Vance Retzlaff, 63, of Chadron, passed away in an accident near Hemingford on Friday, July 16, 2021.

He was born September 23, 1957 in Rushville, NE to Robert and Lois (Evans) Retzlaff.

Vance was a diesel mechanic specializing in tractor repair and operated his own shop. In addition to being a talented mechanic, Vance was an avid motorcycle rider who started riding at a young age. He participated in many motocross and enduro races as a young man. He also loved the outdoors, camping and touring on his motorcycle. He is remembered as a free spirited, hardworking man who overcame many of life's toughest challenges ".

He is survived by the love of his life of over 20 years, Donna DeCoste of Chadron, his and her children, Joshua (Angie) Garner of Torrington, WY, Jarvis Garner of Gering, Maisie (Josh) Petering of Alliance, Danielle (Ionon) Kathol and Joshua (Paula) Kathol of Chadron, his grandchildren, Nakisha Garner, Gavin Garner, Nakalyn Garner, Zoee Knaub, Jazlyn Garner, Madeline Garner, Josie Petering, Max Petering, Garner Petering, Marika Petering, Jsean Lamb, Devon Youngman, Makaelyn Youngman, Jerome Kathol and Astro Harris and his great-grandchildren, Tavin and Asher. He is also survived by his sisters, Mary (Ron) Shedeed of Clinton, Marla (Pat) DeMars of Spokane, WA and his brother, Verlin (Lori) Retzlaff of Chadron.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.

Dorothy Edith McCracken, 98, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at Highland Park Care Center.

She was born on November 30, 1922 at Clinton, NE to Earl and Edith (Flowers) Dennon.&nbsp;

On August 29, 1943 she was united in marriage to David McCracken at the Alliance Air Base.&nbsp; This was just before he was deployed overseas to the European Theater during WWII.

She is survived by her children, Larry and Juanita McCracken, Jerry and Joyce McCracken and Peggy McCracken.&nbsp; She is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother, Russell Dennon.

Dorothy was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church and the Eagles Auxiliary and was proud of being a Covid survivor.

Graveside services will be Wednesday, July 28 at 10:30 a.m. at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery with Father Matt Koperski officiating.

Dorothy Edith McCracken (1922 - 2021)

On Thursday, July 15, 2021, Richard (Dick) Gayle Marsteller passed away at the age of 87 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. 

Dick was born on May 8, 1934 in Harrison, Nebraska to John Wesley and Helen Irene (Unitt) Marsteller. In 2nd Grade, during World War II, Dick began moving between Colorado and Utah where his father worked Construction as an Electrician. Dick was 7 years old when Pearl Harbor was bombed. The family settled back in Harrison where John built and ran the Texaco station and artifact museum on HWY 20. In 7th grade, Dick was proud of the fact that he was given the 8th grade test, passed and moved right into 9 th grade. He was passionate about sports which reflected with his high school football career as a Running Back for Sioux County High School scoring 52 touchdowns. He played high school basketball and town leagues for both basketball and baseball. In 1980 and early 1990's he enjoyed pitching for the town team Softball league. He was also a member of the Harrison Volunteer Fire Department. Growing up, Dick and his brother, Johnny, could always be found either mastering their falconry or hunting and fishing. After graduation, he worked for Sioux County as a road maintainer. After the passing of his Brother Johnny in 1968, Richard took over Johnny's business with Standard Oil-Amoco as a bulk-fuel distributor. Around 1993, Richard sold the business to Eberspecher Oil Company at which time he went back to work for Sioux County road maintenance. 

At the young age of 70, Richard fully retired where he continued to enjoy golfing with many friends from the community and his Nephew Scott. Every Saturday in the fall you could find him cheering on his beloved Nebraska Cornhuskers. Weekday mornings at 10:00 AM he would enjoy community coffee and catching up on the latest news. 

Dick is preceded in death by his twin sisters, his parents, brother Johnny, sister in law Flossie, nephew Mark, great nephew Robby, Rose Marsteller and numerous Aunts, Uncles and Cousins. He is survived by his Son, David J. Marsteller (Debra); Daughter, Sandy Hesse (Paul) and three step-children; Richard E. Bridge, Christal Wickstrom (Kevin) and Kimberly Jaeger (Klaus). He has 10 Grandchildren; Stephanie Moore (Justin), Lance Pruitt (Megan), Reagan and Bennett Hesse, Lindsay Hofer (Mitch), Nathan and Andrew Bridge, Kaci Wickstrom, Michael Jaeger (Kayla), Nicholas Jaeger and 6 Great Grandchildren; Parker, Ryan and Alex Hofer, Kristen Bridge, Lucas Jaeger and Adeline Acuna.

Richard "Dick" Marsteller (1934 - 2021)

Alan Ullrich’s charismatic character warmed and delivered joy to those around him. He never ceased to entertain and remind those around him that the value of life arrives with family and fun times. Most importantly, Alan chose to live by both action and word. Although he is dubbed ‘The King’ by those closest to him, Alan altruistically admired others and Earth’s beauty foremost. He enjoyed the views of campgrounds, traveling around the world to scuba dive, teaching his grandchildren ‘the best’ grill recipes, loving his two dogs: Conan and Flash, and storytelling his most memorable moments with those he loves to others. His drive to seek and enjoy the world around him did not stop with just family, friends, and vacations. 

