Panhandle police activity, June 12 - June 23

July 4 th is nearing and the Chadron Police Department would like to remind everyone of the City Ordinances pertaining to fireworks.

Within the City of Chadron, permissible fireworks can be discharged starting on June 24 th and ending on July 5 th .&nbsp;

 June 24 th through July 3 rd permissible fireworks can be discharged from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.&nbsp;

 July 4 th permissible fireworks can be discharged from 8:00 a.m. until 1:00 a.m. on July 5 th .&nbsp;

It is unlawful to discharge fireworks within 300 feet of a fireworks stand, gas station, or in a public park.&nbsp; Fireworks may be discharged at other times upon obtaining a special permit approved by the Chadron City Council.&nbsp;All local vendors will have what is considered to be permissible fireworks.

While enjoying fireworks and the holiday, remember these safety tips:

 Only use fireworks as intended, and according to their instructions

 Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers

 Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees- hot enough to melt some metals.

 Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.

 Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.

 Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

 Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or other mishap.

 Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.

 Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.

 After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.

 Report inappropriate or misuse of fireworks to the Chadron Police Department @ 432-0510

Alliance WIC Transportation Assistance Update

Conference themes run the gamut no matter the organization or occasion. The sign challenged Keep Nebraska Beautiful affiliates to “Rethink Your Waste” every time we entered the meeting room for the annual conference in Lincoln June 4-6. Though nobody ever spoke the phrase at any of our sessions, tours or social time (not that I heard anyway) it has become the lens that I review the three days through.

As I review the agenda, everything on the page has something to do directly (and in a few cases indirectly) with preventing current waste/litter or mitigating the potential for materials that would otherwise pollute or at a minimum take up space for years.

Jeri Irby, southeast director and interim western director, opened the conference at noon Tuesday with the Keep America Beautiful update, including mention of the Greatest American Cleanup spring/summer campaign.

Kent Holm unpacked battery recycling legislation and offered updates on how the process will work.

Jana Hughes, District 24 Nebraska state senator, returned after speaking at the 2024 KNB conference in Omaha. The lawmaker also addressed battery recycling legislation and other highlights of the Unicameral’s session that had ended the day before.

Wednesday began with “First Star Recycling: Updates &amp; Opportunities” from Patrick Leahy, who took over as CEO of the Omaha-based company two years ago. While the latest on the Hefty ReNew Program (which I have referred to as the orange bag program in the past) was of interest, his news on a $200,000 grant to start recycling in rural communities spurred lively conversation.

After lunch, Morgan and Madeline, faculty members from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln described strides at the university in recent years in the area of sustainability, which we viewed first-hand on a walking tour of the nearby campus.

Kimberly Carroll Steward from the Nebraska Recycling Council gave an update on the organization and shared practical and easily applicable information about backyard composting to finish up our instructional day.

Wednesday night most of us boarded a bus for “An Evening with KNB” at the James Arthur Vineyard near Raymond. That fundraising event, evening social/dinner the night before and affiliate working sessions throughout the conference fueled a sense of common purpose and comradery that is not always as easy to see over Zoom meetings and other interactions during the year.

Finally, we toured American Steed/RecycleMax, Inc. in Lincoln before everyone went their separate ways. The electronics recyclers were amazing in how they process components and offer a service free of cost.

Keep Alliance Beautiful and the rest of our fellow affiliates throughout the state are first and foremost committed to the communities we serve every day. However, I am optimistic we will continue to reach out and cooperate to make Nebraska a cleaner, greener place to live “The Good Life.”

KNB Conference: Rethink Your Waste

HAY SPRINGS, NE – WESTCO CEO David Briggs presented a $40,000 donation to the Hay Springs Volunteer Fire Department on June 19th, on behalf of WESTCO and the Land O’Lakes Foundation. The presentation, held at the Hay Springs Fire Hall, was attended by community members, local leaders, and the family of Randy Turman — whose legacy of service inspired the donation.

The funds, made possible through the Land O’Lakes Foundation’s Co-op Match Program, will support the purchase of a new grass fire fighting rig dedicated in memory of Turman, a longtime WESTCO employee and dedicated volunteer.

