&nbsp;With travel restrictions still in place because of the coronavirus pandemic, the committee searching for a men’s basketball coach at Chadron State College will use ZOOM to make contact with several candidates on Thursday and Friday, according to Athletic Director Joel Smith, head of the search committee.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Smith said at least 160 applications have been received. He would not specify how many ZOOM contacts are planned, but said he feels good about the quality of the candidates.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; “I like the mix,” Smith said. “We have both those with lots of experience and those who appear to be up and coming.”

Chadron State turning to ZOOM for men's basketball coaching search

At least in one sense it’s been an ideal offseason for Drew Lock.

Broncos GM John Elway declared the second-year passer his established starter. Then, he went out and added old hands and fast feet in the kind of offensive makeover quarterbacks ordinarily can only dream about.

“I’m super pumped about the guys we’ve added,”&nbsp;<a href="https://twitter.com/arniestapleton/status/1257817265740804096?s=20">Lock&nbsp;</a>said Tuesday in a Zoom call from his parents’ home in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, where he’s been staying and training during the coronavirus pandemic.

Elway’s two biggest free agent acquisitions were running back Melvin Gordon and guard Graham Glasgow.

The Broncos selected a trio of receivers in the NFL draft for the first time in two decades, including burners Jerry Jeudy in the first round and KJ Hamler in the second. That marked the first time in franchise history they used their first to selections on wide receivers.

Elway also drafted O-linemen Lloyd Cushenberry and Netane Muti and tight end Albert Okwuegbunam, Lock’s favorite target at the University of Missouri.

All this firepower raises expectations for the Broncos to end a four-year playoff drought. And it impels Lock to play even better than he did in his 4-1 December audition after spending most of his rookie season sidelined with a thumb injury.

Lock certainly sees the remodeling -- which is being overseen by new offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur -- as both an endorsement and an inducement.

“I think the moves just end up saying they saw something positive in the way I played those last games, potentially being a guy who can stay here for a long time and help the Broncos win as many games as possible,” Lock said. “It means a lot to me to see that happen."

One thing Lock knows is all this firepower doesn’t guarantee anything, especially in the AFC West, where the Super Bowl champion Chiefs reside.

“Nothing’s in fine ink right now in terms of wins and losses just because of all the guys we’ve drafted,” Lock said. “We’ve got a lot of hard work to put together.”

For now, the bonding and learning is going on via video conference.

Lock still hopes he’ll be able to gather with his receivers sometime this offseason for a personal passing camp like Peyton Manning used to do.

“Yeah, of course -- when it is socially acceptable to do that and to have the best interests of everybody (in mind) as far as health goes,” Lock said. “I’m going to keep that in mind first. But then once that is ready ... I’ve got all of them on a text. So, whenever the professionals say it should be OK, whether that’s the NFL or that’s the CDC, we’re going to have them ready and we’re going to get out there and get this chemistry down and get things rolling.”

The NFL is releasing its 2020 schedule Thursday, and although it’s subject to change, it’s also the latest sign the league is hoping to proceed with business as usual even as other professional leagues have halted play on account of the coronavirus.

Locks’ video conference followed one by safety&nbsp;Kareem Jackson, who said he’s not a fan of playing in empty stadiums&nbsp;or of suiting up before there’s a vaccine or cure for COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus that has claimed more than 70,000 lives in the United States.

“I just think for us it doesn’t make sense to play any games unless it’s completely, 100% safe for us to go out there,” Jackson said. “If there is any threat of us being able to contract COVID and spread it to our families or anybody else that we’re around it just doesn’t make sense.

“I think I heard something about us playing and no fans and that would be like practice. So, in my opinion that would (stink). But in just talking with some of the guys it just doesn’t make any sense to go play any games unless it’s 100% safe for us to go out there.”

Lock demurred when asked for his opinion.