Alan’s work as a BNSF Railroad Engineer for 40 years allowed him to trek along the tracks and admire the landscape, cities, and towns of Nebraska and America’s countryside. Watching the trees glaze by while having his hands on the gears of the train is where he found his second home. But those who knew Alan will understand this: he created a home for himself and everyone around him regardless of the location. Now his new home is in the afterlife. Alan Ullrich’s journey on Earth was completed as he passed away on July 12, 2021, at the age of 61. 

Even in his final moments, he was surrounded by family bedside with a memorable bonfire the night he passed. 

Alan is survived by his father Arthur Ullrich of Crawford, NE, his sisters Roxanne and Hayley, his brothers John, Artie, and Steve, his daughters Ceyonne and Rachel, and his grandchildren Jacob, William, and Olivia. Alan was preceded in death by his mother Delores and his granddaughter Isabella. Memorial Services will be held at the Neptune Memorial Reef in Key Biscayne, Florida.

Agnes Madlene Burton, 76 of Hay Springs, NE passed away Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Country Side Care in Gordon, NE.

She was born on May 6, 1945 on a farm at Creston,&nbsp; Iowa to James and Mary (Dant) Garrity.&nbsp;&nbsp; She was united in marriage to Harold Burton on May 25, 1990.&nbsp; She worked for 9 years for the University of Nebraska in the Registrar’s Office while she and Harold lived in Firth.&nbsp; In 1997 they purchased a ranch north of Hay Springs which they operated until Harold’s passing away in 2012. Together they enjoyed dancing and golf.&nbsp; Agnes was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed her membership in quilting clubs and reading.

She was preceded in death by husband, Harold, her parents and numerous brothers and sisters.

Graveside services will be Thursday, July 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the Bingham Cemetery with Pastor Roy Monahan officiating.

George Lee Wickham, 87, passed away Saturday, July 10, 2021 at Box Butte General Hospital.

He was born July 30, 1933 at Bingham, NE to Ralph and Iva Mae (Sellers) Wickham.

George enlisted into the U.S. Air Force in 1953. He would serve for 20 years before being honorably discharged in 1973.&nbsp;

On October 16, 1956 he was united in marriage to the love of his life, Carol June Wyland in Topeka, KS. There their first child, Michael was born, and then came Tamela born in Alliance in 1960.&nbsp; Terry would be born in Blytheville, AR in 1961. Tonya was born in 1969 in Minot, ND.&nbsp; Then a surprise when twin boys, Timothy and John were born in Banbury, England in 1972 completing their family.

Following his retirement from the Air Force, George worked for Cargill and Co-op for many years.&nbsp; He was a member of the American Legion and V.F.W.

He is survived by his children, Michael (Angela) Wickham, Tamela Wickham (Doug Jerke), Terry (Roger) Kotshwar all of Alliance, Tim Wickham of Denver and John (Penny) Wickham of Alliance.&nbsp; He is also survived by 14 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.&nbsp; He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Carol, his daughter, Tonya Mracek, his granddaughter, Brittney Shaver and his brothers, Dev, Joe and Garland “Bud” Wickham.

Memorial services will be Thursday, July 15 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bates-Gould Chapel in Alliance with Mr. Tom Serres officiating.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Hemingford Cemetery with military honors.

George Lee Wickham (1933 - 2021)

Ronald L. Burke joined his heavenly home on Thursday, July 8, 2021, at his home in Chadron, Nebraska. 

Ron was born on January 17, 1942 to Freda and Roy Burke in Sand Fork, West Virginia. He graduated from Sand Fork High School in 1959. He continued his education and received his bachelors and masters of arts degrees from West Virginia University. Ron then earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from the University of Minnesota. Prior to moving to Chadron in 1987 Ron taught at Glenville State College in West Virginia and Montana State University in Bozeman. During his tenure at Chadron State College, he taught economics, finance, and various agriculture courses for 23 years. 

Ron served on several committees and organizations. In 1991 he was recognized with the Nebraska State Board Teacher Excellence Award. One of his favorite assignments was student participation in the Stock Market Game and many students can still recall the “Definition of Economics.” Although teaching was his main priority, it was the personal relationships with his students that he found truly rewarding. While at the University of Minnesota he met his future bride, Mary Jane Johnson. They were united in marriage on June 14, 1969. Of this union three children were born, Andrew Dean, Robert Jason, and Melissa Fae. The most important part of his family were his wife, children and grandchildren, the loves of his life. 

Ron is survived by his wife Mary; three children, Andrew Burke of Laramie, Wyoming, Robert (Jill) Burke along with their two children Kaylie and Brayden Burke of Brookings, South Dakota, Melissa Burke along with her daughter Anika Burke of Chadron, Nebraska; brother Richard (Mildred) Burke of Sand Fork, West Virginia; nieces Diane (Mike) Hatton of Sugarland, Texas, Sue Burke of Weston, West Virginia, Deana Burke of Sand Fork, West Virginia and several great nieces and nephews.