Randy served the Hay Springs Volunteer Fire Department for 47 years, including many years as Fire Chief and as an EMT. He was also a 12-year member of the City Council and a member of the United Methodist Church. Professionally, he worked with WESTCO for 33 years, most recently as the Northern Petroleum Manager. Known for his kind heart, love of the outdoors, and his joy in being “Papa” to his grandchildren, Randy’s impact will be long remembered.

“WESTCO is thankful to the Land O’Lakes Foundation for the opportunity to participate in the Member Co-op Match Program,” said Briggs. “This contribution, made in Randy’s honor, reflects both his legacy at WESTCO and his lifelong commitment to the safety and well-being of this community. By combining resources, we are able to double the impact toward a project that will benefit Hay Springs and surrounding areas for years to come.”

Land O’Lakes Foundation Executive Director Morgan Kinross-Wright added, “Land O’Lakes is pleased to make donations that impact communities where our members, employees, plants, and facilities are located.”

Eleven pipefitters, four electricians, and five bridges &amp; buildings were laid off at the beginning of the week.&nbsp;

We will continue to reevaluate our needs at this location to ensure we remain aligned with evolving market conditions and operational priorities."

BNSF has layoffs in Alliance 

Post Podcast: Kman's Concert Calendar, weekend starting June 19

CHADRON – Music has always been more than notes on a page to Olivia Valadez. Music has been a lifelong connection to family, a source of personal strength, and now, a path to a career for Valadez who is helping others find their own voice.

Valadez, a Chadron State College music education major from Alliance, is scheduled to graduate in December after completing her student teaching in Bridgeport this fall. She plans to offer private lessons and substitute teach while searching for a full-time teaching position.

Her decision to become a music educator was inspired not only by a deep love of music, but also by the support and compassion she received during a difficult time in high school.

“There was a teacher in 10th grade who saw that I was struggling,” Valadez said. “She walked with me when I felt most alone. It wasn’t a grand gesture, but it changed everything. I knew then that I wanted to be a teacher, someone who helps others feel seen.”

Valadez’s passion for teaching blossomed during her time at CSC. While she developed a strong foundation in theory, composition, and performance, it was the practicum and methods courses that had the most significant impact.

“The most valuable thing I’ve learned at CSC is how to teach music,” she said. “I’ve gained so much from my classes and performances, but learning how to guide others through music is what I’ll carry into my career.”

Although she originally planned to focus on piano, Valadez credits Dr. Joel Schreuder with opening her up to vocal performance.

“I didn’t want anything to do with singing,” she said. “But I joined vocal jazz, changed my instrument to voice, and found a new way to express myself.”

She also praised Dr. Michael Stephens, noting his energy and dedication made music theory engaging and jazz band rehearsals enjoyable.

“There are so many great professors here,” she said. “They challenge you, support you, and give you opportunities to grow.”

One standout experience was performing a composition entitled Mass by Steve Dobrogosz in Kearney, Nebraska, in 2023 with other college choirs, a high school choir, and a chamber orchestra.

“It was incredible,” she said. “The sound, the people, the music — it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had performing.”

Valadez’s journey is also rooted in family. Her grandmother, Dr. Peggy Marshall, a retired CSC Education professor, passed on her musical passion to Valadez’s mother, Sara Behrends.

“My grandma is a huge advocate for music, which has rubbed off on me. My mom surrounded me with music growing up. She was always singing, playing piano, or planning her next lesson or worship team practice. The sheer amount of commitment and love she had for music is one of the reasons I want to be a teacher. I think the dedication she has to her career is the kind of passion I want to have. I also admire her creativity in her lessons and the way she wants to try new things with her students,” Valadez said.

Sara Behrends eventually became Valadez’s elementary music teacher. Her father, Aaron Behrends, taught her in middle and high school.

“My parents gave me such a strong foundation in music,” she said. “They encouraged me, supported me, and gave me the confidence to pursue this path. I feel like I’m carrying on a family tradition, and that fills me with pride.”

Her future goals are closely tied to her experience as a high school student.

“I want to be the kind of teacher that makes kids want to show up every day,” Valadez said. “I hope my classroom is a safe, calm space where students can leave their problems behind and just make music.”

She envisions herself teaching high school choir, but feels prepared for any age group or setting.