“I’m definitely going to defer that to the professionals, to the doctors,” he said. “I’m no expert ... so I’ll let them decide that and whenever they decide it’s OK for us to play then I’m ready to play.”

Lock said he's heeded the shelter-in-place and social distancing edicts, lifting and throwing exclusively with his personal trainer, a longtime friend who agreed not to work with any other clients at this time.

“I actually got pretty lucky with this whole deal. My trainer here in Lee’s Summit has a private place where it ended up being just me and him throughout this quarantine," Lock said.

Lock is locked, loaded and looking forward to his new targets

The NFL is moving its five games scheduled for London and Mexico City this season back to U.S. stadiums because of the coronavirus pandemic. 

All five regular-season games will now be played at the stadiums of the host teams. The Jacksonville Jaguars had been scheduled for two home games in consecutive weeks at Wembley Stadium in London. 

Two games were also planned for Tottenham’s new facility, with the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins as hosts. And the Arizona Cardinals were set to be the home team for a game at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. 

Opponents had not been announced, but the Denver Broncos were a reported likely opponent choice for the Falcons game. The NFL says in plans to resume international games in the 2021 season.

NFL moving all international games back to U.S. stadiums in 2020

CHADRON, Neb. -- May 4, 2020 --&nbsp;Some Chadron State College summer athletic camps have been postponed, and others cancelled, due to the state of Nebraska's extension of Directed Health Measures through the month of May and the expectation that the precautions, such as the prohibition of organized sports, will be necessary into June.

The football prospect camp scheduled for June 1 is cancelled. Team camps will be moved to July, and the July prospect camp is on as scheduled for July 25. The dates for 11-man team camps were moved to July 6-8 for "large schools", such as Nebraska Class A and B, and July 12-14 for the smaller schools. The six, eight, and nine-man camps will be July 16-18.

The CSC volleyball program is still set to host all team and skills camps July 7-15 as originally planned.

All wrestling and girls' basketball camps are cancelled, however the wrestling program will announce an alternative team camp at a later date. Registrations already submitted will be refunded.

The men's basketball and softball programs also intend to host camps, but the dates for those will be announced at a later time.

Changes announced to CSC summer athletic camps



CHADRON, Neb. -- May 4, 2020 --&nbsp;Chadron State College Head Softball Coach&nbsp;Kaley Ness&nbsp;gave three names on Monday of the softball players who would be reporting in the fall, comprising the incoming class of 2020.

One is pitcher Caitlin Lotspeich, a sophomore transfer from Feather River Community College in California. As a freshman in 2019, she was named Second Team all-conference, with a 3.18 earned runs average, a record of 9-6, and 73 strikeouts. Lotspeich was a four-time all-conference honoree and 2017 all-state honorable mention athlete in high school at Mazama High in Klamath, Oregon. She will join CSC as a sophomore, as California community college student-athletes are not being charged with a season of participation for the spring 2020 sport season.

Next is Jessie Henchenski, an infielder from Fort Collins, Colorado, where she played third base. She is another four-time all-conference player who led both her high school and competitive teams in batting average and on-base percentage. Last fall, Henchenski hit .417 with an OBP of .481 for Poudre High, raking in a team-high 23 runs batted in.&nbsp;

Finally, Samantha Conradie is the latest addition to the roster. She is a 2019 all-state participant from Legacy High in Broomfield, Colorado, where she helped her team to a regional tournament title and a trip to state. Conradie, a three-time all-conference selection with a .397 career batting average and only 15 strikeouts in 257 at-bats, figures in as a catcher or utility player at CSC.

In addition to the three, senior outfielder&nbsp;Ellie Owens&nbsp;confirmed she will return for an additional season, while two other players' decisions are pending.

Chadron State adds strong recruiting class to softball roster

The 62nd Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl Football game, which was originally scheduled to be played June 6, has been rescheduled. The game will be played Saturday, July 11 2020,&nbsp; 2 pm CT,&nbsp; at the University of Nebraska -Kearney.&nbsp; The Shrine Bowl Executive Board released the following statement on their website on Wednesday.

