railey and Mary Koozer. She attended country school and graduated from Alliance High School. Family meant everything to Jean and her face would light up with joy every time she got to hold her grandbabies.

She also loved to garden and couldn’t wait to taste that first cucumber or tomato. She had a love of flowers, as evidenced by the numerous flowerbeds in her yard.

Jean also raised another set of kids working at Grocery Kart, teaching them to work hard and always do a good job.

She was called home to her Lord and Savior on August 12th, after a short battle with lung cancer.

Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Wilbur, an infant daughter Linda, a brother and several sisters.

She is survived by her children; Susan (Douglas) Reed of Maryville, MO; Daniel (Carolyn) Seidler of Alliance; Melanie (Steve) Schnose of Buffalo Gap, SD; and Craig (Wendy) Seidler of Alliance; her grandchildren: Robert Reed, Angela (Lance) Nelson, Jon (MacKenzie) Reed, Jennifer Haleakala, Sara (Colin) Hansen, Tyler (Barbara) Seidler, Sarah (Troy) Lunbery, Courtney (Edison) Red Nest, Josh (Shalyn) Barber, Rebekah (Joe) Hoof, Josie (Daniel) Quick, and Bradan Seidler; 32 great grandchildren and numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Thursday, August 19 at 7:00pm at the United Methodist Church in Alliance, NE.&nbsp; The service for Jean Seidler will be Friday, August 20 at 2:00pm at the United Methodist Church in Alliance, NE.

Mary “Jean” Seidler (1936 - 2021)

We said goodbye to our beloved husband and father, Walter Scholl, early in the morning of August 15th, 2021, at the age of 87. While these last months have been challenging, his life and legacy will live on. His life began with humble beginnings with parents Frida and Otto who emigrated from Germany in 1928, settling in Mountain Lake, Minnesota.

Days on the tractor plowing fields in the summer with his ‘custom exhaust’ (leading to hearing aids later in life), heating rocks by the fire with his 6 brothers and sisters to put at the base of their beds on frigid Minnesota nights, led to a desire to better his future. He went on to graduate with a degree in Music Ministry from Grace Bible Institute in Omaha, Nebraska, and then met his incredible future wife Drusilla Inman in February of 1958, during their second semester at Omaha University, now UNO where Dru was finishing her bachelor’s degree. As their fledgling relationship grew, he worked different jobs including driving a taxicab, working as a film editor at KMTV, to sorting vegetables at a warehouse downtown.

Their favorite dating spot was Caniglia’s Pizza, and while their time in Omaha was leading towards a lifetime together, Walt’s educational goals led him to moving solo to Chadron State College where he finished his degree in Music Education. Dru followed her beau to Chadron soon after they wed in Omaha on July 1st, 1961, beginning their loving, 60-year adventure in western Nebraska. Upon graduating from CSC with his bachelor’s degree, they moved to Mitchell, NE, where he taught German and choral music at the high school.

After graduating with his Master’s degree from the University of New Mexico, they began to grow their family. Brenda and Karla arrived soon after they moved to Alliance, NE, where he again taught German and choral music at the high school. He ultimately finished his PhD from The Ohio University in Comparative Arts, when their ‘PhD surprise’, Kurt, arrived, rounding out their family. They once again found their way back to Chadron after receiving a call from Chadron State College, leading to his 25-year tenure teaching German and Humanities, focusing especially on his love of architecture.

They found their lifelong home south of Chadron in 1977 on their beautiful acreage in the pines, where he ultimately lived his final days, with his family by his side. After retirement, his addiction for golf began, where, from 1992 forward, you could find him on the golf course 5 days a week, 7, if Dru would allow. The camaraderie, friendship, and enjoyment that he found at the golf course was profoundly fulfilling.

He also found a love of writing, with a quest for answers that led to a prolific number of papers and poetry, with every scribbled word transposed to type by his wife Dru, who throughout his life put his words to paper. We are most proud of our father’s spiritual journey through life, and expression of his thoughts through his writings, a legacy cherished. He was very proud of the home they built, and the trails through the forest that we continue to love to this day. His pride&nbsp;never wavered, and he would talk about his ‘farm’ to any that would lend an ear. He and Mom loved traveling with their cars, campers, travel trailers, and motorhomes, reveling in the beauty of the United States (covering nearly every state), instilling the same adventurous spirit in his children. Not bad for a guy from such humble beginnings.

Well done Dad, you led an incredible, fulfilling, remarkable life filled with adventure, love, and passion, leaving a lifetime of memories for your adoring wife and children. We love you. Good night, Dr. Scholl.

Walter Scholl (1933 - 2021)

Merlin D. Ring, 80, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2021 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance.

He was born June 18, 1941 in Alliance to George and Cleo (Rentfro) Ring. Merlin grew up South of Ashby on his family’s ranch in Garden County.