 Ron is preceded in death by his mother Freda B. Brown Burke, father Roy H. Burke, brothers Robert H. Burke and Billy B. Burke; nephews Andrew and Matthew McHenry. 

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Chadron, Nebraska at 10:00 am. A visitation will also be held Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church from 5:00-7:00 pm.

Ron is survived by his wife Mary; three children, Andrew Burke of Laramie, Wyoming, Robert (Jill) Burke along with their two children Kaylie and Brayden Burke of Brookings, South Dakota, Melissa Burke along with her daughter Anika Burke of Chadron, Nebraska; brother Richard (Mildred) Burke of Sand Fork, West Virginia; nieces Diane (Mike) Hatton of Sugarland, Texas, Sue Burke of Weston, West Virginia, Deana Burke of Sand Fork, West Virginia and several great nieces and nephews. Ron is preceded in death by his mother Freda B. Brown Burke, father Roy H. Burke, brothers Robert H. Burke and Billy B. Burke; nephews Andrew and Matthew McHenry. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 12, 2021 at Our Saviors Lutheran Church in Chadron, Nebraska at 10:00 am. Ronald L. Burke (1942 - 2021)

Marc Gordon Gering was born March 13, 1956 in Rushville, Nebraska.

He was the 6th of nine children born to Patricia “Pat” and Dale Gering. Marc enjoyed playing sports from the time he was a young child in Hay Springs through his adult years. He was a fearless competitor, an avid fan of all types of sports and a formidable card-shark. After graduating from Hay Springs High School in 1974, Marc joined the US Army. 

On March 23rd, 1975, he married Marie Pieper and they moved to Fort Sill in Lawton, Oklahoma, where their first child was born. After his army service ended, the family moved to Kearney, Nebraska, where they welcomed three more children over the years. Marc received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Kearney State College. He worked at Eaton Corporation for several years. Marc moved to Cheyenne Wyoming where he managed Winnelson Plumbing. Marc spent the last several years in Chadron Nebraska. 

Marc was a sharp-witted, intelligent, well-read person who could answer most all of the questions on any given episode of Jeopardy. Sarcasm was a well-crafted art form for Marc and he could make you laugh or cry with his one-liners. 

Marc passed away at his home in Chadron. He was proceeded in death by his father, Dale Gering, brothers, Chuck and Doug, brother-in-law Tim Heiting and nieces Nikki and Kami Koinzan. Marc is survived by his children and their families: Megan (Brian Edwards), Marcus Gering, Mia (Elijah) Hogins, and Macs (Jessie) Gering; his grandchildren: Lucy and Henry Edwards, Charlotte, Amelia, and Elena Hogins, and Lucas, Vivian, and Emma Gering. Marc is also survived by his mother, Pat Gering of Hay Springs and his siblings, Cretia (Dave) Hadley, Cinda (Dennis) Koinzan, Brad (Debbie) Gering, Mike (Jennifer) Gering, Lori (Tim) McClaren, Troy (John Gribble) Gering, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families. 

Those who love Marc are thankful he is now at peace but will miss him forever. His family is planning a memorial service on August 27th @ 3:00 p.m. at the Hay Springs cemetery.

Peggy S. Carr, 74, died Sunday, July 11, 2021 at Box Butte General Hospital.

Peggy was born October 11, 1946 in Page, Nebraska to Harold L. and Margaret I. (Carson) Kelly.

She married James L. Carr on May 2, 1965 at the United Methodist Church in Page, Nebraska.

She and Jim moved to Alliance in 1979 where Peggy worked as a beautician at the Magic Mirror before later working at and purchasing the Towers Beauty Salon in Alliance.&nbsp; Peggy operated the shop until the Towers closing and later went on to again work at the Magic Mirror until her retirement.

Peggy gave her life to the Lord.&nbsp; She was a faithful and active member of the United Methodist Church where she served in various capacities. &nbsp;She especially loved her family and friends and was always there to lend a hand or kind word.&nbsp; She loved taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren out for treats and video chatting with them.&nbsp; She also enjoyed scrapbooking.&nbsp; She was a member of the Box Butte General Hospital Auxiliary and often volunteered in the hospital gift shop.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Carr of Alliance; her children, Cathy and Steve Rabender of Gering and Mike and Kim Carr of Alliance; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.&nbsp; She was preceded in death by her parents, 2 sisters, 1 brother and 1 great-grandson.

A Celebration of Peggy’s life will be held Friday, July 16, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. at the United Methodist Church.&nbsp; Pastor Gideon Achi and Jeanie Sedivy will officiate.&nbsp; Inurnment will follow in the United Methodist Church Columbarium.&nbsp; Friends may watch a livestream of the service on the church Facebook page, Celebrations of Life at Alliance UMC.

Peggy S. Carr (1946 - 2021)

Our mother Betty passed away July 5th in Fort Collins, Colorado, after a well fought battle with dementia; secure in the love of her family. She was born in Scottsbluff, Nebraska December 22, 1932, to Beulah and Morris Prouty.