"The Nebraska Shrine Bowl Executive Board (NSBEB) together with the City of Kearney and University of Nebraska – Kearney agreed upon the new date for the 62nd Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl. The Nebraska Shrine Bowl Game will be played Saturday, July 11, 2020 at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium in Kearney.&nbsp; The leadership of the key stakeholders came together via teleconference, joined by NSB Executive Director Dave MacDonald and agreed on the new schedule.This decision was taken based on the three main considerations and in line with the principles established by the NSBEB on March 23, 2020 and re-confirmed at its meeting April 28, 2020:

These new dates provide health authorities and all involved in the coordination of the annual game the maximum time to deal with the evolving landscape and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a call on Tuesday, March 24, 2020, based on information provided by the CDC and the State of Nebraska at the time, NSB Executive Director Dave MacDonald and the NSBEB Members concluded that the 2020 Nebraska Shrine Bowl would be played no later than July 31, 2020. The NCAA Board of Governors gave its support to a plan that permits athletes to cash in on their names, images and likenesses as never before and without involvement from the association, schools or conferences. Proposed rule changes still must be voted on by NCAA membership at the convention in January. The NCAA said it will still seek help from Congress to keep individual states from passing their owns laws on compensation for college athletes.

NCAA gives initial approval allowing players to be paid for endorsements

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska quarterback Noah Vedral has entered the transfer portal and plans to play his final two seasons at another school. An athletic department spokesman confirmed Vedral's decision. Vedral has been backup to Adrian Martinez for two years. He transferred to Nebraska from Central Florida after coach Scott Frost was hired away from UCF in December 2017. Vedral started against Minnesota and Indiana last season. The native of Wahoo, Nebraska, also appeared in four other games and finished 34-of-52 passing for 418 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. Associated PressLINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska quarterback Noah Vedral has entered the transfer portal and plans to play his final two seasons at another school. An athletic department spokesman confirmed Vedral's decision. Vedral has been backup to Adrian Martinez for two years. He transferred to Nebraska from Central Florida after coach Scott Frost was hired away from UCF in December 2017. Vedral started against Minnesota and Indiana last season. The native of Wahoo, Nebraska, also appeared in four other games and finished 34-of-52 passing for 418 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions. The 41st annual NCA girls and 52nd annual NCA boys All Star Basketball games as well as the 37th annual All Star Volleyball match, are part of the Nebraska Coaches Association Multi-Sports Clinic, which is held each summer in Lincoln.&nbsp; Member Coaches&nbsp;may nominate deserving senior student-athletes.&nbsp; Players are selected based on the best available student athletes in all parts of the state as well as those who represent the sport and themselves in a positive manner.&nbsp; The All-Star selection committee is made up of member coaches from throughout the state.&nbsp;

The All Star basketball games will be played Monday, July 20 at 6 and 8 pm CT at Lincoln North Star High School.&nbsp; Head Coach for the Red girls team will be Kelly Cooksley of Broken Bow, assisted by Jeff Rump of Lincoln Southeast. Head Coach for the Blue girls team will be Bob Hayes of Ponca, assisted by John O'Connor of Bennington.&nbsp;

Lincoln&nbsp;– The Nebraska men's basketball program added one of most prolific 3-point shooters in the country, as Trevor Lakes has transferred to Nebraska.

Lakes, a 6-foot-7, 230-pound forward from Lebanon, Ind., spent the last three seasons at the University of Indianapolis, where he totaled nearly 1,000 points and 400 rebounds and helped the Greyhound program to a 62-25 record in that stretch. His 235 3-pointers in three seasons ranked fifth in program history. Lakes enters the 2020-21 season among the top-20 players nationally among all NCAA basketball players in 3-pointers, while he is a career 41 percent shooter from beyond the arc. Lakes has one year of college eligibility remaining.