On August 24, 1965 he was united in marriage to Tonchita “Toni” J. Carpenter at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Alliance.&nbsp;

In 1971 Merlin and his family moved to Hyannis where he began his career with the Consolidated Telephone Company.&nbsp; After 39 dedicated years he retired in December 2010.&nbsp;

While living in Hyannis, Merlin was actively involved by serving for numerous years on the Village Board including many terms as chairman.&nbsp; He was an active member of the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church which he helped build and maintain.&nbsp; He also served on the Hyannis Area Community Foundation Fund and the Cow Country Health Foundation extensively raising funds for the medical clinic in Hyannis.

He is survived by his wife, Toni, his daughters, Kimberli (Arthur) Escalera of Scottsbluff, Shonda (Mark) Sheets of Alliance, Mitzi (Peter) Lenz of Lincoln and Merla Heuertz of Oklahoma City, his grandchildren, Erin Lenz, Tyler Lenz, Kayla Sheets, Jaden Heuertz, Jalyn Heuertz and Jevon Heuertz.&nbsp; He is also survived by his sister, June Thompson of Kansas and his nieces and nephews.

His parents, his brother, Virgil and his wife, Betty, his brother-in-law, Jack Thompson, and in-laws, Don and Joy Carpenter preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be Saturday, August 21 at 10:00 a.m. at the Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Hyannis. The Reverend Richard C. Mueller will officiate. Burial will be in the Whitman Cemetery.&nbsp; A luncheon at the Hyannis church will follow the Whitman burial. Visitation will be Friday, Aug. 20 from 1-6 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Funeral Home.

Memorials may be given to the Grant County Rescue Service towards the new ambulance fund.

Merlin D. Ring (1941 - 2021)

Robert (Bob) LeRoy Walker, 98, passed away Thursday August 12, 2021 at Highland Park Care Center.&nbsp; He was born September 28, 1922 at Crawford, NE to William and Antoinette (Stiller) Walker.&nbsp;

On May 14, 1952 he was united in marriage to Betty Jean McKinney. After their marriage they lived on a farm south of Crawford before moving to Alliance in 1974.&nbsp; During his time here Bob served in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946.&nbsp; After moving to Alliance, he worked for Neil Colerick as a mechanic, until he started working for RMC (Railcar Maintenance) until he retired.&nbsp; He had many interests.&nbsp; He restored a Model A and Model T; loved going treasure hunting with his metal detector; loved hunting and fishing; loved his pet squirrels; and loved tinkering in his shop.

He is survived by his children, Joleen Noxon (Fred Vanis) of Dwight, NE, Connie (Doug) Doeschot of Panama, NE, Bobby (Athena) Walker of Alliance and Brian (Marlene) Walker of Crawford, NE, his 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his daughter, Debra Campbell, his sister, Jeannette Weidenhamer.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, August 18 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel with Reverend Gary Belk officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance.&nbsp; Visitation will be Tuesday, 1-5 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mary P. Steggs, 67, passed away July 31, 2021 from cancer at her daughter’s home in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was married to Stephen Steggs on July 8, 1977 in Alliance at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. They had met while both were in the U.S. Army at Fort Bliss, El Paso, TX in 1974.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Bridget (O’Neil) Mulhern, her brothers, James and John Mulhern, her granddaughter, Deonna Davis and her husband’s parents, Harold and Idelle (Dorshorst) Steggs.

She is survived by her husband, Stephen, their four children and grandchildren, son, Christopher and Kathe (Casey) Steggs and their children, Christian and Tyler Gunderson, Emily, Evan and Eric Steggs, son, Matthew and Tiffany (Oest) Steggs and their children, Jonathan, Stephen and Isabella Steggs, daughter, Linda Steggs Davis and Joe Dan Reed, and their children, Derrick and Drea Davis, son, Richard and Kristin (Opher) Steggs and their children, Haliegh, Thye and Alea Steggs.&nbsp; She is also survived by her siblings, Fran and Dianne Mulhern, Bridget and Jim Collins, Geraldine and Jim White, Michael and Laurie Mulhern and numerous nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She also leaves behind her dearest friends, Deb and Patrick Paul Snipes, Tammy and Juan Hernandez, Nancy Pumphrey, Sharon Lulow and Barb Cornette.

Mary P. Steggs, 67

Edward Anderson Wearin, Jr. (Andy) passed away August 5th, 2021 in Cheyenne, WY. 

Andy was born in 1948 in Council Bluffs, IA to Ed and Helen Wearin. He enjoyed growing up on the family farm in Red Oak, IA and working on the family ranch in Hyannis, NE in the summer where his love for horses, cattle, and roping blossomed. He attended prep school at Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire. He graduated from Colorado State University with a degree in Ag Business. Wearin managed the Prairie States Feedlot in Alliance, NE for 13 years before managing the Wearin Bros. Cattle Company in Hyannis, NE. 

Wearin married, Georgeann (Darden) Sheets in 2000. The couple enjoyed working on the ranch and raising her three sons, Tucker, Coy and Trey. After selling the ranch in 2012, Andy and Georgeann moved to Cheyenne, WY where they owned and operated the Riata Ranch Event Center. The couple relocated to Crowley, TX in 2019 to enjoy retirement. 