“At CSC, I got to do so much, try different instruments, join various ensembles, and take diverse lessons,” she said. “That flexibility will make me a better teacher, and I hope it encourages my future students to try new things, too.”

As she prepares for the next chapter, Valadez is filled with gratitude.

“CSC has been a wonderful place to learn, and I’m sad to leave,” she said. “But I’m thankful for everything, the professors, the experiences, and especially my family, who showed me how powerful music can be.”

 </figure>CHADRON – Music has always been more than notes on a page to Olivia Valadez. Music has been a lifelong connection to family, a source of personal strength, and now, a path to a career for Valadez who is helping others find their own voice.Valadez, a Chadron State College music education major from Alliance, is scheduled to graduate in December after completing her student teaching in Bridgeport this fall. She plans to offer private lessons and substitute teach while searching for a full-time teaching position.Her decision to become a music educator was inspired not only by a deep love of music, but also by the support and compassion she received during a difficult time in high school.“There was a teacher in 10th grade who saw that I was struggling,” Valadez said. “She walked with me when I felt most alone. It wasn’t a grand gesture, but it changed everything. I knew then that I wanted to be a teacher, someone who helps others feel seen.”Valadez’s passion for teaching blossomed during her time at CSC. While she developed a strong foundation in theory, composition, and performance, it was the practicum and methods courses that had the most significant impact.“The most valuable thing I’ve learned at CSC is how to teach music,” she said. “I’ve gained so much from my classes and performances, but learning how to guide others through music is what I’ll carry into my career.”Although she originally planned to focus on piano, Valadez credits Dr. Joel Schreuder with opening her up to vocal performance.“I didn’t want anything to do with singing,” she said. “But I joined vocal jazz, changed my instrument to voice, and found a new way to express myself.”She also praised Dr. Michael Stephens, noting his energy and dedication made music theory engaging and jazz band rehearsals enjoyable.“There are so many great professors here,” she said. “They challenge you, support you, and give you opportunities to grow.”One standout experience was performing a composition entitled Mass by Steve Dobrogosz in Kearney, Nebraska, in 2023 with other college choirs, a high school choir, and a chamber orchestra.“It was incredible,” she said. “The sound, the people, the music — it was some of the most fun I’ve ever had performing.”Valadez’s journey is also rooted in family. Her grandmother, Dr. Peggy Marshall, a retired CSC Education professor, passed on her musical passion to Valadez’s mother, Sara Behrends.“My grandma is a huge advocate for music, which has rubbed off on me. My mom surrounded me with music growing up. She was always singing, playing piano, or planning her next lesson or worship team practice. The sheer amount of commitment and love she had for music is one of the reasons I want to be a teacher. I think the dedication she has to her career is the kind of passion I want to have. I also admire her creativity in her lessons and the way she wants to try new things with her students,” Valadez said.Sara Behrends eventually became Valadez’s elementary music teacher. Her father, Aaron Behrends, taught her in middle and high school.“My parents gave me such a strong foundation in music,” she said. “They encouraged me, supported me, and gave me the confidence to pursue this path. I feel like I’m carrying on a family tradition, and that fills me with pride.”Her future goals are closely tied to her experience as a high school student.“I want to be the kind of teacher that makes kids want to show up every day,” Valadez said. “I hope my classroom is a safe, calm space where students can leave their problems behind and just make music.”She envisions herself teaching high school choir, but feels prepared for any age group or setting.“At CSC, I got to do so much, try different instruments, join various ensembles, and take diverse lessons,” she said. “That flexibility will make me a better teacher, and I hope it encourages my future students to try new things, too.”As she prepares for the next chapter, Valadez is filled with gratitude.“CSC has been a wonderful place to learn, and I’m sad to leave,” she said. “But I’m thankful for everything, the professors, the experiences, and especially my family, who showed me how powerful music can be.”

ALLIANCE, Nebraska - The Alliance Creative District is announcing the first Carhenge Mural Festival on the third week of June, 2025. Eight muralists from around the world will bring their unique perspective to help transform one of the world’s quirkiest roadside attractions into an art instillation like no other.