She grew up and lived in the Alliance, Nebraska area and that is where her heart remained even after she moved to Colorado. In 1949 she married Emery Dempsey and to that union 5 children were born and raised. She had a passion for cleaning everything with bleach until it shined, be it the windows, floors or even her children! Her trademark article of clothing, which ironically she was wearing when she passed, was a white, round collar blouse.

She came to an accurate knowledge of the Bible and dedicated her life to her God and was baptized as one of Jehovah’s witnesses in 1952. She enjoyed sharing her faith with others. Down to her last hours she found comfort in hearing the Scriptures read to her.

Following the death of our dad Emery, she married William Benton. Upon his passing she moved to Colorado to be closer to her family.

She was preceded in death by husbands Emery Dempsey and William Benton, one son, Larry Dempsey, her parents, one brother and 3 sisters. Surviving Betty are her children, Kathy (John) Kampbell of Omaha, Nebraska, William (Kathy) Dempsey of Charlotte, North Carolina, Karen (Kevin) Meyers and Rhonda (Dave) Ebel of Laporte, Colorado. Also, her sister Marjorie Prouty of Peoria Heights, Illinois and brother Leo (JR) Tritle of Scottsbluff, Nebraska, 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.

Mom died with faith in the promise that she would be in Jehovah God’s memory and soon the promises of Revelation 21:3,4 would be a reality, when she would be brought back to life on a Paradise Earth to be reunited with those she loved.

Betty Benton (1932 - 2021)

A memorial service for Rita Wigington, of Chadron, Nebraska, will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2021 at 1:00 PM at Chamberlain Chapel in Chadron, Nebraska. A burial will follow at a later date at Black Hills National Cemetery in Sturgis, South Dakota.

Rita Wigington of Chadron, Nebraska passed away at Chadron Community Hospital on July 1, 2021, with family and friends by her side, at the age of 82. 

Rita was born Rita Louise Justus on January 2, 1939, in Huron, South Dakota to Vernon and Zelda Justus. She graduated from Huron High School where, among her many activities, she was the Head Drum Majorette leading the Huron High School marching band in many parades and competitions. She later attended Huron College. Rita was an accomplished dancer and competed in dance competitions throughout the Midwest. Later she turned her talents to dance instruction and chorography. Her passion for dance remained with her throughout her life. 

In 1960 Rita was married to William (Bill) Wigington, who, after his discharge from active duty in the United States Air Force, was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in Huron. In 1961 a son Kyle was born and in 1964 daughter Kayleen followed. In 1969 the family moved from Huron to Chadron, Nebraska where Rita resided until her death. 

During her life Rita was involved with a multitude of interests and activities. She remained connected with her dance background by serving as a pageant coach and judge in competitions held throughout the Nebraska panhandle. Rita was also an avid and accomplished bowler participating in numerous state and national tournaments throughout the years. Rita will be remembered most for being a loving wife, the best mother two children could ever wish for, the personification of what a grandmother should be to two grandsons, and the greatest sister that could be imagined. Besides her devotion to family, she was a fierce, fun, and devoted friend to all that were lucky enough to have called her friend.

 Rita is survived by her husband of 61 years William (Bill) Wigington of Chadron, Nebraska, son Kyle Wigington (Sherry) of Concan, Texas, daughter Kayleen Krolikowski (Dan) of Deadwood, South Dakota, sister Barb McKitchen of Chadron, Nebraska, grandson Dustin Hall of Deadwood, South Dakota, grandson Kit Wigington of Colorado Springs, Colorado, and niece Lisa Hastings of Rapid City, South Dakota.

Beverly Dell Crownover of Hemingford, Nebraska passed away in the early morning hours of June 30, 2021 at the Hemingford Community Care Center. She was born in Thedford, Nebraska on February 16, 1932 to Samuel and Irma Fodge. Beverly devoted her life to her family, her church, and God.

She is preceded in death by her first husband, William Frederick Bremer, and her second husband, Robert John Crownover. She is survived by sons Bruce (Anne) Bremer, of East Hartford, CT and Eric (Serena) Bremer of Alliance, Nebraska. Beverly was a well-loved grandmother of Heather (Sean) Hall of Roca, NE and Heath (Jessie) Bremer of Seward, NE, as well as Jon Marquez of Lincoln, NE and Daniel Marquez of Lincoln, NE.&nbsp; Beverly was also blessed with six great-grandchildren, Eric and Maxim Hall, Holden, Brayden, Easten and Emersen Bremer.

She began her service as the organist for Hemingford United Methodist Church while pregnant with her eldest son, Bruce Bremer. Three years later, she gave birth to a second son, Eric Bremer. Beverly carried both of her sons to church before she carried them to term.

Beverly was a devoted wife of William F. Bremer until his death in 1970. In 1975, she married Robert J. Crownover, DDS and learned to be his dental assistant. She accompanied her husband on several dental missions to Grenada providing badly needed dental care to that country's most impoverished.

