The United Way of Western Nebraska is holding their Duck Draw Car this Thursday at Runza in Alliance from 11- to 1 PM. They will have their 2024  Cheverlet Traxs.

Executive Director Karen Benzel was on the KCOW morning show on Monday and has some details. "If you come and see us, and buy what what we call a 'quacky combo,' for $6o,&nbsp; you receive seven ducks for the price of six and we're going to give you a $25 gift card," Benzel said.

Proceeds go to United Way and their&nbsp; community impact initiatives like Imagination Library, partner agencies, and much more.

United Way Duck Draw this Thursday at Alliance Runza

The Panhandle Research and Extension Center issues a weekly update about how the crops are looking this week and what the water usage is estimated at. Gary Stone, Nebraska Extension Educator has an update for the Panhandle this week.

"Crops are starting to look well, crop water use will probably go up this week quite a bit," Stone said. "The weather forecast shows temperatures in the upper 90's to even over a 100 degrees this week, so the crops will definitely be using more water."&nbsp;

Stone says that it is a critical time for all of the plants since most of the crops still need irrigating. Crop water use will vary across the Panhandle due to variations in temperature and precipitation events.

The Alliance City Council will hold their City Council meeting tonight (Tuesday).&nbsp; On the agenda is the first reading of Ordinance 2964 which will approve the annual appropriation bill for the fiscal year beginning Oct. 1. 2023

Also on the agenda is to appoint Michael O'Dell to fill a vacancy on the planning commission. The vacancy is for the current term that expires December 31. 2024. 

For the final item, City Treasurer Cindy Baker will present the 3rd quarter financial report.

The City Council meeting will be at the Alliance Learning Center at 1750 Sweetwater Ave at 7 p.m.

The Nebraska State Patrol have released information about a vehicle and train collision in Box Butte County on Friday. 

The NSP tells Panhandle Post that they were dispatched at 4:15 p.m. to the railroad crossing on Madison Road near Highway 385 and that a white Ford F-150 pulling a trailer was westbound on Madison Road north of Alliance. The pickup failed to stop at the railroad crossing and was struck by the train.

The driver of the pickup was not injured, but the vehicle ended up on the west side of the train while the trailer remained on the east side.

The driver of the truck was cited for failure to stop at a railroad crossing. The Nebraska State Patrol were on scene and were assisted by the Alliance Police Department and Box Butte County Sheriff's Office.

Congressman Flood Encourages Nebraskan students to join Congressional App Challenge

LINCOLN, Neb. – A delegation of 12 nutritionists and buyers from different feed-producing companies in Mexico were in the Midwest and Nebraska last week to gain a better understanding of the U.S. ethanol sector. In conjunction with the DDGS Symposium, the delegation visited Nebraska to see U.S. corn production areas, visit ethanol plants and meet with potential business partners.

During their visit to Nebraska, the group was provided with an overview of Nebraska’s agricultural and ethanol industries before they traveled to Friend and visited Bruntz Farms. Russ Finch of Greenhouse in the Snow donated a 17 x 102-foot kit in honor of his wife Darlene to St. John’s Lutheran in Alliance, working with Pastor Tim Stadem to line up the project. Though their pastor relocated to a church in Wyoming, a dedicated group began to build the greenhouse about a year ago. Winter snow and spring rain have hampered the project, yet significant progress has been noticeable in recent weeks passing by on Emerson Avenue.

Allen Bright, who runs the fabrication aspect of Greenhouse in the Snow, had given me a heads up about St. John’s when I interviewed him about the business. I thought it would be great to see one of the kits come together and find out why a church would want a greenhouse. My inside connection has been Deb Henzler at the Keep Alliance Beautiful Recycling Center, her husband, Ron, has been part of the construction crew. She reported on developments during July, prompting me to pick a morning to stop by.

Harold Roller, Warner Schulze, Paul Wills and Jerry Tolstedt were shoveling dirt near what will be the entrance as I walked up. Responding to my observations on how the structure was coming along, Jerry paraphrased the reason for the slower than desired pace. “Winter fell like a curtain. Spring flooded this place. May, finally started to work on it,” he said.

Warner’s wife, Michele, has chronicled the progression with photographs of the site on work days. She explained that the hard part was digging post holes for the crooked roof. Snow and rain from winter and spring caved in the north wall that had to be redone.