"We are excited to have Trevor join our program," Nebraska Coach&nbsp;Fred Hoiberg&nbsp;said. "He is an elite shooter with size and a high basketball IQ, and his skillset and understanding of the game will allow us to be creative in how we can maximize his abilities in our system. Trevor is a proven scorer who brings experience and a competitive spirit that will push everyone in our gym to play at a higher level."

Last season, Lakes averaged a team-high 15.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game while shooting 44 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range to pace Indianapolis to a 24-6 record and a No. 1 seed in the 2020 NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.&nbsp; A second-team All-Great Lakes Valley Conference pick, he led the conference in 3-pointers per game (3.4/gm) while ranking in the top 15 in the GLVC in both scoring (14th) and rebounding (12th). He reached double-figures 26 times, including nine games with at least 20 points, and recorded nine games with at least five 3-pointers. His season high in 2019-20 was a 25-point outburst against Maryville (Mo.) when he went 9-of-16 from the field, including seven 3-pointers. He posted a double-double at Bellarmire with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Lakes also shined in an exhibition win over

Loyola (Chicago) with 22 points, including 6-of-11 from 3-point range, and six boards.

He collected All-GLVC honors as a sophomore, as he led the team in scoring at 14.1 ppg, while pulling down 5.5 rebounds per contest. Lakes paced the conference with 3.5 3-pointers per game and shot 39.7 percent from 3-point range, while ranking among conference leaders in scoring (11th, rebounding (12th) and blocked shots (0.7, 12th). He reached double figures 20 times, including five contests with at least 20 points. He tallied a career-high 27 points against Elmhurst and collected his first career double-double against Quincy with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Lakes saw action in 28 games as a freshman, averaging 5.6 points per game while shooting a team-best 45 percent from 3-point range. He had a season-high 21 points against Bluefield State and racked up 19 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 from 3-point range, at Tiffin.

He played his high school at Lebanon High School, averaging 22.5 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game as a senior, earning IBCA Honorable Mention All-State honors. He also was an All-Area Honorable Mention by the Indy Star and High Honorable Mention All-State by the AP. He played four seasons of basketball at Lebanon High School and one season of golf in high school.

Huskers add superior three-point shooter

John Elway pledged to give Drew Lock more weapons and better protection in an NFL draft teeming with wide receivers and offensive linemen.

The Denver Broncos general manager provided Lock with two terrific targets and added an athletic center through the first two nights of the draft.

Elway selected Penn State speedster KJ Hamler with the 46th pick in the second round Friday night, 24 hours after using the 15th overall pick on&nbsp;Alabama standout Jerry Jeudy, the highest Denver has ever selected a wide receiver in the common draft era.

In the third round, Elway added protection for his second-year QB by drafting LSU center Lloyd Cushenberry, who was named first-team All-SEC in 2019.

Elway didn't neglect his defense, either, selecting Iowa cornerback Michael Ojemudia and Arkansas D-tackle McTelvin Agim in the third round.

Ojemudia will help fill the void left by the departure of Chris Harris Jr. to the Chargers this offseason, and Agim solidifies a refurbished defensive line that includes trade acquisition Jurrell Casey.

The jewel of Day 2 for Denver, though, was Hamler, who provides a jolt to the Broncos' offense and special teams.

“I think I bring to the table speed, quickness, playmaking ability,” Hamler said. “I’m versatile, I can play outside and I can play in the slot. I can return kicks and punts. I’m a playmaker.”

Hamler, who is generously listed at 5-foot-9 and 185 pounds, is elusive with an uncommon burst of speed and has modeled his game after DeSean Jackson and Steve Smith.

The Broncos see him as a Tyreek Hill-type playmaker who can also serve as Denver’s kick returner and help the Broncos chase down Hill and the Super Bowl champion Chiefs in the AFC West.

Hamler wasn’t sure if Elway told him he’d also return kicks.