Wearin enjoyed steer roping, reading, travel, and following his kids and grandkids in all of their activities.  Andy was a kind man who loved to help others and was a true gentleman in every sense of the word. 

Wearin is survived by his wife of 21 years, Georgeann; three step-sons-Tucker (Melissa) Sheets and children, David and Lydia of Hyannis, NE; Coy (Mikaela) Sheets and children, Avery, Elsie and Lyle of Miles City, MT; Trey (LaTasha Wieferich) Sheets of Hyannis, NE; Sisters-Elizabeth Wearin and Sarah Wearin Smith of Red Oak, IA and Catherine Wearin of Cheyenne, WY;  numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, and friends.

Services for Andy Wearin will be held September 18th at 10AM at the Hyannis, NE High School with internment to follow at the Hyannis cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be sent to the Senior Steer Roping Association at P.O. Box 1653, Canyon, TX 79015 where a year end award will be presented in his honor for the sport he enjoyed so much.

Monte Lee Ball, 81, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2021, at Great Plains Health in North Platte, Nebraska. He was born May 28, 1940, in Sheridan, Wyoming to Walter J. and Beulah M. (Robinson) Ball.

After serving in the U.S. Army, Monte became a collector of experiences and treasures. He taught himself to play guitar and write songs. Never without a cup of coffee or a hand-rolled cigarette, young Monte traveled with the circus as an elephant handler, worked in the mines in South Dakota, and trapped mink and beaver in the Western Nebraska Sandhills. He enjoyed camping, fishing, panning for gold, and finding treasures with his metal detectors. He collected vintage bottles, antique tools, and wounded animals. We often brought home birds, ducks, kittens, turtles, and even snakes for rehabilitation and a little TLC.

Later in life, Monte began researching family history and became fascinated with his Celtic ancestry. He avidly read books on Irish history, listened to Celtic music, and studied Irish castles.

Monte is survived by his sisters, Judy Berry of North Platte, NE and Karen (Richard) Greenly of Douglas, WY, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, August 12, 2021 at 3:00 p.m. at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery at Alliance.

Stanley L. Behm, 76, of Alliance, passed away Sunday, August 8, 2021 at Highland Park Care Center.

Stanley was born on July 3, 1945 in Alliance, Nebraska to Leonard and Lily (Neilson) Behm. He grew up on the family farm in Alliance with his sister Violet. He attended Alliance High School where he met his future wife Anna L. Behm. He went on to attend Trade School at Milford, Nebraska. After graduating, he and Anna married and had three children together. He worked for Burlington Northern Railroad as a machinist until they purchased some land down the road from his parents and went into full time farming.&nbsp; Stanley took pride in working the land until he retired and fell ill in late 2016.&nbsp; He then moved to Highland Park Care Center where he spent his final years in the excellent care of their staff including Steph Moody who went out of her way to spoil him each time she worked.

He is survived by his daughter, Chanda Carney and husband, Jim of Aubrey, TX, son, Bryan Behm and wife DeeDee of Alliance, daughter, Amy Sims Auanger and husband, Larry of Fort Worth, TX; his grandchildren, Justin, Hannah, and Joseph Carney, Veronica Golden, Shayleen Baumann, and Kimberly Sims; great-grandchildren, Addi, Justin Jr. and Jax Carney, Blakelyn Golden, Dustin McMurray, Maelynn Foster; and sister Violet Yuill of Alliance.

Funeral services will be held Friday, August 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

Richard Stein, 81

Sheryl Lynn Buskirk, 64, passed away Friday, August 6, 2021 in her home surrounded by her family. She was born on February 20, 1957 in Rushville, Nebraska to Norman Lyle and Bonnie Jean (Tiensvold) Elwood.

On September 22, 1980, at the Box Butte County Courthouse, Sheryl was united in marriage to the love of her life and biggest supporter, Tracy Buskirk. Sheryl and Tracy lived in Alliance, Nebraska for the duration of their marriage where they raised their four children. Sheryl ran a busy daycare in her home for many years before retirement.

Sheryl was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Alliance. Her church family played a special part in her life and was such a comfort to her. She was also a member of the ladies bridge club in Alliance and always looked forward to playing each week.

Some of Sheryl and Tracy’s fondest memories of their life together are camping with their children. They loved to visit the Black Hills of South Dakota and spending time at the lake.

Sheryl never turned down a game of cards, loved a good football game, and enjoyed cooking and baking for her large family.

Sheryl’s lasting legacy will always be the love she had for her many grandchildren. She was truly their rock and their biggest fan. They had such a special place in her heart. She was a comforting soul who made everyone feel welcome in her home and also in her heart.

She is survived by her husband, Tracy Buskirk; her children, Dana (Ben) Bauer, Monica (Derrick Warfield) Febry, Brittany (Marco) Gonzalez and Cody (Stevi) Buskirk; her 23 grandchildren, and her siblings Susan Cook, Steve Elwood, Soni Palmer, Sindy Coburn, and Scott Elwood.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Shelli Smith.