Michele serves as chairman of the greenhouse board. Maurine Roller (Harold’s wife) is secretary. Michele noted that they have “lots of different people doing different things. We have a board that keeps things going. . . . (the greenhouse) was a generous donation. I hope we can do good by it.” “Russ and Darlene are long time members of St. John’. We accepted Russ’s offer of the greenhouse because it is in (keeping) with the church’s vision of social ministry,” Maurine added.

Alliance has seen new churches built, existing buildings expanded or remodeled and growing congregations move in where others faded. St. John’s endeavor will add a new dimension that will be unique among the local faith community. The four men finishing their digging for the day, gestured to the rectangular footprint, describing what the church expects to grow: eight mini/dwarf trees at the east end such as lemon, lime, orange and fig; cold weather vegetables (broccoli, radishes); vine plants like pumpkins and watermelons; raspberry and other bushes, tomatoes; and flowers that could provide cut flowers for the altar. Harold said there will be a separate crew to take care of it and eventually a paid caretaker. Paul hopes to get the kids involved.

A healthy church thrives on involvement. Numerous ministries draw on individuals’ time, talent and treasure.

Earl and Patricia Jones are on the Community Task Force on poverty and the greenhouse will be used to help alleviate hunger insecurity that exists in Alliance, Maurine said. Produce will be donated to the Community Table with extra produce going to those come to the Table. Produce from the fruit trees will be sold and part of the proceeds will go back to the greenhouse and the

rest will fund scholarships for St. John’s Preschool. “Like the Mission Store that began as an Episcopalian church project and has since become a church wide community project, the hope and dream is that the Greenhouse ministry will become a part of a church wide community effort,” she noted, looking to the future.

Jerry and Michele both offered names that are making this greenhouse a reality, including: Krese Tolstedt, Charlie Lee, Chris Mischnick (he poured the footings), Trent Benzel (sprayed weeds). Steve Benzel used his own smaller front loader to help move some dirt around. Doug Hashman loaned the crew a large backhoe to help with the digging that Scott Taylor also used for the base of the greenhouse and continues to be used for some of the dirt work.

Interim Pastor Megan Morrow has also worked closely with the committee. Ken Wood and Triangle Electric have been hired to assist. Maureen has written grants, including a $10,000 award from the Emmanuel Vision Foundation. They also received a personal donation for that amount.

A greenhouse will be an awesome asset at St. John’s. The structure may also double as a classroom. Michele said Karen Runkel, a master gardener who operated an area commercial greenhouse, wants to teach classes there. Like the Parable of the Sower, time will tell on what type of soil the seeds fall and what will grow in the months and years to come.

KAB: St. John’s Greenhouse Coming Together After Delays

Panhandle Gymnastics is holding their 2nd annual fundraiser garage and bake sale Friday, Aug. 18 from 4-18 p.m. and Saturday Aug. 19th. The fundraiser will be at 132 West 3rd St. in  Chadron. Panhandle Gymnastics started in 2018 with the goal of establishing a competitive program in five years; currently in 2023 the team has 31 gymnasts from the panhandle who compete and travel to South Dakota, Wyoming and Eastern Nebraska. 

Whitney Baldwin is&nbsp; the parent of a competitive athlete on Panhandle Gymnastics and says the sports provides young women the opportunity to learn skills that are beneficial in life. 

"Throughout each season they learn bravery, self confidence, and self responsibility; they learn to take pride in themselves even when they fall, and most importantly they learn to get back up and try again."

GERING, NE) The popular Saddle Rock Trail has reopened for the hiking enjoyment of the public thanks to the hard work of the monument’s maintenance crew. 

However, the trail surface has sustained some damage, so a temporary walking surface is in place with repair work continuing through the fall. Superintendent Dan Morford reminds all trail users to,&nbsp; “Please watch your footing and be aware of your surroundings as you use the trail. We are happy to get the trail open for all visitors to enjoy.”

The Scotts Bluff National Monument Visitor Center is currently open daily 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. daily, while the Summit Road opens to motorized vehicles at 9:00 a.m., with the last drive up at 5:30 p.m. All motorized vehicles must be off the road by 6:00 p.m. The monument grounds, including the Saddle Rock Trail, are open sunrise to sunset.