“I really couldn’t hear him just because my family was yelling and we were all crying,” Hamler said. “So it was kind of hard to hear him, but I hope he has that in mind. I would love to return kicks and punts.”

The Broncos’ once-formidable offense has been stuck in neutral for five years and last season Denver averaged a meager 17.6 points a game, 28th in the NFL, as their playoff drought reached four seasons.

A tweaked hamstring before the NFL scouting combine prevented Hamler from challenging John Ross’s record of 4.22 seconds set at the 2017 combine.

“I won’t say I think I was going to break the record, but I was going to be in the equation,” Hamler said. “I was going to be in the conversation -- 4.2 was the only thing on my mind."

He said his hamstring is fine now: "I’m fully healthy. I’m fully recovered. I’ve been running real good.”

Even though he’s undersized, Hamler stood out even in a&nbsp;class of wide receivers like none other.

Hamler said he was surprised when Elway picked him after spending his first pick on Jeudy, but he said he was eager to team up with Jeudy, Courtland Sutton and former college teammate DaeSean Hamilton in Denver, where he expects to quickly make his mark.

“I’m the smallest guy with the smallest frame," Hamler said, "but I’ll give you everything I’ve got.”

Ojemudia said facing the likes of Jeudy, Hamler, Sutton and tight end Noah Fant in his first training camp will microwave his NFL education.

“I mean, that's going to be big,” Ojemudia said. “It's going to be harder than the games sometimes."

Coach Vic Fangio expects Cushenberry to compete for the starting job along with Austin Schlottmann and Patrick Morris.

“He's got license to go in there and compete and win the job if he can,” Fangio said.

Elway said Cushenberry could also play guard.

Fangio said the draft has been seamless so far with teams having to conduct it via videoconferencing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We haven't had any problems communicating with the unusual setup for this draft,” Fangio said. "I think John's done a great job orchestrating. We had some guys we wanted today and we had chances to go up and get them and John decided to sit and they ended up being the right choices both times.

“So, we saved draft picks and we got the guys we wanted. I think that comes with experience doing the job. So, I just get out of the way when it comes to that point.”

Broncos add another WR, finish out draft with five picks Saturday

Let's meet a second newcomer to the Chadron State women's basketball program today, Olivia Waufle.

She signed her letter of intent recently and will come to Chadron from Horizon High School in Thornton, Colorado.&nbsp; Waufle averaged 13.3 points per game and 6.7 rebounds in 2019-2020 and earned Colorado 5A all-state honorable mention honors.

Waufle tells us, "I chose Chadron State because of the town’s tight knit community. I think it’s important to go new places and meet new people. For college I really wanted to experience something different from where I live now and Chadron State will let me do just that!"&nbsp; 

She added, "Coming from Thornton, CO to Chadron will be a big change for me but it’s something I look forward to. I plan on majoring in either business management or entrepreneurship."

Coaching and facilities were important factors to Waufle's decision to attend CSC.

"One of my favorite things about the basketball program at Chadron State is coach Raymer’s straightforwardness. She was very upfront and honest with me and I think that will help me grow in basketball. You can tell she truly cares about her players and wants the best for them in life. I also loved the facilities. The Chicoine Center is something else! I can’t wait for that gym to be packed with fans!"

For recruits all across college athletics COVID-19 has made the process unlike any other in history for kids choosing their future schools.&nbsp; Waufle was lucky and got to visit campus before making her selection.

"Fortunately I did get to visit Chadron State before the Covid-19 situation. The visit was amazing!! The team sat down and had lunch with me, which was super nice of them. I feel bad though, because I’m a little shy when I first meet people."

"My favorite part of the visit was probably the tour. My tour guide (Joel) was the nicest guy ever. Going on that tour gave me a true sense of Chadron State’s community because everyone smiled and said hi as Joel and I walked by. I was also accompanied by a senior from the women’s basketball team and she was extremely nice and answered all of my questions. We even took a little detour and she showed me her room!