A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, August 16, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Alliance with Pastor Gary Belk officiating. Inurnment will follow in the&nbsp; Alliance Cemetery. A Reception will follow at the Eagles Club at 1520 West 3rd&nbsp;Street in Alliance.

Sheryl Lynn Buskirk (1957 - 2021)

Doris Irene Doyle, 90, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, Nebraska.

Memorial services will be Friday, August 13 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.&nbsp; Interment will be in the Alliance Cemetery.

She was born on August 14, 1929 to Amos and Ethel (Diamond) Taylor, in Bingham, Nebraska, one of seven girls.&nbsp; She graduated from the Bingham High School.&nbsp; Doris met and fell in love with Harley Doyle and the couple was married on December 15, 1951, at the First Christian Church Parsonage during a raging snow storm. They were blessed with 63 loving years together. During their years together they welcomed with love three children, Joyce (Bruce) Lundy of Alliance, Earl (Gaylene) Doyle of Forest, Virginia and Dale ( Vickie) Doyle of Vermillion, Minnesota, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.

Doris was preceded in death by her husband Harley, her parents and her 6 sisters.

Doris was a devoted, loving and supportive wife and mother. She was a woman of faith, always willing to lend a helping hand. Doris was a member of the Alliance Methodist Church, Eagles Lady's Auxiliary, Golden Age Group, RSVP Group and Royal Neighbors of America.

 </figure>Doris Irene Doyle, 90, passed away Tuesday, March 31, 2020 at Highland Park Care Center in Alliance, Nebraska.Memorial services will be Friday, August 13 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel.&nbsp; Interment will be in the Alliance Cemetery.She was born on August 14, 1929 to Amos and Ethel (Diamond) Taylor, in Bingham, Nebraska, one of seven girls.&nbsp; She graduated from the Bingham High School.&nbsp; Doris met and fell in love with Harley Doyle and the couple was married on December 15, 1951, at the First Christian Church Parsonage during a raging snow storm. They were blessed with 63 loving years together. During their years together they welcomed with love three children, Joyce (Bruce) Lundy of Alliance, Earl (Gaylene) Doyle of Forest, Virginia and Dale ( Vickie) Doyle of Vermillion, Minnesota, 9 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.Doris was preceded in death by her husband Harley, her parents and her 6 sisters.Doris was a devoted, loving and supportive wife and mother. She was a woman of faith, always willing to lend a helping hand. It is common to start an obituary with the birthplace, significant dates, and history of a person’s life, but for Chester Paul Ansley those are not the important details. Chet’s important details are who he was, and how he lived his life. He was the salt of the earth, and a light in this world; he loved the Lord and his family fully, deeply, and with his whole heart. He was strength and stability, gentleness and kindness, service and humility. Chet had a glow with his presence and a softness in his voice, but he didn’t have to say a word for you to feel the love pouring out of him. Chet was a friend to everyone he met, and every person who knew him has a story of his kindness. Chet never hesitated to drop what he was doing to help anyone, and never expected anything in return. He was wise, welcoming, and of course funny- especially if you asked him! At home or church, while working on the ranch or in the community, whether talking to family or strangers, Chet was the exact same person. He was genuine in a way so few people are. He lived his life in a manner that made every person he knew feel like they were special to him- because they really were. His grandchildren stole his heart the minute they were born, and he loved each one in the perfect way. Each had one word to describe their Papa: selfless, compassionate, forgiving, wholesome, and playful. He was all those things and more, and the best husband, Dad, father-in-law, Papa, son, brother, uncle, and friend anyone could ever imagine. He always said, “I love you”. None of us who loved him will ever question his feelings for us.

Chet was born in Las Animas, Colorado on December 18, 1948 to Paul and Ethel (Larrew) Ansley. He grew up ranching with his parents and five brothers and sisters. Chet went to high school in Fairplay, Colorado, where he met Stephanie, his future wife and the absolute love of his life. Chet and Stephanie were married in 1967 the day after Chet’s 19th birthday and a month after Stephanie’s 18th birthday, in the middle of a Colorado blizzard! Chet loved Stephanie every, single day of their 53 years of marriage and never let a day go by without telling her. They were a team in many endeavors and experiences, the other half of each other, and always each other’s best friend. They attended Colorado State University together, where Chet enjoyed rodeoing as a steer roper and bulldogger and became a skilled farrier and horse trainer. Although Chet earned a degree in Agriculture Education and planned to be an Ag teacher, his heart called him to ranching. For 18 years he and Stephanie did just that on the K-4 Ranch east of Greeley, Colorado. During this time, Chet and Stephanie had two children, Amy and Justin, and became foster parents to their other two children, Yewobdar and Rebeka. The years in Colorado were precious, and the friendships that grew there were deep and lasting. In 1989, Chet and Stephanie purchased their own ranch and moved to Hemingford, Nebraska. Chet was an innovator and never stopped learning and working to improve his ranch. By doing so, he provided a wonderful life for his family, and leaves behind an amazing legacy in the ranch he built, as well as the family he raised and the friendships he created in Nebraska. Chet leaves behind his beloved wife, Stephanie; children, Amy (Dave) Jones, Justin (Reyna) Ansley, Yewobdar and Rebeka Sileshi; grandchildren Zayne and Gracie Jones, Taeller, John, and Kymberlee Ansley, Helena Titus and Makayla Bonnett; his mother, Ethel Ansley; sisters, Charlotte (the late Ron) Hansen, and Pam (Rick) Rucker; brothers, Rod (Sandy), Den (Rona), and Scott (Tawanna) Ansley; sisters-in-law, Suzanne (the late Kenneth) Eastham, and Melissa; many precious nieces, nephews and cousins and so many important friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Ansley. Chet’s family has no doubt that he is now with Jesus; his whole life proved the truth of God’s love and salvation. As much as we all wish with every breath we take that he wasn’t there yet, we are certain that the first words Chet said when he realized he was in heaven, were “Well, Praise the Lord!”