Not content with mere dental missions, she became a regular speaker at the Walk to Emmaus retreats where participants are encouraged to find ways to live out their individual call to discipleship in their home, church, and community. Beverly Crownover displayed a life of devotion to God and inspired her entire family to place their faith in Jesus Christ. She is the redeemed child of the King of Kings and, as such, is a princess. Her crown in Glory is bejeweled with the names of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and countless others who knew her and now claim the name of Jesus.

Godspeed, Beverly. You are free of the old earthly tent and will claim your new immortal, glorified body on that final day. Until then, you are "leaning on the Everlasting Arms" and gazing on His wonderful face.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday,&nbsp; August 7 at 1:00 P.M. at the United Methodist Church in Hemingford. A lunch will be served prior to the funeral starting at 11:30 A.M.

Beverly Dell Crownover (1932 - 2021)

John Hal Magnuson, 74, of Alliance, NE passed away on June 30, 2021 at the Medical Center of the Rockies, in Loveland, CO, with his wife of 49 years, Susan, at his side. 

John was born June 6, 1947 in Alliance, NE to Donald and June (Taylor) Magnuson. John spent his summers as a young boy in Mullen, NE with his Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. He started working for Frank Brennan when he turned 16 years old, working in the hayfield. He grew up in Alliance and graduated from Alliance High School in 1966. He attended Kearney State College until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1969. He served in the Army as a clerk for 2 years. 

Upon returning from the Army, he married Susan E. Henderson on February 5, 1972. One of John’s greatest adventures was attending state FFA Conventions with his children and the Hemingford FFA. He also enjoyed his time fishing and hunting with his children. John worked on the family ranch west of Alliance until his health required him to retire in 2014.

John is survived by his wife Susan of Alliance; Son Lance (Trisha) Magnuson of Gering; Daughter Sheri Woodworth of Alliance; Daughter Lori (Erik) Peterson of Gering; Daughter Sarah Magnuson-Meyer of Rushville; Son Blaine (Kaitlin) Magnuson of Torrington, WY; Daughter Julie (Tim) Lacy of Bayard; Daughter Kimberli Magnuson of Alliance; and Son Zachary (Annie Grant) Magnuson of Laramie, WY. Grandchildren Hadlee, Saydee and Eain Peterson; Ryggin Meyer; Jackson, Kristin and Gunnar Magnuson; Bayleigh Lacy; and Brynn Wadas. Brother Steve (Mary) Magnuson of Sheridan, WY; Brother in Law Rick (Betty) Henderson of Salina, KS; 1 niece and 3 nephews. He is also survived by his longtime faithful companion, his dog Red.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law Richard and Helen Henderson; Son Jacob Magnuson; Granddaughter Josephine Magnuson; and Son-in-Law Don Woodworth.

Services for John will be Friday July 9, 2021 at 10 AM at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance. Following inurnment, a lunch will be served at the VFW Hall in Alliance at 12 PM.  </figure>John Hal Magnuson, 74, of Alliance, NE passed away on June 30, 2021 at the Medical Center of the Rockies, in Loveland, CO, with his wife of 49 years, Susan, at his side. John was born June 6, 1947 in Alliance, NE to Donald and June (Taylor) Magnuson. John spent his summers as a young boy in Mullen, NE with his Aunts, Uncles, and Cousins. He started working for Frank Brennan when he turned 16 years old, working in the hayfield. He grew up in Alliance and graduated from Alliance High School in 1966. He attended Kearney State College until he was drafted into the United States Army in 1969. He served in the Army as a clerk for 2 years. Upon returning from the Army, he married Susan E. Henderson on February 5, 1972. One of John’s greatest adventures was attending state FFA Conventions with his children and the Hemingford FFA. He also enjoyed his time fishing and hunting with his children. John worked on the family ranch west of Alliance until his health required him to retire in 2014.John is survived by his wife Susan of Alliance; Son Lance (Trisha) Magnuson of Gering; Daughter Sheri Woodworth of Alliance; Daughter Lori (Erik) Peterson of Gering; Daughter Sarah Magnuson-Meyer of Rushville; Son Blaine (Kaitlin) Magnuson of Torrington, WY; Daughter Julie (Tim) Lacy of Bayard; Daughter Kimberli Magnuson of Alliance; and Son Zachary (Annie Grant) Magnuson of Laramie, WY. Grandchildren Hadlee, Saydee and Eain Peterson; Ryggin Meyer; Jackson, Kristin and Gunnar Magnuson; Bayleigh Lacy; and Brynn Wadas. Brother Steve (Mary) Magnuson of Sheridan, WY; Brother in Law Rick (Betty) Henderson of Salina, KS; 1 niece and 3 nephews. He is also survived by his longtime faithful companion, his dog Red.He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother and father-in-law Richard and Helen Henderson; Son Jacob Magnuson; Granddaughter Josephine Magnuson; and Son-in-Law Don Woodworth.Services for John will be Friday July 9, 2021 at 10 AM at the Nebraska Veterans Cemetery in Alliance. John Hal Magnuson (1947 - 2021)

&nbsp; Emily Abigail Misner, 21, died unexpectedly on June 26th, 2021 due to complications of Type 1 Diabetes, in Chadron, NE. She was born on November 10th, 1999 in Chicago, IL. Emily was the daughter of Ray and Katie (Nollett) Misner. She had completed high school and was hoping to attend a few classes at Chadron State College to further her education, in the near future.