"I then went and bought some Chadron swag, watched a practice, and talked with coach Raymer. I loved the visit and I feel bad for recruits who have to make a decision without visiting because it was a big reason why I chose Chadron!"

She's doing all she can to stay focused on her goals and skills during the pandemic situation, trying to make the process as enjoyable as possible.

Waufle says, "I’ve just been doing what I can at home! I’ve been conditioning and working on my skills. I do body weight workouts, go on runs, and do some basketball drills on my outdoor hoop.  </figure>By: Dave Collins, Eagle Radio Chadron Sports DirectorLet's meet a second newcomer to the Chadron State women's basketball program today, Olivia Waufle.She signed her letter of intent recently and will come to Chadron from Horizon High School in Thornton, Colorado.&nbsp; Waufle averaged 13.3 points per game and 6.7 rebounds in 2019-2020 and earned Colorado 5A all-state honorable mention honors.Waufle tells us, "I chose Chadron State because of the town’s tight knit community. I think it’s important to go new places and meet new people. For college I really wanted to experience something different from where I live now and Chadron State will let me do just that!"&nbsp; She added, "Coming from Thornton, CO to Chadron will be a big change for me but it’s something I look forward to. I plan on majoring in either business management or entrepreneurship."Coaching and facilities were important factors to Waufle's decision to attend CSC."One of my favorite things about the basketball program at Chadron State is coach Raymer’s straightforwardness. She was very upfront and honest with me and I think that will help me grow in basketball. You can tell she truly cares about her players and wants the best for them in life. I also loved the facilities. The Chicoine Center is something else! I can’t wait for that gym to be packed with fans!"<figure>

 </figure>For recruits all across college athletics COVID-19 has made the process unlike any other in history for kids choosing their future schools.&nbsp; Waufle was lucky and got to visit campus before making her selection."Fortunately I did get to visit Chadron State before the Covid-19 situation. The visit was amazing!! The team sat down and had lunch with me, which was super nice of them. I feel bad though, because I’m a little shy when I first meet people.""My favorite part of the visit was probably the tour. My tour guide (Joel) was the nicest guy ever. Going on that tour gave me a true sense of Chadron State’s community because everyone smiled and said hi as Joel and I walked by. I was also accompanied by a senior from the women’s basketball team and she was extremely nice and answered all of my questions. We even took a little detour and she showed me her room! "I then went and bought some Chadron swag, watched a practice, and talked with coach Raymer. I loved the visit and I feel bad for recruits who have to make a decision without visiting because it was a big reason why I chose Chadron!"She's doing all she can to stay focused on her goals and skills during the pandemic situation, trying to make the process as enjoyable as possible.Waufle says, "I’ve just been doing what I can at home! I’ve been conditioning and working on my skills. I do body weight workouts, go on runs, and do some basketball drills on my outdoor hoop. Following positive campus visit, Waufle chooses CSC for hoops

The Nebraska American Legion on Wednesday announced the cancellation of 2020 Area and State Baseball tournaments, however regular season games can be played when restrictions are lifted.&nbsp;

The Department of Nebraska Athletic Committee released the following statement in a news release on Wednesday..."

American Legion Baseball’s highest priority is the health, well-being and safety of all our participants, families, volunteers and fans....."&nbsp;It is the intention of the Department of Nebraska Athletic Committee to hold as much of / or any part of a playing season here in Nebraska&nbsp; that the situation allows, and to allow the local communities and regional areas to conduct their own tournaments as they see fit based on the current restriction for that region/area...." We ask that you continue to review the guidelines, restrictions and regulations established by your local, Nebraska and federal government to ensure doing whatever is required for the safety and well-being of everyone involved."

"Practices are NOT authorized until the date the Athletic Committee announces will be the initial date of practice. ALL registered and insured Legion teams will then be required to conduct 14 days of practice prior to their first official Legion baseball game against another team. Once the Governor announces a date to allow youth sports, the committee will stipulate a start date of the 14 day practice period. Even at that time, Legion teams will still be required to adhere to ALL local, state and national health measures."