Chester Paul Ansley (1948 - 2021)

Frederick Raymond (Ray) Grantham passed away on Friday, July 30, 2021 after living independently for more than 95 years and a short time living at the Ponderosa Villa in Crawford, NE. 

Ray was the only child born on October 20, 1925 to Thomas Elam and Ida Elsie (Schmechel) Grantham in Hot Springs, SD. He attended Flag Butte and Rose Hill rural schools located in the Deadhorse community, graduated from Chadron High School and attended Chadron State College for one year before enlisting in the United States Army. He served in WWII in the 1st armored division tank destroyers in Germany, Austria and France from September 1944 to October 1946 when he returned to the family farm. 

He married Phyllis A. Burkhiser on August 20, 1947 living for a short time on a ranch near Pine Ridge, SD and another ranch in Whitney, NE before joining his parents Elam and Elsie on the home place along Deadhorse Creek southwest of Chadron in 1951. 

Ray and Phyllis were married for 53 years before her passing in October 2000. 

Ray spent his entire life farming and ranching raising cattle, sheep and hogs as well as a few years working construction on the Burkhiser complex on the CSC campus to earn extra income for the farm/ranch. He was inducted into the Dawes County Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1992 and his family received the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Awarded sponsored by the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben Foundation in 2010. It is one of the few family farms with original homestead owners left in Dawes County. 

Ray was very proud to serve his country remaining active in the leadership of the American Legion and American Legion Honor Guard. His history of service is recorded in the Library of Congress American Folklore Center in Washington, DC and was part of the WWII history project conducted by Chadron State College. Recently, he was very proud to receive one of the quilts presented by the Quilts of Valor Foundation honoring his service in WWII. 

He was an active member of the Grace Episcopal Church, Flag Butte Community Corporation and helped start the Happy Hustler’s 4-H Club along with Robert and Nellie Hawthorne in 1957. The club continues to this day after 64 years with three generations of the family continuing the legacy. Ray also served on the Dawes County 4-H Council and Dawes County Fair Board. 

Ray’s strong commitment to his faith, pride in his family and farming/ranching fulfilled his purpose in life. His hard work ethic, commitment to continuing the family farming/ranching operation, stubbornness, and ‘making do with what he had’ describe him as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. 

He is survived by three children, Connie Moore of Chadron, Kim (John) Madsen of rural Chadron, and Mark Grantham of Santa Monica, CA; grandchildren, Justin (Carey) Madsen of rural Chadron, Jennifer Madsen Smith of North Platte, Melissa (Bronc) Nicholson of Chadron, Rebecca Watson of Pearland, TX, Julie (Marty) Schommer of Oelrichs, SD, Russell Moore of Chadron, and step-grandchildren, Carey Jo Matthews of Kansas City, MO, Jacob Grantham of AZ. Ray felt very blessed to have the opportunity to enjoy thirteen great-grandchildren – Clay, Cody and Cole Madsen, Jarod and Julie Nicholson, Haley and Kasie Smith, Morgan and Roudy Schommer, William and Lauren Watson, Katelynn and Austin Reece - along with step great[1]grandchildren and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, of 53 years, parents and son-in-law, Pat Moore. A celebration of life will be held at a later time.

Frederick Raymond (Ray) Grantham (1925 - 2021)

Daniel Kurt,77 of Bridgeport,&nbsp; passed away Friday, July 30, 2021 at Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Daniel John Kurt was born March 26, 1944 in Independence, Iowa to Urban and Frances (Lasche)Kurt.&nbsp;&nbsp; He grew up on the family farm in rural Independence with his brother Richard Kurt (Mary Kurt) and his two sisters Eileen Kirby (Ray Kirby) and Roseanne Thoma (Ted Thoma).&nbsp; He graduated from Independence High School in 1963.&nbsp; He was a member of the National Guard from 1965 – 1971&nbsp; He married Peggy L Entwisle on May 5, 1966 in West Union, Iowa and started their life together in Independence, Iowa where they lived until 1969 when they moved to West Union, Iowa.&nbsp; In 1972 they moved to Edgewood, Iowa where he worked for Gremel’s&nbsp; Equipment. They moved to Bridgeport, Nebraska in 1977 where he went to work for Bridgeport Equipment then Alliance Tractor and finally Horizon West.&nbsp; They had three children: Theresa Korbelik (Bill Korbelik), Tamie Wick (Paul Wick) and Melissa Brennan (Lance Brennan).&nbsp; He sold Case International farm equipment for nearly 50 years until he retired in 2017.