Saddle Rock Trail reopens at Scottsbluff National Monument

A man is lucky to be alive after his truck and trailer struck a train in Box Butte County on Friday afternoon. 

Authorities say the incident happened a 4:14 p.m. Friday when a man driving a white pick up truck and trailer was going over Madison westbound and struck the train.

No details have emerged about what caused the accident, but law enforcement officials say the man is fortunate to not have any injuries, though the&nbsp; truck did sustain some damages.

Nebraska State Patrol and the Box Butte County Sheriff's Office were on scene and were assisted by the Alliance Police Department.

 Train strikes truck in Box Butte County, no injuries

LINCOLN (AP) —A Nebraska judge on Friday rejected an effort to block a&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/transgender-health-care-abortion-ban-nebraska-1a88067bf403559116df7c09e004e472">ban on abortions</a>&nbsp;after 12 weeks of pregnancy and restrictions on gender-affirming surgery.

Lancaster County District Court Judge Lori Maret sided with the state and allowed a law&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/trans-health-abortion-laws-nebraska-3bd01980e0df33bc89afc3d5b0c11f93">approved by the Nebraska Legislature</a>&nbsp;earlier this year to remain in effect.

The law outlaws abortion after 12 weeks of pregnancy with exceptions for rape, incest and to save the life of the mother. As of Oct. 1, it also will prevent people under 19 from receiving gender-affirming surgery and restricts the use of hormone treatments and puberty blockers for minors.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland had filed a lawsuit arguing legislators violated a constitutional requirement that bills not contain more than one subject. Lawmakers&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/abortion-transgender-ban-nebraska-filibuster-94f1e637e2d9034f608c793bf929e888">added the abortion ban</a>&nbsp;to an existing bill dealing with gender-related care.

The attorney general contended the issues didn't violate the rule because they were both health related.

“I am grateful for the court’s thorough decision," Gov. Jim Pillen said in a statement. “I was proud to sign into law a measure that protects kids and defends the unborn, and I am pleased that it has been upheld.”

Mindy Rush Chipman, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union of Nebraska, which helped represent Planned Parenthood, said they would appeal the decision.

“State senators combined unrelated restrictions into a single bill in their rush to take away Nebraskans’ rights,” Rush Chipman said in a statement. “That tactic violated the text of the Nebraska Constitution, which plainly says that ‘no bill shall contain more than one subject.’ As a result, Nebraskans are being seriously harmed.”

Ruth Richardson, CEO of Planned Parenthood North Central States, called the decision a “devastating blow to Nebraskans’ fundamental right to make what should be private decisions between them and their doctors.”

Richardson said the organization would continue to provide abortions before 12 weeks of pregnancy.

Legislators added the abortion restrictions to a transgender-related bill as an amendment after a separate bill to ban abortions at about six weeks failed to overcome a filibuster.

Box Butte County Fair Parade LIVE 

An estimated 500,000 bison currently live in the United States, including in the Panhandle&nbsp; and the great plains region.&nbsp;

Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford first had Bison in their park in the 1970's and they are still roaming the grounds.&nbsp; Rob Lemmon is an Assistant Superintendent is at the Park and helps manage the herd and tells Justin Haag on Panhandle Afield people can start seeing the&nbsp; bison at the park after winter during last week of April, and are currently available to see in the pastures of the park.

Bison weigh upwards over 2,000 over and Lemmon outlines explains how important it is to be cautious at the park.&nbsp;

"We don't allow horseback riding in those pastures,&nbsp; bicycles or hiking in any of them," Lemmon said.&nbsp; "We have the road you can drive through and you have to stay in your car the entire time."

By Alex Benzegala Panhandle PostAn estimated 500,000 bison currently live in the United States, including in the Panhandle&nbsp; and the great plains region.&nbsp;Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford first had Bison in their park in the 1970's and they are still roaming the grounds.&nbsp; Rob Lemmon is an Assistant Superintendent is at the Park and helps manage the herd and tells Justin Haag on Panhandle Afield people can start seeing the&nbsp; bison at the park after winter during last week of April, and are currently available to see in the pastures of the park.Bison weigh upwards over 2,000 over and Lemmon outlines explains how important it is to be cautious at the park.&nbsp; "We don't allow horseback riding in those pastures,&nbsp; bicycles or hiking in any of them," Lemmon said.&nbsp; "We have the road you can drive through and you have to stay in your car the entire time."Lemmon says that this time of year, bison are extra agitated due to breeding season.&nbsp; For more information on viewing the bison at Fort Robinson State Park, contact them at (308) 665-2900.Thanks to Justin Haag and the Panhandle Afield program for contributing to this story.

The Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance is currently featuring artwork from Native American artists from around the county. The&nbsp; artwork is on loan from the Heritage Center from the Red Cloud Indian School.

 Kyren Gibson is the Executive Director of the Carnegie Arts Center and says that Red Cloud was on a hiatus from renting exhibits since 2020 and that it's great to have their pieces back in Alliance.

"They've been purchasing art from Native American artists from across the nation since 1975," Gibson said. "They loaned it out to us, so we have 56 pieces from 37 different artists and the pieces date back to 1997 to 2023."

Gibson says the exhibits are very diverse with a wide range of subject matter. The range and from sculptural pieces, paintings, ledger paper art and mixed media.&nbsp; The exhibits find the art in the upper gallery of the Carnegie Arts Center until the middle of September.

You may have seen a sign by the cash registers in Grocery Kart that says NEBRASKA DOUBLE UP FOOD BUCKS. What is Double Up Food Bucks, and how does it work?

Double Up is a nationwide program benefitting low-income households who qualify for SNAP, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. When people use their SNAP/EBT Card, Double Up matches their fresh fruit and vegetable purchases dollar for dollar, up to $20 a day. That means that families who are eligible for SNAP (formerly called food stamps) can get twice the fresh produce. No additional sign-up is required.

Eligible products at Grocery Kart include fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs. This includes pre-cut and bagged items. It does not include items that come seasoned or with sauces or dressings. Items in the deli are not included, and neither are salad kits.

When people use an EBT card to pay for groceries, the cash register will automatically keep track of eligible produce items. The amount of their produce purchase is matched dollar-for-dollar up to $20. The shopper receives Double Up Food Bucks as a register coupon to redeem next time they purchase fresh fruits and vegetables. The coupon must be surrendered when it is used. If a portion remains, a new coupon is issued.

One of the problems facing many low-income families is the ability to afford a healthy diet. Many workers work long hours on odd shifts, so they rely on fast food or processed food for their family meals. This causes a number of health problems, because these types of meals often offer very little nutrition, but lots of fat, salt, and sugar.

Double Up works with locally-owned and independent grocery stores and farmers markets. In the Nebraska Panhandle, the only participating stores at this time are Grocery Kart in Alliance and Fresh Foods in Gering. Chain stores and dollar stores are not participating.

Becky Maser, manager of Grocery Kart, said that she was approached by RDS, the company that provides their cash register system and updates their data. Grocery Kart has been participating in Double Up Food Bucks since April, and produce sales have been going up thanks to the program.

In the United States, food is the third-largest household expense, after housing and transportation. Families with low incomes spend more than a third of their disposable income on food. People with limited resources have to make difficult food choices — and for many, fruits and vegetables have been out of reach. Eating healthy food can be expensive!

SNAP is a government program that provides assistance to buy food for low-wage working families, low-income seniors, people with disabilities, and other individuals with low incomes.

Families with children make up 66% of SNAP recipients. With this assistance, the hope is that low-income households will be able to afford other needs, like rent, utilities, transportation, and medical bills.

With Double Up Food Bucks at places like Grocery Kart, SNAP/EBT cards can be stretched beyond bread, eggs, meat, and canned goods. Families can get the best nutrition possible, because they can buy more fresh fruits and vegetables. From apples to zucchini, an entire alphabet of produce is available!

With the Box Butte County Fair going on through this weekend, honoring our countries Veteran's in the Panhandle is a part of tradition of the Fair.&nbsp; &nbsp;Lenni Johnson from Hemingford, who is on the Board for the Veteran's Memorial Flight out of Chadron, and says the next flight is leaving Chadron on September 7.&nbsp; &nbsp;It will go through Alliance at 9:45 am that morning, on its way to Washington D.C.

"It's a two day deal, went by really quick, but it was really cool and I just want to spread the word about it."&nbsp;Johnson says that they have a booth at the Box Butte County Fair and if anyone has any interest, you can talk to Lennie or Ron and applications for the future honor flights are available and donations are encouraged as well.