For some time, Emily had enjoyed creating fun and inventive donuts at Butlers Daylight Donuts in Gordon, NE, where she developed great friendships with many of her customers. However, recently she had moved on to running an ice cream shop that she and her family were in the process of opening in Chadron, NE. There is no doubt that she had a passion and a gift for making sweet treats for people to enjoy. In her free time, Emily enjoyed taking her son, Christian, to the park, pool or just spending time with him. She also loved spending time with her friends, and she thrived doing anything artistic. 

Emily had a smile that could light up the entire world, without her even trying. She had a laugh that made it impossible not to smile and laugh with her, and fiery red hair that everybody loved. 

Emily was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Louie and Marlene Nollett and her paternal grandfather, Don Kovanda. She is survived by her parents Ray and Katie (Nollett) Misner, her sister Sarah Misner, her brother Justin Misner, her dog Sargent and the greatest gift that she could have ever asked for, her two year old son Christian. In addition to her immediate family, Emily left behind numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, a niece, close friends and other family.

A service of remembrance will be held on Tuesday, July 6th at 11 a.m. at the Wellspring Chapel, 101 E 5th St Gordon, NE 69343. There will be a gathering with coffee and treats at the Chapel immediately following the service along with a dinner reception full of fun and memories later in the evening at 6 p.m. at The Ridge in Chadron, NE, 164 Main St Chadron, NE 69337.

Emily Abigail Misner (1999 - 2021)

On July 3rd, 2021, Dorothy Conner passed away at Pioneer Manor in Hay Springs. &nbsp;She was 98 years old. &nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;She was born into a loving, lively family&nbsp;in the Sandhills south of Gordon and attended Gordon High School. &nbsp;Dorothy married Martin Conner on 3 July 1941 and raised their 1st son while teaching school during his WW II service. After Martin returned from service, he worked at the Saults ranch where Dorothy taught school and raised her family.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Dorothy was always active in the community; she was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gordon, the Willow Tree Quilt guild, R.S.V.P. (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program), American Legion Auxiliary and the Princess Rebekah Lodge #65. She also taught at rural schools in Cherry and Sheridan counties, attended Chadron Community College, and was a rural mail carrier. In her spare time, she liked to garden, paint, do crafts, read, and travel.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Mabel Johns, and her husband Martin, her brothers Orvis and Fred, and sisters Mary and Mildred. She is survived by her two sons, James (Dottie) and Dan (Kathy); her grandchildren Clifford, James, Alice, Suzanne, Josh, Alicia, and Kaci; her great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and many dear friends. &nbsp;

Julius Votruba passed away Thursday, July 1, 2021 at the Hemingford Community Care Center after a brief stay.&nbsp; He was 89.

Julius Gilbert Votruba was born October 27, 1931 at Hay Springs, Nebraska to William and Elinor (Wenske) Votruba.&nbsp; He attended school in Hay Springs and his family would move to a farm west of Hemingford in his youth.

He was drafted in to the U.S. Army on February 12, 1952.&nbsp; After basic training at Fort Bliss, TX he was sent to Korea where he served as an Artillery Medium and Heavy AAA Mechanic.&nbsp; After his tour of duty he was honorably discharged on February 14, 1954. For his service he was awarded National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal with 3 Bronze Service Stars, United Nations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

On June 2, 1954 he was united in marriage to Donna Marie Barta at St. Bridget Catholic Church. They celebrated their 67th Anniversary this year. To this union were born, Julie, Colleen, Greg and Tim.&nbsp; After their marriage they started farming with Donna’s parents, Louie and Tillie Barta.&nbsp; They lived on their farm for the 67 years.&nbsp; Later he was joined in farming and ranching by their sons, Greg and Tim. They would be joined by Tim in ranching. Julius continued to farm for the rest of his life.&nbsp;

He was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church, N.R.A., Farmer’s Union and a life member of the American Legion Post No. 9. He also had served on the Election Board of Lawn Precinct and District #56 School Board.

He is survived by his wife, Donna, his children, Julie (Bill) Eickhoff of Alliance, Colleen (Bret) Bixby of Ellsworth, Greg Votruba and Tim Votruba of Hemingford, his grandchildren, Megan (Matt) Hobbs, Clay Bixby and Mace Bixby and his great-grandchildren, Mackenzie and Elijah Hobbs. He is also survived by his sisters, Lela Jantz, Shirley (Jim) Stevar, Bernice Herian and Delphine (Dale) Campbell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters, Norabelle Abbott and Annabelle Collins, his brothers, Delbert, Lloyd, Clifford and Willard and his wife’s parents, Louie and Tillie Barta.