Dan’s earlier hobbies included going on trail-rides and participating in horse shows and running the sled for tractor pulls.&nbsp; He then spent his time going to his children’s events.&nbsp; He never missed a sporting event, a cheerleading competition or a music program.&nbsp; He then happily traveled to watch his grandkids sporting events as well.&nbsp; He loved his dogs Booger and Babe and also had very entertaining names for them as well.&nbsp; He loved to feed the birds in the backyard and watch his squirrels eat their peanuts. He entertained his grandchildren with his colorful language and teaching them there is only one right way to do things and that was Dano’s way.&nbsp; He was most proud of his grandchildren: Rochelle Konrade (Carson Konrade), Hunter Wick, Danielle Wilkinson (Gus Wilkinson), Mikayla Boyce, Whitney Smith (Ethan Smith), Brody Brennan (Haley Hoxworth) and Harley Wick and his great grandchildren, Elliana Zabalza, Carter Konrade and Delaney Konrade.

He was a huge Nebraska Cornhusker fan.&nbsp; He especially loved the Cornhusker Volleyball Team but enjoyed watching all their women’s teams compete.&nbsp; If he couldn’t watch live then he recorded their games and shared with mom who only liked to watch if they won.&nbsp;&nbsp; He spent his retired years prairie dog hunting and having coffee with the locals.

&nbsp; He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Richard and his sister Eileen, sisters-in-law Sherry Ellen Entwisle, Linda Weltzin, Nancy Nagel, and Janet Entwisle.&nbsp; He is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, sister Roseanne Thoma (Ted Thoma) and brothers-in-law Jim Entwisle, Mark Entwisle, Dennis Entwisle (Chris Entwisle) Roger Weltzin, Ray Kirby; sisters-in-law Merilee Kleppe (Arnold Kleppe), Julie Zentz (David Zentz), Diane Nagel (Myron Nagel) and Mary Kurt step grandchildren Justin Korbelik, Kaylee Dunning, and Steven Korbelik; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Daniel John Kurt (1944 - 2021)

Falla Jo Sanders, 66, passed away Saturday, July 24, 2021 at her home in Alliance.

She was born January 9, 1955 at Covington, TN to Fallon and Ophelia (Goode) Craig.&nbsp; On June 9, 1973 she was united in marriage to Robert K. Sanders. The couple moved to Alliance in January 2016.&nbsp; While here, Falla worked as a registered nurse for Chadron Home Health Care until she retired.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, her son, Richard Sanders of Alliance and her daughter, Kristina Sanders of Alliance and her two grandchildren, Gabriel Sanders and Abigael Sanders.&nbsp; She is also survived by her sisters, Nancy Sherrill of Mississippi and Judy Nason, Bobbi Daniel, Ann Carter and Kay Privett all of Tennessee.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jimmy Craig and her sister, Janis Walker.

Falla Jo Sanders (1955 - 2021)

Larry was born on February 19, 1951 and was the first born child of L. Wayne and Darlene Brewer in Wichita Kansas. He graduated from Bishop Carrol Catholic High School in Wichita and attended Wichita State University. He worked for Boeing Aircraft in Wichita and transferred to the Boeing Space Program in Huntsville, AL in 1989. He also worked on various projects as a contractor in Washington State, Virginia, Florida, and South Carolina. He most recently moved to Ash Flat, AR in retirement to be close to his grandchildren and raise cattle. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Highland, AR. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, photography, Alabama football, and Wichita State men’s basketball among other local high school sports. He loved his family and was deeply interested in his family genealogy, and enjoyed attending biennial Prochazka family reunions in Hemingford, NE.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lowell Wayne and Darlene Marie (Prochazka) Brewer. Larry is survived by his children,&nbsp; Matthew Brewer (Ulandi) of Hardy, AR and their five children, Jenna Staggs (Parker) of Cache, OK, and Angie (Ryon) Dimitrov of Goodspring, TN; his siblings Douglas Brewer (Cherry) of Macon, GA; Gregory Brewer (Cheryl) of Macon, GA and Cheryl Brewer Turner (Randall) of San Antonio, TX along with 4 nieces and 2 nephews.

Larry Brewer (1951 - 2021)

John Allan Moore, 78, died May 15, 2020 at Deadwood, SD, from Myelofibrosis, a rare blood cancer.

Memorial services will be Saturday, July 31 at 11:00 a.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Alliance.&nbsp; A luncheon will follow at the Alliance Eagles Club.