On the local level, The Class B Area 7 Junior Tournament was scheduled to be held in Chadron with the Area 7 Senior Tournament scheduled to be held in Alliance.&nbsp; &nbsp;The Class B State Junior Tournament was to be held in Waverly and the Senior State Tournament in Bennington.&nbsp;&nbsp;All Tournament Host sites will remain the same for the 2021 season.

CHADRON, Nebraska -- April 23, 2020 --&nbsp;A group of alumni, fans, and supporters of Chadron State College football raised more than $12,000 over the span of less than two weeks, in support of the program, in an All-Time Team Tournament campaign led by Head Football Coach&nbsp;Jay Long. When the campaign ended on Thursday, the exact total had reached&nbsp;$12,247.11, according to the fundraiser page at chadroneagles.com.

"Eagle Nation showed us amazing support," said Long. "I'd like to personally thank each and every person who participated, no matter what amount he or she gave. I also had a great time hearing all of the stories former players shared from their playing days."

The fundraiser centered around the idea of an imaginary football playoff featuring 32 of the greatest CSC football teams throughout history. Teams were seeded by the number of overall wins they attained during their seasons, with ties going to teams with the fewest losses and then in chronological order. All teams with postseason bids, conference championships, and at least eight wins were included. The seasons represented ranged across 91 years, from 1923 to 2014.

The playoff "games" were decided using online polls at the Chadron State athletics website, which were coupled with a web-based donation form set up by the Chadron State Foundation.

By a fairly wide margin, fans decided that the 2008 Eagles were the greatest Chadron State football team of all time. That team, which featured senior quarterback Joe McLain under center, went 11-2, defeating in-state rival Wayne State College 23-17 in a home NCAA playoff game. The 2008 team had been the third-seeded team in the tournament.&nbsp;

The tournament page was viewed nearly 22,000 times by 5,000 unique visitors. The winning team received nearly 3,000 votes in the fourth round of voting, and it received 1,555 in the tournament championship.

In addition to naming a tournament winner, Coach Long extended an invitation to the Lewellen Family Hospitality Room, on October 3, for the team which raised the most funds. The 2001 team, which was the runner-up in the tournament, came out on top in the fundraising race, with $1,761 to its name. The 2006 and 2008 teams were close behind with over $1,000 each.

When the idea for the tournament was hatched, more than two weeks ago, Coach Long asked supporters to raise $4,000 in an effort to purchase software that would allow coaches to instruct players from a distance, since spring practice had been cancelled. When that total was reached, within around four and a half days, an anonymous donor matched the funds already raised, to that point, and a new goal of $10,000 was set. By last Wednesday, the total surpassed $12,000.

Coach Long added that the link to donate will remain up, in case anyone missed it, for additional donations.

CSC football raises $12K in all-time team tournament

In his 10th draft, John Elway finally picked a player from Alabama.

The Denver Broncos general manager backed up his talk about building around second-year QB Drew Lock by selecting Crimson Tide wide receiver Jerry Jeudy with the 15th pick in the NFL draft Thursday night.

Jeudy is the 71st player Elway has selected in his decade as GM. He's also among the gems of a deep crop of wide receivers coming out of college.

Earlier this week, Elway said it was just happenstance that he hadn’t selected an Alabama player. He praised Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban and said previous drafts simply didn’t fall right for him to select an Alabama alum.

Jeudy was selected three spots after Alabama teammate Henry Ruggs III, who went to the rival Las Vegas Raiders at No. 12.

Another new landscape for Elway: for the first time in four years he didn’t spend his offseason analyzing college quarterbacks after going all-in on Lock, who won four of his five starts to end the 2019 season, his only loss coming in the snow at Kansas City.

While stressing that Lock has “a long way to go,” Elway said he feels he’s finally found a worthy successor to Peyton Manning, who retired four years ago.