Private family services will be held at St. Bridget Catholic Church.&nbsp; Military Honors will be conducted. The family will host Celebration of Life at a later date. Memorials may be given to the Hemingford Volunteer Firefighters Association or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Donald Merle Kruger, age 84, passed away peacefully on June 28, 2021.&nbsp; Funeral services will be held at the Berean church in Chadron on 4th and Shelton street at 10 AM Saturday, July 3rd with burial south of Gordon at Mount Hope cemetery with pastors Justin Schefcik and Jason Gantz officiating.&nbsp;

Donald M. (Butch) Kruger was born July 18, 1936 to Max and Marie (Budd) Kruger on the Budd ranch in South Dakota along with his twin sister, Donna. They &nbsp;joined a brother, Max B. 2 years old. The children’s mother passed away in January 1937, leaving 3 children to move back to the ranch &nbsp;with grandparents, Newton and Mary Budd. They attended Demmer school north of highway 18 through the 8th grade. They were all taught to be honest and work hard, which Don did all his life.

Don entered the United States Army at age 19. He served 1 year of instruction for artillery training. He was there for 2 years, he was in Heildburg, Germany doing much of the same job of artillery. He was discharged at Colorado Springs, Colorado and came back to the ranch in South Dakota where Don Coon, manager of Co-op oil station, talked him into a job there. Don worked at Co-op for 14 years.&nbsp;

During this time he met and married Ruth Smith of Gordon, NE on September 10, 1961. Together they had 5 kids- Don, Mark, Steven, Laura, and David.

The family moved back to the Budd ranch in 1972 where their children grew with the same instruction he had gotten- to be honest and work hard.&nbsp;

The family has now grown to 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.&nbsp;

Don loved any time spent with his family. He also loved cats, fixing anything and everything that needed it, gardening, watching boxing every Friday night, and westerns! He enjoyed every season, but especially haying season.&nbsp;

He became a born again Christian in September 1981 under Pastor Tom Johnson and was also a board member of his church. Don’s favorite Bible verse was 1 John 1:9 and his favorite hymn was “Amazing Grace.” Survived by wife Ruth of Chadron, NE, son Don (Tammie) of Bowman, ND, Mark (Kay) of Gordon, NE, Steve (Vickie) Gordon, NE, David (LaTisha) of Rapid City, SD, daughter Laura Kicker of Chadron, NE, twin sister Donna Hotz of Whiteclay, NE, 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Don was proceeded in death by his parents, grandparents, brother Max Kruger, sister-in-law Maren (Kruger) Rouse, son-in-law Tim Kicker, and brother-in-law Robert Hotz.

Donna Jane Kampbell, 73, of Commerce City, CO, passed away peacefully at her home and was welcomed into the Lord’s presence on Saturday, June 26, 2021.&nbsp; A celebration of her life will be held at Tabor Funeral Home, Brighton, CO on Thursday, July 1, 2021 at 11:00 a.m - 12 noon.&nbsp;&nbsp; Donna will be laid to rest in Hemingford, NE, her hometown and a place she loved.&nbsp; A graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 3, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at the Hemingford Cemetery, Hemingford, NE.

Donna was born on February 13, 1948 to Vaughn Fickel and Emma Keane Fickel in Alliance, NE.&nbsp; She grew up in Marsland and Hemingford, NE.&nbsp; She attended Hemingford schools, where she was a cheerleader and exceled in academics and sports activities.&nbsp;

She married Paul Kampbell on December 23, 1969.&nbsp; They made their home in Colorado.&nbsp; Donna worked for the federal government for 4 years.&nbsp; She then worked as a legal secretary for 20 years.&nbsp; Then Donna worked with Paul at Eastside Heating doing accounting work until she retired.&nbsp;

Donna and Paul traveled extensively to many foreign countries and hosted three exchange students over the years.&nbsp; Donna was a very giving person and donated too many charities over the years.&nbsp; She always wanted to help anyone that she could.&nbsp; Donna enjoyed traveling, working in the yard, gardening, spending time with family, and spoiling her grandchildren.&nbsp; Donna kept her house in tip-top shape even with her full time work and taking care of her family.&nbsp; She was a proud mother and attended as many of her children’s activities as possible.&nbsp; She was also a proud grandmother.&nbsp;&nbsp; Her grandchildren were the loves of her life and she treasured her time with them.&nbsp;

Donna is survived by Paul Kampbell, her daughter Nicole (Jay) Singh, son Boe (Katrina) Kampbell, grandchildren, Sophia, Jason, Kendall and Colby, brothers, Conn Fickel,&nbsp; Gaylin (Cindy) Fickel, Ken (Vicki) Fickel, and Terry (Betty) Fickel and numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews. She is preceded in death by both of her parents and grandson, Joshua Singh.

Donna Jane Kampbell (1948 - 2021)

Walter (Walt) Vincent Ditsch passed away Monday, November 23, 2020 at Box Butte General Hospital at the age of 78.

A memorial service will be Tuesday, July 6 at 10:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church.&nbsp; A lunch will follow at the family farm, 5790 Jefferson Road following the service.

Walt was born on June 2, 1942 in Alliance to Jean Andre and Agnes (Grosze) Ditsch.&nbsp; Growing up on his family farm north of Alliance, he began farming at an early age and took over much of the responsibilities at the age of 14 following his father’s death.&nbsp; He graduated from Alliance High School in 1959.&nbsp; After high school, Walt served in the US Army spending much of his time stationed with the medical corps in Korea.&nbsp;

On March 15, 1969 he was united in marriage to Phyllis A. Bayless at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Alliance, where they both remained lifelong members.