John was born in Alliance, NE on August 10, 1941 to George W. and Dorothy (Fitzgerald) Moore.&nbsp; He grew up and attended school in Alliance, graduating in 1959.&nbsp; He lettered four years in football for Alliance High School.&nbsp; He was named to various all-conference teams during his sophomore, junior, and senior years.&nbsp; The Associated Press selected John as a first team tackle on their 1959 All-State Team.&nbsp; He played in the very first North-South Shrine Bowl game in Omaha in 1959.

He attended the University of Kansas on a football scholarship 1959-60.&nbsp; John then transferred to Doane College in Crete, NE in 1960.&nbsp; He played football two seasons for the Doane Tigers.&nbsp; John was selected first team All-Nebraska College Conference football team in both the 1961 and 1962 seasons.&nbsp; He was named Homecoming King his junior year.

In 1963 John entered the US Army and was honorably discharged in 1965.&nbsp; Following his time in the service, he attended Chadron State College earning three degrees: Bachelor of Arts (1967), Bachelor of Science (1968), and Master of Science in Education (1974).

John married Micki Jeanne Banjoff of Alliance on September 10, 1966.&nbsp; They lived in Chadron, NE while each pursued their college degrees and moved to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in 1969 to teach at Oglala Community High School (later known as Pine Ridge High School).&nbsp; Both retired from Pine Ridge: John in 1995; Micki in 2004.

Teaching in Pine Ridge was a very rewarding experience and a source of pride for John.&nbsp; During his career he was voted Teacher of the Year multiple times by the students; awarded monetary bonuses for exemplary work; earned excellent evaluations from his administrators; and commendations from the school board. His most cherished honor came during graduation ceremonies in 1995 when, in appreciation, he was presented with a full-sized flag of the Oglala Lakota Nation by the Oglala Tribal Education Committee.

After retirement, John enjoyed traveling to some of those places he had taught about in Geography classes. He took thirty international trips, mostly small-group nature tours to Asia, Africa, and South America. He had traveled through much of Europe prior to his retirement.

John felt very fortunate to have seen and experience some of the world’s noteworthy attractions. He climbed on the Great Wall of China and saw the Terra Cotta Soldiers of Xian, swam next to humpback whales in the Silver Banks of the Dominican Republic and petted a gray whale in Magdalena Bay, Mexico. John rode elephants to photograph tigers in India and one-horned rhinoceros in Nepal, as well as going on three safaris to Africa. Also, he snorkeled among manatees in Florida, volunteered at Wolong Giant Panda Reserve in China, trekked Uganda’s Impenetrable Forest to observe mountain gorillas, and hiked all over Madagascar in search of lemurs. In Indonesia he encountered komodo dragons and orangutans. John toured Mesoamerica to see ancient monuments of the Aztec, Mayans, and Incas including Machu Picchu, Peru, and a stunning sunrise on the Temple of Tikal, Guatemala. He saw the Great Pyramids of Egypt and explored the Rose City of Petra, Jordan, in the Middle East. John wandered the captivating Durbar Squares of Katmandu and Pagan, Nepal and waited in freezing temperatures to see the sun rise on Mt. Everest, Tibet. He marveled at the architectural and ancient wonders of Asia; Angkor Wat in Cambodia; Borobudur in Indonesia; the Taj Mahal of Agra, India; the Grand Palace of Bangkok, Thailand; Potala Palace in Lasha, Burma. Closer to home, John took several camping trips to the great parks of Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Utah, Idaho, and Arizona.

Following Micki’s retirement in 2004, they moved to Lead, SD to enjoy the Black Hills and the nearby Deadwood casinos. Although not a great gambler, he did win a car at the Silverado Casino. John very much enjoyed playing bridge with his partner, Micki, in both Lead and Spearfish bridge clubs.

John is survived by his wife, Micki, of Lead; sister, Mary Jo Lemons, of Kemp, TX; a niece, nephew, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Vance Retzlaff, 63, of Chadron, passed away in an accident near Hemingford on Friday, July 16, 2021.

He was born September 23, 1957 in Rushville, NE to Robert and Lois (Evans) Retzlaff.

Vance was a diesel mechanic specializing in tractor repair and operated his own shop. In addition to being a talented mechanic, Vance was an avid motorcycle rider who started riding at a young age. He participated in many motocross and enduro races as a young man. He also loved the outdoors, camping and touring on his motorcycle. He is remembered as a free spirited, hardworking man who overcame many of life's toughest challenges ".

He is survived by the love of his life of over 20 years, Donna DeCoste of Chadron, his and her children, Joshua (Angie) Garner of Torrington, WY, Jarvis Garner of Gering, Maisie (Josh) Petering of Alliance, Danielle (Ionon) Kathol and Joshua (Paula) Kathol of Chadron, his grandchildren, Nakisha Garner, Gavin Garner, Nakalyn Garner, Zoee Knaub, Jazlyn Garner, Madeline Garner, Josie Petering, Max Petering, Garner Petering, Marika Petering, Jsean Lamb, Devon Youngman, Makaelyn Youngman, Jerome Kathol and Astro Harris and his great-grandchildren, Tavin and Asher. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary (Ron) Shedeed of Clinton, Marla (Pat) DeMars of Spokane, WA and his brother, Verlin (Lori) Retzlaff of Chadron.