Carhenge is a scale reproduction of the ancient monument Stonehenge made entirely of vintage American cars. Starting on June 17th, an all-star lineup of artists will each paint one of those cars and bring their unique vision to the attraction. On the Summer Solstice, June 21,&nbsp;there will be an no cost-admission, artists’ reception at Carhenge with live music at sunset.

The artists will teach workshops on June 18, 19, and 20 covering both studio work and large scale public art. There will be a Bands on the Bricks music performance in Downtown Alliance at 7pm on June 19th and a ticketed Artists’ Dinner will be held on June 20th at the Golden Hour Barbecue for a chance to chat our international group of artists.

How do low-income families ever afford a house? With mortgage interest rates around 7% (with good credit history) and a 20% down payment, it's difficult for any first-time homeowner to buy. The cost of rent has skyrocketed in recent years, and renting does not provide the stability people get when they buy a house of their own.

Habitat for Humanity believes that everyone should have an affordable place to call home. They also believe that when a family owns a house, they are building a better life for themselves, and they are building a stronger community.

I recently met with Harold Roller, president of the Alliance branch of Habitat for Humanity. The Alliance branch was formed in 2005. Since that time, they have built four houses from the ground up. They have also gutted and remodeled an additional four houses for homes in our community.

The first houses built by the Alliance Habitat branch cost $75,000. Now Roller estimates that the cost is $140,000. Habitat will carry a 30-year mortgage at 0% interest for the family that is chosen to receive a house. They make monthly payments on their loans, with part going into tax and insurance escrow and the remainder toward the principal. This works the same as a mortgage from a bank, except that there is no interest, the largest portion of a mortgage payment on a new bank loan.

Habitat homeowners give the local branch first buyback options if they can no longer remain in the house until the end of the mortgage period. This prevents homeowners from taking advantage of the original low cost and selling the house at a substantial profit.

When the local branch has enough assets from loan repayments, they begin to accept new applications. Applicants must be low income, earning less than 50% of the median income for our area. They must have a job and have a good credit history. Each application is evaluated by the board of eight, who determine which one household is most deserving. The paperwork is completed, and the building project begins!

Roller stressed that Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. Habitat’s homeowner families buy the houses that Habitat builds or renovates. Habitat homeowners are required to invest at least 400 hours of their own labor working alongside volunteers. Their sweat equity brings down the cost of the building.

Another great cost saving comes from the Whirlpool Corporation. Whirlpool donates appliances for Habitat houses. At this time that means the household receives a new stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, microwave, washer and dryer. Schneider Electric donates electric equipment like panels and circuit breakers for Habitat houses throughout the United States. Many states and communities have additional businesses that give generous donations of materials or money to support the idea of affordable housing.

Habitat for Humanity was started in 1976 in Georgia by Millard and Linda Fuller. It is an independent, nonprofit, ecumenical Christian housing ministry. As a long-time volunteer, former President Jimmy Carter brought a lot of publicity to Habitat, which helped the program grow throughout the nation.

Habitat is funded by donations, not by the government. However, the Alliance Habitat group does ask the City of Alliance to donate a vacant lot when they are ready to begin a new project.

NORTH PLATTE, Neb - The thunder of hooves and history returns to Nebraska this month as the 2025 Pony Express National Re-Ride makes its way across the state June 18–20, retracing one of the most storied mail routes in American history.

The annual 1,966-mile reenactment began in St. Joseph, Missouri, and will continue around the clock until reaching Sacramento, California. Riders carry a mochila—an iconic leather mail pouch—on horseback across eight states, passing through historic towns and landmarks just as riders did in 1860 and 1861.

In Nebraska, the ride kicks off Wednesday, June 18, at Lyman with a ceremonial handoff from Wyoming. Riders will gallop through key heritage stops including Scottsbluff National Monument, Chimney Rock, and on into central Nebraska.

Locally, the route will include events in Ogallala at Tri-Trails Park around 8:30 a.m. on June 19, celebrating the area's rich pioneer legacy tied to the Pony Express, Oregon Trail, and Texas Trail. Later, the riders will pass near North Platte and that evening, riders will pass south of Gothenburg near Midway Ranch—an important nighttime relay stop—and continue eastward toward Fort Kearny.

The original Pony Express operated only briefly—from April 1860 to October 1861—but its impact was lasting. Riders braved the elements to carry mail between Missouri and California in just 10 days, bridging vast distances before the transcontinental telegraph.