Walt was an accomplished race car driver, winning many races, trophies, and setting numerous track records all across the area, most notably in Alliance, Gering, Cheyenne, and Denver.&nbsp; He raced his well-known car #16 which corresponded to the age he got his first car, alongside his brother and best friend Paul’s #43 stock car.&nbsp; He drove his first race at the age of 17, and liked to point out that he began racing at the age of 17 and retired at 71, when he took a final spin in his #16 sprint car in Gering on an evening that honored the classic race cars from the past.&nbsp; He held a lifelong love for racing and cars, eventually rebuilding and restoring classic cars.&nbsp; He enjoyed showing his kids and grandkids how to fix the cars and take them for rides.

Walt’s farm was a major source of pride as well.&nbsp; He continued his father’s legacy, and he and Phyllis farmed and owned that same land his entire life until he retired in 2019 and rented the farm out while retaining the same pride in the family land.&nbsp; He loved showing his grandkids who all live in the urban areas how fun farm life can be by showing them how everything works on the farm.&nbsp; His family brought him great happiness and he truly enjoyed celebrating each and every accomplishment by his kids and grandkids, both big and small.

Walt is survived by his loving wife Phyllis Ditsch, his children, daughter Karen Ditsch and husband Joe McCarthy of Plano, TX, son Mark and wife Maha Halabi Ditsch of Chicago, IL and son Andre and wife Hatal Ditsch of Bee Cave, TX, and his grandchildren, Kyle Doviken of Plano, TX, Kathleen Doviken of Nashville, TN, Alexander and Clara Ditsch of Chicago, IL, and Sebastian and Benjamin Ditsch of Bee Cave, TX.&nbsp; He is also survived by his brother, Jim (Melanie) Ditsch of Custer, SD, his sister, Diana (Ed) Parker of Omak, WA, his mother-in-law, Betty Bayless of Galveston, TX and numerous nieces, nephews and other family.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Paul and Lloyd Ditsch.

In lieu of flowers, the family would prefer memorials be given to the Holy Rosary Building Fund or Box Butte General Hospital.

Walter (Walt) Vincent Ditsch (1942 - 2020)

Laurie R. Davis, age 61, passed away on June 21, 2021 at Great Plains Health in North Platte. She passed peacefully surrounded by her family after a hard fight. Laurie was born on January 7, 1960 in Dillon Montana to Lorraine Davis and Budd Shuman. In 1962 her mother Lorraine married Jim Davis, who will forever be her dad. They raised three wonderful children together. Laurie was the *little* big sister to her two brothers.

“She was always there when I needed her,” says her brother Faryl, “she kept me out of trouble as a kid and stood by me when I went to prison. She was the best sister a guy could ask for and I have a huge hole in my heart now.”

“She was generous to a fault, didn’t complain about the big stuff, and she had a gentle way about her when you were feeling down. She was always her own woman and did things her way. Feisty and spirited with a quiet courage and gave herself selflessly,” says her brother Shane, “She shaped a lot of my musical preferences and my personal style and interests. She was so many things and the one you counted on like the sunrise or the mountains, she was always there. I will miss her sweet ways and her twinkling eyes almost as much as her laughter.”

Laurie moved from Montana to Arizona in 1968 where she graduated from Moon Valley High in 1978. Around 1990 she moved to Hemingford Nebraska with her son Brian, where she later met her soulmate Harold and they put their roots down to raise their family. She spent her life/career caring for others in many different settings. Her passion was sewing (quilting), being outdoors, finding the beauty and hidden messages in nature, being around friends and family, and just loving unconditionally.&nbsp; She was always one to stop and chat with everyone she saw. She is known for her free spirited soul and amazing friendship.

Left to honor Laurie and remember her love are her parents: Lorraine and Jim Davis, lifelong love: Harold Adamson, her three beautiful children: Brian Davis, Amber Adamson (Joshua Arellano), and Ashley Adamson, two bonus children: Tara DeWitt (Bill) and Andrew Adamson (Carly), her brothers: Shane Davis (Melinda Roberts) and Faryl Davis (Jessica Takami), nephews: Rayce Davis (Sam Sapp) and Ryan Davis (Melissa Roberts), nieces Hayley Schwartz and Rylee Eisenhart-Davis, great nieces: Bexley and Brightlyn Davis, great nephews: Raustin and Hudson Davis, many grandchildren: Kenley, Karsyn, Emilee, Lillian, Edlyn, Everett, Bella, and Claire, and the many other family members and friends that she loved and cherished deeply.

She is preceded in death by her father Budd Shuman, her parents-in-law Everett and Rosalie Adamson, her favorite grandma Ruth Bastian, and her grandpa Walt.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday June 26, 2021 at 10:00 A.M. at the United Methodist Church, 619 Custer Street, Hemingford, NE. Burial of ashes will follow at the Hemingford Cemetery. The family will greet guests on Saturday before the service.