Dorothy Edith McCracken, 98, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Highland Park Care Center.

She was born on November 30, 1922 at Clinton, NE to Earl and Edith (Flowers) Dennon.&nbsp;

On August 29, 1943 she was united in marriage to David McCracken at the Alliance Air Base.&nbsp; This was just before he was deployed overseas to the European Theater during WWII.

She is survived by her children, Larry and Juanita McCracken, Jerry and Joyce McCracken and Peggy McCracken.&nbsp; She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Russell Dennon.

Dorothy was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Eagles Auxiliary and was proud of being a Covid survivor.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery with Father Matt Koperski officiating.

Dorothy Edith McCracken (1922 - 2021)

On Thursday, July 15, 2021, Richard (Dick) Gayle Marsteller passed away at the age of 87 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. 

Dick was born on May 8, 1934 in Harrison, Nebraska to John Wesley and Helen Irene (Unitt) Marsteller. In 2nd Grade, during World War II, Dick began moving between Colorado and Utah where his father worked Construction as an Electrician. Dick was 7 years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed. The family settled back in Harrison where John built and ran the Texaco station and artifact museum on HWY 20. In 7th grade, Dick was proud of the fact that he was given the 8th grade test, passed and moved right into 9 th grade. He was passionate about sports which reflected with his high school football career as a Running Back for Sioux County High School scoring 52 touchdowns. He played high school basketball and town leagues for both basketball and baseball. In 1980 and early 1990's he enjoyed pitching for the town team Softball league. He was also a member of the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department. Growing up, Dick and his brother, Johnny, could always be found either mastering their falconry or hunting and fishing. After graduation, he worked for Sioux County as a road maintainer. After the passing of his Brother Johnny in 1968, Richard took over Johnny's business with Standard Oil-Amoco as a bulk-fuel distributor. Around 1993, Richard sold the business to Eberspecher Oil Company at which time he went back to work for Sioux County road maintenance. 

At the young age of 70, Richard fully retired where he continued to enjoy golfing with many friends from the community and his Nephew Scott. Every Saturday in the fall you could find him cheering on his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers. Weekday mornings at 10:00 AM he would enjoy community coffee and catching up on the latest news. 

Dick is preceded in death by his twin sisters, his parents, brother Johnny, sister in law Flossie, nephew Mark, great nephew Robby, Rose Marsteller and numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. He is survived by his Son, David J. Marsteller (Debra); Daughter, Sandy Hesse (Paul) and three step-children; Richard E. Bridge, Christal Wickstrom (Kevin) and Kimberly Jaeger (Klaus). He has 10 Grandchildren; Stephanie Moore (Justin), Lance Pruitt (Megan), Reagan and Bennett Hesse, Lindsay Hofer (Mitch), Nathan and Andrew Bridge, Kaci Wickstrom, Michael Jaeger (Kayla), Nicholas Jaeger and 6 Great Grandchildren; Parker, Ryan and Alex Hofer, Kristen Bridge, Lucas Jaeger and Adeline Acuna.

Richard "Dick" Marsteller (1934 - 2021)

Alan Ullrich’s charismatic character warmed and delivered joy to those around him. He never ceased to entertain and remind those around him that the value of life arrives with family and fun times. Most importantly, Alan chose to live by both action and word. Although he is dubbed ‘The King’ by those closest to him, Alan altruistically admired others and Earth’s beauty foremost. He enjoyed the views of campgrounds, traveling around the world to scuba dive, teaching his grandchildren ‘the best’ grill recipes, loving his two dogs: Conan and Flash, and storytelling his most memorable moments with those he loves to others. His drive to seek and enjoy the world around him did not stop with just family, friends, and vacations. 

Alan’s work as a BNSF Railroad Engineer for 40 years allowed him to trek along the tracks and admire the landscape, cities, and towns of Nebraska and America’s countryside. Watching the trees glaze by while having his hands on the gears of the train is where he found his second home. But those who knew Alan will understand this: he created a home for himself and everyone around him regardless of the location. Now his new home is in the afterlife. Alan Ullrich’s journey on Earth was completed as he passed away on July 12, 2021, at the age of 61. 

Even in his final moments, he was surrounded by family bedside with a memorable bonfire the night he passed. 

Alan is survived by his father Arthur Ullrich of Crawford, NE, his sisters Roxanne and Hayley, his brothers John, Artie, and Steve, his daughters Ceyonne and Rachel, and his grandchildren Jacob, William, and Olivia. Alan was preceded in death by his mother Delores and his granddaughter Isabella. Memorial Services will be held at the Neptune Memorial Reef in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Although he is dubbed ‘The King’ by those closest to him, Alan altruistically admired others and Earth’s beauty foremost.