For communities like North Platte, once a vital hub on the Overland Trail and later the Union Pacific Railroad, the Pony Express symbolizes both frontier resilience and the foundations of modern communication.

This year’s ride offers a living history experience and a moment to honor the grit and courage of the young riders who helped shape the American West.

A proud Alliance native, she brings a robust background in marketing, business development, and community engagement from previous roles in Laramie, Wyoming, Kearney, and Los Angeles. These experiences honed her skills in proposal strategy, communications, and stakeholder collaboration, which she now applies to benefit rural Nebraska.

Hannah is deeply involved in local initiatives to address critical economic development challenges. She spearheads BBDC’s Rural Workforce Housing Fund and the Communities for Kids initiative, which significantly reduced Box Butte County's childcare gap by nearly 65%. She also serves on the board of directors for the Alliance Recreation Center. She holds a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Wyoming. In her free time, she enjoys happy hour, traveling, tackling home projects with her husband Clint, and walking her Boston Terrier and French Bulldog.

Leadership Nebraska selects local leader Hannah Robinson for Class XVII

Alliance, NE – To help improve the conditions of our streets and sidewalks, the City of Alliance has partnered with StreetScan. StreetScan is a Massachusetts-based company that has assessed streets in over 400 communities in North America.

For the sidewalks, StreetScan employs scooter-mounted sensing technologies to assess the sidewalk conditions. The systems determine the health of each sidewalk and identify defects, including surface distortions and cracking. Sidewalk scanning will begin on Tuesday, June 17th, 2025.

For the streets, StreetScan employs vehicle-mounted sensing technology to assess road conditions in normal traffic flow. StreetScan collects LiDAR/imagery data and utilizes 360° imaging technology to measure road defects, such as cracking, bumps, and potholes. Street scanning will begin on Thursday, June 19th, 2025.

With the help of StreetScan, collecting this data helps the municipality to identify and prioritize repair needs.

StreetScan to assess road, sidewalk conditions around Alliance

CHADRON – Dr. Josh Ellis, professor in Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS), recently earned the Certified Special Populations Specialist (CSPS) certification from the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA).

Since joining the FCS faculty in 2014, Ellis has hosted a number of innovative programs such as the Death Café and Weight of the Nation which featured interactive sessions. In 2022, he earned CSC’s Teaching Excellence Award.

According to the CSPS website, certified specialists bridge the gap between fitness and healthcare by designing safe, individualized exercise programs that enhance recovery and quality of life.

Ellis said when an individual facing chronic or temporary health conditions has been cleared by his or her physician to engage in physical activity, an NSCA CSPS specialist is qualified to work with them. The conditions could include a wide range of physical, psychological, cognitive challenges, neuromuscular disorders, and cardiovascular, pulmonary, metabolic, and age-related issues.

Ellis said that one of the insights he gained from studying for the certification was realizing the importance of meeting people where they are in their journey towards better health and working with them to develop a roadmap that will help them reach their desired goals.

“It is important not to apply a cookie-cutter approach to those we train, as everyone is different, has different goals as to what they want or hope to be able to accomplish in life through physical training. ‘Improvement’ is relative to the individual, and you need to ensure they develop self-efficacy, confidence, and consistency,” Ellis said.

He would like to eventually arrange for CSC students to work with populations of varied ages, especially the elderly. Not only for the experience, but also to expose them to career paths they may not have yet considered.

Some professions listed on the CSPS website include adaptive fitness trainer, inclusive fitness specialist, special populations personal trainer, clinical exercise physiologist, exercise specialist, post-rehabilitation specialist, health and wellness coach, lifestyle coach, senior fitness specialist, active aging director, or therapeutic exercise specialist.

Ellis said he decided to pursue the certification because the skills and knowledge required to attain it were of professional and personal interest to him and would be valuable additions to the courses he teaches.

Studying for the certification exam took approximately six months and was more difficult than he anticipated.

“If I hadn't had my background in athletic training to rely on, I don't think I would have passed the exam. The exam has a 56 percent pass rate,” Ellis said.

As of December 2024, 208 professionals have earned the CSPS credential.&nbsp;