“Now is the fun part of trying to fill around him,” said Elway, who began that task with the free agent signings of O-lineman Graham Glasgow, running back Melvin Gordon, tight end Nick Vannett and backup QB Jeff Driskel.

Jeudy joins a receiving corps led by third-year pro Courtland Sutton.

Another priority for Elway in this draft is to fortify Lock’s protection with O-linemen. Elway entered the draft with 10 selections, half of them in the top-95.

Chadron State welcomed in a new recruiting class to its
women’s basketball program with signing day last week.&nbsp; Two of the signees are from Colorado and today
we’ll learn more about the pair that is headed to The Rock for hoops.

First up: Toni Lopez is a 5’9” small forward and shooting guard from
Limon High School.&nbsp; The four-year starter
averaged 8.8 points along with 3.6 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game over the course of her career.&nbsp; &nbsp;She shot 37 percent from three her senior year and 51 percent from the floor for her career.

Lopez comes in with a winning pedigree – the Badgers
were 24-1 last season and lost just 11 times in Lopez’ career.&nbsp; She dropped a season high 22 points in the Great 8 round of the 2A State playoffs in a win over Holly High School before the tournament was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lopez says, "Well my cousin, Javier
Zamora, plays football there which started my interest. Then, at a college fair
earlier this year, the Chadron representative did an amazing job and then I was
basically hooked. I plan on studying Athletic Training, which I am really
looking forward to."

Lopez said CSC's style of play is similar to what she was a part of at Limon but expects the game to be more intense at the college level.

With the coronavirus pandemic forcing college teams to change their recruiting strategies and rely on technology rather than in-person interactions Lopez found CSC's methods to be very helpful.

"Unfortunately, I was unable to go for a visit due to the pandemic; however, Coach Raymer did give me a tour through FaceTime and did send me a link for a virtual tour which I am very thankful for. I love the campus! It’s so beautiful!" Lopez said.

Without all the normal basketball resources she's still staying focused on training and isn't letting the COVID-19 restrictive measures become an excuse or a distraction.

"I’ve been having to do a lot of at-home workouts. Fortunately, I have access to weights so I am able to lift. I run around town and do speed/agility workouts as well. I also have access to a hoop so I get shots in almost everyday!"

Coach Raymer likes to bring in players with ambition, high goals and self determination.&nbsp; Lopez checks all those boxes and is ready to take on whatever role can best help her new team in Chadron win ballgames.

"My goals might seem a little over-the-top since I’m a freshman but I’m very determined to reach them" says Lopez. "When it comes to team goals, I really want us to work hard for a winning record. I understand that the difficulty level between high school and college basketball is completely different, but I believe that we have the talent and skill level to do this, the question is if we have the mindset. Once we all develop this relentless mindset, I’m positive we’ll do great things!"

"When it comes to personal goals, I’m really going to work on not holding myself back. I did that a lot in high school so I never really showed my true potential until late in the season my senior year, and even then I don’t believe it reached my max. I want to do anything I can in order to make our team better. I will take the role I am given and work to perfect it!"

Lopez added she's excited to be a part of developing a great connection within the team, and mentioned sophomore Jordan Morris has been very helpful.&nbsp;

Harsin makes $1.65 million in base salary and will be required to take a 10-day furlough. Most of Boise State’s football coaches will also be required to take 10 days. School President Marlene Tromp informed university staff of the furloughs Monday, saying canceling events into the summer because of the coronavirus pandemic has cost Boise State more than $10 million. The furloughs will affect all university employees earning more than $40,000 per year.&nbsp;

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; More than 150 candidates have formally applied for the position, Smith said. The search committee has reviewed the applications and is contacting references.&nbsp;

&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; But Smith added that the current travel restrictions make it unclear when the first candidates can be brought on campus and he is hesitant to hire a new coach without that occurring.&nbsp;

“We’re going as far as possible until that issue is settled,” he stated.
